00:22 Thanks for joining me.e. 00:24 I'in Moldova, a little country in Eastern Europe 00:27 sandwiched betweenRomania and Ukraine. 00:33 It's a quarter of t size has the population of of the state of Tennessee, the state of Connectcticut, 00:36 about ththree and a half million people. 00:39 ♪[Music]♪ 00:44 FoFor 50 years, Moldova was a Soviet socialistepublic. 00:49 It was under communist r rule as part of the Soviet Union. 00:53 But a remarkable thing happened, 00:55 the most significantnt political change of the 20th century. 00:59 And it affected the life of every pern here. 01:06 ♪[Music]♪ 01:21 ♪[Music]♪ 01:25 As far as Euroropean communism went, 01:27 the winds of c change really began to blow in the 1980s. 01:31 In Poland, the lidarity movement, 01:33 led by Lech Walesa, called for a serieies of strikes 01:36 which crippled that countntry's economy. 01:39 In Hungagary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany and Roman, 01:43 governments me under pressure to roll back 01:45 the oppressive restrictions of f communism. 01:48 In previous times, the Soviet Union's reonse 01:50 would have been swift and sesevere. 01:53 But this time ings would be different. 01:56 On November ththe tenth, 1989, the Bein Wall came down. 02:01 It was a serpente, 12-feet-tall, 02:04 100-mile-long barrier that separated d West Germany 02:07 from communist EasGermany. 02:10 st Germans celebrated, 02:12 and that falling domino set ofa chain reaction 02:16 that led to the dissolution of communism in Eastetern Europe. 02:19 And by the te the dust had settled, 02:22 the Soviet Union was no more. 02:26 But thstory many people haven't heard 02:28 is how the fall of communism had lessss to do with 02:31 Lech Walesa and protest and more to doith prayer. 02:38 In 1982, in the city of ipzig, 02:41 a Protestant pastor named Christian Fuhrer 02:43 begaholding Monday evening prayer meetings in his chuhurch, 02:47 St. Nicholas Church. 02:49 Pastor Fuhrer conducted those prayereetings 02:51 in spitef the East German government's strong oppositition 02:55 to religious activities.s. 02:57 So the goverernment pushed back, 02:59 saying they'd do whatever they had to to stop what had 03:03 morphed from simple prayer meeting to peacefuful protests. 03:07 But on October the 9th, 89, 03:10 eit thousand people gathered in the church, 03:13 and another seventy ousand people 03:15 mamassed in the streets outside. 03:18 In the end, the government let them protest. 03:22 The BBC later reported thahat East German officials said that they 03:26 were ready for athing at all, except candles and prayer. 03:32 ♪[Music]♪ 03:38 Exactly one month after that h historic night, 03:42 the wall came down. 03:44 And so too did a whole series of atheistic dictatorships. 03:48 ♪[Music]♪ 04:00 So whilehere were certainly other factors involved, 04:02 it can't bebe denied that prayer 04:04 play an incredibly important role in bringing about 04:08 inast Germany and throughout Eastern Europe 04:11 an incredible change, 04:13 which not long before would haveve been completely unimaginable. 04:18 So wt's the secret to effective prayer? 04:21 Can anyone learn toto pray effectively? 04:24 Or do you have tobe specially qualified 04:27 to get yr prayers answered? 04:29 ♪[Music]♪ 04:34 It seems to me a former Soviet s socialist republic 04:37 is a pretty good place to ask, 04:39 and then t to answer those questions. 04:43 So what is prayer? 04:45 A dictionary wilill tell you that prayer is a petition to, 04:48 or communion with, God or another object. 04:53 Now, for the purpose of this discussion, 04:55 we'll limit ourselves to the ideaea of praying to God. 04:58 Someone once saiaid that prayer is the opening up of the hea 05:02 to G God as to a friend. 05:05 Now, God has asked that we pray. 05:08 And He's promised that He'll answeour prayers. 05:12 Now, listen to this: i it's Second Chronicles 7, verse 14. 05:16 Solomon has just dedicated the temple to d. 05:19 It's in the tenth century B.C. 05:21 And God spoke to Solomon and saidhis: 05:25 “If My people, which are called by My name,e, 05:27 shall humble themselves, anand pray, and seek my face, 05:32 and turn from their wicked ways; 05:34 then will l I hear from heaven, and will forgive theirin, 05:38 and will heal their land.” 05:40 The Sovereign of the ununiverse says, 05:43 “I will answer your prayer” 05:46 And you noticece He makes it nice and simple. 05:49 There are very few conditions involved. 05:51 God simply says that if you come to m humbly, 05:54 and if y turn away from sin, 05:56 He will hear and answer yr prayers. 06:01 Now, o over in the New Testament, 06:02 we read this in First John,chapter 5, verses 14 and 15: 06:08 “Now this is e confidence that we have in Him, 06:11 that if we ask anything according to His will, 06:14 He hears us. 06:15 And d if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, 06:18 we know that we have t the petitions 06:20 that we have asked of HiHim.” 06:22 JoJohn, the man who wrote the Gospel of John 06:24 and the book of Revelation, 06:26 man who spent three and a half years 06:28 as o of Jesus' closest friends, says that if you prayay, 06:32 you can know t that God hears you, 06:34 and in knowing that He hears you, 06:37 you can be confident that He will grant yourur petitions. 06:41 Now,w, that has to be one of the most remarkable ings 06:44 ev written. 06:46 So, how do you go about aying in a way 06:50 that you can be certain your prayers will be e answered? Thanks for joining me. 08:09 The first prayer in the Bible 08:11 appears the third chapter of Genesis. 08:14 The last prayer in the Bible is in Revelation, 08:17 chapter 22, in the second last verse of theible, 08:20 where JoJohn rights, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus." 08:24 God wants us to pray. 08:26 He wants to communicatwith us. 08:29 So how do you pray effectively? 08:31 What's the secret? 08:33 've come to Orheiul Vechi, 08:35 fascinating place about an hour from Chisinau, 08:38 the capital of Moldova. 08:39 Until 19, Moldova was a communist land, 08:43 part of the viet Union. 08:45 Most people don't know how significant a part prarayer played 08:48 in bringing about the end d of communism. 08:52 And this histoc little place 08:55 gives us an opportunity to reflectn prayer. 08:59 They say the medieval town was built herere around 700 years ago. 09:03 Mongol invers came through a little after that. 09:06 And then there was a a time of peace under kings 09:09 ch as Alexander the Kind and Stephen the Great. 09:13 There was a palace here one time. 09:15 Governors lived here. 09:16 There was a mosque and d a minaret from which 09:19 the call to prayer was made. 09:21 Ruins of an old Christian church can be se. 09:24 And today, there's still a nastery here. 09:27 The cave monasastery goes back hundreds of years. 09:32 can't have been easy to build. 09:34 Monasteries are placaces of reflection. 09:37 Some have en built in the unlikeliest of settings. 09:41 In most every monastery, 09:43 prayer is highn the list of priorities. 09:47 Here at Orheiul Vechi, 09:49 the monastery is runun by the Eastern Orthodox Church. 09:53 Monks actutually used to stay in these little cells, 09:57 once upon a time. 09:58 Considering that the tempereratures here can be 10:00 absolutely frigid, that's really somethihing. 10:04 It's not unusual for monks, or othehers who live in a monastery, 10:07 to withdraw from the world and give themsels over to working, 10:12 to reading the Bible, and to prayer.r. 10:19 You don't see a monastic life 10:21 modeled or recommded in the Bible. 10:24 w, it's true there were times that people cameme aside 10:27 for periods of spiritual devotion 10:29 But they were connected toto active ministry for others. 10:33 The six weeks or so that Jesus ent in the wilderness 10:36 ter his baptism were immediately prior to 10:39 the beginning of h active earthly ministry. 10:42 In Mark 6 and verse 31, Jesus saido his disciples, 10:47 “Come apart by yourselves into a desererted place 10:51 and rest a while.” 10:52 Jesus could see th needed rest. 10:54 They needed time with him 10:57 to be rengthened for the ministry he called them to. 11:01 Does God hear prayers prayed in a monastery anany more clearly 11:08 than he hears prayers ayed in Does God hear the prayers of a the middle of a bustling city? monk or a prpriest or a minister 11:11 anmore clearly than he hears the prayers 11:13 of a construction worker or taxi driver? 11:17 Absolutely not. 11:20 The kekey to successful prayer is...to pray. 11:25 Whoever you e, wherever you are, 11:28 whatever you are: 11:30 if you'll pray, God will hear your prarayers. 11:35 Now, there's a common mistake at far too many people make 11:38 when it comes to prayer, 11:40 and that is thinking that prprayer is all about getting. 11:45 Now, it's true, when you me to God in prayer, 11:47 it's okay to do your fair share o of asking. 11:49 But prayer is so mucuch more 11:51 than coming tood with a shopping list. 11:55 Prayer is communion. 11:56 It's communication. 11:58 It's spending time in God's presence 12:00 so that you and God are on the same wawavelength, 12:03 so that God's s thoughts become your thoughts, 12:07 and so that you are strengthened to live a Christiaian life 12:10 in the very center of the will l of God. 12:13 I got an email a couple of da ago 12:15 from somebody asking about a difffficult temptation 12:19 he was facining. 12:20 As a matter of facact, 12:21 he said was beating him and he was feeling crushed, 12:24 and he couldn't get the victory ov a certain sin. 12:28 And in that email he said, 12:30 “But I don't read my Bible, and I don't pray.” 12:34 Wellll, ladies and gentlemen, there it is. 12:38 He wasn't pring. 12:39 So of course h was being defeated. 12:41 If he e had prayed, 12:43 well, might not have got that shiny red truck 12:45 that he was wantg, for example, 12:47 but he would have been strengthened t to meet the trials 12:51 that were cocoming into his life. 12:52 PrPrayer would have made the difference. 12:57 No while it's a good thing to pray in a peaceful l place, 13:00 itit's good to get away from it all, 13:02 it's good to be someplace that you'u're not going to be bothered, 13:04 what you need to know is how you cacan pray wherever you are 13:08 and still be heard bGod. 13:10 There'no special place that you must pray 13:12 in order to heard. 13:13 You can pray anywhere at all and anytime. 13:21 Prayer i is where your desires become molded 13:25 to the will of G. 13:26 In fact, prar is more about you trying to find out 13:29 what God's will is something, 13:31 rather than trying to bend God to suit yourill. 13:35 d prayer is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. 13:39 You can prayay all you want, but your dog might still die 13:42 anand you might still lose your job. 13:44 But if you pray, 13:45 you'll be strengthened to meet the trls life brings your way. 13:49 So how's your prayer life? Matthew 6, verse 6, 18:04 “BuBut you, when you pray, go into your room, 18:07 and when you have shut your door, 18:08 pray to yourather who is in the secret place; 18:11 and your Father who se in secret will reward you openly.” 18:15 Prive prayer should be private. 18:18 When you're pouring out t your heart to God 18:20 about what's neart to you, 18:21 you want to have a place to goto pray that's your own space. 18:25 That's importan 18:26 And noti that Jesus in that passage suggested 18:31 You find that thought expressed that God will all the way ththrough the Bible. answer your prayers. 18:35 In the next verse, 18:36 Jesus said there's no placen prayer 18:38 for what He referrrred to as vain repetition. 18:42 That's saying t same prayer over and over and over again. 18:46 You see, when it comes to prayer, 18:49 what God wants usto know is that prayer 18:51 is a meeting o of minds and hearts. 18:55 God wants to hear what's on yr heart. 18:58 He wants to ar from you in communication 19:01 about what's important to y. 19:03 Simply regurgitating a lelearned prayer 19:06 doesn't really constitute true pray. 19:09 I'll give you a case in point. 19:11 In my life I must have prayed ththe Lord's Prayer, 19:13 oh, thousands of times. 19:16 Becausas a child we were taught to pray that prayer 19:19 over and over and over, and again d again and again. 19:22 But think about it. 19:25 You'd be far betetter off praying that prayer once, 19:28 and thinking about it, and reflting on it, 19:32 really getting something out of the expience, 19:35 an you would saying that prayer a hundred times 19:38 without giving it any thought. 19:40 And then Jesus said in Matthew 6, verse 19:43 “In this manner, therefore, pray: 19:46 r Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” 19:50 Now, who are you praying to? 19:51 You're prayi to your Father. 19:55 And that ought to give y confidence and assurance. 19:58 And involved in that little phrase sus taught 20:01 was the idea of praise. 20:04 You're to praise God whwhen you pray. 20:10 PrPraise Him for who He is, for what He's done, for what He means toto you. for what He is, 20:15 Just that can keep you busy prayining for quite a while. 20:19 Verse 10:“Your kingdom come. 20:21 Your will be done on earth as it is i in heaven.” 20:25 We're to pray for the coming oGod's kingdom, 20:28 e setting up of His eternal kingdom when Jesus r returns. 20:32 You see, prayer focuses your mi on the important things 20:36 on the big picture. 20:38 And notice we're to prpray that God's will is done. 20:43 Now, you and I both know that we don''t always see our prayers 20:47 answered the way we wish th were. 20:49 Anmaybe that's because God knows 20:51 you don't reallyly need a raise right now. 20:54 Or you c can actually get by 20:55 without fine weatheher this weekend. 20:58 And that's fine. 20:59 But whwhat about when your child doesn't recover om cancer, 21:03 or Dad doesn't come back from the hospit? 21:05 What then? 21:07 Well, the fact is, that's life. 21:10 That's life in this sinful world. 21:13 w, it's not God's will that children should s suffer 21:15 or that parents should die. 21:17 That's not God's will at all. 21:19 t what is God's will is that you're saved 21:22 into Hisis eternal kingdom, 21:23 that you spend eternity with God. 21:26 And people who snd eternity with God are people 21:28 whwho've learned to say, like Job said, 21:31 “Though He sl me, yet will I trust in Him.” 21:35 Now, we don't always get what we want. 21:41 But we can trust God anyway, Our prayers are't always and say, “ThThy will be done.” answered the way we wish. 21:48 Mattw 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread.” 21:52 God wants us to ask m for what we need and for what we want. 21:56 But we need to rememember, God's not Santa Claus. 22:00 He knows what's best for us in eversituation 22:03 as He considers the big piure. 22:05 But He does wantnt us to pray big prayers. 22:09 John Knox, the gat Scottish reformer, 22:10 didn'just pray for the salvation of a family member 22:13 or a neighbor. 22:15 He prayed to God and sai 22:16 “Give me Scotland or I die.” 22:18 He prayed for thee salvation of a country. 22:22 In Second Kings, chaer 13, a king came to the prophet Elisha. 22:26 Elisha said to him, “StStrike the ground,” 22:29 which the king d did, three times. 22:32 Elisha was upset. 22:33 He sd, “If you had pounded on the ground five or six x times, 22:37 God would have given youcomplete deliverance from Syria. 22:41 But you only pounded on the ground ththree times.” 22:43 You see, God understood the king's timidity 22:46 in striking the ground as an expression of lack of faith. 22:50 God wanteded to do more for the king. 22:52 And often God wants too more for you. 22:56 Pray big prayers. 22:57 Now, if you're praying for a bigger house and a nicer car, 23:02 well, you want to be careful abouthat. 23:04 Sotimes that might be appropriate, 23:05 bufar too often it's just greed or ego. 23:09 But do pray big prayers, really big prayeyers, 23:13 and d know that God is big enough to answer them. 23:17 In verse 1 the model prayer goes on: 23:20 “And forgive us our debts,, as we forgive our debtors.” 23:24 First, it's importan to pray for forgiveness. 23:28 If you've sinned against God 23:30 and you have, then confess that sin. 23:34 John wrote directly about this in First Jo 1, verse 9: 23:36 “ we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to f forgive us 23:41 our si and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 23:45 There's s your assurance right there that God 23:47 will forgive your sins. 23:49 That's settled. 23:50 Don't doubt thatat. 23:52 But notice that caveat “as we forgive our debtors.” 23:56 how's that working out for you? 23:58 If you harbor unfoforgiveness toward others, 24:00 you're essentially begging God not to fgive you. 24:04 Pretty simple. 24:05 Verse 13: “And lead us not into temptatation, 24:10 but deliver us from m evil. 24:12 FoFor thine is the kingdom, and the power, 24:14 and the glory, for er. Amen.” 24:18 Your battle with sin, yoyour temptations, 24:21 your struggles, that's all material for prayer. 24:25 Talk to God about itit. 24:26 Appealal to God.
