00:23 Welcome to
00:24 Timeless Healing Insights. 00:25 I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:27 As always, let's seek 00:28 the Lord in prayer 00:29 before our study. 00:30 Father in heaven, please 00:31 open our minds to Your Word 00:34 that we may see 00:34 wonderful things that change us 00:37 and change the ones around us. 00:38 We ask, in Jesus name, Amen. 00:46 We are 00:47 looking at the fourth conflict. 00:50 The fourth conflict 00:52 that Jesus had. 00:53 Jesus냥sciples 00:55 walking through 00:56 the grain fields 00:57 have been threshing 00:58 and harvesting. 00:59 That's what 00:59 the Pharisees are 01:01 accusing them of, 01:02 the religious leaders. 01:03 And Jesus gives them 01:04 this illustration. 01:05 He says, Wait a minute, 01:06 you're criticizing me. 01:07 Think about what David did 01:09 in the days 01:10 of Ahimelech 01:11 and Abiathar, Abiathar 01:13 specifically mentioned. 01:14 Think about what David did. 01:17 Why is he giving this example? 01:20 I would suggest to you 01:21 that Jesus is saying, 01:22 look, 01:23 you're setting yourself up 01:24 as the arbiters of the law. 01:26 You're thinking 01:27 that you can draw lines 01:28 and say what's acceptable 01:30 and what's not. 01:31 However, 01:32 you can't even judge the law 01:33 rightly yourself. 01:35 I would suggest to you 01:36 the evidence suggests to me 01:38 that these Pharisees, 01:39 these scribes, 01:40 these religious leaders, 01:41 if you read accounts 01:42 of what was going on in 01:43 Jesus냝y, 01:44 they were constantly arguing, 01:46 you know, 01:46 about all these 01:47 nuances of the law. 01:49 And so it is very likely 01:50 that they argued about, well, 01:51 how could David do this? 01:52 I mean, how is it right? 01:54 And it's likely 01:55 that this was 01:55 a contentious point 01:56 in Jesus냝y. 01:58 And he says, 01:58 you don't even know. 02:00 You can say David was okay 02:01 when he did this, but you 02:02 don't even know why. 02:04 And you say, well, why am 02:05 I making a case like that? 02:06 Because like I said, 02:08 read about, 02:10 well, actually, just read 02:12 Mark's gospel. 02:12 I invite you to turn there. 02:14 This is a review text for you. 02:16 Go back to the first chapter 02:18 of the gospel of Mark. 02:20 And I want you to notice 02:21 something interesting. 02:23 As Jesus 02:25 is ministering in Mark 1 02:28 and in Mark 2, something very, 02:33 very interesting is happening. 02:37 Look at Mark 1. 02:39 Jesus, there in verse 02:41 39, is going 02:43 throughout Galilee. 02:44 He's preaching 02:45 in their synagogues. 02:46 He's casting out demons. 02:48 People are flocking to Jesus. 02:50 And as you read 02:51 through these accounts, 02:52 there's an initial reaction 02:54 that people have. 02:55 Jump down to chapter 2 02:56 and I want you to see this. 02:58 This is in 03:00 verse 12 of chapter 2. 03:03 They say, we never saw 03:08 anything like this. 03:11 We never saw anything 03:14 like this. 03:15 And as you read 03:16 through the gospels, 03:17 you'll see that 03:18 people often say 03:19 Jesus is preaching 03:20 with authority, 03:23 not like the religious teachers 03:25 of His day. 03:26 Why? Why? 03:29 Why are they saying that? 03:30 Because the religious teachers 03:31 were always 03:32 debating these issues. 03:34 Are you getting the picture? 03:35 So let's come to verse 03:37 22 in chapter 1 of Mark. 03:38 I just want you to see this, 03:40 okay? 03:41 What was 03:42 so astonishing 03:43 about Jesus럑aching? 03:45 Mark 1:22, 03:46 they were astonished 03:48 His teaching for 03:49 He taught them as what? 03:50 As one having authority 03:52 and not as the scribes. 03:54 So come back to this story now 03:56 at the end of chapter 2. 03:58 And what is Jesus doing 04:00 that's so remarkable? 04:01 He is speaking assertively 04:03 and He's speaking to people 04:04 who were always quibbling 04:05 about all the details. 04:10 If you look historically, 04:12 you'll find that 04:12 the Jews were 04:13 so determined 04:15 not to break the Sabbath 04:18 that in one of their accounts 04:21 they have 04:21 a list of 39 prohibited acts. 04:25 There's other lists, okay? 04:27 They kept drawing lines 04:28 and they would debate over 04:29 which lines should be drawn. 04:32 And now Jesus has crossed 04:33 one of the lines 04:35 that they drew. 04:36 Here's Jesus reply 04:37 after He shares 04:38 that story, basically saying, 04:40 You're not even straight 04:41 on Bible history. 04:42 You're quoting 04:43 the Bible says this, this 04:46 the Sabbath was made for man 04:49 and not man for the Sabbath. 04:53 What is Jesus saying here? 04:54 The Sabbath was made for man 04:57 and not man for the Sabbath. 04:59 Let me illustrate it 05:00 with another medical 05:02 research study. 05:04 This is one of my favorite 05:05 studies on the Sabbath. 05:08 You may have heard me quote 05:09 it before, the Anson's. 05:11 Team of researchers 05:13 in the southern part of Israel 05:15 back in 2001 published a study 05:18 looking at data 05:19 that went all the way back 05:20 to the 1980s. 05:21 Between 1983 and 1992, 05:23 they looked at a full decade 05:25 and they were trying to answer 05:26 a question. 05:27 They said, Look, 05:27 we have all these 05:28 different festivals in Israel. 05:30 You know, 05:31 you've heard of some of them, 05:33 you know, 05:33 whether it's 05:34 the Feast of Lights or Hanukkah 05:36 or whether it's 05:37 Yom Kippur, 05:39 you know, 05:40 whether it's 05:40 the weekly Sabbath. 05:42 I mean, 05:42 so they looked at all these, 05:44 you know, Rosh Hashanah, 05:46 they looked at these 05:47 Jewish festivals. 05:48 They wanted to see 05:50 as epidemiologists. 05:51 Does it matter 05:53 when these 05:53 feasts are occurring? 05:54 Does it impact mortality 05:57 because they're looking 05:58 at daily death rates 06:00 to see if it made 06:01 any difference 06:01 to the time of the year? 06:04 And it was fascinating. 06:05 It was so fascinating to us 06:07 when we wrote the book 30 Days 06:08 to Natural Blood 06:09 Pressure Control. 06:10 We have a whole chapter 06:11 on spiritual health. 06:12 We said we got to put 06:12 this study in there 06:14 because 06:14 because this is dealing 06:15 with stress. 06:16 It's dealing 06:17 with optimal health. 06:18 And so we quoted 06:19 that study there. 06:20 And why what was in it 06:21 that was so powerful? 06:22 Here's what the Ansons found. 06:24 They found that death rates 06:26 dropped significantly 06:28 during the hours 06:29 of the Bible Sabbath, 06:31 from sundown Friday 06:33 to sundown 06:34 Saturday death rates plummeted. 06:38 Now, some of you, if you know 06:41 the history 06:41 of that part of the world, 06:42 you say, well, I mean, come on, 06:44 that's no surprise, 06:45 because back in that timeframe, 06:48 the Sabbath 06:49 from sundown Friday to sundown 06:50 Saturday was a civil holiday 06:53 as well. 06:53 Everyone was not working. 06:55 So you'd expect 06:55 death rates to go down 06:57 working, right? 06:58 They're not 06:59 stressing themselves at work. 07:00 They're relaxing at home. 07:02 So that's 07:02 what you'd expect to find. 07:03 Well, 07:04 the Anson's looked at that. 07:05 Was that the reason? 07:06 Did it have to do with it 07:07 just being a day off? 07:08 And they found 07:08 there was no such benefit 07:10 with other days off 07:11 other religious holidays 07:13 just with the Sabbath. 07:15 Even more remarkably, 07:17 they found 07:18 that when you looked at 07:20 non-Jews living in Israel, 07:23 who also had the day off, 07:25 they had no decrease 07:27 in their death rate. 07:28 It was just for those 07:29 who seem to be 07:31 observing the Sabbath. 07:32 By the way, 07:33 for little children 07:34 who presumably couldn't 07:35 differentiate, you know, from, 07:37 you know, a four year old, 07:38 do they know 07:39 maybe they 07:40 appreciate the Sabbath 07:41 on some level, 07:42 but they didn't 07:43 find any benefit 07:44 in really little 07:44 children either. 07:46 So it seemed that 07:47 there was something 07:48 about the significance 07:49 of the Sabbath 07:50 that was improving 07:51 their health. 07:53 What was it? 07:54 Here's their explanation. 07:56 They put it this way. 07:57 The sacred 07:58 nature of the Sabbath. 08:00 Now, 08:01 I got to tell you, this again 08:02 is a secular research journal. 08:04 This is not a, 08:05 this is 08:05 not like a religious paper, 08:06 okay? 08:07 So they're trying to explain 08:09 why there's this benefit. 08:10 The sacred 08:11 nature of the Sabbath. 08:12 It's being set apart 08:13 from all the mundane work 08:15 days of the week, 08:16 creates a special situation 08:18 in which 08:18 the probability of death 08:20 is reduced. 08:21 We have argued 08:22 that this 08:23 special nature 08:24 derives not from 08:26 what the Sabbath is not - 08:28 a workday - 08:29 but from what it is. 08:31 Now, let's just 08:32 stop right here. 08:33 Look at your Bibles again. 08:35 Mark 2. 08:37 I want you to catch this. 08:38 What the Ansons are saying. 08:40 They're not making 08:41 any profession of Christianity. 08:42 They're not quoting Mark 2. 08:45 But what does 08:46 Jesus say as He's summarizing 08:49 His approach 08:50 to their criticism? 08:52 Look at Mark 2. 08:54 The Sabbath was made for man 08:56 and not man for the Sabbath. 08:59 When you focus on 09:00 what the Sabbath is 09:01 not, a work day, 09:02 what is that focusing on? 09:06 That's focusing on 09:07 putting man 09:08 into the mold 09:08 of the Sabbath, right? 09:10 You know, you can't do this. 09:11 You better not do this. 09:12 It's this hour. You better not. 09:13 You following along with me? 09:15 If you focus on 09:16 what the Sabbath is, 09:18 it was made for man. 09:19 It was made to be a blessing. 09:21 That is a totally 09:22 different perspective. 09:23 Do you see this? 09:25 If it's not clear, 09:25 let me have the 09:26 Ansons continue, 09:27 see if they can help us out. 09:29 If the essence of a holy day 09:32 is that it is differentiated 09:34 from the mundane 09:35 rest of the week, 09:36 then Saturday in Israel 09:38 is a holy day par excellence. 09:41 Indeed, by Jewish tradition, 09:43 the Sabbath 09:45 is the most important festivity 09:48 in the Jewish year. 09:50 Is that not remarkable? 09:53 You know, some people 09:53 say, well, 09:54 why arenឍou 09:54 keeping this holiday? 09:56 Why aren 09:57 㸚u keeping the most important 09:59 festivity of the whole year, 10:02 the weekly Sabbath? 10:03 Isn't that nice? 10:05 Some people say I'm really glad 10:06 when a certain day 10:07 comes in the year. 10:08 I really love that day. 10:10 Well, 10:10 I love certain days 10:11 in the year, too. Okay. 10:14 But think about God. 10:15 He didn't 10:16 just give us a celebration 10:17 for creation and redemption 10:19 once a year. 10:20 How often did he give it to us? 10:22 Once a week. 10:23 This is remarkable. 10:24 Itemarkable. 10:26 So the medical 10:27 research confirms 10:29 the blessing of the Sabbath. 10:31 Even from a 10:31 physical perspective. 10:32 Ithat Jesus is saying. 10:35 Man wasn 10:35 㣘de to fit 10:36 in the mold of the Sabbath, 10:37 39 rules and regulations 10:39 what you can and can't do. 10:40 The Sabbath was made 10:42 for man to be a blessing. 10:44 It is one of those tools 10:46 we have on our journey to post 10:47 traumatic growth. 10:51 Now, don't miss this. 10:52 Because 10:53 we have many friends 10:54 in other faith traditions, 10:57 and they would say, 10:57 But you guys are missing it. 10:59 You know, Jesus freed us. 11:01 He redeemed us. 11:02 We don't have to do anything 11:04 to be saved. 11:05 The Sabbath is not something 11:06 that saves us. 11:07 It's the whole point 11:07 of Jesus argument. 11:08 The Sabbath is a blessing. 11:10 Listen here, 11:11 even in the Old Testament, 11:12 Exodus 31, 11:14 the Lord spake 11:14 unto Moses saying, 11:16 Speak thou also 11:17 unto the children 11:18 of Israel, saying, 11:19 Verily, my Sabbath 11:20 ye shall keep: for 11:21 it is a sign between me 11:24 and you 11:24 throughout your generations; 11:26 that ye may know 11:27 that I am the Lord that doth 11:28 sanctify you. 11:30 God doesn't say, 11:30 Keep the Sabbath 11:31 so you'll be holy. 11:32 It's just the opposite. 11:34 He said, By 11:35 resting on the Sabbath, 11:36 that's 11:37 how you keep the Sabbath. 11:38 You rest. 11:39 I mean, to me it's 11:40 really crazy mentality 11:42 where people would criticize 11:44 someone 11:44 for resting on the Sabbath 11:46 saying they're doing a work. 11:48 I mean, doesn't 11:48 it seem kind of weird? 11:50 I mean, think about it. 11:51 You're resting 11:52 and someone says, 11:52 why are you trying to work 11:53 your way to heaven? 11:54 You say, No, 11:54 I'm resting in Jesus 11:56 鄾lvation. He's save me. 11:58 He's making me holy. 11:59 He's pure. 11:59 He's working in my life. 12:01 I'm praising Him. 12:02 Well, you're 12:02 trying to work 12:03 your way to heaven. 12:03 I mean, 12:04 it just makes 12:04 no sense, does it? 12:06 And so this is what 12:07 Jesus is saying. 12:08 The Sabbath wasn't 12:09 meant to be a burden. 12:10 It wasn't about something 12:11 that you did. 12:13 It was about 12:14 something that 12:14 God does for you. 12:17 But Jesus isn't done. 12:19 Mark 2 doesn't end 12:20 with verse 27. 12:21 There's verse 28. 12:22 And Jesus끼ncluding words 12:26 in this pericope, 12:27 this vignette, 12:28 this short story, 12:30 are these, 12:31 Therefore 12:32 the Son of Man 12:33 is also Lord of the Sabbath. 12:37 Now we can't hasten over this 12:39 because this has keys 12:42 to healing in it. 12:43 If we understand 12:44 just this one phrase. 12:46 You see 12:48 some of our friends 12:49 in other faith traditions 12:50 tell us, Well, wait a minute. 12:51 Wait, wait, wait, wait. 12:54 The Lord's Day, that's Sunday. 12:57 Have you heard this one? 12:59 Lord's Day is Sunday. 13:00 And if you meet with a 13:03 good Bible student 13:04 of another faith, 13:05 another Christian faith, 13:07 they might take you 13:07 to Revelation 1. 13:08 Go ahead 13:09 and turn their to Revelation 1. 13:11 I want you to see this. 13:13 Revelation 1. 13:15 And they might say, Well, 13:17 the Lord's Day, that's 13:18 Sunday 13:20 and we 13:21 prove it to you, they say. 13:23 Go right here 13:24 to Revelation 1:9 and 10. 13:27 Let's just read it. 13:29 I, John, 13:30 both your brother and companion 13:32 in the 13:33 tribulation and kingdom 13:34 and patience of Jesus 13:36 Christ was on the island 13:37 that is called Patmos 13:38 for the Word of God 13:39 and for the testimony 13:40 of Jesus Christ. 13:41 John is exiled, 13:42 hen this barren, 13:44 rocky island 13:45 in the Mediterranean there. 13:47 And 13:49 verse 10 says this, 13:51 I was in the spirit 13:53 on the Lord's day. 13:54 They say, there you have it. 13:56 Jesus, received 13:57 the Book of Revelation 13:58 on what day? 13:59 Sunday, 14:00 they say, the Lord's Day. 14:03 Wait a minute. 14:03 Wait a minute. 14:04 Wait, wait, wait. 14:04 Just hold on. 14:05 Where does it say 14:06 what day of the week it was? 14:08 All it identifies 14:09 it is the Lord's day, right? 14:11 It doesn't say 14:12 the seventh day of the week. 14:13 It doesn't say 14:13 the first day of the week. 14:15 So what is the Lord's day? 14:17 What is the day of the Lord? 14:18 What is the day 14:19 that especially belongs to God? 14:21 Well, I would suggest to you 14:23 that the best explanation 14:25 is found in Mark 2, 14:27 because we just read 14:29 that Jesus said 14:30 the Son of Man is what? 14:32 Lord of the Sabbath. 14:34 I would suggest 14:35 the most straightforward 14:36 reading of Revelation 1:10 14:39 is that John received 14:41 the revelation 14:42 on the Sabbath day. 14:44 That God 14:45 especially identified 14:47 as His day. 14:49 But don't miss this either. 14:54 This phrase, the Son of Man. 14:56 You see it there, 14:57 right in verse 28 of Mark, 14:59 if your Bibles are opened. 15:00 If they're not opened, 15:01 it is there. Trust me. Okay. 15:03 And, you know, 15:04 I don't like to say trust me 15:06 unless, you know, my 15:07 my memory is not 100%, 15:09 no matter how good 15:11 I might think it is 15:11 for something, 15:12 no matter how sure I am 15:14 that it says Son of Man 15:16 in Mark 2:28, 15:18 I am just going to make sure 15:20 that it's right there. 15:21 It's still in my Bible 15:22 that it didn't disappear. 15:23 There it is. 15:24 The Son of Man is also Lord of 15:28 the Sabbath. 15:29 Now I am pausing on this phrase 15:32 Son of Man, 15:33 because we're trying 15:34 to look at things 15:34 that are important for 15:35 you and me 15:36 as we go through 15:37 life's journey. 15:38 What does this mean 15:39 when Jesus identifies himself 15:41 as the Son of Man? 15:42 I've read many commentators 15:44 who say when Jesus says 15:45 Son of Man, 15:46 He's referring to Himself 15:48 as like a child of humanity. 15:49 He's a human being. 15:50 He's showing He's a man 15:52 just like He's also God. 15:53 I would say 15:54 this is actually the opposite 15:56 of what Jesus is illustrating 15:59 in chapter 2 of Mark. 16:01 By the way, 16:01 chapter 2 of Mark 16:02 is the first place 16:03 in Mark's gospel 16:04 where this phrase 16:05 Son of Man appears, 16:06 and it appears in two places. 16:08 It first appears in verse 16:09 ten, Let's look at this. 16:10 I want you to see, 16:12 because neither one 16:13 of these contexts 16:15 where Jesus identifies Himself 16:16 as the Son of Man 16:17 has anything to do with Him 16:18 saying I'm 16:19 an ordinary human being 16:20 or I'm a human being at all. 16:22 The focus is something 16:23 totally different. 16:24 It is on Jesus꾤thority 16:26 as God. 16:27 Listen verse 10, 16:28 But that you may know 16:30 that the Son of Man 16:32 has power on earth 16:33 to forgive sins. 16:35 What is Jesus asserting here? 16:37 He is asserting His divinity 16:39 and His power. 16:40 It's not that He's 16:40 a human being. 16:42 And then look here at 16:42 Mark 2:27 and 28. 16:46 The Sabbath was made for man 16:47 and not man for the Sabbath. 16:49 Therefore 16:49 the Son of Man is also 16:51 Lord of the Sabbath. 16:53 Lord of the Sabbath, 16:54 the Son of Man. 16:55 Is this just saying, you know, 16:56 human being, you know? 16:58 Well, 16:58 the Sabbath was made 16:59 for humans, 17:00 and I'm a human being, 17:01 so I am lord of it. 17:02 No, no. 17:03 Let me tell you why 17:04 that doesn't hold water. 17:06 When Jesus 17:07 is using this phrase, 17:08 the Son of Man, 17:09 He is connecting Himself 17:12 with a greater reality. 17:13 And that reality, 17:14 if you are wondering 17:15 why we looked 17:15 at the Book of Daniel, 17:17 we are going right back 17:18 to the Book of Daniel, 17:20 because Jesus saw His ministry 17:22 very clearly. 17:23 I would suggest to you 17:24 in the context 17:25 of the Book of Daniel. 17:26 Later in His book, 17:28 Mark's Gospel, 17:29 Jesus specifically mentions 17:31 the Book of Daniel. 17:32 We saw earlier when Jesus was 17:34 speaking of His time 17:36 having come. 17:37 Okay? 17:37 The time, the fullness of time, 17:39 the time has come. 17:40 What is He speaking about? 17:42 He's speaking 17:43 in the context of Daniel 9. 17:46 Now, when He calls Himself 17:47 the Son of Man, He's 17:49 putting Himself 17:49 in the context of Daniel 7. 17:51 Listen to the passage. 17:52 Daniel has this vision. 17:55 I was 17:56 watching in the night 17:56 visions, and behold, 17:58 One like the Son of Man, coming 18:02 with the clouds of heaven! 18:03 He came to the Ancient of Days, 18:05 that's God 18:05 the Father, 18:06 and they brought Him near 18:08 before Him. 18:09 Then to Him, Jesus, 18:12 the Son of Man, was given 18:14 dominion and glory 18:15 and a kingdom 18:16 that all peoples, nations, 18:17 and what? 18:18 Languages, should serve Him. 18:20 Have you heard that 18:21 phrase before? 18:23 So just like Darius spoke 18:25 to all the then known world 18:27 when he gave that decree 18:28 elevating Daniel. 18:29 Now we see 18:31 in this vision of heaven 18:33 the same words being used 18:35 with respect to Jesus. 18:38 All peoples, all nations, 18:39 all languages should serve Him. 18:41 His dominion is an 18:42 everlasting dominion 18:43 which shall not pass away. 18:45 And His kingdom, 18:45 the one which will 18:46 shall not be destroyed. 18:48 What are we seeing here? 18:48 Is this talking about someone 18:50 who is just a human being? 18:52 No. 18:52 This is the Divine Son of God. 18:55 And so Jesus, 18:55 when He speaks about Himself 18:57 being Lord of the Sabbath, 19:00 I don't want you to miss this. 19:01 There's a word there 19:02 that we often gloss over, 19:04 and the word is therefore, 19:05 why is the word 19:06 Therefore there? 19:09 Why? 19:10 Why is it there? 19:12 The Sabbath was made for man 19:14 and not man for the Sabbath. 19:16 Therefore, 19:17 the Son of Man 19:17 is also Lord of the Sabbath. 19:21 The focus in verse 27 19:23 is that the Sabbath was made. 19:26 The word 19:26 therefore implies 19:28 that Jesus is saying 19:30 that He 19:31 is the one 19:31 who made the Sabbath. 19:33 Are you seeing that there? 19:35 Therefore, why? 19:36 Why is it that? 19:37 The Sabbath was made for man? 19:38 Therefore, 19:39 the Son of Man is Lord. 19:41 He's the master. 19:41 He's the ruler of the Sabbath. 19:43 Jesus is declaring himself. 19:45 Not only is he 19:45 the Divine Son of God, 19:47 He is the creator. 19:49 I mean, it's amazing. 19:50 So they're attacking Jesus. 19:52 They're trying 19:52 to undermine His ministry. 19:53 And what does Jesus keep doing? 19:55 Every time they attack Him, 19:57 He shares greater truth. 19:59 He sheds light on the Sabbath, 20:01 the true understanding 20:02 of the Sabbath. 20:03 It's a gift from heaven. 20:05 And if you understand 20:07 that Jesus is the Creator, 20:09 what should that do 20:11 when it comes to our health? 20:13 Let me give you an analogy, 20:14 and it comes right here 20:15 from Fort Wayne. 20:16 I know some of you 20:17 have very close ties 20:19 to the GM factory 20:21 that we have right here 20:22 in our city. 20:25 Let me ask you a question. 20:26 Let's say you've got a GM truck 20:28 and you bring it 20:29 to the mechanic. 20:30 The mechanic says, 20:30 you know what? 20:31 This is this problem 20:31 I've never seen before. 20:32 I've looked on the manual. 20:34 You know, 20:34 there's some 20:35 esoteric detail here. 20:36 And and 20:37 I don't know what 20:38 the answer is. 20:39 What is a good mechanic 20:41 going to do if he, 20:41 where is he going to go 20:43 to find answers 20:44 about the creation 20:49 of the GM truck? 20:51 Where's 20:52 he going to find answers? 20:54 Go to GM, right? 20:55 Go to the creators. 20:57 So it's the same for 20:58 you and me. 21:00 I was just talking 21:01 to the Pastor, 21:01 many miles from here, 21:02 telling you 21:03 about a church member 21:05 who's dealing 21:06 with a health crisis. 21:07 And as we were 21:07 talking together, 21:08 the Pastor was saying, 21:09 I've tried to share with him 21:11 Biblical health principles, 21:12 but he doesn't want to 21:13 follow them. 21:14 He's not interested 21:15 in the Bible's 21:16 health principles. 21:17 Wait a minute. 21:18 This is like saying, 21:19 you know, I'm having problems 21:20 with my car. 21:21 It's not running well. 21:22 And, you know, 21:23 I'm trying to use the best, 21:24 you know, purified water 21:26 to mix with my gas. 21:27 And somehow it doesn't 21:28 seem to be helping. Okay. 21:31 No, we can't just use 21:32 use our human reasoning, right? 21:35 We want God to the Creator 21:37 to tell us how to care 21:38 for our bodies. 21:41 I found it interesting 21:43 that there was a Review article 21:45 written a few years ago in 2018 21:48 by a Dr. Darren Morton. 21:50 Some of you know Dr. 21:51 Morton's name. 21:52 He's a Seventh-day Adventist 21:54 researcher in Australia. 21:55 He's associated 21:56 with the CHIP program 21:57 The Complete Health 21:58 Improvement Project. 22:00 Some of you may 22:00 have actually gone 22:01 through a CHIP program. 22:03 And he wrote this article 22:05 in the medical literature 22:06 entitled Combining 22:07 Lifestyle, Medicine 22:09 and Positive Psychology 22:11 to Improve Mental Health 22:12 and Emotional Well-Being. 22:14 And what he basically did 22:15 as I looked at that article, 22:16 it seemed like he was looking 22:18 at modern science and saying, 22:19 what kind of things 22:20 are in the Bible 22:21 that actually God 22:23 our Creator has shed light on. 22:25 And included in 22:27 that list of things 22:28 was the research 22:29 from the Ansons 22:29 that we looked at earlier. 22:30 He talks about the Sabbath 22:32 and the blessing 22:33 of the Sabbath, 22:33 but he talked about all kinds 22:34 of other positive health 22:37 practices. 22:39 One easy way to 22:40 remember just one 22:42 perspective on 22:43 that is a phrase called 22:46 New Start. 22:47 Some of you may know 22:48 Weimar Institute. 22:49 I know some of you have close 22:51 ties there. 22:52 I myself was on staff 22:53 there for a period of time. 22:54 That NEW START is an acronym. 22:57 It actually grew out of Ellen 22:58 White's book, 22:59 The Ministry of Healing 23:01 back in 1905. 23:03 First talked about these eight 23:04 natural remedies. 23:06 And Weimar has popularized it 23:08 with this mnemonic NEW START. 23:10 Nutrition, exercise, 23:12 water, sunshine, 23:14 temperance, air, rest 23:17 and trust in Divine power. 23:18 Eight simple remedies. 23:19 You find them 23:20 in the first two chapters 23:20 of the Bible. 23:21 It's our Creator's plan. 23:24 Elements that you can use 23:27 to improve your health. 23:28 We could spend a whole series 23:29 on these elements, 23:30 and I know we've talked 23:30 about many of them 23:31 in other contexts here. 23:33 But we need to finish 23:35 with a final controversy, okay? 23:37 Because the 23:37 Sabbath controversies 23:38 don't end with that last 23:39 when the final controversy 23:41 brings us into chapter 3. 23:43 And Jesus has entered 23:44 now a synagogue. 23:45 There's a man there 23:46 with a withered hand. 23:47 They're watching Jesus closely, 23:49 the account says, 23:50 to see whether He would heal 23:52 this man on the Sabbath. Why? 23:54 So that they might accuse Him. 23:56 Instead of being concerned 23:57 with worshiping on the Sabbath, 23:59 they are trying to 24:01 undermine Jesus듌nistry. 24:04 It's very interesting 24:05 how this story plays out. 24:07 Jesus sees 24:08 this man with the withered hand 24:09 and He tells him 24:10 to step forward. 24:12 Now, some would say, well, 24:13 Jesus could have done this. 24:14 Just had him 24:15 step out 24:16 of the synagogue and done this. 24:18 Why is he doing it in public? 24:19 I would suggest to you 24:20 Jesus is indicating 24:22 that you are, 24:23 it's fine, 24:24 it is good to come 24:25 with your sins, 24:26 with your weaknesses 24:27 into the church. Okay. 24:30 He's here. 24:30 He's offering healing. 24:31 The church is a place 24:32 for healing. 24:33 The people that He criticizes 24:35 is not the ones 24:36 who are coming for healing. 24:37 It's the one who thinks 24:38 they've come to church 24:39 to find fault, okay? 24:40 So that's the difference. 24:42 Jesus asked them this question. 24:43 Is it 24:44 lawful on the Sabbath 24:45 to do good or to do evil 24:47 to save life or to kill? 24:48 And they keep totally silent. 24:51 And it's interesting. 24:52 Mark's account, 24:53 Mark's account 24:55 says that as Jesus 24:56 looks around at them. 24:58 He looks with anger. 25:00 He is grieved 25:01 by the hardness 25:02 of their hearts. 25:04 And He finally says 25:05 to that man, 25:06 Stretch out your hand. 25:08 Now, I can imagine that man, 25:09 you know, 25:10 if you have a deformity, 25:12 it's not something 25:13 you want to make public. 25:14 And now you're in the church 25:15 is asking you to stretch out 25:16 your hand. 25:17 His initial impulse 25:18 might have been, well, 25:19 you know, you know, 25:20 I keep it under my, you know, 25:21 kind of my coat and everything. 25:23 But when Jesus spoke, 25:25 what did he do? 25:26 He obeyed 25:27 and he reaches out his hand 25:29 and it says 25:30 his hand is restored whole 25:32 as the other. 25:33 Then the Pharisees went out 25:35 and immediately plotted 25:37 with the Herodians. 25:39 enemies politically. 25:41 Now they're joining together. 25:42 They're banding together 25:44 to do what? 25:45 To destroy Jesus. 25:48 By the way, what day is this? 25:50 It's the Sabbath. 25:52 And they're 25:53 planning to kill Jesus. 25:55 Do you catch the contrast? 25:57 Jesus, 25:58 through all these conflicts, 25:59 is showing His power to heal. 26:02 He's showing his power 26:03 to minister. 26:04 He's showing the keys to post 26:06 traumatic growth. 26:07 He's showing 26:08 that He's the Creator. 26:09 And we can trust Him 26:11 with the happiest 26:12 and the best way to live. 26:13 I am thankful 26:15 that Jesus didn't 26:16 give up 26:16 in the face of controversy. 26:17 I want to encourage you 26:19 to catch a vision 26:20 from Jesus녣ample, 26:21 whatever you're going 26:22 through today, 26:23 Jesus is there to meet you, 26:25 to help you, to forgive you, 26:27 to strengthen you, 26:28 and to give you 26:30 post-traumatic growth 26:31 encouragement 26:32 through the Sabbath 26:34 and through the other things 26:35 that He's provided. 26:36 May God bless you to that end. 26:43 Healing power 26:45 is in the 26:45 Lord's Word 26:46 and in the things 26:46 the Lord has appointed for us. 26:49 Let's pray with that in mind. 26:51 Father in Heaven, 26:52 thank you so much for 26:53 healing insights 26:54 that you've provided 26:55 in your Word 26:56 and in the Gospel of Mark. 26:58 As we continue on this series, 27:00 as we continue in our lives 27:01 to press close to You, 27:03 may we be transformed 27:06 into the image of Jesus. 27:07 We ask in His name. 27:09 Amen. 27:13 Timeless Healing 27:14 Insights is here for you 27:16 and for your whole person 27:17 health. 27:17 With that in mind, 27:18 we invite you to go 27:19 to our website, 27:20 www.TimelessHealingInsights.org. 27:25 There you will find a 27:27 free 30-day lifestyle program. 27:29 Sign up for it 27:30 and you'll get daily 27:32 email reminders for 30 days. 27:34 Links to short videos 27:36 to give you pointers 27:37 on a healthier lifestyle. 27:39 On our website 27:40 you can also find information 27:43 about this broadcast. 27:44 You can connect 27:45 with our handouts. 27:46 You can review archives 27:47 from episodes of Timeless 27:49 Healing Insights TV 27:51 that you have missed. 27:53 Continued success to you. 27:54 I'll see you at 27:55 TimelessHealingInsights.org. |
