00:22 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written.
00:25 I'm John Bradshaw, and together we are heading somewhere.
00:30 Before we get to our destination,
00:31 let's go back in time a little bit...
00:34 2017 was a very active year for natural disasters.
00:41 Remember the hurricanes?
00:43 What a hurricane season.

00:55 Now, those were the storms. There were others besides.
00:58 Then came the fires.
01:01 [Fire crackling]
01:02 In California, fire season comes every year,
01:05 and there's always a danger of fires, always.
01:08 In northern California,
01:10 a swarm of fires affected about six different counties.
01:14 The worst fire of them all: the Tubbs Fire.
01:17 And the Tubbs Fire began burning in the direction of Santa Rosa.
01:21 That's where we're going now.
01:23 In Santa Rosa alone,
01:25 43 people died as a result of the Tubbs Fire.
01:30 That's 43 known deaths; there may be more.
01:34 Nine thousand structures were destroyed,
01:37 5,500 of them in Santa Rosa.
01:40 Three thousand homes were destroyed in Santa Rosa.
01:44 Five percent of Santa Rosa's houses were destroyed.
01:48 The destruction was immense.
01:51 We're on our way to Santa Rosa
01:52 to talk to some survivors of the Tubbs Fire;
01:57 some victims of the Tubbs Fire, that is,
01:59 people who lost everything;
02:03 and people who lost nothing.
02:06 And we'll ask an important question.
02:08 And that question: Where was God?
02:12 Where was God when the fires burned?
02:13 Where was God as people suffered?
02:15 Where was God while people were dying?
02:18 Where was God in the midst of the devastation?
02:20 It's a very important question,
02:21 not only in the context of the fires in California,
02:24 the hurricanes that buffeted the United States,
02:26 but our own lives.
02:28 Everybody meets with tragedy, disaster, loss.
02:31 And that question is often asked.
02:33 That question is: Where was God?
02:36 We're heading to Santa Rosa.
02:38 By the grace of God, we'll find an answer to that question.

20:00 with my youth pastor, um, when I told her that I was,
20:04 like, "Okay, I'm ready; like, I want to do it.
20:06 I want to get baptized."
20:08 It was about a week and a half before the fires,
20:10 and that's when she had told me.
20:12 And she had said that Satan is pretty much going to test me.
20:18 She said, "It doesn't happen to everyone
20:20 who's going to get baptized, but I have had situations where,
20:24 you know, I've had kids who have had stuff happen to them
20:27 right before they get baptized,
20:29 and that makes them lose a little bit of faith in God,
20:32 or not trust Him, or, you know, get angry at Him or whatever."
20:37 And so she said, you know, "Just be aware."
20:40 Like, there's probably going to be something happen.

20:58 You know, it really does make you wonder.
21:01 If you've not been through a loss like this--
21:05 the vast majority of us have not--
21:09 it's kind of hard to put yourself
21:11 into somebody else's shoes.
21:12 What must it be like to go through?
21:16 Well, of course, while not everybody has had their home
21:19 burn or been through Hurricane Irma or some such thing,
21:25 we all suffer loss on some level.
21:29 And it tends to shake our faith somehow.
21:34 Sometimes it's a seismic shake, sometimes a little, small shake.
21:40 But that question comes to you: Where was God?
21:45 Where was God when my child got desperately ill?
21:49 Where was God when my spouse...ruined the marriage?
21:55 Where was God when the fire burned?
21:58 You know.
21:59 Where was God?
22:01 The place you find answers to that sort of question
22:04 is the Bible,
22:05 the only reliable place that you can find an answer.
22:09 So let me read to you from 2 Corinthians chapter 4,
22:13 from verse 16.
22:15 Here's what the Bible says:
22:18 "Therefore we do not lose heart.
22:20 Even though our outward man is perishing,
22:22 yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
22:26 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment,
22:30 is working for us a far more exceeding
22:32 and eternal weight of glory,
22:35 while we do not look not at the things which are seen,
22:37 but at the things which are not seen.
22:41 For the things which are seen are temporary,
22:44 but the things which are not seen are eternal."
22:49 So how about that?
22:50 The Bible talks about our "light affliction."
22:52 Now, I don't want to meet any of these householders
22:55 and tell them, "You lost everything.
22:56 That's a 'light affliction.'"
22:58 But if you look for God in the flames,
23:01 there's a chance you might not be able to see Him.
23:03 But if you keep on looking, God will come into view.
23:05 He'll come into focus.
23:07 If you're trying to hear the voice of God
23:08 while the fire engines are wailing,
23:10 it might be right then you can't discern
23:12 the voice of God.
23:13 It may be that you can.
23:15 But if you hang in there, God's leading will become clear.
23:18 And whatever you're going through right now,
23:20 whatever you have faced or will face,
23:22 you can know that God is right there with you, too.
