It's also called a 06:55 bee hive stack or a round stack because of the shape that it has 07:00 This kind of wood pile is stacked very carefully and you 07:04 don't need a shed or a rack or anything to hold the wood in 07:08 place. You simply start by sticking a branch in the ground 07:11 and then you lay wood logs all around it. You keep piling and 07:16 stacking up from there. Once you have a good little round wall 07:19 you start filling in the center with more logs. You can store a 07:23 lot of firewood in a small space this way. The whole thing is 07:27 really strong and secure. It can stand against tough winds and 07:32 rain. Do you know what happens to a piece of wood if it's left 07:36 on the ground by itself? In your name we pray, Amen. 10:06 Well today's lesson, as you may know, is called Cleaning the 10:12 Temple Again. That's right. You see. It's Passover time and 10:17 people from all over the world have come to Jerusalem to 10:20 celebrate this special Jewish event. And I think it's a really 10:24 cool event to celebrate in general because it's a 10:27 historical event in the lives of all Christians as well. Right 10:29 Jesus knew that he was going to die soon and usually, he stayed 10:34 away from Jerusalem throughout His ministry, if you've noticed. 10:37 But during the last week of His life He spent an extra amount of 10:40 time there. He knew that people would need to be paying 10:44 attention to the events that were coming up for their 10:46 salvation. Right? So Jesus went to the temple and talked just 10:52 like He did when He was really young. Right? Three years 10:55 earlier, you see, He'd come to this very same temple and He had 10:59 found it not in a good place. Do you remember what was 11:03 happening? That's right. There were money changers there and 11:05 they were trying to sell people animals and the animals were so 11:08 loud. They were trying to sell to people for prices that were 11:11 ridiculously high and they were making a very big profit. And do 11:16 you remember what happened? He drove them out and He said this 11:19 house should be a house of prayer. Right? And you have made 11:22 it a crazy place. Now when he came back this time, three years 11:27 later, it was even worse than before. Can you hear it now? 11:32 Can you imagine if you came to your church and it sounded more 11:35 like a barn than a church? That's what it was like. 11:38 Wasn't it? And Jesus just looked around the temple and his gaze 11:42 just stopped everyone. Maybe your mom or dad or teacher has a 11:47 gaze that works kind of like that but I don't think anyone 11:50 has the Jesus gaze. We're going to pick up the story in Mark 11:54 chapter 11 verse 15, 11 verse 15 says:... 11:58 So they came to Jerusalem and when Jesus went into the temple 12:01 He began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple 12:05 and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of 12:09 those who sold doves. He would not allow anyone to carry wares 12:12 through the temple. [That's right] And then He taught saying 12:18 to them, Is it not written my house shall be called a house of 12:22 prayer for all nations. But you have made it a den of thieves. 12:27 Because these people were selling the animals for 12:30 ridiculously high prices. 12:32 And the scribes and chief priest heard of it and they sought how 12:34 they might destroy Him. 12:35 This made them very upset that He was disrupting their temple 12:39 services. 12:40 For they feared Him because all the people were astonished at His 12:43 teaching. And when evening had come He went out of the city. 12:47 So once again though, we know from the Bible and from other 12:53 books of the Bible, it says that when He drove them out once 12:59 again the priests and rulers left. The money changers left, 13:02 everybody ran away. You would think that they wouldn't be 13:04 scared of Him this time. He'd already done this once before. 13:06 Right? But they still were scared and people brought in 13:09 sick people once again, like the first time. And no longer could 13:15 you hear arguing, no longer could you hear noisy animals. 13:19 All you heard now is happy people headed to see Jesus. 13:22 And we know this because it talks about it in the book of 13:25 Matthew. So let's back up to the book of Matthew chapter 21. 13:29 I love that there's four gospels that tell the story of Jesus's 13:32 life on earth because they all add a super interesting 13:35 perspective and details that maybe somebody else forgot. 13:40 Matthew 21 verse 14 says:... 13:44 And then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple and He 13:46 healed them. 13:48 But when the chief priest and scribes saw the wonderful things 13:51 that He did and the children crying out in the temple and 13:53 saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were indignant. 13:57 Do you know what the word indignant means? Maybe you've 14:00 heard the word furious, maybe you've heard the words roaring 14:05 mad. Those would all be synonyms for the word indignant. 14:07 They were not just a little bit upset. They were super angry. 14:10 And said to Him, Do you hear these things they are saying? 14:14 And Jesus said to them. Yes. Have you not read, Out of the 14:18 mouths of babes and nursing infants you have perfected 14:22 praise. 14:24 Now you see this was actually from the book of Isaiah. I'm 14:29 sorry, Psalms, it was from the book of Psalms so He was 14:32 actually quoting a prophecy in relation to Him. Oh, they got so 14:39 upset that that He would say that to them. Oh! So frustrated 14:44 they were. But you couldn't scare Jesus and they could see 14:48 that. They thought maybe they could intimidate Him. Right? And 14:52 it wasn't working. So they decided to try to trick Him. 14:55 And if you recall they've tried this before but apparently they 14:58 decided to try it again. So that night they all were trying to 15:02 think of a trick question, that no matter how He answered it 15:05 He'd get it wrong and they could show that He was wrong and they 15:08 were right. Right? So let's see how that goes for them. We're 15:12 to Tuesday now in that week that is going to take this whole 15:15 quarter to take about. The day of Tuesday. 15:19 On Tuesday morning Jesus headed back to the temple to spend time 15:22 there. And they were ready with their trick question for him. 15:26 Are you ready to hear what it is? Here it is:... 15:28 Matthew 21 verse 23:...[They were feeling pretty proud of 15:32 themselves here.] Now when He came to the temple the chief 15:36 priest and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was 15:38 teaching and said [Ah excuse me Jesus, ah] by what authority are 15:43 you doing these things and who gave you this authority? 15:48 Hmm. If He said God then they would say you know, No, 15:54 like you're wrong. 15:56 You cannot claim to be from God. And then of course He wasn't 15:58 going to say Satan which wouldn't make any sense 16:01 whatsoever, so any way that He answered, My own authority, Oh 16:05 my like that wouldn't give Him any credibility. Right? But 16:10 Jesus was very intelligent and He knew their tricks. And so 16:14 instead of answering the question either way, truthfully 16:18 He would have said, From God and they would have been upset. 16:21 He decided to switch it up on them. And so in verse 24 it says 16:26 Jesus answered and said to them: I also will tell you one thing, 16:31 which if you tell me I likewise will tell you of what authority 16:36 I do these things. 16:37 So he said, Well, how this? I'll ask you a question. If you 16:41 answer my question, I'll answer your question. Seems fair. 16:44 Verse 25: The baptism of John, Jesus said, Where was it from? 16:48 Was it from heaven or from men? And they reasoned among 16:53 themselves [Ooh well] If we say it's from heaven, He will say to 16:57 us then why did you not believe in him? But if we say it's from 17:01 men [mm, that won't work] for we fear what the multitude will say 17:05 for all count John as a prophet. 17:07 Like everybody thought he was really cool and they thought he 17:09 was a prophet. We can't... Ahh! A trick question with a trick 17:13 question. Right? 17:15 So they answered Jesus and said, [Well, well] We do not know. And 17:19 said to them, [Well] Neither will I tell you by what 17:22 authority I do these things. 17:24 That was the deal. A deal is a deal. You decide not to answer 17:27 my question, can't answer yours either. Right? He knew that 17:31 answering that question truthfully was not going 17:34 to bring people closer to God or to Him. It was just going to add 17:38 fuel to the fire of those religious leaders and He didn't 17:41 take the bait. He walked away. They were trying to get Him all 17:46 flustered and because of God's power that He had tanked up on 17:49 that last night of prayer He knew how to respond to them. 17:52 Jesus wasn't trying to embarrass these leaders and He wanted to 17:58 save them. But it was time for a parable. Time for a lesson 18:02 because people there needed to understand what was really 18:04 happening there. And it's called the Parable of the Two Sons. 18:07 Let's read it in verse 28 of Matthew 21:... 18:13 But what do you think?
