00:20 >>John Bradshaw: This is "It Is Written."
00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:24 Prayer is one of the cornerstones
00:26 of the Christian life.
00:28 But what if it feels like your prayer life is stuck in a rut?
00:32 How can you pray more effectively?
00:34 Now, there's no question God wants you to pray.
00:38 Paul wrote, "Pray without ceasing."
00:40 One of Jesus' parables was taught for the purpose
00:43 of teaching that people "always ought to pray
00:46 and not lose heart."
00:48 His disciples asked Him one day to teach them to pray,
00:51 and He did.
00:53 So, what is prayer?
00:55 Prayer is communicating with God,
00:57 intentionally communicating,
00:59 entering into closeness with God to tell Him
01:02 what's on your heart.
01:03 It's opening up your heart to God as you would to a friend.
01:07 According to the Pew Research Center,
01:09 59% of Catholics in the United States say they pray daily,
01:15 79% of evangelical Protestants,
01:17 69% of Muslims,
01:19 43% of Buddhists,
01:21 and 51% of Hindus.
01:23 Although, not to be cynical, but you might wonder
01:26 how accurate those figures are and what people mean by praying.
01:32 You don't want to pray casual prayers, empty prayers,
01:35 insipid prayers.
01:37 Jesus prayed, and people came back from the dead.
01:41 Elijah prayed, and fire came down from heaven,
01:44 and then the heavens opened, and it rained for the first time
01:47 in three and a half years.
01:49 Paul and Silas prayed, and prison doors opened,
01:52 and their chains fell off.
01:54 A tax collector prayed, and he was forgiven of his sins,
01:57 justified by God.
01:59 You want to pray prayers that move mountains
02:02 and, if not literal mountains, then certainly mountains
02:06 of difficulty and challenges, mountains of burdens,
02:09 mountains of guilt or confusion or illness or financial trouble.
02:15 I'm going to share with you how you can pray
02:17 powerful, effective prayers.
02:20 I'll share with you several prayers from the Bible
02:22 that will take you deep inside the minds and hearts of people
02:25 who pray powerful prayers.
02:27 So, what did Jesus say about prayer?
02:31 In John 14:14, He said,
02:32 "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it."
02:36 Now, that almost seems just a bit too good to be true,
02:39 as though He's exaggerating.
02:41 I mean, anything?
02:44 Well, yes. That's what He says.
02:47 Except...you prayed for a shiny red sports car,
02:50 and you didn't get it. You prayed to go to Disneyland,
02:52 and your parents never took you.
02:54 You prayed that grandma would get well, and grandma died.
02:57 So, what's up with that?
02:59 Well, here's an important principle.
03:01 Prayer isn't a magic wand.
03:03 It, it isn't a stick with which you beat God to convince Him
03:07 to do everything that you want.
03:08 God isn't Santa.
03:10 You don't sit on His knee at the mall and tell Him
03:12 that you want a bicycle and lots of candy,
03:14 and poof! That's that. That's because God knows best.
03:19 God is all wise, and we don't often ask for things
03:22 that in the big picture aren't the very best.
03:25 Wait! Not best that grandma lives?
03:28 Right, I see your point, but let's not forget
03:30 that if God answered every prayer that people live,
03:33 you'd have neighbors that are 3,000 years old.
03:36 And we have to understand that
03:37 we don't always understand the big picture.
03:40 God, on the other hand, does.
03:43 He promises that ultimately "all things work together
03:47 for good to them that love God."
03:49 So, we pray and trust,
03:52 even when we don't get the answers to prayer that we want.
03:55 Jesus said in Matthew 18, verses 19 and 20,
03:58 "Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth
04:02 "as touching any thing that they shall ask,
04:05 "it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
04:08 "For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
04:11 there am I in the midst of them."
04:14 That is powerful.
04:15 And James wrote, "You ask and do not receive,
04:18 because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasure."
04:22 You're praying for a million dollars,
04:24 and you might not get it because God knows
04:26 you're only going to waste it,
04:27 or it might end up being a curse and not a blessing,
04:30 indicating that prayer shouldn't be self-centered.
04:33 Oh, yes, pray for yourself, absolutely,
04:36 but not for selfish, personal gain.
04:39 That cuts against the point of Christianity altogether.
04:43 When the disciples came to Jesus and asked Him to teach them
04:46 to pray, this is what He said:
04:48 "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
04:51 "Your kingdom come.
04:53 "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
04:56 "Give us this day our daily bread.
04:58 "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
05:01 "And do not lead us into temptation,
05:03 but deliver us from the evil one."
05:06 That's what we call the Lord's Prayer,
05:09 with some versions of this prayer adding,
05:12 "For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
05:16 Amen."
05:17 Now, you could choose to pray this prayer just like that.
05:21 But that's not really what Jesus intended.
05:25 This was a model for prayer,
05:28 to help spur or motivate your prayers,
05:31 to have you think about what you want to remember
05:34 and not forget in prayer.
05:37 And I want to share with you a guideline or an outline,
05:40 a method for prayer that I know can help you
05:43 to jump-start your prayer life.
05:46 It'll lift your prayer out of the doldrums,
05:48 enabling the thermals of blessing to lift you up
05:52 so that you're not stuck in the downdrafts of life.
05:55 God wants you to "mount up with wings as eagles,"
05:57 and prayer is the key to living that vibrant life.
06:02 You might be familiar with other methods of prayer,
06:04 and I'm going to say, use whatever works for you.
06:08 But praying effective, life-changing,
06:11 transformative prayers is as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4.
06:17 And we're drawing from the Lord's Prayer.
06:20 One, two, three, four--
06:25 first, one: How does the Lord's Prayer begin?
06:30 "Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name."
06:33 We're remembering that the God of heaven is the one true God.
06:37 One: one true God--
06:40 this is where you take time to praise God and to thank God.
06:44 Praise and thanks are the foundations of prevailing prayer
06:47 because they put everything in perspective.
06:51 To whom are you praying? To the one true God.
06:54 Offering praise to God reminds you just who He is
06:57 and what He's capable of.
06:59 And it reminds you how small and incapable you are
07:03 and how much you need God to intervene in your experience.
07:06 Praise and thanks are two very different things.
07:09 Praise is praise.
07:10 You magnify God because of who He is and what He's like.
07:13 Who is He? He's the Creator.
07:15 Praise Him for His creative power,
07:17 the power that brought the world into existence,
07:20 the power that gave life, that gave life to you.
07:23 David wrote, "Remember His marvelous works
07:26 which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,"
07:29 in Psalm 105.
07:31 When you pray to the Creator, you have zero doubt
07:35 that He's able to do anything for you, to provide for you,
07:39 to be there for you because He is the Creator.
07:44 You can praise God for Calvary,
07:46 for His goodness, His patience, His mercy, His love.
07:50 You realize quickly that you've got plenty to praise God for
07:53 and that doing so gets you out of yourself,
07:56 out of your own head.
07:57 You're opening up yourself to the mind of God.
08:00 He brought down the walls of Jericho;
08:03 He can bring down the walls in your life.
08:05 He carpeted the ground with manna; He can provide for you.
08:08 He brought water out of a rock;
08:10 He's mighty enough to do what needs to be done in your life.
08:14 And we're only getting started.
08:15 One, two, three, four, prayer-- we're not even through one.
08:19 Well, what about thanks as well as praise?
08:23 We'll look at that in just a moment.

09:35 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on "It Is Written."
09:38 Prayer is essential to Christian living.
09:41 In fact, it's essential to living.
09:43 But rather than looking at prayer as a duty,
09:45 it's important to consider prayer a privilege.
09:48 You get one-on-one time with God,
09:51 the self-existent One who made heaven and earth.
09:54 He invites you to spend time with Him.
09:56 "Come now,...let us reason together," God says.
09:59 Where Jesus says, "Come to me, ...and I will give you rest,"
10:03 we come to Him today through prayer.
10:06 Prayer is as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4.
10:10 What's one?
10:12 You pray to the one true God, and knowing that,
10:16 you can pray big prayers
10:18 because you know that God is big enough.
10:21 When you pray to the one true God,
10:22 you pray with praise and thanks, praising God for who He is.
10:28 Four times in one psalm the Bible says,
10:30 "Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness,
10:34 and for His wonderful works to the children of men!"
10:36 Hebrews 13:15 says, "Let us continually offer
10:41 "the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips,
10:46 giving thanks to His name."
10:49 And coupled with that--
10:50 and we're in the "one" of 1, 2, 3, 4, prayer--
10:54 is thanks.
10:55 That one leper came back to thank Jesus for cleansing,
10:59 and Jesus commended him for that.
11:02 You have so much to be thankful for:
11:05 You're alive. You know Jesus.
11:07 You have health, to some degree,
11:09 family, friends, work, purpose, good weather, good news,
11:13 the hope of the return of Jesus, the Bible, church,
11:16 your church family, food, rest--the list goes on.
11:20 In fact, it's a good idea that before you pray,
11:22 you make a list.
11:24 What am I going to praise God for today?
11:26 What should I thank God for?
11:29 Make a list--otherwise you might forget.
11:31 You don't have to make a list,
11:33 but you'll find that doing so can be a great help.
11:35 So remember, one,
11:37 give thanks and praise to the one true God.
11:42 So, what's the two of 1, 2, 3, 4, prayer?
11:47 How does the Lord's Prayer go?
11:49 "Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
11:52 "Thy kingdom come,
11:53 Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."
11:57 There you go: "Thy will be done."
12:01 You pray to God according to the will of God.
12:04 You surrender to Him.
12:08 Surrendering to Him is about living your life
12:10 according to the will of God.
12:11 In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed,
12:14 "Nevertheless not my will, but Yours, be done."
12:18 That wasn't just about the cross.
12:19 That was Jesus' rule for life.
12:22 "Thy will be done" is about your life, your actions,
12:26 your attitudes, the way you conduct your life,
12:28 the way you relate to others.
12:30 One thing a lot of Christians fail to realize
12:32 is that faith in God is about surrender.
12:36 Romans 6, verse 16:
12:38 "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves
12:41 "servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
12:44 whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"
12:49 You are the servant
12:51 of the one you yield to.
12:53 Enough of living a casual Christian life--
12:57 we're getting close to the return of Jesus.
12:59 You want to be surrendered to God's will
13:01 in all areas of your life.
13:03 If all you've been doing is going to church
13:05 to keep up with the neighbors, it's time to turn things around.
13:09 And God can do that.
13:12 If you're half committed, not fully surrendered,
13:15 we're going to change things.
13:16 Remember, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart,...
13:20 soul,...mind, and...strength."
13:21 So you want to surrender in prayer.
13:23 "I'm praying about whether or not we should get a puppy
13:26 from that person at work."
13:27 Good.
13:29 But you're also saying, "Lord, I want You to take my will
13:32 and blend it with Your will for my life."
13:34 Now, I'll take this further. Here's how radical God is.
13:37 In Romans 6 in verse 1, Paul asks, "What shall we say then?
13:41 Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?"
13:45 Then he says, "God forbid.
13:49 "How shall we, that are dead to sin,
13:52 "live any longer therein?...
13:54 "For he that is dead is freed from sin.
13:57 "Now if we be dead with Christ,
14:00 we believe that we shall also live with Him."
14:03 Instead of being led around by your carnal nature,
14:07 the Bible says you may be dead to sin, dead to self.
14:12 Paul wrote to the Corinthians that he died "daily."
14:16 So, every day as you pray, let there be a funeral
14:22 where the old you dies and is buried
14:25 and a new you is created to walk
14:28 with what Paul described as "newness of life."
14:33 You see, people miss this.
14:34 Faith in Jesus isn't a modification of the old life.
14:38 It's God's power remaking you in God's image,
14:42 and that won't happen unless you make the decision
14:44 to die to the old life, and you may through faith in God.
14:49 This will change your life.
14:51 And when surrendering your life to God,
14:53 you want to pray according to the will of God.
14:56 As you're praying for a raise,
14:58 you're asking that God's will is done.
15:00 A raise? Good health?
15:03 Your children to marry someone committed to God?
15:06 Good weather so that you can harvest your soybeans?
15:09 Those things are in line with the will of God for your life,
15:11 so you can pray with confidence.
15:13 But when you're praying for your neighbor to recover from ALS,
15:16 you don't know if maybe God sees it's better
15:18 that he or she should quickly pass away.
15:21 You want a vacation in South Dakota.
15:23 It might be there's a blessing waiting for you in Indiana.
15:26 You pray that your kid gets into police academy,
15:28 but you don't know that God may have a different plan
15:31 for your child and wants him or her
15:33 working in IT or in ministry.
15:35 Praying according to the will of God is to recognize
15:38 that God's way is the right way.
15:41 One, two, three, four, prayer--
15:44 that's one, praise and thanks to the one true God,
15:48 and two, surrender to Him
15:53 by dying to sin and self
15:56 and asking that God's will is done in all areas of your life.
16:01 Okay, so what are three and four?
16:06 We'll look at those in just a moment.

17:53 and you pray with praise and thanks.
17:55 When the armies of Moab and Ammon and others came in battle
17:59 against Judah, King Jehoshaphat sent the singers out first,
18:04 "who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out
18:06 "before the army and were saying: 'Praise the Lord,
18:09 for His mercy endures forever.'"
18:11 And Judah was triumphant.
18:12 When they led with praise, God worked powerfully.
18:17 Now, two, surrender to Him.
18:21 Yield your life to God.
18:23 Die to sin and self,
18:26 and live and pray according to His will.
18:30 Now, for three,
18:32 I want you to remember three important words.
18:36 In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus taught us to pray,
18:39 "Give us this day our daily bread."
18:44 God has asked us to pray for our needs and wants.
18:49 Now, while you're doing an inventory of what that might be,
18:52 I'm going to suggest to you that your greatest need
18:55 is the need of the Holy Spirit.
18:56 You want God active in your life.
18:59 Jesus promised you that God would give you the Holy Spirit.
19:02 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts
19:04 "to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father
19:07 "give the Holy Spirit
19:08 to those who ask Him!"
19:10 Luke 11:13.
19:11 The power of God's Holy Spirit in your life
19:13 has to be your first need:
19:16 God's presence, power against sin,
19:19 Jesus living His life in you.
19:21 Pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit daily.
19:25 Now, your "daily bread" includes the things you need
19:28 and the things you want.
19:30 And notice: "Give us this day our daily bread."
19:34 That means you're praying not just for yourself
19:38 but for others--family, friends, church, work, your community.
19:43 Remember, you're not an island.
19:45 Now, you can and should pray for others.
19:48 "Our daily bread"--Jesus prayed that God would strengthen Him.
19:53 There were times He spent whole nights in prayer.
19:55 Notice, it was after Peter, James, and John slept,
19:58 and did not pray, that Peter didn't have
20:02 the spiritual strength to admit that he was a follower of Jesus.
20:06 He didn't pray, and he wasn't able to stand up
20:09 in the face of temptation.
20:10 Look at this incredible prayer in 2 Chronicles, chapter 20.
20:15 Jehoshaphat is staring down the barrel of an onslaught
20:17 by enemy armies.
20:19 He's outnumbered and overwhelmed, and he prays.
20:21 In fact, he had all of Judah praying.
20:23 There is power in much prayer.
20:26 "O Lord God of our fathers," he began,
20:28 "are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule
20:32 "over all the kingdoms of the nations,
20:35 "and in Your hand is there not power and might,
20:37 so that no one is able to withstand You?"
20:39 Notice that? That's one.
20:42 He's praying to the one true God, the Creator,
20:45 and he's telling God,
20:46 "I believe You are powerful enough to do this."
20:49 He reminds God that He drove out the inhabitants of the land
20:52 and gave it to Abraham.
20:53 Therefore, Judah should not be dispossessed of their land now.
20:58 He reminds God of the promises God had made:
21:00 "You have promised to hear us and save us
21:02 when disaster comes."
21:04 He reminds God that years before,
21:05 Judah's enemies would have been destroyed,
21:07 but God told Israel to hold off.
21:10 Now, notice this: "O our God, will You not judge them,
21:13 "for we have no power against this great multitude
21:16 "that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do,
21:20 but our eyes are upon You."
21:23 Notice this? "We have no power against this great multitude."
21:27 We don't know what to do.
21:29 "But our eyes are upon You."
21:32 They knew where their hope was, where their power was--
21:36 not in them, but in the God of heaven.
21:38 When you pray like that,
21:40 telling God that He is able, that you are not,
21:43 but that you are looking to Him and trusting in Him,
21:45 great things will happen.
21:47 Three words, "our daily bread"-- pray for your needs,
21:52 pray for your wants, and remember,
21:55 your greatest need is the Holy Spirit in your life.
22:00 One, two, three--four is "four"-given.
22:07 Confess your sins and believe that God forgives you.
22:11 Be specific. Be honest.
22:14 And be hopeful.
22:15 That's why I call this "forgiven"
22:18 and not "forgiveness."
22:21 Because when you ask God to forgive you, genuinely,
22:23 you should believe that He will.
22:25 David prayed, "For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive."
22:31 All right, some quick hits now, make time to pray.
22:34 Find time. You can't be too busy to pray.
22:37 You might need to get creative, but make time to pray.
22:41 Make a list--
22:42 remember, a list of your praises, your thanks,
22:44 your requests, the things you want to confess.
22:46 You might want to destroy that list when you're done,
22:48 unless you're keeping a personal prayer journal.
22:50 Pray your personal prayers privately.
22:54 Pray big! God is big.
22:56 Don't pray, "If it's not too much trouble,
22:59 please would You...?"
23:01 There's one Bible story where the king didn't place
23:03 big enough demands on God, and the prophet was upset with him.
23:06 Pray, believing that God is able.
23:09 John Knox prayed that God would give him Scotland--
23:12 that is, for Scotland to be won to faith in Christ.
23:16 Mary, Queen of Scots, is said to have said,
23:19 "I fear the prayers of John Knox
23:21 more than all the assembled armies of Europe."
23:24 How often should you pray?
23:26 Personal prayer with God in the morning and in the evening,
23:29 both essential.
23:30 Daniel, the Bible says, prayed three times a day.
23:33 Bottom line, pray more, not less.
23:38 True story, a man visited a doctor.
23:40 He'd seen every other specialist he could find
23:44 but couldn't find relief from what was bothering him.
23:46 Learning that other doctors had tried everything,
23:49 this one said, "Sorry, there's nothing I can do.
23:52 "Everything that could have been done,
23:53 should have done has been done."
23:56 But then he said, "You know, I could pray for you."
24:00 The man responded by saying something like, "Well, doc,
24:02 if you think that would help, you just go right ahead."
24:04 So, the physician prayed, and the man went his way.
24:08 A week or so later, he was back.
24:11 He said, "Doctor, since you prayed for me last time,
24:15 "my condition has disappeared.
24:17 Would you please pray for me again?"
24:20 Now, he had seen 40 specialists.
24:24 The doctor prayed, and for weeks that same man came back to visit
24:29 that same doctor just so the doctor could pray for him.
24:35 Pray, and remember, 1, 2, 3, 4.
24:39 Pray to the one true God with praise and thanks.
24:43 Surrender to Him.
24:45 Remember those three words, "our daily bread."
24:48 And confess your sins knowing you will be forgiven
24:53 because Jesus died for you.
24:55 And remember that you're not just praying
24:56 to get your needs met.
24:58 There's a greater need,
25:00 and that is learning to know and trust the heart of God--
25:04 coming into such close communion with Him
25:05 that whatever happens in your life, you'll trust God,
25:09 surrendering completely to Him,
25:12 and believing His heart is towards you,
25:15 and that you'll soon see Jesus when Jesus returns.

26:24 Our Father in heaven, we thank You for the privilege of prayer.
26:27 And I'm praying that as we pray, we will see heaven come down;
26:31 as we pray, we'll see heaven move;
26:33 as we pray, we'll be transformed.
26:36 And I'm asking that You would draw us to pray,

26:56 and also, most importantly of all,
27:00 to change us more and more into the image of Your Son Jesus.
27:06 Friend, would you say now, "Lord, teach me to pray"?
27:08 Will you say, "Lord, call me to pray"?
27:12 That's our prayer today, Father, and You're asking
27:15 that as we discover prayer is as simple as 1, 2, 3, 4,
27:20 we look forward to that great day when Jesus returns,
27:24 and we leave this old world behind,
27:27 and we spend eternity in Your presence.
27:31 Thank You that we can enter into Your presence through prayer.
27:34 Bless us as we do.
27:36 In Jesus' name, amen.
27:39 Thank you so much for joining me.
27:41 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time.
27:43 Until then, remember:
27:44 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone,
27:48 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
