00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:24 It was a remarkable and very complicated story. 00:28 Two days after a baby girl was born in a hospital in Capetown, 00:32 South Africa, a woman dressed in a nurse's uniform 00:36 took the baby while the infant's mother was sleeping. 00:40 For years the little girl's parents tried to find her, 00:43 and they lived with the uncertainty of not knowing 00:45 where she was, or whether she was dead or alive. 00:49 Even after they had another daughter, they celebrated 00:51 the birthday of their missing girl every year. 00:54 But a fascinating thing happened. 00:56 Seventeen years after their first daughter was kidnapped, 01:00 their second daughter became friends 01:03 with an older girl at school. 01:05 People noticed the girls looked remarkably similar. 01:09 And when the parents learned about the similarity, 01:12 they met the older girl and arranged for DNA testing 01:15 to be carried out. 01:17 The couple and their lost daughter were reunited 01:21 for the first time in nearly two decades. 01:25 Of course, unraveling the complications of it all 01:27 was not easy. 01:29 The story is told in a book, written by the young woman 01:31 at the center of it all: "Zephany: Two Mothers, 01:34 One Daughter, an Astonishing True Story." 01:37 A mystery, indefatigable searching, 01:40 careful investigation, and ultimately, a mystery solved. 01:46 The Bible can seem like that: a mystery. 01:50 I'm not referring to "For God so loved the world" 01:52 or "Love your neighbor as yourself." 01:54 The fact is an enormous amount of what is written in the Bible 01:57 is very understandable. 01:59 But there are some passages, prophecy, for example, 02:04 sometimes that can be a little complicated, 02:07 and there might be times that you wonder 02:08 why prophecy even matters. 02:11 Together, we are going to see that prophecy can be understood. 02:16 We'll see how relevant it is. And we'll learn how it answers 02:20 some of the biggest questions of them all, 02:23 including questions about the end of the world. 02:28 In the Old Testament you find a section 02:30 often referred to as "the major prophets" 02:33 and another referred to as "the minor prophets." 02:36 The major prophets are Isaiah, 02:38 Jeremiah--who wrote Jeremiah and Lamentations-- 02:42 Ezekiel, and Daniel, 02:44 while the minor prophets are Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, 02:49 Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, 02:55 Zechariah, and Malachi. 02:58 The major prophets are considered major 03:00 because the books are longer. 03:02 Now, there are other prophets in the Bible 03:04 who didn't write books. 03:06 Abraham was a prophet, as well as Agabus and Gad and Miriam 03:10 and Joshua and Deborah and, and others, 03:12 many of whom are not named. 03:14 Moses was a prophet, but the books he wrote are considered 03:18 history more than they're considered prophecy. 03:20 Now, they contain prophecy, but the chief burden of Genesis, 03:24 Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy is history. 03:27 Moses also wrote Job, considered to be a book of poetry. 03:32 Genesis is the book of beginnings. 03:34 Exodus tells the story of the Exodus, 03:37 Israel's exit from Egypt. 03:39 Leviticus deals with the priesthood 03:41 and the sanctuary services. 03:43 Numbers starts with the numbering of Israel, 03:46 then adds to what was written in Leviticus, 03:49 and traces the wanderings of Israel, 03:52 while Deuteronomy, which means "second law," 03:56 deals a lot with the laws and regulations given to Israel. 04:00 By the time you get to the major prophets, 04:02 you see the prophetic content of those books is very high. 04:07 Let's focus together on Daniel--12 chapters in all. 04:11 The first six are largely history, and the final six 04:15 are largely prophecy, but, but even the chapters 04:18 that deal with history really speak to prophecy. 04:21 In Daniel 3 there's a law passed concerning worship, 04:25 and those who wouldn't comply with that law 04:27 were sentenced to death. 04:28 Now, the book of Revelation speaks to that same idea. 04:32 Daniel, chapter 6, the story of Daniel in the lions' den 04:35 also has a last-day application. 04:39 But we're gonna start in Daniel 2--fascinating chapter-- 04:44 and then we'll build on that. 04:47 In fact, to get the context of Daniel 2, 04:50 we need to look at Daniel, chapter 1. 04:53 Jerusalem is attacked; 04:54 Daniel and others are captured and taken to Babylon. 04:57 The captives are to be fed from the king's table. 05:00 "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile 05:03 "himself with the portion of the king's meat, 05:06 "nor with the wine which he drank: 05:08 "therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs 05:10 that he might not defile himself." 05:12 That's Daniel 1, verse 8. 05:14 He requested that he and his friends be provided 05:17 with healthy food, and water instead of wine. 05:21 That was an act of real faith. 05:24 You don't want to insult the king of Babylon, 05:27 and if the health of those boys had suffered, 05:29 the man tasked with taking care of them 05:31 would have been in real trouble. 05:34 But God blessed Daniel and his friends for their faithfulness. 05:38 Verse 17 says, 05:40 "As for these four children, God gave them knowledge 05:43 "and skill in all learning and wisdom: 05:46 and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams." 05:51 It's always better to honor God. 05:55 "And the king communed with them; 05:56 "and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, 06:00 "Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. 06:04 "And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, 06:07 "that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better 06:11 "than all the magicians and astrologers 06:14 that were in all his realm." 06:15 Daniel 1, verses 19 and 20. 06:18 The young men honored God with their bodies, 06:22 and God blessed them spiritually. 06:25 With that background, we go to Daniel, chapter 2. 06:30 In Daniel 2, the king, Nebuchadnezzar, 06:33 had a stunning dream. It was so striking it woke him up. 06:38 He believed the gods were talking to him, 06:41 but he couldn't remember what the dream was. 06:45 He asked his counselors to tell him what he dreamed 06:47 and what it meant. 06:49 What unfolded was an interesting exchange: 06:53 "'O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, 06:57 "and we will give the interpretation.' 07:00 "The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, 07:01 "'My decision is firm: if you do not make known the dream to me, 07:05 "'and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces, 07:09 "'and your houses shall be made an ash heap. 07:11 "'However, if you tell the dream and its interpretation, 07:14 "'you shall receive from me gifts, rewards, and great honor. 07:18 "Therefore tell me the dream and its interpretation.' 07:21 "They answered again and said, 'Let the king tell his servants 07:25 "the dream, and we will give its interpretation.' 07:28 "The king answered and said, 07:29 "'I know for certain that you would gain time, 07:31 "'because you see that my decision is firm: 07:33 "'if you do not make known the dream to me, 07:35 "'there is only one decree for you! 07:37 "'For you have agreed to speak lying and corrupts words 07:40 "'before me till the time has changed. 07:43 "'Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know 07:45 "that you can give me its interpretation.' 07:47 "The Chaldeans answered the king, and said, 07:49 "'There is not a man on earth who can tell the king's matter; 07:52 "'therefore no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things 07:57 "'of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. 07:59 "'It is a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is 08:02 "'no other who can tell it to the king except the gods, 08:06 "whose dwelling is not with flesh.' 08:08 "For this reason the king was angry and very furious, 08:12 and gave the command to destroy all the wise men of Babylon." 08:17 That's Daniel 2, verses 4 through 12. 08:20 What unfolds is a prophecy that is foundational 08:24 to end-time Bible prophecy. 08:27 But first, Daniel has to get out of a jam. 08:31 He's just been sentenced to death. 08:34 What do you do when you're innocent 08:37 and the executioner knocks on your door? Gather the shields! 13:15 "The Lord has raised up the spirit of the kings 13:18 "of the Medes. For His plan is against Babylon to destroy it, 13:22 "because it is the vengeance of the Lord, 13:25 the vengeance for His temple." 13:26 You find that in Jeremiah 51 in verse 11. 13:29 After Medo-Persia, Greece came into power on the world stage, 13:33 with the footprint of the kingdom getting even bigger 13:36 before Greece was conquered by Rome, 13:40 which existed as a power until 476 A.D. 13:44 These were seriously influential kingdoms. 13:48 The Babylonians gave us the 360-degree circle. 13:51 They gave us 60 seconds to a minute 13:53 and 60 minutes to an hour. 13:55 They adopted a 12-month calendar, 13:57 each month with 30 days, 13:59 and, religiously, they were idol worshipers and sun worshipers. 14:04 It's said that the Persians invented algebra-- 14:07 great for science, not so cool with high school students. 14:11 The impact of the Greek empire is still felt today 14:14 through philosophy, astronomy, medicine, mathematics, 14:19 and architecture. 14:21 The New Testament was written in Greek. 14:23 And Rome's influence is seen through architecture, 14:27 government, law, and religion. 14:32 Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, 14:35 Rome would divide, 14:36 as represented by the feet and toes in Daniel 2, 14:39 part of clay and part of iron, 14:41 indicating that the influence of the iron monarchy of Rome 14:45 would be felt long after Rome itself was gone. 14:50 So Rome divides, and then... Simple. 20:20 So what kingdoms are represented by these beasts? 20:23 The fact is we already know. 20:25 We just read that the fourth beast is the fourth kingdom, 20:28 and we know already that that is Rome. 20:31 But let's take this methodically. 20:33 Verse 4: "The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: 20:37 "I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, 20:39 "and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand 20:42 upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it." 20:45 Interesting. Three of the kingdoms 21:33 it destroyed on its way to power. 21:35 Verse 6: "After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, 21:40 "which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; 21:44 the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it." 21:49 That's Greece, which rapidly conquered the world of its day 21:54 and divided into four nations, represented by those four heads. 21:59 Verse 7 focuses on Rome: 22:02 "After this I saw in the night visions, and behold 22:06 "a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, 22:09 "and strong exceedingly; 22:11 "and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, 22:15 "and stamped the residue with the feet of it: 22:18 "and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; 22:22 and it had ten horns." 22:25 The iron teeth correspond with the legs of iron in Daniel 2. 22:30 It's the same kingdom, 22:32 and you'll see it's extremely powerful. 22:36 Now look in verse 8: 22:38 "I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them 22:42 "another little horn, before whom 22:45 "there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: 22:48 "and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, 22:52 and a mouth speaking great things." 22:55 So who's this? Well, it comes out of Rome. 23:00 Some have said this is Antiochus Epiphanes, a Roman king-- 23:03 except that he doesn't come after Rome is gone 23:06 but during the reign of Rome. 23:08 And in Daniel 8 it says that this little horn 23:11 is "exceeding great," which Antiochus definitely was not. 23:17 During the Protestant Reformation, 23:19 people like Luther and Zwingli and Calvin and Farrell, 23:22 and later John Wesley, identified that little horn 23:27 as the Vatican City, the Papacy, 23:29 which was exceedingly great in the world. 23:32 And, of course, it did spring out of the Roman Empire. 23:36 Now, after the sequence of kingdoms, Daniel 7:21 says, 23:40 "I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, 23:44 "and prevailed against them; until the Ancient of Days came, 23:49 "and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High; 23:53 and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom." 23:56 So you see, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, 24:00 an intervening time, and then Jesus returns. 24:05 But let's go back to Daniel 2. 24:07 This is a verse we haven't looked at yet. 24:10 It's verse 34: 24:12 "You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, 24:15 "which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, 24:19 and broke them [to] pieces." 24:21 Verse 44: "And in the days of these kings the God of heaven 24:26 "will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; 24:29 "and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; 24:32 "it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, 24:36 and it shall stand forever." 24:41 So I want you to notice: 24:42 The prophecies in Daniel lead us directly to the return of Jesus. 24:48 We don't know precisely when that will happen, 24:51 but the signs point to that time coming soon. 24:54 So, the prophecies say Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, 25:01 Rome divides, and all that has happened. 25:06 So where are we in the stream of Bible prophecy? 25:09 If you're looking at the Daniel 2 image, 25:12 we'd have to be right down in the toenails, 25:16 very near the return of Jesus. 25:18 Both chapters 2 and 7 of Daniel suggest that. 25:23 And look at this remarkable statement in Daniel 2:45. 25:26 After interpreting Nebuchadnezzar's dream-- 25:28 which parallels Daniel 7, remember--Daniel says, 25:32 "The dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure." 25:38 Certain and sure--that's encouragement for you. 25:43 When the road seems long, when your weakness 25:46 gets the better of you, when life is tough 25:49 and you're not sure where to turn, God says, 25:52 this dream is real.
