I'm John Bradshaw. 00:22 Thanks for joining me. 00:24 We're continuing our ongoing series, 00:26 “Great Chapters of the Bible,” 00:28 and we're looking at a chapter that qualifies as great 00:30 by any number of measures. 00:32 It's the longest chapter in the Bible, 00:34 176 verses, almost 2,500 words, 00:38 much longer than that next longest chapter in the Bible 00:41 which is First Kings 8. 00:43 None of the verses are longer than about 21 words though. 00:46 But Psalm 119 is a fascinating homage to God 00:51 and it speaks from beginning to end of the life-changing power 00:55 of the Word of God. 00:57 Now, there are a couple of things that are really 00:58 fascinating about this psalm. 01:00 Of the 176 verses, only one does not contain some explicit 01:07 reference to the word of God, 01:08 or God's revelation to the human family. 01:11 Now, you could argue that there are another couple, 01:13 but they reference God's faithfulness and mercy. 01:16 So, verse 122 seems to stand alone. 01:20 Here it is. 01:21 “Be surety for your servant for good; 01:24 do not let the proud oppress me.” 01:27 Every other one of the remaining 175 verses 01:31 references God's word, 01:32 whether it's a reference to Scripture 01:34 or to God's testimonies or His law 01:36 or statutes or precepts or judgments. 01:39 And this chapter is written in an interesting way. 01:43 Psalm 119 is written in 22 paragraphs 01:47 or stanzas of eight verses each. 01:50 Every one of those verses in each section 01:53 starts with the same Hebrew letter. 01:56 The psalm was written so that the first eight verses 01:58 all start with the Hebrew letter, “aleph,” 02:00 the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. 02:03 Next set of eight verses start with the second letter 02:05 of the Hebrew alphabet, “beth.” 02:07 Third group of eight starts with “gimel,” 02:09 then “daleth,” “he,” “waw,” 02:10 and so on all the way through the 22 letters 02:13 of the Hebrew alphabet. 02:15 That's how we end up with 176 verses. 02:19 And these verses all follow a certain theme, 02:22 a theme the writer establishes 02:24 at the very beginning of the psalm. 02:25 Now this is verse one. 02:27 “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, 02:29 who walk in the law of the Lord!” 02:33 Now that verse sets the tone for the entire psalm. 02:37 Those who are obedient to God are blessed. 02:40 That's really another way of saying that those 02:41 who are led by the Spirit of God are blessed. 02:44 Incidentally, that word blessed is the same word 02:47 which begins the Book of Psalms entirely, 02:50 when it says in Psalm 1, verse 1, 02:52 “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel 02:55 of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, 02:58 nor sits in the seat of the scornful,” 03:01 which is much the same thought really. 03:03 It's a theme that carries right through the Book of Psalms. 03:06 Faithfulness to God and the life-changing power, 03:09 the transforming power, of God's Word. 03:13 So look at Psalm 119 and verse 1 again. 03:17 “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, 03:19 who walk in the law of the Lord.” 03:21 Blessed or bless-ed are the complete, 03:24 those who are without blemish, 03:26 the upright, those without spot. 03:28 Now that's clearly God's plan for His children, 03:31 that they are recovered from the power of sin. 03:34 And what's written here really reflects the words of Jesus. 03:38 Jesus said, 03:39 “If you love Me, keep my commandments” in John 14:15. 03:43 Revelation 22:14 says, 03:45 “Blessed are those who do His commandments, 03:47 that they may have the right to the tree of life, 03:50 and may enter through the gates into the city.” 03:53 John wrote in First John 5, verse 3, 03:56 “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. 04:00 And His commandments are not grievous.” 04:03 The writer of Psalm 119 understood something, 04:07 not just from a theological perspective, 04:10 but from his own bitter experience. 04:12 Sin does damage. 04:14 As Isaiah the prophet said, it separates a person from God. 04:17 He said that in Isaiah 59, verse 2. 04:20 Jesus came into the world to save us from the penalty of sin. 04:25 But not only from its penalty, also from its power. 04:29 And also from its presence. 04:32 Here's where many people are selling themselves short 04:35 and selling God short. 04:37 Christianity, faith in God, 04:40 isn't just a matter of acknowledging God as God, 04:43 acknowledging Jesus as Savior, 04:45 and then going on with the old life 04:47 as though God hasn't impacted your life. 04:50 Faith in God is about God taking away your old sinful heart 04:54 and placing within you a new heart 04:57 that beats in harmony with the heart of God. 05:00 God makes you new. 05:02 And after He does that, He wants to keep you, 05:04 to sustain you, to live in you, 05:07 so that your life is lived for God's glory. 05:11 When God saves you, He puts you on a whole new path. 05:15 Now the question is, of course, 05:17 how in the world are we to stay on that path? 05:21 How can sinful people live new lives? 05:24 Psalm 119 answers that question in verse one. 05:27 We are to “walk in the law of the Lord.” 05:29 Look what the same writer wrote in Psalm 19, 05:32 starting in verse 7. 05:35 Psalm 19 and verse 7. 05:38 “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; 05:42 the testimony of the Lord is sure, 05:44 making wise the simple; the statues of the Lord are right, 05:49 rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, 05:53 enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, 05:56 enduring forever; 05:58 the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.” 06:02 It's been said that Psalm 119 is an elaboration 06:05 of that passage from Psalm 19. 06:08 Psalm 19 was written by David, 06:10 and although it isn't otherwise made clear, 06:12 thematically and linguistically, 06:15 it seems that Psalm 119 was written by David as well. 06:18 And then back in Psalm 19, he says in verses 10 and 11, 06:22 “More to be desired are they than gold, 06:24 yea, than much fine gold; 06:27 sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 06:31 Moreover by them Your servant is warned, 06:34 and in keeping them there is great reward.” 06:37 Of course, if David wrote this, 06:39 he knew that there's not a person alive 06:41 who can save themselves 06:43 or somehow muster up the strength to live godly lives. 06:47 He's talking about a profound reliance upon the word of God, 06:52 and this side of the cross we're able to say, 06:54 and upon Jesus the Word made flesh. 06:58 There is power in the Word of God. 07:00 Paul called the Gospel, 07:01 “the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” 07:05 in Romans 1, verse 16. 07:07 And this is reiterated in Psalm 119. 07:10 Look at verse 9. 07:13 “How can a young man cleanse his way? 07:16 By taking heed according to Your word.” 07:20 Now, isn't that a profound thought? 07:23 And a helpful thought? 07:24 If you're looking to live a life of integrity, 07:26 a life that honors God, 07:28 if you're looking for God to bring out the best in you, 07:31 then this is for you. 07:33 How can a person cleanse his or her way? 07:35 By listening to, by taking note of, 07:39 the word of God. 07:41 And verse 11 pretty much repeats the thought. 07:44 “Your word I have hidden in my heart, 07:47 that I might not sin against You.” 07:50 So how are we to live without falling into sin? 07:52 Only one way, by taking heed to God's Word, 07:56 by letting God's Word have its way in our lives. 07:59 By making decisions based on the Word of God. 08:02 By consulting the Bible and letting the Bible be your guide. 08:08 It's too easy today to ignore the Word of God. 08:10 Too many distractions today that make it easy 08:12 to take your cue from other places. 08:14 In this world, you're either going to acknowledge 08:16 God's Word as your guide, or, well, something else. 08:21 And there's nothing else that brings into your life 08:24 the transforming power of God. 08:26 Let me suggest something. 08:27 If you're not taking time with God's Word, 08:29 start doing so right away. 08:32 Take time every day. 08:34 Every morning read a passage of the Bible. 08:36 Let God's Word speak to you. 08:38 Let God's Word fill you, cleanse your mind with God's principles. 08:43 Have His Word on the tip of your tongue. 08:45 Take your Bible with you. 08:47 Read it when you get a few moments during the day. 08:49 Memorize Bible verses that you know will be helpful to you. 08:53 Isaiah wrote that God will keep in perfect peace 08:56 the person whose mind has stayed on God. 08:59 Depending on the research you read, 09:00 it seems that most Americans never 09:03 or very rarely read the Bible. 09:08 And that could explain a lot. 09:10 How's it working out for you? 09:12 If you'll take time in the word of God, 09:13 if you'll read the Bible regularly, 09:16 systematically, you'll find the peace and the power 09:20 and the presence of God in your life in an amazing way. 09:25 In a moment, in Psalm 119, 09:28 does the Bible writer exaggerate to make his point? 09:32 ♪(Music begins)♪ I'll be right >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 10:47 We're looking at Psalm 119 in our ongoing series, 10:51 “Great Chapters of the Bible.” 10:53 It's the longest chapter in Scripture at 176 verses, 10:56 almost two-and-a-half thousand words. 10:59 It's been said that the great missionary David Livingston 11:02 memorized the entire psalm, 11:04 a chapter that would take you around 15 minutes to recite 11:07 or to read out loud. 11:09 Again and again, Psalm 119 speaks about God's word, 11:13 His commandments, His statutes, His law. 11:16 This is the Bible writer recommending the Bible 11:19 as the source of strength for believers, 11:22 as the means of receiving not only powerful holy living, 11:26 but also hope in this world and in the world to come. 11:30 Notice what it says starting in verse 14 11:33 and think about the words used. 11:36 “I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, 11:40 as much as in all riches. 11:42 I will meditate on Your precepts, 11:45 and contemplate Your ways. 11:47 I will delight myself in Your statues; 11:50 I will not forget Your word.” 11:52 I've rejoiced in Your testimonies 11:55 as much as in all riches? 11:58 Now, David was a wealthy man. 12:00 Here he says that God's Word meant more to him 12:02 than all the wealth he could accumulate. 12:05 So, let's ask an honest question here. 12:07 Is this just hyperbole? 12:09 Is David simply exaggerating to make a point? 12:13 No, he's not. 12:14 For him, God's Word was the most precious commodity he knew of. 12:19 For those who live in parts of the world where the Bible 12:21 is freely available and you can live your faith in freedom, 12:24 it might be less easy or less common 12:27 to feel that way about the Bible. 12:30 But David was deadly serious about this. 12:33 And what did he do with the Word of God? 12:36 Well, he meditated on it. 12:38 He contemplated it. 12:40 He thought about it. 12:41 He chewed it over in his mind. 12:44 He was determined not to forget it. 12:47 You know, this modern world 12:48 where our minds seem to be always occupied. 12:51 We're checking social media or, or email. 12:54 People drive along listening to the radio 12:56 or to music they brought with them. 12:58 Life is full of flashing lights and distractions. 13:02 It's not nearly as easy as it used to be 13:04 to simply think about God's Word. 13:06 Less people do it. 13:07 To let God's Word wash over your mind 13:10 and influence your daily life. 13:12 Modern life conspires against faith. 13:16 I've been told by people a thousand times, 13:18 “I'm just too busy.” 13:19 “I just don't have time.” 13:22 Who do you think worked it out that way? 13:24 The devil does not want you to read the Bible, 13:27 and he's figured out a thousand ways 13:28 to keep you from getting into it. 13:30 But David, he meditated on God's Word. 13:34 Now don't get this confused with Eastern religious practices. 13:37 Meditating on the Bible has nothing to do 13:40 with emptying your mind or repeating a mantra. 13:43 It's about focusing on the Word of God. 13:45 Thinking about Scripture. 13:47 Letting it sink into your mind. 13:49 Ask yourself, when did you last really focus on God's Word? 13:55 Thinking about what God is actually saying to you 13:58 through the Bible? 13:59 Considering what a verse really says and wondering with God 14:02 about how that verse or passage should be applied to your life? 14:06 That's the meditation being written about. 14:08 That is healthy and it's helpful. 14:11 Now it says in verse 24, Psalm 119, verse 24. 14:16 “Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.” 14:21 Now see how practical that is? 14:22 The word of God is to guide you. 14:24 It advises you. 14:26 You make your decisions for life 14:28 on the basis of what God suggests. 14:31 God wants you and me to be just like that. 14:33 When it's decision time, it's Bible time. 14:36 What does God have to say about this decision in your life? 14:39 You'll know if you take the time to read and pray. 14:43 Now, look at this passage. 14:45 It is powerful. 14:46 We start in verse 34. 14:49 “Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; 14:52 indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart. 14:55 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, 14:58 for I delight in it. 15:00 Incline my heart to Your testimonies, 15:02 and not to covetousness.” 15:05 You see what the writer is saying here? 15:07 I will keep your law, that's my will, my purpose. 15:10 But, God, make me walk in the right way, 15:13 bend my heart in Your direction. 15:16 David knew what you and I need to know for sure. 15:19 Desires to do right in the sight of God are well and good, 15:22 but without God taking the reins of your heart, 15:25 without God having possession of your will, 15:28 if you don't surrender to God and let Him have your will, 15:31 those desires to live God's way 15:32 are only going to end up in frustration. 15:37 Too many people fail spiritually where they might succeed 15:41 because they don't surrender their will to God. 15:43 If you're not asking and asking and asking God 15:47 to take your heart and your will, 15:49 it's time to do that right now. 15:50 Now, as the twelfth set of eight verses begins in Psalm 119, 15:55 you read this in verse 89. 15:59 “Forever, O Lord, Your Word is settled in heaven.” 16:04 Now this speaks to the eternal nature of God's word. 16:07 Forever. 16:09 It's much like what Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 40 in verse 8. 16:13 “The grass withers, the flower fades, 16:16 but the word of our God stands forever.” 16:18 It's like what Jesus said in Matthew 5 in verse 18. 16:21 “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, 16:25 one jot or one tittle will by no means 16:29 pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” 16:32 You don't want to make the mistake of thinking 16:34 that somehow God's word or God's law isn't important today. 16:39 The psalmist understood what Jesus understood. 16:43 God's word lasts forever. 16:45 It matters forever. 16:48 No matter what the skeptics say or what the critics say, 16:52 God's word is as relevant today as it has ever been. 16:57 In a moment, perhaps the lawlessness today. 18:45 ♪(Music changes)♪ The battle is real. 18:48 Undoubtedly you've experienced it. 18:50 You might be caught in the middle of it now. 18:53 Can you see yourself in that picture, 18:55 doing the things that you know you should not? 18:57 See yourself in that picture? 18:59 You want a way out of lawlessness? 19:01 You want a way out of slavery to the old life? 19:05 Jesus is that way. 19:08 “Lawless,” 19:09 watch now on It Is Written TV. 19:14 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 19:16 We're continuing our series, “Great Chapters of the Bible.” 19:20 And today we're looking at Psalm 119. 19:23 It's a powerful chapter of the Bible. 19:26 It's the longest psalm and every verse but one 19:30 of its 176 verses speaks in some way to God's Word 19:34 or His law or to God's revelation to humanity. 19:38 Some quick points from Psalm 119. 19:40 This is verse 97. 19:42 “Oh, how I love Your law! 19:44 It is my meditation all the day.” 19:48 And David meditated on God's Word 19:49 and here he says, on God's law. 19:52 He thought about it. 19:53 He let it sink deep into his mind. 19:56 In verse 98, he says he has more understanding than his enemies. 20:01 In verse 99, more understanding than his teachers. 20:04 And in verse 100, more understanding than the ancients. 20:09 Why? 20:10 Because he keeps God's precepts. 20:13 The Bible will open up your mind. 20:16 I met a woman recently who couldn't read at all 20:20 until she was in her late thirties, 20:22 and she learned to read when she got a Bible 20:26 and began to read the Bible. 20:28 Changed her life. 20:29 I could tell you about a young man who never thought 20:31 it was possible that someone as slow as him 20:34 could ever go to medical school. 20:35 He wasn't a smart kid. 20:37 But Bible study opened up his mind 20:41 and expanded his understanding. 20:43 There is power in the Word of God. 20:46 There's a similar thought expressed in verse 130. 20:48 “The entrance of Your words gives light; 20:52 it gives understanding to the simple.” 20:55 Now verse 105 is likely the best-known verse in Psalm 119. 21:01 It says, 21:02 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” 21:08 And if you could sum up Psalm 119 in one verse, 21:12 this might be the one verse that you'd use. 21:16 That's what the Bible ought to be, 21:17 your light in a dark world, 21:19 that guide you need to guide you in times 21:21 when you're not sure which way to go. 21:23 A light on your pathway. 21:26 Why does God call it that? 21:27 A lamp and a light? 21:29 The God of heaven is our only hope in this world of sin. 21:33 And it is a world of sin. 21:34 Just look around. 21:35 If you haven't experienced that in your life, 21:37 then you've seen it in the life of someone that you care about. 21:40 But God's word can guide you. 21:42 It can offer you hope. 21:43 It'll keep you. 21:44 Where do I go with my life? 21:46 God's word will tell me. 21:47 How can I have a hope in this world? 21:49 I find that hope in God's word. 21:51 How do I know the right direction to go? 21:53 God will lead me through His Word. 21:57 And what this means is that God 21:58 wants to have a personal relationship with you, 22:00 where He speaks to you through Scripture. 22:03 He wants you to be acquainted with what the Bible says. 22:06 Not merely doctrinally, as important as that is, 22:10 but experientially. 22:13 How well do you know God? 22:15 A big problem in this world 22:16 is that people simply don't know God. 22:18 They've heard about Him. 22:20 But often it's a very negative report. 22:23 Have you taken the time to really get to know God? 22:25 Imagine if the answer to that question is no. 22:28 In the Book of Job you'll find this encouragement. 22:30 It's Job 22:21. 22:32 “Acquaint yourself with Him and be at peace; 22:35 thereby good will come to you.” 22:38 In other words, get to know God, 22:41 and when you do, peace will flood your life. 22:46 Verse 136 of Psalm 119 is interesting. 22:50 It says, “Rivers of water run down from my eyes, 22:55 because men do not keep Your law.” 22:57 What do you think he'd say today? 23:00 Now Christians who emphasize grace, 23:03 and, honestly, that should be all Christians, 23:05 shouldn't get nervous about this emphasis on the law. 23:07 No, the Bible writer isn't talking about salvation by law 23:11 or salvation by works. 23:12 He's talking about the beauty and the power of God's word. 23:16 How much he loves it. 23:17 And the powerful effect it has on his life. 23:19 The psalmist would recognize that God's law 23:21 and God's grace are in perfect harmony. 23:24 It's not a matter of one or the other, 23:26 it's both and, not either or. 23:29 You can row your boat with just the oar of grace 23:32 or with just the oar of obedience, 23:34 and in both cases you'll find yourself 23:37 going around in circles. 23:38 That's what happens when you row with just one oar. 23:41 But, but row with both oars, with grace and obedience, 23:47 and you'll be led by God in that straight line of faith and love. 23:52 Now notice verse 146 with me. 23:56 “I cry out to You; save me, and I will keep your testimonies.” 24:02 That's clearly expressed. 24:04 You save me and my response to You is that I obey You. 24:08 Obedience is the response of the sinner 24:10 to the salvation that God grants. 24:12 It's not the root of salvation, 24:14 but obedience is the fruit of salvation. 24:17 But one more verse to look at in Psalm 119, 24:20 that great testimony to the transforming power 24:23 of the Word of God. 24:24 Verse 165. 24:27 The writer says, “Great peace have those who love Your law, 24:32 and nothing causes them to stumble.” 24:35 If you want peace in your life, 24:38 and everyone does, choose to love God's law, 24:41 God's word, His testimonies, His precepts, 24:45 His judgments, His statutes. 24:47 In this psalm, 24:48 David isn't simply saying that he respects the Bible, 24:51 he's saying he loves the Word of God. 24:53 And it brings assurance and peace into his life. 24:58 Verse 165 is much like the thought 25:00 that Isaiah placed into Isaiah 32:17. 25:04 “The work of righteousness will be peace, 25:07 and the effect of righteousness, quiet and assurance forever.” 25:11 It's like what Paul wrote in Romans 5:1, 25:14 “Therefore, being justified by faith, 25:17 we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 25:21 When you make God's word your guide, 25:24 the authority for your life, 25:26 when you choose to allow God to have your heart, 25:28 that's when you have peace. 25:30 Let me ask you. 25:31 How's that working out for you? 25:33 It's not reasonable to expect real peace in your life 25:36 if you're not making time for God and His Word. 25:38 This great chapter of the Bible is an encouragement to everyone. 25:43 Incorporate the Bible into your life. 25:46 Read it. 25:47 Dwell on it. 25:49 You'll learn to love it, and you'll love its Author. 25:52 Our time on this earth is just so short. 25:55 People can make time for everything, 25:57 social media, and, and, and binge watching television series 26:00 and sport and who knows what else. 26:05 But is there time in your life for the most important thing? 26:08 Hide God's word in your heart. 26:10 Let if fortify you, strengthen you. 26:12 Let it fill your mind. 26:14 Follow where it leads you, 26:16 and you'll find that you have the Word made Flesh, 26:18 Jesus, present in your life like never before. 26:24 >>John Bradshaw: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 26:26
