Thanks for joining me. 00:23 Some things take time. 00:26 That pie you put in the oven? 00:28 That's going to take 30-40 minutes to bake. 00:30 No matter what you do, you need to give it half an hour or so 00:34 or it's not going to be what you want it to be. 00:37 There's a process you have to follow. 00:39 You make the pie, you put it in a hot oven, and you wait. 00:44 These things take time. There's a process. 00:48 You hurt your knee; you have to have surgery. 00:50 The doctor tells you it's going to be six months to a year 00:53 before you can get back to normal. 00:55 You might be jogging in nine months, say, maybe six. 00:59 But you're not going to be running six or eight weeks 01:02 after damaging your ACL. That's just not going to happen. 01:06 You wish it would, but it won't. 01:08 These things take time. There's a process. 01:12 The married couple who want to have a baby 01:14 know how long they'll have to wait after conception. 01:17 Since the dawn of time, this has taken nine months. 01:22 And wishing that process could be sped up 01:25 won't change a single thing. 01:27 These things take time. There's a process. 01:32 Now, Jesus said the same thing about spiritual growth. 01:36 And understanding that is critical in a life of faith. 01:41 Look with me at Mark 4, starting in verse 26. 01:44 He said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed 01:49 "on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, 01:54 "and the seed should sprout and grow, 01:56 "he himself does not know how. 01:58 "For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, 02:03 "then the head, [and] after that the full grain in the head. 02:07 "But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in 02:10 the sickle, because the harvest has come." 02:14 Jesus is talking about spiritual growth, 02:17 and He describes that process. 02:20 A man sows seed. 02:21 The kingdom of heaven getting into you and becoming 02:24 more and more a part of you and transforming you 02:27 is like seed being planted in the ground. 02:30 Now, every year my wife and I grow a garden. 02:34 It's not going to win any prizes. 02:36 Sometimes "garden" might be too grand a word, to be honest. 02:41 We're going to get some tomatoes planted, a few other things. 02:44 We'll have sunflowers, just because we love them. 02:47 And we'll get some seeds in the ground in little starter pots, 02:50 and then we...wait. 02:53 The seed packet will typically tell you: 30 days to harvest, 02:57 60 days to harvest, 90 days to harvest. 03:01 And there are times along the way that you have 03:02 to remind yourself that, yes, one day these little things 03:06 will actually end up on your dinner table. 03:09 But you cannot speed up the process. 03:12 A tomato's probably going to take you from 60-100 days. 03:16 Jalapeños will be about 80 days. 03:18 You're not going to change that. 03:19 Now, radishes you'll get in 20-25 days, but eggplant, 03:24 more likely 120, maybe longer. 03:27 It'll depend a little bit on where you live, 03:29 but what we know is that these things take time. 03:33 There's a process. 03:35 In the Bible, Jesus spoke a lot about seeds. 03:38 And wanting to find out more about seeds, 03:40 I came to southern Missouri, 03:43 incidentally about 10 minutes or so 03:45 from where Laura Ingalls Wilder and her husband, Almanzo, 03:48 lived for 60 years after moving here from South Dakota. 03:52 I wondered if I could get some insights 03:55 into the little miracles that are seeds. 03:59 All right, Weston, so tell me something interesting 04:02 about seeds that most of us don't know. 04:06 >>Weston Adams: A lot of people don't know that a coconut 04:08 is a seed. >>John: It's a seed? 04:09 >>Weston: It's one big seed. 04:11 Another thing that people don't know is that some seeds 04:14 actually have, um, they measure temperature, 04:17 and they won't germinate 04:19 until they've had a period of cold weather 04:21 because that seed wants to know that it's going through winter 04:24 before it will sprout. 04:25 >>John: Do you notice much variation between seeds? 04:29 Perhaps the question's obvious. 04:31 This seed will function this way; 04:33 that seed will function that way. 04:35 They're not all exactly the same. 04:37 >>Weston: No, they're not. 04:38 >>John: My question, I suppose, really is, 04:40 they've been programmed differently, right? 04:42 >>Weston: Yes, very different genes, very different, um, 04:45 product when you grow-- you know, you get this 04:48 out of one seed; you get this out of another seed-- 04:51 huge variation. 04:53 And even, even within cabbages or even within this species, 04:57 you'll have large seeds; you'll have small seeds; you'll have, 05:00 you'll have red cabbages; you'll have pointed ones; 05:03 you'll have round ones; you'll have flat ones. 05:05 It's all in the, the genes that are locked in that seed 05:09 ready to, ready to burst out. 05:11 >>John: So, this cabbage, it's a magnificent thing. 05:15 What did it start off as? 05:18 >>Weston: This cabbage started this past late fall 05:24 as one of these. 05:26 This is the seed that actually grows 05:27 this specific variety of cabbage. 05:30 >>John: So that little thing there, 05:31 one of those tiny seeds-- >>Weston: Yup. 05:34 >>John: ...grows into that? >>Weston: Yup. 05:35 >>John: All itself produces more seeds-- 05:37 >>Weston: Correct. 05:39 >>John: ...starts like a seed in the ground, and grows up-- 05:43 it's a great object lesson, isn't it? 05:45 >>Weston: It is. You know, we were talking about 05:47 how you can't speed up the process, 05:49 but you can delay the process. 05:51 If you don't give the right conditions, 05:53 this isn't going to turn into this, 05:54 or it's going to take a lot longer. 05:56 >>John: There's a process. 05:58 Jesus said, "For the earth yields crops by itself: 06:03 "first the blade, then the head, 06:06 "after that the full grain in the head. 06:09 "But when the grain ripens, 06:11 "immediately he puts in the sickle, 06:13 because the harvest has come." 06:15 And it's that process that causes some people to stumble-- 06:19 two ways.
