00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written.
00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:24 Emily Post became famous for writing about etiquette. 00:28 By the time she was 50 years old, 00:30 she was already an accomplished writer, 00:32 but it was then that her best-selling book, 00:35 "Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, 00:39 and at Home," was published. 00:42 In 1922 a lot of people needed a little guidance in how to... 00:48 live like ladies and gentlemen. 00:50 One writer noted that at the time, 00:52 "The country's exotic mix of immigrants and newly rich 00:56 "were eager to fit in with the establishment. 00:59 "Men had to be taught not to blow their noses 01:03 into their hands or to spit tobacco onto ladies' backs." 01:08 Emily Post wrote advice like this: 01:11 "Best Society is...an association of gentle-folk, 01:15 "of which good form in speech, charm of manner, 01:19 "knowledge of the social amenities, 01:21 "and instinctive consideration for the feelings of others, 01:25 "are the credentials by which society the world over 01:28 recognizes its chosen members." 01:31 She believed a man wasn't a gentleman if he didn't live up 01:34 to a code of honor, which she said is "more important 01:38 than any mere dictum of etiquette." 01:41 So, should the man always pay for dinner? 01:45 Should a man hold open a door for a woman? 01:48 How about this question: 01:50 Should a man ever give his wife away to a stranger 01:55 if he feels that he's in danger? 01:57 How do you think Emily Post would answer that? 01:59 We're continuing our series "Great Characters of the Bible," 02:03 and we're looking at a very flawed individual 02:06 who made some terrible decisions. 02:09 He had an affair with his wife's personal assistant, 02:12 fathered a child with a woman who was not his wife. 02:15 He attempted to kill his son. 02:18 And he's often referred to as "the father of the faithful." 02:23 In spite of his, his considerable personal failings, 02:28 Abraham was God's man, and we're going to see together 02:32 how that could be and how Abraham's experience 02:35 can encourage us to grow in faith in God. 02:39 His name is mentioned 294 times in the Bible, 02:43 the first time in Genesis 11, verse 26. 02:46 And way back then, his name wasn't even Abraham. 02:51 "And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, 02:56 and Haran." 02:58 The three boys were raised in the same circumstances, 03:00 yet one of them was changed, transformed really, 03:05 and became one of the pivotal figures in all of the 66 books 03:08 of the Bible. 03:09 Today he's revered and respected by Judaism, Christianity, 03:13 and Islam, which means that he's important 03:16 to more than half of the world's population. 03:19 And we're going to find out just what it was 03:21 that makes Abraham such a big deal. 03:25 Hebrews 11, the Bible's great faith chapter, says, 03:28 "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out 03:31 "to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. 03:34 And he went out, not knowing where he was going." 03:37 Now, those two words, "by faith," without exaggeration, 03:42 they're two of the most important words 03:44 in the entire Bible. 03:46 And if we understand them, 03:48 they'll provide a framework for our entire lives. 03:51 If we don't get hold of that concept, 03:53 then there's no way we can live a successful life in this world 03:57 or in the world to come. 04:00 To track Abraham's journey of faith, 04:02 we'll begin in Genesis chapter 12, 04:04 starting with verse 1: 04:06 "Now the Lord had said to Abram: 'Get out [from] your country, 04:09 "'from your [kindred] and from your father's house, 04:12 "'to a land that I will show you. 04:14 "'I will make you a great nation; 04:16 "'I will bless you and make your name great; 04:19 "'and you shall be a blessing. 04:21 "'I will bless those who bless you, 04:23 "'and I will curse him who curses you; 04:26 and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.'" 04:31 See, God had an important work for Abram. 04:33 God was looking for someone who would keep alive 04:36 the knowledge of the true God and represent God 04:39 and make Him known throughout the land of Canaan, 04:42 where idol worship and human sacrifice were common. 04:47 Now, this was just 100 years or so after the Tower of Babel. 04:51 God wanted a living example of what a life of faith in God 04:54 looked like. 04:55 And there had to be a line so that God could fulfill 04:58 His promise to Adam and Eve that one day the Seed of the woman 05:02 would be victorious over the serpent. 05:05 God was looking for a family into which the Messiah 05:09 could be born. 05:10 And for that to work, Abram really needed to get away 05:13 from his idol-worshiping family and friends. 05:16 So off they went. 05:18 But before too long, a famine caused them to detour to Egypt, 05:22 and just 10 verses after God told Abram that He would make 05:27 of him a great nation, Abram-- 05:30 [sighs] well, let's just say his actions 05:33 wouldn't have been recommended by Emily Post. 05:37 What Abram did was not "best society" by any means. 05:43 His wife Sarai was very beautiful, and Abram was afraid 05:46 that Pharaoh would kill him in order to take Sarai as his own. 05:51 So instead of defending his wife's honor 05:54 and instead of trusting God to work it all out, 05:57 Abram convinced Sarai his wife to be complicit 06:00 in what was a terrible scheme. 06:03 He said that Sarai was his sister, 06:04 which, in fact, was technically true as she was his half-sister. 06:10 But fear had got the better of Abram, 06:13 and he lost out because of that. 06:15 God was trying to build and grow his faith, 06:17 and Abram lost the opportunity to see God work in his behalf. 06:22 You know, God will allow difficult situations to come 06:24 into our lives so that we can exercise faith, 06:28 so that we can see Him work, 06:29 which would then increase our faith. 06:33 Is there something God wants you to grow from 06:36 that instead you're running from? 06:40 Didn't work out well for Abram when he ran. 06:43 But God didn't cast him off, 06:45 and the Pharaoh didn't keep Sarai, Abram's wife, as his own, 06:50 even though pharaohs could do that sort of thing. 06:52 God intervened, and He continued to work with Abram, 06:56 just like He does with us, even when we make mistakes. 07:01 It's good to know that God is the Potter, 07:03 we're the clay, and He allows life's experiences to mold us 07:08 on our journey to the promised land. 07:10 According to Genesis 13, 07:12 "Abram was very rich in livestock, 07:15 in silver, and...gold," 07:18 but all was not well. 07:20 His nephew Lot had traveled with him, and things became tense. 07:25 "Now the land was not able to support them, 07:27 "that they might dwell together, for their possessions 07:30 were so great that they could not dwell together." 07:33 Verse 7: 07:34 "And there was strife between the herdsmen 07:36 of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock." 07:41 But rather than get embroiled in an argument, 07:44 Abram saw a solution. 07:46 He met with Lot and gently laid out the problem, 07:50 and then he said, 07:51 "Please let there be no strife between you and me, 07:55 "and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; 07:57 "for we are brethren. Is not the whole land before you? 08:01 "Please separate from me. 08:03 "If you take the left, then I will go to the right; 08:06 or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left." 08:10 Abram could have chosen first. 08:12 God had promised him the land, and as leader of the family, 08:15 he had the prerogative to choose the best. 08:18 Lot, on the other hand, 08:20 "lifted [up] his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, 08:24 that...was well watered everywhere." 08:26 And that's what he chose. 08:28 The River Jordan ran through the valley, 08:30 making it the perfect place to settle down and be comfortable. 08:34 After Lot left, the Lord said to Abram, 08:37 "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are-- 08:41 "northward, southward, eastward, and westward; 08:45 "for all the land which you see 08:47 I give to you and your descendants forever." 08:52 And then God made this beautiful promise: 08:55 "And I will make your descendants 08:56 "as the dust of the earth; 08:57 "so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, 09:00 "then your descendants also could be numbered. 09:04 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, 09:08 for I give it to you." 09:10 You know, Lot's decision wasn't wise. 09:13 That beautiful valley was soon to become... 09:16 it was soon to become a battlefield. 09:19 More on that in just a moment. 09:21 ♪[music swells and ends]♪ 09:30 >>Female Announcer: They're in the Bible especially for you: 09:33 God's promises, 09:34 made by a loving God who wants the best for you in this life 09:38 and the life to come. 09:39 Get "God's Promises," our free offer, 09:41 and experience the comfort and power of His promises 09:45 in your life. 09:45 Call 800-253-3000 09:49 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 09:53 Receive the promises today 09:55 by calling 800-253-3000. 10:00 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today 10:02 on It Is Written. 10:03 We're continuing our series "Great Characters of the Bible." 10:06 We're looking at Abraham, the father of the faithful. 10:09 When given the choice, Abram's nephew Lot 10:12 chose the well-watered valley and plains 10:15 close to the city of Sodom as his own. 10:18 In other words, he chose the best for himself. 10:22 It turned out to be a disastrous decision. 10:24 In the long term, there'd be the calamitous destruction 10:26 of Sodom and Gomorrah 10:28 and the ruinous effect that living there had on his family. 10:31 He'd lose his wife; he'd lose all of his possessions. 10:34 But in the short term, five kings marched against the people 10:38 of the valley and took Lot and his family captive. 10:41 So Abram took 318 servants, pursued the invaders, 10:46 attacked swiftly, and recovered all of the prisoners 10:49 and all the spoils. 10:51 So you're seeing growth with Abram. 10:53 He's flawed, but he clearly wishes to honor and serve God, 10:57 and he's a man of courage and principle-- 11:00 uh, mostly. 11:02 When he asked about an heir, about a son, God said to him, 11:07 "Look now toward heaven, 11:09 and count the stars if you are able to number them." 11:13 And then He added this: 11:14 "So shall your descendants be." 11:17 Right then and there, God made a covenant with Abram, 11:20 and God always keeps His promise. 11:23 But as time marched on, Sarai remained childless, 11:27 and the two got older and older. 11:30 And Sarai figured that she'd never be a mother. 11:33 So she took matters into her own hands. 11:36 She decided to give Abram her servant Hagar. 11:41 Polygamy had become so widespread 11:42 that it wasn't considered to be abnormal or unacceptable. 11:47 It was okay in that time and culture. 11:49 They'd have a child one way or another. 11:53 In this instance, not God's way. 11:55 Abram didn't bother to check with God, and he took Hagar. 12:00 When a son was born, well, 12:02 it got about as complicated as you might imagine. 12:05 Sarai was hard on Hagar, and Hagar "fled from her presence." 12:10 Abram and Sarai could have just trusted God. 12:13 Things would have worked out. 12:14 They had God's word, but they didn't do so. 12:18 Really, they tried to help God. 12:21 I mean, who ever heard of a couple that age having a child? 12:25 But God didn't need their help. 12:27 In their minds, even God telling them it was going to happen 12:30 didn't mean it was going to happen. 12:33 So they did what they could to help the process along, 12:36 and it all went bad, 12:38 as it does when we think we know more than God. 12:42 But God was so gracious. 12:44 "Now the Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water 12:47 in the wilderness." 12:49 He took the time to seek out Hagar. 12:51 "And He said, 'Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from, 12:55 "and where are you going?' [And] she said, 12:57 "'I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.' 13:01 "[So] the Angel of the Lord said to her, 13:03 "'Return to your mistress, 13:05 "'and submit yourself under her hand.... 13:08 "'I will multiply your descendants exceedingly.... 13:12 "'And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, 13:16 because the Lord has heard your affliction.'" 13:18 There are only a few people in the Bible 13:20 that God Himself named. Ishmael was one of them. 13:23 Ishmael means "I have heard you." 13:26 You don't want to forget that. 13:28 Hagar was a lowly servant in distress, and God heard her. 13:33 And when I say lowly, I mean the kind of lowly 13:36 where your employer can decide to impregnate you, 13:39 and you don't have a say in the matter. 13:41 Lowly. 13:42 God wants us to know that however insignificant 13:45 you may think you are, His heart is toward you. 13:49 He sees your distress. 13:51 He knows what you're going through. 13:53 He hears your cry, and He cares. 13:57 Now, "When Abram was ninety-nine years old, 13:59 "the Lord appeared to [him again] and said to him, 14:02 "'I am Almighty God; walk before me and be blameless.... 14:07 "'My covenant is with you, 14:08 "'and you shall be a father of many nations. 14:11 "'No longer shall your name be called Abram, 14:14 "'but your name shall be Abraham; 14:17 for I have made you a father of many nations.'" 14:20 God then went on to tell Abraham 14:22 that he and Sarah would have a son-- 14:24 not Sarai anymore, but Sarah. 14:29 The change of name indicated a change of experience. 14:32 They were going to trust God, to lean on God, 14:35 to follow Him by faith. 14:38 One day Abraham was sitting outside his tent 14:41 when three strangers stopped by to visit. 14:44 They told him something that would change everything. 14:47 In all honesty, it was something that would change 14:50 all of history. 14:52 Abraham was told, again, that Sarah would have a son. 14:57 "And the Lord said to Abraham..., 14:59 "'At the appointed time I will return to you, ... 15:01 and Sarah shall have a son.'" 15:04 And it's in the book of Romans where the gravity of all of this 15:06 is pointed out. 15:08 Paul writes that righteousness comes to a believer by faith. 15:13 Abraham gives us a powerful example of this. 15:16 Now, this is Romans 4, verse 13: 15:19 "For the promise that he would be the heir of the world 15:21 "was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, 15:25 but through the righteousness of faith." 15:27 Verse 19: "And not being weak in faith, 15:31 "he did not consider his own body, already dead 15:35 "(since he was about a hundred years old), 15:36 "and the deadness of Sarah's womb. 15:38 "He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, 15:42 "but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 15:46 "and being fully convinced that what He had promised 15:50 He was also able to perform." 15:52 Now, that is one of the best definitions of faith 15:56 that you will read in the entire Bible. 15:59 "Being fully convinced that what He"--God-- 16:03 "had promised, He"--God-- "was also able to perform." 16:09 That is faith. 16:11 When you accept and believe the promises of God, 16:14 the word of God, that's faith. 16:17 "And therefore," Paul wrote, quoting the book of Genesis, 16:20 "'it was accounted to him for righteousness.'" 16:24 Righteousness, salvation, comes by faith. 16:31 But let me clarify something: 16:33 This does not mean that the law of God is not important. 16:36 It doesn't mean that a person shouldn't obey the law of God. 16:39 That would be anarchy against the government of heaven. 16:43 The emphasis here is on how salvation comes, 16:46 how righteousness comes. 16:48 Salvation, righteousness, 16:50 does not come by the works of the law, but by faith. 16:54 We're not saved by the law, but by faith. 16:58 That's how we receive the gift the salvation. 17:01 But once we've received it, 17:04 of course you want to honor God and obey God. 17:06 To say that you don't need to obey God after you're saved, 17:09 it, well, it just doesn't make any sense at all. 17:14 Now, in a moment, Abraham takes faith to a whole new level. 17:19 I'll be right back. 17:20 ♪[music 19:12 Genesis 21 starts by saying, 19:14 "And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, 19:16 "and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken. 19:19 "For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old his son Isaac 19:34 when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him." 19:38 You can imagine the joy in that household when Isaac was born 19:43 to a father who was 100 years old 19:46 and to a mother who had entered her 90s. 19:49 But some people in the camp weren't laughing. 19:53 Hagar and Ishmael knew that the birthright and the inheritance 19:57 would now go to Isaac. 19:59 There was ill feeling. 20:01 It was a mess, and Hagar and Ishmael were sent away. 20:08 This wasn't easy for Abraham, 20:09 because he loved his son Ishmael. 20:11 But God promised He would bless Ishmael 20:13 and make a great nation of him, too. 20:17 And to this day, the two nations that descended from Abraham 20:20 have remained separated--and at odds with each other. 20:25 Isaac became a fine young man burnt offering 20:43 on one of the mountains... which I shall tell you." 20:46 What did he do? 20:48 Genesis 22, verse 3 says, 20:50 "So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, 20:54 "and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; 20:59 "and he split the wood for the burnt offering, 21:02 and arose and went to the place of which God had told him." 21:07 They journeyed for three days, 21:10 surely the longest three days of Abraham's life. 21:16 But here's the thing. Abraham was used to obeying God. 21:20 He knew the sound of God's voice. 21:23 He knew when God was talking to him. 21:26 Hebrews 11 says that Abraham believed God 21:29 would raise Isaac back to life. 21:33 Abraham placed the wood for the sacrifice on Isaac's back. 21:37 It's reminiscent of Jesus carrying the cross 21:40 on His own back. 21:41 The old patriarch "took the fire in his hand, and a knife," 21:45 and the two of them continued on together. 21:48 Suddenly Isaac broke the silence: 21:50 "My father!" he cried. "Look, the fire and the wood, 21:54 but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" 21:57 And Abraham replied in those never-to-be-forgotten words: 22:01 "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb 22:06 for a burnt offering." 22:08 Those words were prophetic. 22:10 God would provide His only Son to be the lamb, 22:14 "the Lamb of God, which [takes] away the sin of the world." 22:18 So the two of them continued their journey. 22:21 They continued in silence, 22:23 until "they came to the place of which God had told him. 22:26 "And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood 22:29 "in order; and he bound Isaac his son 22:33 and laid him on the altar, upon the wood." 22:37 No doubt he explained as best as he could 22:39 what God wanted him to do. 22:42 And do you know what's truly remarkable about this? 22:46 Abraham was, what, 115 years old? 22:49 Isaac could have overpowered him, run away from him. 22:53 It says a lot about the faith of Isaac 22:56 that he trusted his father, and God, to that extent. 23:00 Verse 10: 23:02 "And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife 23:05 "to slay his son. 23:07 "But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven 23:09 "and said, 'Abraham, Abraham!... 23:12 "'Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; 23:16 "'for now I know that you fear God, 23:18 "'[seeing] you have not withheld your son, 23:20 your only son, from me.'" 23:23 Abraham's faith was demonstrated by his actions. 23:27 It's one thing to say that you're a believer, 23:29 but your actions are really the proof of that. 23:32 And God saw that Abraham was a man of conviction, 23:35 a man of faith, and He said to Abraham, 23:38 "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, 23:41 because you have obeyed my voice." 23:44 And that promise was fulfilled in Jesus, 23:48 and here's where faith really matters. 23:53 The Jews in Paul's time had the idea that they were 23:55 automatically saved because they were descended from Abraham. 24:01 But Paul said in Galatians 3 in verse 7, 24:03 "Therefore know that only those who are of faith 24:08 are sons of Abraham." 24:10 And he clarified it again in verse 9: 24:13 "So then those who are of faith are blessed 24:16 with believing Abraham." 24:18 The chapter concludes with this promise: 24:21 "And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, 24:25 and heirs according to the promise." 24:28 Abraham is the father of faith, 24:31 and God calls you to exercise faith, too, saving faith. 24:37 Abraham couldn't see God, but he trusted God, 24:41 and he carried out God's will in his life. 24:44 Can you see forgiveness? 24:47 No, you cannot. 24:48 But you can know that God will forgive you, 24:51 based upon what He says in His Word. 24:54 Can you see Jesus? 24:57 Did you see Calvary where Jesus died? 25:00 No, and no again. 25:02 But you believe by faith that Jesus died for you 25:08 and that when you accept Jesus as your Savior, 25:11 you're a saved child of God. 25:13 We've never seen Jesus return to this earth, 25:16 but we know that one soon day He will, 25:19 and that on that day He will take the people of faith 25:21 home to be with Him forever. 25:25 Let me ask you this: 25:27 Can you exercise faith today? 25:30 Like Abraham, can you believe? 25:33 An old man believed he'd have a son, 25:36 and when he believed God's promise, 25:39 God counted it to him for righteousness. 25:43 Faith in God, in a good God, a loving God, 25:48 faith in Jesus, faith in a compassionate Savior, 25:51 a loving Savior. 25:53 Like Abraham, have faith in God today, 25:57 and know by faith that eternal life is yours. 26:05 >>John Bradshaw: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 26:07 exists because of the kindness of people just like you. 26:10 To support this international life-changing ministry, 26:13 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 26:17 You can send your tax-deductible gift 26:19 to the address on your screen, 26:20 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 26:24 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 26:27 Our number again is 800-253-3000, 26:31 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 26:35 >>John Bradshaw: Let's pray together now, 26:37 and we're going to pray that God will grow and increase 26:40 our faith. Let's pray. 26:41 Our Father in heaven, we thank You today for the example 26:44 of Abraham, a flawed man who grew in his relationship 26:49 with You and in his faith with You 26:51 to become the father of faith. 26:53 And so, Father, I pray today that You would grow our faith. 26:57 My friend, are you having trouble believing in God? 27:00 Father, give us grace to believe You today. 27:03 Do you have doubts about the Word of God? 27:05 Oh, heavenly Lord, give us faith in Your Word 27:09 as we read it and try it and see that You are good. 27:13 Friend, is there weakness in your life? 27:16 Heavenly Father, step into that weakness 27:18 and give us Your strength and Your presence. 27:20 Give us faith, for we read of Your people in the end of time: 27:24 "Here is the patience of the saints: 27:26 "here are they that keep the commandments of God, 27:28 and the faith of Jesus." 27:32 Lord, we see those two things demonstrated in Abraham's life: 27:35 obedience and faith. 27:37 Let them be seen in us as Jesus lives His life in us. 27:43 We thank You today. We ask Your blessing. 27:46 We pray in Jesus' name, amen. 27:50 Thanks so much for joining me. 27:51 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 27:53 Until then, remember: 27:56 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 28:00 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 28:04 ♪[dramatic theme music]♪ |
