00:14 >>Eric Flickinger: Welcome to "Sabbath School,"
00:16 brought to you by It Is Written.
00:18 We're glad that you could join us this week
00:19 as we continue looking at "The Great Controversy,"
00:23 an amazing theme that stretches through the Bible.
00:26 This week, we're going to be looking at study number eight,
00:29 "Light From the Sanctuary."
00:31 Let's begin with prayer.
00:32 Father, we ask that You'll bless us this week
00:34 as You have in the past and help us to understand
00:37 where we are in the light of history and especially
00:41 how the sanctuary helps us to understand
00:43 our place and time.
00:45 We ask that You'll bless our time together,
00:46 and we thank You in Jesus' name, amen.
00:50 Well, we're grateful this week once again to have with us
00:53 the author of this quarter's "Sabbath School" lesson,
00:55 Pastor Mark Finley.
00:57 He is an international speaker, evangelist, and author.
01:00 Pastor Mark, welcome back again.
01:02 >>Mark Finley: I am delighted to be here.
01:03 And you know, this subject on the sanctuary
01:05 is one of the central subjects of the Bible.
01:07 Many Christians don't understand it or don't study it,
01:10 but it is Christ, Christ, and more of Jesus.
01:13 >>Eric: And as we delve into this week's lesson,
01:15 it's going to become more and more evident.
01:18 Let's start with this.
01:19 It's called "Light from the Sanctuary."
01:21 When we look at this week's lesson study title,
01:26 "Light from the Sanctuary," which sanctuary?
01:28 The Bible indicates that there are at least two sanctuaries.
01:31 What are these sanctuaries?
01:32 And why are they important for us to understand?
01:35 >>Mark: When God let Israel out of Egypt, he said to Moses
01:40 in Exodus 25 and verse 8,
01:44 "Let them make me a sanctuary,
01:46 that I [might] dwell among them."
01:49 The Old Testament sanctuary was one in which there were
01:54 two basic services, the service of a dying lamb
01:58 and the service of a living priest.
02:01 Every day sacrifices were offered in the court.
02:06 Every day the priest took the blood of the animal
02:09 or ate part of the animal and entered into the sanctuary.
02:14 Sin was transferred from the sinner to the substitute
02:18 on into the sanctuary via the blood.
02:20 Once a year on the Day of Atonement,
02:23 the high priest went in to do what was called
02:25 the cleansing of the sanctuary.
02:27 So that was the earthly sanctuary.
02:29 Everything done in that pointed forward to Christ's ministry.
02:35 The court represented Christ's death on the cross.
02:39 But then Jesus' ascension in ministry
02:42 in the heavenly sanctuary--
02:43 so two sanctuaries, an earthly sanctuary,
02:46 that--as we read here: "Let them make me a sanctuary,
02:49 that I [might] dwell among them."
02:50 Verse 9: "According to all that I show you,...
02:53 "the pattern of the tabernacle...
02:55 the pattern of...its furnishings."
02:57 So the earthly sanctuary is a pattern,
02:59 a scale model of the great heavenly sanctuary
03:02 to teach us something about the plan of salvation.
03:04 >>Eric: So two different sanctuaries, one earthly
03:06 built on the heavenly sanctuary, but you also mentioned
03:10 that there are a couple of different services.
03:12 Explain those two services to us just a little bit more
03:14 so we can better understand those.
03:16 >>Mark: In the daily service, when a sinner sinned,
03:19 he brought his sacrifice to the sanctuary.
03:23 Coming to the court, the sinner held his hands
03:26 over the head of the sacrifice.
03:29 It was there that he confessed his sin
03:32 over the head of the sacrifice.
03:34 The sin was transferred from the sinner to the sacrifice.
03:39 Sacrifice was then offered.
03:41 The sinner had to slay the sacrifice,
03:43 indicating that his sin actually had,
03:47 had brought death, that the wage of sin was death.
03:50 Sacrifice then was either burned on the altar in the court,
03:56 some of it may be eaten, and via the priest brought into,
04:00 with the blood, into the holy place of the sanctuary.
04:05 This is called the daily service,
04:07 sins confessed, blood brought in,
04:10 sprinkled before the veil, before the law of God
04:14 that was broken in the most holy place beyond the veil.
04:19 Once a year, the high priest entered into the sanctuary
04:25 with blood that was not sin-tinged blood but pure,
04:31 and--because no sin was offered over the head of the sacrifice--
04:35 then that blood was sprinkled before the mercy seat,
04:40 cleansing, and then taken out of the sanctuary.
04:45 Through the priest, sin was brought out,
04:48 confessed over the head of the scapegoat.
04:51 The scapegoat then was separated from the camp of Israel.
04:53 But now during all this time, Israel gathered around
04:56 on the Day of Atonement and prayed and sought God
05:01 and repented of their sin.
05:03 So in these two services represent Christ's work for us
05:08 as sacrifice and priest in that daily service every day.
05:13 But then there's that special day called the Day of Atonement,
05:16 the Day of Judgment that we're living in now
05:18 that we pointed out in the last lesson
05:20 where all Israel gathered around the camp.
05:22 So this is the Day of Atonement, time of the end,
05:25 a time for God's people to be serious about their faith,
05:28 serious about their religion,
05:30 a time for God's people to be in confession, repentance,
05:33 seeking God, opening their hearts to God,
05:35 and asking Him to cleanse them.
05:38 >>Eric: So we have now a general idea and understanding
05:41 of the daily service and the yearly service
05:45 on the Day of Atonement.
05:47 And you mentioned when we began
05:49 that the sanctuary service is all about Jesus,
05:52 that you find Jesus permeating this service.
05:56 So we hear about the priest bringing the lamb
05:59 and slaying it and bringing the blood in and so forth.
06:02 Where do we find Jesus in all of this?
06:04 How does He, how does He percolate to the top,
06:07 if we rightly understand these services?
06:11 >>Mark: First, the sinner could not forgive their own sins.
06:15 They had to come with this lamb.
06:18 We come with the Lamb of God.
06:19 John the Baptist in John 1, verse 29,
06:22 speaking about Jesus, said,
06:23 "Behold! The Lamb of God [that] takes away
06:26 the sin of the world!"
06:27 So first we see Jesus in the dying lamb
06:31 or the dying sacrifice.
06:33 There are multiple kinds of sacrifices.
06:35 As the priest enters into the sanctuary,
06:37 there's the table of showbread.
06:39 We see there Jesus, the bread of life.
06:41 There is the candlestick.
06:43 We see Jesus as the light of our life.
06:46 There is the incense.
06:48 We see Jesus mingling His prayers with ours.
06:51 When you enter into the most holy place of the sanctuary,
06:55 we see Jesus between the cherubim
07:00 with the Father on the throne
07:02 as the Shekinah glory manifests itself.
07:06 Jesus is the priest. Jesus is the lamb.
07:09 He's the dying lamb, He's the living priest,
07:11 and we find this illusion throughout
07:14 the book of Hebrews, particularly.
07:16 In the book of Hebrews, which is the New Testament book
07:19 on the sanctuary, we see Jesus' sacrifices
07:23 better than earthly sacrifices.
07:25 Jesus' priesthood is better than the earthly priesthood.
07:28 Jesus' sanctuary in heaven is better
07:31 than the earthly sanctuary.
07:34 So it's all about Jesus.
07:35 >>Eric: So the book of Hebrews, some great chapters,
07:37 Hebrews 8, Hebrews 9--
07:39 I mean, they're all great chapters,
07:40 but in Hebrews 8 and Hebrews 9 we see clearly
07:42 the sanctuary message, the sanctuary picture there.
07:46 When we talk about the cleansing of the sanctuary,
07:48 the Day of Atonement, bring that together for us
07:51 with the pre-Advent judgment.
07:54 How does--when Jesus is coming back, He needs to know
07:57 what rewards to give different people.
08:00 So it would make sense that there would have to be
08:01 some sort of a judgment that takes place prior to that.
08:05 How does that all fit together for us?
08:07 >>Mark: The purpose of the pre-Advent judgment
08:10 or the investigative judgment
08:12 is not to tell God who's saved or lost.
08:15 He already knows that. [chuckling] He knows everything.
08:17 But it's to reveal to the entire universe that God has done
08:21 everything He could to save every human being.
08:24 You know, in Revelation, chapter 14, verse 7,
08:31 in that great message called the three angels' messages,
08:36 Revelation 14, verse 7, says,
08:41 "Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment
08:46 "has come; and worship Him [that] made heaven...earth,
08:49 the sea and [the fountains] of waters."
08:51 Now, notice the hour of God's judgment has come.
08:54 The whole universe looks in on the judgment scene.
08:57 That's what Daniel 7 says:
08:58 Thousands times ten thousand came before Him;
09:02 "The judgment was set,... the books were opened."
09:05 So there in the cosmic judgment, God reveals that there's
09:11 nothing else He could have done to save humanity.
09:14 He sent His Son to come to die.
09:19 He sent the Holy Spirit to impress our hearts.
09:22 He revealed Himself through the providences of life.
09:26 Christ has done everything He could to save us.
09:30 And it says the hour of God's judgment has come.
09:33 So Revelation says the judgment hour is here.
09:36 You know, Jesus in Matthew 12, verse 36, says that,
09:42 "Every idle word...men shall speak,
09:44 they shall give account... in the day of judgment."
09:47 The apostle Paul says
09:48 every one of us will give account of himself before God.
09:51 So Jesus and Paul point forward to a future judgment.
09:55 But Revelation says the hour of God's judgment has come.
09:58 Why? Revelation, chapter 22 puts it this way.
10:04 Revelation, chapter 22, verse 11 and then 12,
10:08 could you read those for us, Eric?
10:10 >>Eric: "He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is
10:14 "filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous,
10:18 "let him be righteous still;
10:20 "he who is holy, let him be holy still.
10:23 "And behold, I am coming quickly, and my reward
10:25 is with me, to give to every one according to his work."
10:29 >>Mark: So Jesus is coming to give out the rewards.
10:32 Before He comes, the decree goes forth that every human being
10:36 has fixed their character by their choices.
10:39 So God has worked in every life to save every human being.
10:44 There's nothing more that God could have done to save us
10:48 than He hasn't done.
10:50 The decree goes forth-- he that is righteous,
10:52 let him be righteous still;
10:53 he that is holy, let him be holy still;
10:55 he that is unrighteous, let him be unrighteous still,
10:57 and he that is unholy, let him be unholy still.
11:00 Every person has made their final irrevocable choice.
11:04 And the judgment in heaven acknowledges the choices
11:07 that people have made for or against Christ.
11:11 So the judgment reveals God's love, and it reveals
11:15 that those who are not saved, those that are lost
11:18 are saved because of their choices,
11:20 not because of some arbitrary act on the part of God.
11:23 >>Eric: So some people get this idea that God's up there looking
11:25 for reasons to condemn people, to shoot the proverbial
11:29 lightning bolt from His fingertips, as it were.
11:31 That's not the picture that we get here of all, at all.
11:33 It's a picture of a loving God. >>Mark: It is.
11:35 And you know, one of the passages that really has
11:39 impacted my life recently--you know, I've read it many times--
11:43 is Daniel, chapter 7.
11:46 And it talks about what happens in the judgment.
11:49 Daniel 7, verse 21 and 22, Daniel 7, verse 21 and 22:
11:58 "I was watching; and the same horn"--that's the little horn,
12:02 the medieval church, the papal power revived in the last days--
12:06 "was making war against the saints, and prevailing
12:09 "against them, until the Ancient of Days came,
12:12 "and a judgment was made in favor of the saints of [God],
12:15 and the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom."
12:18 So what this text is saying is that all evil will be destroyed.
12:22 And judgment is placed in favor of the people of God.
12:27 So why is the judgment good news?
12:30 Because wickedness, evil destroyed forever.
12:34 God's people with Christ receive the eternal everlasting kingdom
12:39 to live and reign with Jesus forever.
12:42 >>Eric: Now, if somebody is studying this, learning about it

15:00 We're taking a look at "Light From the Sanctuary"
15:03 in this week's lesson.
15:05 Pastor Mark, you've spoken at least a little bit on Jesus
15:08 and where we see Him.
15:10 But expound to us or expand on His role just a little bit,
15:13 where we find Him in the judgment.
15:16 >>Mark: You know, in-- if this were an earthly court
15:20 in the judgment,
15:21 we would say Jesus has a conflict of interest.
15:25 Here's why: Jesus, in talking about the judgment, said,
15:29 "The Father judges no [man],
15:31 but [commits] all judgment to the Son"--
15:34 in the Gospel of John. So Jesus is the judge.
15:36 But then if you look at 1 John--
15:39 let's go over to 1 John. Jesus is not only the judge,
15:45 but here, 1 John, chapter 2,
15:50 verse 1 and 2--so, Pastor Eric, go ahead.
15:54 >>Eric: "My little children, these things I write to you,
15:57 "so that you may not sin.

16:04 "And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins,
16:08 and not for ours only but also for the whole world."
16:11 >>Mark: So Jesus is our advocate and Jesus is our judge.
16:15 So if you had that in the court of law, if the judge
16:19 was the defense attorney for the one condemned,
16:24 that would be a conflict of interest, wouldn't it?
16:26 But here's the good news of the judgment.
16:29 The One who judges us is the One
16:31 who's doing everything He can to save us.
16:34 >>Eric: So we've got a beautiful picture here of Jesus, His role.
16:37 He's our, He's our judge, He's our advocate,
16:40 our defense attorney,
16:41 I heard someone else say He should also be our friend,
16:45 and if Jesus is your judge and your attorney and your friend,
16:48 there's really no reason for a sincere believer
16:52 to fear the judgment. >>Mark: Exactly.
16:54 >>Eric: But if you're not a sincere believer,
16:56 well, there may be some concern.
16:58 But by the grace of God, if you love Jesus
17:01 and you've turned your life over to Him,
17:03 then there's no reason to fear it whatsoever.
17:05 >>Mark: Exactly. You know, we have these wonderful passages
17:08 in the book of Hebrews.
17:09 I've outlined them here in the lesson.
17:12 For example, in Wednesday's lesson,
17:14 "The Good News of the Most Holy Place,"
17:16 let's take a look at two passages.
17:18 Hebrews, chapter 4, verse 14 to 16,
17:22 this is on Wednesday's lesson, Hebrews 4, verse 14 to 16,
17:27 and maybe you can read those.
17:29 >>Eric: "Seeing then that we have a great High Priest
17:32 "who has passed through the heavens,
17:33 "Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
17:38 "For we do not have a High Priest
17:39 "who cannot sympathize
17:41 "with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted
17:44 "as we are, yet without sin.
17:47 "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace,
17:51 "that we may obtain mercy and find grace
17:54 to help in time of need."
17:56 >>Mark: Christ died for us.
17:58 Christ ascended to heaven for us.
18:00 Christ is our High Priest in verse 14:
18:03 "Seeing then [because] we have a great High Priest,"
18:07 He's "passed into the heavens."
18:09 Let's "hold fast our confession."
18:11 We don't have a High Priest who can't "sympathize
18:13 with our weaknesses."
18:15 Notice it says He was tempted "in all points" like we are.
18:17 You know, sometimes people ask the question,
18:20 how could Jesus be tempted in all points like we are?
18:23 Jesus was not a woman who ever went through
18:26 the process of a divorce.
18:28 How could be a--how could He feel the grief, the sorrow,
18:30 the heartache of a woman whose husband has left her
18:33 for somebody else?
18:34 Jesus never had cancer,
18:37 didn't go through the agony of chemotherapy.
18:40 How can He ever help me with my discouragement
18:43 when I go through those kind of things?
18:44 Jesus was not a drug addict, you know;
18:47 how can He help a person going through drugs?
18:50 And the way I think one needs to see this is this
18:53 when it says He's tempted in all points like we are.
18:57 First, Jesus never went through a divorce,
19:02 but His closest friends left Him.
19:07 When He hung on the cross, He hung there alone.
19:09 Since Christ's capacity to love is greater
19:13 than any of our capacities to love,
19:16 when Judas betrayed Him, it caused greater pain
19:21 in Christ's heart than any betrayal
19:24 we could possibly imagine.
19:26 When all the disciples forsook Him, it caused greater pain.
19:30 So Christ knows the pain of betrayal.
19:34 You take the example of chemotherapy or physical pain.
19:39 When Jesus hung on Calvary's cross,
19:41 it was greater physical pain than you could possibly imagine.
19:44 So He knows physical pain.
19:46 But what about this drug business?
19:49 When Jesus was in the wilderness,
19:50 He fasted for 40 days. During that period of time,
19:55 the cravings that He had for food
19:57 were greater than the cravings of any drug addict,
20:02 any alcoholic,
20:03 any person that's trying to give up tobacco.
20:05 So the physical cravings that you may have,
20:09 the loneliness that you may experience,
20:12 the pain that you may experience.
20:14 Whatever it is, on that point, Jesus understands
20:19 because He took upon Himself human flesh,
20:22 and He experienced the degree of suffering,
20:27 the degree of pain, mental, physical, emotional,
20:31 that's greater than any mental, physical, emotional pain
20:34 that we could ever experience.
20:36 And notice what it says here, verse 16:
20:39 "Let us therefore come boldly"--
20:41 that's confidently-- "to the throne of grace,
20:43 that we may obtain mercy...find grace to help in time of need."
20:48 So here you have the appeal that we can come confidently. Why?
20:51 Because we serve a Jesus that understands us,
20:55 a Jesus that knows heartache, a Jesus that knows pain,
20:58 and a Jesus who's going to be there with us.
21:02 We find this also in Hebrews, chapter 10.
21:04 And, Pastor Eric, let's go to Hebrews 10.
21:07 We find that in our lesson as well.
21:09 And we'll take a look at verse 19 and onward.
21:12 >>Eric: "Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter
21:15 "the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,
21:17 "by a new and living way which He consecrated for us

21:23 "and having a High Priest over the house of God,
21:26 "let us draw near with a true heart
21:28 "in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled
21:32 "from an evil conscience and our bodies washed
21:34 "with pure water.
21:36 "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,
21:40 "for He who promised is faithful.
21:43 "And let us consider one another
21:44 "in order to stir up love and and good works,
21:48 "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together,
21:50 "as...the manner of some, but exhorting one another,
21:53 and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."
21:56 >>Mark: Notice a couple of things about this passage.
21:58 First, verse 19, "Having boldness"-- that's confidence--
22:03 "to enter into the Holiest by the blood of Jesus."
22:06 This was revolutionary for ancient Israel.
22:09 Only the high priest could enter the holiest
22:13 of the heavenly sanctuary-- of the earthly sanctuary,
22:16 only the high priest.
22:17 Here, this passage says through Jesus we can enter
22:21 into the most holy place.
22:24 And notice what it tells us in verse 22: "Let us draw near
22:28 with a true heart full of assurance."
22:31 Verse 23: "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope
22:35 without wavering, for He who promised is faithful."
22:38 The incredible good news of the sanctuary
22:40 is that we can draw near Jesus.
22:42 We can come right into the presence of God,
22:45 into the Shekinah glory of His presence
22:47 and allow His presence to fill our lives,
22:50 to transform us, to make us more in His image.
22:53 This is the good news of the sanctuary.
22:56 The door of the sanctuary is open, not shut.
23:00 And through the open door of the sanctuary, Christ beckons you,
23:05 and He beckons me to enter in to the most holy place experience,
23:09 where we draw near to Him, where He--
23:12 our heart beats with His heart; our mind beats with His mind.
23:16 We are one with Him.
23:18 That's the incredible good news of the sanctuary.
23:21 >>Eric: So now we see Jesus in the sanctuary more clearly.
23:25 As we face the judgment, we need to have hope.
23:28 Why do we or where can we--how do we see that hope in Jesus?
23:32 Why is it necessary for Him to be there, for us to have hope?
23:38 >>Mark: Because without Jesus, we stand before a holy God
23:43 condemned by the law that we have broken.
23:48 In Jesus, we stand before a holy God condemned by the law
23:53 that we've broken, but we stand in Christ's righteousness,
23:58 in Christ's perfection, in Christ's goodness.
24:01 And because we stand there that way in Christ,
24:06 the Father accepts us
24:09 as He would accept His own Son Jesus.
24:11 But it even gets better than that--
24:13 if it could get better than that.
24:15 Not only by faith right now do we stand
24:19 in the most holy place, accepted in the beloved by Christ,
24:24 but we stand in the most holy place
24:26 transformed by the grace of God.
24:29 We come to Jesus just as we are.
24:33 But we come, and He changes us, and we don't stay as we are.
24:37 I love what it says in 1 John 3:
24:41 "Beloved, now are we the sons of God,
24:44 "[yet] it doth not yet appear what we shall be:
24:47 "[because] we know...when He [doth] appear,
24:49 we shall be like Him"-- transformed by His grace.
24:53 >>Eric: So a beautiful picture of Jesus and His role
24:57 in the sanctuary, giving us hope.
25:00 In the couple of minutes that we have left, Pastor Mark,
25:03 if somebody is grappling with this and still lacks faith
25:10 that they are in--
25:12 that they can be in a saving relationship with Jesus,
25:14 maybe they're looking at themselves
25:16 and seeing how far from Jesus' character they are.
25:20 What words of encouragement would you give them to help them
25:23 to understand what God is doing
25:25 through the sanctuary and through Christ,
25:27 that they might have that gift of salvation?
25:30 >>Mark: You know, in Hebrews, chapter 7 and verse 25,
25:35 I think, Pastor Eric, the Bible answers that question.
25:40 Hebrews 7, verse 25, "Therefore, He is able."
25:45 Wherever you are today, God is able.
25:48 Whatever rung of the spiritual ladder you are on
25:53 on this journey to heaven,
25:55 wherever you are on this mountain path
25:57 on the way to heaven, Jesus is able.
26:01 Whatever your past failures are, whatever the mistakes
26:03 you've made are, whatever the sins you've committed,
26:06 He is able--to do what?--
26:08 "to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him,
26:13 since He [ever] lives to make intercession for them."
26:17 Jesus is able. Jesus is capable.
26:22 Jesus saves from the gutter-most to the uttermost.
26:28 Jesus Christ has the power.
26:31 As we come to Him to transform our lives, to forgive our past,
26:38 to free us from guilt, and to give us the grace,
26:44 the strength to live a new life in Jesus.
26:47 He is "able to save to the uttermost."
26:52 What I would say to you is this: Believe that promise.
26:55 Say to yourself: Jesus can save even me.
26:59 Jesus can save even me.
27:03 And you will find the peace that passes all understanding.
27:07 >>Eric: Thank you, Pastor Mark.
27:09 And we hope that you have found that peace
27:12 that passes all understanding.
27:13 And if you haven't yet, now you know how you can do it.
27:17 We are continuing this incredible journey
27:19 through the theme of "The Great Controversy"
27:21 as we study week by week and lesson by lesson.
27:25 And hopefully, by the grace of God, you are being encouraged
27:28 and emboldened on your walk with Him.
27:32 We look forward to seeing you again with us next week
27:35 as we continue our journey through "The Great Controversy."
27:37 Until then, may God bless you.
