known as the Last Supper, 27:01 this is what happens. 27:02 John 13:1. 27:04 "It was just before 27:06 the Passover Feast. 27:07 Jesus knew 27:08 that the time had come 27:09 for him to leave this world 27:10 and go to the Father. 27:12 Having loved his own 27:13 who were in the world, 27:14 he now showed them 27:16 the full extent of his love. 27:18 The evening meal 27:19 was being served, 27:20 and the devil had already 27:22 prompted Judas Iscariot, 27:23 son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 27:26 Jesus knew 27:28 that the Father had put 27:29 all things under his power, 27:31 and that he had come from God 27:32 and was returning to God; 27:34 so he got up from the meal, 27:36 took off his outer clothing, and 27:37 wrapped a towel 27:38 around his waist. 27:40 After that, 27:41 he poured water into a basin 27:43 and began to wash his disciples' 27:46 feet, drying them with the towel 27:48 that was wrapped around him. 27:50 He came to Simon Peter, 27:52 who said to him, 'Lord, of the time 28:31 we tend to roll our eyes, 28:33 stare at the heavens, and say, 28:35 "How in the world 28:36 could they have done that? 28:38 How in the world could 28:39 the disciples have said that?" 28:41 I mean, think about the other 28:42 stories where the disciples 28:43 seem to put their 28:45 collective feet in their mouths. 28:47 They want to call down fire 28:48 from heaven on their "enemies" 28:50 to destroy them, right? 28:51 They argue along the road 28:52 about who's going to get 28:53 the biggest fanfare 28:54 when they get installed 28:56 in heaven's kingdom. 28:57 It's incredible because it seems 28:59 like some of their mistakes 29:02 seem eminently avoidable 29:04 with just a little reflection 29:06 and thoughtfulness 29:07 and common sense. 29:10 But if ever there were a mistake 29:12 that I readily admit I 29:14 would have made, given 29:16 the same circumstances, 29:17 it is right here 29:19 when Peter rebukes Jesus, 29:22 because from all appearances, 29:24 something is genuinely, 29:25 deeply, terribly wrong. 29:28 Think about the scene here. 29:30 This is the same Jesus who, 29:33 not that long before, 29:34 had turned a few loaves of bread 29:36 into a feast for thousands. 29:38 This is the same Jesus that can 29:41 cure blindness with His spit. 29:44 This is the same Jesus 29:46 that casts out demons, 29:47 the same Jesus 29:48 that has spoken lifetime 29:49 cripples into wholeness, 29:51 Jesus who has walked on water, 29:53 Jesus who has raised the dead. 29:54 And by now, 29:55 for most, if not all, 29:56 of his disciples, 29:57 they believe 29:58 that this is the same Jesus 29:59 that spoke 30:00 worlds into existence... 30:04 and had even, just 30:05 a short time before, 30:07 openly accepted the homage 30:09 due only to those 30:11 whom the earth serves, 30:15 not the other way around. 30:17 And here, this Jesus, 30:20 this King of kings, 30:21 this Lord of lords, 30:23 takes off His outer clothes, 30:25 picks up a servant's towel, 30:26 and washes sweat-caked dirt 30:28 off the very well-traveled feet 30:31 of His disciples. 30:34 No wonder Peter is offended. 30:37 And not merely for himself. 30:39 No, he was offended on behalf 30:40 of His master, the one who 30:42 never, ever deserved 30:44 to have to serve in such a way. 30:50 And, of course, right here is 30:51 the heart of the matter, 30:51 isn't it? 30:54 You see, Peter was offended 30:55 for the honor of Christ, 30:57 because in his mind, 30:58 service to others 30:59 of this magnitude 31:00 was below Christ's status. 31:03 I mean, washing muddy feet, 31:05 this was not something you did 31:06 because you were a king 31:06 or a prince. 31:07 No, it was rather something 31:09 that you did because you were 31:10 a slave, a servant, 31:12 someone who, in people's minds 31:14 back then, supposedly 31:15 didn't deserve any better. 31:20 In other words, in Peter 31:23 and the disciples' minds, 31:24 that's what service was. 31:27 It was a punishment for those 31:30 who could not 31:31 or would not better themselves. 31:39 And to that Jesus responds, 31:43 "Not so." 31:47 John 13 again, verse 8. 31:51 Peter says, "No, 31:54 you shall never wash my feet." 31:56 "Jesus answered, 31:58 'Unless I wash you, 32:01 you have no part with me.'" 32:03 And then the turnstile 32:05 that at times was Peter. 32:07 "'Then, Lord,' 32:08 Simon Peter replied, 32:09 'not just my feet but my hands 32:11 and my head as well.' 32:14 Jesus answered, 'A person 32:16 who has had a bath needs only 32:17 to wash his feet; 32:18 his whole body is finished washing 32:31 their feet, 32:32 he put on his clothes 32:33 and returned to his place. 32:35 'Do you understand what 32:37 I have done for you?' 32:39 he asked them. 32:41 'You call me "Teacher" and 32:43 "Lord," and rightly so, 32:45 for that is what I am. 32:47 Now that I, 32:48 your Lord and Teacher, 32:49 have washed your feet, 32:51 you also should wash 32:52 one another's greater 33:02 than the one who sent him. 33:04 Now that you know these things, 33:06 you will 33:07 be blessed if you do them.'" 33:15 And from this 33:16 and the preceding verses 33:17 in chapter 13, 33:19 we learn at least two things. 33:21 First, when Jesus served 33:25 His disciples 33:26 in so dramatic a fashion, 33:28 He wasn't doing so in spite 33:32 of His divinity and greatness. 33:34 He was doing it because of His 33:36 divinity and greatness, 33:39 because that is what divinity 33:41 and true greatness really do. 33:42 They lead one to serve. 33:46 This is exactly what 33:47 Jesus is seeking to point out 33:49 to His disciples earlier, 33:50 where we read in chapter 13. 33:51 Jesus said that He knew 33:53 that the Father had 33:53 given Him this power. 33:55 He knew that He had come from 33:56 God, that He was returning 33:57 to God. 33:58 He is in full understanding 33:59 of His divinity and His power. 34:02 And because of those things, 34:05 He served. 34:07 He wasn't stooping. 34:10 He was just doing what God does. 34:16 And second, the type of service 34:19 that Jesus modeled 34:21 is indeed the same type of 34:23 service we are to do for others, 34:25 not in spite of our 34:26 Christianity, but because of it. 34:29 For service 34:31 is what Christians do. 34:37 You know, I can't guarantee 34:38 that the next time 34:39 you get on the phone 34:40 with customer service 34:41 that it's going to be a pleasant 34:42 and efficient conversation. 34:45 I can't guarantee 34:46 that the next time 34:47 you go to a restaurant 34:49 that you will get 34:50 excellent customer service. 34:54 However, today, 34:57 as we prepare 34:59 in just a few moments 35:00 to wash one another's feet, 35:02 let us remember 35:04 that it was our Lord Jesus 35:06 who first washed our feet, 35:08 that Peter was indeed thus 35:10 offended on behalf of his 35:12 master. 35:13 And if that be an offense, 35:16 let us never forget 35:17 that it is an offense well worth 35:20 repeating over and over 35:22 and over again 35:24 as we serve others. 35:28 May the service of Christ 35:31 be in your heart 35:33 and your hands in abundance 35:36 today and until He returns. 35:41 Let me pray with you. 35:45 Jesus, this view of service 35:48 is different today, 35:49 much in the same way 35:50 as it was back then. 35:53 Oh, we may put on the front page 35:54 and the headlines, Lord, those 35:56 that do extraordinary service. 35:58 But, Lord, our society is a 35:59 selfish one because we are 36:00 selfish beings. 36:02 Please grow in us 36:05 this kind of service 36:06 that You illustrated 36:08 so well 2,000 years ago. 36:10 May we truly serve others 36:12 as You would 36:13 if You were in our place. 36:16 We ask this in Your name. 36:19 Amen. 41:23 >> And
