Please send your Holy Spirit to guide us as 08:31 we talk about this story from your word and as we learn more. 08:34 In your name, we pray, Amen. 08:36 The Poor Rich Man? What a catchy title. Right? This story is a 08:41 super important one because not only did one gospel tell this 08:46 story; two, three, all four gospels told this story about 08:50 this young man. And yet, none of them tell us what his name was, 08:54 although we do know some interesting facts about him. 08:57 You see, he was quite rich. He was quite young. And he was a 09:03 ruler which probably meant in those days that he on the Jewish 09:08 council, a member of the Jewish council. So it was quite a 09:11 prestigious position. Now he knew about Jesus and he was 09:17 there watching as... Remember last week we talked about Jesus 09:21 blessing the children. He was there and he was watching Jesus 09:24 interact with those kids and he thought, Wow, I love that 09:29 happiness that they have and I just wish that Jesus would bless 09:32 me too, he was thinking. I think that a lot of adults at least 09:37 are kids at heart and we want those things too. Right? 09:40 Now what did Jesus mean in Luke 18 verse 17? Let's jump there 09:46 and see what Jesus was talking about. Luke 18 verse 17. Now 09:55 this is the story that we're talking about. Picture the rich 09:58 young ruler there, the children and Jesus said: 10:01 Assuredly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of 10:04 God as a little child will by no means enter it. 10:08 What did Jesus mean by that? My, he wanted to be in God's kingdom 10:12 and he knew that the 10 commandments were really 10:15 important part of being God's kingdom and he also followed all 10:21 the rules that the Jewish rulers and leaders and Pharisees and 10:24 everybody had made up. He obeyed them all to the letter. But 10:29 something was missing and he knew that. So he hurried after 10:33 Jesus as the children left because he wanted to ask the 10:37 most important question to Jesus that was on his heart. We're 10:43 going to be jumping back and forth between gospels a little 10:44 bit so if you want to you could write down these references and 10:48 check them out later. This story is found also in Mark chapter 10 10:52 Mark chapter 10 verse 17. And it says: 10:58 Now as He was going out on the road one came running and knelt 11:02 before Him and asked Him. [Now it's a capital Him so we know 11:05 it's Jesus] Good teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit 11:10 eternal life? 11:11 Jesus what can I do so I can live forever in heaven? Right? 11:16 What an important question. And Jesus right away kind of 11:21 understood where he was coming from. Obviously he really 11:23 understood because He was Jesus. And so he asked him a question. 11:27 In verse 18: So Jesus said to him Why do you call me good? 11:32 No one is good but One and that is God. 11:35 Right then and there Jesus called him out because this rich 11:39 young ruler did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God. You 11:42 could tell that in a way. But he was also questioning it. He was 11:46 trying to figure out what he believed. Only God is good. 11:50 And did the young man really believe that Jesus was the Son 11:54 of God? Hmm. Let's keep reading. Now we're going to jump to 11:59 Matthew because it tells about this story in Matthew as well. 12:02 Matthew 19 verse 17, 19 verse 17 says: So he said to him, Why do 12:08 you call me good? 12:10 We read that part, right, In another gospel. Interesting how 12:12 the stories agree with each other. Right? 12:14 No one is good but One, and that is God. But if you want to enter 12:18 into life keep the commandments. 12:22 That's what Jesus said to the rich, young ruler. Keep my 12:24 commandments. Now right away the rich, young ruler had a 12:29 follow-up question. Well which one? Back then it was so 12:32 confusing because there were so many rules. Way more than 10. 12:35 Right? So in verses 18 and 19 he asked him that follow-up 12:40 question. He said to him, so the rich, young ruler said to Jesus 12:44 When ones? And Jesus said, Well you shall not murder, you shall 12:48 not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear 12:51 false witness, you shall honor your father and mother and you 12:54 shall love your neighbor as yourself. 12:56 Do those sound familiar to you? That's right. He listed several 13:01 of the 10 commandments. And right away the rich, young ruler 13:04 was feeling pretty good about himself wasn't he? He was 13:08 thinking Hmm, verse 20: 13:10 The young man said to him, Oh all these things I have kept 13:14 from my youth. 13:15 He was feeling quite proud of himself; gave himself a little 13:19 pat on the back. Right? Then he said,... 13:25 But what do I still lack? 13:27 He still didn't feel that he had the surety he was sure that he 13:34 had eternal life. And this is where the shocker comes in. 13:39 Jesus really surprised the rich young ruler with his response. 13:44 No one saw it coming. The disciples didn't see it coming. 13:47 The rich young ruler definitely didn't see it coming and anyone 13:50 else who was there watching and listening were all surprised by 13:54 what Jesus said. What, I know you're asking, Miss Michelle, 13:57 what did he say? Here we go, verse 21:... 14:00 Jesus said to him, If you want to be perfect go and sell what 14:05 you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in 14:08 heaven and then come follow me. 14:13 Sell all he had? You know, Jesus saw right into the rich young 14:18 rulers heart and he saw that he had a good heart and that he 14:22 could be a good disciple of Jesus. But he saw that there was 14:25 something inside his heart that was holding him back and you may 14:29 be able to guess what that was at this point when Jesus said 14:32 sell all you have. Now does Jesus call everyone to sell all 14:34 that they have? Not everyone in the Bible had that calling. The 14:39 disciples did. Right? The disciples were called to leave 14:44 all they had and follow Jesus. We'll talk more about that in a 14:46 little bit. You see, what was holding the rich young ruler 14:50 back was that he was breaking the first commandment. Do you 14:55 remember what the first commandment was? One finger, 14:58 God should be first in our life and sadly he loved being rich 15:05 more than he loved God and he wasn't truly thinking about the 15:10 needs of others and loving others as he loved himself. 15:14 He loved his money, he loved his position, he loved the fame that 15:18 it brought him. And now comes the struggle. We had the shocker 15:23 and now we have the struggle. Inside his heart the rich young 15:27 ruler was wrestling with what to do. He knew the right thing 15:30 to do. Jesus had told him exactly what he needed to do. 15:34 But people; what would people think? The members of the Jewish 15:38 council would just totally turn on him. His family would think 15:43 he was crazy, people would think he was crazy to do this. And he 15:48 had to make a choice. And he did. Are you ready to know what 15:53 was inside of his heart? Let's take a look. Inside the rich 15:59 young ruler's heart sadly was love for money. And that's what 16:07 he decided to choose. In the next verse let's read how the 16:11 Bible says it. In verse 22:... 16:13 But when the young man had heard this he went away 16:16 sorrowful for he had great possessions. 16:20 How would we say that today? He had lots of stuff that he 16:26 loved more than he wanted to follow Jesus. Ow! What a sad 16:32 choice. Now the disciples, they were scratching their heads. 16:35 They could not understand this whole thing, because back then 16:39 if you had a lot of money that meant that God had blessed you 16:43 and that you were highly favored and why would you choose to be 16:48 poor and why would you choose that for your life? So not only 16:54 were they confused they were really bummed, they were 16:56 disappointed. Why? They wanted the rich young ruler on their 17:00 team. They thought that he would make them look really good 17:03 Kind of reminds me of how they really wanted Judas to be on 17:06 their team as well. And Judas was especially disappointed 17:10 because he also thought that having the rich young ruler 17:14 would be a great benefit to their idea of what they wanted 17:18 Jesus's ministry to be which was an earthly kingdom to defeat the 17:22 Romans. Right? But we know that that's not what Jesus wanted. 17:27 And in Matthew 19 verses 24 and 25 it says:... 17:34 And again I say to You, it is easier... 17:37 this is Jesus talking to his disciples afterward. Let's 17:40 start in verse 23 actually:... 17:41 Then Jesus said to his disciples Assuredly I say to you that it is 17:45 hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I 17:48 say to you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of 17:52 a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. And 17:56 when his disciples heard this they were greatly astonished 17:59 saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus looked at them and 18:04 said to them, With men this is impossible but will God all 18:09 things are possible. 18:11 Now you may be asking, Miss Michelle, the eye of a needle? 18:15 And for those of you who don't sew out there you may not know 18:18 which part of the needle that is. So here's a needle. This is 18:23 actually an embroidery needle so it's a little bit bigger than 18:25 even the regular needles you might use for regular sewing but 18:28 the eye of the needle is not at the pokey end but at the 18:32 opposite end and you probably can't even see it because it's 18:35 so tiny; there's a little hole there and that's where you put 18:37 your thread through, pull it through and then knot it off and 18:40 that's how you sew. Right? And what Jesus was saying was that 18:45 very difficult for a rich man or woman to give those things up 18:52 for Jesus. It's like this camel, which isn't even a full size 18:56 camel, right, trying to go through this tiny little hole. 19:01 That's ridiculous. Right? And the disciples were thinking that 19:05 it sounded really hopeless. Well will any rich people be in 19:08 heaven or have eternal life? This seems impossible. And yet 19:13 Jesus follows it up with one of my favorite verses in the Bible 19:16 where he says:... 19:18 With men this is impossible but with God all things are possible 19:23 Well, a spoiler alert. Next week we're going to read about a 19:26 story where a rich man made a different choice and showed that 19:30 all things are possible with God Now the disciples were all 19:34 really confused by this.
