07:37 >> Yeah. 07:39 My wife knew some individuals 07:42 from the Seventh-day Adventist 07:43 Church and eventually they came 07:46 and studied with us and we later 07:50 went and got baptized. 07:52 >> So you had that conviction 07:54 and then the Holy Spirit started 07:56 speaking to you and giving you a 07:58 stronger conviction. 08:00 >> All right, so nobody was 08:02 telling me this, but as I'm 08:04 reading my Bible, a conviction 08:07 to witness to people started to 08:10 become stronger and stronger in 08:11 my mind and in my heart. 08:13 And for me, growing up around 08:17 drug dealers and all these 08:18 people and Montreal is a pretty 08:21 dangerous place. 08:22 They have prostitutes, they have 08:25 strip clubs. 08:26 The thoughts in my mind, it's 08:27 like, I have to speak to these 08:29 individuals? 08:30 I am not gonna do that. 08:32 That is too scary, that is-- no, 08:34 I'm not gonna do it. 08:35 These people are gonna kill me. 08:36 So one night I said, "I'm not 08:41 gonna do it," and I said, 08:42 "I quit." 08:44 >> And you quit? 08:45 >> I quit. 08:46 This was after getting baptized. 08:48 It was not maybe three months in 08:51 from getting baptized, four 08:52 months, I don't remember the 08:54 exact time, but it was very 08:55 early from getting baptized. 08:57 I said, "Lord, I can't do this." 08:59 I said, "I quit," and that 09:01 was it. 09:01 >> Shortly after you stifled 09:03 those convictions and you 09:04 refused to listen to the Holy 09:05 Spirit telling you and prompting 09:07 you to witness and you were too 09:09 afraid, you said, "No, I'm not 09:10 doing that." 09:11 What happened? 09:12 >> Shortly after that, there was 09:14 a moment right after I said, 09:16 "I quit. 09:17 I'm not gonna do this 09:18 anymore..." 09:19 ...there was a moment where I 09:21 was feeling very flustered and I 09:24 took a car ride with my older 09:26 brother. 09:26 And while in that car ride, I 09:29 heard something in my head. 09:30 It's like time stopped and I 09:33 heard the words uttered, "You 09:35 are gonna die the worst possible 09:37 death because you showed 09:39 no mercy." 09:40 And I was wondering why am I 09:41 feeling this? 09:42 Why am I going through this 09:43 moment at this time? 09:45 And shortly after that, I was 09:49 plagued in my mind. 09:51 It's like a squirrel running on 09:52 a on a treadmill, just going in 09:54 circles. 09:55 Why did I hear this? 09:57 “You're gonna to die the worst 09:58 possible death.” 09:59 And this didn't just last days, 10:01 but weeks and months and it just 10:05 kept on going in my mind. 10:06 I wasn't the same until 10:09 eventually this led to a mental 10:11 break and I ended up in a 10:13 psychiatric ward. 10:15 >> So how did your mother, how 10:17 did your family relate to that? 10:19 >> So what happened was one day 10:21 my mom came to visit me at the 10:22 hospital and she's like, "Don't 10:26 take the meds," because she 10:27 knows, she's worked at a 10:28 hospital before like this and 10:30 she knows what has happened in 10:32 the past to those who kept 10:33 taking those medication. 10:34 So she's telling me, "Don't take 10:35 the medication, don't take the 10:37 medication." 10:38 And while she's there one day 10:40 visiting me, a letter goes home 10:43 and my sister gets the letter 10:44 and the letter is from the 10:45 hospital. 10:46 So she calls my mom and says, 10:49 "Mom, there's a letter that came 10:50 from the hospital." 10:51 So my mom being at the hospital, 10:53 she's like, "What is this letter 10:54 all about?" 10:55 And they said, "Oh, nothing to 10:57 worry about, nothing at all." 10:59 She goes home, it's a Thursday 11:00 afternoon, she goes home, she 11:02 reads the letter and basically 11:04 what this letter is for, it's 11:05 for a court date the next day to 11:08 take her rights away from me. 11:10 She gets up the morning, she 11:12 goes on her knees, she doesn't 11:13 have a lawyer, she doesn't have 11:14 anything, she just goes on her 11:15 knees and she prays. 11:17 My mom was and is a prayer 11:19 warrior, and by the time she's 11:21 done, I'm out of there. 11:25 Two weeks I was in there, the 11:27 longest two weeks of my life. 11:29 But after the court date I was 11:31 out of the hospital, but I was 11:34 still out of my mind. 11:36 >> So, Pastor Shaun, how did you 11:39 get into your right mind then? 11:41 >> Okay, so what happened was I 11:43 was sent to Trinidad and Tobago. 11:46 That was part of me coming out 11:47 there, coming out of the 11:48 hospital. 11:49 So I was in Trinidad Tobago for 11:52 two months. 11:53 And while I was there, I was 11:55 doing some very strange things. 11:56 I said I was still in my, not in 11:58 my right mind and... 12:01 ...my aunt one day she came to 12:04 me, she's like, "I took my 12:08 vacation so that you can be okay 12:11 and you're not." 12:13 And she's crying, she just 12:15 started crying. 12:16 And something with those tears 12:18 broke my heart. 12:19 And that for me, I don't know 12:22 what it was about that moment, 12:24 but that changed everything and 12:26 I slowly went back into my 12:27 right mind. 12:29 >> So that's when you were able 12:32 to contact your, was your 12:35 girlfriend and then she became 12:36 your wife, you got married. 12:38 Things are going on a good path 12:39 now and then the Holy Spirit was 12:42 speaking to you and saying, 12:43 "Get a certain book." 12:45 >> What happened was there was 12:47 this book called Bible Readings 12:49 for the Home, and someone gave 12:51 this random book to my wife. 12:54 And back in early, I read 12:56 through this book and I was 12:57 like, "There's some strange 12:59 doctrine in this. 13:00 I don't think I should read 13:01 this book." 13:02 And I just packed it away and I 13:04 thought that was the end of 13:06 this book. 13:07 And over time we traveled and we 13:10 moved different places and this 13:12 book kept trailing us. 13:14 We'll pack it, we'll unpack it, 13:15 we'll pack it, unpack it and 13:17 after several years, the Holy 13:20 Spirit said, "Go find this 13:22 book." 13:23 And what happened was I was 13:25 working on the Sabbath at this 13:26 time and I went and find that 13:31 big book, it's a very thick 13:32 book, and I was like, I don't 13:34 like reading these thick books, 13:35 but when the Holy Spirit 13:37 convicts, you do what the Holy 13:38 Spirit says. 13:39 So I started reading through 13:41 this thick book, and when it 13:43 came to the issue of the 13:44 Sabbath, because that's what 13:46 brought me into the Adventist 13:47 Church in the first place, when 13:49 it reached that place, I had 13:52 some decisions to make. 13:54 I'm working on the Sabbath and 13:57 it's telling us, the book is 13:58 saying how to keep the Sabbath 14:01 and I started becoming 14:02 convicted. 14:04 Do I continue to work on the 14:05 Sabbath or do I make a decision 14:07 for Christ? 14:08 And I told my wife, "I am going 14:10 to leave my job. 14:12 I'm gonna just tell my boss I'm 14:13 not gonna work anymore, I'm 14:14 gonna leave." 14:15 And I chickened out. 14:18 To be honest, I chickened out. 14:20 And then I prayed and I prayed 14:22 and I prayed and I said, "I'm 14:23 gonna do it. 14:24 I'm gonna tell my boss if they 14:26 don't give me the Sabbath off, 14:28 I'm quitting." 14:29 I told my boss I'm leaving 14:30 the job. 14:31 I didn't have any job to go to 14:32 at that moment. 14:33 I said, "I'm leaving the job." 14:35 And when I finally decided that 14:36 I'm gonna leave the job, one 14:38 week later, the job that I 14:40 applied for earlier finally 14:43 opens up. 14:44 And ever since then, I never had 14:46 to work on the Sabbath again. 14:48 What led me to become a pastor 14:51 was even though I grew up in 14:55 Montreal, one day my wife and I 14:58 were, and a friend, were 14:59 discussing, well, where can we 15:01 basically go to bring Christian 15:04 education for our children? 15:06 It was me more so and a friend, 15:08 and then me and my wife were 15:10 discussing after, where should 15:11 we move? 15:12 And both places collided 15:15 basically. 15:16 We end up moving to Alberta. 15:18 For me was basically I wanted my 15:21 kids to have Christian education 15:23 and we end up moving to Alberta 15:26 and they got Christian 15:27 education, but God also found a 15:30 way for me and my wife to go to 15:32 school in Alberta. 15:34 And while we were in Alberta, 15:37 one day at church, this 15:39 gentleman, he's up there, he's 15:41 sharing his testimony and he's, 15:43 he was a computer technician and 15:45 he says... 15:48 ...he was a computer technician, 15:49 but God led him to ministry. 15:51 And at the end of his, at the 15:55 end, he finished preaching, he 15:57 said, "Whatever God tells you to 15:59 do, you should do it." 16:01 And I'm like, "Lord, what do you 16:03 want me to do?" 16:05 And when I said that, the first 16:06 thing that I heard in my mind 16:08 was, "Be a pastor." 16:11 And I was like, "Okay, be a 16:13 pastor? 16:14 If you want me to be a pastor, 16:16 then have somebody tell me 16:18 without me saying anything." 16:20 So I said that and I left it 16:22 as that. 16:24 Then I went down in the church 16:25 basement where I met an old 16:27 friend from Calgary and I was 16:30 speaking to her and I was 16:31 sharing an experience I had 16:32 with God. 16:33 And at the end of that 16:35 conversation, the first words 16:38 that came out of her mouth was, 16:40 "You know what? 16:41 You should be a pastor." 16:42 And I was like [gasps] 16:44 blown away. 16:45 God answered so quickly? 16:48 So after that experience, other 16:51 people started coming up to me 16:53 and saying the same thing, "You 16:54 should be a pastor." 16:55 And in my second year, 16:58 because I went into education 17:00 and my wife was also in 17:01 education, in my second year of 17:03 education, after so many people 17:05 keep on pouring into me saying I 17:07 should switch, I switched from 17:11 education to theology. 17:13 Yeah. 17:14 So right idea, wrong classroom. 17:16 Yeah. 17:17 >> So you you became a pastor. 17:20 Then how did you relate to this 17:25 calling, this greatest fear that 17:27 you had, of witnessing to 17:29 others? 17:30 >> So I know witnessing comes 17:32 with its challenges, but how I 17:34 deal with it is that I have to 17:36 allow my-- the courage to 17:41 rise up and push down my fears. 17:43 I can't let my fears of speaking 17:46 to people and witnessing get the 17:48 best of me. 17:49 That's what happened when I was 17:50 younger and when God was saying 17:53 to witness, I allowed my fears 17:56 to get the best of me to the 17:57 point where it's like, 17:59 "No, I'm done." 18:00 And now I have to allow the 18:02 courage that God has given me to 18:04 push me, compel me, and push me 18:07 forward to preach the Gospel. 18:09 >> And you do it. 18:11 >> By God's grace. 18:12 >> Were you able to go back to 18:14 the people in Montreal then 18:15 and share? 18:16 >> Yeah, the funny thing is the 18:17 same people that I was afraid to 18:19 witness to, the drug dealers, 18:21 even some prostitutes, even some 18:23 people who lived that lifestyle, 18:25 it's the same people I'm able to 18:26 speak to and share my testimony 18:29 with, even right now. 18:31 >> And they didn't kill you. 18:32 >> They didn't kill me. 18:33 I'm still here sharing the 18:34 story. 18:35 Yeah, I lived to tell the story, 18:37 so... 18:37 >> So how do you understand that 18:40 those words that kept, like you 18:42 said, the squirrel on a wheel 18:44 going in your mind telling you 18:46 you're going to die the worst 18:47 possible death because you did 18:49 not show any mercy. 18:51 >> Now, when I look at those 18:53 words, I understand that it was 18:56 not from God, it was a direct 18:58 attack from the enemy. 19:00 And how I quantify this is that 19:03 God was preparing my life to 19:06 meet and minister to individuals 19:09 so that they don't have to die 19:11 the worst possible death which 19:13 is basically a death in a 19:15 Christless grave. 19:17 God was leading me on this 19:18 journey to become a pastor, to 19:20 share that message. 19:21 But at the same time, Satan, he 19:25 intercepted me and was making me 19:27 feel that I am gonna die the 19:29 worst possible death and God 19:31 showed me that me dying to self 19:35 is not the worst possible death 19:36 but the best possible death. 19:38 And in my fears, I wasn't 19:40 allowing myself to die that best 19:43 possible death, death to self. 19:45 I was so fearful, so terrified 19:47 that I was only allowing my 19:49 fears and what Satan pumped into 19:51 my brain to direct me. 19:53 But God continued to work and 19:56 minister to me until I was able 19:58 to stand up and push Satan 20:00 aside. 20:01 And now my job, my whole duty, 20:04 is to rescue people from 20:06 Christless graves, the worst 20:07 possible death you can 20:08 experience. 20:10 >> So Pastor Shaun, how often do 20:12 we have to die this death 20:14 to self? 20:16 >> The crazy thing about it is 20:18 that it's a daily thing. 20:20 It's sometimes it's even a 20:21 moment by moment thing. 20:24 And when we die, we allow others 20:27 to live. 20:28 So when we lay down selfishness, 20:30 when it's not our will, but the 20:33 Lord's will, others get to live 20:37 through that. 20:38 So I had to learn this and I'm 20:40 still learning this day by day 20:42 and moment by moment to 20:43 surrender and allow the Lord to 20:45 lead and guide me moment by 20:47 moment. 20:49 Yeah. 20:50 So... 20:51 >> So where do you find that 20:53 confidence to go forward? 20:56 How do you silence those 20:58 negative voices inside? 20:59 >> What I do, and this is 21:01 something I want to share with 21:03 everybody, there's a beautiful 21:06 story, it's found in Mark 21:08 chapter 5, Jesus comes and He 21:12 meets this man who is crying and 21:14 cutting himself. 21:15 Nobody can tame him, he's just 21:17 out of control. 21:19 What we will call now mental 21:21 health, but he is extreme mental 21:23 health. 21:25 And what happens, what's my 21:27 favorite part in this whole 21:29 story is verse 6, because after 21:33 he's crying, cutting himself, 21:35 nobody can tame him, He sees 21:37 Jesus coming and what he does is 21:40 so profound, I would like 21:42 everyone to take note of this. 21:45 He runs to Jesus' feet and he 21:48 begins to worship Him and when 21:51 he worships Him, the demons 21:53 take over. 21:55 Now, why that's a blessing is 21:56 that he's at Jesus's feet. 21:59 It doesn't matter if 10,000 22:01 demons take over, a million 22:03 demons take over, because he is 22:05 now at Jesus's feet. 22:07 And what I learned from this is 22:09 when I start getting any type of 22:10 spiritual attacks, instead of 22:13 trying to fight and battle it on 22:15 my own, I begin to pray in that 22:17 moment, "Lord, you see, what is 22:19 happening. 22:20 Please help me through this 22:21 moment. 22:22 Please guide me. 22:24 Please protect me." 22:25 And I just have that 22:26 conversation, me and Jesus 22:28 having that conversation, and in 22:30 that moment, all I have to do is 22:32 wait till the storm passes. 22:35 But now God is in control, Jesus 22:36 is in control. 22:38 I don't have to worry and I just 22:40 go through that. 22:41 So any time I have that mental 22:43 battle, it's not me alone. 22:45 Right away I intercept Jesus. 22:49 I used to watch WWF and what 22:51 happens is a man is getting beat 22:53 up and his partner is waiting to 22:54 be tagged in, he's waiting in a 22:55 corner just to be tagged in. 22:57 And the minute he tags in his 22:59 partner, it's over because his 23:03 partner was there waiting, ready 23:04 to jump into the battle and this 23:06 has been my saving grace time 23:08 and time again. 23:10 When I tag in Jesus right away, 23:13 He begins to work on the case. 23:15 So as you're, as others are 23:17 going through, tag in Jesus, do 23:19 not waste time. 23:21 Read that story, Mark chapter 5, 23:24 read it over and over. 23:25 And at the end of that story, 23:26 the beautiful part, the man that 23:28 was crying and cutting himself 23:30 is now clothed and in his right 23:32 mind, just like I'm here sitting 23:34 before you clothed, in my 23:36 right mind. 23:38 >> Were there are certain 23:39 things, just final questions, at 23:41 times that kind of tripped you 23:43 up, like music or movies or 23:45 things like that? 23:46 I know you talked to me 23:47 about that. 23:48 [SHAUN] Yeah, I had moments 23:49 where those things greatly 23:52 affected my mind, music 23:54 and movies. 23:56 But what happened was through a 23:58 friend, a mother of a friend, 24:00 through them, I learned Psalms 24:03 91 and I got some guidance from 24:07 a friend that God, or two 24:08 friends, and-- but when I 24:11 learned Psalms 91, that changed 24:14 the game, that helped me to 24:16 learn to dwell in the secret 24:17 place of the Most High and I 24:19 started gathering verses. 24:22 My mind was under such attack at 24:24 times that I had to start 24:25 gathering verses and memorize 24:27 these scriptures to fortify 24:29 my mind. 24:31 And that helped me greatly on 24:35 this journey that I'm now, I'm 24:37 still walking with the Lord, but 24:39 that changed, Psalms 91, 24:41 learning to dwell in the secret 24:43 place of the Most High and 24:44 coupled with Mark chapter 5, the 24:47 demoniac story, get to Jesus 24:49 right away. 24:50 Those two things solidified. 24:53 Plus the support from those, my 24:54 wife, those God sent on my 24:56 journey to help me, my mom, 24:58 my sister. 24:59 So much people. 25:00 My pastor, so much, my pastor at 25:03 the time, Pastor O'Neal Madden, 25:06 all these people helped me 25:07 on my journey. 25:09 >> Pastor Shaun, thank you so 25:11 much for sharing your story 25:13 with us. 25:14 We've come to the end of our 25:16 time together, but before we go, 25:19 I wonder if you could pray for 25:20 our viewers. 25:22 Perhaps there's someone watching 25:24 who is struggling with these 25:26 negative thoughts that are just 25:27 going over and over in their 25:29 minds, or they don't know what 25:32 God's will is for their lives. 25:34 So please, could you pray 25:36 for them? 25:37 >> Let us pray. 25:38 Heavenly Father, I'm first 25:42 thanking You for rescuing me. 25:44 And for those who are struggling 25:47 out there, for that one person 25:49 that is struggling with those 25:52 demonic thoughts, I pray that 25:54 You will rescue them the same 25:56 way that You have rescued me and 25:59 set them on their journey. 26:01 Help them to learn the 26:02 principles that I have learned, 26:05 how to dwell in the secret 26:07 place of the Most High, and how 26:09 to get to Jesus as soon as 26:11 possible. 26:13 Help them to remember to read 26:16 Mark chapter 5 and see how the 26:20 demoniac found hope and grace at 26:24 the feet of Jesus. 26:26 Be with each and every one of us 26:28 and all those that hear this 26:29 message. 26:30 Transform their lives and set 26:32 them on their way. 26:34 In Jesus' name, we pray, amen. 26:38 >> Pastor Shaun Young, thank you 26:39 so much for joining us on It Is 26:41 Written Canada. 26:42 >> It was a pleasure to be here. 26:47 >> Friends, you, too, can 26:48 experience the kind of 26:49 transformation that only God's 26:50 Word offers. 26:51 Our free offer for you today is 26:54 our Bible study guides. 26:56 >> Whether you want to learn the 26:58 major teachings of God's Word or 27:01 Bible prophecy, we can 27:03 personally assist you to find 27:05 answers for how to face the 27:07 issues and challenges you may be 27:10 dealing with right now. 27:13 Before you go, we would also 27:14 like to invite you to follow us 27:16 on Instagram and Facebook or 27:19 subscribe to our YouTube channel 27:22 and also listen to our podcasts. 27:25 And if you go to our website, 27:27 you can see our latest programs. 27:30 [MIKE] Friends, we recommend to 27:31 you this book, The Bible, where 27:34 it is recorded that Jesus found 27:36 His confidence to overcome 27:38 temptation through the Word of 27:40 His Father when He declared... 27:52 [inspirational music playing] 27:55 ♪♪ |
