00:05 - [Mary Ann] We've grown up in the church
00:06 and have always been somewhat involved in outreach
00:10 but how can we get involved in missions overseas?
00:13 My name is Mary Ann.
00:15 - [Lilyann] And I'm Lilyann.
00:16 We wanted to find out.
00:18 Join us on our journey
00:20 (gong ringing)
00:22 to discover the culture, the lifestyle.
00:25 - [Mary Ann] The need and the mission.
00:26 - [Lilyann] In two of Southeast Asia's
00:29 least reached countries.
00:31 Welcome to MissionTREK.
00:36 Hey it's so good to have you join us again.
00:39 - In the last episode we met a girl
00:41 who was raised from the dead
00:42 and Myranda Lumbee who is hoping to plant schools
00:45 in impoverished villages.
00:46 - In this episode we will visit an amazing center
00:49 of influence being built
00:51 by a young couple living in Bangkok.
00:53 - Then we get to go to a Thai cooking class
00:56 where we will learn
00:57 how to make really good tasting traditional Thai dishes.
01:00 But don't worry, it's all vegetarian.
01:02 - But before we learn how to cook Thai food,
01:05 we visit Bryan and Jessica Atwell
01:07 who are building the center of influence.
01:09 - Mm-hm, before they moved to Bangkok
01:11 they were newly married Bible workers in America
01:13 and had just had their first child.
01:15 - They found out about the great need in Bangkok
01:17 by watching "I Want This City" which you can also watch
01:20 at Iwantthiscity.com.
01:22 They took the call personally.
01:24 - Yeah, so they moved to Bangkok and the first thing
01:27 they did was start learning the language.
01:29 - Thai is a hard language to learn because it is tonal.
01:31 - Yeah, so that means that not
01:34 only do the words mean something different
01:36 but each way you say them means something different too.
01:39 Like my, my, my and my all mean different things.
01:43 But it's the same word.
01:45 - So it must be best to learn it while you're young.
01:47 - Definitely, older people have a really hard time with it.
01:50 So that is just one of the advantages
01:52 of being young in the mission field.
01:53 - It was slow for them at first, but God blessed
01:56 and he gave them a huge building for their project.
01:59 - So could you explain a little bit
02:01 about what a center of influence is?
02:04 - Yes, it's a term Mrs. White uses quite often
02:07 when referring to the work in the cities.
02:09 She says it is the positive duty of God's people
02:12 to go into the regions beyond
02:14 and establish new centers of influence
02:16 wherever an opening can be found.
02:18 - Wow, that sounds like a really important thing to do.
02:20 - Yeah, for sure.
02:22 She talked a lot about missionary work
02:24 to the people of the cities
02:25 but we have tended to ignore these instructions.
02:27 - Yeah, thankfully the Atwells did not ignore God's call
02:31 for them and after learning the language have been led
02:34 to this large building.
02:35 - One of the great things about this building is that
02:38 it's just a few hundred feet from the main gate
02:41 of a huge university with over 500,000 students.
02:45 Wow can you imagine a school
02:47 with over half a million students?
02:49 - No, that's bigger than many cities.
02:51 - Yeah, I'm excited to meet that Atwells
02:53 and see their place.
02:54 - Me too.
02:56 While we were there, they were in the early stages
02:58 of building so keep in mind that it's under construction.
03:01 (gentle music)
03:06 - We're with the Atwells, Jessica and Brian,
03:09 at their house and we wanted to ask them a few questions
03:13 about their project, what they do here in Bangkok.
03:16 - So how'd you guys come here to live in Bangkok?
03:19 - Well we ended up coming to Bangkok
03:22 because God impressed us that we were supposed to
03:27 give all and come live in a foreign mission field.
03:29 We didn't have any money
03:31 but we had our lives and since Jesus died for us,
03:33 we're the most expensive things in the entire world
03:36 because giving your life over here.
03:38 - Basically we quit our jobs and sold everything that we had
03:41 that was of any value and gave away the rest.
03:43 And moved over here.
03:45 - So you have two little kids, right?
03:48 - [Jessica] Mm-hm.
03:49 - Is it scary raising kids in the mission field?
03:51 - It's petrifying to raise children period,
03:54 no matter where you are (laughing).
03:56 But it's an adventure
03:58 and that's what I wanted for my kids.
03:59 I didn't want just a regular old life.
04:02 I wanted them to have a unique childhood.
04:07 - And I think raising them where God wants us to be,
04:09 I think is the best place that we can be.
04:11 - Yeah it's the safest place in the world
04:12 is wherever God wants you to be.
04:14 - Mm-hm. - Yeah, so.
04:15 - What do you do here?
04:17 - We are in the midst of setting up a ministry here
04:21 that's just getting started.
04:22 We did language study
04:24 for a couple of years and yeah, now onto the ministry.
04:28 - So-- - He does the hard stuff.
04:30 - We're setting up a center of influence
04:32 where we can build relationships with people.
04:34 - We had all these different ideas
04:36 about what God wanted us to do.
04:37 Maybe we'll just have a small little cafe
04:39 and, oh no, we should do a restaurant.
04:42 Oh, but the gym thing would be so cool.
04:44 And you know we should have like a church plant there too,
04:47 so we could do meetings and we felt so scattered.
04:49 What did God want us to do?
04:50 And then we just kind of gave it up and said,
04:52 "Well whatever building he leads us to
04:54 "then that's what we'll do."
04:55 Whatever it fits.
04:56 Well then God gave us this monstrous building,
04:59 four floors and the project is all of these projects.
05:03 And so we weren't scatterbrained,
05:05 they were all God's ideas, he just wants us to do them all.
05:08 - And so the first floor will be a cafe,
05:10 second floor will be a restaurant,
05:11 the third floor would be a church
05:12 and kind of like a meeting lecture hall
05:14 and then the fourth floor and the fifth floor combined
05:18 will be a rock climbing gym and a fitness center
05:20 for helping people.
05:21 We're wanting to focus on health
05:23 and so we're kind of trying to get a complete picture
05:26 of health, not just nutrition but extra fitness as well.
05:30 - I'm so glad he didn't show us what he wanted us
05:32 to do three years ago
05:34 'cause we would have been way too scared to get over here.
05:36 And that's just how God leads is,
05:37 you know, it's always adventurous.
05:39 every little baby step is adventurous.
05:41 It's never too much but it's always enough to scare you
05:44 and keep it exciting, so.
05:46 - As we got more into establishing what we're doing,
05:49 we realized that this center not only would be
05:51 for reaching out to other people but it can,
05:53 it's going to be training the workers
05:55 that are coming to work with us.
05:57 And so as we work in connection
05:59 with our Bible workers one-on-one
06:01 and then working with other people,
06:03 they're able to witness how we all work together.
06:06 And so it will also serve as a training center
06:08 where the goal will be within a few years
06:12 to be able to see which ones are really solid
06:14 and working well and we can take them
06:16 and help them establish their own center
06:19 in a different part of the town, of the city
06:21 or in a different part of the country even.
06:22 And then they can kind of continue this model on their own.
06:25 - God gave you your own personality,
06:28 like stand in your God-given personality
06:30 and be no man's shadow.
06:32 Be who God made you to be.
06:34 All those unique things you like and dislike,
06:36 the passion he gave you,
06:37 he can use to reach others.
06:40 God doesn't want your life to be boring.
06:42 He gave you a personality and talents and skills
06:45 and whatever you like to do.
06:47 If you want to use that for the Lord, he'll use it.
06:49 Let it be Christ-led and it'll be awesome.
06:52 It'll be so exciting.
06:53 I love our life, I don't ever want to go back.
06:57 (laughing) It's perfect here.
06:58 - Well thanks so much for sharing
06:59 we've learned a lot more about your background story
07:03 and we're excited to see the project.
07:05 So, could you take us to the building?
07:06 - Yeah, let's go check it out.
07:07 - Okay, you guys have fun at the building.
07:09 I hear Asher, I gotta go.
07:10 (gentle music)
07:20 (people chattering)
07:22 - And so they can sit up at the bar top.
07:24 We'll have plugs here so they can plug in their laptop.
07:26 And they can kind of work on homework, order smoothie.
07:29 This will be the library for people
07:31 to read Christian literature as well as some stuff
07:34 on learning English 'cause we can't legally teach
07:37 more than seven students at a time
07:39 and all of these students have
07:41 to pass an English class in order to graduate.
07:43 And so they want to learn English.
07:44 And so a couple of Thai workers suggested,
07:47 what if you had books where they could kind of read
07:49 and study themselves and then they can come out
07:51 and talk to you to practice.
07:53 But then that's not us teaching them.
07:54 So we're not breaking the rules
07:57 but we're still technically kind of helping them
07:59 with their English classes.
08:01 If you want to go up to the second floor.
08:03 So this floor, there will be a wall coming out here.
08:05 It goes here, all the way across.
08:09 It will be a half wall the rest will be glass,
08:10 going up and around.
08:11 And there'll be a sliding glass door there
08:13 to go into the restaurant.
08:15 (gentle music)
08:18 Two really big things here in the university age people,
08:21 they suffer from depression and that often leads
08:24 to addiction, alcoholism.
08:26 And so we want to hold
08:27 some ongoing meetings and classes about that.
08:31 So this room here will be the meeting room
08:33 where we'll hold those
08:34 but as well as different health topics.
08:36 We're wanting to give them practical help
08:37 on how they can change their health
08:39 so that they can have more energy, they can be happier,
08:42 they can be healthier but then that's also an opportunity
08:46 for us to build a relationship in that.
08:48 'Cause when you help someone with something
08:50 that they're struggling with,
08:51 they kind of build a connection with you.
08:53 So we can bridge that opportunity
08:55 to building a relation with us
08:56 to build a relationship with God.
08:58 The last floor is none of the fun floor.
09:03 So this is where we're going to have the climbing wall
09:05 and the fitness center.
09:07 The Thai people aren't super excited about exercising.
09:10 I mean, it's hot so it's not really all that fun.
09:14 But we found that rock climbing is something
09:16 that they're good at
09:17 but they don't see it as exercise really.
09:19 They see it as just like an activity to do.
09:22 But it is a full-body exercise as well as the mind.
09:25 It helps stimulate the mind and so it helps with depression
09:27 and some of these other things that we're trying
09:28 to help them with as well.
09:31 (gentle music)
09:35 - Well thank you so much for showing us your project.
09:38 - You're welcome, thank you for coming.
09:40 - We'll definitely keep this project in our prayers
09:43 and we'd like to encourage all of our viewers
09:45 to also pray for this project.
09:47 Support it if you feel led to.
09:50 (gentle music)
09:58 After showing us the center of influence building,
10:00 Mr. Atwell asked if he wanted to do some climbing
10:03 on a nearby wall.
10:04 We were excited to give it a try.
10:15 - That's kind of an easy spot to grab.
10:18 This is a big one. Try to focus on getting your feet up
10:20 and then finding a hand after you do that.
10:29 (people chattering)
10:32 There, there you go.
10:35 There you go, nice.
10:36 - [Mary Ann] Good job!
10:37 Hold on!
10:47 (Lilyann laughing)
10:49 - [Cameraman] How you feel about that?
10:51 - My hands are just shaking, like this arm (sighs).

11:05 for their center of influence.
11:08 - The renovation process has been going on now
11:11 for almost 15 months, I think.
11:14 We got original estimate of four months
11:16 to fully renovate everything and have it finished.
11:20 And you know throughout this process
11:22 there was a lot of things that were on the original invoice
11:24 from the builder and I looked at it
11:26 and I was trying to save money
11:27 and so I started cutting things out.
11:28 I said, "Well, I know how to do this,
11:29 "I can do that, I can do this, I can do that."
11:31 For the most part I was by myself for a lot of it

11:38 and I was talking to Jessica
11:40 and I was kind of ranting
11:41 about how I was so frustrated with,

12:46 When we got into climbing and we felt impressed
12:49 that we could use that as an avenue
12:51 to bridge relationships to Christ
12:53 that was kind of the exciting main focus
12:55 that we were trying to emphasize.
12:58 I contacted the local company that would come out
13:02 and build a wall for us and they wanted like $97,000.
13:07 And so at first we said, "Well God can provide
13:10 "if that's what he wants us to do."
13:13 And so we were kind of telling people in our newsletter
13:16 that there's so much money we needed to be able
13:17 to have this happen
13:19 and we didn't get a single donation towards it.
13:21 So we just let it go. I just said, "You know what?
13:23 "If God lets us have a climbing wall,
13:24 "we'll have a climbing wall at some point."
13:29 When we were in the States actually,
13:30 we tried to meet with a few different people
13:31 to see if they could come and help establish the wall
13:33 and then stay on and work it.
13:35 There was one young guy that we met with
13:37 who seemed really promising and so we met with him

15:25 He said, "It's called F5 Challenge."
15:28 They do fitness events,
15:29 the five Fs are fun, fitness, faith,
15:32 fellowship and fortitude.
15:33 And so we prayed about it and said, "Well this seems like

15:37 It's like one club.
15:39 And so on the front actually we put the sign the first time
15:41 we put up was Club F5.
15:42 And so it's kind of like a membership thing,
15:45 you can sign up, you can be a member of the gym

15:49 at the restaurants and certain number of juices.
15:51 It's kind of all one thing

16:00 But the real goal is that once a month
16:02 we take a trip, we go outside of the city.
16:04 There's a few places within three hours of here

16:08 but then we can take people out,
16:10 we can do a weekend camping trip, get them out
16:11 to where they can be in nature, see God's creation
16:14 and it gives us opportunities to talk to them about God.
16:17 We do worships with them in the morning and evening.
16:20 The main important thing is building a relationship.
16:23 And when you're at the bottom of a rope
16:24 and you're holding that rope
16:26 and you're the only reason
16:27 why that person isn't gonna fall down,
16:29 it builds a lot of that trust that is an important factor

16:44 We had a bouldering competition.
16:46 And it was kind of a sneak peak
16:48 for all of the climbers in this area.
16:50 And what was really amazing is we had
16:52 over 200 people show up and it was a huge success.
16:56 I'm just so thankful.
16:58 God pulled it off.
16:59 - So the plan from here is to open the cafe.
17:03 From there we're then doing recipe development
17:05 and trying to work on getting all of our equipment set up
17:08 for the pizzeria that will be on the floor above that
17:11 and getting our staff trained
17:13 and then finding the other staff
17:14 that we need in order to do that.
17:23 - Wow, that's amazing.
17:25 - Yeah, can you imagine the amount of faith
17:27 it must have taken to build a ministry that big?
17:30 - It must cost a lot to do that, too.
17:32 - Yeah but we serve a big God don't we?
17:34 - Yep and he can fill any need
17:36 that brings glory to his name.
17:37 - This is something that anyone could do.
17:40 I mean Ryan and Jessica didn't go to school
17:42 to learn to set up a center of influence.
17:43 They were just Bible workers.
17:45 They used their imagination.
17:46 They prayed a lot and they followed God one step at a time
17:49 to where the need was greatest.
17:50 - Yeah, and God will do the same for anyone.
17:53 We just need to take that one step of faith
17:56 and then another and another and another
17:58 and God will direct us if we don't give up.
18:01 - Mm-hmm, but moving on now,
18:03 our next adventure is the promised Thai cooking class.
18:06 - Yeah, one of our favorite restaurants
18:08 in Bangkok is May Kaidee.
18:10 We can order anything on the menu
18:11 and know that it's gonna be vegetarian.
18:13 - And the flavors are so wonderful.
18:15 I love how Thai food relies so heavily on fresh vegetables
18:18 directly from the garden with very little processed foods.
18:21 - And they use almost completely natural seasonings as well
18:27 - And they rarely use any salt.
18:29 - Yeah and May Kaidee also offers cooking classes.
18:33 And we thought we'd try it out.
18:34 So we met up with a friend Jim Katzdoor
18:37 and they thankfully let us film our experience.
18:40 - Yeah, we will be providing a couple of recipes
18:44 to go along with some dishes so you can follow along at home
18:47 and then make them for your friends and family
18:49 to remind them of the forgotten, unreached people in Asia.
18:52 - So get your pen and paper out to write down these recipes
18:55 or you can find them at MissionTREK.net.
18:59 (gentle music)

20:47 - When you mix it all in.
20:48 - But it's gonna mix into all the soup,
20:49 so it's not gonna be super concentrated.
20:51 - [Jim] Okay, three tablespoon of--
20:54 - Dry chili.
20:55 - Dry chili. - Dry chile.
20:56 - Dry chili

22:04 If you do more quickly, there's more color.
22:07 - Oh, let me try it. - If you go like this.
22:09 - Oh, okay.

22:52 (singing in foreign language)
22:54 - What is this? - Galangal.
22:56 Galangal? - It's similar to ginger,
22:58 I think.
22:59 - Do you like this? - Oh yeah.
23:00 - Oo, it smells so good.
23:01 It reminds me of something but I can't--
23:02 - [Woman] It's like an essential oil.
23:04 - Yeah, it's good.
23:06 - But you know the ginger, right.
23:07 This one ginger.
23:09 Sometimes you can cut the small one
23:10 and then you can grow it.
23:12 - This is not the ginger, this is ginger.
23:14 - Ginger, great ginger, oh yeah.
23:18 Master chef not have recipe for the cooking.
23:21 Okay, you can cook.

23:31 (singing in foreign language)
23:36 Asian hand.
23:38 - This one is enough? - Enough.
23:40 Because when you use big hand carrot,
23:42 they don't say Tom Yam Soup, they say carrot soup.
23:44 - [Jim] Oh (laughs).
23:48 - Yeah, that's fine.
23:53 Okay, so fine.

24:19 - [Mary Ann] They don't even really follow the recite 100%.
24:20 - [Cameraman] That's all right, I've been filming this for--
24:22 - It's so good.
24:24 (gentle music) (people chattering)
24:36 - [Chef] Looks good, looks like the same
24:38 as Thai restaurant now.

24:42 (gentle music) (people chattering)

24:51 (Jim sighs)
24:53 - So good.
24:59 - [Cameraman] What are you gonna make?
25:01 - Pad Thai. - Mm.

26:13 - Mm, mango sticky rice.
26:15 - [Cameraman] We're liking you so much.

26:21 - [Cameraman] So what'd you guys think of that?
26:23 - It was fun. - It was a lot of fun.
26:26 - It was nice, it was really good.
26:28 It was not so spicy at all.
26:30 - The food was good.
26:31 - The food was good.
26:32 - It was a really great experience.
26:34 Our food tastes so good even though
26:37 we have three different cooks follow the instructions.
26:40 But we followed the instructions.
26:42 I guess this is the reason why that God wants us
26:45 to obey his will, to obey his law
26:48 that whatever life that we are in,
26:51 if we obey, if we follow the ingredients
26:52 that God has for us,
26:54 what will happen is, we will have the same flavor.
26:58 We'll all taste delicious.
27:00 (gentle music)
27:04 - I hope you were able to get those recipes
27:06 but if you didn't you can visit our website
27:08 MissionTREK.net and look for them there.
27:11 - And it's definitely worth it
27:12 because the food is just as good as it looks.
27:14 - Mm-hmm, well this has been such a great show today.
27:17 - Yeah, I really miss being there
27:19 and I hope we can go back someday.
27:21 - And maybe we could start a center of influence
27:22 like that someday.
27:24 - Yeah and there are people that have gone before us
27:26 that we can learn from.
27:27 - We encourage you to read up on the methods
27:29 that others have used in reaching the cities.
27:31 - Unfortunately there is not a lot of material
27:34 out there about city ministry
27:36 because not very many people have done long term missions
27:38 in the cities.
27:39 - But we can change that.
27:41 Pray about how God can use you to reach his children
27:44 in these giant metropolises.
27:45 - We'll see you next time on MissionTREK.
27:47 - And remember to pray for the unreached cities.
27:50 (triumphant music)
