00:23 I'm Natalie Wood. 00:24 And today we have 00:25 a very special surprise for you. 00:27 Jesus for Asia is working in many countries in Asia. 00:31 India, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. 00:35 And today we welcome guests from Indonesia. 00:38 This is the first show we've even done about Indonesia 00:40 and it's very special that our guests 00:42 have come all the way form Jakarta to join us. 00:45 I would like to introduce you to Ramon and Shandy Tengkano. 00:49 Welcome to the show. 00:50 Thank you. Thank you. 00:51 It's so great to have you here. 00:52 And I know that you have quite a story 00:54 of what the Lord has been doing in your lives. 00:56 Yes. Yes. God is good. 00:59 We would like to start out by asking you, 01:01 where is Indonesia? 01:03 Indonesia is in the Southeast Asia. 01:06 And it's the largest archipelago in the world. 01:10 We have 17,000 something island. 01:12 Wow. 01:15 It's a lot of work there. Okay. 01:17 So what exactly are you doing there? 01:20 We have a television ministry. 01:23 We broadcast via satellite. 01:25 So our satellite footprints across Indonesia 01:29 from east to west 01:31 which is just about as wide as America continent, 01:36 Los Angeles to New York. 01:37 Okay. 01:38 But it's a 60% waters or 17,000 islands 01:42 around the area. 01:43 Okay. 01:44 We've been broadcasting since January... 01:47 Oh sorry, March 2011. 01:50 So that's what we do. 01:51 Okay. 01:52 Have you always been involved in God's work, 01:54 or it's just something that you grew up doing. 01:58 What's your story? 01:59 Well, I was born in the church. 02:02 I grew up in the church, 02:03 educated in the church school system, 02:06 but never really got interested in mission work. 02:10 My body was in the church, never left it. 02:13 Well, I left it a lot many times 02:15 but my heart is out there in the world 02:18 till I came back again to the Lord. 02:20 And about 2008, my wife on the other hand... 02:25 Came back to the Lord at 2011? Yeah. Yeah. 02:30 But she wasn't born in the church. 02:34 And our lives were... 02:38 I would say, it was a mess. 02:40 You know, we were searching for the world. 02:46 We just don't know the direction. 02:47 We had no direction. 02:49 And we were just making money, and we were having fun, 02:50 you know, drinking, partying, drugs, 02:55 everything that the world was doing, we were doing it. 02:58 And we had no sense of a calling. 03:02 Yes, our body was in the church. 03:04 I was honestly, in fact... 03:06 I don't like saying this 03:07 but I was an elder in the church. 03:09 But my spiritual life 03:10 was actually the lowest at the time. 03:13 I had no idea what I was doing. 03:16 Going to church, I would equate church activities to salvation. 03:20 So I was happy where I was. 03:23 And, you know, when it was good... 03:24 So because you were active in the church, 03:26 you were going to be saved. 03:27 Yes, that's what we thought. 03:31 I had no... 03:33 Even though I lived in Indonesia, 03:35 I had no idea what mission work was like. 03:40 And so your search was not for God, 03:42 your search was for the world, the things of the world. 03:46 That's right. 03:47 Because, you know, I remember everybody 03:50 at the church they said that, 03:52 you know, that we are a blessed family 03:55 because you have everything. 03:57 And then especially he's the elder. 03:59 And then they thought that... 04:01 You're good. You're good. 04:03 You know, you're just waiting for the Lord to come in 04:07 and you just wait there in, 04:09 but at the moment both of us not feeling happy 04:13 because, you know, 04:14 my husband being active at the church 04:16 and then I'm not active at the church 04:19 because I don't like situation inside the church 04:22 because those people over there like, 04:25 you know, is very unlikable maybe I say, right. 04:29 And so that's why I don't want to be active at a church 04:32 even though I'm the wife of the, 04:33 you know, the leader or the elder. 04:36 But I'm the one who always don't want to get involved 04:39 with the activity. 04:40 So that's why because I know that, 04:43 you know, I have a feeling 04:45 that this is not supposed to be like, okay, 04:48 at the same time we active in the world, 04:50 at the same time we're active in the church. 04:52 And then this is not supposed to be that. 04:55 I don't know, I just feel this is not right. 04:56 That there's something else. 04:58 There's something else, you know. 04:59 There was a feeling that always was stuck in our mind, 05:03 in our ears. 05:04 There's got to be something beyond just going to church. 05:07 And every time we'd go to church, 05:09 I myself going to church 05:11 is like I'm just like a clock in and the clock out 05:14 kind of thing, you know. 05:16 Okay, but the whole couple hours, 05:18 you know, in the church were just boring... 05:23 Yeah, when it's going to be done? 05:25 Can I walk back out again? 05:26 Yeah, can we get on with our lives, yeah. 05:28 So when you talk about having money 05:30 and you talk about 05:31 going wherever you want to not having to think 05:33 before you buy. 05:34 I think we might need to explain to the viewers 05:38 where you came from. 05:39 I mean, what do you mean by that we had money 05:42 'cause, you know, some of us to have money is to have, 05:47 you know, 40,000 a year salary and then be able to survive. 05:51 But what do you mean by that? 05:52 Well, I... 05:55 People say I was lucky 05:56 but in many ways I was not lucky, 05:59 you know, with money because when you have money 06:03 and your heart is not with the Lord, 06:04 you know, all this money, 06:06 blessing actually becomes curse. 06:08 Yeah. 06:09 What I mean by that is I graduate from college. 06:11 I always felt like I had to prove myself, you know. 06:18 I remember one time that, you know, 06:20 one of my friends I grew up with, 06:24 he challenged me, 06:25 let's go race for the first million dollar. 06:29 This is fresh off college, you know, we were lucky, 06:32 we could get a job. 06:33 I told him, I'm lucky if I can land a job, 06:36 you know, you want to race me for a million dollar, 06:38 but somehow that thing was in the back of my mind 06:43 always wanting a proof, you know. 06:46 That's the thing with us many times 06:47 that we like to show off to the people 06:51 we don't like, you know. 06:53 So there I was and, you know, I became aggressive in money. 06:58 And then I think by 28 07:02 I actually won the race, you know. 07:04 We've been raised maybe, 07:06 you know, with the parents that always teach us 07:08 that money is the key to get the happiness. 07:12 So yeah, we really find, we really want the money 07:17 because we want to get the happiness. 07:19 And then people around us, 07:21 even the family always said like, 07:23 if you go through that level, 07:25 you will get the happiness over there. 07:28 So we just catch the level. 07:30 And then when we were there, there's emptiness. 07:35 It's just only emptiness... 07:36 The happiness wasn't there. 07:37 Yes, the happiness wasn't there. 07:39 And people kept saying that like, 07:40 "Okay, better for you to go to that level again." 07:44 And we just like catching that again. 07:45 And we're there, higher and higher. 07:49 I don't know, I believe the more higher you are, 07:51 the more you find the emptiness over there. 07:55 And especially, you know, 07:56 like I told my husband through that, you know. 08:01 People choose us to become the leader in the church 08:05 not because our spirituality, 08:08 just because they see the money in us, right. 08:11 And that's not a good example though because, you know, 08:14 all the members they will look at us like see the money, 08:18 you know. 08:20 So they want to get the money too. 08:22 This is what we have to be to be a good church member 08:24 we have to have money too. 08:26 Yes. 08:28 We're setting the wrong example. 08:29 And that's not good example, right? 08:31 How was your marriage during this time? 08:33 This time, yeah... 08:34 Yeah, well, those times really, really bad. 08:38 Regardless of the fact that we pray for partner, you know. 08:42 She was the answer to my prayer. 08:43 Yeah. 08:44 I was the answer to her prayer. 08:46 You know, we were unlikely people 08:48 who prayed before, you know. 08:51 But God did answer our prayer miraculously. 08:53 But, you know, we knew the answer. 08:57 But somehow we didn't live up to it. 09:00 So I was just thinking, God was making a mistake here, 09:03 you know. 09:04 She had her own money, I got my own money. 09:06 And, you know, money distracts us 09:09 from achieving the marriage we were intended to have. 09:13 So we were just finding our own, I was at least. 09:20 I was not a good husband. 09:21 And marriage was bad. 09:24 There's no communication. 09:25 Yes, there is communication 09:27 if we went out to drink and party, 09:29 then we could talk, have fun, giggle, laugh. 09:32 But it was at the surface level. 09:34 Yeah, we woke up in the morning, 09:36 and then got sober and that's it. 09:38 And then especially... 09:39 Our separate ways. Argue over, whatever. 09:41 Yeah, you do your own thing, I do my own thing. 09:44 You know, thank you but... 09:46 If I'm not taking pills, you know, like... 09:48 Sedative. 09:49 Yeah, I cannot talk like this, you know. 09:52 I was just like, but I need to take, 09:55 you know, pills or alcohol so I can like up and around... 10:00 Yeah, to function. To function. 10:02 I cannot talk to my children too. 10:05 I cannot talk to him too, you know. 10:07 And then my children I cannot stand with them. 10:11 You know, my children they have nanny of course, 10:13 and then I have my assistant. 10:15 And then every time my children came, 10:18 you know, of course they want to be close to, 10:21 you know, to mommy and daddy. 10:24 But when I saw them from far away, 10:27 they come to me, I was like, "No, I just like no, no, no." 10:31 I will call my assistant. I will call their assistant. 10:34 I'm just like give them, 10:36 this is the money, tell them to go, okay. 10:39 To watch movie, anything. 10:40 To watch anything and then even though we go for vacation, 10:43 I have to split the room to my children. 10:45 You know, like I don't want to be with them 10:48 because they are too noisy. 10:49 They are because, you know... 10:52 Children are active. Yeah. 10:54 I don't want to be with them even though... 10:56 You didn't like it. 10:57 She wasn't fit for to become a mom. 10:59 Yeah. 11:00 Even though we go around, you know, 11:02 we go for vacation with the cars. 11:05 We have to split the car. 11:06 I have to go with my own car with him, with our driver. 11:11 And my children have to go with their own car 11:13 with their driver, with their nanny, 11:15 with their assistant, anything, you know. 11:18 And I'm very not function well as a wife. 11:23 She know how to cook, didn't know to manage. 11:25 And as a mother, you know, I'm not function well. 11:29 And God, you know, fix everything. 11:32 Now, of course, I'm not using drugs anymore, 11:37 alcohol, everything. 11:39 But yeah, now I can talk to the people. 11:42 I can function well. 11:44 And then I can be a wife. 11:46 And I can even take care of my children, teach them. 11:50 And I was like amaze how God can give us the knowledge as, 11:54 you know, become a mother. 11:56 And then yeah, I was like amazing how, 11:59 you know, now my children then gave me the courage 12:02 to walk with the Lord because they said... 12:04 She wakes up in the morning. That's the good thing. 12:05 Yeah, that is the big thing. 12:07 In the morning not the afternoon. 12:09 That is the big thing 12:10 because even I took up the sleeping pill, 12:13 I cannot sleep. 12:14 I cannot sleep. 12:16 But now I sit and I sleep right away. 12:21 Yeah, God is good. 12:22 So how did God start to turn this around for you? 12:26 Well, actually I started first. Yeah. 12:28 Let's say 2008. 12:29 Somewhere in the mid 2008, I... 12:33 Well, I was at the peak of my financial I guess, 12:36 you know, that. 12:38 I looked around with all the confidence, you know. 12:43 And the light you see... 12:45 Yeah, and then I had my birthday, 12:48 and then I went to treat myself. 12:52 Got me a $200,000 car, paid cash, 12:56 started driving with it around and, 12:59 I thought I was going to be happy, feel cool. 13:03 And then five days after that 13:05 like there is no happiness, you know. 13:06 Why I waste so much money? 13:07 You know, I could use that cash... 13:08 Excitement wasn't where. 13:11 I remember at the red light, you know, stop light. 13:15 I stop at the red light, there's some ugly car, 13:20 you know, an old car. 13:21 And then this is family, so happy. 13:24 I was expecting them to look at me and my car, 13:27 maybe expecting to see their jealous face, you know. 13:30 But they didn't bother looking at the car, you know. 13:33 So they're just playing inside the car, 13:35 happy, you know, parents and children only. 13:38 I certainly don't have that kind of family. 13:46 I made a promise that, 13:47 you know, I got to fix my family here. 13:50 And the money is not fixing anything. 13:53 The more you give the money to your wife, 13:55 the more you give the money to your children, 13:58 they become worse. 13:59 And then I remember that week I, we prayed, 14:05 I asked my wife to pray, she didn't bother. 14:09 But I prayed from my heart, I said, 14:11 "Lord, that if You want me to live 14:17 as a worldly person. 14:20 If all You ever designed for me is the life of a worldly, 14:25 you know, individual, just party, 14:27 having fun, making money. 14:29 Yeah, all these things, just leave me alone, you know." 14:33 I know the Holy Spirit works in each one of us, 14:36 even in bad people. 14:38 So it was always whispering to me. 14:40 Every time I was having fun and just, you know, 14:43 I got reminded this is not the life. 14:47 But, Lord, if this is the life that You want me to live, 14:49 just leave me alone, 14:50 take this Holy Spirit away, you know. 14:53 But, you know, otherwise 14:56 if your life is the life that You designed for me 15:02 is something completely different, 15:03 it's all for You. 15:05 And all the money is for Your cause. 15:08 And all the words that come out of my mouth 15:10 is only to praise You. 15:11 All the thoughts that I have in my mind is only about You. 15:14 If that's the life You want me to live, 15:17 which is completely opposite from that, from my life. 15:22 Teach me how to hate this life 15:24 because I don't know how to hate it, you know. 15:27 Take it away slowly. 15:29 And at any cost if you were to start, 15:31 if there is a refresh button, 15:33 you know, like a start button, restart. 15:36 Show me where it is, I want to press it. 15:39 And if you were to send me under the bridge, 15:40 to live under the bridge You want to take away my kids, 15:43 my wife, my money, everything, I'm ready. 15:49 If really, you know, but You promise me there is happiness. 15:54 And, yeah, and God started to teach me spiritually 15:58 because God really did open my eyes to see 16:01 that the people around me 16:02 are not really, really friends, you know. 16:06 And the life we are living is not really the life, 16:10 you know, all this material possession 16:12 and the business to conduct all these things 16:16 were just fake. 16:19 I said, "Lord, if You want me to be out of here, 16:23 You show me the way. 16:24 I don't know how." 16:26 And in two years, I was just following. 16:28 I went back to the books, to the writings, 16:31 reading the Bible, to the writings of prophecies, 16:33 Spirit of Prophecy. 16:35 All I did was just that, 16:36 I had really had no interest in business anymore. 16:39 All of a sudden I woke up, 16:40 I just don't take my calls from my company, my... 16:46 I was like absent for one year. 16:47 I shut up my phone. 16:48 I shut down my Facebook, my contacts. 16:51 I was just swallowed by the earth. 16:53 I moved houses. 16:56 I told my staff, I told, look, 16:59 there's certain small group of people I trust them. 17:01 Don't tell them where I live now. 17:04 I just want to get out of here, you know. 17:07 And then for two years I shut down my telephone, 17:10 nobody could search me. 17:12 Internet wasn't really that big as big as it is now. 17:15 So I just, I moved, refreshed my life. 17:20 And then we got a property up in the mountain. 17:24 You know, I know I believed in country living. 17:25 And, you know, God is giving us a mission work. 17:28 And so we bought a land up in the mountain, 17:32 we started having different life. 17:35 So you had this prayer with the Lord. 17:37 And you gave your husband and your children to Him. 17:40 Did He then take them from you? No. No. 17:43 And leave you alone to live your comfortable life? 17:44 No. He is there. 17:48 He's not making move at all. 17:50 And I was so mad at the moment. 17:54 I'm screaming like just leave me alone, please. 17:58 I said like I'm crying, I'm getting crazy. 18:03 But he never leaved me. 18:04 And then, you know... 18:07 Desire. He even give me the desire. 18:10 When He give me the desire, I look at His example. 18:14 So it's click. 18:16 When He gave me the desire. So God gave you desire. 18:17 I know. 18:18 And then, you know, the picture is like this. 18:22 We as a human want to know what God can do. 18:27 So God send us Jesus, 18:29 become human so we can know, right. 18:33 So that is the, you know, my experience is like that 18:36 when God gives me the desire, I look at His example, 18:42 and I was like, "Oh, like that." 18:45 And then I'm learning, you know, baby slap learning. 18:51 And then once I'm asking him like 18:54 "Ramon, we learn everything, 18:56 I even can wake up in the morning, 18:59 because the desire to read the Bible, 19:02 to read the Spirit of Prophecy. 19:03 I don't know where the desire is." 19:06 You know, I remember 4:30 in the morning I can wake up. 19:10 And I was like, I want to read the Bible, 19:11 the Spirit of Prophecy, the Bible. 19:14 And I remember the first book that I read is about 19:16 the Spirit is "Steps to Christ", 19:19 because the love is there. 19:21 I was like, "Wow, this is amazing." 19:23 So start from that book, 19:25 I falling in love with Spirit of Prophecy and the Bible. 19:28 I cannot live without them, you know. 19:30 I read it, read it. 19:31 And then once I'm asking him like 19:34 "Okay, you're the priest in the family, 19:36 you have to tell me where to go, so I can... 19:43 What do we do now? I know, what do we do? 19:44 And then I know how to teach the children too. 19:47 And then he starts saying, 19:48 I love the plan that something that we even don't know 19:54 how to start at the moment, right. 19:56 We say like maybe we gonna live, 19:58 you know, poor. 19:59 We're going to start. 20:00 I said, "We're going to start working for the Lord. 20:02 I don't know what it is," you know. 20:04 The way you dress also he said. 20:06 All our career, our minds, and our thoughts, 20:08 and the words that come out of our mouth 20:10 will be about God's grace. 20:16 I don't know where, I don't know how, 20:17 but I know that's the direction. 20:19 Even the house or the properties 20:23 we're not going to enjoy them anymore, you know. 20:26 I know God wants us to go outside where the needs are. 20:30 So we went out to the mountain, left most of the villagers. 20:33 But before that 20:35 we went to the faith camp. 20:40 Yeah, no, no, no. 20:45 Before that was actually that, I told her, 20:47 "Look even the way you, 20:49 the way you looks gonna have to change, 20:51 you know all these things attached to you 20:54 they're going to go. 20:55 I don't know how but God is going to make you 21:00 look different even." 21:02 And then the words... 21:03 Your food is going to be different. 21:04 Our diet is going to be different. 21:05 You know, everything come from Him. 21:07 And he said like, 21:08 "Shandy, if you want to become my partner, 21:10 and you surrender everything, and you're ready. 21:13 And then, you know, you just find 21:16 all of the answer through Bible and Spirit of Prophecy 21:18 because I cannot give it to you. 21:20 But I promise you one thing." 21:21 He said, "I promise you one thing, 21:23 you and me with the children, we can go to heaven together." 21:28 And that is the calling, I was like, 21:29 "Yes, I'm really, really ready at the moment." 21:32 I said to him, "Everywhere you go, 21:36 you know, you want to bring me 21:37 to the lowest part in this world, 21:41 I'm ready, you know." 21:43 'Cause and then faith camp invited, 21:45 you know, invitation came. 21:48 I remember his mom... 21:50 2011 January. 21:51 His mom telling us, "Hey, Shandy, there is a event..." 21:55 Some American guy is speaking. 21:56 Some American guy is speaking about the mission. 22:00 And I was like what is so special. 22:02 "I've heard many American guys, you know." 22:05 I said like, "What is mission?" 22:07 "Mission, you know, the story about people 22:09 working in the jungle, 22:11 you know, and then how God can help them and everything." 22:15 And I was so "Oh, okay," that is new for me 22:18 because I don't know, yeah, I don't know me. 22:21 I never get the story about mission inside my church. 22:26 So that is a new thing for me. 22:28 And I was like, I'm so excited, not too excited 22:33 because I remembered Ramon said like, "Let's go." 22:36 But at the moment I just, I don't want to go to 22:38 because that is people in the church, 22:40 I don't like people. 22:41 You know, I don't like people in the church at the moment. 22:43 I was like, "No, I'm not going to go there." 22:46 Somehow the church was not the answer, and we knew it. 22:49 No, nothing going on in the church on Sunday. 22:51 But I have a courage to go there. 22:56 Okay, I want to go there. 22:57 And then I sit there with full of my makeup, 23:00 you know, with my handbag. 23:04 How much my handbag cost? 23:05 It's all the expensive collection of bag. 23:08 Like how much that? 23:09 Twenty thousand, thirty thousand dollars handbag. 23:11 Thirty thousand handbag with all of my diamonds. 23:15 You know, everything the accessories on me 23:17 because I don't know, 23:18 I just walk and sit in the front, 23:22 hearing all of the testimonies, and I started to cry. 23:27 And I started to say to my life, "This is it. 23:30 This is the things that I'm looking in, 23:34 you know, the rest of my life." 23:35 I'm crying. 23:36 And then all of my makeup like it's hard, 23:38 you know, like the mascara over there. 23:42 I'm crying and then I said like, 23:44 "Lord, why are those people has that story and I'm not. 23:49 I want to claim that story to me. 23:52 I want to claim that story, become my story. 23:55 And I want that life." 23:57 Yeah, I think that picture there... 24:00 That's the first day... 24:02 That was the first Sabbath, 24:04 the morning after she was crying, 24:06 she decide to just, "Okay, maybe I got to drop, 24:09 I got to dress differently." 24:11 So that's the Sabbath where she came first... 24:13 I remember he said that, 24:18 "I don't know why, 24:20 I don't know how to start 24:21 but maybe God will teach you how to dress and everything." 24:27 And then I remember that night the speaker said like, 24:32 "God says one person in this place 24:36 she really needs to change how the way she dresses up." 24:39 And I was like, "Wow, that is me. 24:43 I need to change." 24:44 And I just go in front, pray, crying, pray, crying 24:48 and that's it. 24:49 And after we went home and I said to him, "Ramon..." 24:55 I never asked him which dress that I have to wear in. 25:00 That is the first day I asked, 25:02 "What do you think I should wear?" 25:04 I asked and I picked it out for her that white blouse, 25:08 that black skirt, and that's it. 25:11 Every Sabbath, every church function 25:13 this is what you wear. 25:14 You got to go in a detox, fashion detox, you know. 25:18 So that's, you know, the picture was Jon 25:19 in the middle. 25:20 And that attire she was wearing for the whole year, 25:24 every Sabbath, every church meeting. 25:29 So people would say they never see Shandy 25:32 in anything else but that. 25:34 Yeah, this is the picture like God's makeover. 25:37 You know, this is me before. 25:40 I don't know how to do, 25:42 you know, to put off all of my accessories. 25:47 But, yeah, God teach me all the way, you know. 25:51 He also did great makeover, I guess. 25:55 Yeah. 25:58 So what you found is that you didn't find happiness 26:02 in having lot of money. 26:04 And the more money you had, the less happiness you found? 26:07 Yes. I was happy. 26:10 When you define happiness 26:11 there's two ways of defining happiness 26:13 is your flesh happy or is your spirit happy. 26:17 Happiness by what definition. 26:19 Well, when you have a lot of money 26:21 your spirit is not happy, your flesh is happy. 26:23 Well, definitely. 26:25 But, you know, we're born in the spirit not in the flesh. 26:28 What I was born with the flesh is flesh, 26:29 what I was born with a spirit is spirit. 26:31 So God was bringing you to make major changes in your life, 26:35 and your lives together as a family. 26:38 And you had found a new concept, a new way. 26:44 And that was the idea 26:45 that serving others would bring happiness. 26:48 And your experience being that, the more money you had, 26:52 the more emptiness was there. 26:54 That's just so powerful 26:55 because so many of the countries in this world, 26:57 our country here, 26:58 so many people are searching for the material answer 27:02 to that hope in our lives. 27:04 And I know we'll talk in the next show 27:07 about the joy that you're finding in service and so... 27:11 More exciting part. Yeah. 27:13 The motto that we have now this, 27:17 happiness is the product of selflessness. 27:20 So that is that happiness... 27:23 The product of selflessness. 27:25 Yeah. Wow.
