Joey Aguilar 02:48 and I'm originally from 02:49 British Columbia. 02:51 I'm married to Esther Aguilar 02:53 and my─ I have two kids, 02:55 Sophia Emma and 02:57 Owen Gibson. 02:59 ♪ More than I could fathom ♪ 03:02 ♪ or comprehend ♪ 03:07 [JOEY] So I lived in 03:09 Vancouver Island in Victoria. 03:12 And when in grade five, my 03:14 family moved to Loma Linda, we 03:16 had family in Loma Linda, my 03:18 had family in Loma Linda, my 03:19 passion for music, I guess, has 03:20 always been there. 03:22 I would do special musics... 03:25 ...when I was young in 03:28 Loma Linda, Filipino church, 03:30 youth choirs... 03:32 My cousins and a lot of 03:33 the youth were always 03:36 in bands, I guess. 03:38 So we would have all these 03:39 different musical groups. 03:42 So I attended Loma Linda 03:44 Elementary and then junior high 03:47 and the Academy, and then I left 03:49 halfway through the school year 03:50 and went to Orangewood Academy 03:52 and there─ Orangewood Academy 03:54 is a smaller school 03:56 so it actually gave me 03:59 more of an opportunity to 04:01 take up some leadership. 04:03 I was assigned 04:05 to do music in their chapels, 04:08 and then I was able to use my 04:11 composing skills. 04:13 Being given the platform in 04:15 Being given the platform in 04:16 these youth programs to be able 04:18 to demonstrate my music and 04:21 play these songs 04:23 and everything. 04:25 I can't say that I 04:27 had a strong 04:29 spiritual relationship 04:31 back then, but I was 04:33 kept in the church 04:35 through those relationships. 04:37 ♪ Praise God from whom ♪ 04:42 ♪ all blessings flow ♪ 04:46 [JOEY] I went to La Sierra 04:47 University and I was in the 04:49 music program there and 04:53 joined the La Sierra University 04:55 Chamber Singers, the vocal 04:57 octet, and I was able to 05:00 join a guys group, just a few of 05:03 my friends, just on the side. 05:06 And we called ourselves 05:07 And we called ourselves 05:08 "Christians by Faith," 05:09 CBF for short. 05:11 And we would sing at, you know, 05:13 the local churches in the 05:14 Glendale, LA, Loma Linda area. 05:19 And the... 05:21 ...school even would use us as 05:24 one of their promotional groups. 05:26 And we would go to camp meetings 05:29 and youth events and sing there. 05:32 Well, our group started to 05:34 get into secular... 05:38 ...venues and secular community 05:40 events and everything. 05:41 [rock music playing] 05:44 [JOEY] And we... 05:45 [JOEY] And we... 05:47 ...would start─ started opening 05:49 for Filipino artists, well-known 05:51 celebrities and all that. 05:54 [contemplative music] 05:57 [JOEY] We got a manager, 05:59 who then in turn 05:59 who then in turn 06:02 got us into more 06:03 of the entertainment. 06:06 So the more we were 06:08 in the spotlight and 06:10 it was great, it was 06:12 empowering. 06:14 One of the... 06:17 ...producers for the biggest... 06:20 ...film and music industries 06:23 in the Philippines and... 06:26 ...so he came over to 06:29 the Beverly Hills area 06:31 in one of the suites and 06:32 told our manager, "Hey, okay, 06:34 I wanna hear them. 06:36 Come to my, you know, hotel 06:38 suite at this time." 06:40 So we went there and 06:42 he was there, you know, 06:44 in the dining room and we, 06:46 you know, we stood there and he 06:48 said, "Okay, let me hear you." 06:49 So we sang 06:51 for him a couple of songs. 06:55 And he said, "Okay. 06:58 I can give you a 07:00 five record deal. 07:03 And─ but the first thing that 07:05 we're gonna have to do, we're 07:06 gonna have to make some changes. 07:08 First thing we're gonna have to 07:09 do is we have to change your 07:10 name because, you know, 07:12 I have to be honest, 07:14 this is a... 07:16 ...primarily a business. 07:18 And if─ I can't sell the name... 07:22 ...”Christians by Faith,” 07:23 you know, anything that says 07:26 anything Christian or the name 07:27 of Jesus in unorthodox 07:28 countries, I can't sell. 07:30 So we're gonna have to change 07:31 your name, and we're gonna have 07:32 to change your image." 07:36 And... 07:38 ...you know, so we looked at 07:39 each other like, okay... 07:41 Then he said, you know, "Maybe 07:43 after the third album... 07:47 ...we'll see, but you can... 07:51 ...probably do a Christian 07:52 values song, 07:54 but still not be Christian and 07:57 not mention Jesus or anything 07:59 of the faith." 08:02 Our image idea of, 08:04 you know, the boy band era, it 08:06 was back then during the boy 08:07 band, that we would have more of 08:10 a bad boy kind of an image. 08:12 And... 08:13 ...if any of us had girlfriends 08:15 that our private lives had to be 08:17 even more private and we 08:18 couldn't, you know, let the 08:20 public know that we had 08:22 girlfriends, you know, 08:24 so we had to appear available 08:25 for our fans. 08:31 So we said thank you and 08:34 we left there and he─ 08:37 I had an assignment to 08:39 write some, try and write some 08:41 Top 40 songs. 08:43 And... 08:45 ...we also had a huge decision 08:46 to make. 08:48 We went back and we 08:50 met together, our group, 08:52 and some of us, 08:54 you know, we were─ this is 08:55 where you could really see the 08:56 divide in our group and some of 08:58 us were like, "I don't know..." 08:59 You know, and then 09:01 some of us were like, "Yeah," 09:03 you know, "let's do it. 09:04 This is an opportunity 09:05 of a lifetime. 09:06 Let's do this." 09:07 And then and the discussion came 09:09 and we're like, "Yeah, but 09:11 where will we be? 09:13 Like, who will we be 09:15 after three albums? 09:17 Who will we become? 09:18 Who will we be after 09:19 five albums?" 09:21 And it actually 09:24 caused tension in our group. 09:28 It got to a point where 09:30 actually had a physical fight... 09:34 ...and then it took some of our, 09:36 my─ the guys in our group had to 09:38 pull us back and to sadly say 09:39 was me, that's why it's hitting. 09:42 And I fought with one of them. 09:45 All of this because, you know, 09:47 we realize, wait, 09:48 what are we doing? 09:52 The reason why it's really 09:53 hitting me is because these were 09:56 my brothers. 09:57 [afflicted music] 10:00 And we were very close. 10:01 And... 10:04 ...I'm happy to say that they 10:05 are still close 10:07 through all of this 10:08 even still now. 10:10 But back then, it was hard. 10:13 It was hard 10:15 to have that 10:17 with them. 10:20 And it was intense. 10:21 It was... 10:23 ...you know, it made me realize, 10:24 wait, I'm fighting my brothers 10:25 here, you know. 10:27 And it was almost like─ 10:29 because that tension, it was 10:31 like, "This is the moment, 10:32 this is our opportunity that's 10:35 being presented to us to go─ 10:37 to become famous, you know, 10:39 to go that route. 10:42 And you guys are doubting that 10:45 right now." 10:46 Like... 10:48 ...that's what was going through 10:50 the mind. 10:51 And when we had that... 10:57 ...tension and that fight, 10:59 my friends pulled us apart. 11:02 And I said, "What do you─" 11:04 They said, "What are you doing? 11:05 You guys are brothers." 11:08 And I─ that's when I realized, 11:11 "Wow, what are we doing? 11:13 What have we already become? 11:15 [laughs] 11:17 And we haven't even started." 11:20 So then we sat down... 11:25 ...and we thought to ourselves, 11:27 we need to get back 11:28 to who we are and... 11:32 ...where did this group start? 11:34 Why did this group start? 11:37 And we... 11:40 ...realized that it started 11:42 in the church. 11:43 Our group started in the church. 11:45 We have─ our name is 11:46 Christians by Faith. 11:49 And so we sat down 11:52 together and we prayed. 11:54 You know, music, especially 11:55 contemporary music back then, 11:57 wasn't, like, too accepted 12:00 in the church yet. 12:01 And being in that 12:04 youth group or that friend group 12:07 was all about music. 12:10 Yeah, it really hurt. 12:11 And... 12:14 ...I could count 12:16 how many friends I had left 12:18 in the church. 12:21 So, yeah, it hurt. 12:25 So then we 12:27 got together, we prayed, 12:28 and then we decided as a group 12:31 that we weren't going to 12:33 accept the... 12:36 ...the contract. 12:38 >> He was really excited 12:39 about it. 12:40 It was a really 12:42 great chance for him 12:44 to use his talents. 12:47 But there was something just 12:48 a little bit off about it. 12:51 He would always come back and 12:52 ask, you know, "What do you 12:53 think about this?" 12:54 They were asking the guys to 12:56 change their images, and he 12:58 couldn't say that he was married 13:01 and they wanted them to change 13:02 their name. 13:03 And it was a little bit odd, 13:06 but still, what a great 13:07 opportunity... 13:09 ...to use his talents. 13:11 We would pray about it 13:12 and there was just something 13:13 a little bit odd. 13:16 And then it just so happened 13:18 that I had a medical 13:21 condition that I had to actually 13:22 go back to Canada. 13:23 I have to say that it was a big 13:25 sacrifice on his part, because 13:28 I always wondered what would 13:29 happen here in Vancouver if 13:32 there weren't the same 13:34 opportunities. 13:35 [melancholy music] 13:38 ♪♪ 13:41 [JOEY] So coming back to 13:42 Vancouver, 13:43 my wife had to get 13:45 BC certified, and so she went 13:47 back to school. 13:49 And then 13:51 I was trying to find 13:52 where I fit in here. 13:54 All during this time, when we 13:55 were trying to find ourselves, 13:57 we went to Filipino church and 13:59 we would go, you know, checking 14:01 out different churches around 14:03 Vancouver. 14:04 And then I was invited to 14:06 Vancouver Central Church, 14:08 to this church... 14:10 ...to do special music. 14:11 ...to do special music. 14:13 And so I came and I sang 14:16 in this stage for special music. 14:19 And it actually 14:21 took me by surprise because... 14:25 ...when I sang, it was 14:26 dead silent. 14:28 And then I was about to leave 14:31 because I was gonna go back to 14:32 the Filipino church and the 14:34 pastor at that time, 14:36 Pastor Don Kim, chased us 14:39 into the lobby area 14:41 and he said, "Hey," you 14:43 know, like, "would you consider 14:45 being the worship leader... 14:49 ...in this church?" 14:51 And I'm like, "Oh, okay." 14:53 I was like, my first thought 14:55 was, "What's a worship leader?" 14:57 [laughs] 14:58 I didn't know because I guess 15:00 back in that time, the worship 15:02 movement was still, was... 15:05 ...just evolving. 15:08 And so I was like, "Oh, sure. 15:11 Let me consider it." 15:13 My wife had an appointment, 15:14 a prenatal appointment 15:15 that same week, and so we went. 15:17 And we entered the... 15:21 ...waiting area. 15:23 And mind you, 15:24 I have never, ever 15:27 met Pastor Don Kim. 15:29 But who do you think 15:31 was in that waiting room when we 15:33 went in there? 15:35 Pastor Don Kim. 15:36 [laughs] 15:37 And so like, "Oh, hi, Pastor 15:39 Don Kim!" 15:40 Maybe a day or two 15:42 after that, 15:43 went to Safeway, did our 15:45 groceries. 15:46 Again, Pastor Don Kim. 15:48 We're like, 15:49 "Hi, Pastor Don Kim!" 15:50 [laughs] 15:52 And my wife and I said... 15:55 "...If this is not a sign, 15:57 this has never happened before. 15:59 And so if this is not a sign 16:01 from God, then I don't know 16:03 what is." 16:04 So we called Pastor Kim and we 16:05 said okay. 16:07 ♪ Praise God from whom ♪ 16:12 ♪ all blessings flow ♪ 16:18 [JOEY] Eventually I realized 16:19 that worship was more 16:22 than the songs you sing, 16:24 more than the words you hear, 16:26 more than a sermon. 16:28 Worship is life 16:30 because God first loved us, 16:32 right, so He's always been there 16:34 from the beginning. 16:36 And it's a 16:38 reaction of our lives, 16:40 a reaction to Him 16:43 first loving us and being there. 16:45 And so we bring that as a 16:47 congregation all together, 16:50 and it's a reaction, our songs, 16:51 our praise, it's... 16:54 ...a response of life. 16:57 And that's what I learned, 16:59 what worship was. 16:59 what worship was. 17:00 [ESTHER] He was here 17:01 worship leading when I had our 17:04 daughter and I was studying to 17:05 daughter and I was studying to 17:06 write the board exam and I 17:08 thought, you know, I'm just so 17:10 grateful that he is using his 17:13 God given talents. 17:15 We felt like, you know, this is 17:16 We felt like, you know, this is 17:16 our landing place, this is our 17:18 home, this is where we wanna 17:19 raise our family. 17:21 I started... 17:22 ...working while he was here 17:24 at the church, and I knew, 17:27 I mean, it was just part time, 17:27 I mean, it was just part time, 17:28 but I thought, you know, this is 17:29 important, he's doing something 17:31 that he loves, he's using his 17:34 talents for God, and he was 17:37 feeling fulfilled. 17:39 >> In the worship teams that... 17:42 ...I mentored, that was the 17:44 number one, was take the focus 17:46 off of you and 17:49 bring it to God. 17:51 >> He had been asked to change 17:52 the church. 17:53 It was a very conservative 17:55 church, and they wanted it to be 17:57 more contemporary and... 17:59 ...he was able to do that, 18:01 very slowly, but with the 18:03 help and support of the 18:05 leadership. 18:06 It─ he knew that we were all on 18:09 the same page and I thought, 18:10 what a really great place for us 18:13 to be in and that I had an 18:15 opportunity to continue to work 18:17 and support our family, too, so 18:19 that he could still continue 18:20 to work in serving 18:22 Oak Ridge Church. 18:25 >> And I was given the 18:26 opportunity also... 18:28 ...to... 18:30 ...teach at Deer Lake School 18:32 in the media and 18:35 senior choir. 18:37 So went back to school 18:40 and I went to BCIT 18:42 and to Van Arts to upgrade 18:44 and to Van Arts to upgrade 18:45 my teaching certificate. 18:46 And then K through 3 choirs, 18:48 which I love. 18:50 [ESTHER] I remember he would 18:51 come home from teaching saying, 18:52 come home from teaching saying, 18:52 "Wow, this is great. 18:54 I love teaching media, I love 18:57 teaching music." 18:58 So he was doing both worship 18:59 ministry at Oak Ridge and at 19:02 Deer Lake School, and started to 19:04 use all of these different 19:06 talents that you would think 19:07 were not... 19:10 ...that weren't, they weren't 19:12 very similar, but they were very 19:14 complementary because he was 19:15 still able to use his 19:17 creativity. 19:19 What's really great about 19:20 worship ministry is that 19:23 there were a lot of young people 19:24 that also wanted to participate. 19:26 And so he took it 19:29 to heart and he would invite 19:31 all the young people to come in 19:33 and join. 19:34 "If you don't know how to play, 19:36 that's okay. 19:37 We can learn together." 19:38 And he thought, "Okay, so our 19:40 group is getting a little large. 19:42 If they're not─ if they can't be 19:44 on praise team every Sabbath, 19:46 where are they gonna go?" 19:48 And so he said, "We really need 19:49 a youth leader." 19:51 And so I thought─ he's like, 19:52 "Do you think you can start a 19:53 youth group during Sabbath 19:55 school so that while the other 19:57 band is playing and practising, 19:59 the other young people have a 20:00 place to go?" 20:02 And so I said, "Sure, I'll take 20:04 the youth group." 20:05 And it ended up being a 20:07 ten year, ten-plus year 20:09 ministry with him. 20:10 So he was doing the worship 20:12 team and I was leading the 20:14 youth class. 20:15 And it was very rewarding. 20:19 We would open up our home, they 20:21 would come on Saturday nights 20:24 and just jam, bring their 20:26 instruments, I would cook, 20:28 we would turn it into like a 20:29 movie night. 20:30 It just became a really great, 20:32 healthy community for the 20:34 young people. 20:35 And those are our best years, 20:38 I have to say, and our kids grew 20:39 up around that. 20:41 They didn't know any different. 20:43 They thought, "Oh, this is 20:44 normal, like, we always have 20:45 people over at our house." 20:47 >> And I remember being 20:49 super young and seeing... 20:53 ...this guy named Marcus. 20:55 He was playing the drums 20:56 and I always thought he was 20:57 super cool. 20:59 I always watched just the drums 21:00 when there was worship and I 21:02 remember always being in the 21:03 front row. 21:04 And one day I remember asking 21:05 my parents, "Can I learn 21:07 the drums?" 21:08 And without hesitation they just 21:10 said yes and bought me a drum 21:11 set and just put it in my room 21:13 and let me start banging on the 21:14 drums right away. 21:16 And it was never 21:18 pushed on me, like worship or 21:21 feeling the need to do all these 21:22 things, I was always seeking out 21:24 to do it, and they always just 21:25 gave me the means to 21:27 or put me in that situation 21:29 where I had the opportunity. 21:29 where I had the opportunity. 21:30 [singing and drumming] 21:33 ♪♪ 21:36 [JOEY] Ready? 21:37 [guitar strumming] 21:38 [SOPHIA] Growing up and 21:39 observing, you know, my parents' 21:41 spiritual journey, it really 21:43 inspired me, and I would say 21:45 my brother as well. 21:47 ♪ ...loves a cheerful giver ♪ 21:48 ♪ ha, ha, ha... ♪ 21:50 >> Turning the worship band 21:53 into something fun 21:55 that everyone wanted to join in 21:57 doing and everyone wanted to be 21:59 a part of it, everyone felt like 22:01 that they had a place. 22:02 >> So the British Columbia 22:03 Conference Communication 22:05 Director back then, Charles 22:07 Aguilar, I know we have the same 22:08 last name, good family friends. 22:11 So Charles moved on and 22:13 joined the ADRA team, and the 22:15 British Columbia conference was 22:16 looking for a communication 22:18 director to take over. 22:19 And they asked me to─ 22:22 if I would consider. 22:23 >> Each of those experiences 22:26 actually built him 22:28 in a way that God needed 22:30 him to be. 22:31 >> All these years, I've loved 22:33 working in the local church, and 22:35 I still love working in the 22:36 local church. 22:37 And then joining the conference, 22:39 I realized that 22:42 I'm using my─ the talents that 22:44 God's given me to reach 22:46 whole churches, like many 22:47 churches and many schools now. 22:50 So I just love that. 22:53 ♪ Thou rising moon ♪ 22:55 ♪ in praise rejoice ♪ 22:59 [JOEY] So looking back at when 23:02 we were performing that 23:03 we were performing that 23:04 the focus was on us, 23:06 but then in worship, 23:09 it's not about us. 23:10 We let go of ourselves 23:12 and bring that attention 23:15 this way and up to God. 23:17 So it's not, it's not about us. 23:19 ♪ ...lift me up ♪ 23:20 ♪ (Lord, lift me up) ♪ 23:22 ♪ when I am weak ♪ 23:23 ♪ (when I am weak) ♪ 23:25 ♪ Soon my heart begins to feel ♪ 23:29 ♪ a miracle happening in me ♪ 23:32 ♪ And love is real ♪ 23:34 ♪ (And love is real) ♪ 23:36 ♪ And love can heal ♪ 23:37 ♪ (And love can heal) ♪ 23:39 ♪ You came with ♪ 23:41 ♪ open arms I see ♪ 23:43 ♪ You made a miracle of me ♪ 23:46 ♪ Oh, Lord ♪ 23:48 ♪♪ 24:00 [RENÉ] As Joey discovered, 24:02 worship is more than the songs 24:04 you sing. 24:06 More than the words you hear. 24:08 More than a sermon. 24:10 Worship is life, a response to 24:13 God, the Giver of Life. 24:16 The one who first loved us. 24:18 The one who has always been 24:20 there for us. 24:22 [MIKE] Joey's journey led him to 24:23 see how, when he was performing 24:27 in his band, the focus was on 24:28 himself and his band members. 24:31 But in worship it is 24:33 not about us. 24:34 Instead, in worship, we turn our 24:37 attention upward to God, 24:39 who is above us. 24:41 [RENÉ] In learning and 24:42 experiencing that vital lesson, 24:45 Joey was able to let go of 24:47 himself and to teach his worship 24:50 teams to let go of themselves 24:53 and bring their focus to God. 24:56 Joey's journey reminds us of the 24:59 power of faith and family 25:02 in making life's toughest 25:03 decisions. 25:05 By choosing to honour his 25:07 identity and values over worldly 25:07 identity and values over worldly 25:09 fame, he lived out the truth 25:12 of Jesus's prayer 25:14 in John 17, 25:16 of being in the world, 25:18 but not of the world. 25:21 Today, Joey stands as an 25:24 inspiration to many who have 25:26 faced similar struggles. 25:28 And above all, 25:30 he stands tall as a man of 25:32 integrity, a devoted husband 25:35 and father, and a true 25:37 testament to God's grace, 25:40 guidance, and goodness. 25:43 >> Joey's story brings to mind 25:45 a few inspiring sentences 25:47 from this little book, 25:49 Help In Daily Living. 26:21 >> This was
