you to last week. 00:59 >> Amber found herself broken 01:01 and living on the cold city 01:03 streets after facing one 01:05 traumatic experience after 01:07 another, yet she knew that God 01:11 was always with her. 01:13 Amber, thank you for joining 01:15 us again this week on 01:16 It Is Written Canada. 01:18 >> It's my pleasure. 01:20 >> Amber, last week you talked 01:21 to us about how you ended up 01:23 on the streets. 01:24 What was it like? 01:26 >> It was rough, there was a 01:28 lot of bad times, there was a 01:30 lot of scary times, but the 01:33 most interesting part is that 01:35 God walked with me. 01:37 That day that I prayed for Him 01:40 to get me out of there, He was 01:42 able to help me get my dogs to 01:45 a safe place and He put a lot 01:48 of people in my path make her a shoe out 02:14 of what we had. 02:15 So I had some boots on so I 02:17 took the inside insulation 02:19 part out of my boot and he 02:20 took the sole out of his shoe 02:22 and we duct taped her a shoe 02:23 together and she could barely 02:25 stand and the guy looked at me 02:29 and he said, "Do you know" 02:30 "that this is what Jesus" 02:31 "used to do?" 02:32 And it just blew me away, you 02:34 know, He just used to walk 02:36 around helping people and 02:38 sharing stories and sharing 02:40 about God and it really 02:42 moved me. 02:43 It also made me think about my 02:45 allowed in, I 03:19 was fighting very hard to get 03:20 my stuff out of there. 03:22 I wasn't legally allowed to go 03:23 there, they had to correct the 03:25 paperwork saying that I could 03:27 go there if I had an officer 03:29 and then we had tried many 03:30 times when there was nobody 03:32 home or nobody would answer 03:34 and then finally one day I did 03:36 get some stuff and I brought 03:38 it over to my boss, Lily's, 03:39 house and I had it in the 03:42 driveway there and I was so 03:43 relieved that I had finally 03:45 gotten my stuff and her son 03:47 came out of the house and 03:49 he said, "Get this junk" 03:51 "out of my driveway!" 03:52 And I was very offended 'cause 03:54 this was everything I owned, 03:57 but it hit me right then, you 03:58 know, I just started looking 04:00 at everything and I had fought 04:02 so hard for this stuff and I 04:03 didn't have anywhere to keep 04:05 it and I just wanted to be 04:09 free of it and so I just 04:11 started down and I 04:20 prayed, "Where is this" 04:21 "stuff supposed to go?" 04:23 "Get it to the right person." 04:24 My neighbour came across the 04:26 street, asked if we were 04:27 having a garage sale, I said, 04:29 "Well, we are, but" 04:30 "everything's free." 04:31 I didn't want any money for 04:33 it, it was not what that was 04:35 about for me so he took a 04:37 really beautiful table and the 04:39 neighbours down the street 04:40 took my leather furniture and 04:43 he said that he had a friend 04:45 that worked in the women's 04:46 shelter and they were in need 04:47 of furniture and I said, 04:49 "Well, call her up!" 04:50 And so he was able to take a 04:52 bunch of stuff and get it to 04:54 some ladies that were just 04:55 starting out, so... 04:57 >> So, Amber, you were getting 04:58 rid of all your things then 04:59 you found there was something 05:01 you didn't want to get rid of. 05:02 >> You're right, yeah. 05:03 I had kept a couple special 05:05 items, my photo albums 06:06 these things... 06:08 >> Yeah, my mom said I would 06:09 call about every three weeks 06:11 and I wasn't calling them 06:13 miracles, but I knew some 06:14 strange things were happening 06:16 to me and they were wonderful 06:18 things, things that were 06:19 helping me grow and change 06:22 and I was being shown Jesus 06:24 on my walk. 06:27 I do remember being very cold 06:29 when I first hit the street, 06:30 I didn't have my clothes or 06:32 anything so I do remember 06:35 needing a jacket and the 06:37 shelter had some jackets that 06:39 were available and I remember 06:40 trying on this beautiful 06:42 jacket, it looked like it was 06:43 brand new, it was Calvin 06:44 Klein, it was long, it was 06:45 navy blue and I put it on and 06:49 it fit me perfectly and I knew 06:51 I was blessed. 06:54 I also remember being hungry 06:55 one day and I remember being 06:59 invited over for dinner and-- 07:02 by Mary and Bill, and I really 07:05 thought it was a pity invite 07:07 and I thought, 07:09 you know, I don't want to 07:10 interfere with their time 07:12 together and their friends 07:13 and stuff and then I also had 07:16 a young man and woman in front 07:19 of me while I was walking and 07:21 they turned around and out of 07:23 the blue asked me if I wanted 07:24 this bottle of water and this 07:26 granola bar and, you know, it 07:29 wasn't a dirty, opened bottle, 07:31 and it was perfect condition 07:34 and I said, "No," 07:35 "thank you," you know, 07:36 "I don't take anything from" 07:38 "strangers," and I laughed 07:40 about it afterwards 'cause I'm 07:41 like, "Here's God trying" 07:43 "so hard to feed me and I'm" 07:44 "so mad at Him cause I'm" 07:46 "saying I'm hungry," 07:47 "I'm not asking for gold or" 07:49 "diamonds or anything," 07:50 "I just want food." (laughs) 07:52 So, so many times you're 07:54 asking for things, you think 07:56 it's gonna look a certain way 07:58 and God's been trying to 07:59 provide it to you all along, 08:01 you just can't see it. 08:04 >> So this perspective that 08:06 you had on things started to 08:08 change you, like, even when 08:11 you went dumpster diving. 08:14 It was, you know, you were 08:15 looking at things differently 08:17 than other people. 08:18 >> I was, yeah. 08:20 There were many nights you 08:22 couldn't get into the shelter, 08:24 the shelter filled up very 08:25 quickly, the wet and the dry 08:27 shelters and so we would spend 08:29 our nights dumpster diving and 08:31 I had this really neat group 08:33 of people that I hung out with 08:35 and I remember telling them 08:36 when we first started dumpster 08:38 diving together that, 08:40 "I just want us to" 08:42 "clean up afterwards 'cause," 08:43 I said, "that's why people" 08:45 "get so upset is 'cause, you" 08:47 "know, people leave a mess." 08:48 So they were so gracious, they 08:50 never argued with me or 08:51 anything and they would put 08:53 everything back and I was 08:55 always on people about not 08:57 smoking and try not to swear 08:59 and... (laughs) 09:01 It was very strange, but I had 09:04 smoked for years and I had 09:06 quit smoking and when I was on 09:08 the streets, I said, 09:10 "I don't wanna start again" 09:11 "'cause don't wanna have to" 09:12 "quit again and I already" 09:13 "have one habit." 09:15 >> So, Amber, how did you 09:17 end up working here at 09:18 Spyder Controls? 09:20 >> So, as I had said last 09:22 week, Bill was a family friend 09:24 who had taken me in off the 09:26 streets and graciously gave me 09:28 a camper to stay in. 09:30 He had encouraged me to start 09:32 going back to church, we had 09:34 went to the Ponoka church, 09:36 which is a wonderful church, 09:38 my first time walking in there 09:39 I was very nervous and I 09:41 remember walking through the 09:42 doors and saying, "Wow," 09:44 "I'm so glad I didn't catch" 09:45 "on fire or something." 09:46 (laughs) 09:48 And these two lovely ladies 09:50 came and asked me, they said, 09:52 "If you don't have someone" 09:53 "to sit with, you can come" 09:55 "sit with us," and I was very 09:56 moved by that. 09:57 And so I had started going to 09:59 church again and I also 10:01 started volunteering at the 10:02 soup kitchen again which is 10:03 something that I liked to do 10:05 before I ended up on 10:07 the streets. 10:08 So I was at the soup kitchen 10:09 in Red Deer and I was doing up 10:11 some dishes and I was talking 10:13 to a lady and I said, you 10:16 know, that I had needed work, 10:18 that I was gettin' off the 10:19 streets and I needed a job and 10:20 she says, "Well, I" 10:21 "just happen to own an" 10:23 "auction and need somebody" 10:25 "that could help me out," so I 10:27 started working with her. 10:31 >> I met Amber probably five 10:33 or six years ago and it was at 10:36 church, I believe, that we 10:37 were having potluck and she 10:38 had mentioned that she was 10:40 looking for work and so I said 10:42 to her, "Well, as a" 10:43 "matter of fact we could use" 10:44 "somebody at the auction," 10:46 "we need somebody in" 10:46 "the kitchen." 10:48 And so we hired her, we were 10:49 doing the-- we do meals at the 10:51 auction and yeah, she was 10:54 great, and she was such a 10:56 great help and such a happy 10:57 attitude and, yeah, we really 10:59 enjoyed her. 11:00 And you know what, she became 11:01 a part of our family. 11:03 So life is always a challenge 11:05 and-- but she was a blessing 11:07 to us the whole time she 11:09 helped us and worked for us 11:11 and I'm so happy that the Lord 11:13 restored her and He is 11:15 blessing her because then she 11:17 becomes a channel of blessing 11:19 to other people and, you know, 11:21 every time we walk through 11:22 life, there's never a time in 11:24 our life where the things that 11:26 the Lord has let us go through 11:29 can't always be a blessing to 11:31 someone else. 11:32 All of us have a story and 11:35 every story's different and 11:36 sometimes when we go into a 11:38 challenge and we go into 11:40 something that it seems like 11:41 it's so hard and, Lord, why 11:43 would you ever have me go 11:44 through this? 11:46 It's because down the road we 11:47 need to be a blessing to 11:49 someone else because we've 11:50 walked in their shoes. 11:54 >> So I had been working with 11:56 her for a little bit and she 11:57 just didn't quite have the 11:59 hours I needed for me to 12:01 really get on my feet and she 12:03 ended up introducing me to 12:05 Curtis and Curtis had actually 12:07 been out to my house that I 12:09 was staying in and he had 12:11 volunteered with a group of 12:13 people to do a little bit of 12:15 work on my house because it 12:16 wasn't quite winter-ready, 12:18 there was no furnace and the 12:20 windows were broken out and it 12:22 needed a lot of work so he 12:23 came out with his family and 12:25 volunteered and we had a 12:28 really good meeting and he 12:31 offered me a job and that was 12:32 four and a half years ago now. 12:36 >> So I remember the first 12:37 time that our family was able 12:39 to meet Amber, it was at a 12:40 church work-bee that was 12:42 called to help get Amber's 12:43 house ready for winter. 12:45 We'd been praying for Amber as 12:46 a church family for many 12:48 months, there was a friend of 12:49 ours, Darleen, and she had 12:51 lifted up Amber in prayer many 12:53 times and so we'd prayed for 12:54 her and finally we actually 12:55 got to meet Amber. 12:57 She was trying to make the 12:58 best of the situation and she 12:59 had, you know, really tidied 13:01 the place up as best she 13:02 could, but I mean there was 13:04 walls that weren't insulated, 13:05 there was, you know, a door 13:06 that was just basically 13:07 falling off and we're going 13:09 into winter. 13:09 There was a small wood-burning 13:11 stove in the house and that 13:12 was really all there was 13:13 for heat. 13:13 There was barely any plumbing 13:15 and the plumbing there was 13:16 would freeze in winter and so 13:17 just really seeing that Amber 13:19 was in a tough spot and I can 13:21 remember just something 13:23 standing out in my mind though 13:24 about how caring she was about 13:26 others, you could sense it 13:28 just in the way she interacted 13:29 with those of us that 13:30 were there. 13:31 I can remember then just her 13:33 giving my wife a big hug as we 13:34 left and just really having a 13:35 strong impression that Amber 13:37 was really trying to do 13:38 her best. 13:39 And it was a couple weeks 13:40 after I can remember Linda 13:42 Dunbrack, a friend of hers 13:44 had-- and a church member, 13:46 had been in touch with me and 13:47 just had-- we'd been talking 13:49 about the situation, that 13:51 Amber would be needing work. 13:52 She'd been working for Linda, 13:53 but that work was running out 13:55 and in our business we had an 13:57 opportunity for somebody that 14:00 could do assembly technician 14:02 type jobs and so Amber joined 14:04 our team and it was such a 14:05 blessing right from the start 14:06 when Amber joined. 14:08 She caught on quickly and just 14:09 brought a real fun element to 14:11 our group and really fit 14:13 right in. 14:14 It wasn't easy for Amber, I 14:16 can remember there were times 14:17 where her car would quit on 14:18 the way to work, it was winter 14:20 time, you know, things that 14:22 she had done, really, to turn 14:25 her life around, but yet there 14:26 were these things that were 14:27 going wrong in her life. 14:29 What was so amazing though was 14:31 that it wasn't that that was 14:33 Amber's focus, she was more 14:34 concerned about others. 14:36 There were other people she 14:37 knew of in the community that 14:38 needed, you know, something 14:39 and she would bring that up to 14:41 our staff as we'd have worship 14:42 or as we'd have our outreach 14:44 event and she would bring up 14:45 these needs for others and I 14:47 can remember just thinking-- 14:49 it made such an impression on 14:51 me, thinking, "Here's somebody" 14:53 "who's in such a tough spot," 14:54 "but she's thinking of" 14:56 "others more than she is of" 14:57 "her own needs." 14:58 And I could just see God 14:59 working, you know, just 15:00 different things out 15:01 in her life. 15:02 One of the opportunities that 15:04 I can remember Amber had was 15:05 to go on a mission trip to 15:06 the Philippines. 15:07 It was amazing to see the joy 15:09 that that brought her, 15:10 you could just see it in the 15:12 pictures and when she came 15:13 back she just told these 15:14 stories of working with 15:15 children and she would tell 15:17 others about the opportunities 15:19 to serve and to support the 15:21 needs that were in the 15:22 Philippines, again, just 15:23 thinking of others. 15:24 And then as she continued 15:26 working here, we actually 15:27 started to formalize, we have 15:29 kind of an outreach event 15:31 every month as a staff, 15:33 we choose an event and we 15:35 needed somebody that could 15:36 lead that and, of course, 15:38 Amber stepped in and every 15:39 month she would be just 15:40 bringing people from the 15:42 community in that had needs, 15:43 if it was family community 15:44 services or there was a need 15:46 at the nursing home or just 15:47 whatever it was, she would be 15:48 bringing all of these things 15:49 in and it's been a powerful 15:51 testimony to me, personally, 15:53 just seeing that really, as I 15:56 think about it, the life of 15:57 Christ coming out through 15:59 Amber, serving others and that 16:01 made such a powerful 16:02 impression on broke people's hearts and I 23:24 stressed my parents out like 23:26 crazy and I really regret 23:29 putting them through that 23:31 when-- it's hard when you're 23:32 an addict, you can be so 23:33 selfish sometimes, you don't 23:35 even realize the people you're 23:36 hurting around you. 23:38 >> Do you have any advice for 23:39 someone who may be struggling 23:41 and going through some of the 23:42 stuff that you were going 23:43 through? 23:44 >> Absolutely, I always just 23:47 had a feeling in the back of 23:48 my mind that God wanted to 23:50 save me, you know, He 23:53 introduced my family to 23:56 Seventh-day Adventists and He 23:58 was there with me every day on 24:00 the streets, protecting me and 24:04 I never doubted that He wanted 24:06 me and He wanted, 24:09 you know, to save my soul. 24:11 And so now I, you know, can be 24:14 an example unto others that, 24:16 you're never too far gone, 24:18 you'll never be hidden 24:20 under some bridge so far away 24:22 that He can't see you, so... 24:24 >> God has taken you to so 24:27 many more places and I know 24:30 that you really have a heart 24:32 of service, can you tell us 24:34 about the different places 24:35 where God has led you? 24:37 >> Absolutely, yeah, I've 24:38 always wanted to help, even 24:40 when I was on the streets and 24:42 a lady would get her purse 24:43 stolen, you know, I remember 24:45 going back and putting 24:46 together a kit for her and 24:48 when I worked at the auction, 24:50 Linda would have things that 24:52 were not sellable so I would 24:53 take them home and sew them 24:55 and try and get them back out 24:56 on the streets and I think 24:58 that's-- you know, Curtis saw 25:00 that I enjoyed helping people 25:02 and that's one reason he 25:04 decided to support me as my 25:06 sponsor for me to go to the 25:08 Philippines so I've been there 25:09 twice now and yeah, it was 25:12 about a year after I'd gotten 25:14 off the streets and I was 25:15 hiking up a mountain in the 25:17 Philippines with medical 25:18 supplies and I just couldn't 25:19 believe that God could use a 25:22 wretch like me. 25:24 [RENÉ] That's beautiful. 25:25 [MIKE] And God has been 25:27 supporting you also to help 25:29 other people in the community 25:30 like Bags of Love. 25:31 >> Absolutely, yep. 25:33 We do have a potluck here once 25:35 a month and we share a meal 25:38 together, we celebrate 25:40 birthdays together and Curtis 25:42 always wants to know new ways 25:43 that we can help the community 25:45 for the month so I jumped 25:47 right on that and I come up 25:51 with ideas every month and 25:53 encourage other people at my 25:54 work and we always find 25:57 someone or some group to help. 26:01 [MIKE] So as we've come to the 26:02 end of our time, I wonder if 26:04 you could close with a word of 26:06 prayer for us again, Amber. 26:07 [AMBER] Absolutely. 26:10 Dear Lord, thank You so much 26:12 for this time together and may 26:15 my story be a light to 26:16 somebody out there. 26:19 Never give up, God never gives 26:21 up on us and God can turn it 26:24 around and He can use you and 26:27 the Bible is filled with 26:29 stories of Him using people 26:30 for the good. 26:32 So be one of those people, 26:34 start saying "yes" to God and 26:36 you'll be just amazed at what 26:38 He can do with you. 26:39 Amen. 26:40 >> Amen, amen. 26:41 Thank you so much, Amber, 26:43 for sharing your story 26:45 with us again. 26:45 >> Absolutely. 26:46 [RENÉ] Thank you. 26:47 That was beautiful. 26:48 Thank you, Amber. 26:52 >> Friends, today Amber
