Two Rich Men Choose. 09:11 Our first rich man that we're talking about is one that you've 09:16 probably heard the story before. In fact, you probably have sung 09:19 this story before. Someone was a wee little man. That's right, 09:24 Zacchaeus. And we know several things about Zacchaeus. He lived 09:28 in Jericho and he was quite wealthy and he was quite short, 09:32 which is a synonym for wee. He had no friends. That sounds like 09:37 a sad life. Right? And it was because he worked for the Romans 09:41 Who were the Romans? Now if we remember all the way back to 09:45 when we were learning about Daniel you'll remember that he 09:47 had a dream, well the king had the dream about the image; the 09:51 head of gold, the chest of silver, the thighs of bronze. 09:55 Right? And the legs of iron. We're all the way down to the 09:58 legs of iron and that was Rome. The Roman empire was who was 10:02 ruling over the Jews and over much of the world at this time. 10:06 Because the Romans were in charge the Jews had to pay them 10:11 taxes. Zacchaeus was a tax collector. In fact, he wasn't 10:16 just a tax collector, he was the chief tax collector which means 10:20 all the tax collectors reported to him. And he had been 10:25 dishonest in the past. A lot of tax collectors got a bad rap for 10:30 this. Obviously no one likes... People usually generally are not 10:34 excited about giving their money away so they don't like paying 10:36 taxes period and then to top it all off to have to pay more 10:40 because people are being dishonest. Ooo, that's not an 10:43 easy pill to swallow. He had heard about Jesus though 10:49 and, this is 10:51 also a cool fact, the Jordan River is actually pretty close 10:54 to Jericho and Zacchaeus had heard John the Baptist, Jesus's 10:59 cousin, preach. It was at that point that he decided to change. 11:03 Isn't that amazing. You see in Luke chapter 3 verses 12 and 13 11:10 Luke 3 verses 12 and 13 it says: 11:15 Woops, wrong page. There we go. 11:18 The tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, 11:21 Teacher, what shall we do. And he said to them, Collect no more 11:25 than what is appointed for you. 11:27 That's what John the Baptist said to the tax collectors. 11:29 Zacchaeus was among those tax collectors and he stopped taking 11:34 extra. But people were not convinced that he was an honest 11:37 man, that he had made a 180 and changed his life. He had even 11:45 started giving money back to people and they still questioned 11:49 his integrity, whether he was telling the truth. Zacchaeus had 11:52 heard also about Levi Matthew being chosen as one of Jesus's 11:55 12 disciples and did that excite him because he had hope... He 12:00 thought Wow! if Jesus wants a tax collector to be one of his 12:03 special disciples then maybe there's hope for me. Zacchaeus 12:07 knew he was a sinner and he was sorry for real. He was repentant 12:13 Now there was a big crowd in Jerusalem, you see there was a 12:17 feast coming up, I'm sorry, in Jericho because there was a 12:19 feast coming up in Jerusalem and people were traveling to 12:22 Jerusalem via Jericho. And there was also a big crowd because 12:25 Jesus was in town. In Luke chapter 19 verse 3 we'll go to 12:31 today's story. Luke 19 verse 3 says:... 12:33 And he sought [he Zacchaeus] to see who Jesus was but he could 12:38 not because of the crowd for he was short in stature. 12:42 So that didn't stop him. He didn't just throw up his hands 12:46 and go home and feel sorry for himself. 12:47 So he ran ahead and climbed into a sycamore tree to see Him, for 12:52 he was going to pass that way. 12:54 He ran ahead of Jesus, got a head start. This is where it 13:00 comes into play. We talked about this before that Jesus had like 13:02 a sixth sense, we have our five senses. He had like a sixth 13:06 sense about Him and He knew, He could sense, when people, when 13:10 someone needed Him. So in verse 5, it says:... 13:13 And when Jesus came to the place he looked up and saw Zacchaeus. 13:18 And when he saw him He said to him, Zacchaeus, make haste and 13:24 come down for today I must stay at your house. So Zacchaeus made 13:29 haste and came down and received Jesus joyfully. 13:32 He was so excited. Jesus wanted to stay at his house. He knew 13:37 his name! 13:38 But when they saw it they all complained saying, [pshh] He has 13:44 gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner. 13:47 Oh my. I can't believe Jesus would do that. You see back then 13:52 the Jewish priests and rulers had said that tax collectors 13:57 were not allowed in synagogues. They were sinners, like the 14:00 chief of sinners, right up there with the worst of them. But with 14:04 Jesus as a guest at Zacchaeus's home they could worship in their 14:07 home. What a special, special treat to have Jesus visit their 14:11 home. Now Jesus will never force His love on anyone. 14:15 But Zacchaeus was ready for Jesus' love. His heart was ready 14:19 And as we remember from last week's story, do you remember 14:23 our needle? Zacchaeus showed that anything is possible with 14:29 God. Pshu! Right through the eye of the needle, because Zacchaeus 14:33 was, in fact, a rich man who allowed God to change him. 14:37 Ah, that's really good news isn't it? There are amazing rich 14:43 people all over our world who do so much to further the gospel 14:47 and who are kindhearted, give to others and don't put their money 14:53 before their heavenly Father. It's important to remember that. 14:56 And more importantly is to remember that nothing is 15:02 impossible for God. Now I like this part too. Let's keep 15:06 reading to the end of the story. 15:08 It says, So, oh so he stopped right there [Zacchaeus stopped] 15:15 and he stood, and he said to the Lord, Look Lord I will give half 15:19 of my goods to the poor and if I have taken anything from 15:22 anyone by false accusation, [dishonestly], I will restore 15:27 fourfold. 15:28 So let's say that Zacchaeus had taken, here's some money, it's 15:33 fake money. I had to bring the fake stuff because my son, coins 15:37 are too small for him so I have more fake money coins than I 15:40 have real coins. That's kind of sad to say. But that's all right 15:43 Let's say that Zacchaeus had stolen one nickel from you. Are 15:50 you ready for this one? So if he had stolen one nickel what's 15:53 fourfold of a nickel. Okay let's do the math. Four times five 15:58 Right? Instead of giving you one nickel back, five cents in 16:00 American money he would have given you 20 cents back which 16:05 would be four nickels or how many dimes? Two dimes. Right? 16:12 And in that way he was over compensating to show that he was 16:17 really, really, really sorry for what he had done. People 16:21 couldn't believe their ears. And let's keep reading... 16:27 Restore fourfold. We're in verse 9: Luke 19:9... 16:30 And Jesus said to him, [to Zacchaeus] Today salvation has 16:34 come to this house because he also is a son of Abraham. 16:38 For the Son of man has come to seek and save that which 16:41 was lost. 16:43 It's always people who realize their sin and realize that 16:49 they're sinners that can have true repentance from 16:52 Jesus. Well my 16:53 time's getting away from me. Let's jump to story number two 16:56 about the second rich man who had to choose. Jesus was 16:59 preaching and a person asked him for a little help with solving a 17:03 problem between him and his brother. You see, God had given 17:05 some special rules and one of them was that when the father 17:10 died the older son would get two times as much property as the 17:13 other sons. Now to us that doesn't sound fair. It's not a 17:16 rule that we have today. Right? But it was part of the 17:18 birthright blessing, something you could research with your 17:21 family, and it was an important thing. It was a way to honor the 17:24 first born son. And this son who was talking with Jesus, he 17:28 thought that his brother had been unfair in how he had split 17:32 up the property and so he came to complain to Jesus about it 17:35 and to ask for his advice. And this is what Jesus said. 17:38 Luke 12 verse 13: That's the story. All right, we'll keep 17:42 reading. Here's Jesus' response in verse 14: 17:44 But He said to him, Man who made me a judge or an arbitrator over 17:50 you? And he said to them, Take heed and beware of covetousness 17:53 for one's life does not consist of the abundance of things he 17:57 possesses. 17:58 He could see into that man's heart and in that man's heart He 18:01 saw selfishness and covetousness That means that he wanted the 18:04 things that were meant to be his brother's. And of course at this 18:08 point Jesus tells a story, a parable. I love it when Jesus 18:12 uses these to illustrate his point. You see there was a rich 18:16 man Jesus said... 18:18 who harvested so much food from his farm that he couldn't get it 18:20 into all of his barns. [What to do. And so in Luke 12 verse 18:25 18 and 19 it says...] So the rich man said to himself I will 18:28 do this. I will pull down all my barns and build greater barns 18:33 and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will 18:36 say to my soul, Soul, you have so many goods laid up for many 18:40 years. Take your ease, eat, drink and be merry. 18:46 The rich man didn't even take into consideration that 18:49 everything that we have is a blessing from God. That food 18:52 really belonged to God. And he didn't think about the poor 18:55 people in his community or in other communities around him 18:58 that could have really benefited from that extra food. 19:00 Instead, he was very greedy. And he couldn't have known what 19:05 was coming up. Here's what was coming up. 19:07 But God said to him, Fool this night your soul will be required 19:11 of you, [that meant he was going to die that night]. Then whose 19:24 will those things be which you have provided. So is he who lays 19:28 up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. 19:32 He was going to die that night. He didn't know that. And yet he 19:36 was only thinking of himself. Jesus called out the selfishness 19:41 in both the brothers and really in all of us. It's interesting 19:45 because we might think, Oh that's crazy. Why would you tear 19:48 down all the barns and build new ones but I was on a tour once, a 19:51 boat tour, in a certain town and people actually do this. Very 19:55 rich people buy these huge mansions. Maybe they have a big 19:58 party, one big party, and then they tear the whole mansion down 20:02 and build one that they like better. Isn't that crazy? 20:05 I thought so. Jesus really challenges us to think about 20:09 once again what's in our heart. And He asks us to really 20:16 contemplate that. Once again, nothing wrong with being rich, 20:19 God blesses us with money. It's what we do with it and the 20:23 attitude of our heart that matters. We all need to examine 20:27 our hearts for selfishness and covetousness. Selfishness, 20:32 thinking only about ourselves and covetousness, wanting things 20:35 that other people have.
