Jesus was invited to 09:14 a Pharisee's house to eat for Sabbath lunch. You heard it 09:21 correctly. Jesus was invited to a Pharisee's house to eat for 09:24 Sabbath lunch. Yeah. And we're going to jump right into the 09:30 Bible and find out why that was. Why would Miss Michelle be so 09:34 surprised that this would happen Any guesses? If you've been 09:39 listening along you might know why it would be confusing for a 09:43 Pharisee to invite Jesus over. Were Pharisees like Jesus' 09:46 biggest fans? Did they believe that he was the Messiah come 09:49 from God? No. So why would they go to the trouble of having warm 09:53 hospitality in inviting him over? Hmm. Kind of seems like a 09:57 setup to me. I don't know. I'm a little suspicious. 10:00 Now it happened [We're in Luke 14 verse 1] Now it happened as 10:04 he went into the house one of the rulers of the Pharisees 10:07 to eat bread on Sabbath that they watched him closely. 10:12 That's awkward. Right? Have you ever felt like people were 10:15 watching you in church or somewhere? Kind of feels 10:18 awkward. I know I used to think that when I was younger and come 10:21 to find out, they weren't watching me, but it just felt 10:23 like it. Jesus could tell all the eyes in the room were on 10:26 him. Why? Let's keep reading. 10:28 And behold a certain man before him had dropsy. 10:33 Now dropsy. That is not a medical term that I was familiar 10:39 with and dropsy makes me think of dropping things but that is 10:42 not, in fact, what it was. Dropsy actually our lesson 10:49 explained to us that dropsy was when part of your body like 10:52 swells up and starts to hurt. So if you think about it kind of 10:56 being like a balloon, which is like a horrible example, but 10:58 like you know maybe if you fell hit your knee and your knee gets 11:03 bigger that's what swelling is. Right? And it's our body's way 11:07 to try to fight infection and fight whatever is hurt there. 11:11 It was really painful for him and the Pharisees had laid a 11:16 trap. They had invited the sick man on purpose because, well, 11:22 they wanted to see what Jesus would do. What day was it? 11:25 That's right. It was the Sabbath So let's see what happens. 11:29 Hmm. The plot thickens. 11:31 ...a man who had dropsy. And Jesus answering spoke to the 11:35 lawyers and the Pharisees saying [Ah] Is it lawful to heal on the 11:39 Sabbath. But they kept silent. 11:43 They knew that doing nice things on the Sabbath was okay to do. 11:47 They knew that the Pharisees' laws were ridiculous. Right? 11:51 They knew in their heart of hearts that the right thing to 11:53 do for Jesus would be to heal that man. So asking a question 11:57 is actually like pretty good strategy right there. Right? 11:59 And he took him and healed him and let him go. 12:05 How uncomfortable it must have been for that man. A room full 12:08 of important people. Right? And this man who just didn't feel 12:13 like he fit in. But Jesus healed him and said, You can go home 12:17 now. He had passed the test. Right? They couldn't argue with 12:23 his logic. Is it okay to do good on the Sabbath? Hmm. Healed him. 12:29 Silence. They had nothing. Verses 4-6 is what we just read. 12:34 We're in Luke chapter 14. Jesus loved all these lawyers and 12:39 Pharisees in this room even though they were trying to get 12:42 him into trouble like right then he still loved them and he 12:45 wanted them so badly to see the truth of God's love and be saved 12:51 And I suppose people watching I'm sure like you know people 12:55 watch like maybe I do sometimes. Okay, you do? Okay. It's kind of 12:59 fun to watch people. They're really interesting. Right? And 13:01 Jesus was watching, looking around the room and he noticed 13:03 a couple of things. The first thing that Jesus noticed was 13:06 that everyone selfishly when they came into the room were 13:09 like trying to get to the best spot at the table or in the room 13:13 and he said in his heart of hearts, time for a parable, time 13:18 for a story to help people see how ridiculous that is to feel 13:22 like you need to be the most important. And that's in verse 8 13:25 When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit 13:32 in the best place lest one more honorable than you be invited by 13:36 him and he who invited you and him comes and says to you [ah, 13:40 you need to give this place to this man] and then you begin 13:43 with shame [and they take you] to the lowest place. But when 13:47 you are invited go sit down at the lowest place so that when he 13:50 who invited you comes he may say to you, friend go up higher. 13:54 Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the 13:57 table with you. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled 14:01 and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 14:03 That makes a lot of sense. Right? Instead of trying to be 14:07 in the best place wouldn't it be nicer if someone actually said 14:10 to you, I'd like you to be in the best place, instead of just 14:13 assuming that that's where you belong. Hmm. That was a pretty 14:16 direct parable wasn't it? The other thing that he noticed was 14:19 that only important people were invited besides the man with 14:23 dropsy who was a trap, who was a setup. Right? Who was trying 14:26 to get Jesus to mess up so that they could get him in trouble. 14:29 There were no poor people there, no sick people besides the man 14:32 and no needy people. And this really bothered Jesus too. It 14:37 made him feel uncomfortable and so he said: 14:42 He also said to him who invited him [we're in verse 12 now] 14:44 When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, 14:47 your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors lest they 14:51 also invite you back and you be repaid. But when you give a 14:55 feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind 14:58 and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you for you 15:03 shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just. 15:06 We call that one-upping. So often maybe we try to do 15:10 something nice for someone and then they feel like they have to 15:12 do something nice for us and then back and forth and back and 15:14 forth and then we're really not doing it to be nice. We're just 15:17 doing it to look good. And I think that's what Jesus was 15:19 saying right there. Hmm. This is getting really awkward. Because 15:24 he had called out two like big things they really liked to do 15:27 that were like not appropriate and not very kind and not very 15:30 Christ like or Christian. Right? But one of the people there 15:35 decided to switch up the subject Have you ever heard someone say, 15:38 So about the weather? They're trying to change the 15:41 conversation to make it less awkward. And he chose a great 15:44 topic. In fact, he chose to talk about heaven. This picture is on 15:48 my dresser at home and I just love it because it makes me 15:51 think of heaven. And I can't wait for heaven. I hope you're 15:53 excited too. So they decided to talk about heaven. Now the Jews 15:58 thought that they were just a shoe-in for heaven. Right? They 16:01 were God's chosen people. They would just get in just because. 16:05 But the Gentiles and Samaritans would obviously not be there. 16:08 Obviously. In fact, they even believed that they might be on 16:11 the outside looking in wishing they were there. And so once 16:15 again, story time with Jesus. Luke chapter 14 verses 16 and 17 16:21 says: Then he said to him a certain man gave a great supper 16:25 and invited many and sent his servant at suppertime to say 16:29 to those who were invited, Come for all things are now ready. 16:32 But they all with one accord began to make excuses. 16:42 Hope you haven't made an excuse before. Mmm-mmm. 16:44 The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground [some 16:47 land] and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused. 16:53 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen and I am going 16:56 to test them out. I ask you to have me excused. Still another 17:01 said [Ah] I've married a wife and therefore I cannot come. 17:04 [Really, okay] So that servant came and reported these things 17:09 to the master. Then the master of the house became angry. 17:12 I would be frustrated too. He had put a lot of effort into the 17:16 party. He'd gotten all the party supplies. They were all set to 17:20 go and then all the people he had invited made up these 17:23 ridiculously rude, selfish excuses. Like you couldn't bring 17:27 your wife to the party or the land's not going to be there 17:31 tomorrow or you have to see your oxen this instant? They just 17:37 didn't make any sense did they? And they were ridiculous excuses 17:43 and thus the person who planned the party was angry and that 17:47 makes sense to me. I would be frustrated too. 17:49 So he said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and 17:54 lanes of the city and bring in here the poor, the maimed, the 17:58 lame and the blind and the servant said, Master it is done 18:01 as you commanded and there is still room. Then the master said 18:06 to the servant, Go out to the highways and hedges and compel 18:09 them to come in that my house may be filled. For I say to you 18:16 that none of those men who are invited shall taste my supper. 18:20 It was too late for them wasn't it? They had made up excuses and 18:25 they no longer were going to be able to enjoy the supper. Now 18:28 Miss Michelle said we were going to talk about three dinners and 18:31 that's right.
