00:01 Hello Friends, welcome to 3ABN Sabbath School Panel,
00:02 I'm John Lomacang, 00:04 thank you for joining us in Lesson number 2, 00:07 this entire theme is called simply: Genesis. 00:10 Today, Lesson Number 2 is about the fall. 00:13 It's going to be very revealing, 00:15 we encourage you to stay tuned and follow along 00:17 through a Scriptural excursion. 00:20 If you'd like a copy of the lesson go to: 00:21 3abnsabbathschoolpanel. com 00:24 and download a copy... that's a digital copy 00:26 but if you want to go to our local church, 00:28 tell the local Adventist friends of ours 00:31 that we sent you and just go and join them 00:33 for a wonderful thought-provoking study 00:35 on the book of Genesis. 00:36 Anyway, join us for this great study. 00:39 We'll be right back. 00:40 Music... 01:10 Lomacang: Hello, welcome... welcome back to a second study 01:14 on the book of Genesis. 01:15 You know, Genesis is where it all got started 01:17 and we are so excited that you've taken the time 01:20 to walk through with us this exciting, revealing study 01:24 of something that we sometimes tend to forget. 01:27 How did it all get started? 01:28 If you find out how it got started, 01:30 you can appreciate how God is going to restore 01:33 everything back to the way it was before the fall 01:36 and I'm surely looking forward to that 01:38 and I pray that that is also your desire. 01:40 Well, today, our family is people that you've met before 01:44 but the Sons of Zebedee are here... 01:47 I am John and right next to me is my brother, James. 01:49 James: It's good to be here with you, pleasure. 01:53 Lomacang: And another John... this is just an overload... 01:56 we are the Sons of Zebedee... 01:58 Pastor John Dinzey, good to have you here. 02:00 Dinzey: Thank you, it's a blessing to be here as well. 02:02 Lomacang: It is good to have the ladies to balance it out. 02:05 Mrs. Jill... our... our CFO... C... well actually... COO... 02:07 Jill: That's right. Lomacang: And Vice President. 02:10 Jill: One of those "Cs... " Lomacang: Yeah one of those "Cs" 02:11 always good to have you here... 02:13 I think you might have some lists for us today. 02:14 Jill: I think we might... thank you. 02:15 John: Okay, and Ms. Shelley... the lady from Texas. 02:18 Shelley: I'm just an "O... O" without the "C" in front of it. 02:21 Lomacang: Well, good to have you... all of you here, 02:24 James, would you begin with prayer for us? 02:25 James: Yes, let's pray, 02:27 "Father, we just want to thank You again 02:28 for this opportunity to study Your words, 02:30 specially the book of Genesis where it all began 02:32 and we're looking for a picture of Christ and salvation... 02:36 of an understanding of our humanity 02:38 and how You love us 02:40 and how You're working in our behalf. 02:42 We ask that You'll be with us... with our listeners, 02:44 guide and direct us through the Spirit... the Holy Spirit, 02:47 we pray in Jesus' name, amen. " 02:49 All: Amen. 02:50 Lomacang: Well, our memory text is Genesis 3:15 02:54 and this is the first prophecy in Scripture 02:58 that foretells the ultimate victory that Christ would bring. 03:02 You know, when you study this... 03:04 I did a sermon once called: The Seed 03:06 and it starts in Genesis 3:15 03:08 and what the Lord revealed to me is: 03:10 if you go through the battles that the Children of Israel had, 03:14 the purpose for that was... 03:16 Satan was trying to stop that Seed. 03:18 His determined... 03:20 his determined purpose was: "If that Seed comes to fruition, 03:23 I'm in trouble. " 03:25 Because he was told that when this Seed... which is Christ, 03:28 comes to fruition and walks the earth, 03:30 He is going to step on your head... 03:32 and he was determined that that would not happen. 03:35 But praise the Lord He prevailed. 03:36 So, let's look at the memory text together, 03:38 Genesis 3:15... the Bible says, 03:40 "On the heels of man's eviction from that perfect setting, 03:44 and I will put enmity between you and the woman, 03:48 between your seed and her Seed... 03:51 he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. " 03:56 You know, the Bible also has bookends. 03:58 Genesis is the left bookend 04:01 and Revelation is the right bookend. 04:03 You find in the beginning of the saga, 04:06 the woman and the serpent. 04:07 You find at the end of the saga the woman and the serpent. 04:10 What I like about the woman and the serpent 04:12 in the book of Revelation 04:14 is: he comes to her thinking that she is the same woman 04:17 that he met in Genesis 04:18 and she says, "Wait a minute, I got a different husband... 04:20 I'm not having it... " 04:22 and then he becomes angry and tries to get rid of her 04:25 but this time, she is victorious 04:27 through the blood of Jesus Christ. 04:29 Now, I want to begin with a statement that 04:31 I think you'll chew on it a little bit more 04:34 as we go through the lesson. 04:35 Creation was inclusive as well as exclusive. 04:40 Why do I say that? 04:42 God gave humanity everything 04:45 but He did not intend for us to know everything. 04:49 All: Hmmm... 04:50 Lomacang: Inclusive... every tree of the field... 04:55 everything about my creation is for you 04:57 except He gave us everything but He did not intend 05:02 for us to know everything. 05:03 God gave humanity all that we would need 05:06 and if you look at what happens today, 05:09 this is still a pattern in many lives. 05:11 Sin is often born 05:13 when we go looking for what God didn't give to us. 05:15 Jill: True. 05:16 Lomacang: When God establishes a prohibition, 05:19 it tends to open to us this inquisitive side. 05:22 Like... if you say to somebody, "Don't look... " 05:25 what do they do? Jill: Look. 05:27 Lomacang: So, if we say to them, 05:28 so, what you need to do Parents is say to your children, 05:30 "Look... " and they won't look. 05:32 You got to find a way psychologically to fool them 05:34 because sometimes 05:36 if you say to people, "Watch out... " 05:37 they don't pay attention to that, 05:39 it's the human nature to want to go in the opposite direction. 05:42 But the writer asks the question, 05:44 "Who is the serpent 05:46 and how does... 05:47 how did he deceive Eve?" 05:49 I'm going to share some Scriptures with you 05:51 just a moment 05:52 but let me just walk you through a word the stuck out to me... 05:56 the word: Deception. 05:57 It is called "Deception" because the one that's being deceived 06:02 is ignorant of the fact that he or she is being deceived. 06:05 Deception is very clever 06:08 so... I want to... I want to settle this point right here 06:11 because I've heard it so many times... out of context, 06:15 James, people have said, 06:17 "Even the elect will be deceived... " 06:19 and I said, "Wait a minute, there's this little word 'if' 06:24 and the next word 'possible... '" 06:26 which means the same way, Shelley, 06:28 it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats 06:32 can cleanse us from our sin... 06:34 it is not possible that the elect will be deceived 06:36 because they are the elect. 06:38 So... but... but how does deception work? 06:40 The text begins with the phrase "The serpent... " 06:44 let's go to Genesis chapter 3 06:46 and look at the first introduction. 06:50 Now, it's... it's strange 06:52 in the... in the beginning of the saga is: 06:55 "In the beginning God... " 06:56 then, the Sabbath is introduced 06:59 and then the nemesis is introduced. 07:01 In chapter 3 and verse 1, "Now the serpent 07:07 was more cunning... " or subtle... 07:09 "than any beast of the field 07:11 which the Lord God had made. 07:13 And he said to the woman... " 07:15 now, notice, he opened the door to conversation. 07:18 Now, this conversation could not have happened 07:21 if Eve wasn't where she was prohibited from being. 07:25 Now, God didn't say to her, "Don't go to the tree... " 07:29 He said, "Don't partake of it. " 07:31 But you'll notice that 07:33 if you are overcoming some kind of temptation 07:37 or if you are susceptible to temptation, 07:39 it's better not to go and see 07:41 whether or not the temptation is still there 07:43 than to go and realize... 07:45 the temptation is greater than you are. 07:47 So Eve, I believe, would have been better off 07:49 had she not gone to the tree 07:52 than going to the tree 07:53 determining whether or not she was fit to face somebody 07:55 she had never faced before... 07:57 the nemesis... the one who is involved in deception. 07:59 Who is he? 08:01 Let's go to Revelation 12 and verse 7 to 9. 08:03 Who is he? 08:05 Revelation chapter 12 verses 7 to 9 08:08 and you'll notice that Revelation as I said 08:10 is the right bookend 08:12 and Genesis is the left bookend. 08:16 Do you have that James, Revelation 12:7-9? 08:18 James: Yes. Lomacang: Read that for us. 08:19 James: "And there was war in heaven: 08:20 Michael and His angels fought against the dragon; 08:23 and the dragon fought and his angels, 08:24 and prevailed not; 08:26 neither was their place found any more in heaven. 08:28 And the dragon was cast out, 08:30 the Devil... serpent called the Devil and Satan, 08:33 which deceives the whole world; 08:34 he was cast out into the earth, 08:36 and his angels were cast out with him. " 08:38 Lomacang: Now, what I want to notice is, 08:40 even though he changes his methods of deception, 08:43 he's still into deception. 08:45 He began with the woman 08:46 but now he's going to conclude with the world. 08:49 He's expanding his territory 08:51 and Revelation 16:13 talks about the way he is going to do that, 08:54 three unclean spirits like frogs out of the mouth of the dragon, 08:57 out of the mouth of the beast... 08:58 out of the mouth of the false prophet... 09:00 they go forth to the kings of the earth 09:02 and of the whole world 09:03 to gather them to the battle of that day of God Almighty. 09:06 So, he's now increasing his arsenal... 09:09 he's also increasing his... his allies. 09:12 He has the whole world allied against God 09:15 and... but this time 09:16 he's seeking to bring the woman down again 09:19 because Revelation 12 verses 7 and 9 09:22 is a prelude to Revelation 12 verse 17. 09:24 He's angry with her 09:26 so this time he's pulling the entire world together 09:29 for his final attempt. 09:30 I don't often read quotations from Ellen White 09:33 in reference to the lesson 09:34 but this one is unavoidable. 09:35 It was included in the lesson. 09:37 Patriarchs and Prophets page 53, 09:39 "In order to accomplish his work unperceived... " 09:43 that's... that's the key to deception... 09:45 "unperceived, Satan chose to employ as his medium the serpent 09:49 a disguise well adapted for his purpose of deception. 09:54 The serpent was then one of the wisest and most beautiful 09:58 creatures of the earth. " 09:59 Quite a far cry from what he used to be. 10:02 "It had wings, and while flying through the air 10:06 presented an appearance of dazzling brightness, 10:11 having the color and brilliancy of burnished gold. " 10:16 Now, James, you've studied Revelation 10:17 what does that sound like? 10:18 A description of Christ. 10:20 James: Revelation 1. 10:21 Lomacang: Exactly... a description of Christ 10:23 so Satan is also... 10:24 his deception is to mask who he is 10:27 in something that will catch your eyes 10:30 but not engage your mind 10:31 and that's how deception happened 10:33 and I brought these four points out, Jill, 10:35 deception... sin hides its dark side initially 10:39 secondly, sin suggests that disobedience brings enrichment. 10:44 "You'll be like God... " 10:47 Sin cloaks itself in a harmless disguise 10:50 and sin conceals its identity behind a veil of authenticity. 10:54 It says, "If there's anybody you can trust, you can trust me 10:58 because God is not open with you... 11:00 He knows that if you find out what He doesn't want you to know 11:03 then, you'll be just like Him... so you could trust me. " 11:07 2nd Corinthians 11 verses 13 to 15, 11:09 what he did then... he is still doing today. 11:11 What he did then... he's still hiding his deceptive identity 11:17 behind a cloak of authenticity. 11:19 2nd Corinthians 11 verses 13 to 15, 11:21 you have that Jill? 11:22 Jill: I do... "For such are false apostles, 11:25 deceitful workers, 11:26 transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 11:28 And no wonder! 11:29 For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 11:33 Therefore it is no great thing 11:35 if his ministers also transform themselves 11:38 into ministers of righteousness, 11:39 whose end will be according to their works. " 11:42 Lomacang: Now grab that part again... 11:43 he hides himself behind a cloak of authenticity. 11:46 What are we being told here by Paul the Apostle? 11:49 because they look legitimate doesn't mean that they are. 11:52 Jill: That's right... Shelley: Amen. 11:53 Lomacang: Ministers... now, I would never think 11:55 that the word "Ministers" 11:57 he hides behind people that have transformed themselves. 12:00 They have not been transformed by God... 12:02 they take the job of transforming themselves. 12:05 God didn't have anything to do with it but they look the part, 12:07 they look authentic. 12:08 But the end result is going to be exactly as it will be 12:12 for the one who uses them for the art of deception. 12:15 The fourth point is: 12:18 God does not deceive but He allows temptation. 12:22 Panel: Hmmm... 12:23 Lomacang: Look at James chapter 1 verses 13 to 15, 12:25 "Let no one say when he is tempted, 12:27 'I am tempted by God'; 12:29 for God cannot be tempted by evil, 12:30 nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 12:32 But each one is tempted 12:34 when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 12:38 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; 12:42 and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. " 12:46 The story that came to my mind is that of Samson. 12:49 Samson's heart was engaged but his mind was disengaged 12:54 and when you read... when you read that story... 12:56 he was not attacked at his point of weakness... 12:59 he was attacked at the point of his greatest strength. 13:02 She did not ask him where does your weakness lie? 13:04 She said, "Where does your strength lie?" 13:06 We tend to think that we fall into temptation 13:08 because the devil attacks us at our weak points... 13:11 no... it attacks us at our strongest point 13:14 so that anything after that is easy. 13:16 That's why people tend to fall so completely 13:18 because he looks for the strongest thing... 13:20 you may have heard the phrase, 13:22 "We are only as strong as our weakest link. " 13:26 So, he says, "Where is your strength?" 13:29 and when he breaks the strongest thing in you, 13:31 he can bring you to the place where he brought Samson... 13:34 that is a place of blindness. 13:36 So, keep this in mind as I transition to the next day, 13:39 God did not tempt Adam and Eve... 13:41 He tested them. 13:43 Genesis 2 verses 16 and 17, 13:45 "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, 13:47 'Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 13:49 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil 13:52 you shall not eat, 13:53 for in the day you eat of it you shall surely die. '" 13:55 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 13:57 Lomacang: Why did the Lord do that? 13:59 Because... here's the point as I transition... 14:01 God never wants us to serve Him out of fear... 14:04 He wants us to be obedient out of love and a willing heart. 14:08 That's the foundation of true loyalty. 14:10 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... amen... amen. 14:12 James: Well, my name is James Rafferty 14:14 and I have Monday's lesson: The Forbidden Fruit 14:16 and it is based on Genesis chapter 2 verses 16 and 17 14:21 and Genesis 3:1 through 6 14:23 and let's just read those verses, 14:24 Genesis chapter 2:16 and 17, I'll read those... 14:27 if someone would like to read 3 verses 1 through 6 14:30 when I'm finished, 14:31 it says there in verse 16, 14:33 "And the Lord commanded the man, saying, 14:35 'Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 14:38 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, 14:40 thou shalt not eat of it: 14:42 for in the day that thou eatest thereof 14:44 thou shalt surely die. '" 14:46 Dinzey: All right, Genesis 3:1-6... 14:48 Now the serpent was more cunning 14:50 than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. 14:52 And he said to the woman, 14:54 "Has God indeed said, 14:56 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'? 14:59 And the woman said to the serpent, 15:00 "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 15:04 but of the fruit of the tree 15:05 which is in the midst of the garden, 15:07 God has said, 'You shall not eat it, 15:10 nor shall you touch it, lest you die. ' 15:12 And the serpent... verse 4, said to the woman, 15:14 "You will not surely die. 15:16 For God knows that in the day you eat of it 15:19 your eyes will be opened, 15:21 and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. " 15:23 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, 15:25 and it was pleasant to the eyes, 15:27 and a tree desirable to make one wise, 15:29 she took of its fruit and ate. 15:31 She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. " 15:34 James: So, this is basically the beginning of... 15:37 of what we would call the great controversy 15:39 between good and evil... between God and Satan 15:41 and we're kind of caught in the middle 15:42 and we see that right here in the beginning of this story. 15:45 We have Genesis chapter 2 and Genesis chapter 3 15:48 and there is a complete difference 15:51 between what God says and what the serpent says 15:54 and we're listening to God 15:55 and we're listening to the serpent. 15:56 We're getting two different stories, right? 15:58 Jill: Hmmm... hmmm... 15:59 James: So, the lesson quarterly says... 16:00 well, let's just look at the differences between the speeches 16:03 and I noticed that the first difference that you see here 16:05 is that God says, 16:07 "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat. " 16:10 The serpent says, 16:12 "Ah, you're not supposed to eat of every tree of the garden, 16:14 are you?" 16:16 So, God is... is actually telling us... 16:18 and this is really interesting God is actually telling us, 16:20 "You can freely eat of every tree... 16:22 now, if you eat of that one tree, 16:23 what's going to happen to you? 16:25 Lomacang: You're going to die. James: You're going to die 16:26 but the freedom to eat of that tree is still there. 16:29 God didn't actually make it so that we couldn't eat of it, 16:33 we have the freedom to eat of it 16:35 but God has told us there's a consequence 16:36 to eating of that one tree 16:38 and you can eat it freely of every tree. 16:39 Satan tries to make God out to be a "Withholder. " 16:42 He's trying to say, 16:44 "Well, God is kind of restricting you here... " 16:46 actually, God doesn't restrict freedom. 16:48 Even freedom to choose against it. 16:50 Okay... the second parallel I thought was interesting was, 16:53 God says, "In the day that you eat of that tree, 16:56 you will surely die. " 16:57 What does the serpent say? 16:59 "You will not surely die. " 17:01 So, it's exactly the opposite of what God says. 17:04 And then, the third point, God says, 17:06 "Do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil... 17:10 don't eat of that tree... do not... " 17:13 The serpent says, 17:14 "Well, you can eat of the tree of the knowledge 17:16 of good and evil... you'll be like gods... 17:18 you'll... you'll be like God if you eat of that tree. " 17:21 So, you've got this contrast... 17:23 an exactly opposite or contradiction. 17:26 So, what is the meaning of all this... 17:27 what... what is the point of this contradiction? 17:30 well, really if you think about it... 17:33 the serpent is misrepresenting God 17:35 and leading us to distrust Him. 17:37 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 17:39 James: And this is the... this is the core of this controversy 17:41 that we're involved in. 17:43 That's why so many people today just do not trust God. 17:46 They just do not trust religion... 17:48 they just do not trust the Bible 17:49 and they ask questions like, 17:51 "Well, if God is love, why...?" 17:52 "If God loves us... why?" 17:54 Because they have... 17:56 the seed has been planted within the human heart 18:00 right from Genesis... right from the very beginning, 18:03 the seed has been planted to distrust the words of God. 18:06 That's what Satan is trying to do, 18:08 he's trying to get us to distrust the words of God. 18:11 You see, Friends, 18:12 the Word of God... the Bible 18:14 is our only sure hope in this world today 18:17 and if Satan can get us to distrust those words, 18:20 we're going to be like a ship without an anchor 18:24 tossed to and fro in the waves of this world 18:28 and so, Satan is doing everything he can 18:30 to get us to distrust the Word of God. 18:32 It's the only thing that we can trust, 18:34 in fact, I can tell you myself and I'm sure we can all testify 18:37 that it's the Word of God that changed my life 18:39 and changed my heart. Panel: Amen. 18:41 James: It gave me a completely different direction 18:43 in this world. 18:44 So, when we think about this, 18:46 I want to think about the three things that Satan 18:49 pushed over on to God... 18:52 made God look like... first of all 18:54 that He was selfish. 18:56 "God is selfish... 18:57 He doesn't want you to be like Him... " 18:59 now, think about this... 19:01 "He doesn't want you to be like Him... " 19:02 they were already like Him. 19:04 They were... we were made in God's image. 19:06 We're already... so, every time Satan comes at us, 19:09 you've got to remember he's coming at us with something 19:12 that usually is completely contradicting reality. 19:15 The reality is... Adam and Eve were made in the image of God. 19:19 We were made in the image of God... 19:20 "God doesn't want you to be like Him... " 19:22 we are like Him... we're already like Him. 19:23 Be patient... wait... 19:25 when we first got created, we were a day old... 19:29 we looked like we were probably 20 or 30 years old 19:33 but we were a day old 19:34 and being a day old... we didn't know everything. 19:37 A newborn baby doesn't know everything... 19:39 so, God was working with us... God was training us... 19:42 God was educating us... 19:44 there was a lot for us to learn but... and... like you said, 19:47 John, there was a lot that we didn't know yet. 19:48 Lomacang: True. 19:49 James: But we... God is going to bring us to that place. 19:51 Now, Number 2: God is a liar. 19:53 Satan was trying to make God out to be a liar. 19:55 "You will not surely die... " 19:57 But God says, "You will surely die... 19:58 if you eat of this tree of the knowledge of good and evil 20:00 you're going to die. " 20:02 But Satan tries to say, "No, you're not going to die. " 20:04 So, Satan is trying to undermine the Word of God 20:07 and, of course, they already had access to the Tree of Life 20:10 which perpetuates life. 20:11 So, really they didn't need to worry about this claim 20:14 that you're surely going to die. 20:15 If they would just be faithful to God 20:17 and trust God and trust His Word, 20:19 that claim... that idea would have no hold on them. 20:23 So, Satan is continually seeking to contradict what God is saying 20:28 because he wants to undermine our trust in Him. 20:31 He wants to undermine our trust in His Word. 20:33 Satan is seeking to completely cause us to distrust God. 20:38 Number 3: God is a Controller. 20:42 "You cannot eat of all the trees... " 20:44 God is withholding something from you... 20:46 God wants to control you... 20:48 God wants to make sure 20:49 that you don't have access to something. 20:50 So, God here again is painted out in a character 20:53 that is not in harmony with who He really is. 20:56 God has given us access to all the trees... 20:58 now, there's one tree that if we access that tree 21:01 and eat of that fruit, 21:02 it's going to lead to terrible consequences. 21:03 God lays that out for us. 21:05 But the fact of the matter is, 21:06 we still had the freedom to choose to eat of that tree 21:09 and, of course, that's why we're here right now, 21:11 that's why we're in our situation right now. 21:13 So, God is seeking to accuse... in fact, 21:15 in Revelation chapter 12, we looked there already, John, 21:18 there's another verse... verse 10 21:20 that describes Satan as an accuser. 21:22 He's an accuser of the brethren that accuses us before God 21:26 day and night. 21:27 So, we've got this characteristic of Satan 21:32 that is seeking to undermine the character... 21:36 the truth about who God is 21:38 and the Word of God... the Bible is seeking to bring us 21:40 light and understanding of who God really is. 21:43 Have you ever been misrepresented before? 21:46 Have you ever had people say things about you 21:48 that weren't true? 21:50 And you know, it feels really uncomfortable 21:51 you know, when people say things about you that aren't true, 21:54 you feel uncomfortable... well, welcome to God's World. 21:56 That's where God lodges... 21:58 that's what His whole... this whole controversy is all about. 22:02 His whole kingdom has been misrepresented by Satan 22:05 and many of us have joined in with Satan 22:07 to misrepresent God. 22:08 God is a God of love 22:09 and a lot of people are missing that. 22:11 They're missing that about God 22:12 because they believed the words of the Accuser 22:15 and that's why we're told in John chapter 14 22:18 that Jesus has come to reveal the Father. 22:21 He says to Peter... "Have I been... " 22:23 or to Thomas... no... Philip... Philip... 22:25 "Have I been so long with you... 22:26 have you not seen the Father? 22:28 If you've seen Me, you've seen the Father. " 22:30 This was the mission of Christ 22:31 to reveal who the Father really is 22:33 and it's the mission of Christians. 22:35 Lomacang: That's right. 22:36 James: As those who follow Christ, 22:38 we are called to do exactly what Jesus came to do 22:41 and that is to reveal the true character of God in this world. 22:44 So, just as we close out here, a couple of thoughts... 22:48 you know, Satan's arguments against the Word of God 22:52 are continuing to this day. 22:54 Satan is seeking to undermine God's Word... 22:56 to undermine the Bible... 22:57 to undermine the truth. 22:58 He wants us to misunderstand God 23:01 so that we mistrust Him. 23:02 So, how can we be protected from these assaults of Satan... 23:07 from these... as John, you explained it... 23:09 they're... they're very subtle attacks. 23:11 because Satan doesn't always represent himself as he is. 23:15 Many times, he comes in a guise that we don't recognize. 23:18 Well, one of the things that's really important for us is 23:21 to believe the Word of God. 23:23 This all started with disbelieving the Word of God. 23:25 God has actually given us the Bible... 23:27 He's given us the Old and the New Testament 23:29 and unlike Eve, 23:30 when she listened to the words of Satan, 23:32 God wants us to listen to His words 23:35 and to believe His Word 23:36 so, one of the ways we can stand for God in these last days 23:38 is to believe His Word. 23:41 The second thing is that 23:44 we do not want to believe that which contradicts God's words. 23:48 So, yes, we've got the Word of God 23:50 but then we've got a lot of things that come unto us 23:52 that contradict the Word of God 23:54 and Eve took ahold of those things 23:56 which were contradictory to God's Word... 23:57 we don't want to do that. 23:58 We want to hold to God's Word... 24:00 and we want to just let go of those things 24:03 that contradict God's Word 24:04 and finally, Number 3: 24:05 We don't want to lead others to turn away from God. 24:08 So, Eve turned away from God 24:11 and then she led Adam to turn away from God. 24:12 So, we want to be those who believe God's Word... 24:15 we want to throw away those things 24:17 that contradict God's Word 24:18 and we don't want to lead others away from God... 24:21 away from His Word... 24:22 we want to lead others to God's Word. 24:24 Panel: Amen. 24:25 Lomacang: Thank you so much, James. 24:27 We were talking about the fall... 24:28 how did the fall happen and what can we learn from it? 24:30 We're going to go on Tuesday right after this break 24:33 so, don't go away, we'll be right back. 24:35 Music... 24:41 Ever wish you could watch the 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again 24:44 or share it on Facebook... " 25:37 Now, it's interesting that it says, 25:39 "The eyes of both of them were opened. " 25:41 We have to understand... 25:43 they weren't going around with their eyes closed... 25:45 they were open in a sense 25:48 that is different from what they expected. 25:51 Now, they were opened to know evil and good 25:55 which the devil painted as something that would be... 25:58 would be beneficial. 25:59 But they had the bitter sorrow of knowing 26:04 that it was not to their benefit... 26:05 it was to their detriment. 26:07 And it's interesting what the lesson says 26:10 and I'd like to read it... read it here, 26:11 it says... after they sinned Adam and Eve felt naked 26:14 because they lost their garments of glory 26:16 which reflected God's presence. 26:17 Perhaps, you've heard this before 26:19 where the... Adam and Eve were wearing a garment of light 26:24 provided by God 26:26 but they must have lost something when they sinned 26:28 and the lesson brings out two Scriptures... two passages 26:32 that I'd like to read to you, Psalm chapter 8 verse 5... 26:35 Psalm 8:5 says, 26:37 "For thou hast him a little lower than the angels, 26:40 and has crowned him with glory and honour. " 26:43 And now, the lesson turns to Psalm 104 verses 1 and 2, 26:48 "Bless the LORD, O, my soul. 26:50 O LORD my God, thou art very great; 26:52 thou art clothed with honour and majesty. 26:55 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: 26:58 who stretches out the heavens like a curtain... " 27:01 and it is believed... understood 27:03 that Adam and Eve had this garment of light 27:05 that they lost when they sinned 27:08 because now they were in a new condition... 27:11 they were now sinners... 27:14 they were now sinners. 27:16 So, let's move to Genesis chapter 2... chapter 3 verse 8, 27:20 notice what it says... very powerful, 27:23 "And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden 27:27 in the cool of the day: 27:29 and Adam and his wife hid themselves 27:32 from the presence of the Lord God 27:34 among the trees of the garden. " 27:37 So, this is something very interesting. 27:39 They heard the voice of God walking in the cool of the day. 27:44 Now, they heard the voice of God... to me... 27:48 gives me an understanding that they were familiar 27:51 with His voice... they were familiar... 27:53 perhaps, you may also be familiar with people 27:55 and the way they walk. 27:57 Some people walk a certain way... 27:58 "That's so and so... walking" 28:00 but they heard the voice... it says, 28:03 what God was saying is not sure... 28:05 we know that later He called Adam by name. 28:09 Now, listen... listen very carefully, 28:11 it says that they hid themselves 28:13 from the presence of the Lord God. 28:15 Now, why were they hiding? 28:16 God knew why they were hiding 28:19 and the fact that they hid themselves 28:21 was something different. 28:23 They... they were accustomed to when God the Creator came 28:29 they immediately went to Him 28:32 but now, something different has happened 28:36 and God has to call by name, "Where are you?" 28:40 Panel: Hmmm... 28:41 Dinzey: Now this is... takes us to Genesis chapter 3 verse 9, 28:44 "The Lord called to Adam, and said to him, 28:46 'Where are you?'" 28:48 and I like to look at this in a certain way 28:51 because, you know, 28:52 it's interesting that after Adam and Eve sinned, 28:54 they didn't go around looking for God... 28:56 "Now, we've got to go to God and talk to Him about this. " 28:58 No, they in fact were hiding from God 29:00 and God is looking for them 29:02 and it reminds me of Jesus that came to seek and to save 29:06 that which was lost. 29:08 God comes looking for them 29:09 because He knew what had happened. 29:11 So, let's... let's continue reading here, 29:13 and... in other words, God takes the first step... 29:18 Adam and Eve did not go looking for God... 29:20 God takes the first step, 29:21 verse 10 now, Genesis 3:10 29:23 "So he said, I heard your voice in the garden, 29:27 and I was afraid, 29:28 because I was naked; and I hid myself. " 29:31 For the first time ever in his life... 29:34 Adam and Eve are now experiencing fear... 29:36 one of the results of sin. 29:40 Sin brings fear. 29:41 Obedience does not bring fear, obedience brings joy 29:45 and they now felt fear 29:47 so, it's just a... a multitude of problems 29:51 that sin brings into the world. 29:54 So, Genesis chapter 3 verse 11, 29:56 "And he said, 'Who told you... '" 29:58 God is talking to them... 29:59 "who told you you were naked? 30:01 Have you eaten from the tree, 30:04 of which I commanded you that you should not eat?" 30:08 This question now brings Adam and Eve the opportunity 30:11 to express and confess their sin. 30:15 That's why the question is asked. 30:19 When God asks a question, there's a reason why... 30:21 "Have you eaten of the tree... " 30:23 now notice what He says, 30:25 "I commanded you that you should not eat... " 30:27 Now, they had freedom of choice... 30:29 this is why they ate of the tree. 30:32 This is a gift from God... we still have freedom of choice. 30:35 Praise the Lord for that 30:36 that we can choose to walk away from evil 30:38 and choose to follow God. 30:39 We have freedom and freedom is found in God. 30:43 So, they chose to eat of the tree of life... 30:46 I mean, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 30:49 Now, notice then what Adam responds. 30:55 You see, Adam could neither deny or excuse himself. 31:00 This is what verse 12 says, Genesis 3:12, 31:03 "The man said, 'The woman whom You gave to be with me, 31:08 she gave me of the tree, and I ate. '" 31:12 Now, Eve was right there, 31:14 "The woman that You gave me, 31:16 she gave me of the tree, and I ate. " 31:19 What is implied here when Adam says, 31:21 "The woman You gave me... " 31:25 it seems like he is putting part of the blame on God 31:29 and part of the blame on Eve. 31:32 He's not taking responsibility for himself... 31:34 it's basically, you know, 31:36 I know they didn't have guns in those days 31:38 but Eve didn't say, "Okay Adam, 31:39 you're going to eat of this 31:41 you're going to eat of this fruit" ah... he had a choice 31:45 but he chose to eat of the tree of his own accord. 31:50 He was not forced... 31:51 and this is something important to bring out. 31:54 Satan cannot force anyone of us to do anything. 31:57 He presents to us a temptation and we must choose 32:01 whether to do the evil or not do the evil 32:05 and we are now in a condition of weakness 32:09 that we are totally dependent upon God 32:12 to be able to have victory... 32:13 to be able to say "No" to the devil. 32:16 So... "The woman whom you gave to be with me, 32:20 she gave me of the tree, and I ate. " 32:22 Now, it's interesting the way this is brought out 32:25 that after Adam speaks and he says what happened, 32:28 God does not immediately talk to Adam 32:31 about the consequences of his sin. 32:33 He said... "the woman gave me... " 32:35 so now, God questions the woman 32:37 and then, eventually the woman says, 32:39 "Oh it's the serpent... " 32:41 So, God then talks to the serpent. 32:42 But then He goes back and He gives to each one 32:45 the... first He goes to the serpent... 32:48 and He says... "This is what's going to happen to you... 32:50 this is what's going to happen to you 32:52 and this is what's going to happen to you. " 32:53 So, now, let's go to... 32:55 let's go to... Job chapter 31 verse 3, 33:00 Job chapter 31 verse 33... 33... 33:04 Job 31:33... notice what it says here, 33:07 "If I covered my transgressions as Adam, 33:11 by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom... " 33:14 so Job's saying, "I'm not going to hide my transgression. " 33:17 He says, "If I cover my transgressions 33:20 Adam was trying to cover his sin... " 33:22 to say he wasn't guilty... 33:24 he was trying to find an excuse which... 33:28 to which there were none. 33:29 It's almost like... 33:30 "If You had not given me that woman... 33:32 I would have been fine... 33:34 if You have not made the woman I would have been fine. 33:37 You made the woman... so... " 33:38 he's putting blame upon God in this. 33:40 Let's go back to Genesis chapter 3 verse 13, 33:43 "And the Lord God said to the woman, 33:44 'What is this you have done?'" 33:48 I look at these words and I say, "Wow! 33:51 there's an exclamation here of sorrow and... and... 33:55 and heaviness... " 33:57 "What is this you have done?" 33:59 The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, 34:03 and I ate. " 34:04 So, we see here that sin 34:06 brings a situation in the minds of people 34:10 that they start making excuses... 34:12 start putting blame on others 34:15 and Eve now shifts the blame to the serpent... 34:19 "The serpent deceived me and I ate. " 34:23 So, we see here that they're not taking full responsibility 34:27 for their sin. 34:29 Proverbs chapter 28 verse 13 says, 34:31 "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: 34:35 but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them 34:38 shall have mercy. " 34:40 You know, there is this statement by Ellen G. White 34:46 it's F H... it says 191... 34:48 "We have the Christians in this age are inclined 34:52 to accept the sophistries of Satan 34:54 in the place of the words of God. 34:56 Many have separated themselves from God by wicked works 34:59 and they love not to behold God or to retain Him 35:01 in their knowledge. 35:03 They do not want to see God any more than did Adam 35:06 when he hid himself from the approach 35:08 of his heavenly Father. " 35:09 And God... you know, 35:11 we read in the Bible that God has thoughts of peace 35:14 concerning us. 35:15 Jesus is coming... 35:17 Jesus continues to seek and to save that which was lost 35:19 and I encourage you that if you have sinned, 35:21 go to the Lord and confess your sins. 35:23 Panel: Amen. 35:24 Jill: Thank you so much Pastor Johny... 35:26 each one of you... what an incredible lesson 35:28 as we look at the entrance of sin 35:30 unfortunately into this world that we live in. 35:33 We see the serpent and Eve being deceived 35:36 and Adam stepping into transgression. 35:38 My name is Jill Morikone, I almost forget to say that 35:42 and I have Wednesday's lesson 35:44 which is: The Fate of the Serpent. 35:47 As Pastor Johny already brought out... 35:50 God talks to Adam... then, God talks to Eve 35:53 then, God talks to the serpent 35:56 and that's the portion of my lesson: 35:58 The Fate of the Serpent. 36:01 What is the fate of the serpent? 36:03 Now, we could just read Genesis 3:14 and 15 and find out 36:07 but I want to start from a different angle 36:10 and then we'll come back to that. 36:11 We're going to start from the end point. 36:14 Have you ever questioned God's justice? 36:18 Have you ever questioned God's Justice... 36:22 Asaph didn't... I hope I pronounced his name right, 36:25 this is Psalm chapter 73. 36:27 Psalm 73 verses 2 and 3, 36:29 he said, "As for me, my feet had almost stumbled; 36:33 my steps had nearly slipped. 36:35 For I was envious of the boastful, 36:38 when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. " 36:41 He looked at the apparent prosperity of the wicked... 36:44 looked at evil seeming to rise 36:47 saying, "God, where are you?" 36:49 and then we jump down to verse 17, 36:52 Psalm 73 verse 17, 36:54 "Until I went into the sanctuary of God; 36:57 then I understood their end. 36:59 Surely You set them... " that's the wicked... 37:02 "in slippery places; 37:04 You cast them down to destruction. " 37:06 In the sanctuary we understand the plan of redemption 37:09 set forth... Genesis 3:15, we'll get to that. 37:12 We understand God's hatred of sin 37:15 but the redemption that He freely offers to sinners. 37:18 And we also understand sin from the end point. 37:22 from the point looking back... seeing what God has done... 37:26 what Satan has done 37:28 and looking at the final destruction of the wicked. 37:32 Have you ever questioned God's justice? 37:35 Job did... Job chapter 21, let's look at that. 37:39 Job 21 verse 7, 37:41 "Why do the wicked live and become old, 37:43 why do they become mighty in power? 37:45 Their descendants are established with them 37:48 in their sight, 37:49 and their offspring before their eyes. " 37:51 Verse 9... "Their houses are safe from fear, 37:54 neither is the rod of God upon them. " 37:57 So, what appears again that the wicked are prospering. 38:00 What is the fate of the serpent and his followers? 38:04 Verse 13... Job 21 verse 13... we see the fate, 38:07 here again, it's the end point. 38:09 "They spend their days in wealth, 38:11 and in a moment go down to the grave. " 38:15 The final destiny of the wicked... 38:17 it changes our perspective. 38:20 Have you ever questioned God's justice? 38:24 Habakkuk did... we're going to Habakkuk. 38:27 Habakkuk 1 verses 2 through 4, now, 38:30 Job questioned God's fairness, he questioned God's justice 38:34 because of the tragedy that he was enduring as a righteous man. 38:38 Habakkuk... he questioned God's fairness and God's justice 38:42 by demanding that God send judgments on the wicked 38:45 and he didn't think that the judgments were coming 38:48 fast enough. 38:50 So, Habakkuk 1 verse 2, 38:52 "O LORD, how long shall I cry, and You're not going to hear? 38:55 Even cry out to You, 'Violence!' 38:58 and You don't save. 38:59 Why do You show me iniquity, 39:01 and cause me to see trouble? 39:02 For plundering and violence are before me; 39:05 There is strife, and contention arises. 39:07 Therefore the law is powerless, and justice never goes forth. 39:11 For the wicked surround the righteous; 39:14 therefore perverse judgment proceeds. " 39:17 Habakkuk is questioning God's seeming lack of justice... 39:21 His seeming lack of fairness. 39:23 Again I ask you, 39:25 "What is the fate of the serpent and his followers?" 39:29 In this case, you just go one verse 39:31 and you see that God answers in verse 5 39:33 that He's going to raise up the Babylonian army 39:36 to punish the children of Judah. 39:39 You see, justice always comes. 39:42 Sometimes it's not when we expect it. 39:45 So again, what is the fate of the serpent and his followers? 39:51 I want to give you five snapshots 39:54 as we look at the unfolding fate of the serpent 39:57 from Lucifer in heaven 39:58 all the way down to Revelation chapter 20 40:01 and his final destruction. 40:03 So, when we look at Lucifer in heaven, 40:05 let's go to Ezekiel. 40:06 Ezekiel chapter 28... this is snapshot number 1, 40:10 the ultimate destiny of the serpent... 40:14 of Satan and his followers 40:16 was revealed at the rebellion in heaven. 40:18 Ezekiel 28 verse 16, 40:21 "By the abundance of your trading... " 40:23 now, this is God talking to Lucifer the covering cherub 40:26 before he was cast down to earth... 40:28 before he became what we know as Satan. 40:31 "By the abundance of your trading 40:33 you became filled with violence within, 40:35 and you sinned; 40:36 therefore I cast you out as a profane thing 40:39 out of the mountain of God; 40:40 and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, 40:43 from the midst of the fiery stones. " 40:45 Verse 17, 40:46 "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty... " 40:49 Lucifer became proud. 40:51 "You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; 40:53 I cast you to the ground, 40:55 I laid you before kings, that they might gaze at you. " 40:59 Verse 19, 41:00 "All who knew you among the peoples 41:02 are astonished at you; 41:04 you have become a horror, 41:05 and shall be... " what's that word? 41:07 "no more forever. " 41:10 Here's the promise all the way from the beginning 41:13 of the final destruction of sin... Satan... 41:17 that serpent... the old devil. 41:19 So, we see this great controversy that is working out 41:22 from Genesis chapter 3 all the way down to the end. 41:25 It was prophesied at the very beginning... 41:26 God said, "I'm going to wipe you out. " 41:29 The final destruction of Satan is sure. 41:31 Snapshot number 2: 41:32 We look at the curse pronounced after sin on Satan. 41:35 Now, this is in Genesis 3. 41:37 Genesis 3 verse 14, 41:39 now, it's interesting to me... 41:41 Genesis 3 is really a reversal of creation. 41:43 Remember last week we studied Genesis 1 and 2. 41:46 God said... what? "It is very good... " 41:49 after every day... it is very good. 41:52 There was appreciation of the good and the blessings 41:55 and here we see... sin... 41:57 and judgment 41:58 and evil 42:00 and curses 42:01 but we also see redemption and hope in Christ Jesus. 42:05 Genesis 3:14, "And the LORD God said to the serpent, 42:09 'Because you have done this, 42:11 you are more cursed than all cattle, 42:13 and more than every beast of the field; 42:15 on your belly you shall go, 42:17 and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. '" 42:20 Satan eating dust is a prophetic picture of his final degradation 42:24 and destruction that will take place at the end. 42:26 Snapshot Number 3: 42:28 The final destruction of Satan is prophesied 42:30 in the very next verse. 42:32 Genesis 3:15... this is connected... 42:35 this is the first Messianic prophecy... 42:38 Jesus being the Seed. 42:40 Genesis 3:15... 42:41 "I will put enmity between you and the woman, 42:44 between your seed and her Seed... " 42:46 that's capital "S" meaning Jesus the coming Messiah. 42:49 "He... Jesus... shall bruise your head, 42:52 and you shall bruise His heel. " 42:55 Who is destroyed? 42:56 The serpent... he's crushed on the head by Jesus Himself 43:00 and war will exist between the followers of Jesus 43:04 and the followers of Satan... 43:06 it's going to be a little painful 43:07 for the followers of Jesus 43:09 because the bruise on the heel could be a little painful 43:11 but Jesus' followers will not be destroyed 43:14 because Jesus triumphs over Satan. 43:16 Lomacang: Amen. 43:18 Jill: We see the comparison, Pastor John talked about this 43:20 I think in Revelation 12:17, 43:22 "The dragon... " 43:23 we see in Eden it's called the serpent 43:25 and Revelation called: the dragon. 43:27 "The dragon was enraged... " 43:29 we see in Genesis 3:15 the enmity... 43:32 that enmity is put in 43:34 and yet we see: enraged... 43:36 the anger that you're... in Revelation 12 43:39 "The dragon was enraged with the woman, 43:41 and went to make war with the rest of her offspring, 43:43 who keep the commandments of God 43:46 and the testimony of Jesus Christ. " 43:48 The war that began in Eden was won at the cross 43:51 and will culminate in the final destruction of Satan 43:54 and his followers. 43:56 That brings us to Snapshot Number 4: 43:58 which is Christ's victory at the cross 44:00 where Christ triumphed over Satan at the cross. 44:03 We see John 12:31 and 32, 44:07 "Now is the judgment of this world; 44:09 now the ruler of this world" that's Satan... 44:11 "will be cast out. " Why is that? 44:13 Because Jesus is lifted up 44:15 and He will draw all people unto Himself. 44:18 Colossians 2:15... 44:19 "Having disarmed principalities and powers, 44:22 He made a public spectacle over them, 44:24 triumphing over them in it. " 44:27 So, at the cross... Satan was disarmed... 44:31 Satan was defeated... his head was crushed. 44:34 1st John 3:8, 44:36 "He who sins is of the devil, 44:37 for the devil has sinned from the beginning. 44:39 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested... " why? 44:42 "that He might destroy the works of the devil. " 44:46 Finally, Snapshot number 4: 44:48 What is the fate of Satan? 44:50 What is the fate of the serpent? 44:51 What is the fate of his followers? 44:53 Snapshot Number 5: Thank you Shelley, 44:55 Satan's final destruction is prophesied... 44:57 we see this in Revelation 20 verse 10, 45:00 "The devil, who deceived them... " 45:02 that's all the nations... was what? 45:04 "cast into the lake of fire and brimstone... " 45:07 now, we don't have time to study that... 45:09 that does not mean he burns eternally forever 45:11 but he will be burned up 45:14 so, if you are struggling today... 45:16 if you are going through a battle... 45:17 if you feel like you are in the middle 45:19 of the great controversy battle... 45:21 know with assurance that the Satan... 45:22 that Satan will be killed and crushed forever. 45:28 Panel: Amen. 45:29 Shelley: Amen and amen... beautiful lesson... 45:31 I have Thursday's and it is: Human Destiny. 45:35 My name is Shelley Quinn. 45:37 Just think, "Okay... we... 45:39 let's picture Eve going into the middle of the garden. 45:42 There is the tree of knowledge of good and evil 45:45 that God told them not to eat off. 45:48 Do you think they were gold fruit 45:51 for... for the fruit of the good 45:53 and red fruit for the fruit of evil? 45:56 No... the tree of the knowledge... 46:00 the knowledge of good and evil... 46:03 it was a singular fruit 46:06 and what the sin was in bottom line 46:12 is that when they chose that fruit... 46:17 when they picked it and ate it, 46:20 they were deciding for themselves 46:23 what was good and what was evil. 46:26 I want to give you a definition of evil. 46:30 You know, when we talk about evil, 46:32 we might think of... of Hitler 46:35 or someone that you know... "Oh, he's evil... " 46:38 but here's... here's a good definition of evil, 46:41 disobedience to God. 46:44 Panel: Hmmm... 46:45 Shelley: Due to not trusting Him... 46:47 not believing Him 46:50 and disobedience is evil. 46:53 It... it separates us from our Creator of infinite love... 47:00 infinite power and knowledge 47:02 and God's point from the very beginning 47:06 when He said to them, 47:07 "Look at all these beautiful trees I have created... 47:11 you can eat of any of them. 47:13 You see this one... 47:14 children, I don't want you to try to decide 47:19 what's good for yourself and what's evil for yourself. 47:22 I know the end from the beginning... 47:24 you don't... 47:26 and I don't want you to experience the pain 47:31 of knowing evil... 47:34 to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil 47:38 meant to reject the relationship with God 47:44 to decide to become your own God... basically. 47:48 So, God pronounces blessings and He pronounces curses. 47:53 Blessings on obedience... 47:55 curses on disobedience... 47:58 that's His righteous judgment against disobedience. 48:01 Now, I have to say to you, 48:02 sometimes people say, 48:04 "Why do you all make such a fuss over the Hebrew definition 48:07 and the Greek definition?" 48:08 Well, I'll tell you what... words are important 48:10 and let me give you an example. 48:12 Recently, I was in the hospital. 48:14 I had Vestibular Neuritis 48:17 where the nerve from your ear to your brain goes haywire 48:20 and I was so dizzy I couldn't stand up straight... 48:23 ended up in the hospital 48:25 and when the nurse was reading the discharge, 48:30 the doctor had written: patient is giddy. 48:34 Well, my... 48:38 I'm going to tell, my old feelings were hurt 48:40 only... the only... 48:42 only word or definition I knew of "giddy" 48:46 was that "giddy" meant, you were silly... talkative... 48:50 maybe a little disoriented... too excited... 48:52 and I was like... 48:54 "Ah, I can't believe the doctor said that about me. " 48:57 Then I looked it up. 48:59 "Giddy" is the medical term 49:02 to have a sensation of whirling 49:05 and a tendency to fall and stagger. 49:07 So, words are important... 49:10 our understanding of the nuances of the word 49:13 and when it comes to the word "curse" 49:15 boy! this is something! 49:17 God... His righteous judgment against sin is: curse 49:22 but there are different words used for curses in the Hebrew 49:28 and they have varying degrees of bitterness. 49:33 There is a word "arar" 49:35 means to pronounce a judgment on someone 49:38 that's broken the covenant. 49:40 It's used sixty times 49:42 but now when we get to Deuteronomy 27 49:46 where it says, "Cursed is... " 49:48 Deuteronomy 27... in 15 through 26 49:51 it says, "Cursed is the man 49:53 who basically breaks the covenant. " 49:55 That's another word and it's used 12 times. 49:59 Genesis... oh, here's... 50:01 if you compare Jeremiah's 50:04 "Cursed be the man that trusteth in man... " 50:09 and then, "Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord. " 50:15 This is another word for "curse. " 50:17 So, I wanted to say all of this because "curse" really... 50:24 when God pronounces a curse on... on a man for disobedience, 50:31 it's summed up in these verses, 50:33 here is how we can sum up "curse. " 50:37 Jeremiah 11:3, 50:39 "Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of the covenant. " 50:44 Panel: Hmmm... 50:46 Shelley: You're under a curse 50:48 but then, in Galatians 3:13 50:51 the New Testament responds saying, 50:54 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse, 50:56 being made a curse for us. 50:58 For it is written, 50:59 'Cursed is every one that hangs on a tree. " 51:01 So, here is what I want to do, 51:04 I want us to get into Genesis 3:14 51:07 because I wanted to point out a couple of things 51:10 about this passage. 51:12 In Genesis 3:14 it says, "The Lord God... " 51:16 now, this is His covenant name... 51:18 when you see Lord God... 51:21 this is the name: Jehovah... Yahweh... 51:23 He says to the serpent, 51:28 "You are more cursed than all than all the cattle... " 51:30 well, I'll tell you what... 51:32 then He says in verse 15, 51:34 "I'll put enmity between you and the woman... 51:37 between your seed and her Seed... " 51:40 capital "S" speaking of Jesus Christ... 51:44 he will bruise your head... " 51:46 he's going to crush you... 51:48 "and you shall bruise His heel. " 51:51 You know what? 51:53 This is explicitly a curse without hope. 51:55 Do you see any hope in this? 51:57 He just said, "Hey, you're cursed above everything. " 52:01 And God is going to come down... take on the flesh 52:05 as the seed of the woman become the Son of man... 52:09 the Son of God and going to crush your head... 52:12 you are... as you said... your destiny is kzzzzz... 52:17 you're out of here. 52:19 But in the midst of this "curse" passage 52:24 do you notice the hope because He says, 52:29 "I'll put enmity between you and the woman... 52:32 between your seed and her Seed. " 52:35 He's going to bruise your heel... 52:38 Satan would reach out and... and cause pain to Christ 52:43 but Christ was going to overcome. 52:45 So, the woman's offspring... 52:48 He... the Seed... is Christ 52:50 and even though Christ is going to give a fatal blow 52:55 to the serpent, 52:57 wow! hallelujah... 52:59 the people have this hope of redemption. 53:04 To the woman... verse 16... 53:06 this is Genesis 3:16, 53:08 "To the woman He said, 53:09 'I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; 53:12 in your pain you shall bring forth children; 53:15 your desire shall be for your husband, 53:17 he shall rule over you. '" 53:20 Now, you've got to look at that in the perspective... 53:24 you should understand what God said to the woman 53:26 in the perspective of salvation 53:30 because through her is going to come the Seed 53:32 that will rescue the people. 53:33 "Then to Adam He said... " 53:35 in verse 17, 53:36 "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife... " 53:38 see... Eve was deceived... Adam was not. 53:41 Adam chose to disobey. 53:44 "He said, 'Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, 53:47 and have eaten from the tree which I commanded, saying, 53:50 'You shall not eat of it'. 53:52 Cursed is the ground... " 53:53 now, God is cursing the ground 53:55 "for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it 53:59 all the days of your life. 54:00 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth... 54:02 you shall eat of the herb of the field 54:04 and in the sweat of your face you shall eat bread 54:07 till you return to the ground, 54:09 for out of it you were taken; 54:12 for dust you are... 54:14 you're dust that I molded 54:16 and got down and breathed the breath of life into you 54:19 but when my breath of life is taken from you, 54:22 to dust you shall return. " 54:24 And then, verse 20 says, 54:27 "Adam called his wife's name Eve, 54:28 because she was the mother of all living beings. " 54:31 So, God's... God doesn't specifically 54:36 curse as He did with the serpent or the ground. 54:41 The man... 54:43 he is under the curse of sin 54:46 because he's disobeyed and... and wow! 54:50 you know, God... 54:51 it was grace that they didn't die right away 54:53 when they ate of it 54:54 but they were then sent out of the Garden. 54:57 God sent them away from the Tree of Life 55:01 so that they wouldn't pluck from that Tree of Life 55:04 and perpetuate their life as sinners. 55:08 But verse 21 says, 55:11 "Adam and his wife... 55:14 for the Lord... the Lord God made tunics of skin for them, 55:19 and clothed them. " 55:21 This is the first sacrifice that we see in the Old Testament. 55:25 I don't have time to go forward 55:27 but the point to know is this, 55:31 evil is disobedience to God 55:34 and God's righteous judgment against disobedience 55:38 isn't something we want to have to endure. 55:42 Lomacang: Amen, thank you Shelley. 55:44 Well, Pastor James, give me a summary of the day you covered. 55:47 James: Well, just this picture that we have starting in Genesis 55:51 of God being misrepresented 55:52 and we know what that's like 55:54 and we know the kind of consequences it leads to... 55:56 it leads to terrible consequences 55:57 where God in Christ is come to set things right... 56:01 to reveal who He really is... 56:02 what He's really like so we can trust Him again. 56:04 Lomacang: Amen, thank you, Pastor John... 56:06 Dinzey: You know, it is evident that Adam and Eve 56:08 eventually confessed and had true repentance 56:11 because they accepted the tunics... 56:13 they taught their children how to sacrifice to God... 56:16 and so, praise the Lord for that 56:18 because you also have to choose to follow God... 56:21 before you is: good and evil... choose the good. 56:25 Jill: Amen, I had Wednesday, The Fate of the Serpent 56:28 and I don't know about you 56:29 but sometimes this world seems like there's a lot of sin... 56:31 there's a lot of sickness... 56:33 there's a lot of suffering... 56:35 there's a lot of sorrow and pain 56:37 but this world is not all there is 56:39 and some day soon, 56:41 God will completely wipe out Satan and his followers 56:45 and we'll spend eternity with Him. 56:47 Panel: Amen... amen. 56:48 Shelley: God doesn't want you to eat from the 56:51 knowledge of the tree of good and evil. 56:54 He doesn't want you to try to decide what's good for yourself 56:57 and what's bad for yourself. 56:59 We know so little... 57:00 we're so prideful to think that we can do that 57:03 but what we've got to hold on to 57:07 is how forgiving and loving our God is 57:09 and we know Revelation 22:3 57:11 says that at the end there's going to be no more curse. 57:16 God wants to protect you 57:18 from walking in the consequences of sin. 57:21 Lomacang: Well, thank you Shelley... 57:22 thank you Jill... thank you Johny... 57:24 thank you James 57:26 and thank you for taking the time to join us. 57:28 We've had an exciting study on the fall of man. 57:32 How could the study on the fall of man be exciting? 57:35 Well, we've learned something, 57:36 I think that's the best way of saying it. 57:38 But I want to leave this thought with you, 57:39 Luke chapter 10 verse 19, 57:41 "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents 57:44 and scorpions 57:45 and over all the power of the enemy, 57:46 and nothing shall by any means hurt you. " 57:49 Jesus is able to keep us from falling... 57:51 that's the good news. 57:52 We don't have to continue falling 57:54 so, join us next time for Lesson Number 3: 57:57 Cain and His Legacy 57:59 and as you know, we're studying Genesis 58:02 so, that means we're just getting started... 58:04 see you next time. |
