And today we're going to talk about some more exciting 09:13 news that we should be excited about telling everyone about as 09:17 well. Jesus had made two promises to His disciples that 09:21 they had forgotten. Are you ready to hear what they are? 09:24 The first one is in Matthew 27 verse 63 and it says: Sir we 09:30 remember while He was still alive that the deceiver said 09:33 after three days I will rise. Now this was during the Pilot 09:37 trial and these were people who weren't even believers in Jesus 09:40 yet they had remembered that Jesus said He would rise again 09:44 after three days. And the disciples had forgotten that 09:46 fact. What was promise number two? It's found in Matthew 26 09:51 verse 32; 26 verse 32, let me flip back a page here, says: 09:57 He was talking with his disciples at this time before 10:04 His death and He said: But after I have been raised I will go 10:07 before you to Galilee. So they even knew about that beach meet 10:12 up with Jesus before He died and yet they had forgotten those two 10:15 important promises. Jesus appeared to the disciples 10:19 without Thomas. Remember that? And then He appeared to lots of 10:22 people in Jerusalem, or they told lots of people in Jerusalem 10:26 He didn't appear to them right then but they told everybody 10:28 that they could tell in Jerusalem and there were still a 10:30 lot of people there because of Passover, right? And they told 10:34 as many people as possible that he's going to meet us in Galilee 10:39 Now you can imagine that all the people wanted to meet the guy 10:43 who had died and yet was alive, right? Even if they didn't 10:46 believe in Jesus they were very curious. So many people, in fact 10:50 it says in the Bible at least 500 people came to Galilee for 10:55 that meeting to see and hear Jesus for themselves. The 11:00 disciples were witnessing there to the people and actually 11:04 especially Thomas who had since then seen Jesus was witnessing 11:08 to the people and he said, At first I didn't believe and now I 11:11 believe and He's alive and isn't it exciting. And they were 11:15 were telling everything about Jesus to everybody who was there 11:17 and anyone who would listen when Jesus appeared to them. And 11:21 that's in Matthew 28 verse 18. So let's skip over there. Now 11:26 Matthew 28 verse 18 says: And Jesus came and spoke to them 11:32 saying, All authority has been given to me in heaven and on 11:37 earth. What does authority mean? Someone who has a position of 11:41 authority that means they have a position of power or they have a 11:43 position over other people. And I can't think of anyone that I'd 11:48 rather have authority over me than Jesus, right? Jesus was 11:52 both God and man. And we've talked about that in the past. 11:56 It's a mind-boggling topic that even an adult can't even 12:00 fathom. In heaven, we're going to have to have Jesus sit up down 12:03 for a really good lesson over how on earth that's possible 12:06 right? And He was the only human to obey the 10 commandments. 12:12 And the cool part is He'll help us to do that. Now let's go over 12:16 to Luke because our lesson study says something important is in 12:19 Luke 24. Let's check it out. Luke 24 verses 46-49 says the 12:29 following: Then He said to them Thus it is written and thus it 12:32 was necessary for Christ to suffer and rise from the dead 12:36 the third day. And that repentance and remission of sin 12:40 should be preached in His name to all nations beginning at 12:45 Jerusalem and you are my witnesses of these things. 12:49 Behold I send the promise of my Father upon you but tarry in the 12:54 city of Jerusalem until you are endued, you are given, the power 12:59 from on high. Jesus said you're my witnesses, you're my 13:03 missionaries and I'm going to give you power. Hang out in 13:06 Jerusalem and I'm going to send power to you. Whoa! I can't 13:12 think of anyone I'd rather get power from than Jesus, right? 13:16 He was a perfect human and He died for us. Wow! Died in our 13:25 place. He died in our place. He longs to live in our hearts and 13:29 He can't wait for us to live with Him forever. I can't wait 13:33 either, right? Now the gospel, you may have heard that word a 13:40 lot and maybe you know what it means and maybe you don't. So 13:43 I'm glad that we're going to talk about it. The gospel it 13:46 talks about in Matthew 24 verse 14. We read this verse last week 13:50 too. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all 13:54 the world as a witness to all the nations and then the end 13:58 will come. Now we know that the end is just the beginning for 14:01 Jesus's followers. But gospel. I'm going to ask you take out 14:06 the word gospel in that verse and we're going to put two 14:08 different words in that describe the meaning. It might 14:10 help you understand it better. And this good news of the 14:15 kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all 14:18 the nations and then the end will come. Does that make more 14:23 sense? That's right. Miss Michelle's good news pales in 14:26 comparison to the good news of the gospel of what Jesus did for 14:32 us. Of course, we're excited about having a new baby in our 14:34 family, but I'm so excited about the promise and what Jesus has 14:40 done for us. That's like even better news and we should be 14:43 even more excited about telling that to other people, right? 14:45 Yep. And that's what Jesus asked us to do, preach it to all the 14:50 world. Forty days after the resurrection Jesus and His 11 14:56 disciples were back in Jerusalem and they came to the Garden of 15:01 Gethsemane. We're going to pick up this story in the book of 15:04 Acts. That's right. We're moving out of the gospels and into the 15:07 book of Acts. Dun, dun, dun. We spent a lot of time in the 15:12 gospels because they're really important, right? Do you 15:14 remember what the gospels are? They're the first four books of 15:18 the New Testament, Matthew, Mark Luke and John. And the gospels 15:22 tell the story of the gospel, the good news of Jesus, right? 15:25 Acts, the title in my Bible says Acts of the Apostles. Apostles 15:30 are like followers of Jesus, right? And Acts of the Apostles 15:34 tells the history of the early church. All right. We're going 15:38 start in chapter 1. And it says: Chapter 1 I think is where they 15:42 want us to start. Let me double check. Yes, 1:1-3: The former 15:48 account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do 15:52 and teach until the day in which He was taken up after He through 16:02 the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles 16:04 whom He had chosen to whom He also presented Himself alive 16:09 after His suffering by many infallible proofs being seen by 16:13 them during 40 days and speaking of these things pertaining to 16:16 the kingdom of God. So many infallible proofs. There was no 16:19 way that people could believe that Jesus wasn't alive. He 16:23 showed up so many times and they knew in their hearts that Jesus 16:27 was alive. They had seen Him with their very eyes that He was 16:30 alive. No one could question that fact. And that's where 16:37 we're going to continue our story for today. See what 16:41 happens next. Now Jesus came to the Garden of Gethsemane and 16:45 ascended, or went up, the Mount of Olives. It was near Bethany 16:49 and we all know that Bethany was a dear place to our Savior's 16:52 heart. That's where Lazarus, Martha and Mary lived, His very 16:54 dear disciples, right? And in verse 8 it says, Jesus says, 16:59 because it's in red letters: But you shall receive power when the 17:02 Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me 17:06 in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria and to the end of 17:11 the earth. That's right. Now when He had spoken these things 17:16 while they were watching, what happens? I don't know if I'm 17:20 supposed to tell you that part yet. Let me see. I'm going to 17:22 skip ahead. I am! So I'll keep reading. He was taken up and a 17:28 cloud received Him out of their sight. So He was raising His 17:32 hands and teaching them, telling them these things and then He 17:36 started slowly going up, up, up, up, up, up into the sky. You can 17:39 imagine they just watched and watched and watched until He 17:43 disappeared into a bright cloud of angels. Now Jesus had 17:49 promised that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes 17:55 upon you and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem. And they 18:00 believed that. Jesus said in Matthew, it actually talks about 18:04 this as well in Matthew 28 it says: Um And Jesus said to them 18:09 Do not be afraid and go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee 18:12 where they will see me. And then at the end, it says: All 18:16 authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go 18:18 therefore and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in 18:21 the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching 18:25 them to observe all things that I have commanded you and lo I am 18:28 with you always even to the end of the age. Amen. What a 18:33 beautiful promise He left them with, didn't He? Then out of 18:37 nowhere they heard two very nice voices. They were talking to 18:42 them. They had been just watching up into the sky and 18:44 when they heard the voices they turned and looked and while they 18:48 had steadfastly looked toward heaven as He went up behold two 18:52 men stood beside them in white apparel; they had white clothes 18:56 on. And they also said to them, Men of Galilee, why do you stand 19:00 gazing into heaven. This same Jesus who is taken from you into 19:04 heaven will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into 19:11 heaven. The same Jesus. The same one you ate with, you talked 19:14 with, prayed with, you traveled with, you listened to and you 19:21 loved and believed. He's going to come back. What a great 19:24 promise that was for the disciples wasn't it? Jesus 19:28 promised. They may have remembered this promise, I hope 19:31 they did at this point. In John 14 verses 1-3, do you remember? 19:35 maybe this has been a memory text for you in the past. It's a 19:37 beautiful promise. Let not your hearts be troubled. I go to 19:49 prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you 19:53 I will come again and receive you to myself that where I am 19:59 there you may be also. How exciting!
