It's about two 08:57 miles from Jerusalem and three of Jesus's closest friends live 09:01 there. Do you remember who they were? That's right. Mary, Martha 09:06 and Lazarus. These three friends were very close to Jesus. 09:12 You see they believed in Jesus and when he was with them he 09:16 didn't have to convince them that he was the Savior, the 09:18 Messiah, the Son of God. They believed he was. He didn't have 09:22 to tell them stories and try to explain things to them. He could 09:26 just relax and be himself. Sadly in this story one of his friends 09:33 falls ill or sick. Do you remember who it was? 09:36 Lazarus. Lazarus became very sick. Jesus was not in Bethany 09:41 at this point. But right away the sisters sent a message to 09:46 Jesus about their brother, Lazarus. This story is in the 09:50 gospel book of John; Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, the fourth 09:58 gospel. It's in John chapter 11 verse 3. John 11 verse 3. And if 10:07 you don't follow along now you can write down the reference and 10:09 read it with your family again later. John 11 verse 3 says: 10:14 Therefore the sisters sent to Him [capital Him, that would be 10:19 Jesus] saying Lord, behold the one who you love is sick. 10:23 The message probably took about a day or so to reach Jesus, 10:28 and Jesus's response came back. 10:30 When Jesus heard that he said, This sickness 10:33 is not unto death, but for the glory of God that the Son of God 10:37 may be glorified through it. 10:39 We know sometimes bad things happen and good things can come 10:43 of it. So when that message went back, the sisters thought, Oh, 10:46 well maybe he's not going to die and he's going to become 10:49 miraculously well. But sadly that's not what happened. 10:53 Verse 5 says: Now loved Mary and her sister and Lazarus, so when 10:59 he heard that Lazarus was sick he stayed two more days in the 11:02 place where he was. Now that doesn't make sense and his 11:05 disciples were quite confused as well. Why didn't he quickly 11:11 go up and put his sandals on and start hiking down the road to 11:13 Bethany to help his friend who he loved? Why didn't he do that? 11:17 They were so confused. 11:24 Then after he said to his disciples let us go to Judea 11:27 again. The disciples said to Him, Rabbi, lately the Jews 11:30 sought to stone you [they wanted to hurt you] and are you going 11:33 there again? Jesus answered, Are there not 12 hours in the day? 11:38 If anyone walks in the day he does not stumble because he sees 11:42 the light of this world, but if one walks in the night he 11:47 stumbles because the light is not in him. These things he said 11:51 and after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps but 11:55 I go that I will wake him up. 11:56 Now when people are sick it's important to sleep. Right? 12:00 To rest, to let your body fight off that whatever is making you 12:05 sick; a virus or a bacteria, who knows, right? So his disciples 12:10 thought, oh, this is a good thing. Jesus is going to say 12:12 wake up, you're okay now. You've slept it off. Right? But this is 12:17 not what happened. 12:18 Then his disciples said, Lord if he sleeps he'll get well 12:21 [that's great] 12:23 However, Jesus spoke of his death but they thought he was speaking 12:26 about Lazarus taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them 12:30 plainly, Lazarus is dead, and I am glad for your sakes that I 12:37 was not there that you may believe. Nevertheless, let us go 12:40 to him. 12:41 He was glad that he was dead?! This made absolutely no sense at 12:45 all. Jesus was surely acting strangely, thought his disciples 12:50 And so they did, they went back to Bethany. 12:56 And there they sent a message to Mary and Martha, but [it says 13:03 here in verse 17] So when Jesus came he found that he had 13:07 already been in the tomb for four days. 13:09 Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb, like buried, 13:13 for four days. 13:15 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away, and many 13:18 of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary to 13:20 comfort them concerning their brother. And now Martha, as soon 13:25 as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him. 13:29 And Mary must not have heard because she didn't go right away 13:32 But Mary was sitting in the house. 13:33 Now Martha said to Jesus, 13:36 Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 13:40 You can imagine the pain in her voice as she said that to Jesus. 13:43 Yet she believed in Him still. And she showed that by what she 13:47 said next. 13:50 But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God 13:54 will give it to you. Jesus said to her. Your brother will rise 13:59 again. Martha said to him, I know that he will arise again in 14:03 the resurrection at the last day Jesus said to her, I am the 14:07 resurrection and the life. He who believes in me though he may 14:11 die shall live. 14:13 What great news that is! Right? 14:15 And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you 14:18 believe this, he asked Martha. She said, Oh yes, Lord, I 14:22 believe that you are the Christ the Son of God who has come into 14:25 the world. And when she had said these things she went her way 14:29 and secretly called Mary her sister saying [Hey come on] the 14:33 teacher has come and is calling for you. As soon as she heard 14:38 that she arose quickly and came to him. Now Jesus had not yet 14:42 come into town but was in the place where Martha met him. 14:45 But when the Jews saw Mary heading out they thought, Oh 14:49 she must be going to the tomb to mourn some more. Let's go with 14:54 her and support her. 14:56 Then when Mary came to Jesus and saw him she too fell down at his 15:01 feet saying Lord if you had only been here my brother would not 15:04 have died. 15:05 When bad things happen in our life it's really hard to make 15:08 sense of them isn't it. 15:09 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who came 15:12 with her weeping, he groaned in spirit and was troubled. 15:15 Jesus was sad too. Well didn't he know that something great was 15:19 going to happen. Of course, he knew because he was the One who 15:22 was going to ask God for that to happen. 15:24 And then He said, Where have you laid him. And they said to Him, 15:28 Come and see Lord. [And] Jesus wept. 15:31 Right there, John chapter 11 verse 35 is the shortest verse 15:36 in the Bible. And it says, Jesus wept. Why would Jesus weep 15:41 though when he knew the end of this story? We don't 15:45 even know it yet. 15:46 Or you may have heard it before. But Jesus wept. You see Jesus 15:50 saw right there in that moment all the pain throughout history 15:54 all the way from Cain killing Abel all the way to the end when 15:59 the people who choose not to follow Jesus will be destroyed. 16:02 And he wept to think of all that heartache that had gone on and 16:09 he wept because his friends were sad. When your friends are sad 16:12 we're sad too aren't we? Now let's continue though because 16:15 we're getting to the great part of the story. 16:17 The Jews said, [Oh] See how he loved him. And some of them said 16:22 Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also kept 16:25 this man from dying. 16:26 Like why did he let him die? This makes no sense. Lazarus had 16:32 been in the tomb how many days? Four days. A tomb back then 16:38 where they would bury people was often like a cave with a 16:40 rock rolled in front of the cave. And you can imagine that 16:45 after four days of not being alive they were concerned with 16:50 Jesus next request. 16:51 Jesus said, Take away the stone. And Martha the sister of him who 16:56 was dead said to him, Lord by this time there is a stench 16:59 [a stink] for he has been dead for four days. But Jesus said to 17:03 her [We're now on verse 40] Did I not say to you that if you 17:08 would believe you would see the glory of God. Then they took 17:13 away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying and 17:16 Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father I thank you that 17:20 You have heard Me and I know that you always hear Me but 17:24 because of the people who are standing by me I said this that 17:28 they may believe that you sent Me. Now when he had said these 17:32 things he cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus come forth. 17:37 And sure enough Lazarus came forth! Now back then they used 17:43 to prepare the body for burial and we do that today too but 17:47 the families generally don't do it, you would go to a funeral 17:49 home and they would do it. But back then they used to wrap the 17:52 body in cloth. Now the only thing I had was toilet paper 17:55 but they would wrap the body in cloth and in that way honor 18:00 the body and embalm that person. They would put special herbs and 18:06 things and the whole body from head to toe will be wrapped that 18:09 way. Right? You may have seen pictures of this in the past. 18:11 But can you imagine having to walk when you're all wrapped up 18:17 cloth. Maybe you could practice with a blanket or something like 18:21 that. Don't want to waste good toilet paper. Right? But it's 18:25 hard to walk, right, when you're all wrapped up tightly. 18:27 But pretty soon out of the tomb came Lazarus waddling out, right 18:34 trying to get free from the grave cloths, but he was alive! 18:38 Wow! I can't believe it. 18:42 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave 18:45 clothes and his face was wrapped with a cloth. 18:48 So he came out 18:49 and hopefully he didn't bump into anything. His whole face 18:51 was even covered. 18:53 Jesus said (the logical thing, of course) Loose him 18:56 and let him go. 18:58 So they did. You can imagine Mary and Martha racing to their 19:02 brother and unwrapping him and I can also imagine the biggest 19:06 family hug of all history. I can just see it now. Oh wow! This is 19:12 so exciting. Most rejoiced at this wonderful thing that had 19:16 happened. They couldn't believe it and through Lazarus' death 19:20 and resurrection before the second coming resurrection many 19:25 people believed in Jesus.
