Maybe you, too, would have leaned forward, 01:10 waiting for something to happen. 01:14 Then you would have heard what you came to hear: 01:17 [rapping sounds] rappings on the floor or the furniture, 01:20 sounds of knocking that didn't appear to come from anywhere, 01:24 that frankly seemed otherworldly, 01:26 that spelled out messages, or sometimes even rapped 01:30 in the rhythm of well-known tunes of the time. 01:33 What were these knockings? 01:35 The Fox sisters claimed they were spirits. 01:40 ♪[spooky music]♪ 01:41 The story of the Fox sisters begins in Hydesville, New York, 01:44 where Maggie and Kate Fox lived as girls in a small home 01:48 with their parents. 01:49 The home, they claimed, was haunted, 01:52 and the girls often heard knockings on the walls. 01:55 They began to invite people over to the house 01:57 to demonstrate what was happening. 01:59 As they did this, the girls began to gain notoriety. 02:03 Eventually they were invited to another home 02:06 to see if the knockings would happen in other places. 02:09 They did! Or at least they seemed to. 02:12 Then the girls began to perform in halls and theaters. 02:15 Their popularity exploded, and Maggie and Kate 02:19 were then joined by their older sister, Leah. 02:22 They took to the road, 02:23 performing in cities all over the United States. 02:26 Everywhere they stopped their séances drew people 02:29 from all walks of life. 02:32 Why were people so enticed by the knocking sounds? 02:35 Well, that's because what the Fox sisters offered 02:37 was more than just a mere night's entertainment. 02:41 It was, they claimed, a glimpse, 02:43 an open door to the other side. 02:47 Add to that the fact that the communications 02:49 the sisters claimed to receive from the spirits of the dead 02:53 often offered hope about the times. 02:56 Surely, the combination of such encouraging messages, 02:59 the intrigue of the supernatural, 03:01 and the ability to communicate with those who had died 03:04 sparked the interest of a generation. 03:07 And it was the Fox sisters' performances, 03:09 more than anything else, 03:11 that galvanized what one historian has called 03:13 "one of the greatest religious movements 03:15 of the 19th century": 03:17 American spiritualism. 03:20 This movement went beyond spirit rappings and séances, though. 03:24 Another popular attraction at the time was mesmerism. 03:29 Mesmerism had been popular in the United States 03:32 since the 1830s when Charles Poyen, 03:35 a Frenchman who practiced animal magnetism, or mesmerism, 03:40 traveled to New England and began to give talks 03:42 about his ability to heal illnesses by mesmerizing people, 03:47 a practice initiated by a man named Anton Mesmer. 03:50 Poyen could, he claimed, put his patients 03:52 in a sleep-like state or a trance and then 03:56 make magnetic passes over the body with his hands. 04:00 These actions he and others believed would rebalance 04:03 the magnetic forces that some scientists of the time thought 04:07 were in the body. 04:08 Like the Fox sisters did later on, 04:11 Poyen traveled around the United States 04:13 giving demonstrations of mesmerism. 04:16 And other mesmerists rose up to do the same. 04:19 Beyond the supposed powers of healing that practitioners 04:23 of mesmerism said their art could bring to people, 04:27 they also boasted that mesmerism allowed them 04:29 to access people's minds and could enable individuals 04:34 to act as mediums for spirits. 04:37 The stories of Charles Poyen and the Fox sisters show us 04:40 that spiritualism had its big introduction and its heyday 04:45 in the United States in the 19th century. 04:48 But it's important to note that it's nothing new. 04:51 In fact, it's been around since Bible times. 04:55 First Samuel 28 tells the story of King Saul 04:58 consulting a medium. It happened after he realized 05:02 that the Philistine army was gathering to attack Israel, 05:04 and no matter how much he prayed and asked for help 05:07 from prophets, the Lord God would not give him an answer. 05:10 In his desperation he went to see a witch in a place 05:14 called Endor, asking her to raise up the prophet Samuel, 05:17 who had died, so that Samuel could give Saul advice. 05:21 The visit did not end up helping Saul, though. 05:23 He just received the message he'd already received, 05:27 that God had taken his kingdom from him, 05:29 and it would be given to David. 05:31 Shortly after this meeting, Saul died in battle, 05:35 and everything happened as the Lord said it would. 05:39 The long shadow of spiritualism reaches into more modern times 05:43 as well. It's well known, for example, 05:45 that former first lady Nancy Reagan sought the advice 05:48 of an astrologer named Joan Quigley 05:50 throughout her husband Ronald Reagan's presidency 05:53 in the 1980s. 05:54 And today we only need to look to popular television 05:58 to see the influence of spiritualism 06:00 on our culture. [static noise and growling] 06:02 You can think of numerous television programs 06:05 which include spells and witchcraft and sorcery, 06:10 communication with the dead, and so on. 06:13 In fact, in the 21st century, 06:16 spiritualism has become even more brazen than ever before, 06:21 with television programs even discussing Satan 06:25 as a character, making him sympathetic to his viewers. 06:31 But what does God say about all of this? 06:34 About participating in séances, consulting mediums, 06:37 or being involved with witchcraft in any way? 06:41 The Bible's very clear about these practices. 06:44 In Leviticus 19:31, God says, 06:46 "Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; 06:50 do not seek after them, to be defiled by them." 06:53 Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says, 06:56 "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son 06:59 "or his daughter pass through the fire, 07:01 "or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, 07:04 "or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 07:07 "or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, 07:11 "or one who calls up the dead. 07:13 For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord." 07:17 And in the New Testament, Paul declares in Galatians, 07:19 chapter 5, that "those who practice [idolatry and sorcery] 07:24 will not inherit the kingdom of God." 07:27 In accordance with what the Bible says, 07:29 we should avoid séances and witchcraft because we know 07:33 that if we do these things, we would be dancing with the devil. 07:38 But did you know there are more subtle forms 07:41 of spiritualism that are all around us in this day and age? 07:44 And those things should be avoided, too. 07:47 We'll talk about those when we come back in just a moment. 07:50 ♪[music swells and ends]♪♪ 07:59 >>Announcer: Spiritualism, witchcraft, 08:01 and communication with the dead have become mainstream 08:04 in today's society. 08:06 What does the Bible teach us about these topics? 08:09 Our free offer today is "Charmed by the Supernatural." 08:13 To receive this free DVD, 08:14 call 800-253-3000 08:17 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 08:21 Know what the Bible says about the supernatural. 08:23 Call 800-253-3000 08:26 or visit iiwoffer.com. 08:30 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 08:32 Going to see a clairvoyant or consulting a Ouija board 08:36 are obvious, in-your-face forms of spiritualism. 08:40 But there are plenty of practices today 08:41 that may seem harmless 08:44 but are actually spiritualistic in nature. 08:46 Some of these even Christians practice with the justification 08:50 that they can bring one closer to God. 08:53 Among these practices are the use of crystals for healing 08:56 and yoga for exercise and meditation. 09:00 I spoke with a young woman raised in the Santería religion. 09:05 Really, that's voodoo. 09:07 And I asked her about her experiences and her insights 09:12 into the occult. 09:13 So, tell me, in your experience, the occult is very real. 09:16 You were involved as a younger person in, in Santería, which, 09:20 it's called voodoo in Haiti, so that's very much witchcraft. 09:24 What were the sorts of experiences that you had? 09:27 >>Tammy: So, I was baptized into it. 09:30 The, the way that it was practiced, um, 09:33 in my family was considered white magic. 09:36 Um, and so it was for protection or for, uh, 09:39 trying to gain things. 09:41 Um, I had a lot of demonic presence around me. 09:46 At the time I didn't know they were demonic presence, 09:49 most of the time. It's a well-known story. 18:40 As they journeyed deeper into the desert, 18:43 they gave way to doubt, allowing their circumstances 18:47 to dictate their attitudes towards Moses 18:50 and ultimately God Himself. 18:52 They complained at every turn. 18:55 They didn't have water. God gave them quail. 19:06 They became sick from eating it. 19:08 Really, their lack wasn't food and water; 19:12 it was trust in God to lead them, to save them. 19:16 And this became all too apparent 19:17 when God called Moses to speak with Him on Mount Sinai. 19:22 Despite the fact they'd already witnessed God's presence 19:24 in their midst through the pillar of cloud and fire 19:27 that traveled with them out of Egypt, 19:29 Exodus 20, verse 18 relates, 19:31 "Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, 19:34 "the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, 19:37 "and the mountain smoking; and when [they] saw it, 19:40 they trembled and stood afar off," even though barriers 19:43 had already been put between them and the mountain. 19:47 While Moses was talking with God and receiving 19:50 the Ten Commandments and instructions on how to build 19:53 the tabernacle, the people down below were terrified. 19:57 And the longer Moses was away, the more anxious they became. 20:02 Exodus 32, verse 1: "Now when the people saw 20:05 "that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, 20:09 "the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, 20:12 "'Come, make us gods that shall go before us; 20:16 "'for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up 20:19 "'out of the land of Egypt, 20:21 we do not know what has become of him.'" 20:23 Incredibly, Aaron did as they requested. 20:27 He instructed them to bring the gold they brought out of Egypt. 20:30 When they did, the Bible tells us that Aaron 20:33 "received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it 20:37 with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf." 20:41 The next day the people gathered to worship the calf 20:44 and make sacrifices to it. 20:46 Seeing their sin, God said to Moses, 20:48 "Go, get down!
