This... 02:30 Can you tell us something about it? 02:32 Yes, the special Bible Gem. 02:33 The story we're gonna be learning about today, 02:35 boys and girls, is gonna be Elijah 02:38 and the Prophets of Baal. 02:40 Whoa! 02:41 So where the story picks up is that Elijah 02:45 was a prophet to the nation of Israel. 02:48 And there was a certain king ruling during Elijah's time, 02:52 who knows the king? 02:53 He's one of the worst kings in all of Israel's history. 02:56 Let's see. 02:57 Leah, can you know what king it was? 02:59 That's exactly right, King Ahab. 03:02 Who knows who Ahab married? 03:04 Let's see. 03:05 Yeah, right here. 03:07 Jezebel. Jezebel. 03:09 Well, do you know any friends named Jezebel? 03:12 No. 03:13 No, because she was a villain in the Bible 03:15 and so was King Ahab. 03:16 Ahab and Jezebel together, 03:18 they turned all of Israel against the worship 03:22 of the true God, Yahweh. 03:25 And they turn them to worship false gods 03:27 like Baal, and Asherah, 03:30 and all of these false idols and gods. 03:33 And God called Elijah to go before King Ahab 03:37 and speak boldly to him, and say that 03:40 because of the apostasy of Israel 03:42 and because of all the false worship 03:45 that God will bring a drought, 03:47 a famine upon the land for three and a half years. 03:52 Do you think King Ahab was happy about that? 03:55 No. No. 03:56 That took a lot of courage for Elijah. 03:58 He came in there and he made that decree. 04:01 And then Ahab said, 04:02 "Well, ah, let's go and kill him." 04:04 But God preserved Elijah, 04:06 and he ran into the wilderness where he was protected. 04:09 And while he was there, 04:11 he did a few different miracles. 04:12 He brought someone back to life. 04:14 And there was a widow there 04:16 that they multiplied the oil and made bread, amazing things, 04:20 but where our story is headed, boys and girls, 04:22 is that after three and a half years, 04:25 God told Elijah to go back to King Ahab. 04:29 And he went back to King Ahab, and he said, 04:31 "King Ahab, I have returned. 04:36 And I want you to call all of Israel together 04:40 on a certain mountain." 04:42 Who knows what mount he told them to come to? 04:45 Yeah. 04:47 Mount Carmel. 04:48 That's exactly right. 04:50 He said, "Let's bring them all to Mount Carmel." 04:52 Now Carmel was there in Israel, in Palestine. 04:55 It was a tall mountain where everyone could see 04:58 to the top of it. 05:00 This was a great gathering spot. 05:01 So Ahab agreed, 05:04 and he brought all of Israel there, 05:06 but Ahab also brought some priests, 05:10 some prophets, some priests of Baal 05:14 and some prophets of Asherah. 05:17 And so there was 450 prophets of Baal 05:21 and 400 prophets of Asherah, 05:23 and so there was 850 false prophets that were there. 05:27 Whoa! 05:29 Elijah was the only true prophet of God there. 05:31 Was Elijah outnumbered 1 to 850, huh? 05:35 Way outnumbered. 05:36 And so there they came, 05:38 and Elijah stood up and he said, "Okay." 05:41 Speaking to the children of Israel, 05:43 he said, "How long? 05:45 How long will you falter? 05:47 How long will you wave between two opinions? 05:50 You guys, if Yahweh, 05:53 the Lord God is the true God, well, then serve him. 05:56 But if Baal is God, then serve him. 05:59 You guys seem to be on the fence and going well, 06:02 whatever is most convenient." 06:03 He called them to make a decision 06:05 that very day, come on decide. 06:08 What did the people say? 06:10 Nothing. 06:12 They were dead silent. 06:13 No one was courageous enough to say, 06:15 I'm a worshipper of the true God, 06:17 all of them just dead silent. 06:21 Then Elijah, well, the prophets of Baal 06:24 seem to be mocking at that point. 06:26 But Elijah came and he made a proposal, 06:29 he made a suggestion. 06:31 He had an idea and he said, 06:32 "Guys, how about in order to decide 06:35 who the true God is? 06:37 The prophets of Baal, 06:39 you can build an altar to your God, 06:42 and I will build an altar to Yahweh, 06:45 to the one and true God of Israel. 06:47 And whichever God rains fire down 06:50 and has the altar and the offering 06:52 and the sacrifice burn up with fire, 06:55 that will be the true God." 06:58 So King Ahab and the other prophets of Baal, 07:02 they agreed. 07:03 And they said, "Okay, well, we'll do that." 07:05 So the prophets of Baal got up, 07:08 and they went over and they began to make their... 07:11 They made their altar, 07:13 and they began to walk around it. 07:19 And they were worshiping and they were dancing, 07:23 and they were really doing all things, 07:26 all kinds of things with their body. 07:29 And hours went by, 07:31 hour after hour after hour 07:33 until finally about noon, 07:35 Elijah step forward, and he said, 07:37 "Hey, prophets, maybe Baal, 07:40 maybe your god is taking a nap. 07:43 Maybe he's sleeping 07:45 because he's not hearing you. 07:47 Maybe he's out walking his dog. 07:50 Whatever he's doing, he's not listening to you. 07:53 But go ahead, keep going. 07:55 Maybe if you try harder." 08:01 And they kept going 08:03 until they began to get tired. 08:08 And the evening approached and still no fire, 08:12 no fire at all. 08:13 Finally said, "Okay, fine. 08:15 We give up." 08:17 And they took a rest, a well needed rest, 08:19 and their altar remained dry with no fire coming down. 08:24 Then Elijah step forward, 08:26 and he began to rebuild the torn down altar 08:31 to the true God of Israel. 08:33 And he chose to pick out. 08:36 Who knows how many stones? 08:37 About 12. Twelve stones. That's right. 08:40 Those 12 stones to represent the 12 tribes of Israel. 08:44 And so he began to get these stones. 08:45 Can I have a few of you come up and help me? 08:48 And he built the altar. 08:51 He put the stones down. 08:53 I will keep that one for later. 08:57 Yeah, he made it just in the proper arrangement. 09:03 Right. 09:05 Good. 09:09 Once it was put all nice together, 09:11 he then got... 09:13 Thank you guys so much. 09:14 He then got the wood 09:17 and he brought it and he put it right on top. 09:24 Boys and girls, when he was done 09:26 building the altar, was that it? 09:29 Was there anything else that he did? 09:30 Who knows what he did? 09:32 Let's see. 09:34 Water pouring. 09:36 That's exactly right. 09:37 He poured water all over it. 09:39 Can I have four boys and girls 09:41 come and help me? 09:43 We've got some water pots over here. 09:46 And so he called some people, some servants to help him. 09:49 And they filled up the water pots 09:51 and they came, 09:52 and they poured water all over it, 09:55 all over it. 09:57 But not just once they went back 09:59 and they refilled their pots. 10:01 He said, "We need more water, we need more water." 10:05 And the second time they came back 10:07 and they poured water all over it. 10:10 Oh, yeah, so much water. 10:12 And then he said, "Oh, that's not enough. 10:14 A third time, a third time get more water." 10:16 And then they came back. 10:18 Oh! That's a lot of water, huh? 10:21 Some of the Israelites looked and said, 10:22 "Well, I can take a swim in that." 10:24 So much water they came. 10:26 And that was it just four times of water. 10:28 And there was a moat. 10:30 There was a trench all around it 10:31 and it was just soaked with water. 10:34 And there was trench 10:36 that was dug apart full of water. 10:38 Now trying to start a fire is it a good idea? 10:42 If you want to start a fire to put water 10:44 all over the thing you want to burn up? 10:46 No! No. 10:49 Well, you'll see, prophets of Baal. 10:52 He poured over it to make a point 10:54 because Elijah believed that his God 10:57 could do the seemingly impossible. 11:00 So Elijah, after all the preparations 11:02 had been made, 11:04 he came and in stark contrast 11:06 to the prophets of Baal, 11:08 dancing around and trying to do 11:10 all this fancy filled stuff to call their God. 11:13 Elijah was calm. 11:15 He was collected, and he knelt down. 11:21 He knelt down and prayed, 11:24 "O Lord God, of Abraham, 11:27 Isaac and Israel. 11:30 Let it be known this day, 11:32 that You are the God of Israel, 11:35 and that I am your servant, 11:37 and that I have done all of this today 11:39 because You have asked me to follow Your word. 11:43 Hear me, O Lord, hear me 11:46 that this people may know that You are the one true Lord, 11:52 and that You may turn their hearts back 11:55 to You again." 11:58 And after Elijah was done praying 12:00 that simple prayer. 12:02 All of a sudden, fire came down from heaven, 12:06 and filled the altar, 12:09 and all of the Israelites were astonished. 12:12 And they were dismayed and they all cried out and say, 12:14 "Whoa, Yahweh, the Lord God, He is God." 12:20 And they took those prophets of Baal, 12:22 and they no longer used them in their worship anymore. 12:27 Then there's one thing left to do with this story. 12:31 Elijah went to the very top of Mount Carmel 12:34 and he began to pray 12:37 and ask God to restore the water, 12:39 the rain back to the land. 12:41 And he prayed, 12:43 and he got his servant and he said, 12:44 "Look, is there any rain yet?" 12:46 He said, "No, not yet." 12:48 And so he prayed seven times he did this, 12:50 and finally after the seventh time, 12:53 lo and behold, out in the distance, 12:56 a cloud began to come, 12:58 and eventually the whole sky was filled with clouds 13:01 and it began to pour rain 13:04 because the people had turned their hearts 13:07 back to God. 13:08 Do you, boys and girls, 13:09 want to turn your heart to God 13:11 and worship the true God of Israel? 13:12 Yes! Yes. 13:14 That's amazing. 13:16 What a wonderful story! 13:18 Our God is faithful and He will come through for us 13:23 if we stand for Him. 13:25 Well, remember, boys and girls, 13:27 to look in your Bibles to find special Bible Gems. 13:31 Until next time, goodbye. 13:34 Bye! Bye! |
