Miss 09:29 Michelle is a teacher so yep, I do like to do some teaching 09:31 sometimes. Now we know that since the beginning of time, 09:35 since Jesus created Adam and Eve and sin happened the sacrificial 09:40 system started. And those are two big words. Right? It means 09:43 that Adam and Eve brought a lamb and sacrificed it or killed it 09:47 and this lamb represented Jesus, the Lamb of God who would take 09:51 away the sin of the world. Sounds gross and really sad, 09:54 doesn't it? It is. But let's think about it. The sacrifice 09:58 that Jesus had to make for us was really sad and what he had 10:01 to go through was excruciatingly painful. Now let's fast forward. 10:06 The Jews were in Egypt and a big event happened where God led 10:11 them out of Egypt. We call that the Passover. And that was 10:14 another thing that pointed to Jesus. You see, the Jews, 10:18 or the Israelites who were in Egypt, it was the last plague. 10:24 Do you remember this? It was going to be death of the first 10:28 born. And if they painted blood on their door post that 10:31 represented Jesus's blood covering them, once again 10:34 pointing to Jesus and if there was blood on the door post their 10:37 first born son didn't die. The Passover was celebrated over 10:42 time and little did the people in Jesus' time know that the 10:46 most important Passover was coming up in just a few days. 10:50 Jesus knew that the lamb that would be sacrificed in just a 10:54 few days was Him, the true lamb of God. The priests were already 11:00 plotting His death. How lonely Jesus must have felt to know 11:04 this and yet to tell even His disciples and His followers this 11:09 and feel like no one was listening. They wanted an 11:11 earthly kingdom, they wanted an earthly king, they wanted 11:14 freedom from the Romans and when Jesus would tell them the truth 11:17 it just went right over their heads, in one ear, out the other 11:21 And the Passover was coming up so soon, Jesus' death was coming 11:26 so soon. Six days away was the Passover and Jesus was on his 11:29 way to Jerusalem. But, of course He had to stop at Bethany. Do 11:33 you remember who lived at Bethany? If you said Lazarus, 11:37 Mary and Martha, you were right. Three of his dearest friends. 11:43 It was at Bethany that Lazarus was raised from the dead. There 11:47 was another resident or person who lived in Bethany who also 11:50 owed Jesus a debt of gratitude and his name was Simon. He was a 11:56 Pharisee and he had been healed by Jesus of leprosy, that 12:01 horrible skin condition that would lead to your death 12:05 eventually. Simon was a disciple of Jesus but he wasn't fully 12:08 committed. He still hadn't changed how he thought to how 12:12 Jesus thinks and he still thought he was a pretty good 12:15 person. You know, except for the leprosy bit and maybe a couple 12:18 of little things that he'd done. But he had many desperately evil 12:22 secret sins and he was holding onto those things and still on 12:28 the outside looked like he was a really good guy but in his 12:31 heart he had some very wicked things there. He thought, to pay 12:37 Jesus back, to make it right for what He had done for Simon, 12:42 he would have a big party, a big feast for Jesus and why a party 12:46 would pay someone back for healing you from a desperately 12:49 horrible disease is beyond me, but in his mind, Simon thought 12:52 that this would help, I don't know, make up for that or pay 12:56 Jesus for that. And Lazarus was invited and Mary was there and 13:01 Martha was there. She was in charge of the food. Surprise, 13:03 surprise. Many people were in Bethany at this time because 13:06 one, they were headed to Passover and two, they wanted 13:09 to see Jesus. They also kind of wanted to see Lazarus too, you 13:12 see, they knew he had been dead for four days and they wanted to 13:15 know what it was like to be dead Now we know because it says in 13:18 Ecclesiastes 9 verses 5 and 6: For the living know that they 13:23 will die, but the dead know nothing and they will have no 13:26 more reward for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their 13:30 love, their hatred and their envy is now perished. Nevermore 13:33 will they have a share in anything done under the sun. 13:36 We know that once you die, you don't know anything. In fact, 13:40 when Lazarus died he didn't know anything. Nothing was going on 13:45 his brain, his soul didn't leave his body and go up to heaven. 13:48 He stayed in the grave and was sleeping until Jesus woke him up 13:51 four days later. The same thing happens when our loved ones die. 13:55 It's so sad for us but for them it's a nap till Jesus comes and 14:01 the next thing that they know Jesus will be coming in the 14:04 clouds of glory. Isn't that amazing? I'm so glad that we 14:08 have that hope for our relatives Isn't that great? Now they 14:14 wanted to know what it was like to be dead and Lazarus would 14:16 have said, Well I don't know. I didn't know what was happening. 14:19 I just woke up and Jesus was there. But it is Jesus and He is 14:22 the one who raised me from the dead and He is the Son of God. 14:25 So he did witness to people in that way. Now back to the feast. 14:28 The guests came in and they lay on these couches, they were 14:32 around these really low tables. I don't know if you've ever been 14:34 to a restaurant before that has a low table that you sit on the 14:38 floor. Their feet were faced away from the table and they 14:40 were just kind of lounging there and eating. It was odd though 14:44 because no one was sent to wash Jesus' feet which was a custom 14:47 at those times. We'll talk about that more in the future but it 14:51 was kind of odd that that didn't happen. But the food was great, 14:53 of course; Martha was in charge. And they were all enjoying that 14:58 together. And that's when Mary came in. Jesus had done so much 15:02 for Mary. He had scared away demons out of her multiple times 15:07 He had loved her even though she lived in sin and had made some 15:11 really horrible choices. He had raised her brother from the dead 15:16 and she was so thankful and she truly had a repentant heart. She 15:21 knew she was a sinner and she knew that she needed Jesus. 15:24 She had been listening, you see, to what Jesus was talking about. 15:29 Jesus had told his disciples and she had been there too that he 15:33 would die soon. They kind of just didn't believe him. They 15:37 kind of were like okay, yeah, yeah, mm-hmm, we all die, mm-hmm 15:40 But she was listening. She also heard people talking about how 15:44 he was going to become king soon because they wanted him to be 15:49 king soon and be the earthly kingdom and defeat the Romans. 15:51 Right? In John is where we find the part of the story that we're 15:56 going to read, but it's very interesting to learn that all 15:58 four gospels also have this story. John 12 verse 3:... 16:02 Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard and 16:07 anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. 16:11 And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. But the perfume that they had back 16:35 then was a little different than the perfume that we have today. 16:37 You see this spikenard was very expensive and you can buy some 16:42 very expensive perfumes today. Right? This spikenard that she 16:46 had bought actually took a whole years' worth of her wages to 16:49 buy this. Like she worked a whole year to get this much 16:53 money. She had heard Jesus talk about His death and she wanted 16:56 to use that to put on His body after He died but then she got 17:01 to thinking about it and we need to think about this too. Should 17:03 we thank people and tell them how much they mean to us after 17:07 they die or while their still alive? She wanted to be the 17:10 first one to celebrate Him as king and so she put the perfume 17:16 on Jesus. Now today if you just spray it, a little bit will come 17:20 out. Right? But back then they had perfumes a little different 17:24 and they would actually break it now I'm not going to break this 17:26 but they would break it and you couldn't use it again. So it was 17:30 like a one-time deal. So she did she broke it. Matthew and Mark 17:34 say that she anointed Jesus' head with it and Luke and John 17:37 say that she put it on Jesus' feet. Now does it really matter? 17:41 No. The important part was she was anointing Him and showing 17:44 Him that she believed Him and that she was celebrating Him 17:48 and thanking Him. At first no one noticed but you know how 17:50 perfume is. I just sprayed one little spurt of this perfume and 17:53 the whole room is starting to smell like Miss Michelle. Pretty soon everybody stopped because they smelled it 18:08 and they knew that this was some very costly perfume. No one said 18:14 anything until Judas spoke up and sadly he didn't have nice 18:18 things to say. John 12 verses 4-6:... 18:22 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would 18:26 betray Him said, Why is this fragrant oil not sold for 300 18:29 denarii and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared 18:33 for the poor but because he was a thief and had the money box 18:37 and he used to take what was put in it. So he was like the 18:42 treasurer of the group and he would take money instead of 18:46 giving it to the poor. So he thought that would have been 18:48 great money for him. Right? Wow! How selfish. And Mary was just 18:52 crushed. She felt terrible. She wanted it to be a secret but she 18:56 had forgotten about how the smell would fill the whole room. 18:58 How embarrassing. Jesus looked right at Judas and Judas 19:05 realized the Jesus knew; He knew his heart and he knew that he 19:09 had been dishonest even though Judas thought he was being 19:11 sneaky and getting away with it. And at that point Judas left. 19:16 And he hurried away to Jerusalem to offer to help capture Jesus, 19:20 to the high priest. 19:23 But Jesus said, Let her alone. She has kept this for the day 19:27 of my burial. For the poor you will always have with you but me 19:34 you will not always have. 19:36 Now there was another person in the crowd who also questioned 19:40 her choice there and that was Simon the host of the party and 19:46 he said something as well, which was not kind. He said in Luke 7 19:53 verses 36-39:... 19:54 Then one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him... 19:58 Let's fast forward. And she began to wash his feet she 20:03 was doing that... 20:04 And when the Pharisee [that would be Simon] who had invited 20:06 him saw this he spoke to himself saying, This man, if He were a 20:09 prophet, He would know of what manner this woman is who is 20:13 touching Him, for she is a sinner.
