00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:22 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me. 00:25 Although military combat has historically been 00:27 the domain of men, 00:29 many women have seen action on the front lines. 00:32 It's said that somewhere between 400 and 750 women 00:36 fought in the Civil War, 00:39 among them, Sarah Edmonds Seelye, 00:42 who was known as Franklin Flint Thompson 00:45 when she fought in the 2nd Michigan Infantry. 00:48 Albert Cashier was actually Jennie Hodgers and fought 00:52 in more than 40 engagements for the 95th Illinois Infantry. 00:57 Red Cross founder Clara Barton discovered a soldier 01:00 she was treating following the battle of Antietam 01:02 was, to her surprise, not a man but Mary Galloway. 01:08 Women served in the Resistance movement during World War II. 01:11 Some, like Dutch woman Hannie Schaft, were executed. 01:15 While they didn't serve in combat roles 01:17 during World War II, about 350,000 American women 01:21 served with the armed forces. 01:23 The Women's Air Force Service pilots piloted planes 01:26 to locations where they'd be needed. 01:28 More than 1,000 women flew U.S. military aircraft at home. 01:33 The Women's Auxiliary Army Corps was formed in 1942. 01:37 And there was the Marine Corps Women's Reserve 01:39 and other similar reserve groups. 01:42 And of course, women worked in factories 01:44 and in countless other ways in support of the war effort. 01:47 One of the most enduring images of World War II 01:49 was the famous poster of Rosie the Riveter, 01:53 a depiction of a female factory worker. 01:56 There's another famous woman of war-- 01:59 this one a mother 02:01 caught in the middle of a long, trying conflict. 02:05 This mother at war may be the best known of all women of war. 02:10 And we find her in the book of Revelation in chapter 12. 02:16 Revelation was written by the Apostle John 02:18 when he was under house arrest on the island of Patmos, 02:22 today a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. 02:24 It's not a large island. 02:26 It's just 1/34th the size of the island of O'ahu in Hawaii. 02:32 It was there that John wrote 02:33 what became the 22 chapters of Revelation. 02:37 And right about in the middle of that book 02:39 is the chapter that deals with a woman, a mother at war. 02:44 Revelation 12 begins with John saying, 02:47 "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; 02:49 "a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, 02:53 and upon her head a crown of twelve stars." 02:57 A great sign in the heavens-- 03:01 so we need to ask ourselves whether what John saw 03:03 was something that we are to take literally, 03:07 or if he saw something that was symbolic of something else, 03:10 a representation. 03:12 You might expect this to be symbolic 03:14 seeing as Revelation is loaded with signs and symbols. 03:19 So how do you know if it's literal or symbolic? 03:22 Well, if the symbolism isn't obvious, 03:25 you let the context advise you. 03:27 This woman is clothed with the sun. 03:29 She has the moon under her feet. 03:31 She's wearing a crown, a crown of 12 stars. 03:36 So if this is a literal woman, 03:38 she'd have to be literally wearing the sun, 03:41 literally standing on the moon, and literally be wearing 03:43 a crown made out of 12 literal stars, 03:47 which doesn't make an awful lot of sense. 03:51 Well, why, then, is she presented this way? 03:53 You'll notice that she's pure; 03:55 she's wearing things of natural beauty. 03:58 Now, there's another woman, another mother in Revelation, 04:01 over in Revelation 17. She's the opposite: 04:05 colorfully attired, wearing jewels and holding a golden cup. 04:09 That woman is described as a harlot. 04:13 But our woman in Revelation 12 is described 04:15 as possessing purity, and that'll matter as we read on. 04:19 Revelation 12, verse 2: "And she being with child 04:23 cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered." 04:28 She's close to delivering her Child, and she's going to do so 04:32 after going through some real difficulty. 04:34 She's experiencing birth pains. 04:36 And now we see a great contrast: 04:39 first, the pure woman adorned with only nature itself. 04:43 While she embodies holiness, what comes next does not. 04:49 Revelation 12, verse 3: 04:51 "And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold 04:56 "a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, 05:00 and seven crowns upon his heads." 05:04 We're going to find out that this dragon is Satan. 05:07 The Bible will tell us that just six verses later 05:09 in Revelation 12, verse 9: 05:11 "And the great dragon was cast out, 05:12 "that old serpent, called the devil, and Satan, 05:14 which deceiveth the whole world." 05:17 So the pure woman is confronted by Satan himself. 05:21 And that's indicative of life in this world. 05:24 The devil despises anything that represents Jesus. 05:27 He's been working on this planet for 6,000 years 05:31 to try to erase the image of God wherever it might be seen. 05:35 This is Satan, and the Bible is connecting Satan 05:37 to the great blaspheming power of earth's last days. 05:42 That phrase "seven heads and ten horns" appears four times 05:47 in the Bible, all in Revelation: 05:49 right here in Revelation 13 and twice in Revelation 17, 05:54 in Revelation 13 it's connected to the antichrist, 05:58 so you can know that this is Satan 06:00 at his most destructive and evil. 06:03 Now, I want you to notice something. 06:05 The book of Revelation isn't written in a linear fashion. 06:08 It's not like the alphabet going from A to Z. 06:11 It'll move forward, and then it'll double back. 06:14 And that's what we see here. 06:16 After introducing us to the woman about to give birth, 06:19 we're given a picture of Satan, and that picture takes us back 06:22 to heaven before the fall of Adam and Eve. 06:26 Revelation 12, verse 4: 06:29 "And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, 06:32 "and did cast them to the earth: 06:35 "and the dragon stood before the woman 06:37 "which was ready to be delivered, 06:39 for to devour her Child as soon as it was born." 06:43 Satan deceived a third of the angels in heaven. 06:47 When he was evicted from heaven, they came together to the earth. 06:52 And you'll notice that Satan was waiting 06:54 for the birth of the Child. 06:56 Knowing the prophecies about the coming Messiah, 06:59 he was anticipating the event. 07:02 He knew his own future and the future of the world, 07:05 of the universe, 07:06 depended on this mother and the Child that she would have. 07:10 Revelation 12, verse 5: 07:12 "And she brought forth a man Child, 07:15 "who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: 07:19 and her Child was caught up unto God, and to His throne." 07:23 That's the same woman we were reading about just moments ago, 07:26 a woman who had a baby Boy, 07:27 "who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron." 07:30 This is Jesus, the One who was caught up to God 07:34 after His death on the cross. 07:37 Now, ruling with a rod of iron 07:40 shouldn't necessarily be thought of as severity. 07:44 Jesus was the embodiment of the love of God for this world. 07:48 If you said that your neighbor rules his or her family 07:50 with a rod of iron, 07:51 you might be suggesting that your neighbor is a tyrant. 07:54 Of course, Jesus is not a tyrant. 07:58 This reference is to strength and authority, 08:00 not to harshness and severity. 08:03 Jesus' scepter is a scepter of authority and justice. 08:07 And this reference points us to Jesus as the Messiah. 08:11 Recapping verses 4 and 5, we find that Satan deceived 08:15 a third of the angels in heaven and came to the earth 08:17 to destroy Jesus as soon as Jesus was born. 08:21 Satan's whole sordid existence has been dedicated to 08:25 preventing Jesus from carrying out His work of salvation. 08:30 Right after Jesus was born, Satan inspired Herod 08:34 to order the execution of not only Jesus, 08:37 but of all the infant boys in and near Bethlehem. 08:41 Satan hoped to kill Jesus 08:44 even before His ministry could get underway. 08:47 But Joseph was warned in a dream to take his family to Egypt, 08:50 where they stayed until after Herod was dead. 08:54 Clearly Satan wasn't successful in his objective. 08:59 The passage tells us Jesus 09:00 "was caught up unto God, and to His throne." 09:05 Five verses into this chapter 09:07 and you know that the plan of salvation was successful. 09:11 Jesus ascended to heaven after His death on the cross. 09:18 But who is this woman? This mother at war? 09:23 We'll find out in just a moment. 09:26 ♪[music swells and ends]♪♪ 09:35 >>Announcer 1: Discover God's plan to end the battle 09:38 between good and evil. 09:39 The return of Jesus is fast approaching. 09:42 Get today's free offer, "The Great Reset," 09:44 a DVD presentation from "The Great Reset" series 09:47 by Pastor John Bradshaw. 09:49 Call 800-253-3000 09:52 or visit us online at iiwoffer.com. 09:55 Learn how to be ready for history's greatest event, 09:58 the return of Jesus. 10:00 Call 800-253-3000 10:02 or visit iiwoffer.com. 10:06 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written. 10:09 The book of Revelation contains some fascinating symbols: 10:13 a beast that rises up out of the sea, 10:16 Jesus returning to the earth 10:17 wearing a robe that had been dipped in blood 10:20 with a name written on His robe and on His thigh, 10:23 angels flying in the midst of heaven with messages 10:26 for the entire world to hear, 10:28 and a new mother who goes to war with the devil 10:31 the moment she gives birth. 10:34 In fact, the devil is depicted as waiting for her 10:37 to give birth so he can destroy her newborn. 10:41 That's a graphic picture. 10:43 Revelation 12 is unique in the book of Revelation. 10:46 It doesn't portray a single scene or a snapshot in time. 10:51 Instead, it spans all of human history, 10:54 from Satan's rebellion in heaven 10:56 right down through history to the time of the return of Jesus. 11:00 Notice: "And there was war in heaven.... 11:04 And the great dragon was cast out." And then, 11:08 "The dragon...[made] war with the remnant of her seed," 11:11 the last of her offspring. 11:13 He expands his war. 11:16 When Satan couldn't destroy the Child, he moved in spite 11:20 and hate to destroy anyone associated with Him. 11:25 Thousands of years covered in one chapter of the Bible, 11:28 and that's because God is wanting to show us 11:30 the development of evil, the character of Satan, 11:33 who relentlessly pursues evil, 11:36 and the history of the woman and her offspring. 11:40 Let's go to verse 6. 11:41 It says the mother at war "fled into the wilderness, 11:46 "where she hath a place prepared of God, 11:48 "that they should feed her there 11:50 a thousand two hundred and threescore days." 11:54 This starts hinting at the identity of this woman. 11:59 Remember, Revelation is filled with signs and symbols. 12:04 That beast that rises up out of the sea in chapter 13? 12:07 it isn't really a dinosaur of some kind 12:09 emerging from the ocean. 12:11 That's a symbol representing something else. 12:14 Three angels in chapter 14 with messages 12:16 heard by the whole world, 12:18 those angels represent messengers taking the gospel 12:22 to the entire planet. 12:24 Revelation 20, Satan bound with a literal chain? 12:29 God doesn't restrain Satan with an actual chain 12:33 for a millennium. Those days, more than 1,000 days, 14:32 during which the woman was in the wilderness, 14:35 they're symbolic, too. 14:36 There are numerous places in Scripture 14:38 where a day is used to represent a year. 14:42 Look at Numbers 14:34 where God said to Israel 14:46 that each day the spies searched the Promised Land 14:50 would stand against them as a year. 14:52 Forty days of searching, a day for a year, 14:55 meant that they would spend 40 years in the wilderness. 15:00 In Ezekiel 4, verse 6, God tells Ezekiel that each day 15:03 in his certain situation would represent a year. 15:07 In Daniel 9, the days of the prophecy each represent a year. 15:11 That's how you get from seven days to seven years 15:15 in Daniel 9:27. 15:17 The 1,260 days mentioned in both Daniel and Revelation 15:21 apply to a longer period of time 15:24 during which the church was in the wilderness. 15:29 And look at what Jeremiah wrote: 15:31 "I have likened the daughter of Zion 15:34 to a comely and delicate woman." 15:37 That's Jeremiah 6, verse 2. 15:40 Isaiah says clearly that Zion is God's people. 15:45 In fact, several times Isaiah and Jeremiah 15:49 use the symbol of a woman when speaking of Israel. 15:52 In prophecy, a woman is a symbol used to represent God's people. 15:58 In the New Testament, Paul uses the same symbol 16:02 to represent the church when he says, 16:04 "I have espoused you to one husband, 16:07 that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ." 16:10 That's 2 Corinthians 11 in verse 2. 16:13 So when you're looking at this woman in prophecy, 16:16 the symbol is used to represent God's people down through time. 16:21 This side of the cross, the symbol represents the church. 16:26 And with the woman being pure, 16:28 you're looking at God's faithful people down through the ages. 16:33 Now, a word of caution with symbols: 16:36 It doesn't mean that every time in the Bible 16:37 that you read "day" or "woman" 16:40 that it represents a year or God's people. 16:43 The days of Creation were, were days, not years. 16:46 Jesus was not in the tomb for three years. 16:50 The woman who touched the hem of Jesus' garment? A woman. 16:54 It's in descriptive symbolic prophecy 16:57 that these terms are symbols. 17:00 So, in Revelation 12, Mary gives birth to Jesus. 17:05 But then the woman is in the wilderness-- 17:09 God's people, the church, in the wilderness. 17:14 We'll look at that in just a moment. 17:17 ♪[music swells and ends]♪♪ 17:26 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 17:28 exists because of the kindness of people just like you. 17:31 To support this international life-changing ministry, 17:34 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 17:39 You can send your tax-deductible gift 17:40 to the address on your screen, 17:41 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 17:45 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 17:48 Our number again is 800-253-3000, 17:52 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 17:56 >>John: There's something placed by God inside the human heart: 18:01 a yearning to be free. 18:02 ♪[soft orchestral music]♪ [sound of writing] 18:04 And the actions of some went beyond the page 18:07 and the lecture hall 18:09 to the tracks of something that became known as 18:12 the Underground Railroad. 18:15 [America Wilson singing] ♪ Steal away, ♪ 18:19 [creak of opening door] ♪ steal away, ♪ 18:23 ♪ steal away to Jesus. ♪ 18:30 ♪ Steal away, ♪ 18:34 ♪ steal away home. ♪ 18:39 ♪ I ain't got long to stay here. ♪♪ 18:48 >>Announcer 2: Watch "Midnight to Dawn" 18:50 on itiswritten.tv. 18:57 >>John Bradshaw: Mothers feature prominently in the Bible-- 18:59 Eve, Sarah, Rebekah, Jochebed, 19:02 Naomi, Elizabeth, Mary, 19:04 all hugely significant. 19:07 And down in the book of Revelation, 19:09 a woman clothed in white who gives birth to a Son 19:12 whose life is immediately threatened 19:14 and is saved only by a miracle of God. 19:18 Of course, Mary gave birth to that Son, 19:20 but the woman in Revelation 12 19:21 represents the history of God's people down through the ages, 19:26 culminating in a picture of the church in earth's last days. 19:30 In verse 13 we read that "the dragon"--Satan-- 19:34 "persecuted the woman which brought forth the man Child." 19:37 Verse 14 says, 19:39 "And to the woman were given two wings 19:42 "of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, 19:46 "into her place, where she is nourished 19:49 "for a time, ...times, and half a time, 19:53 from the face of the serpent." 19:55 Throughout history the persecution against God's people 19:59 has been relentless. 20:01 It was only a few hundred years ago that it was against the law 20:04 to own a Bible or to even possess a fragment of Scripture. 20:09 The Bible-believing church was ruthlessly persecuted. 20:12 During the Dark Ages, the Huguenots of France, 20:15 the Waldenses of northern Italy, 20:17 and many others were slaughtered in great numbers. 20:23 The Bible translator William Tyndale was burned at the stake 20:26 not because he was a criminal of any kind 20:29 but because he translated the Bible.
