00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is "It Is Written."
00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:24 It's one of the most significant health challenges
00:27 of the 21st century, and the more we learn about it,
00:31 the worse it seems to get.
00:33 Now, the thing is there is something you can do about it,
00:36 something God recommended thousands of years ago.
00:39 But even though this divine prescription
00:41 is extremely well known, over time it has become less popular.
00:47 Stress is a killer, a modern calamity.
00:51 The world-renowned Mayo Clinic says that stress can affect
00:54 your mood, your body, and your behavior.
00:57 It can cause headaches, muscle tension,
00:59 chest pain, fatigue.
01:01 It can impact your libido, cause stomach upset,
01:04 sleep problems, and a weakened immune system.
01:07 It can cause anxiety, restlessness, memory problems,
01:11 a lack of motivation or focus, grumpiness, and sadness
01:15 and can prompt overeating or undereating, angry outbursts,
01:19 drug or alcohol misuse, tobacco use, antisocial behavior,
01:23 and on and on.
01:25 All that from stress, and you likely know that.
01:30 Most people deal with stress,
01:32 which can be brought on by financial or social
01:35 or medical or any number of situational reasons.
01:38 You're late? Stress.
01:40 You might lose your job? Stress.
01:43 Pregnant? Stress.
01:44 Flying? Stress, maybe.
01:46 Driving? Stress.
01:47 Bills to pay? Stress.
01:50 Can't decide what to order
01:51 and someone is telling you to hurry up?
01:53 Stress.
01:54 Shooting a crucial free throw, getting ready for dinner,
01:57 running out of time, major assignment due,
02:00 asking someone out on a date, getting asked out on a date,
02:04 gaining weight, needing to lose weight, needing to gain weight,
02:07 rushing to catch a train or a plane--
02:10 these things which cause stress are everywhere.
02:15 A little stress is fine-- good for you, in fact.
02:18 But too much stress and you could easily get sick,
02:22 have serious health problems, and end up in a very bad way.
02:26 And along the way
02:27 your quality of life can suffer significantly.
02:31 But looking down through the stream of time,
02:33 God, in His wisdom and with a heart full of love,
02:37 saw that stress would one day be a major issue.
02:40 And so He built into the calendar a remedy for stress.
02:46 Let's go back, way back. [swoosh of wind]
02:49 The children of Israel had just come out of Egyptian slavery.
02:52 God was leading them to the promised land.
02:55 They were on their way to take up their role
02:57 as God's very own people in their very own land.
03:01 This would be a fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham.
03:04 And from this people would come the Messiah.
03:07 So, God communicated to them the principles of His kingdom
03:11 and, in doing so, revealed just what He was really like.
03:15 Remember, they'd been enslaved for 400 years.
03:18 They hadn't been the masters of their own destiny.
03:21 So God would give them guidelines, rules for living.
03:25 He said, "I am the Lord your God,
03:27 "who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
03:29 out of the house of bondage."
03:31 In other words, "I have liberated you, freed you."
03:34 So, now that I've done that,
03:36 "You shall have no other gods before me."
03:39 That's Exodus 20, verses 2 and 3.
03:41 Which stands to reason--
03:42 God was their Creator and their Liberator.
03:45 He'd made them and redeemed them.
03:48 They were entirely dependent on Him.
03:50 He'd sent the 10 plagues,
03:51 intervened with the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire,
03:54 and then had opened up the Red Sea
03:56 and destroyed pharaoh and his armies.
03:59 This was pretty obvious.
04:01 There's only one God, so have no other gods
04:04 because any other god would be a false god.
04:08 Then a variation on that first word,
04:10 in short, don't make graven images--statues and so forth--
04:15 and don't bow down and worship them.
04:18 Why would you worship the creation
04:20 when you're able to worship the Creator?
04:23 Idolatry lowers one's conception of God.
04:26 It diminishes God.
04:28 And, therefore, it diminishes you as a child of God.
04:33 Then a third commandment:
04:35 "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,
04:37 "for the Lord will not him guiltless
04:39 who takes His name in vain."
04:41 Clearly connected with the first two commandments dealing
04:44 with the holiness of God and a person's relationship with God,
04:48 this has to do with respect and remembering that God is God,
04:52 not cheapening God in any way.
04:55 And as well as this being about not using God's name
04:58 as a common curse word, it also means
05:00 don't take His name in vain by claiming to be His follower
05:04 while you're not living like you're His follower.
05:07 That kind of misrepresentation is taking God's name in vain.
05:13 So, let's look at this in terms of a remedy for stress,
05:17 the silent killer.
05:19 What would it do for you to know that you have a God,
05:23 a sovereign God, the Creator of all things?
05:26 You could cast "all your care[s] upon Him,"
05:29 knowing that "He cares for you."
05:31 You could come to Him if you "labor and are heavy laden,"
05:34 know that He would "give you rest."
05:36 You could "be still, and know that [He is] God."
05:40 And where it says "be still" in Psalm 46 in verse 10,
05:43 that means to let something drop or to relax.
05:48 "Relax, and know that I am God."
05:51 But God added to this.
05:54 This trust we're to have in God
05:55 goes way beyond mental assent or just recognition.
06:00 The comfort you're to experience in knowing that God is God
06:03 is to be accompanied by a certain action.
06:06 And we find that in the fourth commandment.
06:09 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
06:12 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
06:15 "but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.
06:18 "In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son,
06:21 "nor your daughter, nor your male servant,
06:24 "nor your female servant, nor your cattle,
06:27 "nor your stranger who is within your gates.
06:30 "For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,
06:33 "the sea, and all that is in them,
06:34 "and rested the seventh day.
06:37 Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."
06:42 Now, look at what God did.
06:44 Right there in humanity's moral code,
06:47 God placed a remedy for stress, a divine prescription.
06:54 He knew that 2,000 years after Jesus walked the earth,
06:58 the devil would have everybody so busy
07:01 we wouldn't have time for God.
07:03 So, God gave us time:
07:06 a 24-hour time period every single week
07:10 where you can release the pressure valve on life
07:14 and let off some of the steam.
07:17 Years ago it was common for people to cook
07:19 with a pressure cooker, a tightly sealed pot
07:21 that uses high pressure to cook food more quickly.
07:24 The liquid inside the pot becomes steam,
07:26 increasing the pressure in the pot,
07:28 [steam hissing] increasing the temperature in the pot,
07:31 and therefore cooking food more quickly.
07:34 Now, what I remember about the pressure cooker my mother had
07:36 was that it was heavy and hazardous.
07:40 The lid blew off it at least once.
07:43 Whatever was inside went everywhere.
07:45 I remember it was red, but I don't remember more than that.
07:49 It wasn't uncommon for the valve on a pressure cooker to clog,
07:53 and then a gasket might blow, and the lid could go flying.
07:58 Life can be like a pressure cooker.
08:00 There's so much going on, so many demands, so much pressure.
08:05 And that pressure can build until someone blows a gasket.
08:09 So, God said, "Take time out.
08:11 "I'm giving you 24 hours every seven days
08:14 to let the pressure off, to let the stress of life roll away."
08:20 Perfect. God saw what we would need.
08:23 Thousands of years ago,
08:25 humanity couldn't see stress-related heart attacks,
08:28 but God could.
08:29 We couldn't see high blood pressure, but God could.
08:32 We couldn't see stress driving people
08:34 to drug and alcohol problems, but God could.
08:38 And so He said, "Here's a simple remedy
08:41 "to help keep your head on straight,
08:44 to let your anxiety go, to let the tension dissipate."
08:47 Now, is this a magic bullet?
08:50 Is it really that easy
08:52 to get the stress out of life completely?
08:54 We'll look at that in just a moment.

09:39 If de-stressing was as easy as doing one simple thing,
09:44 well, life would be a dream, wouldn't it?
09:46 It you're unwell, a doctor isn't likely to tell you to just
09:50 take this pill and then everything's going to be okay.
09:53 If you're unhealthy, simply eating more vegetables
09:56 isn't going to fix everything.
09:57 It's a good start, but you also want to quit drinking
10:01 and get some exercise and maybe get more sleep.
10:05 Taking care of the stress in your life isn't simply a matter
10:08 of doing just one thing, even if that one simple thing
10:12 was given to you by God Himself.
10:14 You might be placing yourself under undue stress
10:16 by taking on too much.
10:19 And in order to deal with your stress,
10:20 you might want to back off a few things.
10:23 It might be that your expectations from life
10:26 are too high.
10:27 Maybe your wants and your needs are out of alignment.
10:31 Maybe you could get by with less house and fewer vehicles
10:34 and less extravagant vacations.
10:37 For some people, de-stressing means cutting back, doing less,
10:42 not trying to keep up with the Joneses,
10:44 worrying less about what other people think.
10:46 It might be that you need to learn to worry less.
10:49 Here's the Mayo Clinic again
10:50 talking about how to deal with stress.
10:53 They say people should exercise regularly,
10:56 have a sense of humor, spend time with family and friends,
10:59 set aside time for hobbies, read a book,
11:02 listen to music, or go for a walk,
11:04 get enough sleep, eat a healthy, balanced diet,
11:08 don't use tobacco, alcohol, or illegal substances.
11:13 And there's something else.
11:14 It's known that anger can trigger a heart attack
11:18 and that it raises your blood pressure.
11:21 So, less anger, less stress.
11:25 Stress that's not dealt with can lead to health problems,
11:28 such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke,
11:31 obesity, and diabetes.
11:33 The American Psychological Association says that
11:36 "stress affects all systems of the body."
11:40 The musculoskeletal system-- they say "muscle tension
11:43 is almost a reflex reaction to stress."
11:46 The respiratory system--
11:47 stress can cause asthma attacks and shortness of breath.
11:50 The cardiovascular system--
11:52 even short-term stress, being stuck in traffic
11:55 or meeting deadlines, "causes an increase in heart rate,"
11:59 while repeated acute stress can contribute to inflammation
12:02 in the circulatory system.
12:04 The endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous,
12:08 and male and female reproductive systems
12:11 are all negatively affected by stress.
12:14 It's bad stuff.
12:15 Which is why it isn't a surprise that thousands of years ago
12:19 God gave the human family a remedy for stress,
12:24 a remedy for burnout.
12:26 No, no, not a magic bullet.
12:28 You wouldn't do just this and think all of the stress
12:32 is going to melt out of your life.
12:34 But with this being divinely ordained,
12:37 why would you not do this?
12:39 Every week, time away from the craziness of the world.
12:43 And before anyone says obeying God sounds like legalism,
12:47 let me speak to that.
12:49 I like what author Lauren Winner said:
12:51 "Practicing...spiritual disciplines
12:53 "does not make us Christians.
12:55 "Instead, the practicing teaches us what it means
13:00 to live as Christians."
13:02 Let's look at the question of legalism.
13:04 A man and woman are standing before a minister.
13:06 They're two-thirds of the way through a wedding service,
13:08 and it's time for the vows.
13:09 "Do you, Maria, take this man, José,
13:11 "to be your lawfully wedded husband,
13:13 "to have and to hold in sickness and in health,
13:15 in prosperity and adversity, as long as you both shall live?"
13:18 And Maria says, "What are you, preacher?
13:22 Some kind of legalist?" That's crazy, right?
13:26 "Tayshaun, clean your room."
13:28 "All these rules, Dad,
13:29 what an unhealthy way to run a family."
13:31 Yeah, that boy's going to learn some lessons pretty quickly.
13:33 The sign on the road says 35. You drive at 65.
13:38 The police officer who pulls you over
13:40 explains that you have broken the law.
13:43 Try telling the police officer
13:44 that he or she is being a legalist.
13:46 That defense won't help you in a court of law.
13:50 It seems as though we believe in law everywhere in the world,
13:54 except for in church. [gavel strikes once]
13:56 When people ignore the law in society, we call that anarchy.
14:00 When they ignore it in church, that's called sin.
14:04 John wrote that "sin is the transgression of the law."
14:09 There's zero problem with God's law.
14:11 You want people obeying the law.
14:13 If your neighbor is murdered, if your spouse cheats,
14:16 if your home is broken into, if your friends lie to you,
14:19 you're going to appreciate how wonderful it would be
14:22 if people lived in harmony with the Ten Commandments.
14:26 Yes, Paul did say that we're not under the law.
14:29 He said that plainly, and he meant it.
14:32 And he was correct when he said it.
14:34 In Romans 6, verse 1, he asks a question:
14:37 "Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?"
14:41 He answers that, "God forbid," and says,
14:45 "How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?"
14:49 He's referencing dying to self and allowing the Holy Spirit
14:53 to fill you and guide you.
14:55 Then he speaks about baptism,
14:57 dying to the old life and being raised up to walk
14:59 in what he calls "newness of life."
15:02 "Knowing this," Paul writes,
15:04 "that our old man is crucified with Him,
15:06 "that the body of sin might be destroyed,
15:09 that henceforth we should not serve sin."
15:12 And then he says, "For he that is dead is freed from sin."
15:18 He goes on: "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves
15:22 "to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God
15:26 through Jesus Christ our Lord."
15:28 And then says that we should not allow sin to reign
15:32 in our mortal bodies, that we shouldn't obey sin.
15:36 He continues in verse 14:
15:38 "Sin shall not have dominion over you:
15:42 for [you] are not under... law, but under grace."
15:46 He says in the next verse,
15:48 "Shall we sin?" because that's the case?
15:52 And he says, "God forbid." Absolutely not.
15:56 Paul then states that you're the servant
15:57 of the one you choose to obey.
15:59 You can yield to sin, which leads to death.
16:02 Or you can yield to obedience, which leads to righteousness.
16:07 When he says that a believer in Jesus is "not under the law,"
16:12 he means not under the law as a system of salvation,
16:16 as a system of righteousness.
16:19 And because, as Paul has already said,
16:21 that all have sinned and that all need grace,
16:25 if you ignore grace and choose to follow the law
16:28 as a means of salvation, you'll be lost.
16:34 Under the law doesn't mean obeying.
16:36 Under the law means relying on your own works
16:39 and living under the old covenant, where the approach is,
16:42 "Everything the Lord has said we will do."
16:44 It's self-righteousness.
16:46 Under grace, that's leaning on God for everything.
16:49 You can't say, "I'm under grace,
16:52 so therefore I won't obey God."
16:55 You would say, "I'm under grace,
16:57 "so because I am Spirit-filled, I will obey God,
17:01 "but only by His grace and only through His strength,
17:04 "and not because I believe this will merit salvation,
17:08 but because through Jesus I have salvation."
17:12 That period of rest God has given the human family
17:16 is an oasis in time.
17:19 It's God limiting how much the world,
17:21 how much life can encroach.
17:24 It's time out for mental health and spiritual health.
17:28 It's saying, "No one is benefited if I burn myself out."
17:33 It's time for what matters most.
17:37 I'll be right back.

20:59 "Of the people who said they had felt stress at some point

21:18 Twenty-two percent cited debt.
21:21 Thirty-six percent of women who felt high levels of stress
21:24 related it to their appearance or body image,
21:28 while young people frequently cited pressure to succeed
21:32 as a stressor.

21:36 Pressure to succeed is stressful,
21:39 but you ought to want to succeed.

21:44 that probably should stress you to some degree.
21:48 But you don't want to be overwhelmed by stress,
21:50 and God certainly doesn't want that for you.
21:53 Look at some of what the Bible says.
21:55 This is John 14:27.
21:57 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you;
22:01 "not as the world gives do I give to you.
22:04 Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
22:08 Earlier in the same chapter:
22:09 "Let not your heart be troubled;
22:11 you believe in God, believe also in me."
22:14 "Be still, and know that I am God."
22:16 That's Psalm 46, verse 10.
22:18 Earlier in the same chapter: "God is our refuge and strength,
22:22 a very present help in trouble."
22:25 Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you who labor
22:28 and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
22:31 Romans 5, verse 1:
22:32 "Therefore, having been justified by faith,
22:35 we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
22:39 The point being, a connection with Jesus,
22:41 experiencing salvation should bring peace into your life.
22:46 Psalm 119, verse 165:
22:49 "Great peace have they which love Thy law:
22:53 and nothing shall offend them."
22:55 New Testament Bible writers often started their letters
22:59 wishing peace to their readers.
23:01 Jude, Revelation, 2 John, 1 Peter, 2 Peter,
23:05 Philemon, Titus, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians,
23:10 Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians,
23:13 1 and 2 Thessalonians, and 1 and 2 Timothy
23:17 all begin with the writer wishing peace to his readers.
23:22 Jesus is the Prince of Peace in Isaiah 9 in verse 6.
23:26 God is called "the God of peace" in Romans 16, verse 20.
23:30 So why isn't there peace?
23:32 Too much going on, the pressures of life,
23:35 demanding schedules...right.
23:38 And while you can't sweep all that out of the way,
23:41 you can come close to God
23:44 and let the peace of Christ wash over you.
23:48 And that's where the biblical concept of Sabbath matters--
23:53 taking time for God, hitting the pause button
23:57 on your busy schedule, actually stepping back
24:00 from the demands of life so that you're not going back to work
24:03 on Monday for a rest from your hectic lifestyle.
24:07 And this idea isn't about doing absolutely nothing.
24:10 You can commune with God and worship on that day.
24:14 You can block out distractions
24:16 and spend time with church family or your own family.
24:20 Being in nature is to see the artistry of the Creator
24:24 and appreciate Him in His created works.
24:28 The challenge is that too many of us are too busy
24:31 getting stressed to take time to alleviate stress.
24:37 The truth is the experience of the Sabbath is precisely
24:40 what Christians talk about experiencing
24:43 and what they want to experience:
24:46 more of Jesus, more of God's presence in your life,
24:50 more assurance, more communing with God.
24:54 Every believer wants that, or at least they say they do--
24:57 blocking out the world for a time and letting in more
24:59 of the light of God's presence and therefore God's power.
25:03 Many followers of God are searching for something
25:06 they already have or something they have access to.
25:10 Reminds me of the homeless man who died under a bridge
25:13 in Wyoming on a frigid winter night without realizing
25:18 his extremely wealthy aunt had died
25:21 and left him millions of dollars.
25:24 He didn't know what he had.
25:26 And many followers of Jesus are drowning in stress
25:29 without realizing God has gifted them rest, a relief,
25:35 something that will be a source of strength
25:38 physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
25:41 And you want that, don't you?
25:43 You've heard Jesus invite you:
25:45 "Come to me, and I will give you rest."
25:48 Let's pray now and thank God for His gift of rest.
25:52 Our Father in heaven, we come in the name of Jesus,
25:54 the Creator, grateful for all of His gifts,
25:57 thanking You for the gift of time, the gift of rest.
26:00 And as we contemplate that biblical concept of Sabbath,
26:04 I pray we will find more time in our lives for Jesus, not less,
26:08 that we'll learn to block out the world,
26:10 not invite even more of it in,
26:12 and that we'll take time for the One who matters most,
26:15 that we'll take adequate time,
26:17 that we'll step back from the world,
26:19 de-stress, and be filled with Your presence and Your power.
26:24 We thank You for Your great gifts towards us,
26:27 and we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
