And as you can see behind 05:09 me there are some amazing rock formations. Now I want to show 05:14 you some of the really cool things that we saw on our hikes 05:17 and when we came to overlooks and to different vistas. We were 05:21 able to see some really fun things that God created. Now you 05:27 know many times people will say things like they were made over 05:31 millions and millions of years. But if you believe the Bible and 05:35 you read the Bible you know that guess who created it. 05:39 God created it. And what caused a lot of erosion really dramatic 05:44 erosion, that's where you can kind of see it looks like 05:48 fingers in the background. Well what caused this dramatic 05:51 erosion? Well the flood and the ice age that came after the 05:56 flood and then it became what we see today. Now the wind and the 06:03 rain and the sun and the ice and the snow, they all cause lots of 06:08 erosion and so slowly over time it does erode more. Now as I'm 06:15 here and as I'm enjoying all the beauty that's all around all the 06:21 nature and all the rocks and all the bushes and the trees and the 06:25 flowers you know what it reminds me of? Do you guys use a little planner 08:14 Maybe your parents or grandparents do to keep 08:15 their lives going in order. Today we're going to learn about 08:18 someone in the Bible who really liked things to be a certain way 08:22 and was really busy a lot. Hmm. I wonder who that could be? 08:26 Let's get started and let's pray 08:28 Dear heavenly Father, we thank you and praise you 08:30 for being here 08:32 with us today. Please send your Holy Spirit to guide our minds 08:35 and to help us learn new things about you. In your name we 08:38 pray, Amen. 08:40 Before we get started with today's story, let's review a 08:43 little. You see Jesus' mission to this earth was to make men 08:50 whole and to show them what God was like. His rescue mission was 08:53 really to rescue us from our sins and to save us for heaven. 08:59 Right? Now Satan really wanted Jesus to mess up you see. He 09:07 tempted Jesus in every way that he could think of. He tried to 09:10 get him to make bad choices at every turn but if Jesus had made 09:15 but one mistake the entire plan of salvation would have not 09:19 worked. It would have been cancelled. Right? And I am so 09:24 thankful that Jesus did not fall prey to Satan's temptations. 09:29 Satan went even further. He started to put wrong ideas into 09:34 people's minds. I mean, he started that with Eve, right, 09:36 in the garden of Eden. But he started to tell people in their 09:40 minds what the Messiah would be like. Right? Not what the Bible 09:44 and not what prophets like Isaiah prophesied. He told them 09:48 the wrong ideas about what the Messiah would be like. He was 09:50 hoping that they would not recognize Jesus when he came. 09:53 Now some people when they listened and saw Jesus, they 09:57 believed. They couldn't help but believe. Others still doubted. 10:01 And even his disciples doubted sometimes. Even his family 10:07 doubted sometimes. Wow! His mother watched him all 10:13 throughout his ministry, all throughout his life and yet she 10:15 still wondered why things weren't happening the way she 10:19 had been taught as she grew up, by the Pharisees and the priests 10:23 Right? Mmm. How sad that was for Jesus and how lonely he was 10:28 to not have any people, not very many at least, people on this 10:32 earth who truly believed and understood his mission and 10:35 trusted him. Jesus had a best friend though. His best friend 10:39 was His heavenly Father and He knew that God was always there 10:44 with him. Now you know the Pharisees and the rulers, they 10:48 decided not to follow Jesus at all and they always tried to 10:52 cause some problems for Him. And we're going to talk about that 10:56 some in our story today and even more for our story for next week 10:59 Do you have a home? I know. I am very thankful for the home that 11:04 we have. And if we do have a home we can be very thankful for 11:08 that. But there are many people who don't have a home and if 11:12 you're one of those people know that there are a lot of people 11:15 that share that with you. In fact, I was curious because the 11:19 lesson said many people but I was curious about how many 11:22 people there are that don't have a home. Now that doesn't 11:25 necessarily mean that they're living out in the street. 11:27 It could mean that they're living in a homeless shelter or 11:30 maybe they're living with family or relatives until they can get 11:32 back on their feet again. Or maybe they are living, hopefully 11:37 in a warm climate, but outside. Now I looked it up and over 11:42 one half million people are experiencing homelessness 11:45 and that's just in the country where I live, in the United 11:49 States of America. Isn't that sad? And the crazy part though 11:53 was when I was reading today's lesson it said that Jesus was 11:57 actually homeless. Wow! Jesus was homeless. You see he was 12:02 always going from place to place and he had to rely on others to 12:06 help him have food to eat and a place to sleep at night. Right? 12:10 In fact, in Matthew 8 verse 20 Jesus actually talks about it. 12:15 He didn't try to hide the fact that he was homeless. He said 12:19 this in Matthew 8 verse 20:... Foxes have holes and birds of 12:24 the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his 12:29 head. So Jesus was among the homeless population in our world 12:33 The Pharisees, like I said, were always trying to trick Jesus. 12:37 But there was one home where Jesus felt safe. He always felt 12:42 welcome there and he knew that the people who lived there truly 12:46 believed and trusted in him. What a welcome place. And I hope 12:50 that that's the way your home feels like as well. A place 12:53 where you feel safe. Now this home was in the town of Bethany. 12:57 It was about a mile and a half from Jerusalem, so a super 13:00 convenient location and three siblings lived there. Siblings 13:04 means what? Brothers and sisters right? There was the brother 13:07 Lazarus and the sisters, Mary and Martha. And they knew Jesus 13:12 was the Messiah, like for sure. Mary, in fact, had experienced 13:17 for herself Jesus's power through His heavenly Father. 13:23 Right? You see sadly Mary had been tempted by Satan and 13:28 trapped into doing many, many wrong things and making some 13:32 really negative choices in her life. And when she met Jesus 13:35 that first time she wanted to change and he could see that. 13:39 But once you start making bad choices is it easy or hard to 13:45 stop? I'm thinking about things like maybe telling a lie or 13:49 stealing or other things. In fact, sometimes when we start 13:52 making bad choices we have to make more bad choices to cover 13:55 up the bad choices that we made. And the same was true for Mary. 13:58 Jesus will help us though. He's the only way that we can 14:01 overcome bad choices that we make that Satan tries to tempt 14:05 us to make. Right? And Jesus helped her again and again and 14:10 again. In fact, do you know how many times he helped her to free 14:13 her from Satan's temptations? Seven times. Each time when she 14:18 came back and she'd explain to Jesus what had happened again, 14:21 and she had fallen back into temptation. He didn't judge her. 14:24 In fact, he prayed for her and sometimes he was so sad and he 14:29 was so like he just felt it in his heart so much that he was 14:32 actually crying when he was praying for her. And he would 14:35 encourage her and finally after seven times she was free at last 14:42 How happy her siblings must have been. Right? To see their sister 14:45 making better choices through the power of Jesus Christ. He 14:49 can do that for us too, kids. Now Mary, Martha and Lazarus 14:54 were very different. I'm sure that you guys are not exactly 14:56 like your siblings. I know my brother and I are different in 14:59 many ways, and same in some ways too. Right? But they had 15:03 one thing in common. That was that they all loved having Jesus 15:06 over to their house. I love having guests and that's one 15:09 that's been really hard for me because I really enjoy having 15:12 people over to my house. Now when Jesus would come Mary and 15:19 Martha had two different strategies and they kind of 15:22 represent in a way the two different people that are on 15:25 this planet. Maybe two different personalities. When Jesus came 15:29 Martha busted out these real quick and was hoping that he'd 15:33 be a little distracted, and did some last-minute mopping and 15:36 some last-minute sweeping. Right? And then after that she 15:38 would go into the kitchen and she would make the most 15:41 fantastic meals of fresh fruit, breads, who knows what all. 15:46 And she would spend all of her time making Jesus' stay Mah! 15:51 Beautiful. Right? Wonderful. Mary, on the other hand, had 15:56 another strategy. They were both so excited to see him. Mary, 15:59 however, went straight to his feet and just like a child, just 16:02 like you might do at bedtime stories. I know my son likes to 16:05 stand up beside me and listen to bedtime stories. I think he's 16:08 trying to... He's in denial maybe that he actually has to go 16:11 to sleep soon. Anyway. And she would sit at Jesus' feet and 16:15 listen and listen. Now this annoyed Martha. I kind of 16:19 understand that. Because when I have my planner out and I have 16:21 things that I have to do I can kind of tend toward being like 16:24 Martha. I mean like how come other people are not doing 16:26 what they're 16:28 supposed to do too. Right? Now in Luke chapter 10 is where 16:30 we're going to pick up this story. Luke chapter 10 verse 38 16:36 is where we're going to start. Luke 10:38: 16:39 I love reading it right from the Bible. I don't know about you 16:42 but I think it's really cool to hear exactly what happened. 16:46 Now it happened when they went that he entered a certain 16:51 village and a certain woman named Martha welcomed him to her 16:53 house. And she had a sister called, [you got it] Mary who 16:57 also sat at Jesus' feet and heard his word but Martha was 17:00 distracted with much serving and she approached Jesus and said, 17:03 Lord, do you not care that my sister left me to serve alone. 17:06 Therefore, tell her to help me. And Jesus answered and said to 17:10 her, [What is Jesus going to say. Right?] Martha, Martha, 17:15 you're so worried and troubled about many things but one thing 17:21 is needed and Mary has chosen the good part which will not be 17:27 taken away from her. 17:30 This was a rebuke. This was Jesus saying you're wrong Martha. 17:33 Right? But he said it in such a kind way. Did you hear that? 17:36 I can just imagine how he said it with his tone of voice. 17:40 Right? And the good part, what is that? I think that the good 17:44 part is starting with Jesus, being with him, sitting at his 17:48 feet, listening to him through reading our Bibles, through 17:52 praying and through learning our Sabbath School lesson and 17:54 memory verse. Those are all great ways that we can choose 17:57 the good part. Now our lesson study talks about how is 18:02 breakfast or worship more important? Hmm. That's a good 18:05 question. Right? And the answer that they gave I liked because 18:08 it said both of them are really important and we need to find a 18:12 way to fit them both in. How can we prioritize to make that 18:16 happen? There's many things that you can do and maybe this is 18:19 something you could talk about as a family. I know from my 18:22 family one of the things that I enjoyed or enjoy is finding a 18:29 worship book or a story from the Bible or a book of the Bible 18:31 that we're all really in to. Because that makes us excited to 18:35 have that worship in the morning My son and I are reading right 18:38 now from this book. It's one of our favorite books. It's called 18:42 The Jesus Storybook Bible. And I just love how it tells the story 18:46 of Jesus. And I'm so excited every morning to read it. 18:49 I like can't wait. Right? Or here's another one of our 18:53 favorites. We have so many I couldn't bring them all, they 18:55 were too heavy. But another one of our favorites is called The 18:58 Incredible Journey, A Daily Devotional. And this one's for 19:00 a little bit older kids. But it has a little devotional each day 19:03 and there's lots of different devotional books that your 19:05 family could choose from. Or maybe you want to read straight 19:07 from the Bible. Maybe you have a favorite Bible character like 19:10 David or Esther or I don't know Paul and you want to read a 19:15 book of the Bible together. That's awesome. Find something 19:18 that really motivates you and you want to do it and that 19:21 really helps. Also your lesson brought up, which is a good 19:24 point, if we try to get a little bit more sleep at night then our 19:27 mornings won't be so hectic because we won't be running so 19:30 late because we'll feel refreshed and ready to wake up. 19:32 That's one thing Miss Michelle needs to work on because I'm 19:34 definitely a night owl. Now Sabbath morning is another time 19:39 and all of this really has to do with, and this is for parents 19:41 right now and kids though. You can help your parents make a 19:44 cool routine. A routine is like how you do things every day or 19:47 most days. So my son and I, we have a morning routine. We have 19:51 a bedtime routine. We have a Sabbath routine for what we do 19:54 every Friday night and then during the day on Sabbath. And 19:57 if you set that routine in place and I'm talking about like 20:00 writing it down and putting it on your refrigerator or printing 20:03 it and putting it on the wall or something so that you can refer 20:06 to it. When you have that routine in place it really helps 20:08 to stay on track for prioritizing the good part 20:11 and that is being with Jesus. You see we need busy people, we 20:16 need helpful people like Martha don't we? But busy people also 20:20 need to take time to be with Jesus every day. And I'm saying 20:23 that to myself in a big way. I liked how the lesson put it. 20:27 My Bible first said we need to be Mary in the morning and 20:31 Martha throughout the day. Isn't that great? Now I think that the 20:35 greatest goal would be to be a combination of Mary and Martha 20:38 all day long and start each moment with Jesus. Don't you? 20:42 You see, one thing is needed and Mary chose the good part which 20:45 will not be taken away from her. Thanks for listening and tagging 20:49 along on this Bible adventure.
