00:01 guess that at some point in
00:03 your life you have thought to
00:05 yourself, "I wish I could see
00:06 God." And the truth is that
00:08 you have. You have seen God.
00:11 >> Have you ever heard someone
00:12 say, "Unless I see Him with my
00:15 own eyes, I won't believe in
00:16 God."
00:17 >> Then everyone should
00:19 believe in God because we have
00:20 all seen Him.
00:22 >> In Matthew 25 the Bible
00:24 says there will be two groups
00:26 of people on the final day of
00:28 judgement who will ask God
00:29 this question: "Lord, when did
00:32 we see You?"
00:34 >> And He will answer them:
00:35 "When you saw that stranger
00:37 who was hungry and thirsty and
00:40 needed something to wear, you
00:42 were looking at Me."
00:44 >> God will say, "You did see
00:46 Me because it was I who was
00:48 hungry and thirsty. It was I
00:51 who was a stranger. It was I
00:53 who was sick. It was I who was
00:55 in prison."
00:57 >> So all the days of your
00:58 life God has been very near to
01:01 you in the person of the poor
01:03 and the suffering. The
01:05 question is: did you see Him?
01:07 Did you seek to help Him?
01:10 Did you take time to get
01:11 to know Him?
01:12 >> I John 4 verse 7 says,
01:14 "Everyone who loves is born of
01:16 God and knows God."
01:19 >> So we want to challenge you
01:20 to see God in every person in
01:22 need. For the single mother
01:24 who is struggling to feed and
01:26 clothe her children or the
01:28 teenager who is feeling lonely
01:30 and depressed.
01:31 >> And as you open your heart
01:33 and your doors to those in
01:35 need, you are opening your
01:36 heart to God.
01:38 >> So in a moment we will be
01:40 meeting with three people
01:41 whose purpose is to serve
01:43 humanity so that all may live
01:45 as God intended.

02:07 Canada. Wouldn't it be
02:08 wonderful to wake up every
02:09 morning and to have life
02:11 absolutely predictable.
02:14 Well, sometimes
02:15 it's not like that.
02:16 You know, you wish it would be.
02:18 You wish that you could
02:20 wake up and know that you have
02:22 job security, you know that
02:24 there's enough money in the
02:25 bank to make all of your
02:26 payments and that your home
02:27 will be taken care of.
02:29 But many Canadians right now
02:30 are not in that situation.
02:32 There are many who are in a
02:35 situation where they have lost
02:36 their jobs and they don't know
02:39 how they're going to make
02:40 their payments. And it's in
02:41 times like these that we are
02:43 so thankful for organizations
02:45 such as ADRA Canada.
02:48 >> Today we have Steve Matthews
02:51 who is the Executive Director
02:52 for ADRA Canada joining us.
02:54 Welcome, Steve, and thank you
02:56 so much for being here.
02:58 >> Thank you very much for
02:58 having me.
02:59 >> Well, your purpose every
03:02 day is to meet the needs of
03:05 Canadians. And not just in
03:09 Canada, but throughout the
03:10 world, too. So, Steve, why
03:12 don't you tell us how this
03:14 pandemic has impacted your
03:17 work here at ADRA Canada?
03:20 >> Absolutely. The work that
03:22 we do at ADRA Canada is
03:24 predominantly international,
03:27 but because of the recent
03:30 pandemic that has been taking
03:32 place in the country, we've
03:33 also started to really focus
03:35 on a domestic response as well.
03:39 When the pandemic
03:40 happened and we start seeing
03:42 different businesses shutting
03:43 down, it impacted us as well.
03:45 So we, in the middle of a
03:47 pandemic where things are
03:48 changing rapidly, we also went
03:51 through a transition where we
03:54 moved to virtual office.
03:55 So making that transition with
03:59 all the busyness that's going
04:00 on was quite significant for us.
04:04 What we did in Canada is
04:05 we've made funding available
04:08 for a granting process to be
04:10 able to have projects taking
04:12 place here in Canada to meet
04:14 the needs locally.
04:17 What this pandemic has done
04:18 is it's really increased the --
04:22 it's magnified the
04:23 need in Canada
04:25 and poor are the most
04:29 vulnerable and unfortunately
04:31 here in Canada we've seen an
04:33 increase in need for food bank
04:35 assistance, especially food
04:38 security has been a real
04:39 challenge, on top of all of
04:41 the other challenges with
04:42 regards to rent and bill
04:44 payments and those sorts of
04:45 things.
04:47 >> So tell us about the Bible.
04:49 Does the Bible give you
04:50 guidance specifically in
04:52 dealing with this situation?
04:54 >> Absolutely. I think almost
04:57 any situation we go through
04:58 you can find some guidance in
04:59 the Bible and when I look at
05:02 the Bible and I think of the
05:05 leprosy that's identified in
05:06 the Bible and we see how when
05:09 someone came down with leprosy
05:11 back in Bible times, they were
05:12 sent out of the community.
05:13 So they had this real social
05:15 isolation that was taking
05:16 place where they were sent out
05:18 to another community where the
05:20 lepers were living and when
05:22 they walked through the
05:23 community they had to
05:24 yell out, "Unclean, unclean!"
05:26 People stayed away from them,
05:28 they didn't have that social
05:30 connection, they didn't have
05:31 the contact with their loved
05:32 ones anymore.
05:35 I don't think we have to
05:36 stretch our minds too
05:37 much to see that that's
05:38 certainly the situation that
05:41 we're living in here in Canada
05:42 now. When you go out to a
05:43 store you have to stay six
05:46 feet apart. There's tape on
05:48 the lines to make sure that
05:49 you don't go between these
05:51 lines and you keep that
05:53 distance away from people.
05:55 Families can't go visit their
05:57 grandparents, grandchildren
05:59 can't go visit their
06:00 grandparents who are living in
06:01 a long-term care facility.
06:02 We hear of people that are just
06:03 talking to people through a
06:05 window and being able to go
06:06 wave and say "Hi, we're here."
06:08 Loneliness is there.
06:11 But Jesus was able to reach out
06:13 to people that
06:14 were going through
06:15 situations like that and so
06:17 I think there's a lot we can
06:18 learn from how Christ treated
06:20 those that were going through
06:21 those situations. He was able
06:23 to meet the needs. Now He was
06:24 able to even go and touch the
06:27 lepers heal them from their
06:31 situation, their disease.
06:34 But we can certainly, in our
06:35 situation, still meet the
06:36 needs of others in safe ways
06:38 where we can still maintain
06:39 the distance, but also make
06:41 those, while it's physical
06:42 distance, I don't think it has
06:44 to be social distance to the
06:45 point where we can't still
06:47 communicate and contact
06:48 people.
06:49 >> Absolutely. We've got
06:51 technology, we've got ways of
06:52 communicating with one another
06:54 which is so much better today.
06:55 >> Exactly.
06:56 >> Absolutely true.
06:57 >> So, Steve, can you tell us
06:59 what has made it possible for
07:01 ADRA Canada to complete this
07:03 work in Canada that you're
07:04 doing presently right now?
07:06 >> Well, as the humanitarian
07:09 arm of the Seventh-day
07:09 Adventist Church, we have a
07:12 network of churches across the
07:13 country that we've been able
07:15 to partner with. So the grant
07:17 money that we've made
07:18 available has been provided to
07:20 different entities across the
07:22 country.
07:23 And out of that we've
07:25 funded 28 different projects
07:28 and those projects range from
07:30 right from the Pacific coast
07:33 even up toward the Arctic and
07:34 over to the Atlantic Ocean.
07:36 >> Wow.
07:37 And being able to take
07:39 advantage of that --
07:40 those churches that are already
07:43 there and entities that are
07:45 already set up has really
07:46 helped us to be able to make
07:47 that a reality.
07:50 So my colleague who will be

07:54 Daniel Saugh,
07:55 will be able to
07:56 tell a little bit
07:57 more about the details of some

08:00 He's got some good stories of
08:01 some of the work that we're
08:02 doing across the country.
08:04 >> Well, thank you, and Daniel

08:07 We are going to be listening
08:08 to a song right now:

12:44 and they have been reasonably
12:46 comfortable in providing for
12:47 their family.
12:48 However, tough times set in
12:49 when Mark had an injury.
12:51 He fell at his work site
12:53 and he was bedridden for
12:55 two weeks and he went on
12:57 worker's compensation.
12:59 With his income cut in half and
13:01 Alison working part time,
13:02 it was difficult to feed their
13:04 large family and provide for
13:05 their needs.

13:16 I used to wonder why people
13:17 don't have more kids until I

13:23 But, you know, for the
13:24 year prior to COVID-19, the
13:27 family used to use a food bank
13:28 once a month as a supplement
13:30 to their groceries.
13:31 But when the pandemic

13:33 and particularly in Nova Scotia,
13:35 this food bank wasn't able to

17:09 Canada, and then we're going

17:18 Canada and that is the city of
17:21 Iqaluit, there is the Iqaluit
17:22 Seventh-day Adventist Church

17:26 Adventist Group. And so they
17:28 are ministering and meeting
17:29 the needs of primarily the
17:31 First Nations. Eighty percent
17:33 of their population is
17:34 indigenous, the First Nations.
17:36 And so of course you can
17:37 imagine it's hard to transport
17:39 food up there, given the
17:41 climate and the distance.
17:43 >> Absolutely.
17:44 >> And so we're partnering

17:47 their food bank so they can
17:49 really be able to provide the
17:50 essential food items for their
17:52 communities respectively.
17:54 >> That's wonderful!
17:55 >> That is a big expense, but
