And 09:49 they prepared the Passover. 09:51 Wow! This is so exciting, the Passover meal. Now this was 09:58 celebrating the original Passover. Do you remember when 10:00 that was. The first Passover, let's review that together. 10:03 It happened many, many hundreds of years before and that was the 10:08 night that the Israelites were freed from slavery and that was 10:14 the night of the final plague, the death of the firstborn son. 10:17 But the Israelites knew that if they put the blood of the lamb 10:22 on the doorposts and the lintel of their house that the angel of 10:27 death would pass over that house Now, of course, the lamb and the 10:31 blood pointed forward to Jesus and little did the disciples 10:35 know that this Passover was the last one that would meaningfully 10:39 point forward to Jesus. Because that very next day, on Friday, 10:44 Jesus would be crucified as that sacrificial lamb, the Passover 10:50 lamb, the true lamb of God. And as the disciples and Jesus ate 10:55 this meal, they didn't have to eat it in a quick manner like 10:57 the Israelites did on their way out of Egypt. Right? They could 11:01 relax and rest and have a special time to talk with each 11:07 other and for Jesus to share with them. Now Jesus though they 11:12 noticed was different right now. He was very sad and troubled. 11:15 And the disciples were definitely not ready for what 11:19 was to come. They were still vying for Jesus's attention and 11:23 were jealous of each other and they wanted the best of the best 11:25 for themselves. Judas had pushed his way all the way to be on the 11:30 side of Jesus, right next to Him on the left. Interesting if you 11:34 remember last week when we talked about the left and the 11:37 right. And John the disciples, often called the disciples whom 11:40 Jesus loved, sat on the right like the sheep. Right? As they 11:46 sat down for the meal there should have been a servant there 11:49 to wash their feet. Now their feet got super gross because 11:53 they did not have the sanitary practices that we have today. 11:56 So often waste, animal waste and human waste and junk would just 12:03 be in the street and then they would walk through it with their 12:04 sandals and it would be really gross. One of the disciples 12:08 should have realized, Oh wow, there's no servant here. I'm a 12:12 disciples of Jesus. I should be the one to do this. Somebody 12:15 must wash their feet and yet they didn't. This was Jesus's 12:19 chance to teach them a huge lesson in humility. So Jesus 12:22 took a towel and He took His outer garment off, His robe, and 12:26 He took the towel and He wrapped it around his waist and He took 12:30 a basin of water and He knelt down and He started washing the 12:34 disciples' feet and drying them on the towel around His waist. 12:38 Oh my! You can imagine the disciples' surprise and then 12:44 horror to realize that their Lord and teacher was washing 12:48 their feet. Oh my! They should be the ones doing that. Right? 12:52 And Jesus did that for them. It says in John, and all of the 12:59 gospels talk about the events in the last week of Jesus's life. 13:02 But we're going to go to John now. Jump over to John 13 verses 13:08 3-5 where it talks about Jesus washing the disciples feet. 13:11 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His 13:15 hands and that He had come from God and was going back to God, 13:19 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and 13:22 girded Himself. After that He poured water into a basin and 13:25 began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the 13:28 towel which He had girded Himself about His waist. Then He 13:32 came to Simon Peter and Peter said to Him, [you know Peter 13:36 always had something to say didn't he, Haha, yes he did] 13:39 Lord, are you washing my feet? [Obvious question] And Jesus 13:44 said to him, What I am doing you do not understand now but you 13:48 will know after this. And Peter said to Him, You shall never 13:52 wash my feet! [No] Jesus answered him, If I do not wash 13:57 you, you will have no part with me. Simon Peter said to Him, Oh 14:03 Lord, not only my feet, also my hands, my head. [He was ready 14:08 for a full on shower, wasn't he] And Jesus said to him, he who 14:12 has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely 14:18 clean. And you are clean but not all of you. 14:23 Dun, dun, dun. Everyone looked around the room. Well who of us 14:26 is not clean? Jesus washed all of our feet. Hmm. Jesus even 14:33 washing Judas' feet didn't He. Judas had already, and He knew 14:38 Jesus had known this already. Judas had already gone to the 14:41 priests and rulers a couple of times and he had already agreed 14:44 to set Jesus up, to help them to get Jesus and yet he also 14:49 cleaned Judas's feet. And Judas, as his Lord and Savior knelt by 14:54 him and washed his feet he almost changed his heart. But 14:56 pride got in the way. Let's continue reading. Oh, we read 15:01 that about Peter already. Peter loved Jesus so much and he had a 15:04 good heart and he wanted to change but he didn't realize he 15:07 couldn't do it by himself. Foot washing service is such a 15:12 special service that represents kind of like a mini baptism and 15:16 forgiveness and humility and clean hearts and being a servant 15:22 to each other. It's such a special service and here in the 15:25 U.S. we celebrate the foot washing service one time a 15:29 quarter. Not quite sure where that tradition came from but 15:31 Passover is one time a year, we get to do it four times a year. 15:34 So it's such a special thing. And they continued there with 15:41 the foot washing service. This is something that Jesus asked us 15:44 to do. And He says: 15:47 If I then, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also 15:50 ought to wash one another's feet for I have given you an example 15:54 that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly I 15:57 say to you, A servant is not greater than his master nor is 16:00 he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these 16:04 things blessed are you if you do them. 16:06 He asks us to continue this ceremony. So on the night where 16:10 Passover was going to change completely the next day, right, 16:13 He gave is a new ceremony that we could continue to celebrate 16:16 to remember Him. Now the new ceremony consisted of the foot 16:21 washing but then it also had the communion service and the 16:24 communion service had elements of what they already celebrated 16:28 with Passover as well melded together and it was very special 16:31 Let's jump back to Matthew. Jesus took the cup after supper 16:37 and He started a new tradition for them. Well let's start with 16:44 bread actually. Okay. So He took... And remember at the 16:48 Passover time they had bread without yeast because yeast 16:49 represented sin. So it was flat bread. This is called matzah 16:52 which is the Passover bread. And this is what Jesus said in 16:56 Matthew 26 verse 26: 16:59 And after they were done eating Jesus took the bread and blessed 17:02 and broke it and gave it to His disciples and He said, Take, eat 17:07 this is my body broken for you. 17:10 This is really cool about the matzah bread. You see the holes, 17:14 just like the holes that were to be in Jesus's hands and the 17:18 stripes just like the stripes from the whip on His back. 17:20 There is a lot of symbolism in this bread. And then He took the 17:25 cup. Here I have a bottle here. He took the bottle and He poured 17:29 it into the cup and He took the cup after supper and He said: 17:32 He gave thanks and He said drink from it, all of you, for this is 17:38 my blood, the blood of the new covenant which was shed for many 17:41 for the remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of 17:44 the fruit of the vine from now until the day in which I drink 17:48 it with you, new with you, in my Father's kingdom. 17:52 What special symbolism. Now sometimes some people believe 17:57 that when Jesus said, This is my body, they believe in something 18:00 called transubstantiation. It's a really big word and what that 18:03 means is that when the pastor blesses this that it actually 18:08 becomes Jesus's body. Now just saying that out loud, we don't 18:13 believe that that's what the Bible is saying here. We believe 18:15 that this represents Jesus's body broken for us and when we 18:19 break it with our teeth that it's like our sins are breaking 18:23 Jesus on the cross. Right? So we don't believe that this is 18:26 actually Jesus's body. We believe it represents or it's a 18:29 symbol for Jesus's body. And some believe that this actually 18:34 becomes His blood which we don't believe in that. It's almost 18:38 like magic. Right? And we don't believe in that. But we believe 18:41 that this is representing or a symbol for His blood that He 18:44 shed for us. The other thing that we believe is that we 18:47 believe that this is grape juice and that it's not fermented, 18:51 because we know what Jesus has said through His servant Solomon 18:54 that wine is a mocker. Right? Wine and strong drink is 18:57 raging. It makes us make really bad choices so there's no reason 19:00 who Jesus would have partaken in that with His disciples. So this 19:03 is just pure grape juice. Squeeze the grapes and that's 19:06 the grape juice. That's such a special ceremony that Jesus has 19:10 set up for us to learn. Then actually during the supper 19:19 Jesus announced in a way that Judas was the one that would 19:22 betray Him by saying whoever dips in this with me and eats is 19:27 one. And Judas did. And the disciples were shocked. They 19:30 couldn't believe it. And Judas went out to do the thing that he 19:34 was going to do which was to betray Jesus, his Lord and 19:37 Savior. Judas hurried to betray Jesus and he already had the 30 19:41 pieces of silver that the priests had given him. Judas may 19:44 have thought that this would have happened anyway. Or he 19:48 thought well maybe if I force Jesus to save himself maybe 19:53 He'll become the king that I want Him to be. But we know that 19:55 that wasn't true. That night, that Passover night that they 19:59 celebrated Jesus showed us a new ceremony that we can celebrate. 20:03 Now myself, I actually have a really fun Bible study group 20:06 that I'm a part of and we've actually celebrated what Jesus 20:09 would have celebrated Passover as. And it's really fun to learn 20:12 about the history of that. Not that I think that we need to do 20:14 that to be saved. No I don't think that. But I think it's 20:17 really cool to understand the symbolism behind it and most 20:20 importantly it's important to understand what Jesus did for us 20:24 and what the symbols of communion, what we call Passover 20:30 now mean to us.
