00:41 >> Hello and thank you
00:42 for joining us on 00:44 It Is Written Canada. 00:45 Our guest today was once a shy 00:48 young person who resisted the 00:50 call of God upon her life. 00:52 But today Charlee Blabey is a 00:55 chaplain and a Bible teacher 00:57 at a Christian high school, 00:59 Kingsway College in 01:00 Oshawa, Ontario. 01:03 >> Charlee, thank you so much 01:05 for joining us today. 01:06 We are really looking forward 01:08 to hearing your story. 01:09 >> Well, thank you both so 01:10 much for having me on 01:12 It Is Written today. 01:14 >> So let's go back to 01:15 your beginnings. 01:17 Tell us about your childhood 01:18 and your siblings and 01:20 your parents. 01:21 >> Alright. 01:22 I was born in Kingston, 01:23 Ontario, that is about two and 01:24 a half hours east of here. 01:27 When I was born there were 01:29 some complications with the 01:31 pregnancy towards the end and 01:34 as a result they had to rush 01:38 me down to the NICU. 01:40 And so they came to my dad, 01:41 my mom, due to the drugs, she 01:43 was fairly out of it so they 01:45 came to my dad and they said, 01:46 "We need a name for the baby." 01:48 And so he, without much 01:51 thought, said, "Charlie," 01:52 "her name will be Charlie." 01:54 And the reason being, when he 01:56 was fifteen years old his 01:59 father had passed away and his 02:01 father's name was Charles or 02:02 "Charlie" as everybody 02:03 called him. 02:05 So he had always decided, 02:06 "I will call my firstborn," he 02:08 was thinking "son, Charlie." 02:10 And so the spelling of the 02:12 name was changed when my mom 02:14 came to, it was made more 02:15 feminine by adding two e's 02:17 instead of an "ie" and from 02:20 that point on I've always 02:21 been "Charlee." 02:23 >> That's super cool 'cause I 02:24 was told that you're, 02:26 you know, I'm gonna meet this 02:27 chaplain, Charlie, so I'm 02:28 expecting a guy and then I met 02:30 you and I thought, 02:31 "That was great," 02:32 "that's a great name for" 02:33 "a girl." 02:34 >> Yes, it's grown on me, 02:35 you know. 02:36 It's given some people grief 02:38 in, you know, when I worked in 02:40 the nursing home, they-- there 02:42 were some residents that, you 02:43 know, were bound, bent, and 02:44 determined that this had to be 02:45 a male's name and only a 02:46 male's name. 02:47 When I went to high school, 02:49 they put me in the boy's dorm 02:50 originally, as well, and so 02:51 these were all, you know, 02:52 clerical errors that are 02:53 quickly fixed later on. 02:56 I was the oldest of four. 02:59 So there was myself then my 03:01 brother, Michael, then Evan 03:02 and then a younger sister, 03:04 Jaime and we all grew up out 03:07 in the country, we spent a lot 03:09 of time playing in the woods, 03:10 playing with each other. 03:12 My mom, she was raised an 03:15 Adventist, but in her 20's she 03:18 walked away from God, walked 03:21 away from the religion and it 03:23 was during this time that she 03:24 met my dad. 03:26 My dad had also been raised in 03:29 the United Church, but when 03:31 his father had passed away, 03:32 she had walked away from 03:34 Christianity, period. 03:35 Actually dabbled more with 03:36 Spiritualism as result, as a 03:38 means to, I think, to try to 03:39 reconnect with her husband. 03:41 [René] Mm-hmm. 03:42 And so when my dad and my mom 03:46 met, neither of them were 03:48 attending church, obviously, 03:49 but my mom, when she became 03:52 pregnant with me, decided that 03:54 she wanted to reconnect with 03:56 God because now she was 03:58 responsible for another person 04:01 and so she felt like that was 04:02 her obligation and so she 04:04 started re-attending church. 04:07 My dad, though, he still 04:08 wanted nothing to do. 04:09 He said, you know, 04:10 "If this is what you want," 04:11 "then you do you." 04:13 And so she would go and 04:15 occasionally he would join 04:16 her, but he was still very 04:18 much into the drinking and 04:19 partying scene. 04:21 Several years passed. 04:23 By now I was about two and a 04:25 half, three years old when 04:27 they came back from a wedding 04:28 one evening and when he 04:31 returned he was covered in 04:32 blood from having been in a 04:33 fight and he'd been drinking 04:34 very heavy which he did fairly 04:37 regularly and he woke up the 04:40 next morning, he was laying on 04:41 the floor, he was covered in, 04:43 you know, dried blood and his 04:44 own vomit at this time and 04:47 myself and my brother, 04:48 we were crying, 04:50 thinking that he was dead. 04:51 So when he woke up and came 04:52 to, he determined at that 04:54 point that that was not the 04:55 life that he wanted to live 04:58 and so he walked away 05:00 from drinking. 05:03 He didn't-- he slowly began at 05:05 that point to go to church, 05:08 but it wasn't until I was 05:09 about nine after we attended 05:10 the Net '96 series with Mark 05:12 Finley that both myself and my 05:14 dad decided that we would be 05:16 baptized and so we were 05:18 in March 1st of 1997. 05:21 >> That's very special... 05:22 >> It was. 05:23 >> ...to be baptized with 05:24 your dad. 05:25 >> And how old were you at the 05:26 time then, Charlee? 05:29 >> So I was nine years old 05:30 when I was baptized. 05:32 [René] OK, when you were 05:33 baptized, OK. 05:34 So, Charlee, I believe your 05:36 mother and your grandmother 05:38 were real women of prayer, 05:40 real prayer warriors. 05:42 Can you tell us how they 05:44 influenced your life? 05:46 >> For sure. 05:47 The biggest imprint, I would 05:48 say, on my life was a moment 05:51 with my grandmother, one that 05:53 she probably was unaware of in 05:56 that there had been a conflict 05:58 of sorts that happened 05:59 downstairs. 06:00 At the time, my grandma would 06:02 have probably been going into 06:04 the early stages of what we 06:06 later would learn was 06:07 Alzheimer's. 06:08 And so she was forgetting a 06:11 lot of things and this made 06:12 people upset. 06:14 And so something had gone down 06:15 and there was a lot of yelling 06:17 and I remember going upstairs 06:18 just to see 06:19 if she was OK. 06:22 And I found her, as I walked 06:23 to the top of the stairs, 06:24 she was kneeling 06:25 by her bed, praying. 06:27 And that just always really 06:29 stuck with me that, you know, 06:31 despite whatever anger or hurt 06:33 she was feeling, that she 06:35 would turn to God in prayer 06:37 at that moment. 06:39 My mom, to this day, she is 06:40 still very much a woman of 06:42 prayer as well. 06:43 She currently runs a 06:44 greenhouse every spring and 06:46 into the summer and she 06:48 absolutely loves meeting with 06:50 the customers and talking to 06:52 them and hearing their 06:53 stories, but more so, she likes 06:55 to find out how she can 06:56 pray for them. 06:57 And so she has lists upon 06:59 lists where she will go every 07:00 morning, she has what's known 07:02 as her prayer room and she 07:04 will, you know, spend her 07:06 first hour or so praying for 07:08 all these individuals that she 07:10 collects and prays for. 07:13 And so knowing how much prayer 07:16 has impacted their lives, 07:19 it can't help but impact 07:20 mine as well. 07:22 >> And there was a time when 07:24 your mother really 07:26 needed prayer. 07:27 >> Yes, indeed. 07:28 So it was December of 1996, 07:30 right after my dad and I had 07:32 decided to be baptized 07:33 actually, and at the church, 07:35 the church decided that we 07:37 were going to rent a rink and 07:39 we were going to go 07:40 ice skating. 07:41 And so a lot of the younger 07:42 families came out and we were 07:43 all, you know, laced up and 07:45 skating on the rink. 07:46 And there was one young guy 07:48 that, you know, he worked out 07:50 a lot, he had played hockey 07:52 all the time and he decided 07:55 for whatever reason that he 07:56 would take the net and put it 07:57 towards centre ice and so 07:59 then he skated back and he 08:00 was shooting towards centre 08:01 ice, the problem being, 08:04 of course, that everybody else 08:05 is skating behind him. 08:07 And so I remember I was 08:09 skating over on the side and I 08:11 looked and I saw a group of 08:12 people all huddled. 08:14 And I remember thinking to 08:16 myself, "Oh, there's some" 08:17 "sort of a weird group hug or" 08:19 "something's going on." 08:21 So I skated over and 08:22 discovered my mom lying in a 08:24 heap on the ice. 08:27 What had happened was she had 08:28 been skating with my younger 08:29 sister, who was about four at 08:30 the time, and so she was bent 08:33 over top of my sister, helping 08:35 her skate, when the young man 08:38 had shot the puck, missed the 08:40 net and the puck had hit her 08:43 just above the temple. 08:45 And so, of course, she was 08:47 rushed to the hospital right 08:49 away and when she arrived 08:51 there, number one, they said 08:53 had it been just a little bit 08:55 lower she would have been 08:56 killed instantly. 08:57 But as a result, they said, 08:59 you know, "You're more than" 09:01 "likely going to suffer from" 09:02 "seizure or a number of" 09:03 "different things that could" 09:04 "happen as a result." 09:05 She was very sick. 09:07 She spent a while in hospital 09:09 and was finally allowed 09:10 to go home. 09:11 And there were certainly a lot 09:13 of prayers, both my 09:14 grandparents, her parents, 09:16 were both individuals that 09:18 prayed for everybody. 09:20 And as a result of this, 09:24 she was healed. 09:27 To this day she does suffer 09:29 some dizzy spells, but 09:30 everything that they told her 09:31 could potentially and would 09:33 more than likely happen has 09:35 not and so we're just very 09:37 thankful to God for that, 09:39 you know, His leading through 09:40 that situation. 09:41 And so as a result, she was 09:43 able to attend, you know, 09:45 when my dad and I were both 09:46 baptized in March. 09:47 [Mike] Wow. 09:48 >> Really answered everyone's 09:50 prayers 'cause there was 09:51 probably, like you said, a lot 09:53 of people praying for her. 09:55 >> Yes. 09:56 >> And God pulled through 09:57 with another-- with a miracle! 09:59 >> Yes. 10:00 >> I was a miracle, wow. 10:02 >> So this is a beautiful story 10:05 and it's really all about 10:06 Jesus, so we're gonna pause 10:08 for a moment and listen to 10:10 years old, Dad started to slow 14:14 down a bit. 14:15 He was constantly in the 14:17 bathroom, he was having a lot 14:19 of problems and when he would 14:21 go to see the doctor, she 14:22 would tell weekend before the 15:06 surgery, there was a couple 15:07 that had come to the church 15:09 and their whole talk was on 15:11 prayer and the way that prayer 15:12 really can change things and 15:14 the way the God really does 15:15 work through prayer. 15:16 And so as they were talking, 15:19 they heard about my dad's 15:21 situation and they called him 15:22 forward and they said, 15:23 "We wanna pray for you." 15:24 And so everybody came and they 15:26 all prayed over him, 15:27 laid hands on him and 15:28 prayed over him. 15:30 So when he went in for the 15:32 surgery later that week, they 15:34 opened him up and they were 15:37 astounded at what they found. 15:39 So when they met with Dad 15:40 after, he said, "Give it to" 15:41 "me straight, Doc." 15:43 "I wanna know," you know, 15:44 "were you able to get it all?" 15:46 And he said, "You know, Ted," 15:47 "we opened you up and the" 15:49 "cancer that had spread" 15:51 "through the walls of the" 15:52 "colon was all neatly witness, too, to the doctors, 16:34 you know, when they opened him 16:36 up and it went from so much to 16:39 basically nothing, right, 16:40 comparatively, so... 16:43 So, Charlee, God really did 16:46 perform beautiful miracles for 16:49 your mom and for your dad. 16:50 So did this change your 16:53 attitude towards God? 16:55 >> You would think that 16:56 it would. 16:57 When my mom was healed, 16:59 obviously, yes, I was at a 17:00 place where I was preaching to 17:02 the trees, writing sermons, 17:03 preaching to dolls, whatever. 17:05 I never wanted to be a pastor, 17:07 but I enjoyed the Bible. 17:11 By the time I reached my 17:12 teenage years and my dad, 17:14 he went through his surgery, 17:16 I was angry with God. 17:19 Despite all of it, I was angry 17:20 with God, I wanted nothing to 17:22 do with Him for a good portion 17:24 as well. 17:25 And I went away to high school 17:28 and it was through meeting a 17:30 friend, actually, that was 17:32 very devout, very-- God was 17:35 everything to her, that I 17:37 slowly started to 17:39 come back to Him. 17:42 >> So where did the ministry 17:44 come in for you? 17:46 'Cause you eventually became 17:48 a minister. 17:48 >> Yes, it was not something I 17:51 wanted to get into, but when I 17:54 was nineteen years old, I had 17:57 heard a sermon preached by a 17:59 pastor, Pastor David 18:00 Asscherick from the institute 18:02 known as ARISE and he was 18:04 talking about door-to-door 18:05 ministry, so going 18:06 door-to-door, praying with 18:07 people, offering Bible studies 18:09 and I decided that that was 18:10 something that maybe I could 18:11 do, I mean, I didn't 18:13 necessarily wanna talk to 18:14 people, but I wanted to do 18:16 something. 18:17 And so myself and a number of 18:20 the youth from the church, we 18:21 decided that we would do this 18:23 one summer so we would go 18:24 door-to-door on Sabbath 18:26 afternoons. 18:27 And so it started with those 18:28 little things and then when I 18:31 went away to university, I had 18:35 originally signed up to take 18:36 chemistry and just something 18:40 didn't feel right. 18:41 And I hate to attribute 18:42 something to a feeling, but it 18:43 just-- something wasn't 18:44 sitting well. 18:45 And so one Friday night 18:46 I spent a lot of time just 18:48 praying and saying, "OK, God," 18:49 "I'm ready to surrender to" 18:50 "whatever You have." 18:52 "What should I do?" 18:53 "Where do You want" 18:54 "my life to go?" 18:55 And the answer kept coming 18:57 back, "You need to take" 18:58 "religious studies, you need" 18:59 "to take religious studies." 19:01 And I was arguing with God, 19:02 "I do not want to be a" 19:04 pastor, I do not wanna" 19:05 "do that." 19:06 And so I switched my major and 19:10 I absolutely loved what I was 19:12 studying, I loved what I was 19:13 learning, the problem was, 19:15 though, that at the time I was 19:16 working around 40 hours at 19:19 Subway down the road to pay 19:21 for school and I was trying to 19:23 go to school full time. 19:24 So by the end of the year, 19:26 I said to God, "If this is" 19:27 "something that I'm to" 19:29 "continue doing, I need a" 19:30 "different job." 19:31 "I need a job where I can" 19:32 "perhaps study as well." 19:34 And so that's when I really 19:36 met Dean Shannon as we called 19:38 her, out at the university. 19:41 She approached me one day and 19:42 she said, "Charlee, I have a" 19:43 "job working desk that," 19:45 "you know, I would love to" 19:46 "give to you if you'd be" 19:48 "willing to take it for next" 19:49 "school year." 19:51 It wasn't until a couple years 19:52 later that I found out that 19:53 she admitted, she said, 19:55 "I never did that." 19:56 "I never just offered people" 19:57 "those jobs." 19:58 "They had to apply." 20:00 She's like, "Something just" 20:01 "spoke to me." 20:02 And she actually, she passed 20:03 away last year, a wonderful 20:06 woman and very powerful in her 20:08 prayer life as well. 20:10 And so it was just interesting 20:11 to see how God was using these 20:13 different people to begin to 20:14 point me in the direction that 20:15 He wanted me to go. 20:17 >> So you really didn't wanna 20:18 go into the ministry. 20:19 [Charlee] No. 20:19 >> God provided a door and 20:21 opened that door for you. 20:23 >> Yes, yes. 20:24 >> So tell us, how did you 20:26 meet your husband, Eric? 20:28 >> Alright. 20:29 So it was actually through the 20:30 exact same lady. 20:32 It was my third year of 20:33 university and she called me 20:34 into her office and she said, 20:36 "I have a nephew" 20:38 "that I really think that you" 20:39 "should meet," and I said, 20:42 "I'm not interested," 20:43 "but thank you so much." 20:45 So about a week went by and 20:46 she called me back in and she 20:48 said, "You know, I have a" 20:50 "nephew and I really think" 20:52 "that you should meet him." 20:53 And again, I said, "I'm not" 20:55 "interested, but thank you." 20:56 And she said, "Let me show" 20:57 "you some pictures," and 20:58 so she showed me some pictures 20:59 and I said, 21:00 "Thank you, but I'm gonna go." 21:03 And so again, she called me 21:05 back, it was about a week 21:07 later and she said, "I have" 21:08 "a nephew, why don't you just" 21:09 "add him on Facebook." 21:11 Facebook was fairly new. 21:13 And so I did and we began to 21:15 talk and I noticed that there 21:16 was something very different 21:17 about him, he was very-- 21:19 His outlook on God, 21:22 his outlook on life was very 21:23 positive and very refreshing. 21:25 And so, I mean, what can I 21:26 say, one thing led to another 21:28 and we met and, you know, 21:30 here we are. 21:32 [Mike] So you got married, you 21:34 had children then ministry was 21:36 completely off the table now. 21:37 [Charlee] I figured so, yes. 21:39 I had worked at a nursing home 21:40 for a couple years after we 21:42 first got married, but now 21:44 we'd moved to Ontario, I'd had 21:46 my first child and I had 21:47 basically told God, 21:48 "OK, I get it." 21:49 "You just wanted me to do" 21:50 "that and now I'm done." 21:51 "I can 'retire, '" so to speak. 21:53 "I'll do something different." 21:54 And then I began receiving 21:56 phone calls asking me if I 21:57 would preach at different 21:58 churches on Sabbath and so 22:00 every Sabbath we would visit a 22:01 different church and 22:02 I would speak. 22:04 And again, during that time I 22:06 was praying and saying, 22:07 "OK, God, what more do" 22:08 "You want me to do?" 22:09 "What more can I do?" 22:10 Again, thinking outside of the 22:12 ministry spectrum. 22:14 And so I started the 22:17 greenhouse that my parents now 22:19 own and operate as a means to 22:22 do two things, number one: 22:24 reach the community because 22:27 it's been a great testament 22:28 to, you know, the Sabbath and 22:30 has opened up a lot of doors 22:31 for talking with people about 22:33 prayer and about God. 22:35 >> So just-- you're open 22:36 there, when you opened it up 22:38 you said you're gonna open six 22:40 days a week, but on Saturday, 22:41 which tends to be, for a 22:43 greenhouse, a very busy day, 22:44 the busiest day and you're 22:46 saying, we're not gonna open. 22:48 And you guys kept it going. 22:49 >> We did, yeah. 22:50 >> Wow. 22:51 >> It was certainly difficult 22:52 that first Sabbath watching 22:55 cars come in and then Sunday 22:56 came and absolutely nobody 22:57 was there. 22:58 And so, you know, watching 23:00 just the way that God provided 23:01 enough just to keep it going 23:03 year after year was really 23:05 neat to see. 23:07 >> So now you're in this 23:09 greenhouse ministry, you're 23:10 doing-- you're running a 23:11 greenhouse now and so you're 23:13 thinking, "OK, that's it." 23:15 "No ministry, that door's" 23:17 "closed," but... 23:20 >> But I received a call 23:22 from the pastor in Belleville 23:24 at the time asking if I would 23:25 work as a Bible worker 23:27 for them. 23:28 And so it was a one-year 23:29 contract and I did that and at 23:32 the end of the year, I 23:33 remember leaving, it was 23:34 February and by this time I'd 23:37 had my second child and I 23:39 said, you know, "OK," again, 23:41 "God, I don't know what the" 23:42 "next step is for my life," 23:44 "but I leave it in Your hands" 23:46 "entirely." 23:48 And a month later I was called 23:50 by the Ontario Conference and 23:51 asked if I would pastor the 23:54 church at Kendalwood in Whitby 23:57 and so I went there for a year 23:58 and a half and now here 24:01 I'm at Kingsway. 24:02 So it's been really cool to 24:03 see how God has led and worked 24:05 in all these different areas 24:07 to bring me to this point. 24:09 >> Wow! 24:09 And so you're really active 24:11 in ministry. 24:12 How does that affect 24:13 your family? 24:14 How does it affect Eric? 24:16 >> Honestly, I couldn't do 24:17 anything without Eric. 24:19 The girls-- 24:20 [Mike] So he's a 24:21 heavy-duty mechanic. 24:22 [Charlee] He is a heavy-duty 24:23 mechanic, yes. 24:24 [Mike] Is he an up-front person 24:25 with you, he's preaching 24:26 with you? 24:27 >> Oh, absolutely not, no. 24:27 [all laugh] 24:28 >> No, Eric is the type of 24:29 guy that, he says that he 24:31 likes to serve God from 24:32 behind the scenes. 24:33 So he prefers to-- he'll fix 24:35 someone's car or he will watch 24:38 the kids, but that's-- he's 24:40 content and he's happy doing 24:42 that which, he, like I said, 24:44 I couldn't do anything, 24:45 especially working at 24:47 Kingsway, it's a very busy 24:48 environment and so knowing 24:51 that he's there and he's very 24:52 active in the sense that he's 24:54 supportive in whatever way 24:55 he can be. 24:58 >> You know, the greatest 24:59 miracle of all is to see your 25:02 life and the way God worked in 25:04 your life to see a life that 25:06 is changed, you know, by the 25:08 work of Jesus and...beautiful. 25:10 Thank you very much for 25:11 sharing that with us. 25:13 And I wonder, as we close off, 25:14 if you could close with a word 25:16 of prayer for us? 25:17 >> Absolutely. 25:20 Father in heaven, I just wanna 25:22 thank You for this time that 25:23 we were able to take to 25:25 reflect back over the years 25:27 and, Lord, just to see, number 25:28 one, the influence that prayer 25:32 has on our lives, the way that 25:34 it can heal, the way that You 25:36 can work through it to 25:37 reach people. 25:38 And, Lord, I just thank You 25:40 also for the way that You lead 25:41 and guide in each and every 25:42 one of our lives, to bring us 25:44 to the place where You can 25:46 work through us. 25:48 And so, Lord, I just wanna 25:49 pray that You would continue 25:50 to be with Mike and René as 25:54 they continue to lead in this 25:55 ministry and just be with all 25:58 of the viewers, Lord, that are 26:00 watching, Lord, work and lead 26:01 and guide in their lives, 26:02 in a mighty and powerful way, 26:04 make Yourself known. 26:05 I pray and I ask this in Your 26:06 name, amen. 26:07 >> Amen. 26:08 Thank you very much, Charlee. 26:10 Thank you for sharing. 26:11 Your story was
