00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:24 In the late 1960s, the Cuyahoga River 00:27 running through Cleveland, Ohio, was...it was in a real mess. 00:33 Steel mills and oil companies and paint manufacturers and more 00:37 dotted its banks. 00:39 And the river bore the brunt of a booming industrial sector. 00:42 To say the river was polluted is an understatement. 00:46 It was an ecological disaster, and everyone knew it. 00:50 Fish couldn't survive in it. 00:53 But a dirty river equated with successful companies, 00:56 and successful companies provided a lot of jobs 00:59 and hired a lot of workers. 01:01 So when the Cuyahoga River caught fire in 1969-- 01:06 caught fire, the river-- 01:09 no one was surprised. 01:11 In fact, by 1969 there were real efforts being made 01:13 by the mayor of Cleveland, Carl Stokes, and others 01:16 to clean up the river. 01:18 Clevelanders were used to the perilous state of the Cuyahoga. 01:22 In fact, it caught fire many times over the years. 01:25 The 1969 fire, which burned for about 20 minutes, 01:28 didn't really get much attention at the time. 01:32 Right around that time people were starting to look 01:34 for solutions for the troubles ailing the world. 01:37 In 1957 the Natural History Museum described 01:40 the River Thames as it flowed through London, England, 01:43 as "biologically dead," unable to support life. 01:48 Around that time, a prominent newspaper in London, 01:50 the Guardian, described the river 01:52 as "a badly managed open sewer." 01:56 So there were some problems. 01:58 And there still are. 01:59 There are rivers around the world today 02:01 that are monumentally polluted, 02:03 and many people have to bathe in them, 02:04 even drink the water from them, 02:06 even though it's been fouled by industrial pollution. 02:10 And people die as a result. 02:12 The air above many cities is deadly. 02:15 According to researchers from Boston College 02:17 and the Public Health Foundation of India, nearly 1 in 5 deaths 02:22 in India in 2019 could be attributed to air pollution. 02:27 That's a staggering amount. 02:28 But here's the question: 02:30 What can we do about all this? Can we fix it? 02:34 A little over 30 miles outside Tucson, Arizona, 02:37 is something that was once known as Biosphere 2. 02:41 The idea was to build 02:43 an artificial closed ecological system, 02:46 a place that was entirely independent from the outside. 02:51 There'd be a rainforest, 02:52 an ocean, albeit a very small ocean, 02:55 mangrove wetlands, and more. 02:58 It was meant to be a model that would demonstrate 03:00 how life could be supported in outer space. 03:04 But...they weren't able to produce enough food or oxygen. 03:08 Animals and plants died off. 03:11 There were interpersonal challenges 03:13 as people were confined together in the biosphere 03:15 for many months. 03:17 It was never meant to be heaven on earth, 03:20 but it was intended to demonstrate 03:22 how people could live on earth-- or in space--while avoiding 03:26 the usual ecological problems that challenge our world. 03:30 But in spite of all the money spent, 03:32 in spite of all the science employed, 03:35 the biosphere wasn't the solution to the problems 03:39 facing our world. 03:41 So what is? 03:43 Now, let's be honest, not negative, not cynical, 03:47 but honest. 03:49 World leaders have been trying to fix our planet for... 03:53 well, to be honest, for not very long at all. 03:56 But even though most people have figured out 03:58 it's probably not best that we conduct world wars 04:01 every few decades, no one's under the illusion 04:04 that we have peace in the world, 04:06 for the simple fact that...we don't. 04:09 There have been many attempts to bring peace to the Middle East, 04:12 but peace is as elusive as it's ever been. 04:15 You don't have to be any kind of environmentalist 04:17 to realize that there are some real issues with the planet. 04:21 Something called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch 04:25 floats between California and Hawaii. 04:28 It's made up of a gargantuan amount of plastic waste. 04:33 No one thinks that's not a bad thing. 04:36 But if you think that's bad, 04:38 it's said that there are five zones like it 04:41 in the world's oceans, 04:42 where plastic is accumulating in mind-boggling amounts. 04:46 We're facing problems we just don't have solutions for: 04:49 pandemics--and there have been several in recent years-- 04:53 terrorism, major health problems like suicide and depression 04:57 and diabetes and cancer and heart disease. 05:00 Now, I'm gonna tell you there is a solution. 05:03 It's the ultimate remedy. 05:06 And it isn't as far away as you might think. 05:09 Here's what Jesus said in John 14:1-3. 05:14 "Let not your heart be troubled; 05:17 "you believe in God, believe also in me. 05:21 "In my Father's house are many mansions; 05:24 "if it were not so, I would have told you. 05:27 "I go to prepare a place for you. 05:30 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, 05:33 "I will come again and receive you to myself; 05:36 that where I am, there you may be also." 05:40 Now, don't get me wrong. 05:41 I'm not suggesting nothing can be done or nothing 05:44 should be done to alleviate the problems facing the world. 05:47 Far from it. 05:49 But if you're looking for solutions, 05:51 there's no question that there's only one place 05:53 to find a solution for what ails our world, 05:56 and that's the return of Jesus. 06:01 Georgetown University reports that 65 million people die 06:06 each year in the world. 06:08 That's 178,000 every day, 06:12 7,425 each hour, 06:15 and 120 people a minute. 06:18 In the United States, 2.6 million people die a year. 06:22 That's 7,123 each day, 06:26 297 an hour, 06:28 5 people a minute, 06:30 1 every 12 seconds. 06:32 What are you going to do to end that? 06:35 Nothing. 06:36 In fact, patient safety experts at Johns Hopkins University 06:40 claim that 250,000 people die every year in the United States 06:45 due to medical errors. 06:48 That's roughly 1 every 2 minutes. 06:51 But even if people live longer, they're still gonna die. 06:55 We simply can't stop it. 06:57 Cemeteries are filling up. 07:00 But look with me; here's the fix. 07:02 Revelation 21:4 says, 07:04 "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; 07:09 "and there shall be no more death, 07:12 "neither sorrow, nor crying, 07:14 "neither shall there be any more pain: 07:17 for the former things are passed away." 07:20 How about that? No more death. 07:24 If it seems impossible to imagine, 07:26 that's because it's all we've ever known. 07:29 But one day, no more death, no more funerals or funeral songs, 07:35 no more burials, they simply won't happen. 07:39 And can we be sure of that? 07:41 Oh, yes, we can. 07:42 First Corinthians 15:26 says, 07:45 "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." 07:49 Death will be gone one day. 07:51 Right now there are people sitting 07:53 in hospital waiting rooms hoping to hear some good news 07:56 from a physician or a nurse. 07:58 There are people getting news all the time 07:59 that a loved one is now on hospice care. 08:02 Hey, thank God for hospice workers. 08:04 They're some of the kindest, most patient people 08:06 I've ever met. 08:07 But, but one day, they're going to be out of a job. 08:11 One day, emergency room physicians, funeral directors, 08:15 ambulance drivers, paramedics, coroners, 08:19 they're all going to be out of work. 08:21 So what is it that's going to put hospitals and nursing homes 08:24 and clinics out of business? 08:27 I'll tell you in just a moment. 08:29 ♪[music swells and ends]♪ 08:38 >>Announcer: Important life events 08:39 bring great changes in our lives. 08:41 And the second coming of Jesus 08:43 is the biggest event of our lives. 08:45 You can share in this special moment. 08:47 Our free offer today is "The Second Coming of Jesus." 08:50 To receive this free study guide, 08:52 call 800-253-3000 08:55 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 08:58 Learn what the Bible says about the second coming of Jesus. 09:02 Call 800-253-3000 09:05 or visit iiwoffer.com. 09:09 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 09:11 One day, every doctor alive is gonna be out of a job, 09:17 every last one. 09:19 The same is true for firefighters and nurses 09:22 and EMTs. 09:23 There'll be no military, no 911 operators, no police. 09:28 So what's going to happen to cause that? 09:31 Look with me at 1 Thessalonians, chapter 4; 09:34 we'll start in verse 15: 09:36 "For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, 09:40 "that we which are alive and remain unto the coming 09:43 "of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 09:47 "For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven 09:50 "with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, 09:53 "and with the trump of God: 09:54 "and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 09:58 "then we which are alive and remain 10:00 "shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, 10:03 "to meet the Lord in the air: 10:05 "and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 10:08 Wherefore comfort one another with these words." 10:11 The great truth of the Bible is that one day 10:15 Jesus is gonna return to this world. 10:18 And it isn't gonna happen tomorrow, 10:19 but it is going to happen-- and we would say soon. 10:24 I'll tell you in a moment why we know that. 10:26 But let's consider what the return of Jesus 10:28 means to the world. 10:30 A moment ago I showed you that the Bible says 10:32 that after Jesus comes back, there'll be no more death. 10:36 It also said no more sorrow or crying or pain. 10:40 Think about that! 10:42 The things that cause you sorrow, what are they? 10:45 Well, there'll be no more loss when Jesus returns, 10:48 nothing to make you cry, no unkindness, 10:51 no, no isolation, no rejection, and there'll be no pain. 10:56 So there'll be no more backache or arthritis pain 10:58 or sore throats or headaches, 11:00 for the simple fact that Jesus is going to return to this world 11:05 and eradicate sin and everything sin causes. 11:09 It'll cease to exist. 11:12 And when Jesus returns, 11:13 there's going to be a reunion like you've never imagined. 11:16 Think about it: seeing family again-- 11:18 a spouse, parents, grandparents, children, 11:22 siblings, friends. 11:25 What a day! 11:27 Writing to the church in Corinth, Paul wrote, 11:30 "Behold, I shew you a mystery; 11:33 "we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 11:36 "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: 11:40 "for the trumpet shall sound, 11:42 "and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, 11:45 "and we shall be changed. 11:47 "For this corruptible must put on incorruption, 11:49 "and this mortal must put on immortality. 11:53 "So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, 11:55 "and this mortal shall have put on immortality, 11:58 "then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, 12:02 "'Death is swallowed up in victory.' 12:04 'O death, where is thy sting? 23:44 Or are you simply using them for your own benefit? 23:48 People who are serious about honoring God 23:50 will lay it all on the altar. 23:52 They'll recognize that what they have was loaned to them by God 23:56 and that they're only managers, 23:58 stewards of the blessings that God has given. 24:01 It's important to remember that. 24:04 And there's a third parable in Matthew 25, 24:06 the one where Jesus tells people that they fed Him, 24:10 clothed Him, gave Him something to drink, 24:13 took Him into their homes, 24:14 visited Him while He was in prison. 24:17 Jesus calls them the sheep, and He says, 24:21 "Come, you blessed of my Father, 24:23 "inherit the kingdom prepared for you 24:26 from the foundation of the world." 24:28 Matthew 25:34. 24:30 Those who refused to do those things, 24:33 Jesus says they are goats. 24:36 They're not ready to enter His eternal kingdom, 24:38 and they gave evidence that they weren't converted 24:42 by the way they treated others. 24:45 When you receive the Holy Spirit into your life, 24:48 when your lamp is filled with oil, 24:50 God's presence fills your life, and this will impact you. 24:55 Your talents will be consecrated to God. 24:58 You'll have a heart that sees Jesus in others 25:01 and ministers to them and to Him. 25:05 God wants to transform your life. 25:07 He does that through the presence of Jesus in your life. 25:11 This is why Paul described the mystery of the gospel 25:14 as "Christ in you, the hope of glory" 25:17 in Colossians 1:27. 25:19 When you're born again, when you accept Jesus as your Savior, 25:24 when you surrender your life to Him, 25:27 you can have the confidence that the blessed hope 25:31 is going to be blessed for you. 25:33 Jesus is coming back soon. 25:36 We don't have time to waste. 25:38 You want to be ready. 25:40 God wants you to be ready. 25:42 Surrender your heart to Him now, 25:45 and you've got everything to look forward to. 25:50 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 25:52 exists because of the kindness of people just like you. 25:55 To support this international life-changing ministry, 25:58 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 26:02 You can send your tax-deductible gift 26:04 to the address on your screen, 26:05 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 26:09 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 26:12 Our number again is 800-253-3000, 26:16 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 26:21 >>John Bradshaw: Let's pray together now. 26:22 Our Father in heaven, we want to tell You right now 26:25 that we want to be ready for the return of Jesus. 26:28 We want to live in the hope of His soon return 26:32 and know that when Jesus comes back, 26:34 we are gonna be with Him and with You forever. 26:38 Now, friend, you know the way to readiness. 26:40 It's faith in Jesus, accepting Him into your heart, 26:43 allowing Jesus to live His life in you 26:47 so that not our will but His will is done. 26:50 Friend, can you make that surrender right now? 26:52 If you can, would you lift your heart up to God? 26:55 Would you pray, "Heavenly Father, 26:56 take my life and make it Yours. Jesus, live in my heart"? 27:01 Friend, if you can pray that prayer right now, 27:03 then you can face the future 27:04 knowing that when Jesus comes back, 27:06 eternity stretches before you, 27:09 and that you'll be with Jesus forever and ever and ever. 27:13 So, Father, we're gonna alter that prayer a little bit. 27:16 We started by saying we want to be ready, 27:18 and now we say thank You 27:20 for the reality of readiness for heaven. 27:24 We look forward to Jesus coming back. 27:25 Let that day come soon. 27:27 We pray with John, who wrote the book of Revelation and said, 27:30 "Even so, come, Lord Jesus!" 27:34 And we pray in Jesus' name, amen. 27:38 Thank you so much for joining me. 27:39 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 27:41 Until then, remember: 27:43 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 27:48 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 27:53 ♪[dramatic theme music]♪ 28:24 ♪[music ends]♪♪ |
