00:31 (Miss Ruthie) Hello boys and girls. Welcome back to Starting
00:33 with Jesus where we want to encourage you to start
00:36 everything you do with Jesus. Now we have an exciting program
00:41 for you today. Miss Michelle is going to be telling a story
00:45 about some workers in a vineyard and Pastor Moe is going to be
00:51 continuing his story. So you won't want to miss that. Now I
00:55 want to remind you about something that you might not

05:57 Hi, we're the Flying Eagles Pathfinder Club of Bristol,
06:01 Tennessee. There's not a lot of us but we still want to make a
06:05 difference for other kids in the world. Our parents got an ADRA
06:09 Kids gift catalog in the mail. And when we saw it we knew we
06:13 wanted to help. The catalog had a few mission projects so we
06:18 chose chickens and it said "Can you imagine your
06:22 whole family living
06:23 on just one dollar and fifty cents a day? You can probably
06:27 find that much change in between your sofa cushions right now.
06:29 There are many reasons that families must survive on so
06:33 little. But you can make things easier by choosing this gift.
06:37 and their eggs can be sold at the market so families have more
06:40 money for food, clothes and other necessities." We also chose
06:46 goats and it said "Many children live on farms and help their
06:52 parents take care of farm animals like goats. These goats
06:55 provide milk and cheese. The yummy cheese can be eaten or
06:59 sold at the market year round so that no one in the family
07:03 ever goes hungry. As the goats have babies, the farm will start
07:08 to grow. If you team up with your friends and each buy a
07:12 share you can get a family of goats."
07:16 Last we chose wells and it said "You can help dig a well in many
07:23 countries. Kids don't have clean water to drink so sometimes they
07:30 have to dig in the ground for hours to find enough water to
07:35 fill one bucket. In other places kids have to drink dirty water,
07:41 yuk, and it often makes them sick. You can be a hero who
07:46 gives kids clean drinking water so they can stay healthy and
07:51 hydrated." Well we got right to work. Each of us participated
07:57 however we could and by the end we had made a poster, laminated
08:01 the different missions and taped it to the poster board. Then we
08:06 hung decorated index cards on
08:08 mason jars to collect money for each mission. Last we asked
08:12 permission to set it out in the church lobby. After a few short
08:16 weeks we had collected $345.60. That's more money than we
08:23 thought we could ever collect. We had enough for almost eight
08:27 chickens, four goats and $160 towards a well. We praise God
08:38 that he has missions that even us kids can help with.

09:03 (Miss Michelle) One of the things that I love to learn
09:06 about is a certain part of the body. Maybe you can guess what
09:09 it is. Hmm. I think you can. It's the brain. The brain is an
09:15 amazing organ and it is so cool to learn about it. There's
09:21 different parts and they all have such important jobs. Have
09:25 you ever wondered what's inside God's brain? What kind of
09:30 thoughts does God think? Today we're going to talk about that.
09:34 Let's pray.
09:35 Dear heavenly Father, we thank you for loving us. We ask that
09:38 you are here with us right now as we dive into your word and
09:42 read a very interesting story that doesn't really match how
09:45 our brains think. We thank you for sending your Holy Spirit.
09:49 In your name we pray, Amen.
09:50 You see, humans think very differently than God, especially
09:56 since sin. Right? We were created in God's image and God
09:59 wanted our brains to think just like His does. And yet, God
10:04 thinks different thoughts than we do. What kind of thoughts
10:07 does God think? Isaiah 55 verses 8 and 9 says:
10:11 For my thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways my
10:19 ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the
10:23 earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than
10:27 your thoughts. Then He also says in the next book of the Bible,
10:32 Jeremiah, this is one of my favorites, maybe it's one of
10:35 your favorites as well. In Jeremiah 29 verse 11, what does
10:40 He think about us? For I know the thoughts that I think toward
10:44 you, says the Lord; thoughts of peace and not of evil to give
10:49 you a future and a hope. The whole time that Jesus was on
10:54 earth He was trying to show us what God was like, how God
10:58 thinks, how Jesus thinks. And in today's story He really threw us
11:05 a curve ball in telling a story that helps us understand that
11:09 and yet confuses us because we don't understand completely how
11:13 God thinks. You see, back then we know that the Pharisees were
11:17 about the rules, rules, rules. Jesus didn't obey all of their
11:21 made up rules, made up human rules. He obeyed his heavenly
11:24 Father's rules. They ruled Him out as the Messiah because He
11:28 didn't obey their rules. The rich young ruler also walked
11:32 away because he didn't agree with what Jesus was asking him
11:36 to do. And the disciples were even confused about Jesus and
11:40 His thought towards them. In Mark chapter 9, Mark chapter 9
11:47 verses 33 and 34 it says, Mark 9:33 and 34:
11:54 Then he came to Capernaum and when he was in the house he
11:57 asked then, What was it that you disputed among yourselves in the
12:00 road, and they kept silent for on the road they had been
12:03 disputing among themselves over who would be the greatest.
12:06 They were more worried about who would be at His right hand when
12:09 He conquered the Romans, which wasn't even going to happen,
12:12 then they were about how God thinks and about what God cares
12:16 about. So Jesus told this story. This story is found in Matthew
12:21 chapter 20, Matthew chapter 20 and I brought something to help
12:28 tell this story that we're going to be using. Maybe you've
12:32 learned about it in school. Maybe you like digital better,
12:36 but I think that analog is important to learn as well.
12:39 You see there was a rich farmer and he had a large vineyard.
12:43 What do they grow in vineyards? They grow grapes and we have a
12:49 lot of vineyards around where I live. Not as many maybe as in
12:51 California or maybe other places in different countries but here
12:55 we have quite a few vineyards around. And he had so many
13:02 grapes that he needed to hire extra help to harvest those
13:06 grapes. And we'll pick up the story in Matthew 20 and verse 1:
13:09 For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out
13:13 early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. Now
13:17 when he had agreed with the laborers to a denarius a day he
13:21 sent then into his vineyard. A denarius; so one coin.
13:25 A denarius back then would have the equivalent of about a day's
13:28 labor, a day's worth of labor. So today's minimum wage is
13:32 right around $7.25 or so. If you multiply that by how many hours
13:35 you work you would find out how much that would be in today's
13:40 money. And they thought that sounded like a fair deal because
13:42 back then to get a denarius for one day's labor was fair.
13:46 So they went to work in the vineyard picking the grapes.
13:49 Verse 3 continues the story: And he went out at about about the
13:54 third hour. Now this is a little confusing to Miss Michelle
13:57 because the third hour I might think 3 o'clock but then I think
14:01 3 a.m. That doesn't make any sense. Right? No one's up at
14:05 3 a.m. and it says that he already hired people early in
14:08 the morning in the third hour. So early in the morning was
14:12 probably, pardon me, my minute hand is giving me trouble, was
14:16 probably around 6 o'clock. So small hand pointing to the 6.
14:19 The third hour would have been three hours after the work day
14:23 started. So that would be 7, 8, 9 o'clock. So 9 a.m. the farmer
14:29 went out and he realized that...
14:33 In the third hour he saw others standing out in the market place
14:36 and he said to them, You also go into the vineyard and whatever
14:39 is right I will give you.
14:41 So they went. Now he didn't tell them how much he was going to
14:43 pay them, did he? They had to trust him that he would make
14:48 fair pay for them. And so they did. He realized that he needed
14:52 more workers; there were so many grapes to pick. Then in verse 5
14:56 it continues: Again in about the sixth hour... So six hour after
15:00 they had started at six would be at noon. So at noon once again
15:03 he went out and asked more people who were standing there
15:05 to come and help him work. And again at the ninth hour which
15:09 would be three more hours, right? One, two three, at
15:11 3 o'clock in the afternoon he asked again for more people to
15:15 come and help him and he didn't tell them how much he was going
15:18 pay them. It says:... Again he went in the sixth and the ninth
15:22 hour and did likewise and,... we're in verse 6, and at about
15:26 the 11th hour he went out and found others standing idle.
15:28 I don't mean they were just standing around, they weren't
15:30 moving. If your car is idling it means it's staying in one place.
15:33 So once again we're to the 11th hour. So we started at six so
15:38 let's count 11, ready, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. So
15:43 this is 5 o'clock in the evening he still realized that they
15:47 weren't going to finish in time and he needed more help to push
15:50 through to finish that day. And so at the 11th hour he went and
15:55 hired more people and said to them, Why have you been standing
15:59 here idle all day? And they said to him, Because no one has hired
16:02 us. And he said to them, Well you also go into the vineyard
16:05 and whatever is right you will receive. So when evening had
16:09 come the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the
16:13 laborers and give them their wages. Okay, this was natural.
16:16 They would pay as they went so at the end of that day, it was
16:20 time to pay them what they were due. Okay, this is where the
16:26 story gets interesting. Do you like stories with a surprise
16:29 ending? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I like to be
16:32 able to guess what the ending is but I don't think, unless
16:35 you've heard the story before, you would guess it correctly.
16:37 So what does he do? Well he tells his servant there he says
16:44 to him... And we should begin with the last and go to the
16:51 first. Sound familiar? Jesus has said that before. Right? And so
16:56 when those who came who were hired at the 11th hour came they
17:00 received a denarius. And the people who'd been working all
17:05 day thought, well that's interesting. And then when they
17:10 received it, or no, let's back up. And then when the first came
17:15 they supposed that they would receive more. They thought well
17:17 if everybody else, the people who came at 3 p.m., noon, the
17:20 people who came at 9, if they all got a denarius, which is
17:23 what it says, then we must be getting a little more. I mean we
17:27 worked really hard, 12-hour day, 6 to 6. But here's what happened
17:33 When the first came, we're in verse 10, they supposed they
17:36 would receive more and they likewise received each a
17:40 denarius, which is what had been agreed upon. But they were a
17:43 little frustrated. When they received it they complained
17:47 against the land owner saying, These men who worked only one
17:52 hour and you made them equal to us who have born the labor of
17:56 the heat all day long. But the land owner answered them,
18:00 And he answered one of them and said, Friend, I'm doing you no
18:06 wrong. Did you not agree to work for the day for me for a
18:10 denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to
18:20 this last man the same as to you Is it not lawful for me to do
18:25 what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am
18:30 good. Whoa! A picture into how God's brain thinks. And this is
18:37 how Jesus ended this story. So the last will be first and
18:42 the first will be last. For many are called but few are chosen.
18:48 What does this mean, Miss Michelle? It doesn't make any
18:52 sense. We would get really frustrated if that happened
18:56 to us today. Right. If we worked all day and got paid the same as
19:00 someone who worked for one hour. I bet the workers who started
19:03 later in the day were so glad that they had trusted the
19:06 farmer to be fair with their wages. Here is what I learned
19:11 from this story. No one can ever work hard enough, be good enough
19:18 for God's kingdom. You can work your whole life and you can't do
19:23 it on your own. You see Jesus is showing in this parable that
19:28 no matter how many hours you work, you cannot earn salvation.
19:33 You cannot earn the reward and yet there is only one way to
19:40 earn that, to be able to go to heaven, have eternal life, which
19:44 is like what the wages in this story would represent. And we
19:47 find that way, that one way, in Acts, all throughout the Bible
19:51 obviously, but also in Acts chapter 4 verse 12. Acts chapter
19:57 4 verse 12 says:... Nor is there salvation in any other for there
20:03 is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must
20:09 be saved. Who is that name? Let's hear it, loud in the back,
20:12 Jesus. The only way that we can be saved is through Jesus.
20:15 Acts 16 verse 13 also reiterates or reemphasizes this fact.
20:21 Acts 16 verse 13 says:... Sorry. Acts 16 verse 13:... I think I
20:29 may have written down the wrong Oh here it is. It's verse 31. I
20:33 flipped the numbers. Have you ever done that before? So they
20:35 said: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved,
20:39 you and your household. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. That's
20:44 it folks. Sinless Jesus lived for us. He lived the life that
20:51 we can't and He died the death that we deserve. He died and in
21:00 His death He provided our salvation. Praise God. Glory to
21:06 His name. Isn't it amazing to see inside a little picture of
21:10 what is inside Jesus' brain? And his heart. Right? That he would
21:16 do that for us. That God would make that plan before the
21:19 foundation of the world, before creation, he had a plan to save
21:22 us in case we messed it up, which we did. And you can
21:27 imagine that the disciples and everyone who was listening were
21:30 majorly confused by this story. We could think about this story
21:34 for a really long time and still not completely understand the
21:37 amazing love that Jesus has for us. It's not fair, but that's
21:42 the amazing thing about it. For by grace you have been saved
21:45 through faith. Ephesians 2 verse 8. Let's thank God today and
21:50 praise Him for His salvation.

24:35 Hi kids, this is Moe. Last week we talked about what happened to
24:40 a very close friend of ours in the mission field. As we were
24:46 trying to help him, my father, in the process, got kidnapped.
24:49 Now we decided that things weren't looking good because we
24:54 hadn't seen our father. So we decided to pray. And we prayed
24:58 and we said, Dear Lord, Please whatever is going on help our
25:03 dad to be okay. And you know what my friends? God listens
25:08 and He can even talk to kidnappers. Now we didn't know
25:12 this but they were driving my father down to the river. And
25:15 whenever they would drive you down to the river they would
25:18 take all your money and they will throw you out and hurt you
25:21 really bad. So we prayed and we said Lord please and just at
25:26 that moment God started to impress upon the head kidnapper
25:30 that if he was going to touch my father he was going to mess with
25:35 God and things were not going to look good for him. So he turned
25:40 to the other people that were in the car that were kidnapping my
25:43 dad and he says, You guys, we cannot touch this person because
25:49 this person is a man of God. And at that moment someone of the
25:53 people that were there in the car, No way, we never do this.
25:56 We always finish the job. But he said No, God has shown me that
26:03 we cannot touch this man. And my friends, I want to tell you
26:07 what, whenever you pray God listens. You might feel stuck,
26:11 you might be in a hard situation in your life but guess what?
26:15 Jesus understands and if you go to Him He always knows what you
26:21 need. Next week we're going to see what happens when those
26:24 kidnappers get converted. Talk to you next week and God bless.
