This iconic and graceful 05:43 building shaped like shells of billowing sails is lit up in the 05:49 most beautiful way. This Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue 05:54 performing arts center. It's situated on Bennelong Point in 05:58 Sydney habor close to the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Next door is 06:03 Sydney's central business district and also the Royal 06:06 Botanic Gardens. This building was designed by Danish architect 06:13 Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design 06:15 competition. The New South Wales government led by Premier Cahill 06:20 authorized work to begin way back in 1958. Utzon directed the 06:26 construction. But then things got complicated. This classic structure 06:47 isn't just an opera house. It comprises multiple performance 06:52 venues. In fact, this is now one of the busiest performing arts 06:56 centers in the world, 1500 performances each year, 1.2 07:02 million people attending. In fact, the city opera house was 07:07 identified as one of the 20th century's most distinctive 07:12 buildings. In 2007, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site. During Vivid Sydney people from around 14:42 the world come here to stare at this dazzing array of lights. 14:47 Architecture becomes a form of art. People focus intently. 14:53 these colorful Vivid Sydney lights have a huge impact and 14:58 seem to transform the city. They transform it from being 15:03 just dark and drab into something of great beauty. The 15:08 light brings the city to life. But there's another Light, an 15:15 even greater light that brings change, that brings life, a 15:19 light that literally transforms people's lives. A light that can 15:23 turn dark and drab lives into something of great beauty, the 15:29 Light of the World, Jesus Christ Throughout the scriptures, Jesus 15:36 is compared to light. He is the ultimate source of light and 15:39 life. He brings true happiness in this life and helps us find 15:44 true joy and hope. He literally lights up our lives. Here's what 15:50 Jesus said in John chapter 8 and verse 12: 16:09 Just like Vivid Sydney lights up the city and turns it into 16:13 something of beauty, so Jesus can light up our lives and 16:19 transform us into something of great beauty and value. And in a 16:23 sense, it all begins by this: Looking. Our lives can change 16:28 our lives can be transformed when we simply focus on Jesus Christ 16:33 the Light of the World. We look at all kinds of things in this 16:37 life of course. The media throws out images that grab our 16:42 attention. But what matters is what we concentrate on, what 16:46 we value. Here's what Jesus Him- self said in Matthew chapter 6 16:51 verses 21 to 23: 17:13 In a sense faith is simply about what our eyes are looking at and 17:17 taking in and that makes a big difference. And do you want to 17:22 something clear that you can look at? The gospels in the 17:26 Bible; the light of Jesus laid out because really taking in 17:32 that life creates faith, a faith perspective that transforms that 17:39 brings light, hope and happiness. 17:56 Yes, there's all kinds of darkness in this world. You have 18:00 troubles, right? You have obstacles and there may be times 18:05 when you just can't seem to overcome the darkness. But 18:09 there's Someone who definitely can. Please notice what Jesus 18:14 said in John chapter 12 and verse 45: 18:27 There you have it. We may feel that we're in a dark place in 18:32 our lives. We may feel we're in a hopeless situation. But when 18:38 we begin to focus on the Light of the world a transformation 18:43 begins. Suddenly putting our eyes on the Light that shines in 18:47 darkness we begin experiencing life to the full. We find 18:52 happiness and peace. During Vivid Sydney two-and-a-half 18:57 million people come here to experience and look at these 19:02 spectacular and dazzling lights. They focus intently on these 19:06 lights that transform this city. Well focusing on the Light of 19:11 the world can have an even greater impact. Placing you eyes 19:16 and your faith in the life of Jesus Christ takes people to an 19:20 even higher life than they can ever imagine. So, yes, 19:25 transformation starts with this one thing, what we focus on. And 19:31 then there's the next step. You find it here in the Bible book 19:34 of I John chapter 1 and verse 7: 19:50 After you see the Light, you walk in the Light. That is, you 19:56 respond to this remarkable Life of Jesus Christ. You're not just 20:01 passive, you're not just sitting on a sofa reading a gospel, 20:06 reading the good news about Jesus in the Bible, nodding and 20:09 then putting it away. No, you take it with you. In those 20:16 gospels, there are going to be commands that strike you. There 20:20 are going to be exortations that lift you up. Well make 20:24 those a goal. Pray that you'll be able to express those truths 20:28 in some way. You notice something like that here in 20:32 Vivid Sydney. People walk around to really take in these dazzling 20:37 scenes. They move closer. They absorb. What's more they're 20:43 almost always interacting with friends, talking about what 20:47 they're taking in. Yes, these visitors are compelled in a way 20:52 to express how these flashing lights strike them and that's 20:58 how the Light of the world transforms us. The second step 21:03 is about expressing it in some way. We all have different 21:06 gifts. We all have different ways we can expresss the good 21:11 life that Christ lays down. But the point is to respond, to walk 21:18 to move forward with the principle that Christ's Spirit 21:21 convicts you about. Here's what the apostle Paul says in 21:24 Ephesians chapter 5 verses 8 and 9: 21:42 The sun's rays create an incredible variety of fruit. 21:46 There are blueberries in the bushes, apples, nectarines and 21:51 mangos in the trees. Opening ourselves to God's Light can 21:56 bear abundant fruits as well. God creates with Light. God can 22:02 use every act to work good out of evil, redemption out of 22:07 calamity. He's a Rembrandt coloring the world. Flowers are 22:12 poking up through the mud. Rainbows are flashing across 22:18 gray skies. That Light of the world, Jesus Christ, can have 22:22 such an impact on each one of us. Even the most hopeless lives 22:27 can be propelled so high up. We can be optimistic. We can look 22:33 forward to a new beginning. Here's how the apostle Paul puts 22:37 it in Romans chapter 13 and verse 12: 22:51 That Light of the world can become armor. That means it can 22:58 become what strengthens us and protects us no matter what has 23:03 pushed us down before. I invite you to consider this. The city 23:08 of Sydney takes on such a dramatic new life with those 23:12 colorful flashes. It becomes Vivid Sydney. People experience 23:18 the metropolis in an entirely new way. And a genuinely new 23:24 Light, a real transformation comes with Jesus Christ, the 23:30 Light of the world. The impact is there. We must simply focus 23:35 our eyes, place our faith, absorb that Light and then walk 23:39 with it. Express it in some way. Your life will be so much 23:45 brighter, so much more colorful when you absorb this gracioius 23:49 Savior and Friend. Why not decide to invite him into your 23:53 life right now as we pray. 23:59 Dear Father, what a privilege it is to really focus on this 24:03 Light of the world in the gospels. Help us to really see 24:07 this Man. Really take in who He is. 24:10 Build up our faith and enable us to move forward 24:14 to express that light through the gift that You will give us. 24:19 in Jesus name we pray.
