My name is Yvonne Lewis. 00:23 There's a dynamic program in store just for you. 00:26 And I'm excited because today 00:28 we're gonna hear from two artists 00:30 who are passionate about using their gifts. 00:32 Not to glorify self but to honor 00:35 and glorify the gift giver. 00:37 So stay tuned as we lift up the name 00:39 of Jesus, our Savior and Lord. 00:41 Come magnify the Lord with me 00:43 and let us exalt His name together. 00:46 Magnify the Lord with me 00:49 Magnify Him 00:54 Carmen Calhoun is here with us at Magnify Him. 00:57 We are so happy to have you, Carmen. 01:00 Welcome. 01:02 You know, when I was listening to you in your sound check. 01:05 There is just an anointing on your music 01:07 and I'm so happy that you are here, 01:09 because our viewers need to get acquainted with you 01:12 but you-- this is, you have more than one CD. 01:15 How many CD's do you have? 01:16 I have three. 01:18 And one, the first one is entitled Broken and Blessed. 01:21 The second one is Life and the current one is I am. 01:26 Wow, and did you write 01:27 all of the songs that are on your CD? 01:29 Not all of 'em. I wrote 98%. 01:35 What a blessing it is to be able to sing and write. 01:38 Do you play an instrument as well? 01:39 No, just sing. 01:41 Wow. 01:42 Sing melodies from heaven. 01:43 Amen, amen. When did you start singing? 01:47 I was a little girl, you know, I came from a singing family. 01:50 And so I-- I've been singing all my life. 01:54 Yeah, and your-- 01:55 your brothers and sisters sing as well. 01:57 So when you get together, do you guys sing? 01:59 No, we don't. We don't do it at all. 02:02 But I'm the only one that went solo 02:04 and you know pursue my dream. 02:08 What is your vision for your ministry? 02:11 My vision is to serenade people 02:14 with the love of God through song. 02:16 That's my passion. 02:17 That's what daddy has called me to do. 02:20 It's just when I heard that from him, he says Carmen, 02:23 all I want you to do 02:25 is to serenade them with my love. 02:27 Just tell 'em, how much I love them. 02:31 That's beautiful and that's in your music. 02:33 That's in your music too. 02:34 You can just sense it when you sing Beautiful 02:39 and when you sing Are You Ready to Move. 02:41 I mean, these are just beautiful songs 02:43 that the Lord has given you 02:44 and you give Him praise which is a blessing. 02:47 What would you tell the artist 02:49 that wants to get out there and do something? 02:52 What would you tell that artist? 02:54 Before going out-- 02:56 While you are in the process of doing 02:58 whatever you are doing for the Lord. 03:00 Feed on Jesus. 03:02 Just see Jesus in whatever you are doing 03:05 and you won't become prideful, boastful. 03:08 You won't become so sensitive to what people say, 03:14 it's all about Jesus. 03:17 See that is that goes along 03:19 with our whole philosophy here at Magnify Him 03:21 because it's all about Him. 03:22 We're not here to magnify the artist 03:24 but to magnify Jesus. 03:26 And that's what you do with your music. 03:28 So if you-- you are an author. 03:31 Yes. 03:32 You are a singer. Tell us about your books? 03:35 Well, I wrote a journal first. 03:37 And the journal was entitled Dare to be You 03:40 and it's a 21 day covenant journal. 03:42 And that journal is just simply designed 03:44 for you to hear God and then pen. 03:47 I tell my story and then how I left space 03:51 for you to write and to hear what-- 03:53 just write what daddy is saying and if my story relates to you, 03:57 pen your hurts, pen your anger and then give it to Him 04:00 and you know then repeat if, if you're hurt I'm healed. 04:03 You know, don't stay in your hurt, 04:05 confess your healing. 04:06 Yes, do you do a lot of work with women? 04:08 Yes, women's ministries and all. 04:12 Are you looking to-- what's your goal 04:14 in terms of your ministry, your music ministry? 04:17 What is your-- is your goal? 04:19 My goal is to become full time. 04:21 Okay. Right now I'm not full time. 04:23 I work for a construction company. 04:25 Oh, wow. 04:26 I used to drive a dump truck for them. 04:28 Did you? 04:29 Yeah, then they found out, I had a brain 04:31 and they brought me into the office. 04:33 And so I've been in the office for few years, 04:35 but it is my desire to serenade people 04:38 all over the world with the love of God through song. 04:41 Now where have you been? What places have you gone to? 04:44 I have been to Africa. I went to Nigeria. 04:48 I went to Lima, Peru, Dominican Republic. 04:51 I've been to some other places in just, in the United States. 04:55 Yes, yes, give us in 30 seconds if you can. 05:01 Basically your testimony, 05:02 how did you come to know the Lord? 05:07 30 seconds. 30 seconds, I know. I know. 05:10 I had an experience with daddy. 05:11 I had been going to church for a long time 05:14 and then I had an experience with Him 05:15 because I had lost my father 05:17 and when I lost my father, I mourned for a long time, 05:20 God came in the room and said, look, 05:21 I'll be daddy to you forever, just change your focus. 05:25 So that's my testimony. 05:26 Oh, wait, you can give us a little more. 05:28 You give us a little more. 05:29 So when I heard Him say that to me about turning my focus 05:34 and turn in, I'll be daddy to you soon. 05:37 I call him daddy, I don't call Him God sometimes maybe. 05:41 And then I relate to Jesus as my older brother. 05:44 You know, He's my everything. 05:46 So that's really my testimony. So I'm a daddy's girl. 05:49 You are daddy's girl. Thank you. 15:09 What church do you attend? 15:10 The Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church 15:12 in Harlem, New York City. 15:13 Yay. That's my old church. 15:16 And actually we came there this past summer 15:20 and did a Dare to Dream talent search. 15:22 And you came and sang and we heard you there. 15:24 I did. 15:26 That was a blessing. 15:27 Are you in full time music ministry? 15:30 Actually no, I'm not. 15:32 All right, what do you do? 15:34 Well, I'm an elder in the church 15:35 so that takes up a lot of my time. 15:39 I'm a former mortgage broker. 15:41 I used to be in that business 15:43 when it was a good business to be in. 15:45 Yeah. 15:46 And now I'm-- I'm just land lording so. 15:48 Oh, amen. I mean praise the Lord. 15:51 You're able to do that. That's a blessing. 15:53 What's your vision for your ministry? 15:55 Where do you want to go with your music? 15:58 You know, I realize that God has given me a gift 16:02 and I may not have used it fully to-- 16:07 as fully as I should have early on 16:09 but, you know, He's directing me to minister 16:14 to those who are not ministered to. 16:17 There are so many people out there 16:18 who are lonely in hospitals and nursing homes. 16:23 My mom now has Alzheimer's 16:25 and so I've gotten to see a lot of that side of life. 16:30 And there are a lot of lonely people but they-- 16:33 what's interesting about them 16:34 is that they remember the hymns, 16:38 if they are church people, 16:40 if they were church going people 16:42 in their better days, they remember hymns. 16:46 And when you sing with them, 16:48 they begin to sing, so every third Sabbath 16:51 our elders go to the nursing home in our area. 16:55 One of the many nursing homes in our area. 16:58 My wife's grandmother 17:00 also is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's 17:03 and in that same nursing home when you start singing, 17:06 you'll hear the elderly begin to sing with you 17:10 and if I do nothing else but make them happy. 17:13 I'll be happy. 17:14 How beautiful. 17:15 You know it's so nice to be able to minister 17:17 to those in need 17:18 whether its physical needs, spiritual, emotional. 17:22 That music just really resonates with people. 17:26 It cuts into their spirits so to speak. 17:29 Who's had the largest impact on you musically would you say? 17:33 If I were to say one person, Walter Arties. 17:36 Okay, I can hear that.
