00:01 Hi, and welcome to 3ABN Sabbath School Panel.
00:02 I'm Kenny Shelton.
00:04 I am really thrilled that you decided to join us today.
00:07 You're gonna see that is quite an exciting lesson.
00:09 We're going to be in lesson number 10.
00:10 So get everything ready if you've got it.
00:12 And we're going to be on lesson number 10,
00:13 which talks about Remember, Do Not Forget.
00:17 And so we want to be sure to remember today,
00:19 we're gonna remember you in prayer,
00:20 we want you to remember us in prayer
00:21 as we move forward on this lesson
00:23 'cause I believe the Holy Spirit's
00:24 gonna be poured out in a wonderful way.
00:26 You know, you may not have the study guides.
00:27 And so we want to encourage you to do that.
00:29 We always mentioned here two different ways
00:31 you can do that.
00:32 You can go to the nearest Seventh-day Adventist Church
00:34 and get your guides
00:35 or you can download those if you'd like to go
00:37 to absg.adventist.org
00:40 You can get your set.
00:42 I know it's a little bit late lesson number 10,
00:44 but you can always have to study with somebody else.
00:46 Again, we're glad you joined us.
00:47 We look forward to spiritual time together
00:49 and we'll see you in just a minute.
01:21 Thank you again for joining us here on lesson number 10.
01:24 Get everything that you need.
01:25 That means, you need your Bible,
01:27 you need pencil, paper, jot things down.
01:29 Some of us go pretty quick on some of these,
01:31 a lot to cover in 10 minutes that we each have that again,
01:35 we're glad you're here with us.
01:36 And I'm excited about it.
01:38 I know Lord's gonna do great things here today for us.
01:41 I want to introduce our panel here quickly.
01:43 To my left is Brother James Rafferty, always good.
01:46 Good to have you.
01:47 Good to be here, Kenny, always
01:48 looking forward to the lesson concerning
01:50 the days that are passed is Monday's lesson that I got.
01:52 Yeah, praise the Lord. Look forward to that.
01:54 And to your left Brother Ryan Day.
01:56 Praise the Lord is my buddy. Praise the Lord.
01:58 Hey, you're my brother. All right.
02:00 Come on. It's good to be here.
02:01 It's right. Right.
02:02 To your left Sister Shelley Quinn.
02:04 I'm so thrilled to be here.
02:06 I'm excited that you are joining us
02:08 as we get into a little more detail,
02:11 a little more depth in Deuteronomy.
02:13 Yeah. Good.
02:14 And to you left, Sister Jill Morikone.
02:16 Thank you, Pastor Kenny, privileged to be here
02:18 and open up God's Word.
02:19 Yeah, it seems like we go through,
02:21 but we look at it every week,
02:23 we go through this kind of same type,
02:24 but you know what, new people, I'm banking on it.
02:27 I believe God's bringing new people all the time
02:29 they're joining in on the study.
02:31 And so it's a necessity that we go through
02:33 and can introduce ourselves,
02:34 so they know who maybe they're listening to and so on
02:36 so forth.
02:37 Anyway, lesson number 10. We're going to have prayer.
02:39 And we can't do anything without prayer.
02:41 Amen. It would be silly to even try.
02:43 If we didn't pray and ask the Holy Spirit,
02:44 we might as well go home, isn't that right?
02:46 Brother James, how about you? Would you pray for us please?
02:47 Absolutely. Let's pray.
02:49 Father, we're thankful for who You are.
02:52 And how You revealed Yourself in this present truth Book
02:55 of Deuteronomy, the favorite book of Christ,
02:57 most quoted by Christ, and we're learning a lot,
03:00 we want to continue to learn.
03:01 So send Your Holy Spirit to teach us,
03:03 to guide us, to direct us, to convict us, to comfort us,
03:05 we ask for ourselves and for our viewers,
03:07 we ask in Jesus' name.
03:08 Amen. Amen.
03:10 Praise the Lord. Good.
03:11 So in our lesson, let's go to the Sabbath
03:12 afternoon part, we're gonna go to our memory text.
03:15 I like this memory text here a little bit long,
03:18 Deuteronomy 9:7, so I'm gonna ask Sister Jill,
03:20 she'll read it for me please. Sure.
03:21 Absolutely. "Remember!
03:23 Do not forget how you provoked the Lord
03:25 your God to wrath in the wilderness.
03:27 From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt
03:29 until you came to this place,
03:32 you have been rebellious against the Lord."
03:36 You know, just those last words cause me a little concern
03:40 and cringe just a little bit, you know,
03:42 how wonderful it be
03:43 if we're just happy in the Lord and we're gonna follow
03:46 and obey His voice,
03:47 and throughout all these lessons wanted
03:49 to bring us closer to Jesus Christ,
03:50 but notice those last words
03:52 and we'll try to remember, right?
03:54 We don't forget these
03:55 so that we don't fall in that same trap.
03:57 You know, on this Sabbath afternoon's lesson,
04:00 I'm gonna just read it basically out
04:01 of the lesson book that we have here
04:04 because it talks about the two words here.
04:06 It's very important, they're simple words,
04:07 but there's important it says, "remember,"
04:11 and then "forget."
04:13 Two words in Scripture, remember, and then forget.
04:16 And I don't know about you,
04:18 but I've heard that a few times in my life,
04:20 Kenny, you better remember, and so anyway.
04:22 Both refer to something that humanness
04:24 is in here, right?
04:26 And happens in our mind.
04:27 So I like what he says.
04:28 He says here, "To remember is not to forget,
04:32 and to forget is not to remember."
04:35 That just makes sense.
04:37 It's like wherever I go, there I am, right?
04:39 Okay, good.
04:41 Jesus tells His people to remember
04:42 all the things that He's done for them.
04:44 So and Deuteronomy has been good.
04:46 We're always reminded of the goodness of God.
04:49 And He does tell us
04:50 the things that He does for us that He is doing for us.
04:53 And so therefore we owe him our allegiance,
04:55 there's no doubt again.
04:56 We don't want to forget.
04:58 Sometimes we forget to praise Him.
04:59 I don't know if you ever do that.
05:01 Sometimes... He does so many good things every day.
05:03 And I like that song that says Count Your Blessings.
05:06 Name them one by one.
05:07 So often we're not counting the blessings.
05:09 We're just kind of going over
05:10 the things that maybe we didn't like
05:12 what happened or we're not sure of it,
05:14 and we doing more griping than we are praising.
05:16 And I think more we praise
05:19 the less things will happen that we can gripe about, right?
05:21 When you have a right mind and right attitude.
05:23 So this week's lesson, this is interesting.
05:25 We're gonna express this in Deuteronomy,
05:27 we'll look at this important principle, notice,
05:30 of remembering
05:32 and not forgetting God's interaction in our lives.
05:36 I'm thankful I'm so very grateful
05:38 and thankful that God interacts with us.
05:42 What if you could never hear from Him?
05:43 What if you can never talk to Him?
05:44 You never pray, you never study,
05:46 it'd be sad, but we can interact, He interacts.
05:48 He's interested in us. Praise God for that.
05:51 Okay, I'm gonna start Sunday's lesson
05:54 if we'll just turn there quickly.
05:55 Sunday's lesson, Remembering the Rainbow.
05:58 What is it all about
05:59 when you talk about the rainbow?
06:00 I like that. It's all good.
06:02 The rainbow.
06:04 Now few things here in Genesis Chapter 9.
06:07 For the first time the words remember appears.
06:11 That's kind of interesting. Remember, Genesis 9:15.
06:15 He says, "I will remember My covenant,"
06:18 notice that, "which is between Me and you,"
06:22 notice this, "every living creature of all flesh,
06:25 and the water shall no more become a flood
06:27 to destroy all flesh."
06:29 I like it when He says I will remember My covenant.
06:33 So remember, then is a very important word simple
06:37 as it might be, remember is very, very important.
06:39 And God assures us of that when He says
06:41 to remember, especially when God's involved.
06:45 If God is involved, and He says remember,
06:46 it behooves us to remember. I don't know.
06:50 At first He ask us to remember His promises,
06:53 He ask us to remember His warnings.
06:56 And He also ask us to remember
06:58 how He deals with people.
07:00 So I need to remember all of those things,
07:02 and always relate a lot of times
07:04 to things that when I grew up, like most people,
07:06 when we grow up, there's things that that just
07:08 indelibly is on our mind, you know,
07:10 and it was one of those things when I was growing up,
07:13 a list of few things was given to me every day to do.
07:16 My dad felt if I was busy, I would get in less trouble.
07:19 You know, so he wanted me to stay out of trouble,
07:20 so he'd give me a list of things to do.
07:22 But every time I don't know why,
07:25 there's always a warning that was given to me.
07:27 It wasn't just given here, I think I probably know why,
07:30 but a warning was given to me that...
07:32 Now what did I tell you to do?
07:33 And so we have to kind of repeat what he said.
07:36 So there's no mistake on it.
07:38 And if I didn't answer quickly enough,
07:40 it was repeated.
07:42 So that there'd be no mistake.
07:45 He said that so often, I want you to know,
07:47 repeat it, so I know there's no mistake.
07:49 I told you, I know you understand.
07:51 Now that's my earthly, right?
07:54 But there's some comparisons with our Heavenly Father.
07:57 Sure enough, once in a while,
07:59 believe it or not I forgot.
08:01 And so, well, I heard about it,
08:02 and then would he...
08:04 It would come with same old question.
08:06 Kenny, didn't you hear what I asked you to do?
08:09 And I said, "Well, yeah."
08:12 My answer was always yes.
08:13 I couldn't lie 'cause then we had a little conversation.
08:16 So I said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did.
08:17 I did, but I didn't remember until now."
08:22 I thought it might work. It never worked.
08:26 I thought it would work right then and there.
08:27 I was hoping for mercy.
08:29 Lord, have mercy, Lord, let Dad have mercy on me.
08:32 There was no mercy. Every time is going...
08:35 What?
08:36 You know, so, you know, we have to remember,
08:39 what was the right thing to do?
08:41 I had to remember so I wouldn't forget.
08:45 And so he kind of leaving some things out there for me.
08:48 And, you know, my response was always the same.
08:51 "Yeah, Dad, I did remember, but I forgot for that time."
08:53 And he said, "Yes, I understand."
08:55 At the same time, he's drawing his belt out.
08:59 You could hear...
09:01 Oh, here it comes, belt's come into view well,
09:04 and you know what he said,
09:06 "Maybe this will help you to remember."
09:10 Now some people say...
09:11 Let me tell you that did kind of help me to remember.
09:14 I can tell you that right now.
09:15 You're dancing around and you think you're on fire.
09:17 You're looking for nearest pond to jump into,
09:19 you know what I'm talking about?
09:21 Genesis...
09:22 Maybe you remember next time.
09:23 Genesis 9:13 says,
09:26 "I do set my bow in the cloud,
09:30 and it shall be a token of the covenant."
09:33 I like that.
09:35 And Genesis 9:16 says,
09:36 "And the bow shall be in the cloud,
09:39 and I will look up on it, that I may," what?
09:42 "I may remember."
09:43 Now that was kind of interesting, isn't it?
09:47 God said, "I'm gonna set my bow up there.
09:49 And I will remember."
09:51 I didn't ever think that He would forget,
09:53 you know, so I'm saying, "Well,
09:54 why do you put that up there?
09:56 We remember what He had promised,
09:57 why did He put the rainbow up there for us?"
09:59 Praise God for that may be simple some,
10:01 but He put it up there for us so that we would understand
10:05 what He was doing.
10:06 He was saying, what about those people?
10:08 I've asked myself that question.
10:09 What about the people who heard about the flood?
10:13 You know, earth pretty well wiped out except for eight.
10:16 What if that promise wasn't there?
10:19 Every time they heard the lightning
10:21 and they felt the rain drop, they heard,
10:23 you know, they bound to have heard the stories, right,
10:25 over and over about the flood, so on and so forth.
10:28 But what encouragement
10:30 I'm sure that gave some at least,
10:31 that there was a rainbow in the sky, was a promise,
10:34 was a covenant that God made.
10:36 I'm not going to have to flood the earth again with water.
10:39 Praise the Lord for that.
10:41 A bow in the heavens represents God's love for us,
10:45 going around the world.
10:47 I like that connecting men with God.
10:50 And it shows us
10:52 that He's looking up on His token
10:53 of the covenant and He's going to remember
10:55 the promises to us.
10:57 Again, He says in Genesis 9:11,
10:59 "I will look upon it," what? "That I may remember."
11:04 Isn't God's so good, isn't He?
11:05 Say, now you remember, then you know I told you,
11:08 He just set to put up there so I will remember.
11:10 What a God we serve. Promise is still good today.
11:13 Genesis 9:9 says, notice this, it said,
11:16 "Behold, I establish my covenant with you,
11:19 and I will send," notice, "your seed after you."
11:22 Notice, many scientists reject
11:25 the idea there ever was a worldwide flood.
11:28 You read some of those things, it's kind of interesting.
11:30 They rejected that there's a worldwide flood.
11:32 Ellen White wrote that before the flood came
11:34 many people believed that the laws of nature
11:39 ruled out the possibility of a worldwide flood.
11:42 Interesting.
11:43 That could happen.
11:45 So here's what some of the wise men did.
11:46 Patriarchs and Prophets 97 says it.
11:48 Always got the smarties that come along.
11:49 People know some things they think.
11:51 Notice, they said,
11:52 "The laws are so firmly established that God Himself
11:57 could not change them."
11:59 Little overstepping the bounds there just a little bit, right?
12:01 So one group would say something like,
12:04 before the flood he said, it couldn't happen.
12:06 Then you had based on the laws of nature,
12:08 it just couldn't happen.
12:10 Then you have another group that said,
12:11 based on the laws of nature, it really never happened.
12:16 So it gets a little more confusing,
12:17 you know, as we go along with it there,
12:19 but praise God for that bow, the bow of promise.
12:22 Remember, you know, it's a good word,
12:25 remember, again,
12:27 what was the purpose of the rainbow,
12:28 keep it in mind as we go through this study.
12:30 It was to help the people remember the covenant.
12:34 Help them to remember what God had promised.
12:37 Every time we see a rainbow in the sky.
12:38 I love to see.
12:40 Let's get back to rain, you see a rainbow up in there.
12:42 Right there you go right back into your mind,
12:44 God has promised.
12:45 God's promise that it's not...
12:47 And, you know, some of the things
12:48 that are happening in the world today, you say,
12:49 wow, so much,
12:51 you know, the flooding and different things,
12:52 but in different localities, but it's not a worldwide flood,
12:56 that rainbow in the sky
12:58 should remind us that God's judgment upon
13:01 the world because of sin.
13:03 And then also that He promises not to flood it again.
13:06 I say this you can count on God's promises.
13:08 There's no doubt about whatever God promises you,
13:11 I'll tell you, you can just write,
13:12 claim those by the grace of God.
13:13 Maybe that's why we don't see a lot of things
13:15 that may be happening in the world today.
13:16 We just fail maybe to reach out
13:18 and by faith just grab hold of those promises
13:20 and said God...
13:21 And I've said to Him, and I know you have to say
13:23 you said, right?
13:25 Not trying to be pushy or bossy just you
13:27 said in Your Word.
13:29 And because you said it I agree with it.
13:31 And I believe it. Ezekiel 1:28.
13:33 Last passage here, notice 1:28,
13:36 "As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day
13:39 of rain, so was the appearance,
13:41 no was appearance in brightness around about the throne.
13:45 That was the appearance of the likeness
13:47 of the glory of Jehovah."
13:49 Isn't that beautiful?
13:51 Getting picture right in our mind about that glory.
13:54 So what we need to do is to look at things
13:56 for today and say, you know, Lord,
13:58 I don't want to forget,
13:59 no things that we'll get into.
14:01 I don't want to forget what you said in here.
14:02 I don't want to forget the promises that you have made.
14:04 I don't want to forget,
14:05 I want to remember
14:07 Lord's Sabbath day to keep it holy.
14:09 So we just want to remember
14:11 what God has said in His Word.
14:12 He said you remember those things
14:13 and I'll cause you to ride on the high places
14:16 of the earth.
14:17 And I tell you by the grace of God,
14:19 I'm ready to ride on the high places of the earth.
14:21 Brother James? Amen.
14:23 Amen. Thank you, Kenny.
14:24 That was a blessing.
14:26 My name is Pastor James Rafferty,
14:27 and we are looking at Concerning
14:30 the Days That Are Past in Monday's lesson on the week,
14:35 Do Not Forget.
14:38 And we be in here in Deuteronomy Chapter 4,
14:40 it opens up here and it says,
14:43 "In Deuteronomy Chapter 4,
14:44 we have read wonderful admonitions that the Lord gave
14:47 to His people through Moses
14:48 regarding their great privileges
14:49 as God's chosen people.
14:51 He had redeemed them out of Egypt."
14:55 And we're quoting Deuteronomy Chapter 4
14:56 now verse 34, "By trials, by signs,
14:59 by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand
15:02 by an outstretched arm, by great terrors,
15:05 according to all that the Lord your God
15:07 did for you in Egypt before your eyes."
15:09 And when we think about this,
15:11 it's so powerful because Deuteronomy
15:14 Chapter 4 is kind of a reminder before we repeat
15:17 The Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy Chapter 5
15:20 of all that God has done for us,
15:22 all of God, that God has done
15:24 is an emphasis on His delivering power
15:27 or the gospel.
15:29 Basically, it's the gospel, He's focusing on the gospel.
15:31 And then in Deuteronomy Chapter 5,
15:33 we have this repetition of the law,
15:35 we have the gospel and the law, or the law and the gospel,
15:38 you know, they go together.
15:40 Deuteronomy 5, Deuteronomy 4,
15:41 Deuteronomy 4, Deuteronomy 5,
15:43 remind us that law and the gospel go together.
15:45 And we see that all through the Bible,
15:47 we're gonna see that more and more
15:49 as we move through our lesson,
15:50 but it's important for us to see that that God's gospel
15:54 and God's law cannot be separated.
15:57 You can't separate them.
15:59 I love that whole explanation that Ryan gave to us earlier,
16:04 you know about sin, and the law,
16:07 and Jesus, and forgiveness,
16:10 and church, and the gospel.
16:13 I got it.
16:15 I got most of those in there, you know.
16:17 So let us remember, Do Not Forget.
16:20 Do not forget, what?
16:22 What are we not supposed to forget?
16:23 Well, there's something else we're not supposed
16:25 to get in Deuteronomy,
16:26 and it's in Deuteronomy Chapter 9
16:27 and we're gonna start in verse 7.
16:29 Deuteronomy 9 beginning in verse 7.
16:31 Here's what it says.
16:32 Deuteronomy 9:7, "Understand therefore,
16:37 that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land
16:42 to possess it for thy righteousness,
16:45 for thou art a stiff-necked people."
16:50 Next word.
16:52 Next verse.
16:53 "Remember, and forget not,
16:57 how thou provoked the Lord thy God
16:59 to wrath in the wilderness from the day that thou
17:01 didst depart out of the land of Egypt,
17:03 until you came into this place,
17:04 you have been rebellious against the Lord."
17:08 Why do we need to remember that?
17:10 Why do we need to remember that?
17:11 Well, we need to remember that because that magnifies
17:14 the love of God, that magnifies the goodness of God,
17:16 that magnifies the grace of God.
17:18 And it humbles us.
17:20 It reminds us of where we came from.
17:22 It reminds us of how good God is.
17:24 And what God has done for us.
17:25 It's so powerful. It's so powerful.
17:27 Now, of course, the devil wants to remind us all
17:30 of that because the devil wants to use our past,
17:32 our failures to nullify the love of God,
17:35 but you know what Jesus says?
17:36 Jesus says, "The devil is a liar."
17:40 That's what Jesus says, "He's a liar."
17:42 And the gospel proves that the devil is a liar.
17:47 So we see this beautiful picture
17:49 of God's love in the context of the law,
17:51 it's always there.
17:53 It has to be there.
17:54 In Deuteronomy 4:40,
17:57 the lesson study asks,
17:59 what conclusion then did Moses want
18:01 the people to draw from these words
18:04 about what God had done for them?
18:06 So Deuteronomy 4:40.
18:09 Let's just take a look at that verse real quick
18:11 and see what conclusion, did I get the right verse,
18:14 Deuteronomy 4 and verse. Yeah, I'm in Genesis.
18:16 Let me get to Deuteronomy 4:40.
18:21 What conclusion did the Lord want us
18:23 to draw from what He says to us in Deuteronomy 4:40?
18:28 "Thou shalt keep therefore his statues, his commandments,
18:31 which I command thee this day,
18:33 that it may go well with thee,
18:34 and with thy children after thee,
18:36 that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth,
18:39 which the Lord thy God giveth thee for ever."
18:42 I heard Jill say this earlier,
18:43 you know, whenever you read therefore,
18:45 there's something that went before that,
18:47 that is really significant.
18:50 That therefore is based upon
18:53 the previous verses, right?
18:56 God loved us, verse 37, "He loved our fathers,
18:59 he chose us, he brought us out in his sight
19:01 with a mighty power out of Egypt,
19:03 to drive out the nations before
19:05 as they were greater and mightier than we were
19:07 to bring thee into this land.
19:08 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart,
19:11 that the Lord He is God in heaven above,
19:13 and earth below, there is none else.
19:16 Thou shalt keep therefore."
19:18 Based on what's gone before,
19:19 and we see this all through the Bible,
19:21 this is really powerful.
19:22 We see this gospel preceding this magnification
19:27 of God's love, of God's heart, of God's character,
19:29 of who God is preceding,
19:31 everything that He commands us to do,
19:33 that He asks us to do,
19:34 all of the changes that take place in our hearts
19:37 come because of the goodness of God.
19:40 We repent, we turn around, we make a U-turn in life,
19:44 you know, if you're ever going in the wrong direction,
19:45 you know, you're following your GPS and you'd be,
19:47 it says, oh, turn right there and you're too late,
19:48 you know, you couldn't get over some of the lane
19:50 and you couldn't and you go down to the next line
19:51 and the GPS says, reroute,
19:54 reroute make a U-turn, turn around.
19:56 That's what it means to repent, to turn around in your life.
19:59 And so the quarterly asks us, well,
20:01 how does this model represent the plan
20:04 of salvation as expressed in the New Testament?
20:07 What we see in the Old Testament,
20:09 how is that expressed in the New Testament?
20:10 Was all through the New Testament.
20:13 It's all through the New Testament.
20:14 There are verses left, right, and center.
20:16 For example, let's look at Ephesians Chapter 2.
20:20 Have we already looked at Ephesians Chapter 2?
20:22 Yes, we did.
20:24 We might have looked at Ephesians Chapter 2
20:25 a couple of times, but we're gonna look
20:26 at Ephesians Chapter 2 again.
20:28 There's no reason why we can't look at it again,
20:31 but this time, we're going to start in verse 1
20:34 of Ephesians Chapter 2, looking for that theme
20:36 of God's goodness delivering us
20:38 when we are stiff-necked and rebellious,
20:40 and then transforming us by this goodness.
20:43 Ephesians 2:1, "And you he hath quickened,
20:47 who were dead in trespasses and sins.
20:49 Wherein in time past
20:51 you walked according to the course of this world."
20:53 Oh, Paul here is taking up the theme of Deuteronomy.
20:55 He's reminding us of our past, but not in a negative sense,
20:59 to magnify the gospel,
21:01 to magnify God's righteousness.
21:03 "Wherein in times past you walked according the course
21:05 of this world, according to the prince
21:07 of the power of the air,
21:08 the spirit that now works in the children
21:10 of disobedience.
21:11 Among whom we also had our conversation in time
21:13 past in the lusts of our flesh,
21:15 fulfilling the desires of the flesh of the mind,
21:17 and we were by nature the children of wrath,
21:19 even as others.
21:20 But God," verse 4,
21:22 "who is rich in mercy for his great love
21:24 wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins,
21:28 has quickened us together in Christ or with Christ,
21:31 by grace you are saved."
21:32 This is not just in verse 8.
21:34 It's not just in verse 8, it's in verse 5.
21:38 "And hath raise us up together,
21:39 and made us sit
21:41 together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
21:44 That in the ages to come he might shew
21:45 the exceeding riches of his grace
21:47 and his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus."
21:49 See, we remember our past,
21:50 we remember our stiff-neckedness,
21:52 we remember our failures,
21:53 so that God can be magnified
21:54 not so that we can be overcome by Satan in all of his lies,
21:58 but so that God can be magnified,
22:00 we see the same thing taking place in Romans 5:6-10.
22:03 We can't go there,
22:05 we see the same thing taking place in Titus 3:1-8,
22:07 we can't go there because we've got to go
22:09 to 2 Peter Chapter 1.
22:13 Why?
22:14 Because we're teaching, we're learning about
22:16 present truth in the Book of Deuteronomy.
22:18 And there's only one place in the entire Bible
22:21 where present truth where that phrase
22:23 is actually uttered.
22:24 And it's in 2 Peter Chapter 1.
22:26 Let's just begin in verse 1, "Simon Peter,
22:28 a servant of the apostle of Jesus Christ,
22:30 to them that have obtained like precious faith with us
22:32 through the righteousness of God
22:34 and our Savior Jesus Christ.
22:35 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge
22:38 of the Lord, through knowledge of God,
22:40 and of Jesus Christ our Lord,
22:42 according to his divine power
22:43 he's given unto us all things that pertain unto godliness,
22:46 life and godliness, through the knowledge
22:48 of him that's called us into glory and virtue.
22:51 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great
22:53 and precious promises that by these you
22:54 might be partakers of the divine nature,
22:56 having escaped the corruption that is in the world
22:58 through lust.
23:00 Beside this, giving all diligence,
23:01 add to your faith virtue and to virtue knowledge,
23:04 and to knowledge temperance,"
23:07 where am I?
23:08 "Knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience,
23:10 and to patience godliness,
23:11 and to godliness brotherly kindness,
23:12 and to brotherly kindness charity.
23:14 For if these things be in you, and abound,
23:17 they make that you shall neither be barren
23:20 nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
23:23 But he that lacketh these things is blind,
23:26 cannot see afar off,
23:28 and has forgotten that he was purged
23:33 from his old sins."
23:35 Do not forget that you've been purged from the old sins.
23:38 "Wherefore the rather, brethren,
23:42 give diligence to make your calling election sure,
23:44 for if you do these things, you shall never fall.
23:47 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you
23:50 abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord
23:52 and Savior Jesus Christ.
23:54 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you
23:57 always in remembers of these things,
23:59 though you know them,
24:00 that ye may be established in the present truth."
24:04 Deuteronomy, present truth,
24:06 2 Peter, present truth, Titus, present truth,
24:10 Romans, present truth, Ephesians, present truth,
24:12 the Bible, present truth.
24:14 And what is the present truth all about?
24:15 Remembering how stiff-neck we were?
24:18 And now in spite of that God has saved us
24:21 so that He can be magnified
24:22 and glorified through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
24:25 Amen. Praise the Lord.
24:26 Thank you. We're gonna take a short break.

25:06 We're glad you stayed right with us.
25:07 We're gonna jump into Tuesday's lesson with Brother Ryan Day.
25:10 Amen.
25:12 All right, so based off
25:13 everything you've heard so far,
25:15 we're gonna jump into Tuesday's lesson entitled,
25:18 Take Heed, Lest You Forget.
25:20 My name is Ryan Day. All right.
25:22 And we're going to be jumping
25:24 right into Deuteronomy Chapter 4,
25:26 because the lesson just takes us right into it.
25:28 There's really no introduction.
25:29 It takes us right to Deuteronomy Chapter 4.
25:31 And this whole entire lesson on Tuesday
25:33 is based on verses 9 and verse 23.
25:36 And there's a lots of lessons we can learn from this.
25:39 So Deuteronomy Chapter 9, excuse me, 4:9,
25:43 I'm gonna start there.
25:44 So notice what the Bible says.
25:46 It says, "Only take heed to yourself,
25:48 and diligently keep yourself,
25:51 lest you forget the things your eyes have seen,
25:54 and lest they depart from your heart
25:56 all the days of your life.
25:57 And teach them to your children and your grandchildren."
26:02 All right, keep that in mind.
26:03 Now go to verse 23. Deuteronomy 4:23.
26:08 Again, "Take heed to yourselves,
26:10 lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God
26:13 which He made with you, and make for yourselves
26:16 a carved image in the form of anything
26:18 which the Lord your God has forbidden you."
26:22 So again, this is a reminder, okay?
26:24 We've been hearing remember, remember,
26:26 remember, remember.
26:28 Now, God is again telling them in a way,
26:30 remember, because He's saying,
26:32 "Remember lest you forget
26:34 all of these things that I've told you,
26:35 that I've commanded you."
26:37 In this sense, the verb, take heed,
26:40 which is coming from the Hebrew word shamar.
26:42 It means to keep yourself.
26:44 It occurs overall throughout the Old Testament,
26:47 and many different times.
26:48 But it simply means keep,
26:50 to watch, to preserve, to guard.
26:53 So basically, God is saying, "Look, guard yourself.
26:55 Keep yourself in the way."
26:57 And there's many, many ways we can do that.
26:59 But it's interesting when you...
27:00 When we take this into consideration,
27:01 we know that Moses is declaring this,
27:04 God is declaring this through Moses,
27:06 and the people are constantly being reminded,
27:08 remember, remember, remember, take heed,
27:10 lest you forget.
27:11 But you know, the sad reality is that they didn't remember.
27:15 If you look afterwards,
27:17 you know, from the time of Mount Sinai
27:19 all the way through to the Babylonian captivity,
27:21 we're talking about on and off 840 years
27:24 of rebellion, in which the children
27:26 of Israel did not remember, they did not take heed.
27:30 In fact, you've an example of this.
27:31 Let's go to Judges Chapter 2,
27:33 they find this to be interesting
27:34 because again this is during the time in which Joshua
27:37 has now, is dying or has died.
27:41 And now notice what the Bible says.
27:42 Judges Chapter 2,
27:43 and we're gonna read first verses 7 through 10.
27:46 And then afterwards,
27:48 we'll also read verses 11 through 13.
27:50 So notice what it says here in Judges 2:7-10.
27:53 It says, "So the people served the Lord
27:55 all the days of Joshua,
27:56 and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua,
27:59 who had seen all the great works of the Lord
28:01 which He had done for Israel.
28:03 Now Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord,
28:06 died when he was hundred and ten years old.
28:09 And they buried him within the border
28:12 of his inheritance at Timnath Heres,"
28:15 I guess that's how you would say it,
28:16 "in the mountains of Ephraim,
28:18 on the north side of Mount Gaash."
28:20 Now, notice verse 10 here.
28:22 "When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers,
28:27 another generation arose after them who did not know
28:30 the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel."
28:34 Did they take heed?
28:36 Did they forget?
28:38 Take heed, lest you forget.
28:39 But again, you know, you have Moses
28:41 and then Joshua and Caleb's time.
28:43 Now Joshua has died.
28:45 And now there's a generation that is arose that
28:47 does not know the Lord.
28:48 And obviously, they did not follow this counsel.
28:50 Continue reading to verse 11 through 13,
28:52 and you get a greater understanding
28:54 of what happens here.
28:56 It says, "Then the children of Israel
28:57 did evil in the sight of the Lord,
28:59 and served the Baals, the false gods,
29:02 and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers,
29:04 who had brought them out of the land of Egypt,
29:06 and they followed other gods from among the gods
29:09 of the people who were all around them,
29:11 and they bowed down to them,
29:12 and they provoked the Lord to anger.
29:14 They forsook the Lord and served Baal and Ashtoreths."
29:18 Now, again, again, keep that in mind
29:20 and go back to verse 23,
29:21 that we just read in Deuteronomy Chapter 4.
29:23 What did he say?
29:24 "Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget
29:26 the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you,
29:28 and make for your,"
29:29 notice, "and make for yourselves
29:31 a carved image in the form of anything
29:32 which the Lord your God has forbidden."
29:34 So again, the commandments are being forsaken here,
29:37 and we're seeing that they did not remember,
29:39 they have forgotten.
29:41 Of course, if you fast forward,
29:43 you know, now again,
29:45 we're over 800 years away from this time,
29:47 now we're during the time prior to the 70 years
29:49 of Babylonian captivity.
29:50 Get over to the time of Jeremiah.
29:52 This has been a constant, ongoing theme all throughout
29:55 the history of Israel.
29:57 I'm in Jeremiah Chapter 7.
29:59 Notice what Jeremiah Chapter 7, I'm gonna read verse 16.
30:01 And then we're going to skip down
30:02 to verses 23 and 24.
30:04 But notice Jeremiah,
30:06 of course, he's known as the weeping prophet.
30:07 Jeremiah lived in during the time of the height
30:10 of the apostasy of Israel
30:12 prior to their entry into Babylonian captivity.
30:14 And it's just so sad
30:15 because Jeremiah is just crying out to the Lord,
30:17 asking God to forgive them,
30:18 asking God to awaken them,
30:20 and he's pleading with the people wake up,
30:22 have you forgotten?
30:23 Have you forgotten? Yes, you have.
30:24 Remember what the Lord said, lest you forget,
30:27 you know, you have forgotten.
30:28 But now verse 16,
30:30 notice what God tells Jeremiah His prophet.
30:32 He says, "Therefore do not pray for this people,
30:34 nor lift up a cry or prayer for them,
30:37 nor make intercession to Me, for I will not hear you."
30:41 And then he describes, he said,
30:42 "Do you not see what they do in the cities?"
30:45 Excuse me, I lost my spot.
30:46 "Do you not see what they do in the cities of Judah
30:48 and in the streets of Jerusalem?
30:49 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire,
30:52 and the women knead dough,
30:53 to make their cakes for the queen of heaven,
30:55 and they pour out drink offerings to other gods,
30:58 that they may provoke Me to anger."
31:01 You see this common theme
31:03 all the way through the Old Testament,
31:04 all the way through the history of Israel,
31:05 even all the way down to the time of Jeremiah,
31:08 and Ezekiel, and Daniel.
31:10 And now skip down to verse 23 and 24,
31:12 you'll see that it's connected to the same message
31:15 that is given in Deuteronomy Chapter 4,
31:17 and Chapter 5, and Chapter 6,
31:19 and all the way through to Chapter 9 and 10.
31:21 Notice what we see here
31:22 in verses 23 and 24 of Jeremiah 7.
31:26 It says, "But this is what I commanded them, saying,
31:29 'Obey My voice, and I will be your God,
31:31 and you shall be My people.
31:33 And walk in all the ways
31:34 that I have commanded you that it may be well with you.'
31:37 Yet they did not obey or incline their ear,
31:40 but followed the counsels
31:41 and the dictates of their evil hearts,
31:43 and went backward and not forward."
31:46 Notice, they did not progressed in a positive way
31:49 in the relationship with God.
31:51 They went backward and not forward.
31:53 So much so that by the time you get to Hosea,
31:55 this scripture just came to my mind.
31:57 It wasn't in the study,
31:58 it wasn't even a part of my lesson
32:00 that I had put together.
32:02 But this is, it just came to my mind,
32:03 Hosea 4:6,
32:05 so much that God is speaking to the people
32:07 and He says to them in this height of apostasy.
32:10 Hosea 4:6, He says,
32:12 "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."
32:16 He says, "Because you have rejected knowledge."
32:18 Notice, they don't have a lack of knowledge
32:19 because it wasn't there.
32:21 They don't have a lack of knowledge
32:22 because God didn't allow it to be there,
32:23 to be given to them.
32:25 They had plenty of sources, plenty of history,
32:27 plenty of the Word of the Lord to have access to but notice,
32:30 it says here in verse 6,
32:31 "Because you have rejected knowledge,
32:33 I will also reject you from being priest to Me,
32:35 because you have," notice, here it is,
32:37 "forgotten the law of your God,
32:40 I will also forget your children.
32:42 God have mercy.
32:44 Wow.
32:45 Lest you forget, what is it?
32:47 Take heed, lest you forget.
32:49 My friends, there are ways that we can safeguard ourselves
32:52 from losing sight of the plan of God for our life
32:55 and the lives of our future generations.
32:57 Because the lesson also brings out,
32:59 again brings us back to the ending portion
33:01 of verse 9 of Deuteronomy Chapter 4.
33:04 It says there in the ending portion,
33:06 "And teach them to your children
33:07 and your grandchildren."
33:09 Wasn't that the problem in Joshua's day?
33:10 When Joshua had died, there was a generation
33:12 that rose up that did not know the Lord
33:14 is because they were not practicing righteousness,
33:17 as the Bible says.
33:19 Notice 1 John 1:6, I'm gonna go quickly here
33:21 because I have little time left.
33:23 So just write these references down
33:24 and you can read them later.
33:25 1 John 1:6,
33:27 "If we say that we have fellowship with Him,
33:29 and walk in darkness,
33:30 we lie and do not practice the truth."
33:33 How can we safeguard ourselves
33:35 to make sure we don't forget the way of the Lord?
33:37 We have to practice righteousness.
33:38 Yes.
33:39 We have to practice the truth of God's Word.
33:41 1 John is flooded with this language,
33:43 this word practice.
33:44 1 John 2:29, "If you know that He is righteous,
33:47 you know that everyone who practices righteousness
33:50 is born of Him."
33:52 Are you practicing righteousness?
33:54 Are you making that a consistent practice
33:55 in your life?
33:57 1 John 3:7, "Little children, let no one deceive you.
34:00 He who practices righteousness is righteous,
34:03 just as He is righteous."
34:05 We put ourselves in the way of God.
34:07 We practice it, we will be okay.
34:09 We also have to be consistent.
34:10 Be consistent in our faith in practicing it,
34:13 being consistent.
34:14 1 Corinthians 15:15.
34:15 "Therefore, my beloved brethren,
34:17 be steadfast, immovable,
34:19 always abounding in the work of the Lord,
34:21 knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."
34:25 Galatians 6:9-10,
34:27 "And let us not grow weary while doing good,
34:29 for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
34:32 Therefore, as we have opportunity,
34:34 let us do good to all,
34:35 especially to those
34:37 who are of the household of faith."
34:39 Being steadfast, being consistent,
34:41 practicing the faith,
34:42 and of course, teaching it to our children.
34:45 What does the Bible say?
34:46 Proverbs 22:6,
34:48 "Train up a child in the way he should go,
34:51 and when he is old he will not depart from it."
34:54 If you train them genuinely in the way of the Lord,
34:57 they will not depart from it.
34:58 It's not just teaching them, but leading them,
35:00 leading our children in the way of Christ.
35:03 When they see Christ in us,
35:04 they will see and they will keep the faith.
35:06 Ephesians 6:4, I have to say this,
35:08 "And you, fathers,
35:09 do not provoke your children to wrath,
35:11 but bring them up in the training
35:12 and admonition of the Lord."
35:15 Practice righteousness, be consistent.
35:17 Teach it to your children, lest you forget, right?
35:20 Take heed, lest you forget.
35:22 Amen.
35:24 Praise the Lord.
35:25 Amen and amen.
35:26 Thank you, Ryan. That was wonderful.
35:28 I'm Shelley Quinn,
35:29 and I have Wednesday's lesson Eaten and Full.
35:33 And if I were going to retitle this,
35:35 I think I would retitle it,
35:37 Deceitfulness of a Life of Ease.
35:41 I just have to make a comment that I hadn't planned on.
35:44 But, you know, in Exodus 1 verse,
35:47 or excuse me, Exodus 2:24.
35:50 It says that God heard the groaning of the children
35:54 that are in bondage.
35:56 And this is interesting.
35:58 It said, "And God remembered His covenant
36:02 with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."
36:08 Did God just forget about His covenant,
36:11 and then all of a sudden just go,
36:12 oh, yeah, I made a promise to Abraham,
36:15 Isaac and Jacob.
36:17 No, the word as I started this out,
36:20 the word remembered means to take action.
36:24 To forget means you are not acting.
36:29 So here God,
36:32 we see that the everlasting covenant.
36:34 Revelation 13:8, the Lamb slain
36:37 from the foundation of the world,
36:39 then God tells His everlasting covenant
36:43 to Abraham who is justified by faith.
36:46 And now we're going to see
36:47 the progressive revelation of this covenant.
36:51 Even in Luke 1:72, it says, I think it's in Mary song,
36:57 it says, God remembered His covenant with Abraham,
37:02 Isaac, and Jacob.
37:03 So it is unfolding the same covenant
37:07 all throughout Scripture, it's beautiful.
37:10 So Exodus 4:22-23.
37:13 God begot Israel
37:17 as His covenant son.
37:20 He says to Moses,
37:22 you shall tell Pharaoh thus says the Lord.
37:25 Israel, he's had a covenant renewal with...
37:31 He started with Abraham,
37:32 it was renewed with Isaac, then with Jacob.
37:34 Now, Jacob's 12 sons are called Israel.
37:39 He said, "Israel is my son, my firstborn."
37:43 Israel's now a nation.
37:45 "So I say to you,
37:47 'Let My son go that he may serve Me."
37:51 Sonship is a covenant term to be the Son of God.
37:55 We're called sons of God
37:56 if we're led by the Holy Spirit.
37:59 And also firstborn is a covenant term.
38:03 So God became Israel's father having the expectation
38:06 of His covenant people
38:08 that they would submit to His leadership,
38:12 that they would submit to His care
38:15 and that they would follow the path
38:18 that He laid out for an abundant life
38:20 which is the path of obedience.
38:23 So now let's look at Deuteronomy 8.
38:26 Deuteronomy 8, we'll begin with verse 5.
38:29 Deuteronomy 8:5 says,
38:31 "You should know in your heart that as a man chastens his son,
38:35 so the Lord your God chastens you."
38:38 He saying, God's gonna direct you
38:40 in His loving Fatherly care.
38:43 "Therefore," verse 6, "therefore,
38:46 because you can anticipate
38:48 God's going to chasten you as his son.
38:51 You shall keep the commandments
38:52 of the Lord your God to walk in His ways,
38:55 and to fear Him as a child would fear a parent
38:58 with respect and honor.
38:59 Deuteronomy 8, let's jump down to verse 7.
39:04 "For the Lord your God
39:05 is bringing you into a good land,
39:07 a land of brooks of water, fountains and springs,
39:09 that flow out of valleys and hills,
39:11 a land of wheat and barley,
39:14 of vines and fig trees and pomegranates,
39:17 a land of olive oil and honey,
39:19 a land in which you will eat bread
39:22 without scarcity,
39:24 in which you will lack nothing,
39:25 a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills
39:29 you can dig copper."
39:32 This is the land of plenty.
39:36 Look at verse 10.
39:38 Deuteronomy 8:10,
39:40 "When you have eaten and are full,
39:43 then you shall bless the Lord your God
39:46 for the good land which He has given you.
39:49 Beware," verse 11 says,
39:52 "that you do not forget the Lord your God
39:55 by not keeping His commandments,
39:58 judgments, statutes which I command you today,
40:01 lest when you are eaten and full."
40:05 This is 8:12,
40:08 "Lest when you have eaten and are full,
40:11 and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them,
40:14 when your herds and your flocks multiply,
40:16 your silver and your gold are multiplied,
40:18 and all that you have is multiplied.
40:22 When your heart," verse 14 said, "is lifted up,
40:26 and you become prideful,
40:28 you forget the Lord your God."
40:30 You quit taking action according to His covenant.
40:33 You quit walking in His ways.
40:37 "You forget the Lord your God,
40:38 who brought you up out of the land of Egypt,
40:40 from the house of bondage."
40:42 God was the deliverer.
40:43 He was the redeemer, He brought him out.
40:45 "Who led you through that great and terrible wilderness."
40:48 He guided them in such a protective way.
40:52 He said, this wilderness
40:53 which were fiery serpents and scorpions
40:55 and thirsty land where there was no water."
40:58 God was their provider.
41:00 He says, "He brought you water out of the flinty rock,
41:02 He fed you in the wilderness with manna,
41:04 which your fathers did not know."
41:07 And what is the purpose?
41:09 Why was God doing all of this
41:11 so that He might humble you, and test you.
41:17 Now, hang on just a second,
41:19 what he is saying
41:20 is all of this wilderness wandering
41:24 was to teach the people to depend upon God.
41:29 See, as long as they were in the wilderness,
41:32 every day, they were,
41:35 they had a divine awareness of His presence.
41:37 From cloud there was the fire.
41:39 Yeah.
41:41 They were depending upon God for their very existence.
41:45 So you can believe me,
41:47 while they were in the wilderness wanderings.
41:49 You bet, they remembered God.
41:52 But he's saying here,
41:56 don't forget is not a loss of memory.
42:02 It's a loss of action.
42:05 You know, when He says that people forgot My covenant.
42:08 It's not like that He didn't say,
42:09 oh, yeah, He did that.
42:11 No, they just quit acting on it.
42:13 And they started serving the Baals.
42:15 And you, if we forget God's blessings,
42:18 it can lead us to a lack of obedience.
42:21 You know, Jesus said, Luke 6:46,
42:25 "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord, '
42:29 but you don't do what I say?'"
42:33 The wilderness test was to teach them
42:36 reliance on God,
42:39 and so that they would learn to walk in obedience.
42:43 And then all the rest of the nations would see,
42:47 look at what their God does for them.
42:49 Deuteronomy 8:18.
42:51 He says, "You shall remember the Lord your God,
42:55 for it is He who gives you power to get wealth,
42:58 that He may establish the covenant
43:00 which He swore to your fathers,
43:01 as it is this day."
43:03 Remember His covenant promises, His activities in the world,
43:07 His warnings, remember, take action
43:10 in recognizing the gracious hand of God.
43:13 I'll tell you what.
43:15 It's praise, as you said.
43:18 You don't pray, half of my prayers is praise,
43:21 thanking God for all the blessings daily.
43:24 And then it's to walk in covenant loyalty, obedience.
43:29 Now, I have to say this,
43:32 there is deceitfulness in riches.
43:35 Jesus said in Matthew 13:22,
43:38 that the seed that was sown among thorns,
43:41 he said, that's the one who hears the word,
43:43 but the cares the world,
43:45 the pleasure that like the glamour,
43:47 that a deceitfulness of riches choking,
43:50 suffocate the Word of God
43:52 right out of them, and it yields no fruit."
43:55 There can be danger in wealth and ease.
43:59 We forget to rely on God, we become self sufficient.
44:04 And when riches in this life are your goal,
44:08 guess what?
44:09 There's never enough.
44:11 Rich people always want more.
44:13 If that's your goal in life, and you know what?
44:15 Riches can be a really harsh taskmaster,
44:19 the more you have, the more time you have to spend
44:22 managing what you have.
44:24 They don't, riches don't buy happiness.
44:27 They won't even buy security, really,
44:29 because riches can be lost overnight.
44:32 So Jesus said in Matthew 6:24,
44:35 "You can't serve both God and money.
44:38 You can't serve two masters."
44:41 And Paul wrote to Timothy, said,
44:43 "If you desire to be rich,
44:45 you're gonna fall into temptation."
44:48 And he says, "The love of money is the root of all evil."
44:51 Money, wealth, prosperity is a gift from God.
44:55 But the love of money causes us
44:58 to pursue gold instead of pursuing God."
45:01 Amen.
45:03 Amen.
45:04 Thank you all so much incredible study.
45:06 Remember my lesson Thursday, and my name is Jill Morikone.
45:10 My lesson Thursday is Remember
45:14 That You Were a Slave.
45:15 Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
45:20 Think about Rahab was a harlot,
45:22 yet she became a forerunner of the Messiah.
45:25 Saul was a murderer, his name was changed to Paul,
45:28 and he became the apostle to the Gentiles.
45:31 Ruth was a Moabites, a heathen,
45:34 yet she became part of the nation of Israel,
45:37 and through her seed Messiah came.
45:41 Peter swore, David lusted,
45:44 Tamar prostituted, Jonah ran, Paul murdered,
45:49 and yet God used each of these in ministry
45:53 as His children to proclaim His gospel.
45:57 When we look at remember that you were a slave.
46:00 A few lessons ago, I had the same lesson,
46:03 remember that you were a slave.
46:04 And I told you if you watch that lesson,
46:07 I told you I like why questions.
46:09 In that particular lesson, we looked at
46:11 why they were brought out of Egypt.
46:14 This lesson we're going to look at
46:15 why questions again,
46:17 but this will be why do we forget?
46:20 Deuteronomy 5,
46:21 remember, this is the heart of the Ten Commandments,
46:24 Fourth Commandment there,
46:25 the re-giving of the commandments.
46:27 Deuteronomy 5:15.
46:28 We've quoted this many times this quarter so far.
46:31 "Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt,
46:34 and the Lord your God brought you out
46:35 from there by a mighty hand,
46:36 by an outstretched arm,
46:38 therefore the Lord your God commanded you
46:40 to keep the Sabbath day."
46:43 Why do we forget?
46:44 Remember that you were a slave?
46:46 Yeah.
46:47 Why do we forget that?
46:48 Why do we forget where we came from?
46:51 I would submit to you there's four reasons we forget.
46:55 The first reason is found in Deuteronomy 6.
46:57 Turn over to Deuteronomy Chapter 6,
46:59 we're going to verse 12.
47:00 The context of this,
47:02 this is God bringing the Israelites
47:04 to the Promised Land.
47:06 And Moses is telling the people and says,
47:08 "When God brings you to the Promised Land,
47:11 to cities that you didn't build,
47:13 to beautifully decorated houses that you didn't decorate,
47:16 to wells that you didn't dig,
47:19 to vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant,
47:22 when you've eaten and are full."
47:24 Then we read verse 12, what happens.
47:26 When you've eaten and are full,
47:27 and you're in this beautiful land
47:29 that God brought you to.
47:30 "Then beware, lest you forget
47:34 the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
47:37 from the house of bondage?"
47:39 Why do we forget?
47:41 We forget God when life is easy.
47:44 When it's easy, we tend to forget God.
47:47 Never rest content with what you've been given.
47:50 Never think I've arrived.
47:53 Philippians 3, I love this passage.
47:55 Philippians 3:13-14, Paul speaking,
47:58 he says, "Brethren, I do not count myself
48:00 to have apprehended, but this one thing I do,
48:04 forgetting those things which are behind
48:06 and reaching forward to those which are before,
48:09 I press toward the goal
48:11 for the prize of the upward call of God
48:14 in Christ Jesus."
48:15 In the context, we're looking specifically
48:17 at forgetting the good that you think you've done.
48:21 But also we can forget the bad that we've endured.
48:23 We forget the defeats and the victories.
48:25 We only remember what He has done.
48:28 So be careful when life is easy,
48:32 that you do not forget where God has brought you.
48:35 Takeaway number two,
48:37 we're going to Deuteronomy 15:15.
48:41 Deuteronomy 15:15.
48:42 This is the second reason why we forget.
48:46 Now the context of this is,
48:48 of course, owning slaves or servants.
48:52 Now, the regulation, the commandment,
48:56 though, whatever the word is the...
48:58 Statute.
48:59 Statute, whatever, that they had,
49:02 if they owned a slave,
49:03 if they owned a Hebrew man or woman for six years,
49:06 what happened on the seventh year,
49:07 they set them free.
49:10 And the Word of God said,
49:11 "Do not send them empty,
49:14 supply them with whatever the Lord
49:16 has blessed you with."
49:18 Now we come to verse 15.
49:21 "You shall remember
49:22 that you were a slave in the land of Egypt,
49:24 and the Lord your God redeemed you,
49:27 therefore I command you this thing today."
49:32 We forget God when we think
49:34 we're better than other people.
49:37 That is what was happening in this context.
49:39 They forgot that they used to be slaves.
49:41 And then when they're seeking
49:43 to set a slave or a servant free,
49:45 they don't even give them any blessings
49:48 or give them anything when they set them free.
49:50 They forgot where they came from.
49:52 We forget God
49:54 when we think we are better than other people.
49:57 The same thing we see in Deuteronomy 24.
50:00 This is same concept we forget God
50:02 when we think we're better than other people.
50:03 Deuteronomy 24:17-18,
50:07 "You shall not pervert justice
50:09 to the stranger or the fatherless,
50:11 nor take a widow's garment as a pledge."
50:13 Why?
50:15 "Because you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt,
50:18 and the Lord your God redeemed you from there,
50:20 therefore I command you to do this thing."
50:24 2 Corinthians, Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:12,
50:27 "We dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves
50:29 with those who commend themselves.
50:32 But they, measuring themselves by themselves,
50:34 and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise."
50:39 It's a dangerous thing
50:40 when we start looking around at other people.
50:42 It's a dangerous thing when we start thinking
50:44 I'm spiritually superior,
50:46 or spiritually even on the same plane
50:48 with another person.
50:50 It's a dangerous thing
50:51 when we forget where God brought us from,
50:54 and the pit of hell where we came from.
50:58 Let's look at the next verse, Deuteronomy 16:3.
51:02 This is the third reason why we forget.
51:06 Now this is in the context of observing the Passover,
51:09 on the yearly basis.
51:11 Deuteronomy 16:3,
51:12 "You shall eat no leavened bread with it,
51:17 seven days you shall eat unleavened bread with it,
51:19 that is, the bread of affliction,
51:21 for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste,
51:23 that you may remember the day
51:25 in which you came out of the land of Egypt
51:28 all the days of your life."
51:31 Why do we forget?
51:32 We forget God when life becomes busy,
51:36 and we need constant reminders of where we came from.
51:40 The Passover was a constant, every time they celebrated it,
51:44 it reminded them
51:45 that God delivered them from Egypt,
51:47 that God redeemed them.
51:48 You know, sometimes this is telling myself,
51:51 but when one of my friend's birthday comes up,
51:55 it reminds me how blessed I am to have them
51:57 in their life, in my life.
51:59 Sometimes I get busy,
52:01 and maybe I take people for granted.
52:03 You forget how much people mean to you,
52:05 you forget to express that
52:07 and when their birthday comes up,
52:09 or a special celebration,
52:10 I'm reminded of that friendship.
52:14 So we need to have reminders of where we came from.
52:18 And the Sabbath is a weekly reminder
52:20 that we were redeemed from the land of Egypt.
52:23 Reminder number four, why?
52:27 Why do we forget?
52:28 Here's reason number four, we're going to Ephesians.
52:30 Pastor James was in Ephesians 2,
52:31 we're going there.
52:33 We're going to pick up verse 8, I think he finished in verse 7.
52:35 So we're going to pick up in verse 8,
52:36 we've read this before,
52:38 "By grace you have been saved through faith,
52:40 and that not of yourselves, it's the gift of God,
52:43 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
52:45 For we are His workmanship,
52:46 created in Christ Jesus for good works,
52:48 which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
52:51 Now we're going to keep reading.
52:53 "Therefore remember that you,
52:57 once Gentiles in the flesh,
53:00 who are called Uncircumcision
53:02 by what is called the Circumcision
53:04 made in the flesh by hands,
53:06 that at that time you were without Christ,
53:09 being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel
53:12 and strangers from the covenant of promise,
53:15 having no hope and without God in the world."
53:19 Verse 13, "But now in Christ Jesus
53:22 you who once were far off
53:25 have been brought near by the blood of Christ."
53:28 We forget God,
53:29 when we forget where we came from.
53:31 Now this, of course, is referring to Gentiles,
53:34 but they forgot where they came from.
53:35 They forgot
53:37 that they were not children of the promise
53:38 that they were not God's people,
53:40 and they forgot where they came from.
53:42 We forget God,
53:43 when we forget where we came from.
53:45 Yes.
53:46 Where did you come from?
53:47 I don't know about you,
53:49 but I came from a place steeped in sin,
53:50 a place of addiction and God reached down
53:52 and said, I can deliver you.
53:55 So do not forget where God has brought you from.
53:59 And how do we remember?
54:00 We remember by looking to Jesus,
54:03 more than we look to other people.
54:05 Amen.
54:06 2 Corinthians 3:18, "We all with opened face,
54:09 beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
54:11 are being transformed into the same image
54:14 from glory to glory."
54:15 So we remember by looking to Jesus
54:18 more than we look around us to other people.
54:20 We remember by thinking about others
54:24 more than we think about ourselves.
54:26 Philippians Chapter 2, that incredible passage about
54:29 not doing anything through selfish ambition or conceit,
54:31 but esteeming other people
54:34 as better than ourselves.
54:36 And finally, we remember
54:38 by remembering what He's done for us,
54:40 instead of spending our time
54:42 focused and worrying on the future.
54:44 We remember how He's led us in the past
54:47 that gives us hope and confidence,
54:50 knowing that He will be with us in the future.
54:53 Psalm 103:2, "Bless the Lord, O my soul,
54:57 and do not forget all His benefits."
55:00 So remember what God has done for you,
55:02 His promises, His death and resurrection,
55:05 His soon return and His mercy
55:07 and unfailing love and deliverance.
55:09 Amen. Praise the Lord.
55:11 Oh, so I'm gonna encourage those of you at home.
55:14 Remember, do not forget what's been said here
55:17 and all the notes that you've been taking down,
55:19 so you can go back
55:21 and study a little more on this.
55:22 You're going to be just blessed again and again.
55:24 We're gonna have some thoughts here just,
55:26 you know, a couple minutes here.
55:27 So, Brother James, what do you have?
55:29 Concerning the days that are passed,
55:30 Remember that the gospel and the law are together.
55:33 Remember that our past,
55:35 our failures magnify God's goodness and grace
55:38 and delivering us from that past.
55:39 Amen.
55:41 That's right. Good.
55:42 Take heed, lest you forget.
55:43 Jeremiah 29:12-13.
55:45 I love the promises here.
55:47 "Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me,
55:50 and I will listen to you.
55:51 And you will seek Me and find Me,
55:53 when you search for Me with all your heart."
55:56 Oh, there it is.
55:57 My thought is that when you're eating full,
55:59 it reminds me of the Laodicean Church
56:01 that ways, oh, we are rich and in need of nothing.
56:05 And when really Christ tells them,
56:07 hey, you are wretched,
56:09 you are miserable, you are poor,
56:11 you're blind, you're naked.
56:13 Remember, that we always need God,
56:17 never become self-sufficient.
56:19 Amen.
56:20 Thursday, we talked about remember that you were a slave,
56:23 remember where you came from.
56:24 Don't forget where God brought you from
56:27 and don't forget whose you are.
56:30 That's who you belong to the Lord Jesus Christ.
56:32 Amen. Amen.
56:34 Today another just lesson
56:36 that's just indelibly on my heart and in my mind,
56:39 I want to keep it there.
56:40 And I pray that you do too.
56:42 You know, remember, do not forget,
56:43 we're remembering the rainbow,
56:44 we did concerning the days that our pastor went down.
56:47 Take heed lest, you forget,
56:49 eaten and full and remember you were slave.
56:51 We can just remember those things.
56:53 And the things that were said
56:54 it will be a real blessing to us.
56:55 I know in the coming days and months that lie ahead.
56:58 Again, we're glad that you have joined us today.
57:00 You stayed right with us.
57:01 I know that the Holy Spirit did some wonderful things.
57:03 I want to just read a quick thing here
57:04 in Patriarchs and Prophets 106.
57:06 It says, "It was God's purpose,"
57:08 notice this, "that as the children
57:09 after the generation should ask the meaning of the glorious,
57:13 glorious arch that spans the heaven,
57:16 their parents should repeat the story of the flood,
57:18 and I will test it,
57:19 and it will testify of divine love."
57:22 We need that, we need a testimony, right?
57:23 When He's something written in the heavens.
57:25 Praise God for that.
57:26 I want to make sure and just join us next week.
57:28 We're going to talk about Deuteronomy
57:30 in the later writings.
57:31 Now I know you don't want to miss that,
57:32 gonna be lesson number 11.
57:34 So be prepared for that. God bless you.
57:35 We love you and we'll see you next time.
57:37 Amen.
