00:01 I want to spend my life
00:07 Mending broken people 00:12 I want to spend my life 00:19 Removing pain 00:24 Lord, let my words 00:30 Heal a heart that hurts 00:34 I want to spend my life 00:40 Mending broken people 00:46 I want to spend my life 00:51 Mending broken people 01:08 Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn. 01:10 I'm JD Quinn. 01:11 And we welcome you to 3ABN Family Worship. 01:14 Amen. 01:16 It's Sabbath, 01:17 and we have family members around the table, 01:20 and we're so glad the rest of our family, 01:22 you are joining us. 01:24 We have Don and Janelle. 01:26 Don and I work together daily and it's certainly a pleasure, 01:29 Janelle is so talented, bless her heart. 01:32 She's a busy, busy girl in graphics. 01:34 Is that graphics design? 01:37 In the publishing department. 01:38 Publishing department, okay. 01:39 Graphic design is what I do, 01:41 but it's in the publishing department. 01:42 Yeah, you're right. 01:43 And then we have my good friend, 01:45 Eric, Eric Durant. 01:46 Eric is one of these smart guys... 01:48 I try to be. He's an engineer. 01:49 I try to be. And a pilot. 01:51 And you name it... 01:52 Yes, yes, yes. 01:54 Very happy to be here. 01:55 It's always a blessing to be with you guys. 01:57 Amen. You know what? 01:58 It's just a blessing on Sabbath to sit back. 02:02 I don't know about y'all, 02:04 but we've had a crazy week, busy week. 02:07 Busy, busy week. 02:08 And so, on Sabbath we sit back 02:10 and it's just like as the Sabbath rules in, 02:14 we can just exhale and relax. 02:16 Amen. Amen. 02:17 Honey, you wanna start us with prayer? 02:19 Let's do have prayer. 02:21 Father as we come together on this Sabbath. 02:22 We thank you, Lord. 02:24 Thank You for being in our hearts and our minds. 02:26 Father, we dedicate this time to you. 02:28 And we just ask, Lord, 02:29 that through the aid of the Holy Spirit, 02:31 that what comes out of our mouth 02:33 will fill hearts. 02:34 We love You. 02:35 We thank You, Lord, give You all praise and glory. 02:38 You are so worthy. 02:39 Amen. 02:41 Amen. 02:42 Tonight, we are going to focus on a single scripture 02:47 that we're going to unpack with other scripture. 02:50 And if you have your Bibles, 02:52 you might want to turn to 2 Timothy 1:7 02:57 and excuse my squeaky voice. 02:59 But I have to tell you the honest truth 03:03 why we're doing this. 03:05 I was having a day, the other day, 03:08 I was in a lot of pain, 03:10 feeling almost sorry for myself and unmotivated almost. 03:16 Have you ever gotten to the point 03:17 where you almost feel spiritually paralyzed? 03:20 It's like, I knew I should pick up the Bible 03:23 and read and pray. 03:24 And I knew that would make things better 03:26 and I couldn't quite get to it. 03:28 JD looked over at me and he said, 03:30 "Honey, what's going on?" 03:32 And I said, "I'm having a rough day." 03:34 He said, "Well, you're smiling." 03:35 And I said, 03:36 "I'm smiling on the outside, but I'm screaming on the in." 03:39 And I told him, 03:41 "I know I ought to be in the Word of God 03:44 for my own benefit and to talk with the Lord." 03:46 He said, "Well, honey, let's read together." 03:48 We did. And that helped so much. 03:51 So when it came time to do this program, 03:54 we just found out about it. 03:56 I needed to hear this message. 03:59 2 Timothy 1:7, and it says... 04:02 Janelle, why don't you read that for us? 04:04 Sure. 04:05 2 Timothy 1:7, 04:07 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, 04:10 but of power and of love and of a sound mind." 04:14 A spirit of power, love, and sound mind. 04:17 Amen. 04:19 You know, when you think about it, fear, 04:23 that means to be timid or cowardly. 04:26 And I guarantee you, 04:28 fear is being mass marketed, is it not? 04:31 It is the driving force in today's society. 04:34 You turn on the evening news 04:36 and sometimes by the time you finish watching the news, 04:39 you're like, 04:41 don't you ever have to just take a deep breath? 04:43 That's right. 04:44 Fear causes confusion. 04:46 It causes irrational thinking. 04:49 Fear causes stress, which is harmful on our body, 04:53 misunderstanding and speculations 04:56 and Christians don't need to face that kind of fear. 05:00 Amen. 05:02 Because God exchanges His power for our weakness, doesn't He? 05:06 Eric, why don't you read Ephesians 6:10? 05:11 Ephesians 6:10, 05:13 "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might." 05:17 I'll tell you, 05:18 fear also brings about paranoia. 05:21 I've seen a lot of paranoia. 05:23 Amen. Yeah. 05:24 So this verse, be strong in the Lord 05:26 and in the power of His might, 05:29 that will fight paranoia. 05:30 It will fight all of those things 05:32 that the devil wants to bring upon us, 05:35 to distract us from who we should be, 05:38 who we should worship. 05:39 I believe another thing that fear causes is 05:41 the need to control things. 05:44 You know, like it drives us 05:45 to want to control our environments 05:47 and even the people around us and all that, 05:50 you know, do you see that so much in our world 05:53 where people want to control things 05:54 because they fear 05:56 because they feel like 05:57 they have to be the one in control 05:59 because maybe they, 06:00 it gives them some sense of security. 06:01 I think that you said, 06:03 so I'll try to kind of touched on 06:04 in the media they're using 06:06 this is what fear does, 06:07 it plays on our emotions and our feelings. 06:09 So, you know, if people have 06:10 had some type of traumatic event in their life, 06:12 it kind of just triggers that, right again, boom, 06:14 you're kind of going down that spiral again, 06:16 it brings a trigger. 06:17 Yeah. 06:19 And so, so there are some fearful things going on. 06:21 The battle is real, isn't it? 06:23 Most certainly it's real. 06:24 And I'm learning that more all the time that that he is... 06:28 That the enemy is looking for weakness 06:31 and it just so happens 06:32 because of his professionalism 06:36 and because of his time on this earth, 06:37 he knows, and he's got a running 06:40 resume on each one of us. 06:41 That's right. Right. 06:43 And so it's, it's the good news is though, 06:48 the good news is that 06:52 when you think of power, 06:55 what do you normally think of? 06:57 Something that just like that. 07:00 I think of dynamite... 07:01 Or lightning bolt. Amen. 07:03 Think of Dynamite. That's right. 07:05 And whenever you're talking about power here, 07:08 what's that word in the Greek? 07:09 Dunamis. 07:10 Dunamis, first time I heard 07:12 Shelley give a sermon on dunamis. 07:15 I thought what in the world is this going? 07:17 But I'll never forget dunamis because it's close to dynamite. 07:21 Right. 07:22 So, you know, I can connect those two together. 07:24 And, but that's, 07:26 that's who the enemy is going against. 07:30 He who has dynamite power. 07:32 He who created all... Yes. 07:34 You know, so anyway... I remember... 07:36 The enemy is indeed real. 07:38 I remember when I was reading about David 07:40 and how all of Israel 07:41 was afraid of Goliath, the Philistine, 07:45 but David wasn't afraid. 07:47 He trusted in the Lord... Amen. 07:49 And he stood up in front of Goliath and said, 07:51 you might be a big guy, 07:52 but you're not bigger than my God. 07:53 Amen. Amen. 07:55 So fear is, I've always looked at it when I get afraid, 07:59 it's a lack of faith. 08:01 We should trust in the Lord 08:02 that He's gonna carry us through. 08:04 And that always worked for me to eliminate that fear. 08:06 I have an acronym for fear, false evidence appearing real. 08:13 That's right. Yeah. 08:14 And that's kind of what goes on, 08:16 but you know, we all get to that point sometimes 08:19 where we don't feel like 08:20 we're filled with power and motivated 08:24 because we've just experienced the death of JD's brother, 08:27 somebody we were very close to. 08:30 I spent most Sabbath. 08:32 I was counseling with our loved ones 08:35 who are grieving. 08:37 I'm grieving too. 08:38 But there's times that 08:40 just our circumstances suppress or even oppress us. 08:46 But what is this dynamite power that we're talking about? 08:53 JD, you wanna read Ephesians 3:16-21. 08:58 Amen. Amen. 09:00 That He, that's God, that's Jesus. 09:04 "That he would grant you 09:05 according to the riches of His glory 09:08 to be strengthened with might, with that dunamis might, 09:11 through His Spirit, 09:13 through the Holy Spirit in the inner man 09:15 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith 09:19 that you being rooted and grounded in love 09:22 may be able to comprehend with all the saints, 09:25 what it is, what is the width 09:27 and the length and the depth and the height 09:29 to know the love of Christ 09:31 which passes knowledge 09:32 that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 09:35 Now to Him, Jesus, 09:38 who is able to do exceedingly abundantly 09:40 above all that we ask or think, 09:41 according to the power that works in us, 09:45 to Him be the glory 09:46 in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, 09:49 forever and ever. 09:50 Amen." 09:52 Amen. 09:53 So where is that dynamite power? 09:54 How do we get the dynamite power? 09:56 Where is it? Through the Holy Spirit. 09:58 It's through the Holy Spirit on the inside of us. 10:02 That's what Jesus promised His disciples, didn't He? 10:05 He said, 10:06 "Wait in Jerusalem 10:07 till you receive the power from on high." 10:09 But what is this power? 10:12 What does it do for us? 10:16 One thing that it does, it provides spiritual energy. 10:20 Amen! 10:21 Again, when you read John 16, 10:23 another thing is that you hear a victorious over sin. 10:27 That's the big... I love that. 10:28 Power to be victorious over sin? 10:31 Hallelujah, what else? 10:33 I think it enables the Holy Spirit 10:35 to do His work through us. 10:37 Amen. 10:38 Sometimes, right? 10:39 Sometimes we get in the way, we need that power. 10:42 Amen. That helps us to witness. 10:45 It helps us if, 10:46 if you are blessed to be able to deliver a sermon 10:50 or, I mean, it's just amazing 10:52 how it is to be behind the podium. 10:54 And you started sharing and the Holy Spirit comes in 10:57 and takes over. 10:59 I mean, it's just a high of its own, 11:02 nothing better. 11:04 And I think in order to be filled 11:05 with the Holy Spirit, 11:07 we have to be emptied of self, 11:08 because like we were talking about earlier, 11:10 before the program, Eric and I were talking 11:13 and about how, sometimes we can get in the way, 11:15 if we're so full of ourselves, 11:18 that nothing else is gonna come in, 11:20 you know, Holy Spirit doesn't have any room to move 11:22 and He can't do what He needs to do through us. 11:26 Amen. 11:27 When we have... 11:28 When He says, He gives us the spirit of power. 11:32 When you think about it, 11:33 power to bear up under your trials, 11:37 God will never leave you or forsake you. 11:39 He will carry you through. 11:42 But what does Romans 8:9 say, Eric? 11:45 Romans. 11:47 Romans 8:9, 11:49 "But you are not in the flesh but in the spirit, 11:53 if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. 11:56 Now, if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, 12:00 he is not His." 12:02 So if a Christian, 12:05 someone who calls themselves a Christian 12:09 does not recognize 12:12 how important the Holy Spirit is in their life. 12:15 To me, that's it right there. That's right. 12:17 That if the Holy Spirit is not dwelling in you, 12:23 you're not Christ. That's right. 12:25 So one thing we always do is 12:31 we pray in the morning. 12:33 That's the first thing. 12:34 My eyes open, that's the first thing I'm praying, 12:37 is, Lord, fill me afresh with Holy Spirit. 12:41 Why do you think Jesus told us to ask, to seek, to knock, 12:45 and in the Greek that's asking, keep on asking, 12:48 seeking, keep on seeking, knock and keep on knocking. 12:52 And He says, 12:53 how much more will the heavenly Father 12:55 give the Holy Spirit to those 12:58 who keep asking and seeking and knocking? 13:01 Why do you think it's important daily 13:04 to ask for the Holy Spirit? 13:06 I think we have to remind ourselves daily 13:10 that the Holy Spirit is available to us 13:12 and we have to request that it stays available to us 13:15 and that it works within us, otherwise we forget. 13:19 We begin thinking that 13:20 the things that happened today and yesterday 13:22 and the day before was our great work 13:24 and it wasn't. 13:25 Right. Amen. 13:27 Every day has its own set of challenges 13:29 and only God knows what we're gonna face that day 13:32 and to be filled with His Holy Spirit 13:35 and to ask for that, 13:37 it gives us that that refreshing that we need, 13:39 because we don't know what lies ahead. 13:42 And we need to be ready in season, out of season. 13:45 But, you know, I was thinking about how, 13:47 if we memorize scripture 13:49 and we get that in our minds, in our hearts, 13:52 that it's gonna come back when we need it. 13:55 And the Holy Spirit can do double the work. 13:58 If when His Word is in us, 14:00 it's just like double, double duty. 14:02 He brings to our remembrance. 14:04 So that means we've had been exposed to 14:07 at some point of time. 14:09 You know, what I was thinking about is 14:12 sometimes the best that we can do is rent, 14:16 but there's nothing like having your own place 14:18 which is permanent. 14:20 Amen. 14:21 So I would like to think that daily, 14:22 I come to the Holy Spirit 14:24 and thank you for being in me. 14:26 So now there's a permanence that's in my heart, my mind. 14:30 And as each day goes by 14:32 and you're filled with that love, joy, peace. 14:36 You know, these are His gifts that He puts in us. 14:38 Well, it's who you become. 14:42 And those are those habits that... 14:44 The enemy certainly is out there to seek 14:46 who he can desire or devour. 14:51 Remember that he's got that resume of us, 14:54 so he knows we are weak. 14:55 That's right. 14:56 And so, boy, you know, to me, it's just, 15:00 I have a friend of mine says, 15:03 well, I shouldn't say this, but I am anyway. 15:07 Yeah. 15:10 Well, I'm not going to say it. 15:11 Okay. You're being a good boy. 15:13 I'm gonna be a good boy. Okay. 15:15 I think Matthew 6:33 really touches my mind 15:17 because it says, 15:18 "Seek ye first the kingdom of God 15:19 and His righteousness, 15:21 and all things shall be added unto you." 15:22 So the Holy Spirit will give you wisdom. 15:25 Just a quick story. 15:26 I had a young lady that wanted help shovel her driveway, 15:30 and I really didn't want to do it. 15:31 I didn't feel like I should. 15:33 I just kind of waiver in my thinking, 15:34 you know, so why don't you go there 15:35 and do it? 15:37 And if I had not have done that, 15:38 I would not have seen how God would have blessed her. 15:40 I'm actually on the door 15:41 where she told me her dogs got loose 15:42 and they couldn't find them. 15:44 So I began praying with her. 15:45 As I was praying that's what happened. 15:47 The dog shows up. 15:49 And here I am wavering 15:51 and think, well, maybe I shouldn't do this, 15:52 but the Lord says, no, go do it. 15:53 And in that, He added unto a blessing. 15:56 If I wouldn't have done that, 15:57 I've never been blessed by blessing her. 15:59 It was just incredible. That's right. 16:00 But I think as you were adding to the story, her husband, 16:04 he was out been looking for the dog all this time 16:06 and he couldn't find it. 16:08 And then here, just out of nowhere, 16:10 have the prayer and here's the puppy. 16:13 I mean, they'll never forget that. 16:15 Yeah. It's God. 16:17 I was just gonna say, 16:18 would you agree that we're leaky vessels? 16:21 Yes. 16:22 And we can grieve the Holy Spirit. 16:26 The Bible says we can resist the Holy Spirit. 16:29 Absolutely. Guess what? 16:31 We can even quench the Holy Spirit. 16:33 That's right. 16:35 But I think, Eric, you touched on the most important thing. 16:38 The reason Jesus told us to ask and keep on asking 16:42 is so that we recognize our dependence on God 16:47 and that we do. 16:49 You know, there are times 16:51 I start off, 16:52 I pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit. 16:54 And I'm so aware of God's leading. 16:56 Sometimes I get so busy 16:58 and when I finish, 17:00 I think, Lord, did I let you lead? 17:02 And then I think, yeah, You were leading. 17:04 But I think He wants us to recognize that 17:10 so that we know, 17:11 and we can trust Him and depend on Him. 17:14 And that He... 17:15 That Holy Spirit when He is working in us, 17:18 He will help us 17:20 bear up under persecution, under pain, 17:24 under all circumstances and trials. 17:27 So He's the spirit of power, 17:29 but what do you think He means by the spirit of love? 17:34 How does God fill us with His love? 17:40 Through the aid of the Holy Spirit. 17:41 Well. 17:43 And what scripture tells us that? 17:44 You got that in Romans 5:5. Yep. 17:47 You want to read it? 17:48 Yeah, that's a great scripture, you know. 17:50 I'd like to actually start in verse 3 if I can. 17:53 A lot of people says on verse 3, 17:55 "And not only so, but we glory in tribulations." 17:57 And I think about how many people 17:59 really wanna go through a trial, 18:00 like you're going through a trial 18:01 and you're like, you know, 18:03 I don't wanna go through a trial, 18:04 but I like that word and that is patience, 18:06 work with patience and you study the word. 18:07 I love this in the Greek, 18:08 which I learned it's actually means 18:10 He's working on our character. 18:12 So in his character and experience 18:13 and then of course, experience leads to hope. 18:15 Verse 5 that we're looking at, 18:17 "And hope make it not ashamed 18:18 because the love of God 18:19 is shed abroad in our hearts by," 18:21 I don't know what that says there? 18:22 What's does that say? 18:24 "Oh, the Holy Ghost, 18:25 which is given unto you or given on to us." 18:27 So yeah, it looks like your question, how does, 18:30 He fill us with His love is through the Holy Spirit. 18:32 And, you know, when you think about this, 18:35 I just love this. 18:36 The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:8 and 4:16, 18:40 God is love. 18:41 Well, the Holy Spirit 18:44 then being God is a spirit of love. 18:46 That's right. 18:48 And when He is in our heart, 18:50 somebody asked me, 18:51 how do you know 18:53 if you're filled with the Holy Spirit? 18:54 Well, I think the number one 18:57 evidence, 18:58 it's not gifts and signs and things you can do. 19:02 It's love. Right. 19:04 I think that... 19:06 JD why don't you read Mark 12:29-31? 19:09 What did Jesus say 19:12 is the most important commandments for you and I? 19:17 Well, it starts in verse 29, 19:20 "Jesus answered him, 19:21 'The first of all the commandments is: 19:24 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, 19:25 the Lord is one. 19:27 And you shall love the Lord your God 19:29 with all your heart, with all your soul, 19:32 and with all your mind, and all your strength.'" 19:35 So in other words, totally. 19:37 "This is the first commandment. 19:38 The second is: 19:40 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 19:43 And there is no other commandment 19:44 greater than these.'" 19:46 And, of course, the focal point there is love, 19:48 He's implanting that love in us 19:51 of which means that we care that 19:53 we want to do for others, 19:55 it just comes natural, you know. 19:56 That's right. 19:58 At least the first time, 19:59 it may be a little bit difficult, 20:00 but as you get into it, the dog show up. 20:04 Love is practiced by self-sacrifice. 20:06 That's right. 20:08 Right? That's right. 20:09 Jesus had self-sacrificing love. 20:11 When His love is in us, how... 20:14 Let me ask you, do you feel without the Holy Spirit 20:18 that you could love the Lord, your God, 20:20 with all your heart, 20:22 with all your strength, with all your might? 20:24 No. 20:25 It's possible without Him, isn't it? 20:27 Absolutely. Absolutely. And the Trinity. 20:30 How do you... 20:31 What do you think about, 20:32 could we love our neighbor as ourselves 20:34 without that divine love? 20:35 Absolutely not. 20:37 So, you know, I was, actually one of our family members 20:43 was at a sermon I was doing. 20:45 And when I said I can't do this. 20:48 And she was like, "Oh, how awful to say?" 20:52 And I said, "I can't do it without the Holy Spirit." 20:55 We just can't. Yeah. Yeah. 20:57 I know. 20:59 There's a scripture that says you can have everything. 21:01 You can have all knowledge. 21:03 You can have, it goes through a list of things. 21:05 You can have everything. 21:06 And if you don't have love, you have nothing. 21:08 Right. Amen. 21:09 And I always remember that because I know a lot of people 21:12 who they don't have much, they don't have much money. 21:15 You know, they may not be 21:16 the best-looking person in the world. 21:19 They may not have children. 21:21 They may be in a really tough situation, 21:24 but they're the most loving people in the world. 21:25 And it attracts you to them. 21:27 You know, they're beautiful people. 21:29 So you don't need everything. 21:31 What you need is love. 21:32 And that's the thing we need to remember. 21:33 Amen. 21:35 When you said that it attracts you. 21:36 I was thinking, 21:37 God woos us with His love the way we woo others 21:41 as we reflect that. 21:42 That's right. 21:43 How do we show our love for God? 21:46 By being obedient, by keeping His commandments. 21:51 I always remember, 21:53 I have it pops up on my computer 21:54 every once in a while. 21:55 Auto pop-up, 21:57 obedience is the highest form of worship. 21:58 Amen. 21:59 And so it's not necessarily about bowing down to Him, 22:03 even though that's a good thing. 22:04 But if you bow down to Him and you're not obedient, 22:07 that bowing down means nothing. 22:08 Absolute. 22:10 I think it's a reflection to you like... 22:11 You were gonna say something? No, go ahead. 22:12 I think for me, it's reflecting His love 22:16 and the way that we reflect that is 22:17 in our families and our neighborhoods, 22:21 in our workplaces. 22:22 And to me, that's how we show Him 22:27 love is by reflecting it and what He gives us. 22:29 I think too. 22:31 And you talked about this commandment 22:32 and this one always sticks out to me, 22:33 the second commandment says, 22:35 "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." 22:37 How many people can honestly say 22:38 they love themselves? 22:40 I mean, we all struggle with something else, 22:42 but I mean really in order to give love, 22:45 you have to have love. 22:46 And I mean, you have to have love for others, 22:47 but also for your own self. 22:49 Well, I think too, like with how do we... 22:51 Like, how would you like explain loving ourselves 22:54 the way God loves us versus 22:56 how the world says we should love ourselves. 22:58 There's a difference 23:00 I think in that kind of love to you 23:02 and not being arrogant or prideful 23:05 and that type of love for ourselves, but... 23:09 Not a self-centered love. 23:10 Right, valuing who we are in 23:13 and because of what He did for us 23:16 and who we are in Him 23:17 and not because of, 23:19 you know, I'm just all that, you know, type of thing. 23:22 It's a totally different kind of love. 23:25 I also think when you have the Holy Spirit, 23:27 it's easy to love your family members. 23:30 So when you grew up with your mother, 23:33 it's a lot harder to love the stranger 23:35 that you've never met. 23:36 Person that's not nice to you. 23:38 It seems harder to love your enemy. 23:39 Right. You know? 23:41 So the Holy Spirit gives you the ability 23:42 not only to love your family members, 23:44 but to love the stranger that needs your help, 23:46 to love the enemy that hates you. 23:48 That's where the Holy Spirit really comes into my life. 23:50 It gives me that capacity to go beyond 23:52 the immediate people around me. 23:54 I love a lot of people that may not like me very much, 24:00 but I love them because I know God loves them. 24:02 Amen. 24:03 And the Holy Spirit gives you that, 24:04 in your heart. 24:06 Amen. 24:07 What came to my mind as you were talking, Eric, 24:08 was the story of Joyce Swift 24:10 and that how her children were all killed. 24:15 And then she forgave the son or not, 24:20 well, he was a neighbor, 24:21 a friend, I think it was, 24:23 but just the love that 24:25 she couldn't master up on her own, 24:28 there was no way. 24:29 I mean, how could anybody forgive someone 24:32 that did that to their family? 24:34 And it just made me think of, 24:35 you know, that love and forgiveness 24:37 that He puts in our hearts 24:38 when some tragic things like that happen, 24:41 that we would never be able to do on our own. 24:43 That's right. 24:45 And it could be as simple as caring for your neighbor, 24:47 being there to do something nice for them. 24:51 We got two of the greatest neighbors in the world. 24:53 I mean, they come over, they mow our yard. 24:55 They'll help us. Right? Amen. 24:57 In fact, during this big snowstorm 24:59 that we've just had, 25:00 he's got his tractor 25:02 and front end loader out there, you know, 25:03 and he's just all the neighbors. 25:05 And when he first started and everything, 25:07 didn't have any gloves on, but now he's tough. 25:11 But I mean, still. 25:13 It was wind chills minus 16. Yeah. 25:17 He's out there and clearing all that for us 25:19 and that's special. 25:20 Can I tell a quick story? Oh, absolutely. 25:22 So this morning I came in 25:24 and someone had a broken zipper on their coat. 25:28 And this person was using a paperclip 25:31 hooked through as the zipper. 25:33 And she came to me and she said, 25:35 can you help me fix my zipper? 25:38 So I took the paperclip out and I helped her. 25:40 And we put the right thing back in there 25:41 and got it super working. 25:43 And she thanked me. And I thought, great. 25:46 So then I printed this up right here 25:48 and I needed a paper clip. 25:50 And I start looking around, I need a paperclip. 25:53 And the paperclip was the one I just took out of the zipper 25:55 and I put it in there. 25:57 Praise the Lord. That's His grace. 25:58 So when you help people, God blesses you in return. 26:01 Amen. 26:02 And that was my lesson from that. 26:04 Would you agree with this statement? 26:08 I believe well, yeah. 26:11 I believe 26:13 nothing inspires courage more than love. 26:16 Amen. 26:18 Would you agree with that? Yeah. Absolutely. 26:19 Where do we see examples of that? 26:22 Desmond Doss. 26:24 Desmond Doss is a perfect example. 26:27 He had the capacity to love the soldiers 26:30 that number one, didn't like him. 26:32 Perks persecuted him. Perks persecuted him. 26:35 And if you don't know who Desmond Doss is. 26:37 Tell us who he was, 26:38 'cause some people may not know. 26:39 He was a conscientious objector. 26:43 He didn't want to carry a weapon 26:45 during World War II. 26:46 So they gave him a very difficult time, 26:48 even threatened him to throw, throw him out of the military. 26:52 But he actually volunteered. 26:53 He was a Seventh-day Adventist who became a medic. 26:56 That's right. 26:58 He became a medic because he didn't want to carry a gun. 27:00 And it turned out that 27:02 the platoon that he served with, 27:04 they got the most difficult mission 27:07 during this... 27:09 On this Island. 27:10 And they were losing lots of people 27:12 and Desmond Doss would go out repeatedly 27:14 and bring back the injury. 27:16 Over a hundred men that he brought back. 27:18 Under heavy fire. 27:20 I think for 12 hours straight... 27:21 Yeah. And he did it out of love. 27:24 Most of the men, he didn't even know 27:26 he went out and he brought them back under fire. 27:28 Even those who had given him such a hard time, 27:31 'cause he wouldn't work on the Sabbath and whatever, 27:34 it was beautiful, but, you see that. 27:37 So love of country, love of your spouse. 27:41 Love, I mean... 27:43 When people love something or someone 27:48 and they're in danger, 27:49 boy, love can inspire courage. 27:53 And I think that 27:54 that's why when God gives us 27:56 the spirit of power and of love, 28:00 I think that's what He wants us to be 28:03 is courageous. 28:05 I think He wants us to... 28:08 I remember seeing 28:09 a woman raise a car. 28:15 Because her son was under the wheel 28:18 and she was probably five foot six, 28:21 probably 115 pounds. 28:24 And she picked that car up 28:26 and it was like, you got to be kidding. 28:29 That's right. 28:30 That's funny that you mentioned that 28:32 'cause that's what came to my mind 28:33 when you're talking about courage 28:35 and how I believe that, 28:36 you know, God built that into us to, 28:37 you know, the chemicals in our body. 28:39 And you talk about like what that happened there, 28:40 there's that adrenaline. 28:42 And He gave us that chemical in our bodies 28:44 that would kick in at that moment too. 28:47 It's just amazing how He built our bodies 28:49 to do that kind of stuff. 28:51 Of course, I'm sure there's angels 28:52 that help in some cases too, 28:54 but it's just amazing to think about, 28:57 you know, these little people 28:59 that did these amazing things at that moment 29:02 when there's something, you know, 29:04 either heavy or not just a heavy object, 29:07 but just heavy, you know, a heavy situation in general. 29:11 And you know the things that He put in us 29:14 to be able to cope with stress 29:16 and those hard things like that. 29:18 It's just amazing. 29:19 And you know how the angels minister to us 29:21 through that and the Holy Spirit, 29:23 and He helps us get through those moments. 29:25 And you can look at that person 29:28 and see they're physically not capable 29:30 of doing what just happened. 29:31 Yeah. But God did it. 29:34 That's why I have such a hard time 29:36 understanding why anyone would not love Jesus 29:40 if they knew what He did for them. 29:41 Right. 29:42 'Cause He did it out of love. He went to the cross. 29:44 So how could you not love a God... 29:45 I realized there's lots of religions 29:47 and lots of faith, 29:48 but how could you not love a God 29:50 who came down and suffered and died for you? 29:52 You know, even the scripture, 29:53 why don't we turn there in 1 John Chapter 1 29:57 or excuse me, 1 John Chapter 4 30:00 And, Eric, why don't you go ahead 30:02 and read 17 through 19 30:04 because what you're touching on is the idea 30:08 when the Holy Spirit is in us. 30:10 And as you read in Ephesians 3:16-21, 30:14 we begin to understand 30:17 the height, the width, the length, 30:19 the depth of the love of God for us. 30:23 And the Bible says 30:24 we love Him because He first loved us. 30:28 1 John 4, let's look at verses 17 through 19. 30:33 "Love has been perfected among us in this: 30:37 that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, 30:40 because as He is, so are we in this world. 30:44 There is no fear in love, 30:46 but perfect love casts out fear, 30:49 because fear involves torment. 30:52 But he who fears 30:53 has not been made perfect in love. 30:56 We love Him because He first loved us." 30:59 Hallelu. 31:00 You know, that, isn't that perfect. 31:02 That's a perfect segue into what does he mean by self, 31:07 by a sound mind, 31:09 there is no fear in love 31:13 because perfect love casts out fear. 31:17 So what does Paul mean 31:19 when he says spirit of power of love 31:23 and sound mind? 31:24 What does the scripture mean by sound mind? 31:29 I think that probably being disciplined. 31:32 Yeah. Spiritually disciplined. 31:33 Right. 31:35 Self-control. Absolutely. 31:36 Fruits of the spirit. 31:39 And having the ability to adequate, 31:41 reason something out... 31:42 Absolutely. 31:44 And, you know that, which you feed that's what's... 31:47 That's where your reaction's going to come from. 31:51 I like, what, what's his name? 31:52 Who was it that said that I'm having your lower passions 31:55 and subjecting to your higher powers. 31:58 You're going to have your lower passions 31:59 'cause, you know, the feelings and emotions will take over. 32:01 That's what we see in the world today 32:02 is everybody's, 32:04 you know, these feelings and emotions are taking over, 32:05 but it's really keeping that mind, reasoning mind 32:07 is Romans 12:2 talks about, 32:09 I think we're going to talk about a little bit later. 32:11 Absolutely. 32:12 You know, I just want to point out 32:13 in the Greek the word is, 32:15 so from the source 32:16 and it's, it is to be disciplined. 32:21 It is to have self-control. 32:24 And I think when we are not motivated, 32:30 this is why I needed this scripture the other day 32:32 when I was so unmotivated, 32:34 because I was letting 32:36 the weight of my circumstances get down on me. 32:39 It was like, Lord, I need You to motivate me. 32:45 And He brought this scripture to mind. 32:47 Wow! 32:48 That's why we're having this Bible study. 32:50 But a sound mind, 32:52 our mind can only be in balance, 32:56 be disciplined and self-controlled, 32:59 if we're under the right influence. 33:02 Right. 33:03 As you said the word influence what came to my mind was 33:06 the influence of music, 33:08 influences of friends, of family 33:11 and how all of these things can contribute, yeah, 33:15 and be distractions. 33:17 And can make our minds scattered or not, 33:23 you know, and not in line with the Holy Spirit. 33:26 And to me, you know, 33:29 if I have too many things going on, 33:31 I can't focus. 33:32 And what we're talking about, 33:34 you know, also about being balanced 33:36 and to be able to focus on one thing at a time 33:39 and do it well, 33:41 instead of having 50 things going on at once, 33:46 I believe that, you know... Multitasking. 33:48 Fifty, and it is, I was gonna say that 33:51 because you know, a lot of the times people say, 33:53 "Oh, women can multitask," 33:54 but it'll make you go crazy. 33:56 Just honestly, it'll make you go crazy. 33:58 Oh, what was I doing here? 34:00 And then before, you know what you're doing, 34:01 all these other things 34:03 and like you're talking about discipline. 34:05 I think it helps to be able to stay focused 34:07 and do what you're doing, do it well, 34:10 and get it done 34:11 and then move on to the next thing. 34:12 I mean, there are some things that you could get started 34:14 and then go back, 34:15 you know, but as far as multitasking 34:17 and trying to do all this stuff, 34:20 that our brains are not meant to multitask 34:22 because we're not made to do all of that stuff at once. 34:28 We just, we can't. 34:31 Can I add, I'm gonna let you talk, 34:32 I promise, but let me say one thing. 34:35 We've been through in three months 34:38 the death of seven friends 34:40 and then JD's brother, 34:42 and you all know my very close friend, 34:45 Mollie Sue, 34:46 who is Mollie Sue Steenson was like my sister. 34:50 What I've found about grief, 34:53 and especially the past couple of weeks 34:55 since Franklin died. 34:57 Grief is very disorienting. 34:59 You know, time is warped. 35:02 You know, it's kinda like, 35:05 you mean his funeral was just a week ago. 35:07 You mean what? 35:09 It seems like in some ways 35:10 he's been dead forever 35:12 and others said he's not even gone, 35:14 but what I've found myself doing is 35:19 I would start something. 35:21 JD, I wasn't able, because I couldn't travel, 35:24 JD went and preached his own brother's funeral, 35:28 but I would start a task. 35:30 And then I was doing something else 35:31 and doing, and I wasn't finishing anything. 35:35 So I think what you're saying, 35:40 when we have a lot of distracting influences 35:44 in our lives, 35:46 it's hard to be productive. 35:48 If we're going to have a sound mind, 35:52 we've got to have the Holy Spirit 35:54 because it's actually... 35:56 JD, why don't you read Galatians 5:22? 35:59 The idea of self-discipline is a fruit of the spirit. 36:05 Amen. 36:07 In Galatians 5:22-23, 36:10 "But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, 36:14 longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 36:18 gentleness, self-control." 36:21 There it is. 36:22 Self-control. 36:24 A great little I'll read here. 36:25 And I've got this Remnant Bible, 36:27 Christ Object Lessons. 36:28 This is growing and bearing fruit. 36:30 It says, as you receive the Spirit of Christ, 36:32 we're talking about that, 36:33 the spirit of unselfish love and labor for others, 36:36 you will grow and bring forth fruit. 36:38 The graces of the spirit will ripen in your character. 36:41 Your faith will increase, your convictions deepen, 36:44 your love be made perfect. 36:45 More and more you will reflect the likeness of Christ 36:48 in all that is pure noble and lovely and unselfish love. 36:51 I mean, that's a really powerful thought. 36:53 Why do you think 36:55 the Bible calls it self-control? 36:56 I mean, if the Holy Spirit's working in us to will 37:00 and to do his good pleasure, 37:01 why isn't spirit control? 37:03 Why is it self-control? 37:07 What we were talking about earlier with the sound mind, 37:10 it almost applies in this sense. 37:13 I found that 37:14 the greater the trials that you face, 37:17 the more sound of mind you are in the future, 37:21 because it seems like the trials make you wiser 37:25 and they make you stronger. 37:27 So that when future trials come up, 37:30 you faced it already. 37:31 You've been there. 37:33 And it's all joy, brother, because you've been there. 37:35 So it stabilizes you in many ways. 37:37 One of my hobbies used to be aviation 37:41 and I always admire test pilots 37:42 when they were in so much trouble, 37:44 they were always cool. 37:45 They were always level. 37:47 They never got upset. 37:48 They always figured their way out of a problem. 37:50 Discipline. Discipline. 37:52 And that didn't come naturally for them. 37:54 That came because 37:55 a lot of them were former World War II pilots. 37:58 They'd been through the war. 37:59 They'd been through the trials. 38:01 So suddenly when they're facing this new trial, 38:02 they'd been through it before. 38:04 So they were of sound mind. 38:06 So, yeah. 38:08 Let me read this. 38:09 'Cause I like, and it's segueing out of that 38:12 kind of being a cousin right here. 38:15 Talking about the tree, 38:17 you know, a lot of people call it the Christian tree 38:19 because of the fruit that it produces. 38:21 But in following that, it being cool, okay? 38:25 From the tree, I got this out of the commentary, 38:28 from the tree we may pluck and eat. 38:32 In other words, 38:33 because of the trials that we've gone through, okay? 38:36 We can of the fruit of the spirit, 38:37 love, joy, peace, longsuffering, self-control. 38:40 From this tree, we may pluck and eat 38:42 and we may then guide others to it. 38:46 Amen. Amen. 38:47 So here you got the World War II 38:50 cool guy now teaching the younger guy. 38:52 Grace under pressure. 38:54 Okay, which is, that is our responsibility. 38:55 Exactly right. 38:57 That they may also eat. 38:59 And so what a lesson in life, but it all starts with love, 39:03 joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, kindness. 39:06 Here's my thought. 39:08 Let me read Romans 8:13, 39:11 because you know, it's interesting, 39:14 love joy, peace. 39:16 This is stuff we, we experience internally. 39:21 Patience, kindness, goodness. 39:24 That's something we express 39:26 as a result of the Holy Spirit to others, 39:29 but then faithfulness, gentleness, 39:33 which is meekness or humility. 39:36 And self-control is what we expressed toward him. 39:40 Self-control that always fascinated me, 39:42 but here's, let's unpack that. 39:44 Romans 8:13 says, 39:48 "If you live according to the flesh," 39:50 what's going to happen? 39:51 You'll die. 39:52 But you will die. 39:54 "But if by the spirit 39:59 you put to death the deeds of the body, 40:02 you will live." 40:04 How many people, 40:06 how many parties are operating there? 40:09 It's like one. 40:12 See it's, if by the spirit, 40:18 but the spirit's not gonna force you. 40:19 God's not into control. Right. 40:22 God is not in to control us. 40:26 He made us beings of free will. 40:29 So He says, 40:30 if by the spirit you put to death, 40:34 it is by the power of the Holy Spirit 40:38 working in us 40:39 that we get. 40:41 We have to cooperate with Him. 40:43 It takes the two of us co-laboring together. 40:48 We can't overcome sin on our own, 40:51 and He's not gonna force us into that. 40:54 And let me say this for your good team, 40:56 and that is the reason 40:57 that we invite the Holy Spirit in daily. 41:01 Amen. Amen. 41:03 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, 41:07 these are the sons of God. 41:10 That's a legal term. 41:11 It means you're an heir of God, 41:13 whether you're a male or a female. 41:14 Of course. 41:16 For you did not receive 41:17 the spirit of bondage again to fear, 41:18 but you received the spirit of adoption 41:21 by whom we cry out, Abba, Father. 41:25 And that Abba is a tender, 41:31 intimate name for your Father, 41:34 like papa or daddy. 41:36 The spirit himself bears witness with our spirit 41:39 that we are children of God. 41:41 And if children then heirs, 41:43 heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, 41:47 whoops, if indeed we suffer with Him 41:51 that we may also be glorified together. 41:54 Amen. 41:55 That's the part people don't like to read. 41:57 Yeah. 41:58 Which, I mean, two things I want to do one of these, 42:01 this could be my next favorite paragraph, 42:04 but there's heirs in what you just said, 42:07 and that now we've been adopted by Him. 42:10 So we all wanna belong. 42:13 So now, we're part of His family. 42:15 Amen. 42:16 Now, here again, 42:17 I took this out of the commentary. 42:19 Boy, this is great, talking about all the saints. 42:22 Okay. 42:24 That's special group, 42:25 whoever that is 42:27 and all the saints part of the family. 42:28 That's right. Okay. 42:30 There are certain spiritual transactions 42:32 that take place only in the individual's heart, 42:37 but there are other matters 42:40 that belong to the community of God, 42:43 saints, family. 42:46 And this comprehension 42:48 of the love of Christ is one of them. 42:52 It is the common possession that binds believers together. 42:56 That's good. 42:57 That is real part of that family, 43:00 having a family name, 43:03 sons of God. 43:04 That's right. What would we do without? 43:06 Amen. 43:07 But I'd like to go to you, Donald, 43:11 because you've mentioned Romans 12 before so. 43:14 How do we get to that point? 43:16 I mean, we've surrendered, 43:19 which just simply means to yield. 43:21 We're submitting to God. 43:22 We're asking to be filled 43:24 with a dynamite power of the Holy Spirit, 43:27 with the love of God, and with the sound mind. 43:32 Romans 12 is a beautiful symbol. 43:34 We're talking about... 43:36 Now, I guess we're moving on 43:37 to a term called transformation, right? 43:38 Yeah. 43:40 12:1 says, 43:41 "I beseech you therefore brethren 43:42 by the mercies of God 43:44 that you present your bodies, a living sacrifice, 43:47 holy acceptable unto God, 43:48 which is your reasonable service." 43:51 I think there's other translations, 43:52 which says, it's your act of worship. 43:54 I really liked that. 43:55 Verse 2 says, 43:57 "And be not conformed to this world, 43:59 but be transformed by the renewing of your mind 44:02 that you may prove what is that good 44:04 and acceptable and perfect will of God, the renewing." 44:07 Wow. 44:09 So how is our mind renewed? 44:11 When you focus on Philippians 4:8, 44:12 it makes me think of that. 44:14 Thinking on what sort of things are lovely 44:15 or honest or pure of a good report. 44:18 That's good. 44:19 How about 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we become what we behold. 44:22 That's right. Right. 44:24 What about studying the Word of God? 44:27 We're washed by the water of the Word. 44:30 You know, I love 2 Corinthians 5:17, 44:33 that we're new creatures in Christ Jesus, 44:36 that the old is gone, but, and the new is come, 44:39 but I guarantee you some days I wake up and I think, 44:42 oops, the old is still around. 44:44 Same here. 44:45 You know, but so what we need to do, 44:49 would you agree 44:51 is get in the Word 44:54 and understand all of His promises. 44:56 2 Corinthians 1:20 44:58 are yes and amen in Christ. 45:00 So we need to find out who are we in Christ? 45:06 Our spiritual identity, 45:10 but keep going on verse 3, 45:13 because I want to show something. 45:17 I am so discouraged 45:21 or have such an angst 45:23 by the amount of prejudice that is in the world. 45:26 And I wanna tell you something, 45:29 prejudice is nothing more than pride. 45:31 Right. 45:32 It's thinking you're better than someone else. 45:35 Pride is the spirit of antichrist... 45:37 That's right. 45:38 And a sound mind is not prejudice. 45:41 Read Romans 12:3. 45:44 "For I say, through the grace given unto me, 45:47 to every man that is among you, 45:48 not to think of himself 45:51 more highly than he ought to think, 45:53 but to think soberly, 45:54 according as God hath dealt to every man 45:57 the measure of faith." 45:59 And something came to my mind, 46:00 I was coming up this little skit. 46:01 And I thought about this, 46:03 you know, you're talking about this idea of pride. 46:04 I thought about this young man 46:05 who kind of walks through school. 46:07 You know, he puts on this deodorant stick 46:08 that says pride. 46:10 So, he puts on this pride and people are going... 46:11 It seemed gooey. 46:12 Oh, you know, it was kind of, oh, get away. 46:14 But then of course you put on a stick of humility 46:15 and people are just flocking to you. 46:17 But you know, it's just like, I see this, 46:19 this pride is just repulsive. 46:21 It's like, ugh, get away. You're just, I can't stand it. 46:24 So I mean that you shouldn't think highly 46:26 more than you of yourself than you should. 46:28 I always look at Paul and Paul was very educated. 46:32 He was very prominent. 46:34 But when the Holy Spirit was in him, 46:37 he said, I'm the least. 46:40 And I look at that and I say, that's humility. 46:43 Amen. 46:44 But he went through trials to reach to that point, 46:46 to get to that point. 46:47 You know, when you think what he said in Philippians 2 46:50 about let this mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 46:55 who was obedient even to the point of death. 46:59 Let me tell you something. 47:00 To me, true humility 47:02 is recognizing your absolute total dependence upon God. 47:05 That's right. 47:07 So when you go through a day without praying, 47:11 who are you depending on? 47:13 Are you being humble? 47:15 You know, I mean, that's, that's an eye-opener, isn't it? 47:19 And I love what Paul... 47:20 You know, you can add Romans is one of my favorite books. 47:24 But when we think about 47:28 being self-controlled... 47:31 JD, why don't you read Romans 13, 14, 47:34 because this one gets to me every time. 47:37 If you wanna think about 47:39 being self-controlled, here it is. 47:43 But put on the Lord, Jesus Christ. 47:46 In other words, put on the armor of light, 47:48 -L- I -G - H T of Jesus, 47:50 put on the Lord, Jesus Christ 47:53 and make no provision 47:55 for the flesh to fulfill its lust. 47:58 In other words, 47:59 any unholy physical cravings that you may have. 48:03 Maybe just think of Romans 8:1 for some reason. 48:05 Romans 8:1 says, 48:07 "Therefore there's now no condemnation 48:09 to those who are in Christ Jesus 48:11 walk not according to the flesh, 48:13 but after the spirit." 48:15 And that's what here it's talking about 48:16 no provision for the flesh. 48:17 You know, it's like, 48:19 God wants to fill you with His Spirit 48:20 as you're walking towards Christ Jesus. 48:22 You're making that desire 48:23 to have that relationship with Him. 48:24 What came to my mind 48:26 when you're talking earlier about realizing our dependence 48:28 and our need for God. 48:30 In the recovery world 48:32 that we've been a part of the last, 48:34 probably eight years different aspects of recovery, 48:39 as far as... 48:40 You've been counseling in that world, yes. 48:41 Helping and going through it ourselves. 48:44 And in the 12 steps of life recovery. 48:47 And the first step is realizing 48:49 we're powerless over our problems 48:51 that our lives had become unmanageable. 48:54 And I think we could all relate and understand, 48:57 you know, that that's where it starts. 48:59 And we can't experience recovery of sin. 49:03 And this doesn't apply in recovery. 49:06 This applies in anyone as a Christian, 49:08 you know, we have to come to that point 49:10 where we realize that we're powerless 49:12 over our problems and that we need God. 49:14 And that's when He can begin to heal us 49:17 from the inside out. 49:18 And those other things will eventually go away 49:21 once He heals that inside that's that has brokenness. 49:25 What does step three say? 49:27 He made a decision to turn our wills 49:28 over to the care of God. 49:29 Amen. 49:31 Made your decision. So if you make your decision. 49:33 What do you think He means by make no provisions 49:35 for the flesh? 49:36 He means I'm pretty sure He means that 49:41 flesh is all about self. 49:42 Yep. 49:44 It's about what's in it for me. 49:46 And as we all know, I is in the center of sin, 49:51 and that's the last thing we need to be focusing on. 49:54 So this verse says, do not focus on yourself, 49:57 do not focus on your needs, your wants your desires, 50:01 focus on your neighbor, focus on God. 50:03 But... 50:04 And let's take out a step further, 50:06 'cause that has to be the focus. 50:08 But let's say that I'm addicted to sugar 50:13 and I need to lose some weight or wannna be healthier. 50:16 How would I make no provision for the flesh? 50:19 Don't buy the sugar. Don't go down the aisle. 50:23 Go through your cabinets. 50:24 Take that out. 50:26 If I'm an alcoholic, 50:27 make no provision for the flesh. 50:30 Don't bring the alcohol. 50:31 And don't be hanging around friends... 50:33 Don't be hanging, yeah. 50:34 Because they can get it for you. 50:35 If I'm trying to quit smoking, 50:37 don't be buying a carton of cigarettes, 50:39 you know, make no provision for the flesh. 50:45 I'd tell the story, but I'd like to go on 50:47 'cause we just have a few minutes left. 50:49 How do we receive God's Spirit of power 50:55 and love and sound mind? 50:59 Can I read this one? Absolutely. 51:01 This is my favorite verse in the Bible. 51:03 Praise the Lord. It's good. 51:06 Psalms 51:10, 51:08 "Create in me a clean heart, O God, 51:10 and renew a steadfast spirit within me." 51:13 Amen. Can you read verse 11 too? 51:15 There's a piece in there. 51:17 I don't have verse 11 open yet. 51:19 Go ahead, Donald, while he... 51:21 Cast me not, cast me not away 51:22 from thy presence and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. 51:26 Amen. Amen. 51:28 I love this first because David is... 51:31 I love the song. Yeah. 51:33 Yeah, because David, 51:36 he would think he started off 51:38 well with Goliath 51:40 and he made some major mistakes, 51:42 but through it all, 51:44 he was always saying the song, this verse, this prayer, 51:47 create in me a clean heart, God. 51:49 Well, you know what happens after that down in verse 13... 51:51 That's really powerful. 51:52 Then I will teach transgressors your ways... 51:55 Restore to me the joy of your salvation. 51:57 Yes. 51:58 Sinners shall be converted unto thee. 52:00 So He's preparing us that we can help someone else. 52:04 You know, I just want to say to those 52:06 who are listening to us tonight. 52:08 If you're in that situation 52:10 where you really are feeling sorrow for your sin 52:14 and you wanna to learn how to repent? 52:16 Just go to Psalm 51. 52:19 This is what happened 52:20 after David had had an affair with a married woman, 52:25 Bathsheba, 52:27 sent her husband to the front lines 52:30 so that he would be killed. 52:31 The prophet Nathan comes in and tells him the story 52:34 about the little lamb. 52:36 That's a big lamb 52:37 a shepherd took and slaughtered for his guest. 52:41 And David's saying, "Off with his head." 52:43 And then Nathan says, "You are the man." 52:46 And he goes to God in Psalm 51 and says, 52:50 "Lord, against You and You only have I sinned." 52:53 And then, it's create in me a clean heart. 52:57 Look at 14:14. 52:59 Now that I'm here, I'm reading, 53:00 "Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, 53:03 O God." 53:05 Amen. He was guilty. 53:06 Amen. He was surrendered. 53:08 But this is how he did. 53:10 So we in just the couple of minutes 53:12 that we have left, 53:14 we've already mentioned Luke 11:9, 13 53:17 which in the Greek, let me tell you something, 53:19 Luke 11 Jesus said, 53:20 "Ask, and it will be given to you, 53:22 seek, and you will find, 53:23 knock, and the door will be opened to you. 53:26 But in the Greek, these are linear verbs. 53:28 They are a progressive and continuing action. 53:32 So the better translation 53:34 would be ask and keep on asking, 53:37 seek and keep on seeking, knock and keep on knocking. 53:41 And then when you get down to verse 13, 53:44 He's telling you what you're asking for. 53:47 He says, if you know, being evil 53:51 know how to give good gifts to your children, 53:53 how much more will the heavenly Father 53:55 give the Holy Spirit to those who ask 53:59 and keep on asking? 54:02 It goes directly on to the next one. 54:05 Yeah, go ahead, honey. 54:06 Acts that'd be in Acts 5:32, 54:09 "And we are his witnesses to these things. 54:12 And so also is the Holy Spirit 54:14 whom God has given to those who obey Him." 54:19 If it's a gift, 54:22 why do we have to obey them? 54:24 Janelle, read John 14:15-17. 54:26 We got to connect those. 54:29 If you love Me, keep My commandments. 54:30 Who is speaking? Jesus. 54:33 "If you love Me, keep My commandments, 54:35 and I will pray the Father. 54:37 And He will give you another Helper, 54:39 capital H for Helper, 54:40 that He may abide with you forever. 54:43 The spirit of truth, 54:45 whom the world cannot receive 54:46 because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. 54:49 But you know Him, 54:51 for He dwells with you and will be in you." 54:55 So Jesus saying, 54:56 if you love Me, keep My commandments. 54:59 And then they're conditional. 55:03 If you keep My commandments, 55:05 I'm gonna give you the Holy Spirit. 55:07 So we are led by the Holy Spirit. 55:10 He convicts us. 55:11 He convinces us of our sin. 55:14 And so when we confess our sin, 55:16 1 John 1:9 says we confess our sin. 55:19 That's obedience to confess your sin. 55:21 He is faithful 55:23 and just to forgive you of your sin, 55:24 cleanse you of all unrighteousness. 55:26 And then what you said earlier, Janelle, 55:30 then he gives us the Holy Spirit, 55:32 but we can only receive the Holy Spirit 55:35 to the degree we're emptied of self. 55:37 So sometimes we've got this much of the Holy Spirit. 55:41 Sometimes we got this much. 55:43 Sometimes we are just overflowing 55:47 with the Holy Spirit, 55:49 but let's wrap all of this up. 55:52 And why don't you read this one for us, Eric, 55:56 Ephesians 6:10-13. 55:59 How do we receive the spirit of power, 56:03 and love, and sound mind? 56:06 "Finally, my brethren be strong in the Lord 56:09 and in the power of his might, 56:11 I love this part, 56:13 put on the whole armor of God 56:15 that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, 56:19 for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, 56:22 but against principalities, against powers, 56:24 against rulers of the darkness of this age, 56:27 against spiritual hosts of wickedness 56:29 in heavenly places. 56:31 Therefore, take up the whole armor of God 56:35 that you may be able to withstand in the evil day 56:39 and having done all to stand." 56:42 Amen. 56:43 And let me tell you this. 56:45 If you don't stand firm in faith, 56:48 you're not gonna stand at all. 56:51 So the spirit, let's read, 56:54 JD, why don't you read 2 Timothy 1:7, again for us? 56:58 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, 57:01 but of power and of love and of a sound mind." 57:05 Hallelujah. 57:07 That's a two-hander, isn't it? 57:10 Thank you guys so much for being here 57:12 and we're so grateful, honey. 57:14 I'm glad we were together for this program. 57:17 I feel encouraged. 57:19 We're so grateful for those of you at home. 57:21 Our prayer for you 57:23 is that the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, 57:26 the love of the Father 57:28 and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit 57:30 will be yours today and always. 57:33 Happy Sabbath. |
