00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written.
00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:24 When you open the Bible,
00:25 you find some remarkable things said about Jesus.
00:29 I'm gonna turn to John chapter 10
00:31 and read to you what it says in verse 10.
00:34 John 10, verse 10.
00:37 Honestly, it's one of the most hopeful verses
00:39 that you'll find in all of the Bible.
00:41 These are the words of Jesus Christ.
00:43 He said, "The thief does not come except to steal,
00:47 and to kill, and to destroy.
00:48 I have come that they may have life,
00:52 and that they may have it more abundantly."
00:55 How would you feel about having more abundant life?
00:57 What would that look like to you?
00:59 Longer life? Happier life?
01:01 Healthier life?
01:02 Well, there are certain things that you can do
01:04 about all of those things.
01:06 And today I'm talking to a couple of very special guests,
01:08 doctors David DeRose and Greg Steinke,
01:11 coauthors of the book
01:13 "30 Days to Natural Blood Pressure Control."
01:16 Blood pressure--high blood pressure is a killer.
01:20 Doctors, thanks very much for joining me today.
01:22 >>Dr. Greg Steinke: Thank you for having us.
01:23 >>John: Dr. DeRose, how big a problem is high blood pressure?
01:25 >>Dr. David DeRose: It is a huge problem.
01:27 One billion people throughout the world
01:29 have high blood pressure.
01:30 The numbers are staggering in our country as well.
01:33 If you look at our lifetime, our life span,
01:35 about an 80 percent likelihood that any individual in the US
01:39 will develop high blood pressure.
01:40 >>John: Looking through the book,
01:41 I found a staggering number in here:
01:43 80,000 people succumb or die from natural disasters
01:47 around the world-- that's a lot.
01:48 >>Dr. DeRose: That's a lot of people.
01:49 >>John: It's a tragedy--
01:50 9.4 million, more than a hundred times more,
01:54 die from high blood pressure.
01:56 It is a massive problem, isn't it?
01:58 >>Dr. DeRose: It's a huge problem,
01:59 and we've gotta do something about it, as a world.
02:01 >>John: Dr. Steinke, you're a family practice physician.
02:03 How many of the patients you see
02:06 are dealing with high blood pressure issues?
02:08 >>Dr. Greg Steinke: Every day we see multiple patients
02:09 who become so used to the problem that it, it, it--
02:13 we think about it as part of our, uh, everyday, uh, aspect.
02:19 >>John: I mean, you think about this, right?
02:21 You meet someone with diabetes. "Yep, sure."
02:23 Heart issues? "Sure."
02:25 High blood pressure-- this is normal for people,
02:28 and we just accept it as part of everyday life.
02:32 Need we accept high blood pressure as the norm?
02:35 >>Dr. Steinke: People think, uh, that it, they feel fine with it,
02:38 and so they act like nothing's wrong.
02:42 And yet, uh, it comes and kills them eventually
02:46 through, uh, a process, uh, that's very sneaky.
02:50 >>John: Yeah, okay, so this is the silent killer;
02:52 we've referred to that before,
02:54 the silent killer, which is high blood pressure.
02:56 Now, uh, we've spoken before about this, Dr. DeRose,
02:59 you and I, uh, about some of the ways that people can treat
03:03 high blood pressure.
03:04 Medication is a viable way to treat high blood pressure,
03:08 except that...?
03:09 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, except for two things.
03:11 One, although it may be the first course--
03:14 it may be the thing you need to do out of the box--
03:16 you cannot lower your blood pressure enough with medications
03:20 to get the maximal benefit.
03:21 Once you get to around 130/80, somewhere in that range,
03:25 further lowering of blood pressure, for many people,
03:28 actually increases the risk of complications.
03:31 But you wanna get that blood pressure as low as possible
03:34 with natural therapies.
03:36 So natural therapies have the most power
03:39 to help us avoid the silent killer.
03:41 >>John: Dr. Steinke, what are some things that elevate
03:44 blood pressure, that some people might be surprised.
03:48 Well, really? That elevates my blood pressure?
03:51 Can you think of some of those things?
03:52 >>Dr. Steinke: Well, one really surprising thing in the research
03:55 is what actually happens in the womb.
03:58 Amazingly, as a mother is going through her pregnancy,
04:02 if she has a lot of stress--she goes through mental stress,
04:05 physical stress, emotional stress that's very strong,
04:09 a loss of a loved one, a death in the family,
04:12 if in the 28-week to 36-week continuum--
04:16 that's where the kidneys are developing--
04:19 that stress occurs,
04:20 that can affect the development of the kidney,
04:23 and the kidney has less nephrons that develop properly.
04:26 Nephrons--these are the filtering units
04:28 that push blood through to make urine.
04:33 And if there's less nephrons, as you go through life,
04:36 um, your blood pressure is eventually affected.
04:38 >>John: Now, does that mean, then, that a,
04:40 that a pregnant woman who has a loss in the family,
04:43 a parent who dies-- does this,
04:45 does this doom the unborn child to these complications?
04:48 >>Dr. DeRose: We wouldn't say "dooms,"
04:49 but we definitely have things that are out of our control
04:53 that affect us, and to me, John,
04:54 it's so fascinating when we read the Bible,
04:56 that God often had special concern for pregnant women,
05:00 especially when God had a special plan.
05:02 I think of, uh, people like John the Baptist.
05:05 I think of, uh, Samson.
05:06 Special instruction, because that time of pregnancy,
05:10 the baby is being affected by what's happening to the mother.
05:13 >>John: There seems to be a science, or a branch of science,
05:16 that we're starting to learn more about what takes place
05:20 in the womb-- the prenatal influence.
05:22 That's, that's the real thing, isn't it?
05:23 >>Dr. Steinke: Absolutely.
05:24 We need to have special attention to pregnant moms.
05:28 We need to give pregnant moms, um, more room in jobs, etc.
05:33 so that they're not overstressed.
05:35 Whatever we can do as family members to support
05:37 a pregnant mother will do wonderful things for that baby.
05:40 >>John: Yeah, that's important.
05:42 Now, that's something that people might be surprised
05:46 raises blood pressure.
05:49 Well, let me turn that around before I ask you
05:51 about a specific chapter in the book.
05:53 What's something, Dr. DeRose,
05:54 that people might be surprised to learn lowers blood pressure?
05:58 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, it's your day-to-day eating habits.
06:00 A lot of people think, uh, some of this is just immaterial.
06:03 Most people have heard about the salt connection,
06:06 so they make that.
06:07 But they don't realize that there are a lot of other things
06:09 that we eat that raise blood pressure and, by contrast,
06:12 other things lower it.
06:13 Make it simple: Eat more plant foods, whole plant foods,
06:17 and you are going to have lower blood pressure.
06:19 Study after study has shown that.
06:20 >>John: Now, the chapter here-- I had it open a moment ago--
06:22 "Eating Your Way to Lower Blood Pressure"
06:23 I think is the name of the chapter,
06:25 or something very similar-- it's very, very helpful.
06:27 Um, so, eat better; lower blood pressure.
06:31 But, how bad is it for me that I grab that hotdog
06:35 on the street corner, or the burger at lunch, uh,
06:39 several times during the week?
06:41 What does that really do to my blood pressure?
06:42 >>Dr. Steinke: You know, it was interesting--
06:43 I had a patient; he was a marathon runner.
06:46 He was in great shape. He was only in his thirties.
06:49 But he'd come in, and his blood pressure was always
06:51 very, very high: 150s, 160s, uh, over 70s or 80s.
06:56 He was worried about his blood pressure.
06:58 He couldn't get it down.
06:59 He was trying to do everything right.
07:01 But he was eating too much meat.
07:03 He thought, oh, I'll just eat some red meat here and there,
07:06 no big deal; it's just part of my lifestyle.
07:08 But he was very sensitive.
07:09 As little as, uh, red meat as little as once a week
07:13 was raising his blood pressure.
07:14 Finally, he realized that this was the issue.
07:17 He cut it out completely.
07:18 His blood pressure went completely to normal.
07:21 >>John: Is it fair to say
07:23 most everyone would realize the same benefit,
07:26 or are some people predisposed to certain, uh, stimuli?
07:30 >>Dr. DeRose: We don't want to say "the same benefit,"
07:32 because we're all unique, but definitely dietary change.
07:36 A review, in fact, of some 80 studies showed
07:38 that whether your blood pressure was normal
07:41 or whether it was elevated,
07:42 eating more plant foods-- substituting animal products
07:45 for plant foods, lowered the blood pressure.
07:48 >>John: Why are plant foods so powerful?
07:50 >>Dr. DeRose: There's a number of reasons.
07:51 My favorite one to talk about are natural compounds--
07:54 we call them phytochemicals-- that are in plants.
07:57 We now know that among those phytochemicals
08:00 are ACE inhibitory peptides.
08:02 Now, the average person might say, "Well, who cares?"
08:05 But these compounds in plants are the same type of compounds
08:09 that are in prescription drugs.
08:11 So it's as if the Creator has said,
08:13 "Look, John, I don't want you to have high blood pressure.
08:16 Eat these foods that I gave to Adam and Eve in the garden,
08:19 and it will keep your blood pressure more normal."
08:21 >>John: Now, we go way back, and so--
08:23 in fact, we three go way back, uh, so I know you're not cranky.
08:28 Uh, and you're not saying, uh, you got to become a,
08:31 uh, some kind of diet radical.
08:34 Although, not that we'd necessarily be against
08:37 somebody really fully embracing the very best health principles.
08:42 Tell me about the sort of incremental changes
08:44 a person can start to make in their diet to be--
08:47 you spoke about one: eat--not eating red meat.
08:50 What are some other things that people can just do,
08:52 say, try this and see what happens?
08:55 >>Dr. Steinke: We really recommend
08:56 a progressive approach.
08:57 We realize that people can only do so much at one time.
09:00 Uh, fruits and vegetables, magnesium, potassium, calcium--
09:04 these all have strong benefits for blood pressure.
09:07 So how can I as a person get more fruits and vegetables
09:11 into my diet, you know?
09:14 Can I bring them home more? Can I make smoothies?
09:17 What can I do to get my blood pressure down
09:21 with fruits and vegetables?
09:22 Can I replace certain foods that I'm eating
09:25 with more simple foods, like fruits and vegetables?
09:28 >>John: I think it's true--
09:30 you know, we talk about the standard American diet--
09:33 S-A-D, SAD, the SAD diet.
09:36 Well, let's be honest.
09:38 The average person's eating a pretty sad diet.
09:40 >>Dr. DeRose: You're right, John.
09:42 And what's interesting about your whole question
09:44 is we've got a graph in this book,
09:46 probably one of the most powerful graphs,
09:47 and I know it because--
09:49 Greg has heard me tell this story before--
09:50 but someone who had heard me present on this topic
09:53 came up to me once, some months after my lecture,
09:56 said, "Dr. DeRose, your lecture changed my whole life."
10:00 And I guess, you know,
10:01 it's possible I was tempted to become proud at that moment,
10:04 but the Lord immediately removed any opportunity
10:07 for me to be proud because he next said,
10:10 "But it was nothing you said."
10:12 >>John: [laughs] Oh, thank God for that.
10:13 All right. All right.
10:14 >>Dr. DeRose: And so I'm thinking, well,
10:15 how did my lecture change his life, if it's nothing I said?
10:18 He said, "It was that graph that you showed."
10:20 It's actually figure 5.3 in the book.
10:22 And what it shows is just where
10:24 your line of questioning is going.
10:26 If you get some of those red meats,
10:27 some of those animal products, out of the diet,
10:29 the research shows you'll lower your risk both of diabetes
10:32 and high blood pressure.
10:34 But the more you get rid of those animal products,
10:36 the lower and the lower and the lower the risk gets.
10:40 So, fascinating data that's out there.
10:42 Eat more of those plant foods; you'll get more magnesium,
10:44 more potassium, more ACE inhibitory peptides,
10:47 and your blood pressure will tend to be lower.
10:49 >>John: And you'll have life more abundantly,
10:51 which is what Jesus came into this world to give us.
10:54 There's more to cover.
10:55 We'll be right back with more in just a moment.

19:03 What toxins and how?
19:05 >>Dr. David DeRose: One group of toxins that we talk about
19:07 that is especially devastating are the heavy metals.
19:10 So whether it's lead, whether it's mercury,
19:12 whether it's cadmium,
19:13 many of these heavy metals raise blood pressure.
19:16 And the scary thing is many people are being exposed
19:19 to these in their typical dietary choices.
19:23 So we're being bombarded with toxins,
19:26 contributing to higher blood pressure,
19:28 and this is adding to the burden of suffering worldwide.
19:31 >>John: Now, we know to get lead out of our paint,
19:33 but how do we get lead or mercury out of our diet?
19:36 >>Dr. DeRose: The problem is most animal products
19:38 concentrate these toxins.
19:40 And unfortunately, one food that has some good constituents--
19:44 that's fish--some of those fish have those omega-3 fats
19:47 that lower blood pressure and decrease inflammation.
19:50 Unfortunately, those same fish often concentrate toxins.
19:54 So the solution in the book and in our lectures,
19:57 we say don't go to the fish for the omega-3 fats;
20:00 go to the place where the fish got it,
20:02 and that is from plant sources of nutrition.
20:05 >>John: Now, um, another thing that I find fascinating
20:08 is that there are some supplements that you can take
20:10 that help lower, uh, blood pressure.
20:13 And it's--and we're not in the supplement business here,
20:15 but you are in the, in the business of giving good advice.
20:18 So what are some things that people can take,
20:20 uh, that would help with high blood pressure?
20:23 >>Dr. Greg Steinke: Um, the list, uh, that we looked at
20:25 was magnesium, coenzyme Q10, uh, omega-3, which we mentioned.
20:30 And one of my favorites is hibiscus tea.
20:32 Hibiscus is one of the most popular, uh, components
20:35 of herbal teas.
20:37 And hibiscus tea has a number of studies,
20:40 randomized trials, which are careful, controlled studies,
20:43 showing that hibiscus lowers blood pressure,
20:46 as strongly as medication.
20:48 >>John: As strongly as medication?
20:49 >>Dr. Steinke: That's correct.
20:50 >>John: Well, that's fascinating.
20:51 >>Dr. Steinke: So, three cups a day of hibiscus tea, um,
20:55 will lower your blood pressure as strongly as medication.
20:58 But one caution with that:
21:00 Make sure you rinse out your mouth
21:01 after you're finished drinking hibiscus tea.
21:03 You know why?
21:04 >>John: No, why?
21:05 >>Dr. Steinke: Because, um, it can be hard on the enamel.
21:08 >>John: Okay, well, that's good advice.
21:10 Now, you're both Christians.
21:11 Dr. DeRose, you're a minister of the gospel.
21:14 Uh, as you look into the Bible,
21:16 you find sort of a prescription in the Word of God--
21:20 you, you've referred to this-- in the Beatitudes.
21:23 Walk us through some of these principles in the Beatitudes,
21:26 which talk about a relationship with God
21:29 and some of the lifestyle impacts that has
21:32 that deals with high blood pressure.
21:34 >>Dr. DeRose: It's, it's a fascinating chapter,
21:36 because, as Greg and I and Trudy, our other coauthor,
21:39 were praying about how do we present to people
21:41 across the spiritual spectrum what are spiritual principles
21:45 that can impact our blood pressure,
21:47 we were drawn to the Beatitudes.
21:49 And I'll give you an example.
21:50 As Jesus began that statement of blessings,
21:53 the introduction to His Sermon on the Mount,
21:55 He said, "Blessed are those who mourn."
21:59 That was very early-- the second beatitude.
22:01 >>John: Yeah.
22:02 >>Dr. DeRose: "Blessed," the first one,
22:03 "Blessed are the poor in spirit"--the first one.
22:06 You may say, poor in spirit, mourning?
22:08 This doesn't--how would this help blood pressure?
22:10 >>John: And those were very countercultural principles
22:12 in the context in which Jesus shared them.
22:14 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely.
22:15 But as we look at those, and we look at the next beatitude,
22:18 about "Blessed are the meek,"
22:20 these--again, countercultural-- but all of them, they're,
22:23 they're basically helping us recognize our dependence,
22:27 recognize our need for God, humbling ourselves.
22:31 And we find that this is so important
22:33 in one of the elements that we spend a whole chapter
22:35 dealing with, and that is social support.
22:37 Because what we know about blood pressure is just like we found
22:40 with diabetes and heart disease and other conditions:
22:43 If you connect with other people,
22:45 and you make changes with other people,
22:47 you, in your church, have a group of people saying,
22:50 "We're gonna lower our blood pressure together,"
22:53 that magnifies the impact.
22:55 But the only way that happens, John, optimally,
22:57 is if I'm humble enough to learn from other people.
23:00 If I'm coming down to someone else's level, if I'm meek,
23:03 if I'm submissive, if I'm repenting of my own sins,
23:07 if I'm mourning for my own shortcomings,
23:09 that's when this social support is maximized.
23:12 >>John: So in Matthew chapter 5, Dr. Steinke,
23:15 let me, let me run a couple of these blessings past you.
23:20 "Blessed are the merciful," verse 7,
23:23 "for they shall obtain mercy.
23:25 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
23:28 Blessed"--maybe this is an easy one--
23:30 "Blessed are the peacemakers,
23:32 for they shall be called the sons of God."
23:34 Talk about heart health or, or, or high blood pressure health
23:38 in relation to that.
23:39 >>Dr. Steinke: One of the most important aspects,
23:40 I believe, is forgiveness.
23:42 "Blessed are the merciful"--
23:43 people who are willing to extend, uh, an attitude
23:47 of forgiveness to those who hurt them.
23:49 Um, there's a study done by Dr. Dick Tibbits
23:52 in Florida Hospital--amazing research, an eight-week study,
23:56 where he took people who, many of them, had anger issues,
23:59 blood pressure issues, and he walked them through
24:02 a forgiveness, uh, training program.
24:05 And by the end, their blood pressures were down.
24:08 They had a notable improvement in their blood pressure.
24:11 Forgiveness, letting yourself, um, put, put forgiveness
24:17 on another person.
24:18 And also with God, um, asking God to forgive you
24:22 for your shortcomings
24:23 and letting that peace, uh, come into your heart;
24:26 that lowers the cortisol and the stress hormones in your body,
24:31 improving your blood pressure.
24:33 >>John: It's not always easy to accept:
24:35 the Bible says, "All things work together for good."
24:38 Ultimately, we, we've gotta trust God in the midst
24:40 of all things, don't we?
24:41 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right.
24:42 >>John: Trust Him. We don't always understand it.
24:44 Why did my loved one die?
24:45 Why am I wrestling with this illness?
24:47 If you see the big picture, it's still possible to trust God.
24:50 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right.
24:51 >>John: Okay, as we wrap up, just a couple of quick points,
24:53 something we haven't discussed about, uh, high blood pressure,
24:56 its connection to faith in God, its connection to good health,
24:58 spiritual health--
24:59 what would you, what would you add as final words?
25:01 >>Dr. DeRose: You know, one thing I would say
25:03 is make sure that you know your blood pressure
25:06 and that you do something about it if it's elevated.
25:09 Just a simple motivational message.
25:11 >>John: Dr. Steinke?
25:12 >>Dr. Steinke: Absolutely.
25:13 You know, think about why you wanna be healthy.
25:17 Why, ultimately, do you wanna be healthy?
25:19 Whether it has religious and spiritual aspects to it--
25:22 maybe it has everything to do with your grandchildren,
25:25 or your children, or, or the friends that you have.
25:30 Think about the deeper aspect
25:32 and use that as a motivator to change lifestyle behaviors.
25:36 >>John: Dr. Greg Steinke, Dr. David DeRose,
25:38 thanks so much for joining me today.
25:39 >>Dr. DeRose: Our privilege.
25:41 >>John: So what do you do if you or somebody you care about
25:44 has high blood pressure?
25:46 Well, you don't do nothing. There is something you can do.
25:48 It's important that you do it.
25:50 And it's easy, and it's effective.
