00:43 >> Welcome to It Is 00:44 Written Canada. 00:45 Thank you for joining us here 00:47 at Little Gem, Alberta at the 00:49 Sankey Ranch where we are 00:50 visiting with Murray and 00:52 Elaine Sankey again. 00:55 Last week they shared with us 00:56 about both of their 00:58 stories started with their 00:59 grandparents who came from the 01:00 Ukraine to Canada, 01:03 homesteaded, and farmed 01:05 the land. 01:06 >> And last week, we ended 01:08 their story with Murray and 01:10 Elaine meeting at a Christian 01:12 boarding school, falling in 01:13 love and getting married at a 01:14 young age, and I stopped 01:16 Elaine when she told us that 01:19 reality set in for her when 01:21 she was married to Murray, a 01:23 rancher, and all she saw was a 01:26 dry, barren landscape with not 01:28 another light on the horizon 01:30 and she wondered to herself, 01:33 "What have I done?" 01:35 "Am I the only one on" 01:37 "this planet?" 01:39 Murray and Elaine, welcome to 01:40 It Is Written Canada. 01:42 >> Good to be here. 01:44 >> Welcome to Little Gem. 01:45 >> Elaine, now you had this 01:47 new reality, you were married 01:49 to a rancher who, of course, 01:51 you loved, but you're looking 01:53 out on a barren landscape 01:54 every day. 01:56 How did you deal with that? 01:57 >> Well, I believe my life 01:59 growing up on the prairies of 02:00 Manitoba prepared me for it a 02:03 bit, I grew up as almost an 02:04 only child, being quite a bit 02:06 younger than my two older 02:07 siblings, so I didn't mind 02:10 being by myself, I was used to 02:12 life that way. 02:13 [MIKE] That would prepare you. 02:14 >> It did. 02:16 And then coming out here, of 02:17 course, being an adjustment 02:18 still because it was a half 02:21 hour from town instead of just 02:22 a few minutes where I grew up. 02:24 But we took the time because 02:27 we were very young when we got 02:29 married, we took the time to 02:30 mature a bit before we decided 02:32 to have children. 02:34 And by the time we did that, 02:35 about five years later, there 02:37 were other young families in 02:39 our church and so that was 02:40 much more enjoyable. 02:43 >> So, Murray and Elaine, can 02:45 you tell us about any trials 02:47 that you have had to face? 02:50 >> Well, the way I look at it, 02:52 everybody has trials, like I 02:54 said earlier, every one of us 02:56 have a story. 02:58 So what is a trial, 02:59 what is a challenge? 03:00 And kind of the way I look at 03:03 it now is that every challenge 03:06 we have prepares us for the 03:09 next one. 03:11 I don't see anywhere in God's 03:12 Word where He promises us a 03:14 smooth journey if we 03:16 follow Him. 03:17 There's gonna be bumps in the 03:19 road, sometimes big bumps, and 03:21 so we, like many others, have 03:23 experienced these bumps, but 03:25 like a wise old family friend 03:26 told us one time, 03:29 if the bumps don't kill you, 03:31 they'll make you stronger. 03:33 Of course that's a familiar 03:34 thing for many of us, 03:37 that saying. 03:38 So, you know, I have never 03:40 broken a bone in my body, 03:42 but I have struggled with 03:43 auto-immune situations where 03:45 at two years of age I had 03:47 polio, in the '53 outbreak 03:49 I had polio, and was, I think, 03:53 miraculously healed because 03:55 of the prayers of my family 03:56 and friends and neighbours, 03:57 church members, didn't last 04:00 very long. 04:01 I think it was within three 04:03 years or so, my mother 04:04 couldn't catch me around the 04:05 yard, she was saying, 04:06 "If I ever catch you, you're" 04:07 "really gonna get a whippin'!" 04:08 And here was a boy running 04:10 away that couldn't walk 04:12 at one time. 04:14 [ELAINE] One of the bigger 04:16 challenges that our family's 04:18 faced was when our son was 04:21 almost 14 he had a motorbike 04:23 accident that resulted in a 04:26 spinal cord injury and he... 04:31 nearly died, he was very 04:34 traumatically injured. 04:35 When I found him, Murray had 04:37 asked-- phoned me and said, 04:39 "He's not appearing at the" 04:40 "field where he's supposed" 04:41 "to be, why don't you go" 04:42 "see-- maybe he's lying along" 04:44 "the road somewhere." 04:45 Well, yes, he was and it was 04:49 in the days before cell phones 04:51 so I didn't have a cell phone, 04:53 all I could do was pray beside 04:55 him, cover him with a blanket, 04:58 and go home, it was about two 04:59 miles from home that the 05:01 accident happened. 05:02 And the phones hadn't been 05:04 working, they'd been very 05:05 sporadic that weekend, 05:07 this was a Sunday afternoon, 05:08 er, morning and miraculously 05:11 the phone worked. 05:12 I phoned for the ambulance, I 05:14 phoned a neighbour to go and 05:16 tell Murray and bring him home 05:18 and so that was the first 05:20 miracle that happened is the 05:22 phones worked. 05:23 >> So later that day all ended 05:25 up in Calgary, Elaine and I 05:27 and Scott, and I'm trying to 05:29 call the folks back home as to 05:31 what's going on and it wasn't 05:32 until ten o'clock that night 05:34 that we actually go through 05:37 to the folks on the farm. 05:38 So the phones were out the 05:40 whole day, so... 05:42 [MIKE] So it was out before 05:43 you called... 05:44 [MURRAY] Yes. 05:45 [ELAINE] And after. 05:46 >> And after, so just that 05:48 little window of opportunity. 05:49 >> That's right. 05:50 [MIKE] The lines were 05:51 connected, but they were 05:53 disconnected the whole 05:53 other time. 05:55 [MURRAY] Can you explain that? 05:55 >> No. 05:56 [MURRAY] No, that is what I 05:59 call a miracle, something you 06:00 can't easily explain away. 06:02 And so there were three 06:05 miracles that day. 06:07 When she found him, he had hit 06:09 a fence post with his head and 06:11 he was lying-- livestock, 06:13 cattle usually walk along the 06:14 fence and they make a path, 06:16 OK, and it's an indentation 06:18 and he was lying with his 06:20 helmet on, which helped, with 06:22 his mouth and nose over that 06:24 cow path. 06:26 He had vomited and he was 06:27 unconscious, but he was 06:29 not choking. 06:30 [ELAINE] Yeah, not aspirated 06:32 because of his helmet holding 06:34 him up over this indentation. 06:36 >> So that was the 06:38 second miracle. 06:40 Third miracle? 06:41 >> Go ahead. 06:41 >> OK. 06:42 Him and I that morning had 06:44 had a big breakfast because we 06:45 were gonna move cattle that 06:46 day and I had taken him over 06:48 to the neighbours to get his 06:50 bike he left there the night 06:51 before and so he'd had a 06:53 big breakfast. 06:55 We did not realize when we 06:58 took him by ground ambulance 07:00 to Hanna, which was an hour 07:02 away, and he waited probably 07:03 for an hour before the 07:05 ambulance arrived, they got to 07:07 Hanna, they had called STARS 07:09 in already and they started 07:12 pumping his stomach and they 07:14 lost his blood pressure when 07:17 they did that and we were 07:19 wondering, "Why aren't they" 07:20 "leaving, why aren't they" 07:21 "going to Calgary?" 07:22 STARS had brought blood with 07:23 them, which they always do, 07:25 and finally they came out and 07:27 they said, "We cannot get his" 07:28 "blood pressure back," 07:29 "we're running out of blood," 07:31 "we're taking off." 07:32 "There's a slight chance" 07:35 "that he may not make it." 07:37 >> What had happened is he had 07:38 ruptured his spleen and the 07:40 full stomach had kept the 07:42 pressure on the spleen so he 07:44 hadn't bled out until they 07:45 pumped his stomach. 07:46 [MURRAY] Until they pumped his 07:47 stomach, so that in itself, 07:49 to me, was a miracle, 07:50 his full stomach, the fact 07:52 that he-- it was right after 07:54 breakfast and so of course he 07:57 made it, but they did not know 07:59 the spleen was ruptured until 08:01 they-- ten minutes after they 08:02 got to Calgary they had him 08:04 opened up and found 08:05 the problem. 08:06 [ELAINE] By the time we 08:07 arrived, our friends had 08:09 driven us, you know, and we're 08:11 talking about what has 08:13 happened and we're saying, 08:15 "Lord, we don't know how to" 08:17 "pray," you know, "we don't" 08:18 "know what to pray for," 08:20 you know, what would be best 08:21 for him? 08:22 To pass away or to remain 08:25 alive and disabled? 08:27 You know, that was the hardest 08:29 thing for us, just pray God's 08:31 will, you know, not know when 08:33 we got to Calgary if he was 08:35 going to be alive. 08:36 >> I'd like to say, too, that, 08:38 before we leave this, this 08:39 subject of Scott in Calgary, 08:41 he was in ICU for what, two 08:43 weeks in ICU, but not long 08:46 after he became conscious, 08:49 we shared with him that, you 08:52 know, Henry Feyerabend, 08:54 if you know anything about 08:55 It Is Written, you know that 08:56 Henry Feyerabend was the 08:58 founder of It Is Written. 09:01 Henry Feyerabend phoned us 09:02 this morning and said, 09:03 "The whole team is praying" 09:05 "for you, Scott." 09:06 That just was like the lights 09:08 came on for him. 09:10 We had no idea that it meant-- 09:12 that it was so meaningful to 09:14 him, it was just like-- and 09:16 that gave us great courage 09:18 that, you know, there is some 09:20 life in this guy, you know? 09:22 >> Talking about lights coming 09:24 on, when-- the first day that 09:27 Scott was in ICU, I had asked 09:29 for a Bible and somebody 09:31 brought me a Bible and I don't 09:34 often test God this way, but I 09:35 said, you know, "I need" 09:37 "something from You, Lord," 09:38 so I just let it fall open 09:40 and in Matthew, I forget 09:43 exactly the place where it 09:45 was found, but it says, 09:46 "If the eye is good," 09:48 "the whole body will be full" 09:49 "of light." 09:51 And, I mean, we knew he could 09:53 see and to me it was like, 09:56 he's going to be OK, no matter 09:58 what happens, he's going to be 10:00 OK, his body-- the Lord will 10:02 look after him. 10:04 >> Yeah, so he suffered a 10:06 compression fracture, at the 10:07 T4 level and as well, his left 10:11 arm was taken out of use 10:13 because when his head hit the 10:14 fence post, it glanced off and 10:16 tore his shoulder away from 10:18 his spine and so his... 10:20 [ELAINE] Nerves. 10:21 >> The nerves, yes, and so his 10:23 left arm was just there. 10:24 So here's a one-handed-- his 10:26 right arm was good and strong, 10:28 here's a one-handed bandit 10:29 that's going through life with 10:31 no legs and... 10:32 >> We just thank God that he 10:35 was not brain-injured. 10:38 The Lord has been so good and 10:40 blessed him so much even 10:41 though he lives in chronic 10:42 pain, he's been blessed with a 10:44 good mind, he's gotten a good 10:46 education, he's worked for 10:48 years in the oil and gas 10:49 industry as a financial 10:51 analyst, he's travelled the 10:52 world and worked throughout 10:54 the world and, you know, so 10:57 the promise of the Lord that 10:59 he was gonna be OK no matter 11:00 what happened and certainly 11:02 been played out in his life 11:04 so far. 11:05 >> Yeah and we can keep 11:06 reminding him, and we do, 11:09 that God has a purpose for 11:10 him, his life was preserved for 11:14 a reason and some day, he's 11:16 come close to death several 11:18 times since with his health 11:19 issues related to his injury 11:22 and he comes through, you 11:25 know, and it's just, um... 11:29 >> Well, throughout life, 11:31 you know, through all the 11:33 challenges that we've faced, 11:35 and not just Scott's, but 11:37 we've chosen to focus on the 11:39 positive, not what has been 11:41 lost, but what is still there 11:44 and maybe what has been gained 11:45 because throughout-- I think 11:47 we've become stronger as a 11:49 family because of this, his 11:52 friends, his-- our community 11:55 rallied so much behind us, our 11:57 church, like we told you, it 11:59 was a small church and yet 12:02 every Sabbath that Scott was 12:03 in Calgary in the hospital 12:05 initially, one family, they 12:07 took turns, would travel to 12:10 Calgary with a Sabbath dinner 12:12 prepared to visit us, feed us, 12:15 encourage us and that 12:17 meant so much. 12:18 [MURRAY] Through all this, 12:20 our family, of course, was 12:21 greatly impacted. 12:23 It probably affected my dad 12:25 the worst because Scott, our 12:28 son, was his special little 12:30 heir to the kingdom, he was 12:32 the only grandson and Dad was 12:35 already training him to run 12:36 equipment and that, but in all 12:38 of this, we kept asking 12:39 ourselves, what is there in 12:41 this to learn? 12:42 And so over the years, we have 12:43 discovered some of the things 12:45 that we-- that have benefited 12:46 us and one of them has been 12:50 the impact that the generosity 12:52 of our friends and neighbours 12:53 had with us. 12:55 There were total strangers 12:56 that called us that-- from 12:58 Texas, "Oh, we heard about" 13:01 "you this morning so you're" 13:02 "in our prayer group," and we 13:03 had no idea who they were, 13:04 it just-- 13:06 [ELAINE] People of all faiths. 13:07 [MURRAY] Of all faiths, yes. 13:08 And so that got us into the 13:13 mindset of just being more 13:16 caring and more helpful. 13:18 >> Kind of really educated us 13:20 and opened our eyes, not only 13:22 ours, but, you know, the whole 13:23 community learned through it 13:25 and I believe we've all been 13:26 better because of it. 13:29 >> About seven months after 13:30 all the rehab, the hospital 13:32 visits, you were now able to 13:35 take Scott home and God spoke 13:39 to you at that moment. 13:41 You wanna tell us about that? 13:43 [ELAINE] Well, yes. 13:46 It was time to bring Scott 13:48 home permanently. 13:49 We'd had weekend leaves where 13:50 we had trial runs and brought 13:52 him home, but... 13:54 So we had bought a van that 13:56 was going to be adapted for 13:59 the disability for a 14:01 wheelchair and at that time in 14:03 19-- it was spring of '93, 14:07 it was a new thing, CD's were 14:09 a new thing and it had a 14:11 CD player and we didn't own 14:13 any CD's and we were going to 14:15 be driving home on a Friday 14:16 evening, Sabbath would be 14:18 coming and I wanted some 14:20 spiritual music, I like music 14:22 to bring in the Sabbath. 14:23 And every day as I had 14:25 travelled from Ronald McDonald 14:26 House to the hospital, I had 14:28 passed a Christian book store 14:30 so I thought, "Well, I'm" 14:31 "gonna pull in here and see" 14:32 "what I can find for a CD." 14:34 And I looked at the rack and I 14:35 didn't know any of the people 14:37 there, you know, of the 14:39 singers and I thought, "Well," 14:41 "I'll just buy one that has" 14:43 "a variety of songs," 14:44 "a variety of artists," 14:45 "and that way maybe there's" 14:47 "something that will" 14:48 "speak to me." 14:50 And wow, did the Lord ever 14:53 speak to me. 14:54 We're travelling home and my 14:56 family wasn't impacted by this 14:58 song like I was, but there was 15:00 a fellow by the name of Don 15:02 Moen who sang the song... 15:22 You know, what promise that I 15:25 had to go to over and over 15:26 again in, you know, we'd 15:29 replay this song. 15:30 [MIKE] Especially at 15:31 that time... 15:32 [ELAINE] Exactly! 15:33 >> God was speaking directly 15:34 into your situation. 15:35 [ELAINE] To me, He knew as a 15:36 mom, I would probably bear 15:38 most of the burden of the 15:39 care-giving, you know, and I 15:41 needed some encouragement. 15:43 And so then he goes on to 15:45 speak in this song and I'll 15:47 just read it 'cause I can't 15:48 remember all the words, 15:49 but he says... 16:11 What a promise. 16:12 >> What a promise. 16:14 So God was promising you 16:15 directly through that song... 16:17 [ELAINE] Yes, I believe 16:18 He was. 16:19 >> And you needed that and you 16:20 stopped and got it. 16:21 >> Yeah. 16:23 >> So tragedies happened and-- 16:26 big tragedy with what happened 16:28 to Scott, do you think you 16:31 would be different if that 16:32 didn't happen to you? 16:34 How did it change you? 16:36 >> Absolutely it changed us. 16:39 I mean, every test, every 16:42 stretch makes you stronger and 16:45 it drew us together, it drew 16:47 us closer to God. 16:50 I believe it also strengthened 16:51 Scott's faith. 16:53 He, you know, had grown up as 16:54 a child learning to love the 16:57 Lord and he always has, but in 17:00 reading through the book, 17:01 The Great Controversy, while he 17:02 was in the hospital, it just 17:05 reinforced to him how we have 17:08 this great promise that when 17:10 the Lord comes again, He's 17:12 going to heal our bodies and 17:14 make us whole and Scott's 17:16 disability at that time will 17:18 be gone and that brings us 17:21 great comfort. 17:22 >> There is somebody really in 17:25 charge, I think that's what 17:27 every young person wants to 17:28 know, who's in charge of this 17:30 mess that we're inheriting? 17:32 And Scott discovered by 17:34 reading that book that there 17:35 is somebody in charge 17:37 and that's God Himself. 17:38 There is a plan. 17:42 >> Murray and Elaine, you've 17:43 been telling us about how 17:45 Scott was growing spiritually. 17:47 Can you share with us your 17:48 personal spiritual journey as 17:50 a couple? 17:52 >> Well, certainly as we were 17:53 growing up, you know, we grew 17:55 up in small churches where we 17:58 were always involved and we 18:02 had been baptized, each of us, 18:04 at a young age and-- but that 18:07 was just the beginning, 18:08 you know, we still had much 18:09 maturing and growth to do in 18:10 our spiritual journey. 18:12 And so while we were 18:14 at college, 18:16 there was a Week of Prayer 18:18 speaker called Mike Stevenson 18:19 who came and spoke and 18:21 somehow he just really 18:22 touched both of us. 18:24 We both knew that someone we 18:28 wanted in a spouse had to have 18:30 a spiritual relationship with 18:31 God and we found we were on 18:34 the same page, we were so 18:36 touched by the way Mike 18:38 portrayed the love of God to 18:40 us, that we wanted to love Him 18:42 back that way. 18:43 And so, you know, we 18:45 recommitted ourselves at 18:46 that time to the Lord. 18:48 >> And shortly after we got 18:50 married, a good friend of ours 18:53 shared some tapes, if anybody 18:55 knows what tapes are 18:56 anymore... 18:57 >> Cassette tapes. 18:58 >> ...cassette tapes with us 19:00 on thoughts of knowing Jesus 19:03 as a personal friend versus, 19:08 you know, just someone you 19:09 have to try and please and 19:13 they were given by a man 19:15 called Morris Venden who's 19:17 written many books and it 19:19 spoke to us, it was-- it's 19:21 called A Message of 19:22 Righteousness by Faith and 19:25 that gave us kind of a good 19:28 start, but it was our friend 19:30 that shared that with us and 19:33 he's now retired, he was a-- 19:35 he went on to become a pastor 19:37 and he's now retired. 19:39 >> And there again, just, you 19:40 know, a word at the right 19:42 time to the right people, how 19:44 it can influence and affect 19:47 the future, you know, 19:49 it's just something that we 19:51 have to remember to do more. 19:53 [MIKE] Murray, I know your 19:54 father played a big part in 19:56 your life and he gave you a 19:58 lot of wisdom, a lot of 20:00 counsel, and there's a lot of 20:02 stories that you had that 20:05 really rubbed off on you and 20:07 taught you many life lessons. 20:08 Tell us the story about the 20:10 jelly bean jar. 20:12 >> (chuckles) Well, the same 20:15 store in Little Gem that my 20:18 father and mother bought in 20:20 1950, he used to come into 20:23 with his dad as a child. 20:26 Back in the depression years, 20:27 in the '30's, dad would talk 20:29 about eating a whole granary 20:30 full of wheat and what he 20:31 meant was that when they 20:33 needed some groceries, his Dad 20:35 would load up a wagon load of 20:36 wheat, bring it to Little Gem, 20:39 sell it at the elevator, 20:40 go over to the store and 20:42 purchase the groceries. 20:44 My dad always looked forward 20:45 to it because his dad would 20:47 give him a nickel for his 20:49 favourite candy, jelly beans. 20:51 So he'd hold up his nickel to 20:53 the store lady, her name was 20:55 Mrs. McCray, and Mrs. McCray 20:57 would look down at him and she 20:59 would reach into this jar 21:02 which I found after my dad 21:05 passed away in his house, 21:07 this is the jar of the Little 21:08 Gem store of jelly beans. 21:11 Now, these aren't the original 21:12 jelly beans, (chuckles) 21:14 but I keep this now on my 21:16 office desk in my shop to 21:18 remind me of a lesson that my 21:19 dad told me he learned. 21:21 As Mrs. McCray reached in her 21:24 jar of jelly beans and counted 21:27 out for that nickel, we'll 21:28 assume she counted out five 21:31 jelly beans, OK, that's what 21:33 his nickel would buy him, then 21:35 she'd stop and she'd look down 21:37 at him and smile and she'd-- 21:40 and for some reason he kept 21:42 his hand there and she'd give 21:43 him another couple of jelly 21:45 beans and he said that 21:48 happened every time. 21:50 He said he learned from that 21:52 lady how to be generous. 21:55 And I often wondered after 21:56 that time when my dad would 21:58 sell seed, wheat and seed oats 22:02 on the farm, and the neighbour 22:04 or whoever it was would be 22:05 loading up the seed oats and 22:07 Dad would go to shut the auger 22:09 off when it was enough and he 22:10 kind of would have trouble 22:11 finding the stop switch, you 22:13 know, and I'm thinking, "Dad!" 22:14 you know, but it goes back to 22:16 that extra jelly bean. 22:18 I learned that story from Dad, 22:20 he learned that lesson and I 22:21 have resolved to be the same 22:23 way and this reminds me every 22:24 day when I look at my 22:25 jelly beans. 22:28 ♪Faith of our
