In your name we pray, Amen. 07:53 The title of today's story is From Death to Life. Isn't it 08:00 amazing that Jesus never stopped trusting and that He never 08:04 sinned, not even once. Jesus proved, our lesson study says, 08:09 that with God's help humans can trust and obey no matter what 08:14 happens or how we feel. That's hard isn't it? I'm so thankful 08:19 that Jesus gave us our amazing example; aren't you? Now last 08:25 week we heard the story of Jesus's death, His crucifixion 08:28 right? But the good news came Sunday morning. Matthew 27 verse 08:35 50 and 51. Are you ready for this? Here it comes. Now this is 08:39 Friday and Jesus cried out with a loud voice and yielded up His 08:42 spirit. He gave His life for us. And then in 51: Then behold the 08:48 veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom and the 08:51 earth quaked and the rocks were split and the graves were opened 08:55 and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were 08:59 raised. Now the good news is coming, isn't it? But before we 09:03 get there...Sorry we have to wait a tiny bit longer. I want 09:06 to talk about that. What happened when Jesus died? 09:09 The earth quaked. That's right. It was a huge earthquake and 09:13 graves opened. We're going to find out more about that later. 09:17 Graves of the saints who had died. Now it also talks about 09:21 how the curtain of the temple tore when Jesus died. Now 09:26 because Jesus had come and He was the Lamb of God we no longer 09:30 needed sacrificial lambs did we And at that point when the 09:34 curtain the lamb escaped that was almost to be sacrificed on 09:38 the altar there in the Jerusalem temple. The true Lamb had come 09:42 and our sins had killed Him. Wow! There was only one High 09:47 Priest now that was needed and that was Jesus. Jesus was our 09:52 High Priest and only the high priest was allowed to look or go 09:55 into the Most Holy Place, right? And even then only at certain 09:59 times, right? Jesus was our real High Priest and when the temple 10:04 curtain tore in between the Holy and the Most Holy Place everyone 10:08 could see then into the Most Holy Place. And that was showing 10:11 that everyone can now go before God. We don't need someone else 10:14 to pray for us. We can pray directly to God. Now let's 10:18 pretend that this is the curtain right? Let's say that it had 10:22 torn from bottom to top. Well someone could have argued well 10:27 somebody just got their knife or their...I don't know what they 10:32 would have used back then, right Their gardening utensil and they 10:35 just did a little rip in it and they tore it all the way up. 10:38 That's humanly possible, right? But these curtains were so tall 10:41 that unless you had a ladder or something very tall to stand on 10:44 there was no way that a human could have torn the curtain from 10:47 top to bottom. That was Divine intervention. That was an angel 10:52 that did that, right? And it was very symbolic and it's pretty 10:56 cool to see what that meant. Now the earth quaked and the 11:00 righteous people's graves opened up and Mary and the disciples 11:04 and the friends wished at that point that they could die too 11:08 along with their Savior. They were so sad. During those three 11:14 dark hours He said it was finished and it was really 11:17 interesting because there was a soldier by the cross who 11:18 actually really gave a testimony in that he said: So when the 11:23 centurion who stood opposite Jesus saw that He cried like 11:27 this and breathed His last, he said, truly this man was the Son 11:32 of God. This was a heathen Roman saying the truth out loud. The 11:37 truth that Pilot, the truth that Herod, the truth that even the 11:40 disciples hadn't been able to say was said by a Roman 11:44 centurion. That was found in Mark 15 verse 39. Now you 11:51 remember that the Jewish leaders didn't want to go into the court 11:55 of Romans because they'd be defiled. Well they also didn't 12:00 want anybody to be hanging on the cross during the Sabbath 12:04 because that was also wrong according to their rules. Not to 12:07 kill someone but to leave the body on the cross on the Sabbath 12:10 And so they wanted to take the bodies down at that point and 12:14 Jesus has already died and so what happens when people die. 12:17 Well we have to make funeral arrangements or at least burial 12:21 arrangements, right? And back then they would bury people in a 12:25 tomb and this is kind of what it may have looked like, right? 12:29 So it was like a cave kind of. They may have hewn it out of the 12:34 rock or it might have been a natural cave. And then to close 12:38 it they would just put a stone in front of the entrance, right? 12:40 And so let's jump right back into our story in the Bible in 12:44 John 19 verse 31. John 19 verse 31 says: Therefore because it 12:50 was the preparation day, that's Friday. We call it the 12:52 preparation day at our house too That the bodies should not 12:56 remain on the cross on the Sabbath for the Sabbath was a 12:58 high day and the Jews asked Pilot that their legs be broken 13:01 and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and 13:04 broke the legs of the first and the other who was crucified with 13:07 Him. The two thieves on either side, right? But when they came 13:10 to Jesus and saw He was already dead they did not break His legs 13:13 but one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear and 13:16 immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has 13:20 seen has testified and his testimony is true and he knows 13:23 that what he is telling is the truth for these things were done 13:26 that the scripture should be fulfilled. This was actually a 13:28 prophecy in the Old Testament that not one of His bones should 13:32 be broken. And so they were ready to take them down. Now 13:37 they broke the legs of the other two so that they would die more 13:40 quickly because they had not died yet. Crucifixion was a slow 13:43 and very painful death. The disciples wanted Jesus to have a 13:47 proper respectful burial but they were too poor and they 13:52 would also need permission to get His body from the Romans 13:55 right? That's when two rich men stepped in to help. Two rich men 13:59 that they didn't even realize wanted to help them. And let's 14:02 continue reading in John 19 verses 38-40: After this Joseph 14:10 Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of 14:14 the Jews asked Pilot that he might take away the body of 14:17 Jesus and Pilot gave his permission. So he came and took 14:21 the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus who at first had come to Jesus 14:25 by night also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, 14:29 about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus and 14:32 bound it in strips of linen with spices as was the custom of the 14:36 Jews to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was 14:39 a garden and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet 14:43 laid. So there they laid Jesus because of the Jews preparation 14:47 day for the tomb was nearby. So they did all those things for 14:51 Jesus, the things that the disciples couldn't afford to do. 14:53 Those two disciples, secret disciples had done that. And 14:57 they actually felt bad for not telling everyone they were 15:01 disciples sooner. They had done things in secret to try to help 15:04 save Jesus in the past but now they were really sharing that 15:08 they were disciples of Jesus, weren't they? And that was in 15:12 Joseph's own tomb, the tomb he was supposed to lay in when he 15:15 died one day. Jesus rested on the Sabbath there in the tomb, 15:19 sleeping, the sleep of death, right? And just like at creation 15:24 when He rested on the Sabbath He was again giving us an 15:26 example of what we should do. But then, let's flip over to 15:31 Luke 23 and find out what happens next in our story. All 15:35 the gospels talk about this very exciting story, don't they? 15:38 And they all share a little bit different perspective and 15:41 different things about it which is really cool. If you've seen 15:45 an event and your friend has seen the same thing you're going 15:47 remember different things about it, right? And so that's the 15:51 same thing with the disciples. Luke 23:54-56 says: Woop let's 15:58 go to the correct verse here. Because that's 22. We were back 16:03 another chapter, have mercy. Luke 23, let's try this again. 16:08 Luke 23:54, here we go okay verse 55: And the women who had 16:14 come with Him from Galilee followed after and they observed 16:16 the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and 16:20 prepared spices and fragrant oils and they rested on the 16:23 Sabbath according to the commandment. So there the women 16:25 saw where He had been laid, right? All right. Let's keep 16:31 reading this very exciting story Pilot, what's everybody thinking 16:34 at this point, right? Pilot really didn't think much of his 16:37 actions. He had done many hateful, wicked things like this 16:39 in the past. The priests and rulers were actually not as 16:42 happy as they thought they were going to be. They were actually 16:45 really afraid because they remembered something. The tomb 16:48 was sealed, there was 100 Roman soldiers guarding it. Yet they 16:51 remembered that Jesus had said when He was on earth that He was 16:54 going to rise again in three days. Many people were 16:59 disappointed at Jesus' death and very sad. And the disciples had 17:05 forgotten that promise though, the one that the Jewish leaders 17:07 remembered about Him rising from the dead in three days. 17:10 The disciples had forgotten that They had forgotten what was 17:14 called the sign of Jonah. You remember how many days that 17:17 Jonah was in the belly of the whale. That's right, three days 17:21 and three nights. And in Jewish times the beginning or the 17:26 ending of a day marked one day so Friday was the first day. 17:29 Sabbath was the second day, but then Sabbath at sunset began the 17:35 third day. That's when Sunday started was at sunset according 17:39 to Jewish tradition Just like we celebrate that Sabbath starts at 17:43 sunset on Friday night, right? And the Roman soldiers were at 17:48 the grave. It was the middle of the night right? Well sunset 17:54 would have been the middle of the night or towards the 17:55 beginning of the night and then as the night wore on the Roman 17:58 soldiers were there but there was also two invisible armies 18:01 there. Satan remembered what Jesus had said as well and 18:05 Satan's angels were there. But so were God's angels. Let's flip 18:09 over to Matthew 28. Ooo we're getting to the good part folks. 18:12 This is so exciting. Matthew 28:2-4 says: And behold there 18:18 was another great earthquake and the angel of the Lord descended 18:21 from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and 18:25 sat on it. I love that part, a little detail, the angel sat on 18:28 the stone. His countenance was like lightning and his clothing 18:31 was as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear and they 18:34 became like dead men. Dead men, they just keeled over. They just 18:38 fell down because they couldn't look at the brightness. And the 18:42 guards shook for fear but the angel answered and said to the 18:46 women, Do not be afraid for I know that you seek Jesus who was 18:51 crucified. Right? What happened at this point? The stone was 18:54 rolled away and Jesus was alive. A mighty angel rolled away the 18:59 stone, scared soldiers fell down the Son of God, Jesus' angels 19:04 called, God's angels called, Son of God, come forth, Thy Father 19:07 calls thee. Another angel unwrapped Jesus's body from all 19:11 those grave clothes, just like Lazarus had had on too right? 19:15 And Jesus carefully folded them there and Jesus walked out of 19:20 the tomb. Victorious. Praise God The angels rejoiced and sang and 19:25 bowed down and the soldiers saw and heard this whole thing 19:30 unfold in front of their eyes. Jesus shouted forth, I am the 19:34 resurrection and the life. The soldiers started back 19:38 to Jerusalem 19:39 to tell Pilot and they told everyone along the way what they 19:41 had seen. But some heard and they told the priests about it 19:46 and they said, No, no, no, no, bring the soldiers here first 19:47 and they tried to bribe them to lie. And the soldiers decided to 19:51 do it. They decided to lie and say that the disciples had come 19:55 and stolen the body away. And the priests said that they would 19:57 protect them from Pilot but Pilot had found out the truth. 20:01 Pilot knew what had happened at the grave because someone else 20:04 had told him.
