00:56 You have to live for others. 00:57 That is what makes us humans. 01:02 >>Woman 2: We need to be kind 01:03 and be compassionate with people. 01:04 We need to help poor people, and we need to help each other. 01:11 >>Man 2: Dr. Jacob has the motivation from God only, 01:15 or all from his heart, that he should work for the poor, 01:20 needy and helpless people. 01:25 >>Dr. Prabhakar: I come from a very remote village, 01:26 from a very poor background. 01:29 When I was a child I received help 01:30 to become something in life. 01:32 If I can help these patients, 01:34 and give them the gift of sight and give them the ray of hope, 01:38 it changes their life all over again. 01:40 ♪[Music]♪ 01:50 ♪[Music]♪ 01:59 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 02:01 I'm John Bradshaw. 02:02 Thanks for joining me in India. 02:05 ♪[Uplifting music]♪ 02:19 The world is full of bad news. 02:21 There's terrorism and tragedy and difficulty 02:24 and hardship and want and crime and violence, 02:26 and we're familiar with it all. 02:29 But at the same time, 02:31 it shouldn't be forgotten that there's 02:33 an awful lot of good taking place in this world. 02:36 And it's in times of tragedy and need that human beings 02:40 press together to help those who most need help. 02:44 ♪[Music]♪ 02:47 In Jalandhar, India, a dedicated physician 02:50 is working to alleviate the challenges faced 02:53 by some of India's 15 million blind people. 02:57 Every year he performs cataract surgery 02:59 on the visually impaired, many of whom simply cannot see. 03:05 This simple procedure means that people 03:07 are literally given their sight. 03:11 >>Dr. Prabhakar: India is home to 15 million blind people. 03:14 Most of it is due to cataracts. 03:16 And most of it is preventable or treatable. 03:20 Most of these people are living in the rural communities, 03:23 where there is very minimal access to healthcare. 03:27 Most of the patients think blindness is part of life 03:29 and so they live and die with blindness. 03:34 When they have bilateral blindness, 03:36 the people cannot earn. 03:39 They cannot live a normal life. 03:41 They are unable to take care of their own families. 03:45 >>Aatma Singh: [speaking Hindi] 03:55 >>Aatma Singh: [speaking Hindi] 04:09 >>Divison Sangma: Because they're so needy they can't see. 04:12 Because they are so poor, they can't afford money 04:15 and they don't have money to come to hospital. 04:19 MM: You know it's a basic right 04:21 when we talk of the constitution, 04:23 basic health, basic education. 04:25 We are born with this right. 04:27 Especially in India when you talk about 04:29 below poverty line people. 04:31 We are catering only to 30% of the problems. 04:34 Seventy percent of people still need basic health. 04:36 ♪[Music]♪ 04:45 >>Emmanuel Paul: The people here, they are not able to 04:47 afford to have the surgery. 04:49 That's why it's important here for Dr. Jacob 04:54 to get the surgery done. 04:57 >>Susan Kamson: Dr. Jacob, he is the fastest surgeon in India. 05:02 Other surgeons in one day, they will do only 30 or 40 surgeries. 05:05 He can do more than 300 to 400 surgeries per day. 05:13 >>Dr. Prabhakar: I personally have done 05:15 more than 120,000 surgeries. 05:17 In a year we do about ten to twelve thousand surgeries. 05:21 But we want to do more. 05:22 The need is so vast. 05:25 MM: I appreciate doctors who really go out of their way 05:29 to help people. 05:30 I mean, what's a life if you live only for yourself? 05:33 You have to live for others. 05:34 That is what makes us humans. 05:35 ♪[Music]♪ 05:46 >>John: So what do you do when 05:47 you're confronted by that kind of need? 05:50 You might be tempted to think 05:51 that you couldn't possibly make a difference. 05:54 You might be tempted to turn and look the other way. 05:56 Or maybe you could say, what would Jesus have done? 10:25 Jesus healed her. 10:27 He cast out demons. 10:28 Mark 3, verse 10, says, 10:30 “For He healed many, so that as many as had 10:33 afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him.” 10:36 Luke 4, verse 40, says, 10:39 “When the sun was setting, 10:41 all those who had any that were sick with various diseases 10:44 brought them to Him; 10:46 and He laid His hands on every one of them, and healed them.” 10:51 Luke 9:11 says Jesus 10:53 “healed those who had need of healing.” 10:56 He even healed people when He knew 10:58 that doing so would get Him into trouble. 11:02 The disciples healed in the time of the early Christian church. 11:05 Peter and John went down to the temple to pray, 11:07 and a lame man asked them for money. 11:10 They said, "We don't have any money." 11:12 “Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have, give I thee. 11:16 In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, 11:19 rise up and walk.” 11:21 And the man did. 11:22 He went walking and leaping and praising God. 11:25 You can understand why. 11:27 Acts 5:15 says, 11:30 “They brought the sick out into the streets 11:33 and laid them on beds and couches, 11:36 that at least the shadow of Peter passing by 11:39 might fall on some of them.” 11:42 Imagine that. 11:44 Healing the sick is incredibly important to God. 11:48 Now, you might say, oh, but I'm not a physician. 11:51 I can't treat those who are ill. 11:53 I certainly can't work miracles. 11:56 Ah, but you can. 11:58 You really can. 12:00 Here in India, there are people experiencing 12:03 the miracle of healing, made possible by people like you. 12:07 [people faintly speaking Hindi] 12:15 >>Mohinder Singh: [speaking Hindi] 12:25 >>Mohinder Singh: [speaking Hindi] 12:46 >>Dalbeirkaur Singh: [speaking Hindi] 12:56 >>Dalbeirkaur Singh: [speaking Hindi] 13:04 ♪[Music]♪ 13:11 ♪[Music]♪ 13:23 >>Dr. Prabhakar: I come from a very remote village 13:25 in the eastern part of India, 13:27 born in a family of eight siblings, 13:29 only one son, and I have seven beautiful sisters. 13:33 And my father and mother lived in this rural village 13:36 in a thatched home, nothing to look forward to. 13:40 I come from a village where there is no healthcare. 13:42 The entire area did not have any health facilities. 13:46 I remember the local doctor coming to my home, 13:51 when my sisters, my father and mother fell ill. 13:54 I used to see this doctor 13:57 who may have not been a qualified physician. 13:59 Since then I've had a desire, even before going to school. 14:03 I said that one day I must become a physician. 14:07 Our church pastor actually identified some potential 14:11 in this little fellow who could become something in life. 14:14 The pastor must have taken a lot of time to convince my parents 14:18 to let their only son to be taken to a boarding school. 14:23 ♪[Musica]♪ 14:27 >>John: After becoming an ophthalmologist, 14:29 Dr. Prabhakar dedicated his life to helping the blind in India. 14:33 But what motivates him? 14:36 >>Man 2: He has the motivation from God only, 14:39 or from his heart, 14:41 that he should work for the poor, needy, 14:44 and helpless people. 14:47 >>Dr. Prabhakar: Why not me if I can go to the villages, 14:49 pick up these children with blindness, 14:50 pick up the old people, all the mothers and fathers, 14:54 if I can help these patients and give them the ray of hope, 14:57 it changes their life all over again. 15:00 I think that's what Jesus did when He was on this earth. 15:04 He went to the people where they were. 15:06 He ministered unto them. 15:07 He touched their lives, and He said, 15:11 “Come and follow me.” 15:15 >>Woman 2: I'm so lucky to work with Dr. Jacob. 15:16 He is so much kind, humble, and he is so much caring, 15:21 and so much compassionate. 15:23 And he will be in the hospital working day and night 15:27 without having his meal. 15:31 As a Christian we need to help poor people 15:33 and we need to help each other. 15:35 As Christ says, we need to be kind 15:39 and be compassionate with the people. 15:41 ♪[Music]♪ 15:46 >>Man 2: God loves us if we love people. 15:52 If we love the people, then God loves us. 15:56 God is love. 15:58 That's why it's so very much a necessity 16:00 that we should help the human being. 16:04 ♪[Music]♪ 16:14 >>John: There's something in the human heart, 16:15 I believe in every human heart, that wants to respond to a need. 16:19 There's something about the human heart, 16:21 I believe placed there by God, that wants to step into the gap 16:25 and see people ministered to, to see the helpless helped, 16:28 the hopeless have hope, 16:29 to see those who are despairing relieved of their despair. 16:33 Imagine being able to give the gift of sight. 16:36 Would there be a greater gift 16:37 that a person could possibly give? 16:39 Well, you can give the gift of sight, 16:41 and I'll tell you how in just a moment. 16:44 ♪[Music]♪ 16:53 >>John: Thursday, August the fifth, 2010 16:56 was not a happy day for 33 men, 17:00 when a collapse in a mine in Chile 17:03 buried them 2,300 feet below ground. 17:08 No matter how much they tried to escape, 17:11 there was no way out. 17:12 Rescue would have to come from above. 17:17 On the outskirts of the San Jose Mine, 17:19 over two and a half thousand people gathered, 17:23 and with each failed rescue attempt, 17:25 despair increased, and families gathered together 17:29 to pray for a miracle. 17:33 From the Atacama Desert comes a story of tragedy, 17:37 a story of uncertainty, 17:39 yet a story of courage, 17:40 hope, and ultimately, a story of salvation. 17:44 Wait on the Lord, and the miracle will come. 17:49 >>Announcer: “Trapped.” 17:50 Watch now on itiswritten.tv. 17:53 >>Announcer: Have you ever wondered 17:54 if you're good enough to be saved? 19:42 The answer to that is obvious. 19:43 Yes, He does. 19:45 Now, we don't see miracles like that happen very often today. 19:49 Jesus isn't walking the earth in a literal sense 19:53 like He was 2,000 years ago. 19:56 But God does still heal. 20:00 And God does still work miracles. 20:04 Very often, He uses people to get the job done. 20:09 When that man called out to Jesus, 20:11 he made a very specific request: 20:13 “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” 20:19 If you were blind, 20:21 I expect that would be your prayer. 20:23 The man's prayer was answered. 20:26 Jesus said, “'Receive your sight; 20:29 your faith has made you well.' 20:32 And immediately he received his sight, 20:34 and followed Him, glorifying God. 20:37 And all the people, when they saw it, 20:40 gave praise to God.” 20:43 Now, can you imagine being used by God 20:47 to restore sight to someone who is visually impaired, 20:51 or to someone who is completely blind? 20:55 This is not merely hypothetical. 20:57 Now, turn that upside down. 20:59 Imagine that somebody wants to be able to see, 21:03 and the mechanism exists for them to be able to see again, 21:07 and yet nobody will connect the person 21:09 with the healing mechanism. 21:11 Let me say that again. 21:13 Imagine someone wants to be able to see, 21:15 and they can, but no one will help. 21:19 Now, that man called to Jesus, and he said, 21:21 “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” 21:24 And today there are people calling to me and to you, 21:26 and they're saying, 21:28 “That I may receive my sight. 24:04 Remember what God said through the prophet Isaiah 24:06 in Isaiah, chapter 58: 24:08 “Is not this the fast that I have chosen: 24:12 to loose the bonds of wickedness, 24:14 to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, 24:19 and that you break every yoke? 24:22 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, 24:25 and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; 24:29 when you see the naked, that you cover him, 24:33 and not hide yourself from your own flesh? 24:37 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, 24:41 your healing shall spring forth speedily, 24:44 and your righteousness shall go before you; 24:47 the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.” 24:51 Isaiah 58: 6-8. 24:54 >>Dr. Prabhakar: Once they remove the bandages, 24:56 the patients are so excited. 24:57 At one time you see excitement and joy in the lives 25:02 of these poor patients who have been blind 25:05 for so many, many years. 25:11 Eyes for India is making such a difference in the lives 25:13 of these poor people across India, 25:16 because they are able to live a life of their own. 25:20 They're able to go back to their workplaces. 25:21 They're able to earn and care for their families. 25:25 That makes a huge impact in their life. 25:29 I come from a very remote village, 25:31 from a very poor background. 25:32 Uh, and I see even now the poverty still continues, 25:38 in villages across India. 25:40 When I was a child, I received help from many, 25:43 many people, to become something in life. 25:46 Why not me, take this opportunity as a physician 25:50 to go and help people and elevate them from their, 25:54 of their suffering and woes, 25:56 and give them a ray of hope through my, 25:58 through my very own life. 26:00 ♪[Music]♪ 26:08 >>John: Thank you for making a difference, 26:10 and for giving the gift of sight. 26:13 Let me pray with you now. 26:14 Let's pray together. 26:15 Our Father in Heaven, 26:16 we thank You today for Jesus, 26:19 the Way, the Truth, and the Life. 26:23 We thank You that You've opened up our eyes 26:24 and the eyes of our heart, 26:26 that You've expressed to us that there is a God in Heaven 26:29 who loves the human family to the extent that He would allow 26:33 His Son Jesus to die that we might live. 26:36 We thank You for the example of Jesus, 26:38 who helped and intervened and healed and blessed. 26:42 Lord, allow us to be used in the same way. 26:46 Thank You, that through us You are changing lives in India, 26:51 through the miracle of modern surgery, 26:54 granting people their sight again. 26:59 Heavenly Father, 27:00 I pray that you would bless Dr. Jacob and his team. 27:03 I pray that many would have their eyes opened, 27:07 and that many more would come to know You as the God of Heaven, 27:10 and Jesus as the Savior of all humanity. 27:14 And thank You for those whom You are using 27:18 to make the gift of sight a reality in the lives of others. 27:23 Now bless us, Lord, please, and bless many that they might see, 27:28 and that they might see You. 27:29 In Jesus' name we pray, 27:32 Amen. 27:33 Thank you so much for joining me in India. 27:37 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 27:39 Until then, remember, 27:41 “It is written, 27:43 ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, 27:45 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'” 27:49 ♪[Theme music]♪ |
