00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:24 You might not have heard of Snodgrass Hill. 00:28 It's an unassuming sort of mound. 00:31 Standing at 896 feet, 00:33 there are 885 summits in the state of Tennessee 00:38 higher than Snodgrass Hill. 00:40 But it's a significant landmark for a number of reasons. 00:45 It's located in the Chickamauga National Battlefield, 00:48 nine miles or so from downtown Chattanooga. 00:51 ♪[dramatic music]♪ 00:52 The Battle of Gettysburg saw by far the most casualties 00:55 of any Civil War skirmish, 00:57 but second was the Battle of Chickamauga, 01:00 which took place in September of 1863: 01:03 34,500 casualties, 01:06 4,000 dead, 01:08 25,000 injured, 01:10 and more than 6,000 captured or missing. 01:13 There was a lot of death and hurt. 01:16 And Snodgrass Hill saw plenty of it in the northwest 01:20 of what is now the Chickamauga National Military Park. 01:24 One of the most significant things related to Snodgrass Hill 01:28 is not a "what" but a "who." 01:32 Or a "what," or maybe a "who." 01:35 I guess it depends on who you ask. 01:36 There's a story told about a certain soldier. 01:39 No one seems to know his name. 01:41 But in this story, the soldier who fought in the bloody 01:45 Battle of Chickamauga lost his head, literally. 01:50 The story goes that a cannonball took his head off, 01:53 and that ever since, he's been roaming the battlefield at night 01:56 searching for his body. 01:59 The story began circulating shortly after the battle 02:02 was over, but what seems to have given the story credence 02:06 is an account given by a man 02:07 who at one time was the chief ranger of the battlefield. 02:11 He claimed to have encountered "Old Green Eyes," 02:15 as the ghost is known. 02:17 He said he was walking in the battlefield one morning 02:20 around four o'clock, walking along a road, 02:23 when "an apparition came at me." 02:26 He said it was wearing something like a long trench coat, 02:29 and it turned and looked at him. 02:31 He said the hair on his neck just stood up. 02:35 He told a Chattanooga news channel, 02:37 "I know people don't believe in ghosts, 02:39 but I know what I saw, and it wasn't human." 02:43 ♪[eerie music]♪ 02:44 So what's up with Old Green Eyes? 02:46 Does he exist?
