00:01 >> Did you know that if you had
00:02 a simple domino 00:04 that domino is capable of 00:06 knocking over another domino 00:08 one and a half times larger 00:10 than itself. 00:11 So if you started with a domino 00:13 just five millimetres tall and 00:16 one millimetre thick, 00:17 about the size of a Tic-Tac, 00:19 it would take just twenty-nine 00:21 progressively larger dominoes 00:23 to wipe out, get this 00:25 the Empire State Building. 00:27 >> And that first Tic-Tac-sized 00:29 domino is so small that it 00:31 needs to be set up 00:32 with tweezers. 00:34 >> The gravitational potential 00:36 energy or the energy stored by 00:37 balancing that domino on its 00:39 side comes from the domino's 00:41 mass and height, both of which 00:43 increase with every 00:45 successive domino. 00:47 >> In this demonstration by 00:48 physics professor, 00:50 Stephen Morris, from the 00:51 University of Toronto, 00:52 he uses thirteen dominoes 00:55 and the amplification of energy 00:57 from the beginning to the end 00:59 is two billion. 01:01 Think about what that means. 01:04 You put a little bit of energy 01:06 in at the beginning and you get 01:08 two billion times as much at 01:10 the end. 01:18 >> This is an amazing object 01:19 lesson to show us how much 01:21 potential energy each one of us 01:23 has in the power of choice. 01:26 You see, from the genesis of 01:28 humankind, everything hinged on 01:30 the freedom and power enhanced 01:33 in a decision. 01:35 >> From the moment your eyes 01:36 crack open in the morning, 01:38 you have decisions to make. 01:40 Should you get out of bed? 01:42 Or should you sleep in 01:43 for a few more minutes? 01:45 >> Even military leaders, they 01:47 tell their troops, "If you" 01:48 "want to change the world," 01:49 "start by making your bed." 01:51 And the Bible adds its weight 01:53 to this truth when it says: 02:01 We start every day with 02:02 work to do 02:04 and baby steps, Tic-Tac-sized, 02:06 small beginnings are the key to 02:09 success because they're really 02:11 are no small decisions. 02:13 Even a small decision like 02:15 making your bed is a habit that 02:18 can lead to a chain reaction of 02:20 successful, right decisions 02:22 throughout your day 02:24 and throughout your lifetime. 02:26 >> But it's your choice. 02:28 Are you going to make your bed 02:29 in the morning or not? 02:31 There are no small decisions, 02:33 you see. 02:34 Luke 16 verse 10 says: 02:42 Bigger decisions like being 02:44 able to buy a house or get 02:45 married will be affected by the 02:47 series of smaller choices 02:50 you've made in the past. 02:52 >> In the Bible, God offers you 02:54 the chance even if your faith 02:56 in Him is the size of, as Jesus 02:59 says, a little mustard seed, 03:01 to make the ultimate decision, 03:03 when He says: 03:15 God definitely wants you to 03:17 live an abundant, successful 03:19 life, not just now, 03:20 but eternally. 03:22 In today's program, we will 03:24 look at how every-day decisions 03:26 produce earth-shattering 03:29 outcomes. 03:30 ♪♪ 04:09 >> There are three men who have 04:10 become heroes to me. 04:11 Two were Canadian athletes and 04:13 one was born before I was and 04:15 yet he is still alive today. 04:17 >> So, Mike, who were these 04:19 three men? 04:19 >> Well, the two athletes were 04:21 Terry Fox and Paul Henderson. 04:23 >> So they were heroes for you? 04:24 >> Yeah, I think they were 04:26 heroes to most Canadians. 04:28 But what I admire most was how 04:30 they were so decisive. 04:32 They knew what they wanted 04:34 and they weren't afraid to 04:35 go for it. 04:37 >> What do you think made them 04:38 like that? 04:39 >> That's a good question. 04:40 Terry Fox and Paul Henderson 04:41 both lived so goal-oriented 04:44 because they both had a burning 04:46 desire to do one thing. 04:47 One thing for their country 04:50 and for the good of all. 04:51 And they both had very strong, 04:54 supportive family members who 04:56 believed in them. 04:57 >> From an early age, 04:58 I know Terry Fox wanted to be 05:00 an athlete 05:01 and even when he lost his right 05:02 leg to cancer 05:04 that didn't stop him. 05:06 He said it even made him 05:07 stronger and he wanted to help 05:09 other people who were also 05:11 suffering from cancer. 05:13 So he ran the Marathon of Hope 05:15 and he had the support of his 05:17 family and friends 05:19 and it became a chain reaction 05:21 where he got the support of the 05:22 whole country 05:23 and today there are Terry Fox 05:26 Runs all over the world 05:28 raising hundreds of millions 05:30 of dollars. 05:31 >> And Paul Henderson who is 05:33 best known for scoring that 05:35 winning goal in Game 8 of the 05:36 Summit Series, and I know you 05:38 remember that goal. 05:39 He also had a strong, 05:41 supportive family. 05:42 But beyond hockey, Paul made 05:44 significant, life-changing 05:46 decisions which we will let 05:48 Paul himself tell you about 05:50 in his own words 05:51 later in the program. 05:53 >> So, Mike, you were saying 05:54 there was three men 05:55 who were decisive. 05:56 Who was the third man? 05:58 >> Well, the third man, if you 05:59 haven't guess already, was very 06:02 goal-oriented because he had a 06:04 burning desire to do one thing. 06:07 But it wasn't to play hockey 06:09 or to run across Canada. 06:12 He also had a very strong, 06:14 supportive father who 06:16 believed in him. 06:17 >> So tell us his name! 06:18 >> OK, so this is it. 06:20 He is the man that we know 06:22 today as the Son of God, 06:24 Jesus Christ 06:25 and I first learned about Him 06:26 when someone gave me this Bible 06:29 and they challenged me to read 06:31 a chapter a day 06:32 and he said it would change my 06:35 life and the truth is, it did. 06:37 That's when Jesus became my 06:39 ultimate role-model, my hero, 06:41 my example, my friend. 06:43 From reading this Bible, 06:46 I learned that Jesus had one 06:48 burning desire. 06:49 The goal of His life was to 06:51 bless every human being with a 06:54 meaningful, abundant life, 06:56 eternal life. 06:57 >> And Jesus also had a very 06:59 strong, supportive father who 07:01 believed in Him. 07:02 >> Yes, He did. 07:04 There were two times during 07:06 Jesus' life on earth when His 07:08 Father spoke audibly the same 07:10 words to Him that the people 07:12 could actually hear His voice. 07:15 >> Both times are found in the 07:16 book of Matthew. 07:17 Here's the first one: 07:28 This verse is found in 07:30 Matthew 3, verse 17 07:32 at Jesus' baptism. 07:34 >> And the second time that God 07:35 the Father speaks audibly to 07:37 His Son the exact same words, 07:39 is found in Matthew 17, verse 5 07:42 at His transfiguration, which 07:43 says almost the same words: 07:54 >> These words must be 07:56 important because God repeated 07:58 the same words audibly twice. 08:01 Imagine God saying those words 08:03 to you personally. 08:06 You are my beloved child 08:08 in whom I am well pleased. 08:10 >> Wow, that would be amazing 08:11 to me because I didn't grow up 08:13 with my earthly father around, 08:16 but when I started to read this 08:18 Bible as a teenager, I decided 08:20 that I wanted to be 08:21 a child of God. 08:23 And when I chose 08:24 to accept Jesus 08:26 I knew these three things 08:27 and every child needs to know 08:29 these three things. 08:30 I knew number one, that God was 08:32 my eternal, heavenly Father. 08:34 Number two, I knew 08:36 that He loved me 08:38 and every child 08:39 needs to know that 08:39 and number three, I knew that 08:42 He was pleased with me. 08:44 And that made all the 08:45 difference in the world to know 08:47 that God was pleased with me. 08:49 So here's a question: 08:50 Do you know 08:52 that God is pleased with you? 08:55 >> Look at this very 08:56 encouraging quote from a book 08:58 on the life of Jesus called 08:59 The Desire of Ages: 09:13 After teaching high school for 09:15 so many years, I know that lots 09:17 of young people have a hard 09:19 time believing 09:20 that God is pleased with them. 09:22 >> But it's true. 09:24 God is well pleased with you. 09:26 >> Now some have said, 09:27 "No, God can't be pleased" 09:29 "with me." 09:30 >> No, God is pleased with you. 09:33 >> However, when God says He is 09:35 pleased me, that does not mean 09:37 He is pleased with my sin. 09:39 >> Mm-mm, God hates sin. 09:41 But you are not your sin. 09:44 >> God hates sin, but He loves 09:47 the sinner. 09:48 He loves you. 09:50 >> Yes, you see, God knows that 09:52 sin is the deadliest 09:54 of cancers. 09:55 So He is like an oncologist 09:57 whose goal is to eradicate 09:59 the cancer in order to 10:00 save the patient. 10:02 >> So when we say that God is 10:04 pleased with you, we are saying 10:06 you are not your sin. 10:09 Sin is not your identity. 10:11 You are a child of God. 10:13 That is your identity. 10:15 And God is pleased with you 10:18 as His beloved child. 10:20 Look at this affirmation from 10:22 God's word: 10:34 >> God loves you as His child 10:36 and He hates sin because sin 10:38 destroys the real you. 10:41 Think about it. 10:41 Take any sin, 10:42 take lying for example. 10:44 If you lie, 10:46 you are not being you. 10:48 All sin is really like that. 10:51 It destroys the real you. 10:53 But this leaves God with 10:56 a very big problem. 10:58 >> What problem? 10:59 >> It's a deep problem 11:01 and here it is: 11:08 >> So that which God hates the 11:10 most is sin. 11:11 >> Correct. 11:12 >> And that which God hates 11:14 the most, sin, is inside that 11:17 which God loves the most, which 11:20 is you and me, His children. 11:21 >> Yes. 11:23 Sin is like a deadly virus and 11:25 it's inside of each one of us. 11:27 But God's problem is even 11:29 bigger than that though. 11:31 >> It is? 11:32 >> Yes it is. 11:33 Here it is: 11:42 >> That is a bigger problem. 11:44 >> Much bigger. 11:45 >> That which God loves the 11:47 most, you and me, His children 11:50 we are in love with that which 11:51 God hates the most 11:53 which is sin. 11:54 >> Correct. 11:55 >> So God's big problem is 11:57 how does He get you and me 12:00 to not be in love with sin? 12:03 >> How does He get us to 12:04 exercise the power of choice to 12:07 willingly, decisively let go of 12:10 sin and never want to 12:11 touch it again? 12:12 >> It's really the same problem 12:14 as the father who loves his 12:16 teenage son 12:18 who is addicted to drugs. 12:20 The father hates the drugs, 12:21 he hates the addiction, 12:23 but he loves his son. 12:25 >> It's a big problem when you 12:27 love the very things that are 12:29 holding you back, enslaving you 12:32 and even destroying your life. 12:34 >> You hate what they 12:35 are doing to you, 12:37 but you can't let them go. 12:39 >> Anyone whose job it is to 12:41 help people knows that you 12:44 can't help anyone who is not 12:46 willing to be helped. 12:48 >> Right. 12:49 And here is the key 12:51 to being decisive. 12:52 Here is the key to changing 12:53 your life. 12:55 You have to discover that you 12:56 have an urgent need. 12:59 >> Yes, when you discover that 13:01 you have an urgent need, 13:03 you tend to become decisive 13:05 about resolving that need. 13:07 >> Look at all the people who 13:08 came to Jesus. 13:09 They all had urgent needs. 13:12 Let me take you back to 13:13 Paul Henderson, the Canadian 13:15 hockey legend who scored the 13:16 winning goal against the Soviets 13:18 in the Summit Series with 13:19 thirty-four seconds left on the 13:21 clock in Game 8. 13:23 Remember I said that he was 13:24 so decisive? 13:25 Well, he was so decisive about 13:27 his life until the success and 13:31 fame was not enough. 13:33 Listen to his story 13:35 in his own words: 13:40 >> Scoring the winning goal in 13:41 the last game with thirty-four 13:42 seconds left has given me 13:45 an incredible identity and 13:47 it's been a wonderful ride. 13:49 We really felt it was our way 13:50 of life against their way of 13:52 life back in '72 13:53 and so it was a wonderful, 13:54 satisfying feeling. 13:55 As a kid growing up, I figured 13:56 if you had money, you had a 13:57 great marriage, and you had a 13:59 career you really liked, 14:00 I mean, what else could 14:01 there be? 14:02 You have all those things then 14:02 you can go enjoy the good life. 14:04 And now I had all of those 14:06 things, now I was the 14:07 toast of the country, 14:08 but I knew there was something 14:09 missing and I would 14:10 say to my wife, 14:11 "There's something missing." 14:12 "There's an angst in my life." 14:14 A guy, the name of Mel Stevens, 14:15 knocked on my door one day and 14:16 asked me to work at his 14:17 hockey school. 14:18 I had no spiritual dimension to 14:20 my life at this point. 14:21 Well, he said to me, 14:22 "Paul, you learn to live" 14:23 "lightly and freely," 14:24 "but you've got to get to" 14:25 "know who Jesus is." 14:26 He said he prayed for me for 14:27 four years before he had enough 14:29 courage to come and 14:30 knock on my door 14:31 and it was really 14:31 interesting after I became a 14:32 Christian and became public, 14:34 I received letters from four 14:35 people that God had laid it on 14:37 their hearts to be praying for 14:38 me and they said, 14:39 "Paul, I just want to let you" 14:41 "know that God laid you on my" 14:42 "heart, but I've been praying" 14:43 "for you for four years." 14:45 You know, that absolutely 14:47 blew me away. 14:48 Now it took him two years 14:50 to help me to really grasp 14:52 and understand the things, 14:53 but the good news of that is, 14:55 taking that much time when 14:56 I became a Christian, 14:57 I've never taken a 14:58 backwards step. 14:59 I became convinced that Christ 15:01 was who He said He was 15:02 and He was worthy to follow. 15:03 We were in Birmingham, Alabama 15:05 and a guy by the name of 15:05 John Bradford got me into a 15:07 men's group and he became my 15:09 mentor for three years and he 15:11 modelled what it was to 15:13 have a dynamic relationship 15:14 with the Lord. 15:15 He was a very successful 15:16 businessman, 15:17 but he loved the Lord. 15:19 And then after three years the 15:20 pastor and John came to me 15:21 and says, "Paul, you need to 15:22 lead other people." 15:23 I can't do that. 15:24 I haven't been a Christian long 15:26 enough, but sometimes you need 15:27 people to have, you know, faith 15:29 in you. 15:29 And so in '85 I started with 15:31 three men in Toronto and 15:33 we grew it from there and 15:35 now we've got over 700 men 15:37 that meet weekly in small 15:38 groups and you work out what 15:40 does it mean to walk with the 15:41 Lord in a day-to-day basis. 15:43 And obviously trying to raise 15:44 up leaders. 15:45 And the really neat thing about 15:46 today is when I look over my 15:47 shoulder I can see some of the 15:48 guys that I've led to the Lord, 15:50 got them in groups and now 15:51 they're better leaders 15:52 than I am. 15:53 One of our best leaders, 15:54 one of our guys invited them 15:55 seven years in a row 15:57 before he came out. 15:58 He finally came out and now 15:59 he's just a dynamic leader. 16:01 Have an incredible influence in 16:03 the Oakville area. 16:04 You never give up. 16:05 You never know when the person 16:07 might be ready next. 16:08 And that's what I try to tell 16:10 all my friends. 16:11 When they invite people out to 16:12 events and their buddies don't 16:13 come, I said, "Don't give up." 16:15 "Invite them again next year." 16:16 It's so satisfying to look over 16:18 your shoulder and see 16:20 changed lives behind you. 16:22 Hopefully we can get 16:23 a bunch more and change 16:24 the whole country. 16:25 Christianity is a 16:27 dichotomy in a lot of ways. 16:29 It's sort of an oxymoron. 16:30 You want to get rich? 16:31 Give it away. 16:32 You want to enjoy your life? 16:33 Give it to the Lord. 16:34 There's that little song, 16:35 "All for Jesus, all I am" 16:37 "and have and ever hope to be" 16:38 "All my ambitions," 16:40 "hopes and plans." 16:41 "I surrender these" 16:42 "and to your plans." 16:43 God has called us to be 16:44 ambassadors and that's what 16:46 I've chosen to do. 16:47 Initially, I thought I was 16:48 making a tremendous sacrifice 16:51 to come into ministry 16:53 and, you know, after a while 16:54 you recognize you can never 16:55 sacrifice the Lord. 16:57 He always goes above and beyond 16:59 anything you could ever give. 17:00 I've told my wife, "When I 17:02 start to lose it, just take" 17:03 "me by the hand and say," 17:05 'Paul, maybe we should just' 17:06 'go for a little walk here.'" 17:08 But as long as I can 17:09 or I'm effective, 17:11 then I would love to continue 17:13 just doing what I'm doing. 17:14 And so I just-- 17:16 I'm anticipative of the future. 17:18 I'm anticipative of the 17:19 opportunities that's 17:21 going to bring and so 17:22 take today and give it your 17:24 best shot and wake up tomorrow, 17:26 do the same thing tomorrow. 17:33 >> What impresses me about 17:35 Paul Henderson's story is how 17:37 Mel Stevens saw the urgent need 17:39 of a professional hockey player 17:42 he didn't even know personally. 17:44 He saw how unhappy he was 17:46 and he had enough compassion 17:48 to first start praying for him, 17:51 relying on God's power before 17:53 he decided to kick it up a 17:55 notch and knock on Paul's door, 17:58 give him a Bible, and lead him 18:00 to Jesus. 18:01 >> You know, Mel's decisive 18:03 actions that day remind me of 18:05 your decisive actions when our 18:07 friend Daniella's daughter 18:08 was dying 18:10 and you had called me, 18:12 I just came back from work 18:13 and I remember her 18:14 little baby's name was Amber 18:16 and I came home from work one 18:18 day and you said to me, 18:20 "Amber is dying." 18:21 Which I knew already, 18:22 but you said, 18:23 "You have to do something!" 18:24 I'm like, "What am I supposed" 18:26 "to do? I'm not a doctor and" 18:27 "the doctors can't heal her" 18:29 "and I'm not God so" 18:30 "what am I supposed to do?" 18:32 >> Amber was two years old, 18:34 but she looked like a newborn 18:35 baby because her digestive 18:37 system did not work properly 18:39 from the time she was born. 18:41 So she was in the hospital 18:43 more than she was at home. 18:45 One day I called Amber's mother 18:47 and Amber's grandmother 18:49 answered the phone. 18:50 She told me that the doctors 18:52 told her Amber would likely die 18:54 overnight because her little 18:56 body was not able to take up 18:58 any more nutrition. 19:00 So when you came home from 19:02 work that night, I say to you, 19:05 "You have to do something!" 19:06 >> And what was I 19:07 supposed to do? 19:08 You told me, "Oh, why don't" 19:09 "you do an anointing?" 19:10 I'm like, "I can't do an" 19:11 "anointing because" 19:12 " we have to get permission" 19:13 "from the parents." 19:14 >> So I immediately called the 19:16 grandmother and she said, 19:17 "You have my permission to" 19:19 "anoint her because the" 19:20 "doctors have given up hope." 19:22 And she hoped 19:24 that it would work. 19:25 >> So I called the head elder 19:27 of our church. 19:28 It was like eleven o'clock at 19:29 night and I asked Wally if he 19:31 could meet me at the entrance 19:32 of the hospital. 19:33 He agreed to do that and so 19:34 the two of us, we walked into 19:36 the hospital to that upstairs 19:39 intensive care ward and I asked 19:41 the nurse on duty where Amber 19:43 was and she pointed to this 19:45 little baby who was basically 19:47 skin and bones. 19:49 She could hardly breathe. 19:51 And Wally and I immediately 19:52 looked into each other's eyes 19:54 and they were filled 19:55 with tears, 19:56 mine and his as well. 19:58 And I opened up my Bible and I 20:00 began to read the following 20:03 words from the book of James 20:04 chapter 5, verses 14 and 15 20:06 and it says this: 20:24 And then I said to Wally, 20:26 "Well, here's the oil" 20:27 "and I want you to pray first" 20:29 "and then I will pray next and" 20:32 "I will anoint Amber with oil." 20:34 "And I believe if it is God's" 20:36 "will then Amber will be" 20:38 "healed this evening." 20:39 "What do you think, Wally?" 20:41 And so he said to me, 20:42 "Well, I agree" 20:43 "if it is God's will." 20:45 And then he started praying 20:47 through his tears and 20:48 afterwards I was praying 20:49 through my tears, too 20:51 and before I finished praying, 20:54 Amber opened her eyes 20:56 and she raised her little head 20:58 and it made me open my eyes 21:00 as well and she looked at me. 21:02 And she looked as if she wanted 21:04 to say something to me. 21:06 And then she put her little 21:07 head down and 21:09
