00:23 Twins! Double trouble-- or a doublble blessing.
00:26 Twins are a marvel.
00:28 Three percent of pregnanes result in twins,
00:31 and there are mo twins being born now
00:33 than there were a generaon ago.
00:35 Identical twins, ao known as monozygotic twins,
00:39 ppen when a single egg is fertilized and then didivides.
00:42 And they're always the sasame gender.
00:45 Nonidenticalal twins, dizygotic twins,
00:48 comento existence when two separate eggs are fertilizized
00:52 and implanted in the womb.
00:54 Conjoined ins are born physically connected
00:56 to each other.
00:57 The embryo only partiay separates,
01:00 so two fetuses devevelop joined together.
01:03 There are astronautwins,
01:05 sporting tns,
01:07 billionaire twins.
01:09 There are twin towers and twtwin peaks and twin mattresses.
01:13 But wewe're looking at, at actual twins.
01:16 One famous twins sry is that of the "Jim twins"
01:19 who were separated at birth,
01:21 as c chronicled by Dr. Nancy Segal in her book "Ewined Lives."
01:26 They lived completely separate lives
01:28 until theyey were reunited when they were almost 40 yes old.
01:32 Adopted by different famils, they grew up 40 miles apart.
01:36 Both families namedd the boys James.
01:39 And they both went by Jim.
01:41 They gave their pepet dogs the same name.
01:44 They married women who had the same ne--
01:47 not just once, b but twice.
01:49 They both had a n and gave them the same name,
01:53 first and middle.
01:55 They both drove Chevrolet cars.
01:57 They even vacaoned at the same beach in Florida.
02:01 Of course, the Jims weren't the same in n every respect,
02:04 but ththat's a lot of similarities.
02:07 The first twins in t the Bible show up around 1800 BC.
02:11 And they weren't just a mamarvel; they were a miracle.

02:17 We're continuing our ongoing serieses
02:19 "Great Character of the Bible,"
02:21 and we're looking at the life of a biblical twin, Jacob.
02:26 Jacob and Esau were the in sons of Isaac and Rebekah.
02:30 God had promised their grgrandfather Abraham
02:33 that through him "the earth [would] belessed."
02:36 OnOne of the twins would be the line through whi
02:39 the Chririst Child would be born.
02:42 But these boys were not alike.e.
02:44 They we as different as sunshine and rain.
02:48 Esau w was a hunter, while Jacob was more of a homebo.
02:52 And their differences were demonstrat in their choices.
02:55 One yieldehis life to God, and one did not.
02:59 Anin their experiences we see salvation and redempmption.
03:02 We s failure and dysfunction.
03:04 Anwe see the goodness and mercy and justice of Godod.
03:08 Isaac was the son of Abraham.
03:11 He married Rebekah, o couldn't have children.
03:14 Now, the inability to have childrenen can be a real burden.
03:18 Most couples who wanant children can conceive.
03:21 But roughly 1 in 10 men and women
03:23 are affected by y infertility.
03:25 So what Rebekah was facingwas something that,
03:28 at least today, isn't especially rare
03:31 and shouldn't carry any sort of stig.
03:34 But Rebekah's casese was different.
03:37 It was known that the Messiah would come from AbAbraham's line
03:41 through Isaac.
03:43 Rebekah had to conceive, or there'd be no Messiah.
03:47 In this s case, Rebekah's infertility was an opportuty
03:51 for God to interve and to reveal that His hand
03:54 was on heaven's plan for the woworld.
03:58 Genenesis 25:21 says,
04:00 "Now Isaacac pleaded with the Lord for his wife,
04:02 "because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea,
04:06 and Rebekah his wife conceiveded."
04:09 But Rebekah feared for her r pregnancy.
04:12 It seemed things weren't gogoing well.
04:14 "But the children struggle together within her;
04:16 "and she said, 'If all is well, , why am I like this?'
04:21 "So e went to inquire of the Lord.
04:23 "And the Lord said to her:r: 'Two nations are in your womb,
04:27 "'two peoples shall be separated from yr body;
04:30 "'one people shall be stronger than the other,
04:33 and the olr shall serve the younger.'"
04:36 Twins!
04:38 "And the first came out red.
04:40 "He was like a hairy garment all over;
04:42 "so they called his name Esau. Afterward s brother came out,
04:46 "and his hand took hold ofof Esau's heel;
04:49 so his name was called Jacob."
04:52 It's a as though these boys came out fighting.
04:55 They were fighting in their mother's womb.
04:57 Now, there's something we nd to remember
04:59 in order to understand ththe drama in this story.
05:02 It was tradition that the firstbororn son became heir
05:05 to his fatr's property.
05:08 But he not only inherited a double portion
05:10 of his father's wealth; ; he was also designated to be
05:14 the spiritual leader ofhe family.
05:17 Th was a big deal.
05:19 The elder son was obligated to dote his life to God
05:23 and live accccording to the will of God.
05:27 But even though Esau s the rightful heir
05:29 to Isaac's fortunes and the spirual leader
05:31 of the nt generation, that didn't mean much to him,
05:35 esespecially the spiritual leader part.
05:39 He'd heard all aut God,
05:40 but at knowledge didn't change his heart.
05:44 In fact, Hebrews2:16 describes Esau
05:47 as a "profane person...,
05:50 who for one morsel of [meat] soldld his birthright."
05:54 Jacob, however, didn't care as much abt this fortune
05:56 as he did abouthe spiritual blessings
05:58 handeded down to the firstborn.
06:01 He'd been told by s mother that God would use him
06:04 to lead the stronger nation.
06:06 But instead of waitingng on God to bring about His plan,
06:10 Jacob decided to help God along.
06:13 You u know, that never works.
06:16 God has His own timing, and when we inrfere with that,
06:20 we spoil God's perfect plan and make troublele for ourselves.
06:27 This is at happened.
06:28 One day Esau went hunting, evideny without any success.
06:32 He c came home starving, and he saw Jacob sittinby the fire
06:35 stirring a pot of red lentils.
06:38 You can imagine how gooda pot of lentils
06:39 cooked with onion and gagarlic smelled to hungry Esau.
06:44 And d "Esau said to Jacob, 'Please feed me
06:46 "with that same d stew, for I am weary.' ... But Jacob said,
06:51 "'Sell me your birthght as of this day.' And Esau said,
06:54 "'Look, I am about to o die; so what is this birthright to me?'
06:59 "Then n Jacob said, 'Swear to me as of this day.'
07:02 "So he swo to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
07:06 "And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentntils;
07:11 "then he ate and drank arose, and went his way.
07:15 Thus Esau despised his birthrightht."
07:18 Esau d disqualified himself to be the spiritual leer
07:22 or priest of the family by what he hadone.
07:25 In fact, hisife demonstrated
07:26 thatat God wasn't his chief concern.
07:29 He later marrieded not one but two Hittite women, heathen wom.
07:33 That was well outside what was expected from oror even permitted
07:37 for one upon whom the birthright rted.
07:39 Selling his spiritual blessing
07:43 Without even thinking about showed how little what he had jujust given away, he respecteded God.
07:47 Esau said goodbye and left.
07:50 And Jacob--Jacob ran ahead ofod's providence,
07:54 just as Abraham d in fathering Ishmael.
07:59 But while we're lookingat Esau's folly,
08:02 we can't overlook the fact
08:04 that Jacob does not come out of this smelling l like roses.
08:07 Jacob had a dark, ceitful streak.
08:11 We look at that in just a moment.

08:56 Jacob basically indled Esau out of the birthright.
09:00 Jacob coveted the birthrigight.
09:02 And d knowing Esau was desperately hungry
09:04 and that Esau would've done justbout anything for food
09:06 at tt time, he took advantage of not only his brother'r's hunger
09:10 but also his carelesessness about spiritual things,
09:13 and he bought the birthrig from him.
09:16 Esau made a a declaration:
09:18 "I don't really care about t this stuff."
09:21 But Jacob mamade a declaration, too:
09:23 "I can be a lowlife when I wanna be."
09:26 And that wasn't the only time Jacob was preped to stoop low
09:30 in order t to get what he wanted.
09:36 I'm now old, and I don't know Years later, Isaac how much lononger I'll live. called Esau ansaid,
09:40 So "take your...bow, anand go...[hunting]"
09:42 and make some of that food I like smuch--
09:46 seems likely that they would've eaten together-r--
09:48 "that my soul may bless you before I die."
09:53 Isaac didn know that Rebekah was in the shadows listening..
09:57 She prefererred Jacob and wanted to see God's will don
10:01 that Jacobould receive the birthright.
10:04 As soon as Esau left, she hurried to Jacob and told him
10:07 to bringwo young goats from the herd and kill them
10:10 and cook them the same way that Esau coed venison.
10:14 She was sure that Isaac would never know the difference.
10:18 But Jacob wasn't so sure.
10:19 Esau was hairy, and Jacob was nonot.
10:22 If his father touched him, he'd figure out the deception,
10:25 and he'd be more likely to reive a curse from his father
10:28 than a blessing.
10:29 But Rebekah was s insistent.
10:31 She said, "Let your cursee be on me, my son;
10:35 only obey my v voice, and go, get them for me."
10:39 So Jacob w was in a tough placace. Does he disobey his mother,
10:43 does he outright deceive his father?
10:46 So who was in the wrong here?
10:47 Rekah for instructing Jacob to deceive his father?
10:50 Or Jacob for obeyinger and deceiving his father,
10:53 knowing full well that the truth would evtually come out?
10:56 Or do we blame Esau for being so self-cecentered
10:58 and caring so little for the e birthright?
11:01 Or maybe Isaac? If he'd simply oyed God
11:04 and given the birthright to the one GoGod intended it to go to,
11:08 this whole thing could've been avoideded.
11:11 Rebekah wantining Jacob to be Isaac's heir
11:14 coinced Jacob to put animal skins on his arms,
11:18 just in case Isaac grew suspicious.
11:21 Jacob had to have looked ridiculous,
11:25 and he musust have felt terrible for deceiving his father
11:29 so egregiously.
11:31 But the plan word. Isaac blessed Jacob, saying,
11:35 "Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you.
11:40 "Be master over ur brethren, and let your mother's sons
11:43 "bow down to you. . Cursed be everyone who curses you,
11:48 and blessed be tse who bless you!"
11:51 But no sooner had Jacob left his fatheher's presence
11:54 than Esau entered with a pot of stewew.
11:57 It didt take long to figure out what had happened.
11:59 Rebekah and Jacob had succeeded in obtaini the blessing,
12:02 but au was furious and wanted to kill his brother.
12:06 Rebekah ged Jacob to flee for his life
12:08 and go to her brother Laban.
12:10 What a mess Rebekakah found herself in.
12:12 She lost her husband's trust. She lost Esas love.
12:16 And she never saw Jacob again.
12:19 Jacob fled from the camp,
12:21 leaving behind a disappointed father, a tearfuful mother,
12:24 and a brother who wanted to kill him.
12:27 Deception never pays.
12:30 Nobody winwhen you run ahead of God.
12:35 With nothing more an a staff, Jacob had to travel on foot
12:39 hundredsds of miles through a country inhabited
12:42 by wild, rovg tribes to the home of his uncle Laban.
12:46 Compounding the physical hardship,
12:49 Jacob was humiliated,, lonely, and cast off.
12:52 He didn't know if he would ever s home again.
12:55 He had no onto talk to but God, and God listened
12:59 as His wayward son poured out h heart.
13:03 Then, exhausted, Jacob lay down on the ground
13:05 with a stone for a pillow and fell asleep.
13:10 It was then that Godid a marvelous thing
13:13 that's encouraged people like JaJacob down through the years.
13:17 He gave him a vision of a a bright and shining ladder;
13:20 its base rested on the earth
13:23 while the top reached all the way to hven.
13:26 Angels were ascending and descending on n the ladder,
13:29 and above it sat the Lord.
13:32 Jacob heard God's voice saying,
13:35 "I am the Lord God of Abraham yourather,
13:38 "and the God of Isaac; the land o on which you lie
13:41 I will give to you and your descendants."
13:44 He then went on to reaeassure this lonely wanderer
13:47 at through him all the earth would bebe blessed.
13:51 It would be through his linee that Christ would be born.
13:55 And He reassured Jacob:
13:56 "'Behold, I am with you anand will keep you wherever you go,
14:00 "'and will bring you backck to this land;
14:02 "'for I will not leave youou
14:03 "u"until I have done what I have spoken to you.'
14:06 "Thehen Jacob awoke from his sleep and [he] said
14:08 'Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did n not know it.'"
14:18 You can be at your absolute that God is right there with You know, this you, encouragingng you to look up. lowest, and yeyet you can know showus something.
14:23 That ladder represented Jes,
14:24 who me to earth to connect this planet with heaven.
14:28 Angels are cstantly going up and down from heaven to earth
14:32 and from eararth to heaven on our behalf.
14:37 God has not forsaken His people. And He hasn't forsaken you.
14:39 HeHe's the same God today that He was to Jacob
14:42 All you have to do is come to Himbroken and weary.
14:46 Pour out to Him your fears, your heartache and your sins.
14:50 And He will forgive you.
14:52 Jacob felt God's presence strongly in that place
14:55 that he exclaimed,
14:57 "This is none other than the hou of God,
15:01 and thisis is the gate of heaven!"
15:04 Now, consider this. Jacob haddone a truly lousy thing.
15:10 He collaboted with his mother in deception.
15:13 He swindled his brother,
15:15 and he coldheartedly lied to his fathther, taking advantage
15:19 of his fatather's advanced age and his father's blindne.
15:23 That's low.
15:26 But God didn't't cast him off.
15:28 Kning Jacob was truly repentant,
15:30 d renewed His covenant with him:
15:32 "I am with you and will keepep you wherever you go,
15:34 and will bring you back to this land."
15:36 Genesis 285.
15:38 I tell you, God is gracious and fororgiving.
15:42 This doesn't mean anyone should be blasé é about sin.
15:45 MeMercy shouldn't lead you to be presumptuous.
15:48 Jacob paid an enormous price for his sin,
15:51 but God was forgivining.
15:54 And just as He was willing to forgive Jacob,,
15:57 whout-and-out deceived his loving father,
16:01 you know thahat God is willing to forgive you and restore y.
16:06 Jacob filly arrived at a well
16:08 and found that the shepherds there e were from Haran.
16:11 That was where Abrahaham began his long journey--
16:13 from Haran to Canaan.
16:16 The shepheherds knew Laban, Abraham's nephew,
16:18 and troduced Jacob to a beautiful young woman.
16:22 Many years before, h his mother Rebekah met someone
16:24 at this very same wellll and left home to marry Isaac.
16:29 And now herere was Rebekah's son.
16:32 History was about to be repeat--

16:40 Thfirst seven years of labor was to earn the hand of f Rachel.
16:44 The Bible says his love for Rachel was so great
16:47 that those seven years seemed to him like "a w days."
16:50 But Laban deceived t the deceiver

23:01 "s"such as never was since there was a nation, ev to that time.
23:05 "And at that time your people shall be delivered,
23:08 every one who is found written n in the book."
23:10 Daniel 12:1.
23:12 Which suggests to me that even in the great coconflicts
23:16 soon to come to this world,
23:18 if you jusust hang on to Jesus by faith,
23:21 He's gonna see you through.
23:23 FoFor 20 years Jacob had struggled with the guilt
23:25 of his deception and the ar of losing his life.
23:28 He obtained a victory that night
23:30 en he finally made the Lord his total dependencece.
23:34 And that's whatrials coming to the world call us to exercise:
23:37 total dependence o on the Lord.
23:40 Jacob and Esau were reconciled. That was miracle in itself.
23:44 The Bible says, "Esau ran to meet him, and embracaced him,
23:48 and fell on his neck and kissed him, and th wept."
23:53 You can imagine e Jacob's relief.
23:55 I can imagine Jacob saying to himsf,
23:58 "God has been faithfulul again,
23:59 and I haven't deserved y of His blessings."
24:02 Jacob and Esau buried eir father together.
24:06 That word "togetether" paints such a beautiful picture in my mi:
24:09 twin brothers s who once hated each other now side by side,
24:14 regretting the past, but looking forward toto the future.
24:19 Their story illurates how broken relationships
24:21 can be mended and restored by the grace of a loving God.
24:27 It also illustrates how your choices
24:29 determine your course inin life.
24:32 Both E Esau and Jacob had been instructed
24:35 in the knowledge of God,
24:36 and both were ee to walk in His commandments.
24:39 ThThe decision to follow God has eternal conseqnces.
24:44 The decision to walk apart from God
24:47 also has eternal consesequences.
24:50 God extends the invitatation to follow Him.
24:54 He says in Jososhua 24:15,
24:56 "Choose you this day whom [you] will serve.
25:00 Jacob becamesrael,
25:02 which means sothing like "a prince of God"
25:05 or "he rules with God."
25:08 Jacob's 12 sons becameme the progenitors
25:11 ofhe 12 tribes of Israel.
25:13 Jacob wasn't the pererfect man,
25:15 but theneither was his grandfather,
25:18 and the Bible calls him "faithful Abrahaham."
25:22 Jacob, who bame Israel, a twin, a miracle birth,
25:28 and a lifefe of faith.
25:31 How is it with you? Which Jacob do you rate to?
25:34 The man of faith w who trusted God, who repented,
25:37 who was s chosen by God to produce a great nation?
25:40 Or do you relate better to the faulty Jacob, the conniver,
25:44 the calculating Jacob?
25:46 There's a littlele or, or maybe a lot of that in everyone.
25:49 We're all faulty.
25:51 But ifif you are flawed Jacob, you can be victoriouIsrael.
25:57 Hold on to God by faith.
26:00 Refuse to let go until He blesses you.
26:03 And watcGod transform your life
26:06 and prepare you for eternity.
