23:02 They've been around 23:03 from almost the beginning 23:05 of the Christian church 23:06 in the first century. 23:08 We hear them a lot. 23:09 And there's a reason 23:10 why these words have been 23:12 around for so long. 23:13 Because it is a perpetual need 23:15 of the Christian 23:17 to maintain a revived life. 23:20 But so often we don't, 23:22 and so the call comes out. 23:23 "Wake up, O sleeper, 23:25 you need to be born again. 23:26 You need to rise up 23:27 from the spiritual grave." 23:28 And that call for revival 23:30 comes down even to our day, 23:32 unless we forget 23:34 the verbiage God uses. 23:35 Turn to Revelation chapter 3, 23:36 please. 23:38 Revelation chapter 3:14. 23:43 Page 825 in your red pew Bible. 23:44 825, Revelation chapter 3, 23:46 beginning with verse 14. 23:48 Here we find the seventh 23:49 in a series of seven messages 23:50 to "the churches." 23:53 Revelation chapter 2 and 3, 23:54 they have these seven messages 23:56 to seven churches, 23:57 and indeed there were 23:58 real churches by these names 24:00 back in those days. 24:01 And undoubtedly 24:02 these messages meant something 24:03 specific to them. 24:04 There's also an interpretation, 24:06 which I believe to be correct, 24:07 where these seven messages 24:08 are also applied 24:10 to the entire lifetime 24:12 of the Christian church, 24:12 throughout the Christian era, 24:14 different phases of growth. 24:16 And the last phase, 24:18 the one that we're in right now 24:20 is what the seventh 24:21 letter refers to. 24:24 It's a letter to the church 24:25 of Laodicea, 24:26 and this is what it says. 24:26 Verse 14 -- "To the angel 24:28 of the church in Laodicea write: 24:30 These are the words of the 24:31 Amen, the faithful and true 24:33 witness, the ruler of God's 24:36 creation." 24:36 In other words, 24:37 the words of Jesus. 24:39 I know your deeds, 24:40 that you are 24:41 neither cold nor hot. 24:44 I wish you were 24:45 either one or the other!" 24:48 You see, in those days, 24:49 cold water could be 24:50 used to cool your thirst, 24:51 quench your thirst. 24:52 Hot water could be used 24:52 for medicinal purposes, 24:53 for bathing, for cleaning, 24:54 et cetera. 24:55 But if you were lukewarm, 24:56 what could be done with you? 24:57 Verse 16 -- 24:58 "So, because you are lukewarm, 25:00 neither hot nor cold, I am about 25:02 to spit you out of my mouth. 25:04 You say, 'I am rich. 25:06 I have acquired wealth 25:07 and do not need a thing.' 25:10 But you do not realize 25:11 that you are wretched, pitiful, 25:13 poor, blind, and naked. 25:17 I counsel you to buy from me 25:20 gold refined in the fire 25:22 so you can become rich." 25:24 Some have said this is 25:24 faith that works, applied faith. 25:28 "I counsel you and white clothes 25:30 to wear so that you can cover 25:31 your shameful nakedness." 25:32 Some have said this is 25:33 the righteousness of Christ. 25:34 "And salve to put on your eyes 25:36 so you can see." 25:38 Some have said this is the oil 25:39 of the Holy Spirit. 25:41 "Those whom I love 25:42 I rebuke and discipline. 25:44 So be earnest and repent. 25:48 Here I am! 25:49 I stand at the door and knock. 25:52 If anyone hears my voice 25:54 and opens the door, 25:56 I will come in and eat with him, 25:57 and he with me. 25:58 To him who overcomes, 26:00 I will give the right to sit 26:01 with me on my throne, 26:02 just as I overcame and sat down 26:04 with my father on his throne. 26:05 He who has an ear, 26:07 let him hear what the Spirit 26:09 says to the churches." 26:17 All of this reveals 26:18 at least three key realities. 26:20 Number one -- 26:22 God has incredible, 26:23 even miraculous things 26:25 in store for his church. 26:27 The future is bright, 26:28 ladies and gentlemen. 26:29 The future of the church 26:30 is bright. 26:30 Great things. 26:31 We are on the cusp 26:33 of great things happening. 26:35 Number two -- 26:36 But we can only be part 26:38 of those miraculous times 26:40 if we are spiritually alive. 26:43 Spiritual corpses 26:45 need not apply. 26:47 It's not that God doesn't love 26:49 those that are spiritual 26:50 corpses. 26:50 He loves them deeply. 26:51 He gave his life for them. 26:52 But they are not eligible, 26:53 as we will see, for 26:54 these final events. 26:55 They cannot participate because 26:56 they are spiritually dead. 26:59 And number three -- 27:01 and as Bible history clearly 27:02 shows, we can be spiritually 27:04 sick or even spiritually dead 27:05 and not even know it. 27:10 Do you remember what 27:11 Nicodemus' response was 27:13 when Jesus got done with 27:14 the first round of explaining 27:15 about this new 27:16 spiritual life that he needed? 27:17 Jesus explains it all 27:18 and talks about the imagery, 27:20 being born again, et cetera. 27:21 And Nicodemus' response is, 27:23 "How can these things be?" 27:27 Even he, a good man, 27:30 did not know of his lack. 27:35 Such is the nature of our 27:36 spiritual stupor so often. 27:38 We are numbed to the reality 27:39 of our own hearts. 27:43 So, this morning, 27:44 I'd like us to ask and answer 27:45 two questions about revival. 27:47 Number one -- 27:48 first question is, what is it? 27:50 What is revival? 27:52 What does it mean 27:54 to be revived in Christ? 27:56 Well, to answer this question, 27:57 I want to do something 27:58 a little bit different. 27:59 I want to work backwards. 28:00 I want to go backwards at it 28:02 to help us to see what it is. 28:04 In other words, 28:05 what does someone 28:06 who is not revived look like? 28:10 How does someone who is 28:11 not revived in Christ act? 28:14 And this will help us 28:15 to see what revival actually is. 28:18 I'm indebted to two individuals, 28:19 R.O. Roberts and 28:21 Sherry Henderson. 28:22 Independently, they compiled 28:23 a list after 28:24 extensive Bible study 28:26 to kind of summarize 28:28 what are the signs potentially 28:31 that a person 28:32 would need revival. 28:34 I've taken their list, 28:35 and I've shrunk them down here. 28:36 We're going to quickly go 28:38 through 20 little bullet points. 28:39 Now, we're going to move 28:40 through them fairly swiftly, 28:41 but I my prayer is, 28:43 truly, please, take 28:45 these questions seriously. 28:47 Let them be windows 28:49 into your heart. 28:49 Nobody's going to know 28:50 what your answer is. 28:51 This is between you and the 28:51 Lord. 28:53 But think carefully 28:54 as we go through these questions 28:55 to see whether or not perhaps 28:56 you may need revival. 29:42 In other words, exciting, 29:43 engaging, you know, 29:44 keeping your attention. 32:34 These are sobering questions, 32:35 aren't they? 32:39 And I wonder -- I wonder if, 32:42 in light of what we have seen 32:44 so far, if it might be helpful 32:47 if we did an actual survey 32:49 of those present here. 32:51 It's an anonymous survey. 32:53 Your name will not be attached 32:54 to it. 32:55 But if you have a phone, 32:57 would you pull it out, please? 32:58 Normally we pastors, 33:00 we like your phones 33:01 to stay nicely tucked away 33:02 during a sermon, 33:03 but I'm actually asking you 33:05 to bring it out right now 33:06 because I would like you 33:06 to do a texting survey. 33:09 Again, this is an anonymous 33:09 survey. 33:10 Your answers will 33:11 not be connected with you. 33:12 We're not going to come back 33:13 and ask you 33:14 why you answered thus and such. 33:15 You can text this word, 33:17 "aupolls460," to 37607. 33:22 So you pull out your phone, 33:23 you open up your texting app, 33:25 and you type in "aupolls460" 33:28 to that number, 37607. 33:31 If you do that, you'll get 33:33 a little message back, 33:34 and then depending 33:35 upon your platform, 33:36 on subsequent answers, 33:37 which I'll explain how to do 33:38 in just a moment, 33:39 you may or may not receive 33:40 an answer back, 33:41 but you are in the queue. 33:43 There are 10 questions 33:44 that elder Don MacLafferty, 33:46 who's going to be with us 33:46 this next week, 33:47 whom you just met 33:47 a few moments ago -- 33:49 he has put together this survey. 33:50 He's given it in a wide range of 33:52 places, and this morning 33:54 we would like to do it 33:55 for those of you that are here. 33:56 Those of you 33:57 that are watching online 33:57 right now, 33:58 you are also welcome 33:59 to take part in this survey. 34:01 If you're watching this later 34:02 as a recording, 34:03 the survey is closed, so you 34:04 don't have to worry about that. 34:05 There are 10 questions. 34:07 Each of the questions 34:08 has only two possible answers. 34:10 Yes or no, not a Y or an N, 34:13 but the actual words 34:14 "yes" or "no." 34:15 If you do anything else, 34:16 it will not register 34:17 with the technology 34:19 or with the platform 34:19 that we're using. 34:20 So, I'm going to take about 20 34:22 seconds for each one of the 34:23 questions. 34:24 That'll give our technology time 34:25 to collate and you time to 34:26 answer. 34:27 When I move to the next 34:29 question, the previous 34:30 question will be closed. 34:31 So, if you try to answer too 34:32 soon or whatnot, 34:34 it'll send you a message back. 34:35 So, everybody's clear? 34:36 If you don't have a phone, 34:37 you can go to the URL 34:38 PollEv.com/aupolls460, 34:42 and there is a concurrent survey 34:45 that will be taking place there. 34:46 We're going to share with you 34:47 the results of this survey 34:49 in just a few minutes. 34:50 So, it's anonymous. 34:54 Tell God the truth. 34:56 Let's see what's -- 34:57 Let's take our temperature, 34:59 spiritually speaking, 35:00 with these 10 questions. 35:09 Yes or no? 35:11 Just those two answers. 35:12 Y-e-s or n-o. 35:35 Now, notice what it's asking. 35:36 It's not asking if you feel, 35:38 "I'm going to march right into 35:38 the kingdom. 35:39 I'm so good, God's going to have 35:40 to let me in." 35:41 No, that's not what we're 35:41 asking. 35:42 Do you have peace 35:44 about your salvation 35:45 by the grace of Jesus Christ 35:46 through faith 35:47 in Him and Him alone? 35:48 That's what it's asking. 35:49 Yes or no? 35:57 And by the way, again, 35:58 if you don't get a response back 35:59 after each one of your 36:00 questions, that's all right. 36:01 Just keep sending your answers. 36:02 It will automatically go 36:04 only to the question that's 36:05 open, even if you don't see 36:06 a response back on your screen. 36:09 Number three, do you have -- 36:11 and notice carefully here -- 36:12 daily, meaningful, 36:15 unrushed time alone with God 36:17 in His written Word? 36:19 So, it's a very specific 36:20 question. 36:21 Do you have daily, meaningful, 36:24 unrushed -- Maybe that's the 36:25 most difficult qualifier on 36:27 there -- unrushed time 36:28 alone with God 36:29 in His written Word? 36:30 Yes or no? 36:46 So, not just Bible study. 36:47 Now we're asking 36:48 specifically about prayer. 36:49 Do you have daily, meaningful 36:51 unrushed time in prayer? 36:54 Y-e-s or n-o, yes or no? 37:16 Yeah, the first time I saw that 37:17 question some months ago, 37:18 I chuckled, too. 37:19 Well done, Don. Well done. 37:21 Electronics can be a noose 37:22 around our neck, can't they, 37:22 sometimes? 37:29 Yes or no? 37:50 Again, there's no one 37:50 to impress here. 37:51 We're just looking 37:52 for honest answers. 37:52 We want 37:53 an honest assessment here. 38:10 Yes or no? 38:22 Number eight. 38:25 This is for those of you 38:26 that are living with 38:27 other family members. 38:28 We know that there may be some 38:28 of you that are not, 38:29 so this is for maybe a smaller 38:31 subset here. 38:32 When you are home with them, 38:34 do you have daily worship 38:36 together? 38:37 When you are home with your 38:38 family, do you have 38:39 daily worship together? 38:51 Number nine, are you free 38:54 from anything 38:55 that would make you a slave? 38:57 And then we have some examples 38:57 here such as bitterness, 38:59 addictions, electronics, 39:00 porn, appetite, et cetera. 39:02 Are you free from anything 39:04 that would make you a slave? 39:06 Really important question. 39:07 What's your honest answer 39:09 to that -- yes or no? 39:18 And lastly, question number 10. 39:34 Yes or no? 39:44 And with that, 39:45 we're going to close the survey. 39:47 As I said in just a few moments 39:49 here, we're going to share 39:50 with you the results of that. 39:51 But while they're being 39:52 tabulated 39:53 and put in a presentable form, 39:55 let me just point 39:55 something out here. 39:58 Being spiritually ill 40:00 or spiritually dead 40:02 is a serious thing. 40:05 You know, so often in the world 40:07 today, Christianity 40:07 is treated very tritely. 40:09 You know, it's the butt 40:10 of the joke. 40:11 You know, people that are 40:12 Christians are often seen as 40:14 kind of cranks and fanatics. 40:15 And, yeah, there are some 40:15 of those in here, but I've seen 40:17 some pretty cranky atheists, 40:18 too, in my day. 40:19 Christianity is often 40:20 not taken very seriously, 40:22 but if you are a Christian, 40:23 you know the truth. 40:24 There is no question 40:25 more important than what 40:27 you will do with Jesus Christ. 40:29 Nothing. 40:30 Not who you marry, 40:31 not what job you do, 40:33 not where you live. 40:34 All those things are important, 40:34 but none of them 40:35 are so important as to 40:36 what you do or do not do 40:37 with Jesus Christ. 40:38 The quality of your relationship 40:40 with Jesus, whether you know him 40:42 or not, will affect every single 40:44 thing about your life, 40:46 no exceptions. 40:47 It will affect who you marry. 40:49 It will affect the job 40:50 that you take or don't take. 40:51 It will affect 40:51 where you live or don't live. 40:52 It will affect what you eat, 40:54 how you speak, what 40:55 you listen to, what you see. 40:57 A relationship with Jesus 40:59 affects everything. 41:01 And if we are spiritually sick, 41:04 if we are spiritually dead, 41:06 it will affect everything. 41:08 Again, whether we know it or 41:10 not, it affects everything 41:12 in our lives, 41:15 which, strangely enough, 41:16 brings us to 41:17 an interesting conclusion. 41:18 We can now answer 41:20 the question of what 41:21 does it mean to be revived? 41:24 You know, we've done 41:25 an interesting exercise here. 41:26 We've kind of gone 41:27 and looked at the reversed image 41:28 of it here. 41:29 Well, what's the truth? 41:31 Well, revival is a spiritual 41:33 awakening. 41:35 It is a renewal of one's first 41:37 love experience with Christ. 41:39 It's when new life comes back in 41:41 and the old dullness goes away. 41:43 When we are revived, 41:45 we are engaged in our faith. 41:47 When we are revived, 41:48 we are in communication 41:49 regularly with God. 41:50 When we are revived, 41:52 we are sharing our faith 41:53 with other people. 41:54 n short, when we are revived, 41:56 to be revived means 42:01 that we are alive in Christ. 42:03 We are alive in Jesus. 42:07 Do we understand that this is 42:09 what we were created for? 42:11 In the Garden of Eden, 42:12 we were created for nothing less 42:13 than this intimate, close 42:15 relationship with Jesus Christ. 42:17 That's what we're wired for. 42:18 And since the fall, 42:20 we are forever lost. 42:21 Apart from Jesus, 42:23 we're forever lost in this 42:24 shadow, this echo of what 42:25 we were meant to be. 42:27 And yet when we come to Christ, 42:29 all of the pieces 42:31 begin to fall into place. 42:33 I'm not saying life has 42:34 no troubles to it. 42:34 Sometimes there's 42:35 even more troubles 42:36 after you accept Jesus Christ. 42:37 But you have 42:37 peace in spite of it. 42:39 You have this strength 42:40 that rises above the storm. 42:41 You have a connection 42:43 with the most powerful being 42:44 in all of the universe. 42:45 And He loves you 42:46 and gave His life for you. 42:47 How do you get 42:47 any better than that? 42:49 To be revived means to be 42:51 in a relationship 42:52 with Jesus Christ. 42:56 Now, the crew tells me 42:57 that the answers are ready here. 42:58 Let's go back and see what 43:01 the answers are here. 43:03 The question number one was... 43:07 96%, yes. 43:09 Amen. 47:51 How can we become revived? 47:56 Well, there's all kinds 47:57 of things that we could say 47:57 about that, but given I have 48:00 only a few seconds left, 48:02 I'm going to limit myself here 48:03 to just two steps, two steps 48:05 that I would gently suggest. 48:06 If you want to be revived, 48:08 take these two steps. 48:10 Step number one -- 48:11 attend the MORE + Conference. 48:16 That's cheating, isn't it?
