05:07 so she's still a puppy. Now some of you have had puppies before
05:10 and some of you have puppies now and you know that puppies can be
05:15 wiggle worms because they have a lot of energy. You're busy all
05:18 all-day aren't you? Let's take a look at a typical day in the
05:25 life of Olivia the puppy. After waking up in the morning and
05:29 eating breakfast she runs down the stairs and heads outside.
05:33 She half rides, half rolls her volleyball down the hill. She
05:37 loves that ball. She plays with her favorite squeaky toy. Boy
05:42 does she love that toy? Can you hear it. (squeak, squeak) She
05:51 loves playing with her fur cousin. They tumble around in

05:57 Olivia likes to sniff around and explore the different nooks and

06:05 animals have visited the area. Dogs like to roll around in the

06:19 she runs back up the stairs to eat and continues playing, of

08:35 Dear heavenly Father, thank you so very much for giving us
08:39 love's greatest gift in Jesus. Please send your Holy Spirit to
08:42 be here with us today. We love you. Amen.
08:45 Do you remember where Jesus was when we left off our story last
08:49 week? He was in Herod's court. Pilot had sent Him there hoping
08:54 to patch things up and to make things right with Herod. And
09:00 Herod, you may have heard that name before, you'd be right.
09:04 He's the same Herod who killed John the Baptist and he still
09:08 felt guilty about that. In fact, he thought maybe that by saving
09:12 Jesus, he could make up for his bad choice of killing John the
09:15 Baptist and he also wanted to see Jesus do some miracles first
09:20 hand. So even though he looked at Jesus as being and knew just
09:26 like Pilot did that He was innocent, he still wanted to put
09:28 Him to the test. So he brought in some sick people and he said
09:32 if you heal them I'll set you free. Do you think Jesus did?
09:35 He didn't. I'm sure He wanted to heal them, but He would have
09:39 have been healing them for the wrong reason. It would have been
09:42 a selfish reason which technically would have been a
09:44 sin, right? So He didn't. Now the priests were scared at this
09:49 point because they thought that maybe He would do the miracle
09:52 but He didn't. And that's when we're going to pick up the story
09:56 in the book of Luke. Luke 23 verse 9 says: And he questioned
10:01 Him with many words but He answered him nothing. And then
10:05 Herod and his men of war treated Him with contempt and mocked Him
10:09 which means that they mistreated Him, and arrayed Him in a
10:11 gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilot. Herod really didn't do
10:16 much of anything did he? But verse 12 says, That very day
10:20 Pilot and Herod became friends with each other, for previously
10:22 they had had enmity with each other. So that part of it worked
10:25 out, right? So He's back now with Pilot. You see, at Passover
10:31 there was a special tradition and that was that one prisoner
10:34 would be set free. That's right. Someone who was very guilty
10:38 would be set free. And Pilot had an idea. He thought I'm going
10:43 to choose a really bad prisoner. Hmm, who should I pick?
10:46 Barabbas. He was horrible. He was a wicked prisoner. He looked
10:49 evil and he was evil. He was condemned to be crucified. He
10:53 had already been tried. And he thought, I'll set Jesus and
10:56 Barabbas side by side and surely they'll set Jesus free. But did
11:01 they? Luke tells us more from the story in verse 18: And they
11:05 all cried out at once, Away with this man and release to us
11:10 Barabbas, who had been thrown into prison for a certain
11:13 rebellion made in the city and for murder. Pilot, therefore,
11:16 wishing to release Jesus again called out to them, but they
11:19 shouted saying Crucify Him, Crucify Him. Then he said to
11:24 them a third time, Why? What evil has He done? I find no
11:28 reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let
11:31 Him go. But they were insistent demanding with loud voices that
11:35 He be crucified. And the voices of these men and the chief
11:38 prevailed. It was at this time as well that Pilot got a note
11:44 from his wife and his wife said Don't do anything to Jesus.
11:48 I had a dream about Him, please don't. But did he listen to his
11:53 wife? Did he listen to his very own conscience? Let's see what
11:58 happened. So Pilot gave sentence that it should be as they
12:04 requested and he released to them the one that they requested
12:08 who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison but he
12:12 delivered Jesus to their will. He let Barabbas go free and Jesus
12:17 he gave over to the ruckus crowd Now during this time that He had
12:23 been in the Roman control the soldiers had been very unkind to
12:28 Him and they had whipped Him and hurt Him very badly and He
12:32 hadn't had anything to eat either since Passover supper
12:35 Thursday night so He was very hungry, He was bleeding. They
12:40 had put now a crown of thorns on His head and He was very weak.
12:48 And they then brought Jesus out and Pilot gave Him over to them.
12:56 He washed his hands in a basin of water, it says in Matthew to
13:00 try to like wash off what he had done or just symbolize that he
13:04 wasn't responsible. But we know that he was responsible just
13:08 like the priests and the people, all the people shouting, Crucify
13:10 Him were responsible. Jesus had the guilt of all the sins of the
13:17 world along with all the physical suffering that He had
13:19 had due to the Roman soldiers and probably some of the Jewish
13:22 people when they were trying to pull Jesus away from them as
13:26 well, hurt Him as well. And Barabbas's cross, the cross that
13:29 was meant to kill a criminal was laid on Jesus's bleeding
13:34 shoulders. The whips that they used would have little pieces of
13:37 rock or metal in them and so those would dig into their back
13:41 and it was just horrific. And then they put that wood, which
13:45 I'm sure was not sanded, um what do you call, sanded? Right?
13:48 When we do projects we sand it so it's nice and smooth.
13:51 I'm sure the wood from the cross was not sanded and so then they
13:54 placed that on Jesus's shoulders Jesus was just simply too weak
13:57 at that point and He staggered under the weight of the cross
14:00 and fell. It wasn't just the weight of the cross He felt
14:03 though. We talked about that before. It was also the weight
14:05 of all the sins of the world. They put the cross on his
14:08 shoulders yet again and He fell again. He was carrying something
14:13 even heavier, like I said, than the cross. In Mark 15:21 it'll
14:18 tell us what happened next. All the gospels talk about this very
14:23 important story in the life of Jesus, Right? Mark 15 verse 21
14:28 says: Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian,
14:33 the father of Alexander and Rufus as he was coming out of
14:37 the country passing by, to bear Jesus's cross. And they brought
14:41 him to the place Golgotha which is translated The place of a skull
14:46 Now Simon didn't know Jesus but we know that actually his sons
14:51 were followers of Jesus and later he became a disciple as
14:55 well. Jesus's special disciples, where were they at this point
14:59 Well thankfully they were not hurt by the Jewish council or by
15:03 the Roman soldiers. They were following along behind in the
15:07 crowd and Mary Jesus' mother was with John. She was full of
15:11 sadness and pain and doubt at this point as to whether her son
15:16 was, in fact, the Messiah. And they had hoped that He would use
15:23 His special power, that Jesus would use His special power and
15:27 yet as they nailed Jesus to the cross, Mary fainted. She fainted
15:31 She fell and they took her away. She couldn't imagine that this
15:35 was actually happening to her little boy. Pilot was angry at
15:38 himself at this point and so he decided to do something else
15:42 besides just wash his hands. He thought, I'm going to nail a
15:45 sign to the top of the cross to say exactly who this is and he
15:50 was correct in what he said. Let's see what it says here in
15:53 John 19:19. So that's easy to remember 19:19. It says: Now
16:02 Pilot wrote a title and put it on the cross and the writing was
16:06 this: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Then many of
16:12 the Jews read this title for the place where Jesus was crucified
16:15 was near the city and if he wrote it in three languages, in
16:18 Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, so everybody could read what it
16:21 said. Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to
16:24 Pilot, Do not write The King of the Jews but He said I am the
16:28 King of the Jews. And Pilot answered, What I have written, I
16:31 have written. He was up to here with those priests and leaders
16:34 wasn't he? Then the soldiers when they had crucified Jesus
16:38 took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part,
16:41 and also the tunic and the tunic was without seam woven
16:44 from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves
16:47 Let us not tear it but cast lots for it whose it shall be that
16:52 the scripture might be fulfilled which says they divided my
16:54 garments among them and for my clothing they cast lots. What
16:59 happened then at this point? Jesus hung in between two
17:03 thieves as we know, we see many scenes of the crucifixion and
17:06 there are three crosses, right? One thief mocked him and made
17:11 fun of him just like everyone else was doing around them.
17:13 But the other thief was thinking maybe He is the Son of God.
17:18 Maybe He can help me. He was watching and remembering what He
17:22 had heard Jesus say. He heard Jesus say, Father, forgive them
17:26 for they know not what they do. And he asked Jesus to save him.
17:31 Jesus was always thinking of others, even on the cross, and
17:33 Jesus spoke to the thief that day and said: Surely today you
17:39 you will be with me in Paradise. It's very important where the
17:42 comma is in that sentence. You can talk to your parents about
17:43 that one. But He was saying, I'm telling you right now today as
17:47 we hang on this cross when I come again you're going to be
17:51 with me because you've asked for forgiveness. Isn't that amazing?
17:54 Jesus was also thinking of His mother and he saw His mother
17:57 therewith John and He asked John to take care of His mother.
17:59 Jesus felt how God hates sin because He felt that separation
18:03 and He couldn't see beyond the cross at this point. When He was
18:07 here on earth, He told people you know I will rise again in three
18:10 days, Right? But now as He hung on the cross, He couldn't see
18:13 that. At noon as Jesus hung on the cross it became dark and it
18:18 stayed pitch dark for three hours. This was Satan's last
18:23 attempt. Jesus couldn't see beyond the cross and he thought
18:26 maybe at this point, He would give up. Matthew 27 verse 45
18:34 says...Matthew 27 verse 45. Let's jump over there. 27:45
18:42 Here we go. Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there
18:45 was darkness and at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud
18:48 voice saying...And He said in the language of their day but
18:52 I'm going to use it in English so we can understand, My God, My
18:55 God, why have you forsaken me? Some of those who stood there
19:02 thought that they heard something and they said, Is He
19:05 calling for Elijah. But He hadn't. He cried out and with a
19:09 loud voice He yielded up His spirit and He died. And Jesus
19:16 though, He kept trusting God and He didn't give up even when He
19:20 felt that complete separation from His heavenly Father. Even
19:23 though He felt like God had left Him He knew that that couldn't
19:28 be true. The angels were there. They were watching and they
19:31 longed to help their Savior, their friend, their Lord. But
19:36 they couldn't, they weren't allowed to. The darkness left
19:38 and that's when Jesus cried It Is Finished! and He died. Oh

19:50 Greater love has no one that this than to lay down one's life
19:55 for his friends. John 15 verse 13. That's what Jesus did for us

20:11 He felt that separation from God You might say, the second death,
20:15 Miss Michelle, what does that mean? Well, I'm glad you asked.
20:18 The second death. So the first death like Adam and Eve they
20:22 said the wages of sin is death. And so Adam and Eve, they did

20:29 Well there's technically two deaths, right? My grandma died
20:32 but I know I'm going to see her again and she'll rise again.
20:35 And yet people who make evil, wicked decisions in life and
