00:03 let's go. 00:31 Welcome back to Sabbath School. I am so glad that you're here 00:33 with us again today. (Miss Ruthie) We have an exciting 00:37 program with our sharing time. We have a really fun mission 00:40 story and our Bible story with Miss Michelle is about who our 00:45 neighbor is. So before we get to that, let's sing some praises 00:49 to Jesus. So join me in singing. 06:00 Hello boys and girls. My name is Sue Hinkle and I want to tell 06:05 you a story that comes from Adventist World Radio. Adventist 06:10 World Radio loves to share Jesus with people all around the world 06:15 You know there's so many people that have never heard about 06:19 Jesus. And one time there was a very special Sabbath School 06:24 class. Do you have a very special Sabbath School class 06:27 too? Well this Sabbath School class had an idea. They wanted 06:33 to do something for Jesus to tell other people about Jesus, 06:37 but they weren't sure what to do but then they had an idea and 06:42 you know what they did? They decided they were going to 06:48 collect money. They were going to do everything they could to 06:51 try to raise money to send it to Adventist World Radio so that 06:57 they could buy Bibles to send to people that had never heard 07:02 about Jesus before. So the kids started thinking, what can I do? 07:06 What can I do? And one child they got money for their 07:11 birthday and they took all their money and they brought it to 07:16 Sabbath School for their mission project. And then some other 07:19 kids thought what can we do? We'll have a bake sale. So their 07:24 moms and their dads they made things, food and desserts, and 07:31 they sold it and all the money that came in from that bake sale 07:37 then they gave that to Sabbath School for their special mission 07:41 project. One boy that was a little bit older, he decided he 07:47 would help mow lawns for people and so he would mow some lawns 07:52 and they would get money and they brought it. You know what? 07:57 They raised so much money. They raised almost $2000 for Bibles. 08:05 Can you believe that? That's a huge amount of money. And once 08:10 they had all that money they sent it in to the office of 08:15 Adventist World Radio and do you know what happened then? 08:18 Adventist World Radio bought Bibles, lots of Bibles and sent 08:24 it up to this village in the Philippines. In this remote 08:29 village many of them did not know about Jesus until just a 08:34 little bit before. And they started learning about Jesus but 08:37 they had no Bible to learn about Jesus themselves. So what they 08:44 when they saw those Bibles coming that the kids from the 08:49 Sabbath School had given the money and the people bought 08:53 Bibles, then it came to their village and they had boxes and 08:59 boxes of Bibles. They started handing the kids Bibles, the 09:06 adults got Bibles and they were so excited. They just took their 09:11 Bibles and they held it close to them like that and don't you 09:16 think those Sabbath School kids that raised the money for Bibles 09:20 were so excited that they had done something for Jesus. They 09:26 had, they had done something very important. Sometimes you 09:30 think, well I'm just little what can I do for Jesus? You can do a 09:36 lot for Jesus, you know that? Do you know that you could raise 09:41 money for something very special too. Maybe you want to think how 09:47 can I raise money? Maybe I could do chores around the house. 09:52 Maybe mommy and daddy would give me money if I did something 09:56 special. Maybe you could ask your grandma, your grandpa 10:00 if they would somehow help give money and you could do a very 10:07 special project too. Wouldn't that be really exciting? And you 10:12 don't even have to send the money far away. You could even 10:16 do something special in your own neighborhood. So this week I 10:21 want you to think what can I do for Jesus? What can I do that 10:26 might help share Jesus with someone else? Okay boys and 10:30 girls. Bye bye. 10:33 ♪ ♪ 10:38 Hi everyone. I want to tell you about some really special people 10:43 in my life. In fact they're the people who live very close to 10:47 me. (Miss Michelle) I'd say I'm talking about my neighbors. I 10:51 must have the best neighbors ever. For example, our next door 10:57 neighbor is our grandma. Can you imagine? My little boy loves 11:02 living next to his great grandma it's so special. Also we share 11:07 the same driveway with some more neighbors who are a lovely 11:10 couple who our family has known for years and we know that 11:13 they are always there if we need them and they're always so sweet 11:17 and kind to us. Then in the front yard we have some really 11:20 fun kids to play with and their mom and dad and grandma and 11:23 grandpa and then on the other side we have another couple who 11:26 are so sweet. They even gave us some free sand for my son to 11:30 play with in his sandbox and he loves it. It's like his 11:34 favorite thing to do. And on the other side some of our church 11:37 members are actually our neighbors and it's so special to 11:40 have some really wonderful neighbors all around us. Today 11:44 our question is, Who is our neighbor? Let's pray. 11:50 Dear heavenly Father, thank you so much for my neighbors. I just 11:54 want to pause and say thank you for them. Thank you that they 11:56 look out for us and for each other and thank you for giving 12:00 us really fun people in our lives. I pray the Holy Spirit's 12:03 with us today as we talk about who our neighbor is according 12:06 to you. Not what the world says. In your name we pray, Amen. 12:11 All right. Today's story is probably most commonly known as 12:16 the Good Samaritan. Now back in Jesus's time the definition of 12:22 neighbor was a little different when Jesus came up with a 12:27 definition. The Pharisee's definition was the people who 12:30 live next door and many of us may have that same definition 12:33 but Jesus' definition was different than ours. In fact, He 12:38 said that there was a little broader look at who was our 12:42 neighbor. In fact, in the 10 commandments it talks about how 12:45 we should treat our neighbor. Exodus 20 verses 16 and 17 I 12:49 mean especially focus on the last two commandments, number 12:52 nine and number 10. Twenty verse 16 and 17: In Exodus 20, back, 12:58 back, back here verses 16 and 17 Here we go. Sixteen says:... 13:05 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 13:08 That means you should not lie. And then 17 says:... 13:12 You shall not covet your neighbor's house, you shall not 13:14 covet your neighbor's wife nor his male servant, nor his female 13:16 servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey nor anything that is your 13:19 neighbors. 13:20 Now was Jesus saying, You can lie about anybody as long as 13:24 they're not living next door to you? And you know, Billy Bob Joe 13:31 who lives one town over you can wish that you had his car but 13:35 your neighbor's car, nope, that breaks the 10th commandment. 13:38 No. The principle of it is that we shouldn't lie about people. 13:42 Or to people. And that we shouldn't covet or want what 13:46 those people have. And that's really important to not do those 13:50 things. So this helps to broaden the definition of neighbor. 13:54 A neighbor isn't just someone who lives right next door to you 13:57 A neighbor is actually anyone around you. Anyone is 14:03 technically your neighbor according to Jesus. Jesus 14:06 actually became our brother and our neighbor and we're all 14:10 brothers and sisters then in Jesus. Jesus says everyone and 14:13 He's our example so we should also consider everyone to be our 14:17 neighbor. But you see back then the Pharisees had a very 14:21 important list that they kept going and I have it right here. 14:25 It says The Not My Neighbor List They said okay people are my 14:29 neighbor except heathens, nope. Samaritans, nope. Publicans, 14:36 nope, that's a tax collector. Sinners, nope, well he probably 14:40 didn't have any neighbors then. Poor people, nope. And oh they 14:44 forgot one, I better add one, Yup these people definitely are 14:49 not my neighbors, ignorant people are not my neighbor. 14:53 Right? Or a word that is more commonly used today although 14:58 probably not one that we should include in our everyday verbiage 15:00 is dumb. Dumb people are not my neighbor. That's their list. Is 15:05 that a very Christlike list? No. In fact, right with number four 15:12 they have no neighbors. In fact, they are not their own neighbor. 15:14 Right? But they liked to think they were better than everyone 15:17 else because they followed their very special rules and that made 15:23 the best. Mmm. Hmm. And they went even further to us to say 15:28 even like the people on the list even them was like touching 15:31 them was like touching someone with a disease, euww, that they 15:35 might catch. Can you imagine living like that? They must have 15:37 had such sad lives. I actually feel really bad for them. And on 15:41 top of that they loved to argue. In fact, they loved to argue 15:45 about, like well who's good enough to be my neighbor? Who's 15:46 good enough to be my friend? Right. Neighbor might be a 15:49 synonym for friend. But Jesus loved everyone and that made them 15:53 upset. Let's flip over to Matthew 9 verse 11. This is just 15:58 one example that just really upset them. And it says:... 16:02 And one the Pharisee's saw it [that would be Jesus] eating 16:06 with all sorts of different people. And they said to his 16:10 disciples why does why does your teacher eat with tax collectors 16:11 and sinners. [Ugh.] When Jesus heard that he said to them, 16:16 Those who are well have no need of a physician but those who are 16:20 sick. [Mm huh] But go and learn what this means. I desire mercy 16:26 and not sacrifice. For I did not come to call righteous but 16:31 sinners to repentance. 16:32 Let's think about what Jesus said. He said, if I go and I 16:36 take my son's temperature, right and it is not high then you're 16:44 not going to find in the emergency room or at my son's 16:46 pediatrician are you? No. I wouldn't go there because he's 16:50 not sick. He doesn't need a doctor. But if I take my son's 16:54 temperature and it beeps and it's red and, oh my, so high 16:57 then you sure know I'm going to go and get some help for him. 17:00 Right? Just like that people who don't recognize their need for 17:05 Jesus, it's like, I don't know what I can do to help you. 17:08 But if people realize that we're sick, we have a sin sickness, 17:12 then we can know that we can go to Jesus and he will help us. 17:16 He will give us the medicine which is His salvation that will 17:21 save us, that will heal us from our sin sickness. And that's 17:26 when they continued to be irritated with Him. They wanted 17:29 to trick him, so they sent a lawyer. Now lawyers can be very 17:32 good at arguing and they can be tricky people, although I have 17:35 some very good friends that are lawyers and I know that they're 17:37 there to help other people. But this lawyer was there to trick 17:42 Jesus. And so they said that they were going to send him to 17:47 Jesus. And that's in Luke. Interesting. We're going to hop 17:50 on over to Luke now for the rest of this story. Luke chapter 10 17:54 and we're going to start up in 25. Luke chapter 10 verse 25. 18:00 We're going to quickly read through the story of the good 18:02 Samaritan. It's probably familiar one to you. If not, 18:04 I hope you enjoy it for the first time. Here goes. 18:06 And behold a certain lawyer stood up and tested him saying, 18:09 Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life? [I want to 18:12 live forever. What should I do?] And he said to him, Well what is 18:15 written in the law? What is it that's you're reading of? 18:17 [Lawyers are very smart people and they read a lot and that's 18:20 why they're smart.] So he answered him, Well it says you 18:23 shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your 18:25 soul and all your strength and all your might and your neighbor 18:27 as yourself. And He said to him, you have answered rightly. Do 18:31 this and you will live. And he wanting to justify himself said 18:35 to Jesus, Well who is my neighbor? 18:37 He was feeling a 18:38 little guilty because he didn't necessarily love people like he 18:41 should. So he decided to ask another question to distract 18:44 Jesus and distract himself from his guilt. 18:46 Then Jesus answered 18:48 and said [a story. I love Jesus' stories, parables.] A certain 18:52 man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves 18:56 who stripped him of his clothing wounded him and departed 18:59 leaving him half dead. 19:01 Thieves busted out, they grabbed his 19:03 wallet, this is Miss Michelle's wallet. They took his money, 19:06 they took his credit cards. They probably didn't want a zoo 19:10 membership, but who knows. They took his Costco card. They 19:13 took his, Mmm, they probably couldn't use his health 19:15 insurance card. They took his, ah, driver's license, that 19:18 wouldn't help them much. So they took everything and they left 19:21 him for dead. They beat him up too. They didn't just take 19:25 things, they beat him up and they left him for dead. Wow! 19:29 This is a sad start to the story let's see what happens. 19:32 Now by chance a certain priest came by on the road. [Priest, 19:35 right? This would have been like one of their pastors back then.] 19:38 And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 19:41 He clutched his Bible closer and thought, Oh no. Woops, sorry, 19:44 probably made a loud noise there. I don't want to help him I don't 19:47 have time. I need to make it to church. I got to prep my sermon 19:50 for tomorrow. I don't know what day it was. But anyway. And he 19:53 didn't help. How sad. 19:55 Likewise a Levite, [that would have been 19:58 someone who works for the church] When he arrived at the 20:00 place, he came and looked. He saw him and passed by on the 20:04 other side. 20:05 Once again, they thought that even if they 20:07 touched these sorts of people that they were touching 20:08 someone with a disease. How sad. All this man needed was some 20:13 help. 20:14 But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came where he 20:18 was and when he saw him he had compassion on him. So he went 20:26 to him 20:27 and he got out his first aid kit, he was prepared and he 20:31 took his bandage and he bandaged his wounds. They're making this 20:37 hard to get into. Anyway, he bandaged his wounds and he took 20:41 care of him. Like everyone should have, right? And then he 20:47 put him up on his donkey. And let's continue reading what the 20:49 Bible says. I guess I don't need to put that back in there right 20:52 now. Let's keep reading. 20:58 So he went to the man and was pouring oil and wine on them. 20:59 And he sat him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and 21:01 took care of him. Now on the next day when he departed he 21:04 took out some money and he gave it to the inn keeper and said to 21:08 him, Take care of him. Whatever more you spend I will come again 21:13 and will repay you. So which of these three do you think was a 21:17 neighbor to him who fell among the thieves. 21:18 Now by this time God had spoken to the lawyer's heart and the 21:21 lawyer knew. He knew the Pharisees were not correct in 21:25 their dealings with other people and who was actually the 21:27 neighbor. But he also was very steeped. The time and the 21:33 culture of that time was so ingrained in him that he 21:36 couldn't bring himself to say the word Samaritan. He couldn't 21:39 say well the Samaritan was the good neighbor. 21:41 So the man answered, He who showed mercy on him [which is 21:45 code for the Samaritan]. And Jesus said to him, Go and do 21:50 likewise. 21:53 Wow! Isn't that amazing? The Bible says you shall love the 21:58 Lord your God with all your heart and your neighbor as 22:02 yourself, in Luke 10 verse 27. And this story once again used 22:09 a Samaritan just like our story from last Sabbath with the 22:12 Samaritan who remembered to say thank you. Those stories with 22:15 the Samaritan, someone who wouldn't typically be considered 22:20 to be one of God's chosen people wouldn't have even made the 22:23 neighbor list. Samaritans are number two on the Not My 22:25 Neighbor List and yet the Samaritan showed what God is 22:30 actually like. Wow! Have we passed by someone that we can 22:36 help? Mmm. That's a sobering thought isn't it? And sometimes 22:41 sadly in today's day and age it's not safe to help people. 22:44 But when it is safe it's really important that we do that. 22:48 Even when we don't feel that it's the safest we can try to 22:50 think of something that maybe we can do. I know it's hard because 22:54 maybe somebody is asking you for money and you don't have any. 22:57 Or maybe someone's asking you for a ride, but you don't feel 22:59 safe having them ride in the vehicle with you. It's sad the 23:02 times that we live in, isn't it? But there are always ways that 23:05 we can be a good neighbor to other people. Maybe you can make 23:08 a list of those ways with your family and think of some ways 23:10 that you can show others what being a good neighbor, what 23:13 loving God really looks like.
