00:12 >> Or would you write that 00:13 book that you're always 00:14 talking about? 00:15 You know, "I'm gonna write" 00:16 "that book one day." 00:17 >> The toughest part of any 00:19 achievement is overcoming 00:21 your fear. 00:22 If I knew beyond the shadow 00:24 of a doubt I could not fail, 00:26 I would fly. 00:28 >> If I knew beyond a shadow 00:29 of a doubt I could not fail, I 00:31 know I would fly as well, but 00:33 don't tell our daughters that 00:34 because I tell them they can 00:35 do anything they wanna do 00:37 except go sky diving. 00:38 >> So why are you do afraid of 00:40 sky diving? 00:41 >> We'll talk about that later 00:42 in the program. 00:44 >> OK, well, I want to tell 00:47 you about a crazy Canadian 00:49 blogger by the name of 00:50 Kyle McDonald who attempted 00:52 something audacious. 00:54 [Mike] One day, Kyle McDonald, 00:55 he looked down on his desk 00:57 and what did he see? 00:58 A red paperclip and he thought 00:59 to himself, 01:00 "I remember this game" 01:01 "called Bigger and Better" 01:04 "where you trade something" 01:05 "that is small for something" 01:07 "bigger and better and then" 01:08 "you repeat." 01:09 >> He said to himself, 01:11 "I wonder what would happen" 01:12 "if I took this red paperclip" 01:15 "and tried to trade it." 01:17 "What could I end up with" 01:19 "after 12 months of trading?" 01:22 >> So what did he have 01:23 to lose? 01:24 Nothing, a red paperclip? 01:25 That's nothing. 01:26 He knew he could not fail. 01:28 So he posted this picture of a 01:31 red paperclip on a website 01:33 called Craig's List and two 01:36 girls offered him a pen shaped 01:38 like a fish which was bigger 01:40 and better than his dinky 01:41 little red paperclip so he 01:43 gladly took it. 01:44 >> Next, someone offered him a 01:46 doorknob with a crazy face on 01:48 it in exchange for the 01:49 fish pen. 01:51 Then he received a camping 01:53 stove for the doorknob. 01:54 >> After each successive 01:56 trade, Kyle McDonald received 01:58 something bigger and better 02:00 than what he had before. 02:01 >> Some items he received and 02:04 traded where a snowmobile, 02:06 a trip for two to the Rockies, 02:08 a moving truck, and one year's 02:11 free rent in someone's house in 02:13 Phoenix, Arizona. 02:14 >> Ah, that's not bad, eh? 02:15 I think I would be really 02:16 happy with that. 02:18 I mean, who wouldn't be happy 02:20 with Phoenix, Arizona for one 02:22 year, especially if 02:22 you're Canadian. 02:23 Phoenix is nice and warm in 02:25 the winter. 02:26 >> Mm hmm, but Kyle was only 02:28 nine months into this. 02:30 Nine months before he had 02:32 started with one red paperclip 02:34 and now he had one year's free 02:36 rent in someone's house in 02:38 Phoenix, Arizona. 02:39 >> But that wasn't good enough 02:40 for Kyle McDonald. 02:42 He wanted to see how much 02:43 bigger and better 02:44 it could get. 02:45 >> Finally, after 14 online 02:48 trades over the course of a 02:49 year, he ended up with a 02:51 two-story farmhouse in 02:54 Kipling, Saskatchewan. 02:55 [Mike] Wow, how's that 02:56 for success? 02:57 Playing a game of Bigger and 02:58 Better starting with a little 03:00 red paperclip and ending up 03:02 with a two-story farmhouse, 03:03 which he turned into a very 03:04 successful little restaurant 03:06 called The Red Paperclip 03:08 Cottage Cafe. 03:10 >> What an amazing story of 03:11 faith and ingenuity. 03:13 Starting with a red paperclip 03:15 and ending up with a two-story 03:18 farm house in one year. 03:20 >> So what would you attempt 03:22 if you knew that you could 03:23 not fail? 03:24 Let's take this into the realm 03:26 of faith in God and trusting 03:28 His promises. 03:30 >> What would you attempt for 03:32 God if you knew you would 03:33 not fail? 03:35 The Bible assures us: 03:40 [Mike] So stick with us as we 03:42 explore how you can conquer 03:44 your limitations and do what 03:47 you thought was impossible. 03:50 ♪♪ 04:27 [ominous music] 04:38 >> So I used to have a serious 04:39 fear of heights. 04:40 >> And that's why you don't 04:41 want our daughters to go 04:42 sky diving. 04:43 >> Correct. 04:44 Let me ask you a question. 04:46 Are any of you afraid 04:47 of heights? 04:48 This was once my greatest fear. 04:49 When I was 25 years old, my-- 04:52 one of my older brothers, his 04:53 name was Pete, who was 32 at 04:55 the time, he was working in 04:56 Nelson, British Columbia on 04:59 the night shift and it was for 05:01 a company called Cominco. 05:02 It was extremely cold outside. 05:05 The wind was blowing and the 05:06 snow was filling the air. 05:09 He was bundled up and he was 05:11 working more than fifty feet 05:13 in the air, standing on a few 05:15 wooden boards that were 05:17 sheathed in black ice. 05:19 He had a harness, a safety 05:21 belt around his waist, but he 05:24 had to move to the next work 05:27 station and in order to do so 05:29 he would have to unhook his 05:31 safety belt, the clips, and 05:33 then he would reconnect them 05:35 to the next workstation. 05:38 And so he unhooked the clips 05:39 and then he inched his way 05:41 along that ice-covered 05:43 scaffolding and the snow blew 05:46 around his head and wind beat 05:48 against his back and just as 05:50 he was about to reconnect 05:52 himself, his foot slipped from 05:54 underneath him and he 05:56 plummeted to the ground, 05:58 slamming into some solid metal 06:01 pipes and beams as he fell. 06:03 As his safety helmet was 06:06 thrown from his head, he hit 06:08 his head on a number of pipes, 06:10 steel pipes, as he was falling 06:11 down and he landed on the 06:12 ground and there was a young 06:14 man there and he was a vibrant 06:16 Christian and he ran to his 06:17 side and he was the first man 06:20 on the spot. 06:21 And he looked at my brother, 06:23 Pete's, injuries and he could 06:25 see that he was so badly 06:27 injured and he called for 06:29 help and as some of the other 06:30 guys contacted the medical 06:33 team, he came back to the site 06:36 and this Christian young man, 06:37 he returned to my brother's 06:39 side and he began to talk to 06:40 him about Jesus. 06:42 He asked my brother, Pete, if 06:44 he knew who Jesus was and Pete 06:46 said, "yes," and then he asked 06:48 Pete if he was saved and my 06:50 brother, Pete, said 06:51 he wanted to be. 06:53 And so the young man asked him 06:56 if he could pray for my brother. 06:58 And so Pete said that, "Yeah," 07:01 "that would be OK." 07:02 And so the guy started praying 07:04 for my brother and my brother 07:06 accepted Jesus as his personal 07:09 saviour that evening. 07:12 He was 32 years old 07:15 and he died shortly after 07:18 that prayer. 07:20 I became extremely 07:22 afraid of heights. 07:24 Before I was never afraid of 07:26 heights, but after my 07:29 brother's death, it kind of 07:30 sparked this serious 07:32 fear of heights. 07:34 >> Mm hmm, oh, that really does 07:35 make sense now. 07:37 >> But the story of my fear of 07:39 heights doesn't end there. 07:42 A friend of mine found out 07:43 about my fear and he told me 07:45 that we needed to go rock 07:47 climbing together. 07:49 And I wasn't so sure, but rock 07:51 climbing was his specialty 07:53 so I trusted him. 07:55 It was just he and myself and 07:58 the photos that he took 08:00 revealed not how I was 08:02 feeling inside. 08:03 In fact, for him to get me to 08:06 a spot just on the edge of 08:08 the cliff took him more than 08:11 an hour and I would just stand 08:13 there with my feet just 08:15 planted to the ground and I 08:17 had this harness around my 08:18 waist and, Spencer, the name 08:20 of my friend, he would-- 08:22 he knew that I was so scared 08:24 and to try and calm me down he 08:26 said, "It's alright," 08:27 "it's alright, we don't have" 08:28 "to go rock climbing today" 08:29 "or descending down the" 08:31 "rock face." 08:32 "Just leave it," 08:33 "just forget about it." 08:34 But I insisted that I had to 08:36 overcome this fear. 08:38 And so I asked him every 08:40 possible question about 08:42 the equipment. 08:43 "How safe was your equipment?" 08:45 "How many people have you" 08:46 "dropped in the past?" 08:47 and "What did you think" 08:49 "about my chances of" 08:50 "surviving that day." 08:52 And he was very patient and 08:55 when all of my questions were 08:57 answered to my satisfaction, 09:00 I went over the edge. 09:03 And so as I was going over the 09:06 bottom-- to the bottom, he had 09:07 a camera down there and it was 09:09 capturing some of 09:10 these images. 09:12 So these are some of the shots 09:13 from his camera. 09:15 Does this cause any of you to 09:16 have butterflies in 09:17 your stomach? 09:18 It certainly did me 09:19 at the time. 09:21 And I guarantee you that I 09:23 prayed all the way down 09:24 to the bottom. 09:26 I repeated the words, " I can" 09:27 "do all things through Christ" 09:29 "Who strengthens me." 09:31 >> I can assure you that when 09:32 it comes to dealing with 09:34 heights now, my husband is a 09:36 lot better than he was then. 09:38 It is amazing how he is able 09:40 to walk on swinging bridges, 09:42 climb ladders and trees, and 09:44 even climb mountains and not 09:46 feel paralyzed as he once did. 09:49 It really does come down to 09:50 this one thought: 09:57 And when your mind is renewed 09:59 as it says in Romans 12, 10:00 verse 2, you are transformed. 10:03 When you change the way you 10:05 look at things, the things you 10:06 look at change. 10:08 You see, when Michael's mind 10:11 was controlled by fear, he was 10:12 stuck, paralyzed by the 10:14 thought of rock climbing. 10:16 But when he changed the way he 10:18 looked at rock climbing, it 10:19 was no longer fearful to him. 10:22 >> There's a song we want you 10:23 to listen to entitled 10:25 Wonderful Peace presented by 10:27 Fountainview Academy Orchestra 10:28 and Singers. 10:30 Wonderful Peace, that is what 10:32 God gave me in place 10:34 of my fears. 10:37 ♪♪ 11:03 ♪Far away in the depths 11:07 ♪of my spirit tonight 11:12 ♪Rolls a melody 11:16 ♪sweeter than psalm 11:21 ♪In celestial-like strains 11:26 ♪it unceasingly falls 11:31 ♪O'er my soul like an 11:33 ♪infinite calm 11:41 ♪Peace, peace 11:45 ♪wonderful peace 11:49 ♪Coming down from 11:52 ♪the Father above 11:58 ♪Sweep over my spirit 12:03 ♪forever, I pray 12:08 ♪In fathomless billows 12:12 ♪of love 12:18 ♪♪ 12:29 ♪What a treasure I have 12:33 ♪in this wonderful peace 12:38 ♪Buried deep in 12:40 ♪my innermost soul 12:46 ♪So secure that no power 12:51 ♪can mine it away 12:55 ♪While the years 12:57 ♪of eternity roll 13:04 ♪♪ 13:16 ♪Weary soul without gladness 13:20 ♪or comfort or rest 13:24 ♪Passing down the rough 13:27 ♪pathway of time 13:33 ♪Make the Saviour your friend 13:37 ♪ere the shadows grow dark 13:41 ♪Oh accept of this 13:44 ♪peace so sublime 13:51 ♪Peace, peace 13:55 ♪wonderful peace 13:58 ♪Coming down from 14:01 ♪the Father above 14:07 ♪Sweep over my spirit 14:12 ♪forever, I pray 14:20 ♪In fathomless billows 14:25 ♪of love 14:40 >> It really is miraculous 14:42 what God can do and how He can 14:44 replace our fear 14:46 with His peace. 14:47 >> And that's what He did with 14:49 your fear of heights. 14:50 >> Yes, He did, He truly did. 14:53 Well, you know this story. 14:55 A dusty old shepherd goes 14:57 looking for his lost sheep and 14:59 coming around the corner, he 15:01 meets God in a burning bush. 15:05 We find the story in the Bible 15:07 in Exodus chapters 3 and 4. 15:11 >> God said to that dusty old 15:13 Shephard whose name is Moses, 15:42 >> Then Moses asks God in 15:43 Exodus 4, verse 1: 16:03 "It's just an old stick" 16:05 "that I use to herd sheep." 16:07 It's like he's saying, 16:08 "It's nothing." 16:09 "It's just a useless old" 16:11 "red paperclip." 16:13 >> But look at what the Bible 16:14 says in Hebrews 11, verse 3. 16:26 In other words, the Bible is 16:28 telling us that God created 16:31 everything out of nothing. 16:34 >> At least Moses had a stick 16:36 in his hand and Kyle McDonald 16:37 started with a red paperclip. 16:39 But God made everything 16:41 out of nothing. 16:43 He started with thin air. 16:45 >> When we place our trust in 16:47 God, we come to Him and say, 16:49 "Look at my life." 16:51 "I'm such a mess." 16:53 "I'm not good at anything." 16:55 And we have a list. 16:56 The list goes on and 16:57 on and on. 16:58 >> But just like Kyle 17:00 McDonald, you are not alone. 17:04 >> Believe it or not, besides 17:05 God, there are other people in 17:07 this world who are willing to 17:09 help you towards living a life 17:11 that is much bigger and better 17:13 than the life you are 17:14 now living. 17:15 >> So here's how most people 17:17 understand what happens when 17:19 you come to God and God comes 17:20 into your life. 17:21 You put your head down and you 17:23 read your Bible and you live 17:25 like, well, the Lone Ranger. 17:27 >> Who's the Lone Ranger? 17:29 >> The Lone Ranger is actually 17:30 a fictional masked cowboy who 17:33 fought against outlaws in the 17:34 Old West. 17:36 He was a solitary figure and 17:39 he did everything alone. 17:40 Except, it's kind of ironic, 17:42 he did have a friend whose 17:43 name was Tonto. 17:46 >> There is something called 17:47 the Lone Ranger Syndrome which 17:49 is the belief that we need to 17:51 do everything ourselves. 17:53 >> So if we apply the 17:55 Lone Ranger Syndrome to 17:58 Christianity, it is a belief 18:00 in a false efficiency. 18:03 A belief that if we do 18:05 everything ourselves, we will 18:07 get it done better, 18:08 quicker, faster. 18:10 [Rene] The reality is, every 18:12 Lone Ranger needs a Tonto. 18:15 [Mike] Yeah, Adam had Eve. 18:17 [René] The patriarchs Abraham, 18:18 Isaac, and Jacob had their 18:20 life partners Sarah, Rebekah, 18:22 and Rachel. 18:23 [Mike] And Moses had the 18:24 support of his brother, Aaron. 18:26 [René] And Daniel had the 18:28 support of his three friends 18:29 in Babylon. 18:30 >> And the Canadian blogger, 18:32 Kyle McDonald, didn't make it 18:35 on his own either. 18:37 >> No, he had the support of a 18:39 lot of other people who were 18:40 willing to help him make his 18:42 dream come true, turning his 18:44 red paperclip into 18:45 a restaurant. 18:47 >> God knows that we need 18:49 each other. 18:50 [René] And He designed us with 18:52 a need to work together. 18:55 [Mike] When we work together, 18:56 we work better, smarter, 18:59 and achieve more. 19:00 Did you know that one massive 19:04 Belgian Draft horse can pull 19:06 up to 2000 pounds? 19:08 >> Mm hmm. 19:09 However, if two horses who are 19:12 complete strangers are 19:14 harnessed together, they can 19:16 pull, now get this: 19:18 12,000 pounds! 19:21 [Mike] Wow! 19:22 That's 6 times the weight one 19:24 horse can pull on its own. 19:25 >> Mm hmm. 19:27 Yes, we call that "synergy." 19:28 >> Synergy is when both horses 19:30 working together can pull a 19:32 greater weight than the two 19:34 horses can pull on their own 19:35 or separately. 19:37 >> But there's more. 19:38 If two horses are raised and 19:40 trained together to pull and 19:42 think as one, they can haul 19:44 up to 16,000 pounds. 19:47 >> Wow, how is that possible? 19:48 >> Well, I don't know. 19:49 I'm not a draft horse, but I 19:52 do know that when I work alone 19:55 I'm not half as driven as when 19:57 I work in a team. 19:59 >> Mmm. Ecclesiastes 20:00 chapter 4, verse 9 tells 20:01 us that... 20:07 >> The Bible encourages you to 20:09 strive to work together as a 20:11 member of a team within a 20:12 united group of believers 20:14 called the church. 20:15 >> Together we can achieve 20:17 much more than we can 20:19 achieve separately. 20:20 In Hebrews 10, verse 25 we are 20:23 encouraged with these words: 20:35 >> There's an old hymn, 20:37 Blessed Be the Tie That Binds 20:40 and we want to share that song 20:41 with you right now. 20:46 ♪Blessed be the tie 20:50 ♪that binds 20:54 ♪Our hearts in 20:56 ♪Christian love 21:00 ♪The fellowship 21:03 ♪of kindred minds 21:07 ♪Is like to that above 21:14 ♪Before our Father's throne 21:19 ♪We pour our ardent prayers 21:25 ♪Our fears, our hopes 21:27 ♪our aims are one 21:30 ♪Our comforts and our cares 21:36 ♪We share our mutual woes 21:43 ♪Our mutual burdens bear 21:49 ♪And often for 21:52 ♪each other flows 21:55 ♪The sympathizing tear 22:02 ♪When we asunder part 22:07 ♪It gives us inward pain 22:12 ♪But we shall still 22:15 ♪be joined in heart 22:18 ♪And hope to meet again 22:28 >> As a member of the church, 22:29 God places something 22:31 in your hand. 22:32 It's called a talent. 22:33 And we all get a different 22:35 number of talents. 22:36 >> So Kyle McDonald started 22:38 with a red paperclip and 22:40 traded it for something bigger 22:42 and better and he wound up 22:43 with a two-story farm house. 22:46 >> And God called Moses to be 22:48 a mighty leader when Moses 22:51 felt like he could do nothing 22:53 but herd sheep and God asked 22:56 him one big question. 22:57 Here's the big question: 22:58 "What is that in your hand?" 23:00 >> And that is a big question. 23:02 What's in your hand? 23:05 What has God placed within 23:07 your sphere of influence? 23:08 Or what kind of talents 23:10 do you have? 23:12 You know, in Matthew 25 it 23:14 says God gives everyone at 23:16 least one talent. 23:18 >> That's true. 23:19 Some get more, like five, 23:21 another gets two, and someone 23:23 else gets one. 23:26 >> Basically, God gives us all 23:27 three assets. 23:29 Number one: time, 23:30 number two: energy, 23:33 and number three: money. 23:42 >> Why? 23:44 Why did he bury his talent and 23:45 the other two invested and 23:47 multiplied their talents just 23:48 like Kyle McDonald who turned 23:50 his red paperclip into a 23:53 two-story farm house. 23:55 Matthew 25:25 gives us a clue. 23:58 The one who buried the 24:00 talent said, 24:06 >> What?
