00:00 (melodic music)
00:05 - [Marian] We've grown up in the church
00:06 and have always been somewhat involved in outreach
00:10 but how can we get involved in missions overseas?
00:13 My name is Marian,
00:15 - [Lillian] And I'm Lillian,
00:17 we wanted to find out.
00:18 Join us on our journey
00:20 (Bell ringing)
00:22 to discover the culture,
00:24 the lifestyle,
00:25 - [Marian] he need and the mission,
00:27 in two of southeast Asia's least reached countries.
00:32 Welcome to MissionTrek.
00:37 - Hey, welcome back.
00:39 - In the last episode,
00:40 we traveled from Thailand to Cambodia,
00:42 where we met Tim and Windy Maddocks,
00:44 they live in the city of Siem Reap
00:46 and have been missionaries there for over 25 years.
00:49 - When they surrounded everything to God
00:51 and stepped out by faith alone,
00:53 God began to work through them
00:54 to create what is now known as 'Wat Preah Yesu'
00:57 which means the Jesus school.
00:58 - Now in this episode,
01:00 we are going to see a new project
01:01 that God is building through them,
01:02 and we hope it will show you the blessings
01:04 that come from obeying God.
01:06 Siem Reap is where Angkor Wat,
01:08 some very famous old ruins are located,
01:11 they were built around a thousand years ago
01:14 and today attracts nearly 2 million tourists a year.
01:17 - So Tim and Windy were wondering
01:19 how they could witness all these tourists
01:21 and reach them about our creator God.
01:23 - So God gave them the idea of starting a butterfly garden,
01:27 they call it butterfly paradise.
01:29 (instrumental music)
01:41 - Okay welcome to the butterfly paradise.
01:44 (instrumental music)
01:47 once you come through here Bocha Tigot,
01:49 and then you step into here,
01:51 and what greets you is butterflies.
01:54 And there will be flowers everywhere as well
01:57 'cause butterflies love flowers,
01:59 and this wall here, it will have plants growing out of it
02:03 and hanging of it,
02:04 like a sort of a hanging garden,
02:06 be plenty of flowers here,
02:08 so you're gonna see the best of our butterflies
02:10 as you step through the entrance,
02:12 and right in front you, a waterfall with two sections,
02:15 so with water plummeting of there into this big tank,
02:19 small crocodiles about so big swimming around in the tank,
02:23 and not only do enjoy butterflies
02:24 then you've got crocodiles, you've got fish,
02:27 get a real feel for the place,
02:28 the flowing water create a nice sound atmosphere
02:34 and you'll have the sense that you're in a beautiful garden,
02:37 and then you come around here a bit further,
02:39 this will all be gardens, lovely flowers, plants,
02:43 you can come and take a seat
02:46 and enjoy the waterfall,
02:48 different style of waterfall,
02:50 based on a waterfall that I say in Laos,
02:53 and fish, big coy fish swimming around,
02:57 and of course, butterflies all around you.
03:00 Once you've had a relaxing time enjoying that,
03:03 you can take a walk up the steps.
03:08 Now up here they'll be plants growing in here,
03:11 so it'll be all vegetated,
03:13 they'll be a tree growing out of that hole there,
03:15 and from here you can get a picture of the whole area,
03:19 there's a big waterfall over there,
03:20 there's another one over there,
03:22 there's another one over there,
03:24 so you've gotta see all these water events happening,
03:28 and again, butterflies flying around you,
03:32 plants growing of these, apparently dead trees,
03:36 which are actually concrete power poles,
03:38 relax, enjoy, you seat here,
03:41 so we don't want to hurry anybody through this place,
03:44 we want them to really get a wonderful experience
03:47 with what God has created and just feel really at peace,
03:51 and the other that'll be in here is hyper speed wifi,
03:54 so anybody wanting to Facebook, what they're doing,
03:57 will be free to do that.
04:03 If you're getting to hot,
04:03 you can step into the cave,
04:05 it's not finished yet,
04:07 but it will have a garden in it
04:08 and it will have animal display here,
04:12 and pipes will all be hidden.
04:14 (instrumental music)
04:19 So this will another place were you can sit down, relax,
04:22 again they'll be fish in this little pond,
04:24 they'll be flowers right in front you
04:26 so the butterflies will be right there before you,
04:28 they'll be a full sized elephant just over there,
04:31 concrete of course,
04:33 and the waterfall off in the background,
04:36 and so you can get a real sense that your in Asia,
04:40 and enjoying the beauty of nature.
04:46 Now do you girls like the Flintstones?
04:49 Did you ever hear of the Flinstones?
04:50 - Uhun.
04:51 - Yeah well this their house.
04:53 (girls laughing)
04:55 this is gonna be a drinks shop,
04:58 so people can enter the cave and buy a drink,
05:01 fresh fruit shake or some other kind of drink,
05:04 because by the time they get here,
05:06 they're gonna be hot and thirsty, so.
05:09 And this is a fish tank,
05:10 so glass front again and it'll have some Cambodian,
05:13 large Cambodian fish in it,
05:15 water's pouring of the rock there,
05:17 through a hole here, down the outside.
05:20 Now for the sake of shortening the tour,
05:22 we'll go this way.
05:24 (instrumental music)
05:32 For this pond here,
05:33 this is to let the fish do the foot massage,
05:37 and at the moment,
05:38 you probably wouldn't want to put your feet in that,
05:39 but it'll be looking a lot better than this,
05:42 nice clear and lots of fish
05:45 to come chew the old dead skin of your legs,
05:47 which people seem to like to have done in Siem Reap,
05:50 and pay good money for
05:52 but this will be free, part of the ticket price,
05:54 and you can enjoy the waterfall over here
05:55 while you're sitting here,
05:56 letting the fish chew on your legs.
06:01 This is gonna be a tourist garden,
06:03 so this has got five levels here,
06:04 four levels on this side,
06:06 and a very pleasant waterfall falling down the middle,
06:10 and it has a beautiful sound to it
06:11 especially as the water runs through the rocks,
06:14 and by the time you get here,
06:15 you're really hot,
06:17 and you're really looking for an air conditioned room,
06:19 so you can walk through the cave,
06:21 and then step into the air conditioned cinema,
06:25 and here you can learn more about what God has created
06:28 through the video that'll be showing
06:29 on the screen down there.
06:31 If you get thirsty, you want to have a drink
06:33 while you're watching the movies,
06:34 there'll be a door there,
06:36 you can step into the restaurant next door,
06:37 buy a drink and then come back,
06:39 and sit down and enjoy.
06:41 And from here, you can enjoy something that's quite unique,
06:43 and that is a waterfall that drops as a tube of water,
06:47 through the roof there,
06:49 into that wishing well,
06:51 and then flowing into the pond again with lots of fish.
06:54 (instrumental music)
07:01 so you got to this part and now you're hungry,
07:04 so you have a choice,
07:05 you can either sit out here with the butterflies,
07:08 with an umbrella and flowers all around,
07:10 so the butterflies are all around you and eat,
07:13 you can sit over here in the cave,
07:15 under the shade,
07:17 or you can enter the glass doors here,
07:19 and enter into the air conditioned restaurant,
07:21 and so you have three choices,
07:23 and the glass windows will allow you
07:24 to keep enjoying the butterflies while you're eating
07:27 even if you are inside.
07:29 You can enjoy that waterfall again
07:31 dropping through the roof,
07:32 and enjoy the very unique rock work in the ceiling here.
07:35 - How long do you think it'll take to finish?
07:38 - Um, when I have enough money,
07:40 maybe two, three, four months.
07:43 Depends how much time I can commit to it
07:44 to make it really happen.
07:46 The part that's gonna take the longest is the landscaping,
07:50 so the buildings, I can put the building team onto that,
07:52 they can do that pretty fast,
07:54 but the landscaping has to be custom designed
07:57 so that'll take quite a while.
08:01 Just in here will be probably the important room
08:04 in the whole building,
08:06 and this where we will grow the caterpillars to butterflies,
08:10 - Mm
08:11 - So it'll be an air conditioned room,
08:12 and there we need to produce
08:15 between two and four thousand butterflies a month.
08:18 - Whoa.
08:20 - So we have to,
08:22 we're planning to have
08:23 at least twenty species of butterflies,
08:25 that we're growing here, releasing into the cage,
08:28 and then they'll be
08:30 at least ten or fifteen butterfly species, smaller ones,
08:33 that will be self breeding in the cage,
08:36 we'll just provide them with food
08:37 and they'll just multiply themselves inside the cage,
08:41 cause the small ones,
08:42 a bit fiddly to take care of a tiny little caterpillar.
08:45 We have on the other side over there behind the threes,
08:48 lot of plant's planted that are the food plants
08:51 for different kinds of butterflies.
08:53 So we can harvest the leaves,
08:55 feed the caterpillars,
08:57 and when they turn into chrysalis,
08:59 prepare them for display,
09:01 and then watch them hatch
09:03 and there are some crazy caterpillars,
09:05 really really beautiful,
09:08 and I plan to build one of them
09:10 as the worlds largest concrete caterpillar sculpture,
09:15 just outside the entrance there,
09:17 and it'll be about five meters tall,
09:19 and about twenty meters long.
09:21 - [Lillian] Whoa.
09:22 - Yeah it's yellow, orange and black.
09:24 It has these huge horns hanging of it,
09:26 so it'll be quite a sight.
09:27 Then we have an educational center,
09:29 so you can come and learn more about butterflies,
09:31 some really cool things
09:33 like butterflies, when they hatch out of the chrysalis,
09:37 they know how to pump their wings up,
09:40 and they know how to dry their wings
09:43 and then they also know how to fly in strong winds,
09:46 having never been taught,
09:48 and not only that, they know how to find a mate,
09:51 and how to mate on the wing
09:54 and they've never practiced that one either,
09:57 so you think about Air Force pilots,
10:00 where they have refueling planes,
10:02 in the jet fighters, they have to practice for months,
10:06 to be able to refuel in air,
10:09 but these butterflies, they hatch out,
10:11 and within an hour of hatching,
10:12 they are ready to mate in the air like refueling,
10:17 and they can smell their food plant
10:21 for 3 to 5 kilometers away,
10:25 and they track it,
10:26 when they find it, they scratch it with their foot,
10:28 and they taste through their foot,
10:30 if they've got the right plant,
10:31 they'll lay their eggs on it.
10:33 (instrumental music)
10:36 Through that door there,
10:38 it'll take you into another building,
10:41 and that building will be a small animal house,
10:43 so it'll have snakes and lizards and frogs,
10:46 and insects, bigger insects
10:48 for people to go and have a look at,
10:50 live ones of course,
10:52 and we also plan to have an aquaponics center over there,
10:56 we're we'll grow vegetables for the restaurant,
10:59 by filtering the water from the ponds,
11:01 and growing the vegetables in the water.
11:03 And this here is a turtle pond,
11:05 so the turtles that currently live in my house,
11:07 turtles and tortoises, they'll live here,
11:09 there's a little island in the middle
11:10 where they can sun bake
11:11 and you can enjoy,
11:13 and they'll be free to walk around within their pond area,
11:16 over here, they'll be a waterfall,
11:19 which will drop in front,
11:20 so you better stand behind the waterfall and look through
11:24 into the garden,
11:26 and then they'll be other gardens underneath here,
11:29 and then to finish it off,
11:30 you step through some glass doors here
11:33 into the souvenir shop,
11:36 and we plan to manufacture as many souvenirs
11:38 as we can here on campus,
11:41 professionally sort of done souvenirs,
11:43 people will exit through the door way over there,
11:47 when they exit, they'll see a giant butterfly,
11:51 just outside also, made of concrete and steel,
11:54 - Whoa,
11:57 that's gonna be a really cool place.
12:00 - I hope so, I hope people find it really cool,
12:02 and they want to come back.
12:04 - [Cameraman] Are you guys blown away?
12:05 - Hmm.
12:06 - Uhun.
12:07 - And the income generated will be obviously
12:09 used to help run the orphanage and the schools,
12:11 and do other projects,
12:14 probably develop more schools.
12:17 - We definitely have to come back when this is finished.
12:19 - Yeah, this place is really cool.
12:23 (instrumental music)
12:31 - So how can we help to get involved with this project?
12:33 - You can help pray,
12:34 pray that God will give me wisdom to finish it,
12:37 and that God will provide the finances
12:39 so that we can finish it,
12:41 and get it open,
12:42 and let the world enjoy the world of butterflies.
12:46 - So how long have you been working on it already?
12:49 - We began working actually on the cage back in March,
12:53 of 2016, so next month, it'll be twelve months.
12:58 - Where did you get this idea?
13:00 - A friend of mine gave me the idea,
13:02 his idea was something fairly small,
13:04 and I sort of dismissed it,
13:07 but God wouldn't let me dismiss it,
13:09 and it just kept growing and growing and growing,
13:12 so I really think it's God's idea,
13:13 I tried to convince him many times that we shouldn't do it,
13:17 but every time I tried to convince him,
13:19 he convinced me otherwise.
13:21 - How does God convince you of something.
13:23 - Well in this case,
13:24 it's like 'God I don't think we should do this project,
13:26 it's too big,'
13:27 and then God will show me a new butterfly
13:29 that very day that I'm arguing with him,
13:31 or he would show me a butterfly laying an egg on a plant,
13:34 that I didn't know was the host plant,
13:37 and it's like
13:38 'God, you know I'm arguing with you today,
13:41 and then you're showing me these things about butterflies,'
13:44 and so for me it's like God just trying to tell me,
13:47 through the butterflies, 'you gotta do this.'
13:50 - Is this like, gonna be like the biggest butterfly garden
13:52 in the world or something like that?
13:54 - It won't be the biggest,
13:55 but it would probably be in the top 10,
13:58 but hopefully the most beautiful.
14:00 - Where are you gonna get all the plants for the landscape.
14:03 - That's a very good question
14:04 and I started thinking about that two years ago
14:06 when we started working on the idea,
14:08 and I got this idea
14:10 that was gonna cost a lot of money for plants,
14:13 and so I better start collecting,
14:16 so about two years ago,
14:17 I started collecting one of each kind,
14:20 and multiplying them, so if you want to come with me,
14:22 I'll show you what we've done.
14:24 (instrumental music)
14:27 Now did you want to see the snakes?
14:29 - Will they still be there when you open this place?
14:31 - No, when we open the place,
14:33 they'll have their own special room
14:34 like an enclosure with nice glass fronts
14:36 so people can see them,
14:37 not locked away here in the dark,
14:40 but right now, they're safe here.
14:43 (jungle music)
14:50 - Hello, Hello where are you?
14:54 Turn around and look at me,
14:55 there you go.
14:56 - [Marian] Look at his face.
15:00 - They say that go for the eyes,
15:03 so if they can't see your eyes,
15:05 they're not gonna strike you.
15:07 This ones has two bumps in it,
15:08 they're ducks that it ate last week,
15:10 and the one down here has one bump in it,
15:13 last night it ate a duck for dinner.
15:15 There's one more down here,
15:17 - [Lillian] Poor duck.
15:18 - But these are wild snakes,
15:20 so we're just trying to leave them in their wild state,
15:24 not tame them, and so wild animal eat live animals,
15:28 so we leave the animals in here
15:31 and we give the duck food and water
15:33 and when the snakes are hungry, they'll eat them.
15:36 - [Marian] So you just like found snakes
15:38 and brought them here?
15:39 - No, no, I bought the snakes.
15:40 - [Marian] Okay.
15:41 - Now I should tell you the story,
15:43 it's a funny sort of story about danger,
15:46 see the first two ducks I put in here,
15:49 they didn't know anything about snakes,
15:52 and the snakes coil up over here in the corner,
15:55 and so at night, the ducks would go and sleep on them,
15:58 even during the day,
15:59 and so literally the ducks are sleeping
16:02 on the heads of the snakes,
16:04 and the snakes didn't mind.
16:05 One day I watched the duck put his beak
16:06 under the head of the snake
16:08 and lift the snake's head up,
16:10 so that's how close they are,
16:12 and the snakes just didn't bother about them,
16:15 but when they got hungry, they ate them.
16:16 The snake is about 12 feet long,
16:19 but they will grow to about 20 feet long.
16:23 - Those are big snakes.
16:24 - Kinda cool.
16:25 - She likes snakes.
16:27 - [Marian] She doesn't like snakes.
16:29 (instrumental music)
16:33 - [Lillian] Whoa.
16:35 - [Marian] But there's butterflies,
16:37 there's already butterflies.
16:39 - Nice butterflies over here.
16:41 So in the last two years,
16:42 I've collected over two hundred varieties of plants,
16:45 actually probably it's closer to about three hundred now,
16:48 and so this is part of the collection,
16:51 and over there, there's a lot more,
16:54 and so most of them we started with one plant,
16:57 or one plant bag and we just started dividing them up,
17:00 and some it's easier than others,
17:04 but it's been going pretty successfully,
17:08 and the students work here with me
17:09 to help produce the plants,
17:12 and it's really fun working with plants,
17:17 seeing how beautiful they are,
17:19 most of these plants aren't full size
17:21 because we keep chopping them up,
17:23 so we don't let them get to big,
17:25 but I have a couple of these in my garden,
17:27 they're like about how many feet,
17:31 4 feet across, like a huge big nest,
17:35 so these would grow much bigger,
17:37 maybe come down how where we've got some nice plants here,
17:40 just watch the slob.
17:42 (instrumental music)
17:53 These are some of my favorite plants,
17:54 these are called the bromeliads,
17:56 they're like a pineapple,
17:58 and they're really colorful,
18:01 so these will be hanging out off rocks off trees,
18:03 and that sort of thing in the butterfly paradise,
18:05 you've got the ferns, they don't grow much taller than that,
18:09 and then we've got plants like this,
18:12 leaves will grow about so high,
18:14 and these ones, these will grow
18:18 about 9 to 10 feet high,
18:20 these have a big red flower, they're called heliconias,
18:23 and you can see this one,
18:25 it's red, green, white,
18:27 these ones, they have purple on the back,
18:31 and then green,
18:34 and this one down here,
18:36 it's one of my favorite ones,
18:37 look at the color of that.
18:38 - [Girls] Whoa, that is so pretty.
18:42 - And you can see the butterflies like it,
18:44 most of these butterflies are just one kind,
18:47 and it's called the gray pansy,
18:49 but at the moment
18:51 that's the most common butterfly we have around here,
18:53 but here on this property,
18:54 we've seen over one hundred different kinds of butterflies.
18:57 - Whoa.
18:58 - Most of them breed here,
19:00 so that's one of the things that also help me
19:02 to convince me to do this project,
19:04 the very fact that there was so many butterflies
19:06 that lived here,
19:08 and not just little ones, big ones,
19:10 and it's like God had prearranged
19:13 that we have the food plants for them,
19:15 years and years before he ever got the idea to me.
19:21 - Wow that was so amazing,
19:23 when we were there twelve months ago,
19:25 it was hard to imagine what it would look like finished
19:27 with all the plants and butterflies,
19:29 - Yeah, it's gonna be so awesome.
19:30 - It is definitely.
19:31 We have a special guest with us,
19:33 Tim Maddocks, welcome to MissionTrek.
19:36 - Thank you very much, it's a great pleasure to be here.
19:37 - It's great to have you.
19:39 - So the footage that we saw in the segment
19:41 was shot last year in February,
19:43 - Yes.
19:44 - So has it changed at all since then?
19:46 - It's changed a lot,
19:48 it's not finished yet but it's almost.
19:51 - That's really exciting.
19:52 - So can give us an update.
19:53 - Yeah actually I took some video
19:55 just before I left two weeks ago,
19:57 so I'd love to share it with you.
19:58 - Awesome.
19:59 - So you might remember we came through the entrance,
20:02 well now you can see the plants,
20:03 there's glass where the crocodile pond is going to be,
20:06 waterfalls are still not working but they will be soon,
20:10 you can see butterflies,
20:11 there's no wire on the sides yet,
20:14 but that allows the butterflies to just fly in and fly out,
20:20 and lot's of butterflies come everyday,
20:22 it's butterfly paradise of course,
20:24 they want to come to paradise.
20:25 (girls laugh)
20:27 So you can see, there's a lot of color in the plants,
20:29 purples, oranges, yellows,
20:32 and the plants are growing really really well,
20:36 - [Lillian] So much different than when we were there
20:37 last time.
20:39 - [Marian] So much more color.
20:41 - [Lillian] Yeah.
20:43 - [Tim] Yeah we're just coming up
20:44 towards the Flintstones house,
20:47 (girls laugh)
20:48 which is gonna be a drinks shop,
20:50 and you can see how much the plants have,
20:53 well there wasn't any plants there before,
20:55 but how they've grown since we planted them,
20:57 we haven't actually set up the shop yet,
21:00 there's glass in the fish tank,
21:01 just here on the left,
21:03 here there's a little grass lawn,
21:04 and some bromeliads and coleus,
21:08 the colors are really popping nice.
21:11 - [Lillian] Was it really challenging to figure out
21:13 where to put the plants and like arrange everything?
21:16 - Yeah I spent hundreds of hours
21:17 looking at other peoples gardens on the internet,
21:20 studying what they've done
21:21 - [Girls] Wow, yeah.
21:22 - [Tim] And just praying about it ...
21:23 - I can't imagine like all the details are like
21:26 what girls wear, oh, that would overwhelm me.
21:29 - We'd lay out the plants,
21:30 have a look at it, no I don't like that,
21:31 rearrange then get it looking like...
21:33 - Oh my
21:35 - So how do you raise butterflies?
21:36 - Well you begin by collecting eggs,
21:39 so the butterfly breeders have to go out,
21:42 find the eggs on the special plants
21:44 that the butterfly will lay its eggs on,
21:46 we call that a host plant,
21:47 and then they'll take them back to the laboratory,
21:51 and wash them, sterilize them,
21:53 so there's no bacteria on the eggs
21:55 that could infect the caterpillars,
21:57 dry them and then just keep them safe,
22:01 for five, six or seven days,
22:03 until they hatch and then the hard work begins,
22:07 making sure that they've got enough food,
22:09 cleaning their poop out of their containers,
22:10 - [Lillian] Oh wow.
22:11 - [Tim] And they really poop,
22:12 and then everyday, they've got to be fed once or twice,
22:18 and the leaves that we're feeding them
22:20 have to be clean, sterilized,
22:21 to make sure theirs no bacteria and no virus,
22:24 and just keeping away parasites
22:26 that might come to try to infect them,
22:28 so we'll have an air conditioned room
22:30 which is where we keep them,
22:32 as everyday, twice a day,
22:34 somebody gonna have to check them
22:36 make sure they're doing okay,
22:37 they go through five stages of growth, as a caterpillar,
22:41 we call those instars,
22:43 and each instar, at the end of each instar,
22:45 they shed their skin,
22:47 it's like changing clothes, but they have to do that,
22:50 because everyday they double their weight.
22:52 - [Lillian] Oh my.
22:54 - [Tim] And as they double their weight of course,
22:55 they're getting bigger and bigger,
22:56 their skin just doesn't stretch enough,
22:58 so they have to change their skin
22:59 so they can have a bigger skin for the next stage of growth,
23:02 so depending on the caterpillar,
23:04 they might eat for twelve days, fifteen days, twenty days,
23:08 the bigger the caterpillar, the bigger the butterfly,
23:09 the longer they eat for,
23:11 and when they've finished their fifth instar
23:15 then they will sow some silk onto a branch
23:19 or whatever it is they are going to attach to,
23:21 and they make a hook in their tail end,
23:25 and they hook that into the silk,
23:26 and they hang and then they shed their last skin,
23:30 but instead of a new skin, they've got a chrysalis coating,
23:33 - Oh wow.
23:34 - And so that's when the miracle really happens,
23:37 because then all the cells, almost all the cells
23:41 break down into a liquid soup like thing
23:43 - Wow
23:44 - Oh my
23:45 - And a few cells begin building a butterfly.
23:47 - Wow
23:48 - So over the next five, six or seven days,
23:49 or longer, those cells have to build a butterfly.
23:52 - Wow
23:53 - Now it's a miracle that they can do that,
23:55 because they were a caterpillar and not a butterfly,
23:58 so all that information is recorded on the genetics
24:01 inside their cells.
24:02 - Wow
24:03 - Once the butterfly is built,
24:05 it knows just the right time,
24:08 to stretch, split open their cocoon,
24:10 and come out.
24:12 Now its got new legs, it didn't have legs like,
24:14 it had these little tiny legs before,
24:16 and now its got long legs but it knows how to use them
24:18 stand up, and then it's gonna unfold its wings,
24:22 its wings are all folded up,
24:25 and it has to pump blood into them,
24:27 stretch them out until they're flat,
24:30 and then hold them there until they dry,
24:33 once they dry, they can fly.
24:35 - [Lillian] Wow
24:36 - And so we have a butterfly,
24:38 so once the caterpillars become a chrysalis,
24:43 we're gonna have a special case,
24:45 where we hang them up, glass front,
24:47 so that our visitors can see them,
24:49 and as they come out of the chrysalis,
24:51 they can watch them come out,
24:52 watch them stretch their wings,
24:54 and if they're there at the right time
24:56 when the staff open the glass doors,
24:58 watch them fly out into the butterfly garden.
25:00 - Wow
25:01 - That's awesome
25:02 - That's cool
25:03 - So when the garden is finished,
25:04 how many people will you have working there?
25:07 - Well I'm thinking about thirty,
25:09 because we've got ticket sales,
25:12 we've got drinks and the restaurant,
25:16 we need people in the education area,
25:19 we need maybe tour guides,
25:21 for people who really want to know the butterflies better,
25:23 someone to tell them about it,
25:25 we need people to sell in the souvenir shop,
25:28 and we need a manger, accountant, cleaners,
25:33 gardeners, so they're lots of people
25:35 so that's thirty people all together.
25:37 - Wow.
25:39 - So since you've built the whole thing by faith,
25:41 where did all the money come from?
25:43 - God is able to touch the lives of people,
25:47 impress them to give
25:49 and so we've been praying all through this process,
25:52 that God would inspire people to give,
25:54 we don't ask them for money,
25:56 and it's just a miracle,
25:58 we don't always have the money to do this,
26:00 but we just keep working in faith
26:01 that God is going to provide
26:03 and it's just amazing to see what God has done so far.
26:06 - Yeah, it is incredible.
26:08 - So how'd you learn how to manage all the plants
26:11 and butterflies and stuff?
26:12 - That actually goes back a long way,
26:14 my grandfather was a gardener,
26:16 and I learnt to garden, to take care of flowers from him,
26:20 and then I studied biology at university
26:23 and so I learnt more about plants, about animals,
26:26 and so, for many years,
26:28 I haven't been very much in the biology area,
26:31 but God has brought me back to an area that I started in
26:35 and an area that I love
26:36 and giving me the opportunity to do the things
26:39 that I really love to do.
26:40 - That's really cool.
26:41 - Yeah, how God just like had those natural interests
26:44 in you, and then now you can use them,
26:47 and be witnessing for him at the same time.
26:50 - Yeah and also to share them with other people,
26:52 so we've grown the plants and flowers,
26:54 people have come to love doing the same,
26:57 and as we work with the butterflies,
26:59 yeah, they've come to love the butterflies,
27:01 so it's a part of passing it all on too.
27:03 - Yeah
27:04 - So should everyone who wants to reach people
27:06 for God build a butterfly garden?
27:08 - I don't think so.
27:09 When you look at the flowers, you look at the butterflies,
27:12 the animals, there's just so much variety out there,
27:15 and I believe in God gives each person
27:17 different skills, different talents,
27:19 and he gives them a different calling,
27:21 so it wouldn't work if everybody was doing the same thing,
27:25 so there are many ways to reach people
27:28 with the love of Jesus,
27:29 and people should use the skills
27:31 and the talents that they've been given to do that.
27:34 - Thank you so much for being on the show with us today.
27:36 - It's been a great pleasure to be here
27:38 and I look forward to seeing both of you
27:40 at butterfly paradise,
27:41 - [Lillian] Yeah
27:42 - And seeing our viewers as well.
27:43 - Please pray that butterfly paradise
27:45 will be used to reach the unreached.
27:48 - See you next time on MissionTrek.
