00:07 It has stood the test of time.
00:12 God's Book, the Bible. 00:17 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:22 It Is Written, sharing hope around the globe. 00:36 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 00:38 I'm John Bradshaw, great to have you with me. 00:41 In the small town where I grew up there was a jeweler's 00:44 shop, it was the place where you could buy a gift or jewelry 00:46 or the place you went to get your clock 00:49 or your watch fixed - and at the jeweler's shop 00:52 they sold watches. 00:53 There was always a display of watches in the store window - 00:55 nice watches. 00:57 Expensive watches - especially when you're a kid 01:00 of 10 or 11 year-old kid. 01:02 Many times I looked through the window of that store 01:04 and dreamed about owning one of those beautiful, grown-up 01:06 watches. 01:08 At about that same time I had a job as a paperboy. 01:11 I'd load my bicycle with papers and ride around town 01:14 for an hour or so 6 days a week delivering between 50 and 60 01:18 newspapers - all for the princely sum of 6 and 7 01:21 dollars a week. 01:23 Just before 6 o'clock in the morning Mr. Pharo 01:24 would open up his newsstand and we'd go to work. 01:28 Early one morning as I rode along Jesmond Street with 01:32 some time to spare before Mr. 01:33 Pharo opened up I rode by that jeweler's store window. 01:38 And you'd never believe it - there was a hole smashed in 01:42 the shop window in the watch display, and someone had 01:45 stolen some of the watches! 01:47 But most of them were still there. 01:50 There was no alarm so nobody was alerted. 01:53 The street was dead quiet, not a soul anywhere to be 01:56 seen - and a boy of 11 or 12 years old stood inches from 02:01 the very watches he had long admired and long wanted 02:05 to have. 02:08 I looked around, and there was nobody. 02:11 And something said, "Take one. 02:15 This is your big chance. 02:17 Nobody will ever know!" 02:19 And you know what I did? 02:20 I actually put my hand through the hole in that 02:23 window to show myself that I really could take one 02:26 of those watches if I wanted to. 02:27 And a wrestling match began - me versus temptation. 02:33 Temptation. 02:37 It's a powerful thing. 02:40 The dictionary I looked at defined temptation 02:42 as "something that tempts, entices or allures." 02:46 And we're all challenged by temptation 02:48 - on a daily basis. 02:51 And when it overtakes you the results can be devastating. 02:54 For so many people, temptation leads to absolute 02:57 ruin, and defeat, and shame, and loss, and disgrace, 03:00 and pain. 03:01 So what do you do when you're confronted by temptation? 03:06 Irish writer Oscar Wilde famously said, "I can resist 03:10 everything except temptation." 03:13 Screen siren Mae West said, "I generally avoid temptation 03:16 unless I can't resist it." 03:19 And that's cute, I guess, except that 03:21 temptation's no joke. 03:23 Temptation is Satan's way of trying to break us down, 03:26 to get us away from the will of God - because he knows that 03:28 if he can do that, he's got us, and we MAY 03:32 be LOST eternally. 03:35 Temptation comes in all shapes and sizes. 03:38 For some people, it's chocolate or M & Ms 03:40 or hamburgers. 03:41 For others, alcohol or drugs or cigarettes. 03:45 Some are tempted by anger, others by lust, some are 03:48 tempted to steal, tempted by pride, tempted to call 03:50 in sick or tempted to stay out all night or to waste money. 03:54 I imagine you can easily think of what tempts you 03:58 most. 03:59 But I'd like you to keep something in mind today. 04:02 Temptation and sin are two different things. 04:06 You don't want to think that being tempted makes you 04:09 guilty of committing sin. 04:11 When someone cuts you off in traffic and the impulse rises 04:13 to shake your fist and shout something inappropriate, 04:17 that's not sin. 04:18 That's temptation. 04:19 When you see an attractive person and something within 04:22 you suggests you take a lingering second look, that's 04:26 not "sin" either - that's TEMPTATION. 04:30 But you can see how temptation is so dangerous. 04:32 All it takes is yielding, and you're caught in its trap. 04:37 Here's what the Bible says in James 1:14 & 15. 04:44 The Bible says, But each one is tempted when he is drawn 04:47 away by his own desires and enticed. 04:50 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; 04:53 and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 04:59 James 1:14, 15 NKJV Nobody ever sinned 05:02 without first being tempted. 05:04 Which means if the person who sinned had known how to deal 05:08 with temptation - the sin would never had happened. 05:11 You know how it goes - "I know I shouldn't but it won't hurt 05:14 me to stop into that casino just once..." - 05:18 and that one decision can end in disaster. 05:21 "Hmmm, I know I probably shouldn't but why don't 05:23 I message that old boyfriend of mine on Facebook. 05:26 I'll just say hi. 05:27 Nothing more than that." 05:29 Two years later the house has been sold and visitation 05:32 rights are being worked out. 05:33 Temptation draws us, it plays on our desires, it entices us. 05:38 Temptation stalks us. 05:40 Peter wrote that Satan walks about as a roaring lion 05:44 seeking who he can devour. 05:45 That's how dangerous temptation is. 05:48 It separates us from the will of God - it separates us from 05:51 righteousness and holiness, that is, IF WE LET IT. 05:56 So what do you do when you're tempted? 05:59 How can you overcome temptation? 06:01 Today, let's look at examples of people in the Bible who 06:05 were tempted, at what God says about temptation, and see 06:09 if we can figure out how to experience victory and not 06:12 defeat when temptation comes. 06:14 Oh - and what did I do when I was a young boy tempted to 06:18 steal a beautiful new watch? 06:19 I'll tell you in just a moment. 06:23 In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God says "It is written 'Man 06:27 shall not live by bread alone but by every word that 06:30 proceeds out of the mouth of God'." Every Word is a one 06:34 minute Bible-based daily devotional presented by Pastor 06:37 John Bradshaw and designed especially for busy 06:40 people like you. 06:41 Look for Every Word on selected networks or watch it 06:44 on-line everyday on our website itiswritten.com. 06:49 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 06:51 Watch Every Word. 06:52 You'll be glad you did. 06:53 Here's a sample 07:04 What a great example Jacob gave us. 07:06 He'd made plenty of mistakes but late one night he wrestled 07:09 with God and said to God in Genesis 32:26, 07:12 "I will not let you go unless you bless me." 07:14 Now there's the right attitude. 07:16 "Lord, I must have your blessing and I'm going to hang on 07:19 to you until I get it." 07:21 You can pray that way: "Lord, I must be delivered, 07:24 I have to know your will, I have to have your power 07:26 in my life." 07:27 Jacob showed us what to do when you fall. 07:29 Instead of running FROM God he ran TO God. 07:33 Instead of giving up he took hold of God believing that God 07:36 was willing and able to bless. 07:37 Don't let your falls and failures keep you 07:41 away from God. 07:42 Be like Jacob - knowing he had made mistakes he took hold 07:45 of God, and wouldn't let go until God 07:47 had blessed him. 07:49 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 07:50 Let's live today by Every Word. 07:59 Planning for your financial future is a vital aspect 08:01 of Christian stewardship. 08:02 For this reason, It Is Written is pleased 08:05 to offer free planned giving and estate services. 08:08 For information on how we can help you, 08:10 please call 1.800.992.2219. 08:14 To receive additional material on the advantages 08:17 of life-income plans, such as a charitable 08:20 gift annuity, which could provide you 08:22 with tax benefits and income for life, 08:25 call today or visit our special website 08:27 www.hislegacy.com. 08:31 You can also write to: It Is Written 08:33 Planned Giving and Trust Services Box O 08:36 Thousand Oaks, CA 91359 08:39 Our toll-free number again 1.800.992.2219 and our web 08:44 address www.hislegacy.com. 08:54 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 08:56 Today we're talking about something that's a fact 08:57 of our daily lives, something that brings destruction 09:01 to lives, ruin to homes and chaos to marriages. 09:05 Temptation. 09:07 Well - it isn't the temptation itself that ruins 09:09 lives and homes and marriages, but the way we often 09:12 respond to it. 09:13 So, how should we respond to temptation? 09:17 I mentioned a few minutes ago that when I was a boy I had 09:19 a golden opportunity to steal a beautiful watch. 09:22 That temptation was "strong" - in the end, I couldn't 09:27 bring myself to take it. 09:29 I knew it was wrong, and besides - how would I explain 09:33 to my father where this beautiful new watch had come 09:35 from, a watch that coincidentally would've 09:38 turned up on my wrist the day the jeweler's store was 09:40 burgled? 09:42 I got rode my bike across the street to Mr. Pharo's store 09:45 and he called the police and that was that. 09:48 Now I wish I could say I always dealt 09:50 with temptation like that. 09:52 But that's not always the case. 09:54 Think of how temptation works in the lives of people and 09:57 how it so often brings people to do completely 09:59 irrational things. 10:01 Temptation leads people to become slaves to 10:03 the substances that tempt them. 10:05 Temptation can be tough stuff. 10:11 But you know that before this program is over, I'm going 10:13 to share with you some key tools that are temptation busters - 10:18 some tools that will help you get over temptation, tools 10:20 that will help you find strength in the moment 10:23 of temptation. 10:25 Temptation doesn't have to ruin your life. 10:28 One thing about temptation is that it's everywhere these 10:31 days. 10:32 Once up on a time there were certain sins you had to go 10:34 out looking for, but now you can pull them up on your 10:38 computer screen without even leaving your house - nobody 10:41 knows. 10:43 And society seems to encourage sin like never 10:46 before. 10:47 Have what you want. 10:48 Have "who" you want. 10:49 Bad behavior is often rewarded with celebrity 10:52 and fame. 10:53 Sin is applauded. 10:55 I saw a billboard advertising a nightclub and the billboard 10:58 said, "Just the right amount of wrong." Sin is cool. 11:02 Temptation's everywhere. 11:06 So what do you do? 11:08 Let's look at some case studies. 11:09 Come with me all the way back to the beginning. 11:13 Adam and Eve had been placed into the Garden of Eden 11:15 by a loving God. 11:17 As long as they obeyed God, the enemy couldn't harm them. 11:20 But Satan knew that if they yielded to temptation 11:24 it would corrupt them and cause separation between them 11:26 and God. 11:27 Now Satan couldn't FORCE Adam and Eve to sin, but he could 11:31 TEMPT them. 11:34 He could allure them, he could entice them. 11:38 He could cloak sin in a covering that would make it seem 11:39 too good to refuse. 11:41 So while Eve was in the Garden of Eden, Satan spoke to her. 11:44 Using a beautiful snake as a medium - and remember, 11:47 this was way back then, before people were afraid of snakes 11:51 - Satan said this ...we look in Geneses 3, "Has God indeed 11:57 said, You shall not eat of every tree of the Garden?" 12:02 Remember - God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit 12:04 that grew on the tree of the knowledge of good 12:06 and evil. 12:07 And they could only be happy as they stayed in harmony 12:09 with God. 12:10 And now - they're being tempted. 12:14 Eve made a crucial mistake: she lingered, instead 12:18 of fleeing temptation. 12:21 And curious, she engaged the devil in a discussion. 12:26 And she said to the serpent in Genesis 3:2 and 3, We may 12:31 eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit 12:34 of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, 12:36 God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, 12:40 lest you die. 12:43 Genesis 3:2, 3 NKJV So Eve knew the score. 12:45 She knew God's will and she knew what was at stake. 12:50 And that's when the devil upped the ante. 12:52 Verses 4 through 6. 12:53 He said to Eve, You will not surely die. 12:55 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will 12:58 be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good 13:00 and evil." So when the woman saw that the tree was good 13:03 for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree 13:08 desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit 13:12 and ate. 13:13 She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 13:17 Genesis 3:4-6 NKJV And that was that. 13:25 They ate - and sin came into the world, with all 13:28 its attendant misery. 13:30 And its easy to criticize them for eating the fruit - 13:32 I mean, a talking snake?! 13:35 And it's easy to criticize them for eating the fruit. 13:39 I mean, a talking snake! 13:40 What Eve SHOULD have done seems obvious. 13:42 But it can't be that simple or you and I would do it all 13:43 the time and we'd never fall into sin. 13:45 What should Eve have done? 13:46 First, she should have called to God. 13:48 Second, she should not have lingered in the presence 13:51 of temptation. 13:53 Eve allowed herself to be "beguiled" as Paul writes 13:57 later in the Bible - enchanted, or tricked. 14:01 Now some lessons for us. 14:02 When temptation comes, call on God, right away. 14:05 Pray! 14:07 And, don't linger don't hang around it. 14:10 When the enemy comes calling, close the avenue 14:13 of communication. 14:14 If it's something on a computer or a TV, pray and turn it off. 14:19 If it's a person driving you nuts, pray and if possible, 14:22 get out of there. 14:23 Eve hung around the temptation when she should 14:25 have fled the temptation. 14:28 And we're still paying the price for her indiscretion 14:31 today. 14:32 I think we both know temptation is a powerful 14:35 thing. 14:37 An image on a billboard, a drink in a glass, 14:40 an attractive face or the chance to get easy money - powerful 14:44 temptations, for all kinds of reasons. 14:48 In a moment, we'll look at two people and how they 14:52 reacted - very differently - to temptation when it came. 14:56 And I am going to give you three tools for beating 14:59 temptation? 15:00 We'll have them next. 15:02 [Music] 15:10 Eyes for India is giving sight to the blind and you can be 15:14 a part of this amazing work that God is doing. 15:17 Fifteen million blind people live in India, 15:20 more than any other country in the world. 15:22 And many of the blind in India could see again, 15:24 if only they could have simple cataract surgery. 15:28 It Is Written is making that happen! 15:31 Would you support Eyes for India? 15:34 For just $75, you4ll be giving the gift of sight to someone 15:38 who desperately wants to see. 15:41 Here is all you need to do. 15:42 Call 1.800.253.3000. 15:46 That4s 1.800.253.3000 to donate and support Eyes 15:51 for India or you can write to It Is Written, Box O, 15:56 Thousand Oaks, California, 91359. 16:00 You4ll also find Eyes for India online at 16:02 itiswritten.com. 16:04 Every $75 you give gives someone the precious gift 16:08 of sight. 16:09 Eyes for India, doing the work of Jesus 16:12 in opening the eyes of the blind in opening hears to the love 16:16 of God. 16:18 Call 1.800.253.3000 or write to Box O, 16:22 Thousand Oaks, California, 91359 or visit itiswritten.com. 16:32 I'm John Bradshaw. 16:33 Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 16:35 In a few minutes I'm going to offer you a free resource to 16:38 help you deal with temptation. 16:40 I hope you'll get that information so I can send 16:42 this free resource to you. 16:44 Right now, let's look at two people who were faced with 16:46 the same temptation, and who handled it very differently. 16:51 One, successfully, and the other, disastrously. 16:55 In 2 Samuel 11 you read these words: Then it happened one 17:06 evening that David arose from his bed and walked on 17:08 the roof of the king's house. 17:10 And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman 17:13 was very beautiful to behold. 17:16 2 Samuel 11:2 NKJV Now let me ask you - has David done 17:20 anything wrong here? 17:22 Anything sinful? 17:23 Anything immoral? 17:24 The answer is, No he hasn't. 17:25 He's out walking one evening - no sin there - and he sees 17:27 a beautiful woman. 17:28 Maybe he couldn't help that. 17:30 But something takes place here. 17:32 He's tempted. 17:33 He has seen something he likes - frankly, 17:36 it's something he was created to appreciate - in the right 17:39 context, of course. 17:41 And when something within David said to him, "This 17:44 is good!" David didn't react in the way he should have. 17:49 He was tempted. 17:50 But then he started to imagine what it would 17:53 be like to... 17:55 get to know this woman better. 17:58 As James wrote, "he was drawn away of his own lusts, 18:01 and enticed." The Bible says that David sent and inquired 18:06 about the woman. 18:11 Now, let me ask you: anything wrong with that? 18:15 Was inquiring about the woman contravening any societal 18:17 conventions? 18:19 Strictly speaking, No! 18:20 Nothing wrong with asking who a person was. 18:22 You do it. 18:25 But what was David really doing? 18:27 He was opening the door to temptation, wasn't he? 18:30 Now he was on dangerous ground. 18:34 We read this in 2 Samuel 11, And someone said, Is this not 18:37 Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah 18:40 the Hittite? 18:42 2 Samuel 11:3 NKJV No, David, don't do it. 18:45 You're already married, she's married, 18:49 this just isn't necessary. 18:50 Put the idea out of your mind. 18:52 Pray, go back to your room, read a good book... 18:57 This isn't going to lead to anything good. 19:00 Verse 4 says, Then David sent messengers, and took her; 19:04 and she came to him. 19:06 2 Samuel 11:4 NKJV ... 19:07 and... so on. 19:10 By the time this thing was over, David had committed a litany 19:12 of terrible sins - adultery, dishonesty, 19:15 murder... 19:17 Judgment came swiftly. 19:19 What a mess. 19:20 But if he had handled that temptation better, it would 19:23 have all been different. 19:25 What should David have done? 19:27 To find that out, look at someone who found himself 19:30 in a similar situation. 19:32 Joseph had been unjustly sold as a slave to Egypt. 19:36 He might have been tempted to think that God 19:38 had forsaken him. 19:40 The man who purchased him made Joseph the ruler over 19:43 his entire household. 19:44 The man's wife decides that this handsome young man 19:47 (as the Bible describes him) is her cup of tea, and she acts 19:51 on her desires. 19:54 Genesis 39:7, the Bible says this, His master's wife cast 20:02 her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. 20:06 Genesis 39:7 KJV Temptation? 20:10 (Nodding...) I'm not trying to say Joseph welcomed it, 20:14 but it was certainly a temptation for him. 20:17 So what did he do? 20:19 But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my 20:23 master does not know what is with me in the house, and he 20:31 in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me 20:34 but you, because you are his wife. 20:39 Genesis 38:8-9 NKJV Joseph was moved by a sense 20:41 of right, and a sense of duty and loyalty. 20:45 He was governed by principle rather than desire. 20:48 He said to the temptress, "How then can I do this great 20:51 wickedness, and sin against God?" Genesis 39:9 Moved 20:57 by honor for God, Joseph wouldn't cave in 21:00 to the temptation. 21:02 So the woman started coming on to Joseph every day. 21:05 And he "still" didn't cave. 21:07 Joseph made God's desires more important than his own. 21:11 In the short term he paid a terrible price. 21:13 But God says, "Them that honor me I will honor." And Joseph 21:17 became second only to Pharaoh in the greatest kingdom 21:20 in the world. 21:23 Temptation didn't have to bring down David, but it did. 21:26 When the door of temptation right there before him, 21:31 he walked clear through. 21:33 Joseph, on the other hand, slammed the door shut. 21:36 Joseph decided ahead of time that by God's grace he would 21:39 honor God in what He did. 21:41 And God honored him for that. 21:43 Alright now - let me give you three Cs for dealing 21:48 with temptation. 21:49 And I'm telling you, his can revolutionize your life. 21:53 1 - Call on God. 21:57 That means pray. 21:58 Eve evidently didn't do that. 22:00 Neither did David. 22:01 In the midst of their temptation, if they had 22:03 called on God and asked for guidance and strength, 22:05 things would have turned out a lot different. 22:08 It's mighty hard to pray and sin at the same time. 22:10 And C, No. 2 - Trust Completely. 22:16 James said this in James 4:7. 22:18 Therefore submit to God. 22:25 Resist the devil and he will flee from you (NKJV). 22:30 See, what that means is that God has said you can be victorious. 22:33 You don't have to fall. 22:35 This idea, this "I guess I'm just too weak...You might 22:38 be, but God is strong. 22:43 He can keep you. 22:44 If you resist the devil while submitting to God, the devil 22:48 will flee. 22:50 God said so. 22:52 How do I know that? 22:52 Because God has said so. 22:55 And C, No. 3 - Claim God's Promises. 22:59 Here's a powerful verse. 23:02 1 Corinthians 10:13, here's what the Bible says, 23:08 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to 23:11 man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted 23:16 beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will 23:19 also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 23:27 Gather up the promises of God, so that when you're 23:29 tempted by impurity you can say, Blessed are the pure 23:32 in heart, for they shall see God. 23:35 Matthew 5:8 NKJV. 23:37 Or, you might say, I will set nothing wicked 23:40 before my eyes. 23:41 Psalm 101:3 NKJV. 23:42 Or you could claim 2 Peter 2:9 whatever the temptation 23:46 is you find yourself beset by, 2 Peter 2:9, The Lord 23:53 knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations. 23:57 That's what the Bible says in 2 Peter 2:9 NKJV 24:01 You don't have to fall when temptation comes. 24:04 No, I'm not suggesting this is easy. 24:06 It is simple - but not always easy. 24:08 Temptation can be a struggle, but if you'll take it to God 24:12 every time, you can know that God will deliver you. 24:17 Remember that line in the Lord's Prayer? 24:19 "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." 24:21 It's real. 24:23 God will deliver you. 24:25 Remember those Three C's, C #1, Call on God, 24:29 C#2, Trust Completely in God, and C#3, Claim God's promises. 24:38 God will give you victory. 24:40 This can revolutionize your life. 24:43 You know, a big key to being victorious in the face 24:45 of temptation is relying on the word of God, especially 24:48 the promises of God. 24:50 I want to offer you something that will help you in your 24:52 battle with temptation. 24:53 It's a little book called, "God's Promises."
